the eleventh hour is my favorite dnd arc of all media of all time I'm not joking it is SO NEAT. the world-building is so complete so instantly and you do nothing but learn more about it as you go and it's all so self-contained in a satisfying way rather than a cheap way and it is the coolest most unique set up for a dnd game I've ever seen and I'd give ANYTHING to play something like it. it's a rogue-like escape room made from a whole rustic mining town. it's INCREDIBLE.

When Roswell’s abode was obliterated by the Hunger when it came crashing down, Paloma took up the task of making them a new home with a little help from Magnus. Due to their kindness Roswell had a lovely bird-sized home filled with linen and cotton and wool bedding, with easily accessed nooks for them to keep all their sheriff items and other possessions. If Roswell could cry they probably would have when they were presented with the house, which stands near the roof of the sheriff's department, and when they woke up every morning they always looked at their home with a sense of pride. 

It was hot when they woke up, as it usually was, so after refreshing themselves in the bath that sits outside their home they flew over to Ren’s place to see how she was doing. Roswell’s duties as Sheriff didn’t consist of much at the moment, and to make up for the lack of work they liked to check in on people in the town and make sure they were all doing okay. The town wasn’t in a bad spot, but people were starting to get bored, and that could often lead to trouble. All in all, they could rely on Ren to lend an ear and it was always nice to drop in and see a friend. 

Ren was just opening the Davy Lamp when they flew up and landed on the railing.

“How are you doing today, Ren?” they asked, settling down a little. Ren picked her broom off its hook and smiled.

“As well as ever, Roswell. And yourself?”

“Pretty good. Anything interesting going on today, or just the usual?” 

She chuckled. “A little more than usual today. Taako called me late last night, he’s coming over today to introduce me to Lup. I think he’s pretty excited, and I’d expect Paloma to make an appearance too. Y’know how she loves having someone around who will actually critique her baking.” Ren finished her sweeping and went back inside, gesturing for Roswell to follow her. “Come on in, I’ll give you some strawberry water.” 

Roswell blustered a little. “Oh, there’s no need for that-”

“Come on, Roswell. It’s hot, and I know for a fact you don’t have much to do at the moment. Ten minutes won’t hurt ya.” 

Ren had only just placed a cup down for Roswell when the door was flung open by a very animated Taako followed by a woman that could only be Lup, with how similar they looked. Surprisingly, their colourful entourage was followed up by one Magnus Burnsides, who waved sheepishly after the twins’ dramatic entrance. 

“Ren! How are you, how’s the town? Holy shit, I need to tell you about this new recipe-” Taako started, and then the two of them were off, somehow switching in and out of Elvish as they talked. 

Roswell laughed and shook their head, turning to Magnus who had taken a seat next to them.  

“Roswell! It’s great to see you again, Refuge looks good!” 

“Magnus, how have you been? What brings you to Refuge? I thought you’d be all busy rebuilding after the world almost ended.” Roswell asked. 

Magnus shrugged. “It’s been a couple of months, and Taako wanted to introduce Lup to Ren and Paloma. When he mentioned that Kravitz, his partner, was giving them a ride to Refuge I asked if I could tag along and see if I could help out with anything.” 

“Well that’s very kind of you, but Refuge suffered pretty little against the Hunger. I think Istus might have turned a kind eye on us, so as much as your help is appreciated there isn’t actually that much to do.” Roswell said, tilting their head when Magnus deflated a little. 

“Is there really nothing to do? Even small jobs, I don’t suppose anyone has rebroken the chairs in your office?” 

“No, they’re still intact.” Roswell tittered. “If you asked around I’m sure people would have a few little things, but nothing huge.” 

Magnus sighed and sat back a little, watching Taako rope Lup into the cooking conversation and subsequently getting her and Ren chatting.  He sighed. “I feel terrible about what you all went through there. I wanted to truly, deeply apologise for the damage that my relic caused you. I know what death is like far too well, and I hate that you were all caught up in that loop because of me.”  

