The four finished builds of the Morensong neighborhood in Tomarang I have been working on! A recreation center (top left), a 4x residential rental (top right), a karaoke bar (bottom left), and a restaurant (bottom right), are all meant to mimic shells in the area.

Fencing contest in the Hansborough Recreation Center, Harlem, January 6, 1940. It was part of a full day of athletic competition at the center that also included gymnastics, boxing, basketball, and swimming races. The festivities were launched by a marching band.

The recreation center, originally known as the 134th Street Natatorium, opened in 1925, and is notable for its decorative architecture. The facility was named in honor of John Rozier Hansborough Jr. (1907-1981), a former Parks recreational employee from 1929 to 1975, and Harlem community leader. Hansborough also broke the color barrier as one of the first two African-Americans in the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials. In 1988, his widow, Audrey S. Hansborough, founded a conservancy in his memory that helps support the maintenance and management of Harlem's parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers.

Congratulations to the 2023 AIA Houston Design Award Winner in the Greater Than > 50K SF Category: Texas A&M University – Southside Recreation Center.

The flagship campus of Texas A&M boasts one of the largest student bodies in the country, with more than 66,800 students. To ensure fitness and wellness is easily accessible to all of its students, the university selected SmithGroup to design a new satellite recreation facility for the Southside area of the College Station campus.

The 63,000-square-foot building blends elegantly with the site and the campus vernacular. An existing row of live oaks was protected to frame the grand entry plaza. A large overhang on the south and west facades further protects the glazing and provides shaded exterior space. As a result, occupants enjoy abundant natural light and pleasing views.

Inside, the design is smart in its simplicity. A central spine with the lobby and support services anchors two high-bay fitness areas. The south bay is devoted to strength and conditioning. A slam wall and functional floor workout area occupy one end, where full-height windows afford pleasing daylight and views of the adjacent university golf course. The south bay also provides access to a large covered outdoor workout terrace.

The other high bay on the building’s north side is used for two multi-purpose sports courts. Adjacent outdoor space features two volleyball courts and another exterior activity zone. The building’s central spine includes a mezzanine with cardio equipment and an exercise studio, a bouldering wall, locker rooms and support services. An awesome opportunity that I had to work on the new logo and branding for the Bradfield Community Center in Lima, Ohio!

Since the late 1930s, The Bradfield has served as a hub for all members of the Lima community seeking fitness, fun, educational, and social programs to enrich their lives!

And since it's #blackhistorymonth here's a little info on the founder Joseph Cyrus Bradfield, M.D.! He was a prominent African-American physician situated in Lima, Ohio, well known for his civic commitment to the Lima community. The Bradfield Community Center in Lima was named after him for all his efforts towards the African American community. He was also a member of the NAACP and served in World War I (as a part of the Medical Reserve Corps) in the 92nd Division, working primarily in the 365th Field Hospital.

It was an absolute pleasure to work with a strong and committed community that now has branding to support their vision and goals!

Granite Falls Rec Center

There's literally nothing to do in Granite Falls so I made a rec center. Both kids and adults will find something to enjoy here. There's a cafeteria, board games, kids area, a small gym and a puppet theatre. Outside there's a small playground and a sauna. You can also find some wild rabbits roaming around.
