Canadian Cartoons Are Great
Tumblr media
Today, the popular cartoon YouTuber Saberspark uploaded a video talking about the infamous “fart episode” of the 2023 Total Drama series. The comments were filled with hatred and generalizations towards Canadian animation. These terrible comments are not the fault of Saberspark, but it is true that the “big users” in the cartoon community are (mostly) Americans who spread myths and stereotypes about Canadian cartoons. This has bothered me and a few others for quite a while, so here, I’m going to prove why Canadian animation is great, actually, and dispel common misconceptions
All Canadian cartoons are about fart jokes - if you say stuff like this, you clearly have never seen a Canadian cartoon outside of Total Drama and Johnny Test. That’s like if I said “all anime is naughty tentacles” or “all American cartoons are about anvils falling on your head.” And don’t act like your precious USA cartoons and anime are exempt from toilet humor. One example of an anime with toilet humor is Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - their first episode was about a monster made out of shit. And we all know about the gross out cartoons such as Ren and Stimpy.
Canadian cartoons are cheaply mass-produced because of CanCon - No. What CanCon ACTUALLY states is that a certain percentage of content on a Canadian channel has to be Canadian-made. The policy is about supporting Canadian art, not “mass-producing” cartoons, since this applies to ALL Canadian TV and radio content, animated or otherwise.
Now, let me tell you some reasons why Canadian animation is actually great
Some of your childhood shows, such as Arthur, Franklin, and Little Bear are Canadian in origin.
Some of the most acclaimed cartoons within the cartoon community, such as Ed Edd n Eddy and MLP:FIM, were both animated in Canada and had voice actors from there (same talent pool, in fact - Vancouver)
Inspector Gadget and the Beetlejuice animated series helped keep good animation afloat during the 80s. In a decade full of uninspired and insipid cartoons, these were two of the highlights.
Canada is still a great place to outsource animation, as proven with the works of Nelvana, Mercury Filmworks, Jam Filled, and countless others.
If you grew up without cable, you probably watched PBS Kids and/or Qubo a lot. Guess what - lots of the shows on both of those channels were Canadian. For example: the PBS Kids Bookworm Bunch: Timothy Goes to School, Seven Little Monsters, Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse - these shows are all Canadian! Qubo was also home to Jane and the Dragon, Jacob Two Two, Babar, Spliced, etc - they’re all Canadian too.
Because Canada’s censors are far more lax compared to American ones, Canada has made huge strides in teen and adult animation. Such shows include Total Drama, 6teen, Detentionaire, Undergrads, Producing Parker, etc as well as the movie Heavy Metal.
Also because of the lax censors, Canadian cartoons had positive LGBTQ representation far before the United States did. One episode of 6teen has a character stating “I’m gay,” and in Braceface, the main character assists her gay friend in finding a boyfriend. Unsurprisingly, these episodes never aired in the US.
6teen also dealt with periods before Turning Red, Baymax, and Molly McGee did it (again, the episode was banned in the US).
Finally, here are a few Canadian cartoons I recommend, and where to watch them:
Cybersix (it was a Canadian and Japanese co-production). The whole thing is on TMS’ YouTube channel.
Redwall is on Pluto, and there are episodes of it on YouTube courtesy of Treehouse Direct
Toad Patrol (unfortunately you’re gonna have to resort to low quality YouTube uploads)
Silverwing - again, the complete series is on YouTube
Detentionaire- On Tubi and Pluto!
Ruby Gloom is a great show if you like cute gothic stuff; it too is on Tubi and Pluto
The Adventures of Sam and Max: Freelance Police - on Tubi
One of my favorites, The Raccoons. Basically the Canadian equivalent to The Simpsons, and with a banger ending song. The show’s production company has uploaded episodes of it for free on YouTube.
The original Clone High was animated by the legendary Nelvana (if you’re wondering, the new season is not outsourced to Canada 😔) It is on Paramount Plus and HBO Max
Undergrads - yet again on YouTube, in low quality unfortunately. Like Clone High, it was on MTV.
I also recommend watching some short films from the National Film Board of Canada. My personal favorite is the Log Driver’s Waltz.
Tl;dr - American cartoons are not bad because of Allen Gregory, anime is not bad because of Pupa, and Canadian cartoons are not bad because of Johnny Test or fart jokes.