Roswell was silent for a moment, not quite sure how to respond. “Magnus, I understand where you’re coming from. The cup did a lot of damage to the people here, there’s no denying that. But I think you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone in this town who blames you for it. They remember you for you, as you were when you brought Jack and June to this town and as you were when you saved us from the cup. There will be a few who choose to hold onto anger and blame, but you can’t carry all of that on your shoulders all the time. No one could.” 

Magnus turned away from the house fire that was the twins and Ren and gave Roswell a small smile. 

“Thanks, Roswell. That means a lot.” Magnus took a breath and stood again, still a little downtrodden, but with a new conviction. “I remember Lup wanted to meet you, if you’re up for that?”

“I’d love to.”

…

The rest of the afternoon was spent catching up and of course meeting Lup, all the while snacking on treats that Paloma had brought up from her cottage when she appeared out of nowhere. It was a rush of activity after weeks of pottering along, and Roswell was glad of it. It was good to get some vigour back in the town, however small. 

When Kravitz (Roswell had heard enough about him at this point to be able to pick the man out by sight) cut a portal in the courtyard to come and pick the trio up, they were sad to see them go.

“Magnus!” They called out before he went through the portal. “Come and visit again soon. Bring the whole crew, liven the place up. We all miss you guys.” 

Magnus laughed. “Of course! Be well, Roswell.” 

“You too, Magnus.” 

And with another day gone, Roswell said goodbye to Ren and Paloma and flew back to their house, getting comfortable in their nest. All up until they went to sleep, they could only think  about all the new ideas they had to bring a little life back into Refuge.

In the past, if someone were to come up to you and tell you that you’d be a part of the One Piece Live Action main cast in the future, you would’ve probably laughed in their faces despite your wishful thinking.

At that time, you were content with your work, doing short theatre plays with companies or gaining minor roles in musicals. Everything changed when you landed the role for the one-woman show Fleabag for a limited time on London’s West End after the leading actress underwent emergency surgery for an appendectomy. You only acted as the sex-obsessed mess of a woman for about three weeks, but it was enough time for people to notice you, to really see you.

You believed your career had reached its pinnacle when you were cast as Katherine Howard in Six: The Musical in London. Your name had become somehow well-known in the musical theatre world, and you had a small but dedicated fan base who liked uploading edits of you being a dork during the Megasix on YouTube and TikTok. 

Months later, you were bound to play as Fantine for Les Miserables when COVID abruptly struck, and you were dismayed that your job was ripped from you so abruptly. Your best friend, the sweetest person on earth, insisted on you moving in with her in fear that you’d be evicted from your apartment.

Months passed, and you eventually found a small way to help your friend pay rent by offering singing and acting lessons online to musical-aspiring teenagers. Since you had gained many followers from your earlier work on social media, it didn’t surprise you when the classes became sold out.

Your friend also convinced you to create a YouTube channel for you to upload videos of yourself (sometimes joined by her) where you watched and commented shitty movies, followed DIY tutorials just for the fun of it, performed covers of your favorite songs, and just generally vlogged your life (along with reactions to Taylor Swift’s (From The Vault) songs).

At first, you thought it was pretty stupid, but you were delightfully proved wrong when your videos harbored over 200k-300k views on a bad day, so you found no reason to stop as COVID-19 continued, growing to gain a little over five hundred thousand followers. Your reactions were often used for TikTok audios or clips, so you found your popularity growing and evolving during that year.

You believed yourself to be a general, simple woman. People liked you because you were elegant and levelheaded, although you could sometimes be chaotic. You also had a subtle sense of humor that many found charming. But mostly, you grew a steady fan base because your videos and presence comforted countless young adults and teenagers.

You were an optimist and a reassuring one, so during the times when COVID was so prominent, people sought refuge from the monstrosities of the world in your videos, where you seemed to connect with them even though you were on the other side of the screen.

However, everything changed somewhere in 2020-2021. That evening, your best friend got home from work with excitement practically oozing out of her every pore. You and your best friend were avid anime watchers and manga readers, so you couldn’t help the face you made when she told you that One Piece was getting a live-action.

