MIMATO WEEK 2023 DAY 1 - "DIGIVICE"
Tumblr media
FFN / AO3
Summary: After losing their partners, the Digidestined are learning to let go, they're learning to move on with their lives. But what throws them off track is the sudden revival of their Digivices in a way that none of them expected. The word partner has more than one meaning after all. If one is lost, maybe another will be found?

Chapters: 1/?
~~~~~ xxx~~~~~
To live every day with a gaping hole in your life was something that Yamato had now gotten used to.
His routine was simple, wake up, go to college, socialise after classes, come home and sleep, and when the sun rose the next day, rinse and repeat.
This is how things had been ever since Menoa Belluci was apprehended for her actions, ever since Gabumon stood next to him for one last time, before disappearing into a void that Yamato still hadn’t managed to break into. What he had learned from trying, however, was that life goes on despite everything else. Even if he and Taichi could not be there at the scene to resolve the issue of Digimon pouring into their world through random appearances of Digital Gate, someone else was ready to take their place.
Yamato, like many others, had finished playing a role in the grand scheme and had no choice but to accept the next act that awaited him, no matter how small and irrelevant it seemed in comparison.
So that’s what he did, lived life with the hope of making it to the end of the day, ignoring the emptiness that tugged at him from every direction, reminding him of the promise he had made, reminding him of the partner he had lost.
Somewhere along the line, it became difficult for him and Taichi to look each other in the eye after that final battle. Agumon and Gabumon had taken with them the phase of their lives where they depended on each other for everything. From catching up twice or thrice a week, their meetups happened once a month until the two became busy enough to let their get-togethers fizzle out of their schedules and turned them into an occasional message or a short phone call every few months.
Sora had lost Piyomon not soon after, deciding that that was the moment she needed to discover herself anew, moving on to immerse herself in her job and eventually losing touch with most of them. Jou had been the next one to lose Gomamon, he showed up to Yamato’s apartment at 2 AM, crying uncontrollably. Yamato sat with him all night as he sobbed, holding his hand throughout as he held his own tears back. A few months back, Koushiro informed everyone that the timer had appeared for him as well, but so far it was moving slowly so Tentomon was still around. Takeru, Hikari and the other kids were still very much actively trying to work towards solving any Digimon related problems that arose around the world. His brother was sweet enough to not let Patamon tag along when he came by to visit until Yamato told him it was okay to do so.
As crazily as they had been dropped into the Digital World and gotten used to having their partners next to them at all times, eventually, they got used to their disappearance as well. Yamato knew that if he ran into his younger self right now, the little boy would find it hard to believe that he could live every day of his life normally, smiling and laughing, knowing that there was a chance that Gabumon would never appear at his side again. That was probably the only thought that tugged at him the most, every time the idea that he could no longer face his younger self confidently would appear in his mind, Yamato would find it very difficult to look at himself in the mirror.
But, life goes on, and so did Yamato.
Today, he was out socialising after classes with his college friends, the part of his routine that he was always least interested in but could never get out of either. Most of the time the group would go to small izakayas where Yamato would sit cramped between two people he didn’t like, sipping on beer as slowly as possible to avoid getting drunk in front of his classmates. Sometimes he’d be dragged to mixer parties, as much as he tried to say no to these, he was told that the girls would not show up if he didn’t so for the sake of keeping up a good relationship with his classmates he’d allow himself to be showcased as a prize in front of girls he had no interest in. Wanting to try something fresh and new, today his college friends had decided that they would go for karaoke. As Yamato had kept his singing hobby under wraps from this group, he wasn’t looking forward to the night at all but was somewhat relieved to see that only a handful of people joined this escapade.
He was a little proud of himself for managing to avoid taking the mic up for a solo, so far he’d only joined in on choruses when everyone else was singing loudly too, and no one had noticed his bare minimum participation yet. The escape plan became very clear in Yamato’s mind, he’d stand up and join the hype for the next song, then pretend to be tired enough to be excused for the night without suspicion. He tapped his fingers against his knees impatiently, waiting for the two loudest members of the group to come back from the restroom with the hope that they’d pick some loud, rowdy song next which would get everyone in the room worked up for no reason.
Right on queue, the door to their booth opened and for a brief moment the dimly lit room was filled with white light before the two guys shut the door, their loud laughter drowning out the low notes of the ballad currently playing.