Project Spotlight #3: Eart(h) FM
The year is 2072, and we're talking about the solarpunk sci-fi pilot Eart FM with team member Ari!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your teammates!
Hi, I’m Clover! I’m a writer, voice actor, and audio engineer. I’m helping edit Eart FM, and potentially voice act in it. I’m working on a few podcasts, but none of them have released yet. My first and favorite podcast is Wolf 359. I technically have a tumblr account, but I don’t use it, so you can find me lurking on various podcast discords, mainly the official WOE.BEGONE discord.
@lotsadeer: My name is Izze Sykes, I'm an illustrator, writer, podcaster, game designer, voice actor, and wearer of many hats. I'll be doing the cover art for this podcast! The first podcast I ever listened to was Welcome to Night Vale, don't ask me my favourite podcast that's like asking me to choose children, and I'm involved in a few podcasts at the moment! Hope's Hearth, an actual play podcast; Abbey Archives, a Redwall reread podcast; SCP Research Archives, an SCP article podcast; Colchis, a sci-fi audio drama; and Cauterized, a horror audio drama. Plus a few podcasts that are in the works. I like podcasts.
@aclickbaittitle: Hello, I am Ari! I like to say I am a storyteller. I am the organizer (?) for Eart FM and I also plan to sound-design and write.  Like a lot of people I got into audio drama through Welcome to Nightvale and then it was history. My most recent project is a little short-fiction podcast called “Broken Hearted: The Friendship monologues”.
Hello, I'm Laurel. I'm a writer, digital artists, and self proclaimed voice actor. I will be voicing the role of "The Host" in Eart(h) FM! I have not participated in any projects publicly but I have be doing voice work for fun with friends and a bit on my joint youtube channel. My favorite podcast is definitely Penumbra Podcast, my younger brother showed it to me and I was hooked instantly. I don't use my tumblr anymore but you can find me on discord @ cyanosiis!
@timberfins/@elijahharpermusic: I'm Eli, or Timber, and I'm providing music! The first podcast I remember falling in love with was Welcome To Night Vale, but my current favourite is probably Within The Wires (unless we're also including non-fiction, where it's competing with Lingthusiasm). I sing with the Anguilliform Chorus in Eeler's Choice, and you'll also hear me in two Law of Names productions: Season 4 of Breathing Space and the upcoming Waterlogged.
Hey guys, my name is Johnny Fuent, I am a MBA student trying to survive in this trying world. I am a huge nerd, and love to travel. I have been to over 14 different countries and plan to expand that number. I also host my own podcast as well. My first podcast that I listened to was Campfire Radio Theater, and my favorite podcast is Midnight burger. Currently I am a writer for the podjam and happy to be here.
What's your podcast about?
Solar-punk sci-fi with anti space-colonialism sentiments. It is the year 2072, the poles have melted and humanity has taken for the stars, except for the HOST, . To cope with being the only human on earth, they’ve decided to create a Radio Show where they broadcast music from various times and places of the world. One day someone finally calls to the radio station an ECOLOGIST, living on the skirt of the iztaccihuatl bearing news that the earth is healing. Together they embark on a quest for other humans that still live on planet earth, finding various communities and people, and begin to help the earth one day heal.
What are you most excited about in this event?
To collaborate with other creators in order to tell a story that is very dear to my heart.
Any advice for other participants, or those on the fence about joining?
Consult it with the pillow, but if come morning you discover that is just the nerves and impostor syndrome keeping you from participating, take that leap. At the end of the day, we are all just a bunch of people trying to tell stories the same as you.
This team is still looking for new members, adding: "We are currently looking for the ecologist voice actor. We are specifically looking for a chicane / mexican-american voice actor since we are writing the ecologist with an experience specific to said identity (don’t worry, you don’t need to know spanish or anything, as long as you have a connection with the ethnicity or identity, you are welcome to join!)"
If you're interested in joining their project, you can find their casting call here, or you can reach out in the Podcast Book Club Discord server. If you want to know more about the jam first, be sure to check out this post as well!