Although you were skeptical, your friend practically insisted you send an audition tape. You grimaced at that. It was well-known that live anime actions were almost always corny and cringeworthy compared to the original work, and people never liked them. You had learned that much from Death Note and a couple of others. However, your best friend convinced you with this argument:

“If it’s that bad, then at least you’ll gain more followers out of the memes that people will make, and if it’s good, you’ll still get famous anyway!”

Eventually, you sent a video of you performing one of the lengthy monologues from Fleabag to your agency and simply hoped for the best. Your friend was practically rooting for you to get the role of Anastasia, one of the first integrants of the Straw Hat crew, joining before Sanji and after Usopp. You adored her as she greatly reminded you of your late mother, although you would be happy with any role.

Somewhere in November 2021, you remember a lot of screaming and crying. When you try to look back on it, all you remember is the happiness you felt when you received confirmation of the role of Anastasia. You were practically over the moon, and you and your friend celebrated inside your small apartment. You were entirely alone, just two drunk girls dancing and cheering, until one of the neighbors knocked on the ceiling with a broom.

The One Piece fan base dearly loved the character of Anastasia, a well-mannered, bubbly, upbeat, fashion-loving duchess who always spoke in a Transatlantic accent but also had a quick wit and a bit of a sweet tooth. Anastasia’s dream was to become the most dangerous pirate to ever grace the seas and prove everyone who doubted her wrong.

Of course, with a big character came a big responsibility.

Sometimes, insecurity nearly got the better of you. You had to fill huge shoes, and there were many people to convince and impress. However, your love for this project was bigger than the gnawing uncertainty on the back of your neck, so you continued strongly until the end of Season One, finding comfort in your cast mates and the countless people who counted on you and, most importantly, believed in you.

Oda handpicked you, and that argument alone was enough to shoot any insecurities away.

Well, needless to say, people loved you!

Critics acclaimed your portrayal of the character, as well as the commendable chemistry you shared with the rest of the cast. The fans found it incredibly funny that your character was the complete opposite of how you actually acted in real life, and you often found yourself blissfully immersed in the fan base's love and praise.

Your channel and social media suddenly grew tenfold. Although you had stopped uploading videos every week due to the recording of season one, your followers were more than happy to wait for your return, and as one would expect, they were thrilled to have you back once you did upload a vlog explaining everything.

Over the course of the six months, you had been recording from time to time for a YouTube video in the set. Previously, you had asked the producers for permission to record some behind-the-scenes for your channel and your usual interactions with the rest of the cast with your personal Sony camera, as you felt it would be a nice way to bring the fans and the cast closer.

The producers gave the okay on the condition that you would wait until the first season aired on Netflix. You happily agreed and carefully began recording some scenes of your dressers and hairdressers as they prepared you, a few shots of your instructor showing you how you were supposed to use the guns that Anastasia employed... simple things.

Back in the day, you were still getting acquainted with the other cast members, and you didn't want to seem rude by forcibly making them appear on your videos, so you waited for a few weeks until you could properly call yourself companions. Then, you invited them to appear in the videos.

Iñaki, Taz, and Jacob liked to take advantage of the little free time they had between scenes they didn't appear in to innocently steal your camera and use it to their heart's content. One day, you got home only to find the memory card was completely full. It was an extensive video of them walking around the set, with Taz recording while Kiki and Jacob pointed out random stuff to the people who lived inside your camera, as Jacob liked to call them.

Mackenyu, being more reserved and introverted, mostly liked to act as a cameraman for you as you showed the props you used and other things, often making comments or turning the camera around whenever you referred to something.

Meanwhile, Emily had a natural knack for being in front of the camera. Whenever you asked her to join in, she effortlessly slipped into the co-host role, bantering with you and adding her own insights into the behind-the-scenes world of the show.

With the first season out of the way, you took the time to carefully pick what videos you wanted to use in the final tape, and it took you a little over a month and a half to properly edit it and turn it into a wonderful thirty-minute-long behind-the-scenes. You even sent it to the producers and your co-stars in case there was a scene they wanted deleted. Fortunately, they all gave you the okay.