“You guys won’t believe what we just saw-”
“It’s so crazy!”
“There’s a girl in the booth next to ours-”
“A really hot girl by the way!”
“And she’s crying her eyes out, it’s insane really.”
Their loud exclamations were met with an uncomfortable silence for a few moments, Yamato was relieved that not everyone in this group thought that a girl in distress was something to laugh about. But as the two boys settled down, a few chuckles and shrugs were passed around their group, dismissing the information as irrelevant as the beginning notes of a preppy song filled the room. Yamato tried not to squirm in his seat as he forced a smile and nodded along to the music, fighting down the suffocating feeling that was trying to overwhelm him. He had planned to stay for one more song but he decided that now would be a good time to escape to the restroom and then come back after a few minutes to take his leave.
Raising his voice to be heard over the boys who were singing, Yamato informed the person sitting next to him that he’d be right back and quietly slipped out of the booth. Once in the empty hallway, he took a deep breath and made his way towards the restrooms. He dawdled around the bathroom stalls, scrolling on his phone and counting down the minutes until he’d need to go back and join the group. Although he hadn’t done much except sit around and fake nod to music he didn’t like, Yamato figured that by the time he got home, he’d be exhausted to the bone.
Deciding that a good ten minutes were more than enough time to go back and make an excuse about not feeling well, Yamato left the restroom and began to make his way back to the booth. When he passed by the booth right next to theirs, his feet automatically came to a halt. He hadn’t peeked inside, he wasn’t rude like his classmates, but something in his heart told him to take a few steps back and see if everything was okay in there. He knew that he wasn’t the best at comforting people, especially when they were crying, but if the person in there really did seem like they were in trouble, then the least he could do was inform the staff so they could come handle it. With that thought in his mind, Yamato confidently took a step back, leaning his head to glance through the large, oval-shaped window in the door.
As Yamato’s eyes landed on the occupant of the booth, his breath got caught in his throat.
His classmates hadn’t lied, the girl sitting inside was indeed crying terribly.
And it just so happened to be that that girl was Mimi Tachikawa.
A million questions raced around Yamato’s mind, should he go in, should he let her be, should he call someone else for help? Takeru would know exactly what to say and Sora would know exactly what to do, but Yamato was neither so at first all he could do was stare at the sight of a completely broken Mimi, fists balled at his side and feet frozen to the ground. He tried to reassure himself, that he didn’t know what had gone wrong, that this could be something personal like an argument with a friend or family member, or perhaps a bad breakup, in which case he really wouldn’t have anything worthwhile to say. It might be best to leave this to the experts, Yamato decided, pulling out his phone to drop a text to Sora. The two hadn’t talked in months but he was sure she would respond immediately out of her concern for Mimi’s well-being. He took a final peek into the booth, just to make sure he’d get all the details right before contacting Sora, and that’s when he noticed it.
Mimi was sitting with her hands clasped above her lap, clutching onto something loosely as she wept uncontrollably. When he moved closer to the door, it didn’t take him even a second to recognise the object in her hand.
She was holding onto her digivice, which once used to be as bright as a clear sky but now lay rusted and lifeless in her hands.
Yamato swallowed a nervous gulp, finally understanding what he was witnessing.
He slipped his phone back into his pants pocket and without hesitation stepped forward, opening the door so he could quietly enter Mimi’s booth. The sound of her crying rose above the music playing in the background. First, Yamato picked up the controller so he could turn off the music, and while setting it back down he noticed the mic that lay on the sofa across from Mimi. He clenched his jaw as an image of Palmon holding the mic and sitting in that dim karaoke booth with Mimi flickered into his mind. He shook his head in an attempt to keep his own emotions at bay before he gently sat down next to Mimi.
She was yet to notice his appearance in the room, when he looked at her face he saw that her eyes were squeezed shut as tears endlessly flowed down across her flushed cheeks, and the sight of her looking so crushed made his heart feel heavy. Her crying voice was also not easy for him to stomach, he was used to her chirpy tone even her slightly high-pitched whiny retorts, but these loud, guttural sobs were something he’d never have associated with Mimi. Being so close to her in this vulnerable state made his own pain resurface. He’d mastered the art of pushing down the numb emptiness he felt in his heart, but now suddenly he could see Gabumon sitting next to Palmon on the sofa across from them.