Hey, Redwall fans and Voice Actors,
I'm working on re-booting my old (I mean OLD) project, the Triss radio play from 2013, now that I have professional equipment and software. If anyone is interested in auditioning, here's the casting call for the first episode, which details Triss, Shogg, and Welfo's escape from Riftgard
If you don't get cast, please stick around anyway, as I need ensemble members to fill in the roles of Redwallers, Ratguards, Guosim, Dibbuns, and Freebooters.
I look forward to hearing any and all auditions. If you're not comfortable submitting on Casting Call Club, feel free to DM me and I can give you my email to submit instead.
Much love!

Went to a new con in town this weekend! Was fun but also oh mannnnnn There were soooo many ppl not dressed up and i swear half the ones that were were either genshit or habin hotel hhsdfghds If I didn't need to get photos done for the Ghost Trick Zine I probably would've worn smth a lil comfier/toned down today but alas alas
costume contest was so weird too, you got like a token at the start of the day and you were supposed to give it to your favourite costumeer, and whoever had the msot tokens at the end of the day won, so it's essentially a popularity/halloween contest which would've been FINE but event organizers were SOOOO weird/self righteous about it like said to the effect of "WE don't let a JUDGE decide who's costume is GOOD or BAD we let the COMMUNITY decide as it SHOULD BE "(i think specfic wording was "a judge who thinks they know everything"??? as opposed to amateurs who've seen you for 5 seconds and not up close) like asdshds tell me you literally do not understand the point of a craftsmanship competition without telling me you don't understand the point of a craftsmanship competition(which also are like waaaaay more generous bc this one had exactly one winner while most craftsmanships have 1st 2nd and third in all of the categories, and then usually a favourite per judge like dshfgdh no most events are usually really supportive you're probably just bitter that you're favourite didn't win one time lmao)
but the voice actor guest was cool he was a pretty big role in the Redwall cartoon and I got him to sign my DVD ehehehe