You teased the video a bit on your Instagram before uploading it a few days later, and the support it received was out of this world. It gained over two million views and hundreds of thousands of likes.

You were kind of expecting this. While some BTS had already been uploaded on YouTube, yours was different because you were showing it from your perspective. The fans loved every second of it, and even started asking for a second or third part. You even saw new videos on YouTube of recompilations from your video with the titles being silly things like The One Piece Cast Being Chaotic for Seven Minutes.

At that moment, your life felt so full. You were getting contacted by industries who wanted you to appear on their videos and their stages, thousands of fans who loved you, and a feeling so peculiar that this would be eternal.

Some watercolor marker TAZ bookmarks I made a long while ago. I realized I never posted them on here.

At this point, this is barely a TAZ AU. I'm kind of just making my own shit up.

Explaination for what the fuck this comic Means under the cut - spoilers for The Adventure Zone: Balance arc!

So. The big Reveal of TAZ is that our main characters were a part of an inter-planar expedition that went horribly wrong. They were chased by the apocalypse (The Hunger) for a hundred years across different planar systems, as it attempted to consume a power known as the Light of Creation. Anytime they failed to retrieve the Light of Creation from a planar system, the Hunger would devour that entire world and all of it's inhabitants.

They realized that if they split the Light of Creation into 7 different parts, they could effectively disguise it's power from the Hunger, and finally find a permanent home. So all of the crew members made a powerful magic item called a Grand Relic from their part of the light.

The plane they did this plan on had a lot of similarities to their home plane - notably, some of their relatives and other people they recognized existed on this plane. This was just a lampshade to explain why one of the main characters cousins had been important to an earlier arc.

Magnus Burnsides created the Temporal Chalice, which allowed the user control over time itself. He entrusted this relic to the small desert town of Refuge, after receiving hospitality from the elder of Refuge and his daughter June, who he called 'Junebug'.

Anyway, all of the crew get their memories wiped and forget all about this, yada yada, I can't get into explaining all of TAZ this post is long enough already.

So 12 years later, the three main guys get recruited by their former crewmate (who they forget existed) (because of the memory wiping) to reclaim all of the Grand Relics, so that they can be combined into the Light of Creation once more.

They find that the town of Refuge has been stuck in a time bubble for quite some time. Time is loopy and strange there, and nobody has been able to get in from the outside world in some time. They go into the town, they die at 11 AM, they wake up inside the town at 10:05AM, it's a timeloop and shenanigans ensue.

Everytime they die, they see an old woman holding a cup who gives them advice. Also, there's a statue of Jack and June and a mysterious figure known as the 'Visitor' in the center of town.

Eventually, they find that the little girl June has been wielding the relic in the underground mines for years - she keeps the town on a timeloop to prevent it from being destroyed by a giant purple worm.

They manage to coax the relic from her, defeat the worm, and restore time to it's natural state.

In the aftermath of it all, June gives Magnus a sketch of the original design for the statue in the center of town. A sketch which reveals what y'all already knew, because I told you a couple of paragraphs ago: Magnus was the mysterious visitor who came to this town and gave them the Chalice.

OKAY. NOW TO COMBINE ALL OF THIS TO TALK ABOUT RUBEN HOPCLAP. Bet you almost forgot.

So... I was coming back around to the idea of "your relatives from your home world might still exist in this plane". And I was thinking about Henry Hopclap, my beloved. And then I was wondering what that would mean for Ruben. Originally, I thought 'oh well, maybe Henrys sister/brother/whatever died and didn't have a kid'. But then I was possessed by these visions.

So, picture this: Ruben Hopclap needs to find somebody to take care of his relic. And he goes to this town... and he sees his uncle. Who he hasn't seen for a century. And his uncle is carrying a tiny baby gnome.

His sister died in childbirth, Henry tells him. Maybe this happened to Ruben's own mother. Maybe it didn't. Either way, it's... a lot to process.

The baby doesn't even have a name, he learns. Henry knows he has to name him eventually, but it just feels wrong. His mother should have been the one to name him.