Yamato closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
Now was not the time for him to be consumed by his own sadness, he was here to help Mimi get through this difficult moment.
With the feeble amount of courage that he could muster, he raised a hand and rested it softly on top of Mimi’s open palms. The effect was immediate, though she did not stop sobbing, Mimi did open her eyes wide as she turned to face him.
As surprised as she looked to find him next to her, when their eyes met it was as if everything that she had tried to hold back by herself burst out of her at once.
“She’s gone, she was right there and now she’s not, she’s gone- my best friend-”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
Yamato squeezed her hands as he tried to maintain eye contact with her without shedding a tear or two of his own. Mimi darted her head around, looking at where Palmon must’ve been sitting and then back at him, caramel eyes filled with tears and grief as she attempted to make sense of the truth.
“My best friend.”
Mimi repeated those words in a hollow tone and Yamato nodded in response, even though her gaze was focused on the empty spot at the sofa across from them.
He wasn’t sure how much time passed after that, he sat there holding onto Mimi’s hands, making sure that she knew that she wasn’t alone. Even if her tears never stopped flowing across her cheeks, or her sobs never stopped echoing across the room, Yamato didn’t leave her side for even a second. It was all he could do really, he thought about saying encouraging shit like ‘it’ll get better’ or ‘you’ll get through this’ but dropped the idea as soon as it appeared in his mind because he knew the truth, it doesn’t get better so easily and nobody gets through this without feeling incomplete.
Mimi didn’t speak much and only stared ahead of herself in a daze. Once in a while, she’d squeeze his hand, maybe in an attempt to let him know that she was still here. He didn’t know if she appreciated his silence, or even his presence, since they’d never been close enough to bare their true feelings in front of the other like this. But he did know that if he’d turned around and walked away after seeing her in such a broken state, he would never have forgiven himself for it.
Which is why Yamato sat silently, almost as if he was a statue, awaiting any kind of signal from Mimi that would let him know that she was okay enough to leave. But it was the karaoke employee speaking through the intercom to inform them that the room’s usage rate was fulfilled, that brought Yamato’s feet back to the ground. With gritted teeth and a hardened jaw, he coaxed Mimi into standing up from her seat. Her footing was wobbly so he allowed her to hold onto his arms for stability. Looking around the room to check they weren’t leaving any of Mimi’s belongings behind, Yamato gently guided her out of the room even as a fresh batch of tears came rolling down her cheeks as she gave one last glance in the direction of where Palmon had stood last.
He was grateful that the employees they passed on their way out did not seem to bat an eyelid at the odd sight the two of them made, but his luck only lasted for so long. Once out on the street, the two received peculiar looks from the passers-by, with most of them directed at Yamato since he’d draped a protective arm around Mimi’s shoulders to ensure she wouldn’t walk into a busy street in her daze. He knew, however, that they wouldn’t be able to get too far like this, without some well-meaning stranger stopping them and enquiring about why Mimi looked so distressed. Spotting a brightly lit convenience store a few steps ahead, Yamato quickly led them to it, hoping to reduce any suspicion towards him if he talked with her in an easily accessible location.
“Mimi, which way is your home?” He tried to ask the question calmly, he didn’t want to burden her with more tiresome thoughts but knowing where they were supposed to go would make this whole ordeal so much more easier on him.
“I don’t know. I don’t know anything anymore,” she mumbled to herself, her eyes fixed on the pavement as she staggered for a moment before clutching onto his chest to keep herself standing straight.
“I can’t take you home if you don’t help me out here.” Yamato pleaded with her softly, hesitantly resting a hand on the small of her back to make sure she wouldn’t stumble again.
“I don’t care where you take me, it doesn’t matter anymore. Nothing matters anymore.”
Mimi spoke in a voice that was barely above a whisper before she leaned her head against his chest and let her body go limp. While Yamato understood that the whole situation had drained her of all her strength, he’d still hoped that she would be able to stay upright till they reached her house. Instead, he was left having to get her on his back all by himself in the corner of a street without looking suspicious.