The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology announced for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, and PC
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Publisher Forthright Entertainment and developer Soma Games have announced The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). It will launch on December 1.
The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology includes the complete story of The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout as told across three acts.
Here is an overview of the game, via Forthright Entertainment:
About
Step into the epic, story-rich world of Mossflower in the first official Redwall story since 2011. The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology is a linear action–adventure game told in three acts. Play as Liam or Sophia, the newest member of the Lilygrove Scout Corps, as the young mice find themselves on the journey of a lifetime to save their home from ruthless pirates. Will they reach Redwall and save their friends before all is lost?
Story
Act 1 – After months of training, betrothed mice Liam and Sophia are ready to graduate into fully-fledged Scouts: a group of woodland rangers tasked with the protection of the land and trained in the ancient ways of woodcraft. Their initiate ceremonies are cut short when sea rats attack their beloved home. As the senior Scouts rally for battle, it’s up to the Scout Corps’ newest recruit to outwit the enemy, light the beacon, and summon aid from the surrounding woodlands – before there is nothing left to save.
Act 2 – The beacon is lit, troops rally to fend off the invading searats, and Liam reunites with his dear Sophia beneath the Lilygrove Lighthouse, but not all is well. Scumsnout’s vengeful cries can be heard in the distance and it is revealed that our Scout’s betrothed has been poisoned by the wereat’s venomous bite. With no time to spare, the couple race to the Winsome Wraith, where a mysterious and dangerous stoat may have the antidote they seek. As if things weren’t bad enough, the sea rats are moving inland and the shadow of a large predatory bird lurks just at the edge of the woods.
Act 3 – After being mortally poisoned by Scumsnout’s vicious maw, our young Scouts have made it to the Winsome Wraith in one piece, if just barely. While the mysterious stoat’s treatment has bought some precious time, Liam and Sophia must now travel the rest of the way to Redwall Abbey for a more permanent cure. This is the dramatic conclusion of their journey through the murk of Portman’s Slough, the miraculously-functioning puzzles of Grating Gulley, and the ancient ruins of the Otters’ Den.
Key Features
A brand new original story set the winter before the events of the first book.
A stunning woodland world inhabited by charming critters and villainous vermin.
Two characters with divergent dialog for replayability.
Unique real-time scent mechanic fitting for woodlanders who experience the world primarily through their noses.
An assortment of achievements and collectables for the completionist spirit.
Original soundtrack created especially for fans of Redwall.
Fully voice acted by a talented cast of new and established actors.
Engaging puzzles and side stories for those who delight in world building.
Mechanics
The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Anthology debuts a dynamic scent system unlike any game before it. Rather than stagnant, pre-designed paths that imitate scent, particles read the wind and the environment to simulate realistic currents and pools. Scents themselves consist of parts and patterns designed around real scent theory.
When traversing the world of Mossflower, you make use of your mouse agility to explore the world in a unique and wondrous way. Shimmy along ledges, scramble sheer cliffs, and even squeeze through impossibly small spaces. With courage, faith, and friends by your side, Mossflower’s fate rests in your paws!
Rely on stealth, wit, and agility to evade your enemies. Manipulate dull-witted vermin with scent and scent to avoid getting caught in their grubby paws.
Use your trusty way glass to scope the area and identify danger. Rely on your home-made slingshot to solve puzzles, break pots, and activate traps.
Decide if you will prioritize the mission and leave the others to save themselves or take the time to lend a helping paw. Some may praise philanthropy, still others would praise pragmatism.

Redwall fans, rejoice! The Netflix series has a script! I saw the news a while ago but I remebered I wanted to post about it for two reasons: one, I was making a different post and two: The Mario Movie. I hope that they cast Voice Actors only for both, and they get some big names as well as some breakout starts that steal the show.

While rewatching the Redwall series I had a thought.
Both Cluny and Badrang, the villains from Redwall and Martin the Warrior respectively, are voiced by the same person: Diego Matamoros. I always found this a bit odd. They hired a different voice actor, the infamous Tim Curry no less, to voice Slagar who was the villain from Mattimeo; so why not hire someone different to voice Badrang? Diego does a good job, I’m not criticizing his voice acting abilities, but I wonder why they had the same voice actor do the voices of two of the main villains of two of the seasons? Now I know it’s not unusual to have one person provide the voices for multiple characters, but what is strange to me is that Cluny and Badrang sound EXACTLY. THE. SAME. There is no attempt at making Badrang sound any different from Cluny whatsoever.
Which brings me to an idea I had. What if Cluny is the reincarnation of Badrang? They both have a connection to Martin the Warrior. Badrang was defeated by Martin and Cluny constantly has visions/nightmares about Martin to the point where they drive him to attempt to claim Redwall Abbey as his own. Not to mention he wanted to have the tapestry of Martin as his “colors”. Then there is the mystery behind Cluny’s depiction on the tapestry. Matthias himself wonders why Cluny is depicted on the tapestry as it was created long before he was born. The only reason I can think of is that Martin foresaw a new warlord similar to Badrang appearing in the future. We know he has this ability as he also foresaw Matthias becoming his successor. However, I’m sure there have been villains between Badrang’s defeat and Cluny’s rise so why Cluny? Perhaps because Martin also sensed there would be a connection between the two villains, which is why he haunts Cluny and why Cluny is so absolutely terrified of him despite not even knowing who he is. His fear of him is subconscious, from his past life as Badrang.
Having both villains be voiced by the same person with no discernible difference between their voices is just the icing on the cake for me.