As Ruben takes all the precautions to ensure the safety of his relic, he bonds with Henry. This guy isn't really his uncle, and he sure as hell isn't his nephew. But it's nice. They form a mutual respect.

As Ruben prepares to leave town, Henry remarks that Ruben is a nice name, isn't it?

And then he gets his memory erased, and a decade passes. And he's in this mission to this town, and he keeps hearing about the kid named Benny who died in the mines. And he keeps seeing this old gnome everytime he dies, who looks like he could be his grandpa, almost.

And then time goes back to normal. And he sees Benny as a little 10 year old, with an unnatural shock of white hair from all of his time using the chalice, but otherwise perfectly normal. And he looks identical to Ruben, when he was that age.

And so he can't help but ask. What's your full name, Benny?

TAZ Paranatural AU! More under cut

Barry makes way too many vampire puns, which ironically makes Kravitz less inclined to think he's a monster, although it does annoy him.

Magnus is a werewolf and probably also a friend of the main group's; he and Barry cover for each other.

Merle is also here and he's in a vague Spender situation, except he also apparently doesn't believe in the supernatural. Yes, he's a whole entire spectral with healing & plant powers.

Merle's prosthetic arm is a tool possessed by the spirit Pan, who slowly makes the arm look wooden and treelike.

Merle is also possessed by a fragment of the Hunger, (a fragment containing John), a great evil spirit that he "defeated" by mistake. Now people and spirits come seeking his power, and he somehow turns a lot of their lives around.

Taako got teal spectral energy probably from unknowingly picking up a possessed object after Lup disappeared; something that gives him shapeshifty powers. Maybe a hat that's slowly becoming a wizard hat, although I didn't draw it here.

Lup's death happened when she was all alone somewhere in Refuge. Taako came in

(Also, Refuge is mostly just "Refuge" in name for now; I don't know if the time shenanigans are the same, but it might have something weird going on like being a fake/constructed town)

I don't know if the "Taako has to whack stuff" thing is actually true about the umbrella; maybe her unique situation allows Lup to help him by activating flame powers without connecting to him. This would, however, be observed by Barry and anyone else as Extremely Weird, because he's almost the opposite spectral energy color from the tool. Taako refuses to allow the umbrella to be taken and investigated, and it's probably circumstances out of his control that finally get it into Kravitz's hands.

taz zombie apocalypse au ...

Everyone has different names for the mould that cascades through the streets, digging its heels into the gaps between pavement stones and bricks and crawling up pipes like long arms begging to be taken to heaven. Some call it The Maw, some The Abyss, some simply Death. Taako and Lup call it The Hunger.

Or - Taako calls it The Hunger. He hasn't heard from Lup in a while. She was studying somewhere far away (Everwind? Everwinter? something like that) when The Hunger hit. She tried to keep up with him, but her radio must've broken or something. Maybe she's turned it off, preserve power. Maybe Everwhatever's dealing with The Hunger better than anywhere else and she's just continued her studies. She promised she'd be back. She promised.

Something in Taako knows, however, that she isn’t coming. That means he has to find her. That means travelling to Ever-whatever-it's-called.

It’s less dangerous on the road, he knows. There were less people, so there'll be less zombies too, less dull, thoughtless husks that The Hunger has incorporated into its mass and is piloting around to bring in more. Images of the things rise to his mind, sentry duty from within Refuge’s keep, carved into the cliff face that protects the town, watching the things shamble about outside. They made almost no sound, and sentry duty was always a pain because you could never see the damn things well enough for a clear, decisive arrow shot.

Enough dwelling. Time to get moving.

Everything Taako needs is kept in his bag; mask, non-perishable food (mainly beef jerky he found at a defunct food bank), water, compass, map, as well as soaps shoved into the bottom for whenever he reaches running water to wash his clothes and himself. He keeps his backup knife in an improvised scabbard on his belt, and has been attaching knives and blades to Lups umbrella at every opportunity. It's now covered in knives at the tips, outside and in, and is - in Taakos professional opinion - a weapon of mass destruction. He couldn't be happier.