With great difficulty and after a few awkward eye contacts with passing strangers, Yamato managed to get Mimi safely tucked onto his back and began to make his way towards his apartment, which thankfully wasn’t a long walk from the neighbourhood they were in. He wasn’t sure if he should inform anyone that he was taking Mimi back to his place since she was in no state to get herself home safely because he had no clue if she still lived with her parents. He thought about checking with Takeru, but the whole conversation that that one question would lead to was something Yamato didn’t have any energy for presently.
So with the occasional huff and a few rest stops, Yamato managed to carry Mimi safely back to his small apartment. Once inside, he made straight for his room, glad about his neat freak tendencies since he could just lay Mimi down on his bed without a single worry. He tried his best to settle her on the mattress comfortably, arranging pillows behind her head, taking off her shoes delicately, and covering her with as many blankets as he could find. During all this, Mimi didn’t even flinch once, which in a way was a blessing since it made things less embarrassing.
After he was done bubble-wrapping her into comfort, Yamato glanced at her face. She looked like she had passed out from exhaustion, which was probably the case anyway. Her eyes were swollen, her cheeks were tearstained and tinted pink, the tip of her nose was as red as a tomato, her lips were swollen too from being bitten at carelessly, and her hair lay dishevelled around her face, in other words, she looked like a complete mess.
Yet, the sight of her ignited something inside of Yamato.
He stood there for a few minutes, just staring at her.
He vaguely remembered the first time they’d met at school, he hadn’t paid her much attention at the time. It was only when they went to the Digital World, had he started to notice her.
He’d always liked how easily she managed to gel with Takeru, the youngest one in the group at first, and how she always spoke to him as a friend on the same level, not as somebody older who was trying to assert themselves onto him, something Yamato himself was guilty of at many occasions. He’d always liked how much she cared about everything and everyone, so much so that sometimes those feelings spilt into impulsive or brash actions, but her intentions always remained pure and he’d always noticed that.
There was no denying, that the two had drifted slightly apart as they grew older, with Mimi moving to America and only visiting them once in a while. He always found it difficult to strike up a conversation with her when she’d come back from the States, he felt that nothing about his life here would interest her much in comparison. After they graduated from high school, she did try her best to stay in touch with each of their friends individually, sometimes Yamato would receive a message at midnight asking him about how his day had gone, which always threw him off guard. Lately, he had been lacking in responding to even the shortest questions she sent in, but that hadn’t stopped her from trying.
Now that he stood in his room, watching her chest rise and fall in a slow, tired rhythm, he regretted putting off replying to her messages. Maybe if he’d kept in touch regularly, he might have known about her time with Palmon being limited. Not that knowing about this could have prepared him any better for handling the situation, but still, at least she would’ve known that she could count on him to get through this.
Instinctively, Yamato's hand reached forward and he brushed a few strands of her hair away from her forehead, leaning his face down so he could get a better look at hers.
It would be a while before he’d be able to forget the sight of her sobbing alone in that dimly lit karaoke booth, but he still hoped that tomorrow when she woke up, her face would have the budding hints of her usual brightness, because he really could do with some sunshine and happy smiles in his life.
Shaking his head at the ridiculous thought, Yamato walked out of his room, quietly shutting the door behind him. He eyed his cramped couch with contempt before sighing in defeat as he didn’t have a choice. He tried to rearrange the two cushions on the couch into a headrest for himself, however before he could lie down, a flicker at the corner of his eye caught his attention. Yamato surveyed his living room carefully, trying to find the object that had disrupted his concentration but nothing stood out for a while. After a few minutes, just as he was about to give up on the idea of finding anything, he saw a flicker of light on the shelf that took over the opposite side of his living room.
Abandoning the couch, Yamato stepped closer to the shelf as the light appeared for a brief moment before disappearing again. The shelf wasn’t cluttered, there were a few photo frames with his family and friends featured on them, some books and a succulent or two. The light had appeared in the centre, so that’s the direction he leaned closer in. In the middle of the shelf was the photo of him and the other kids from their very first adventure into the Digital World, next to it was the harmonica his father had gifted him that summer along with his battered and broken digivice. Not even one of these items was capable of making the light he’d witnessed, Yamato thought, maybe it was just a trick the nightlights from outside the window had played on his eyes. But just as this thought appeared in his mind, it happened once more, and this time he was able to witness the source.