Game asks - #5, 11, 17, 20, 25?
5. Favorite game series?
How can I choose just one??? If I have to, it’s probably Pillars of Eternity (which I’m sure is kind of obvious ha)
11. Favorite voice actor from a game?
Oh, so many good choices, but I have to go with Matt Mercer in Pillars of Eternity. His switching between Aloth and Iselmyr is so good and honestly if I didn’t know he also voiced Eder I would never have guessed because they somehow sound so different? I don’t know how he does it
17. Place from a game that you’d like to visit?
Maybe one of the beaches from the pokemon games? Like Slateport City, that looks like such a nice vacation spot!
20. Book that would make a good game?
Did anyone else read the Redwall series as a kid? I feel like those would be really fun games.
Hmmm... *googles*
Holy crap there’s a Redwall game that apparently came out in 2018??? No idea if its any good or not but I must investigate further!
25. What power-up or ability would you want IRL?
I mean, any kind of magic would be awesome. Ooh, or fast travel! Not really an ability, but it would be so convenient!

i was listening to a doctor who audiobook earlier, read by one mr david tennant [i know, i know, get yr giggles out, i had a headache and i wanted something non-screen-y and comforting], and he’s doing the narration in his actual scottish accent and then Voices for all the different characters, which, i’m a child, i love that, my dad used to do voices when he read us redwall and while i had very little patience for being read to—it took so much longer to find out what happened than when you just read silently to yourself!—i quite liked the sound of the moles’ cheerful accents? which in retrospect i’m sure my dad mangled very terribly, but i didn’t know any better, and a good time was had by all.
but anyway the thing that’s funny about what tennant’s doing here isn’t the voices, exactly, or at least, not most of them: it’s his light pastiche of donna, because we come in knowing how her voice is meant to sound, it’s meant to be catherine tate’s; and then most of all it’s tennant’s pastiche of himself-as-ten, because somehow he really does sound like he’s doing an imitation of himself in much the same way he’s doing an imitation of tate, which is so fascinating to me because like, same actor, same character, shouldn’t it sit in his voice the same way the tv dialogue does? and i mean, i imagine the answer is probably just that it’s harder to get into an accent properly at the drop of a hat, so he ends up just sort of shrugging the character over his shoulders and doing a sort of broad-strokes sketch of it, rather than putting it on fully; but, i don’t know, i wouldn’t have expected to be so struck by the difference.

The Scout action adventure requests your support
Tumblr media
The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Act 3 Linux port beside the games Mac and Windows PC builds. Thanks to further details from developer Soma Games. Which is currently available on Steam. Step into the epic, story-rich world of Mossflower. All in the first official Redwall story since 2011. “The Scout” is a linear action adventure game told in three acts. Play as Liam or Sophia, the newest member of the Lilygrove Scout Corps in The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Act 3. As the young mice find themselves on the journey of a lifetime. They are due to save their home from ruthless pirates. Will they reach Redwall and save their friends before all is lost?
Linux Support
This is the premise behind The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Act 3 plot. A game that kept showing itself as a worthy contender, but it's missing a Linux build. So here's the deal.
We will create a post on that subreddit asking for testers or interested players for a Linux port of The Scout. If there is a significant response (more than just a few people) and the post gains some traction. Then we will interpret that as an interested Linux community. And we'll look into bringing the game over to a Linux port.
The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout Act 3 and the rest of the series, developed in Unity 3D. Which makes porting to Linux very feasible from the development side. But the developer also states via email, they want to "bring the game to Linux or want to slight the Linux players." The developer also points out, this does have anything about the studio "not caring about Linux players". Simply that they want to quality the manpower for the port. While getting solid community interest for a Linux build. On top of this, I have also recommended Soma Games to create a post in Linux_gaming. Which is not live, so you can vote and offer your support to the developer.