He slips out of the musty old basement he'd hidden out in for the night, already wearing his mask, squinting against the dim light of the morning. This is another use for the umbrella, but he doesn't get it out just yet. The dawn is yawning across the sky, the warm colours cracking into the clouds like a stained glass window. He takes a moment to appreciate it, and then orients himself, and continues in his way to find Lup.

taako is obvi jesper. they have the same vibe. in my mind taako is just chillin on davenport’s estate, expecting to get to relax for the rest of his life. he gets sent to the small town of neverwinter, ferried by merle (because he’s perfect to be mogens, he would absolutely trick taako into ringing the bell). not really sure where lup would fit in, maybe she’s sent by dav w taako to supervise him (open to suggestions). ooo maybe she meets barry in they town and they fall in love. anyway

so taako gets there, he has to post 6000 letters, blah blah. krav is the schoolteacher who’s trying to get the hell out of there

i think angus would be that first little boy who gets a toy. he’d be kept inside by his grandpa who never lets him play with anyone

klaus would HAVE to be magnus. i mean cmon. they’re both bears w a big heart, a dead wife, and a love for woodworking

anyway so magnus lives alone in the woods because julia died and he’s all sad, taako goes to the woods, they meet, movie plot

Controversial opinion: Griffin did his """TPKs""" in TAZ better than the end of Neverafter ep. 3

I've seen a few people voicing this kind of thought so I figured I'd throw my two cents in the ring or whatever. Mixed metaphors. Hear me out.

Disclaimer: I trust Brennan enough as a storyteller to see what happens, but with that said...

If you're gonna have a scripted TPK, don't make everyone roll through their death saves. It does cheapen the impact, especially if you've set up the stakes of "if you wake up, the furniture will kill you anyway." Cool, so just say, "you've all died at the hands of the fairy godmother" or whatever and move on with the narrative because clearly you're going somewhere with it.

Related, instead of the cliffhanger being the TPK itself, make the cliffhanger whatever mechanic you've set up for the story - back to TAZ, the cliffhanger of the Eleventh Hour ep. where the boys find out they're in a time loop (which seems to be the prevailing theory for Neverafter? ok) doesn't end with them dying a fiery death in the middle of Refuge, it ENDS with Griffin saying they wake up and see the woman in the white space who tells them they'll "have to do much better than that" and THEN he cuts. It sets up the stakes going forward and makes the audience realize "oh shit, we're gonna be seeing this a lot, huh." And we did. (More on that in point 4.)

The tone of Neverafter vs. TAZ is very different, yeah. Both comedy, but Brennan is leaning a lot darker which actually may be part of the problem. At least it feels like that to me. The TPK felt like his way of saying "this is the horror season, does it feel horrifying yet?" Which. Yeah? I guess? But I'm with Lou about the dome death graphic aka "how many times can they do this". Enough that it loses impact, apparently. I'm getting increasingly salty down this list and I apologize.

Time loops, man. They're fun, but my god can they get repetitive. TAZ did it well, with "save points" that they could fast-forward to if they'd surpassed obstacles in an efficient way. It played like a goofy montage of attempt after attempt of the boys trying and fucking up until they got it, the pacing was good. I don't know if a time loop is where Neverafter is headed (and honestly? I kind of hope it isn't), but if so, they better not have to roll through their death saves every time. :)

Kind of a non-point until we know how things play out in the dome, but the deaths in TAZ were never really. Played as death for death's sake? They furthered the character development and (dare I say) bonds as the crew witnessed each other dying and respawning every time and while they knew it wasn't permanent, it still hurt because it meant a close call against The Hunger, etc. etc. And Eleventh Hour as a microcosm of the larger plot (not that the characters knew that at the time) that is so satisfying to see once you know the story as a whole. If they do a time loop for Neverafter, this feels like a strange way to set it up, since presumably, death will be extremely common, so why make it feel like a shock factor thing when that's what you're heading into? (Another reason I think they might be doing something different).

Anyway. These are my two cents and they are in the ring. No idea if these read coherently, but they're out of my head and that's what matters.