Yamato had kept his digivice out in the open like this because he knew that it was nothing but a piece of memorabilia for him now. The digivice had laid unresponsive on this shelf since the day Gabumon had departed.
And yet, tonight was different.
The minute Yamato fixed his gaze on it, the digivice lit up intensely in a shade that he knew was not meant to represent either him or Gabumon.
Yamato stood frozen in his living room, eyes wide with shock as a bright green glow surrounded his digivice.
Slowly, the light around the digivice dimmed, but to Yamato’s surprise, the digivice that had been lying rusted for days now looked as alive as ever, the only catch?
It had turned completely green.
Takari Week 2024
Fourth Day: Fourth Contact:
Title: Digimon ‘Whirled’ Tour Misunderstandings
Summary: Hikari, covered in ink and tired from her journey while traveling home on Imperialdramon after her trip to HongKong has some interesting conversations with Koushirou and Takeru. These talks lead to some misunderstandings due to some poorly timed phrasing from their partners and even hers as well where she will have to clear her name.
***
It had been forever since Hikari had seen Takeru. Ok, maybe less than twenty four hours thanks to Imperialdramon’s blistering light speed taxi that dropped them off to all corners of the world and then back again...But still. She couldn’t wait to see him again yet wished it could have been under better circumstances.
The briny scent of the ink from the three brother’s Octomon Digimon clung to her hair like a sticky sweat. The burning sun and dusty winds also did not help, Hikari feeling worse for wear. Koushiro himself had come out of it unfazed, having somehow been so interlocked and focused on his planning/computer work it shielded him from any Digital or environmental hazards.
Hikari had not noticed she had been staring at him, Koushiro looking a bit nervous, pausing, and then resuming typing on his computer. “Hikarichan,” he said, “I can’t concentrate when you’re looking at me like that. Do I have something on my face or something?”
Hikari shook her head a bit. “N-no,” she said, “Its just that I’m just surprised. How is it that I look like I’ve walked through a wilderness and a pen factory, but you look like you just got out of the shower? We were both at the same place so I’m just wondering how can you be so clean after our last adventure?”
The typing of hands tapping on Koushiro's keyboard immediately ceased. His eyes locked onto the screen, but as if he was looking at something else.
“Koushirousan?” she questioned, Koushiro not turning away.
Sweat beaded down Koushiro's face, his breathing shallow.
“Oh no,” Tentomon said, crawling up on his back inspecting him with his pincers. “It’s happening again.”
Hikari stared at them both confused. “I’m sorry, did I miss something?”
“You wouldn’t know it,” he answered, “But Koushiro has what you call post traumatic stress disorder,” he said. “My Koushiro has been living with it for a long time.”
“PTSD?!” Hikari said a bit shocked. “I had no idea! I can’t believe that our Digimon Adventuring left that much of an impression on you! But you’ve never showed that side of yourself before,” she said calming down. “What changed?”
“Hmm?” he said, turning towards Koushiro, Koushiro weakly glancing at him and nodding his head.
“Oh, you don’t know, do you?”
“Know what?”
“The terror of soccer.”
“Terror of soccer?”
She glanced up, Koushiro's face turning even more despairing as if he had just accepted he would die. His hands trembled, his eyes shivering as if not wanting to relive something unpleasant.
“You see,” Tentomon buzzed manner of factually with his pincers, “Koushiro told me about it. Back when he was little he often went to Taichi’s soccer games.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful!” she said, Tentomon glancing at Koushiro and patting his back.
“But, that’s the problem!” he gestured holding them both up. “That was back when Taichi was not, shall we say, very good.”
“Oh?”
“I still remember it quite well,” Koushiro said his breathing shallow. “Hey Koushiro! Koushiro look at me! Watch this! You’re not paying attention!” he said repeating inflections, placing his thumb and index finger spread apart touching his cheeks so the small curve of skin between them was pressed to his lips shaking.
“I used to watch his games, but the moment I looked at my computer a soccer ball came flying at me. No matter what I did, or position I maintained, I always locked on me somehow like a heat seeking missile- even when I actually sat in a tree watching from overhead!” he said incredulously over the bizarre situation. Over time I learned how to handle such trauma,” he sighed out. “...I never want to go through such a learning curve ever again.”
“Well, that and Taichi did get better,” Tentomon said making sucking squishing sounds between his tiny fangs in his mouth, Hikari a bit creeped out by it, but realized that must have been how he laughed.
“But by that time my Koushiro had adapted natural reflexes towards anything coming his way. Regardless it was a soccer ball or a Digimon attack, Koushiro could dodge it or bat it away and continue his work on the computer as if nothing had happened.
“That’s...impressive,” Hikari said glancing at Koushiro a bit differently as if he was a battle hardened soldier. It was no wonder he got so perturbed so easily when he multi tasked and someone interrupted him.
“Regardless,” Koushiro said, “The only way to snap him back out of this was either green tea or...lavish praise.”
“What, like saying ‘good job?” Hikari questioned.
“Yes, but you’d have to take it up a notch by a scale of 100!”
“Huh,” Hikari pondered.
“And it can’t just be one or two people. It has to be everyone present. Even you Tailmon.”
“Even me?”
“His pride won’t let him recover until everyone in the room acknowledges him.”
“Huh, you’ve got it tough,” Tailmon acknowledged. “All right, I’m in.”
“Very well,” Tentomon said. “I’ll start. Follow my lead,” he said holding up his claws and waiving them as if conducting a symphony. “And a one a two,” he said, “And a now! Koushiro is an outstanding upstanding citizen!”
“That’s a compliment?” Hikari said having a hard time believing they were actually doing this.
“Anything works!” Tentomon said still holding up his claws. “In fact I accidentally told him one time he was the smartest pizza maker! I think he just honed in on the ‘smartest’ part.”
“I think I get it now,” Hikari said having understood. “We just need to inflate his ego.”
“Let’s try it Hikari,” Tailmon smiled nodding her head
With that all three of them started singing Koushiro's praises one by one, some of them even starting to overlap together, this continuing on for several minutes, Hikari starting to feel dazed at the chaos of their words clashing like three symphonies overlapping and their notes narrowly avoiding colliding into each other. Worse, she had been running out of things to say!
Koushiro seemed to still be out of it, Hikari's’ turning having come around again.
“Hikari?” Tailmon said looking at her expectantly.
“Don’t stop now!” Tentomon said trying to keep everyone together. “We need one last push! Anything! Make it up if you have to!”
Hikari searched her mind this way and that, and knew she just had to say something. “K-Koushirou is the only one who can handle my mom’s special recipes!” she yelled raising her voice, Tentomon stopping.
Tentomon stopped, the imaginary rhythm he had been connecting coming to an end.
Koushirou stared at his computer, blinked his eyes a couple of times and glanced up at them all having regained his composure.
“I’ll have you know,” he said, “Those recipes are delicious,” he said. “I could eat blueberry bean spinach casserole any day of the week!”
“Koushirou!” Tentomon said relieved giving him a hug, “You’re back with us!”
“Yeah, I’m here,” he said calmly typing on his computer again. “Though, I don’t remember why I stopped working to begin with. Did something happen?”
Tailmon and Hikari exchanged glances, both of them silently acknowledging the same thing: Koushirou had become so traumatized he had blocked the memory out completely.
Don’t worry about it. Oh look,” Tentomon said flying over to the barrier wall and sticking to it. “Looks like we’re at the next stop!”
***
Eventually Imperialdramon had reached the other locations, the Digidestined greeting each other and catching up, Hikari a bit winded from this Reunited Digidestined Celebration. Lastly they started to slow down landing on the ground with a bit of a rumble, Hikari wishing Imperialdramon had seat belts, but thankfully none of them suffered jet lag...except Jou of course being comforted by Gomamon.
As it slowed down, Hikari felt her heart leap as Taichi and Takeru came up. A pretty girl with blue eyes and blonde hair and a Floramon waving at them. Both Taichi and Takeru waved back,Taichi grinning stupidly which meant that Hikari knew by his mannerisms he had gotten involved more than he probably should have. But that shouldn’t be a problem.
As the other Digidestined greeted them, Takeru walked over to the gleaming blue light and leaned back into the wall sighing out.
“Welcome back...Takerukun,” she said having turned away from him a bit.
“You to Hikarichan. Felt like I haven’t seen you in forever, even though it’s only been less than a day. Kind of weird huh?” he smiled Hikari turning his way, realizing he must have also missed her. She couldn’t react too strongly though in case he might think she cared for him more than what she was letting on, even if it was true.
“Mhm. Time flies when you’re...on Imperialdramon,” she said, Takeru just staring at her.
“And I thought I was tired,” he said lifting up his head and sliding to the ground, Hikari just glancing down at him a bit anxious.
“Hikari, you’ve been standing up this whole time. You sit too,” Tailmon said grabbing her by the hands and making her sit down next to him.
She then sat down as well, Patamon having found comfort curled up resting on Takeru’s hat.
She glanced down at Tailmon who had already passed out, her head nodded down against the wall.
“Our Digimon are really something,” he said. “They work so hard for us. We couldn’t ask for better partners.”
“Mhm,” she said stroking Tailmon’s fur, her ears folding back a bit.
Takeru glanced up at Patamon and tickled his ears a bit, both Digimon mumbling in their sleep.
“Anything interesting happen?” Takeru asked. “You know, aside from probably needing a shower.”
Hikari glanced away from him wishing he had not noticed that. Of course, that would have been impossible.
“Aside from this, nothing,” she said not wanting to talk about herself.“What about you?” Hikari asked, “Taichi was smiling so wide something must have happened. And he’ll never tell me, just get mad and tell me not to worry about it.”
“That sounds like Taichisan all right,” Takeru chuckled. “But, no nothing I could think o-”
“-Takeru,” Patamon moaned sweetly in his sleep, “Why are you kissing that girl?”
His eyes froze, Hikari staring at him, her mouth open.
She wanted to say something, but refrained herself at least for now. She could only could think about that blonde haired girl Katherine she had seen him wave to earlier. She was really pretty too.
Hikari pursed her lips holding them shut not wanting to imagine him kissing another girl. She could have sworn she heard voices in her head saying ‘What’s wrong with them?’ And another voice saying ‘The Lovebirds are being dramatic again’ but she just looked up at him expectantly for an answer.
She wanted to ask it. To ask if it was true he did that to say-
“-All right Hikarichan,” Takeru smirked, “I know you want to ask me if I really kissed a girl. Probably the Katherine girl, am I right?”
Hikari lowered her head and nodded.
“Well, I actually did. And Taichi too!”
Hikari felt her heart sink and then her stomach twist hurt and then horribly confused at the same time.
What kind of situation or relationship would Takeru and her brother and Katherine have to be in to...have such a...relationship? She imagined Katherine wasn’t so nice and had them chained like dogs enacting all kinds of torture on them with chains and a whip and the dogs enjoying it.
“Hikarichan? Hikarichan?” Takeru said having interrupted her imagination.
“Hmm?” she said glancing at Takeru like a dog as if he was beneath her. She couldn’t believe the Takeru she knew so well had-
“-I think you’re misunderstanding something,” he said with a wry smile. “In France people greet each other with a little kiss on the cheek.”
“On the cheek?” she said turning her face his way.
“Mhm, It was pretty awkward for me and Taichi but we managed to do it near the end of our adventure there. Part of my family has a french background. It felt kind of...familiar. I don’t remember ever going there though. It must have been while I was little.”
“Oh,” she said, Her face staring back down not wanting to look up at him. She should have realized the context of all of this. Why was she so flustered? Takeru was her friend. He had the right to do anything he wanted to. They were not going out or anything. It felt wrong of her to even think of him in a negative light.
She sighed out. “I’m sorry Takerukun,” she said. “I could only imagine about what you said when the both of you had kissed her.”
“Right?” he smiled as if a bit relieved. “I mean it’s not like I would come to any weird misunderstanding about you if I heard something about-”
-Tailmon meowed out loud like a yawn, holding up one paw weakly as if warding something away. “No, get away. Hikari, you can’t allow all three of them to surround you like that! Those brothers are dangerous.”
Hikari stared down a bit nervously, a strange pressure glaring down at her from overhead. She slowly lifted up her head to see Takeru smiling, but it wasn’t a happy smile. It seemed kind of...angry.
“Well, I’m sure YOU must be tired from your journey Hikarichan,” he said as if looking past the situation. “I’m sure all the attention really must have been exhausting. Since YOU put yourself in that situation maybe YOU should just sleep it off,” he said, Hikari irritated by his inflections.
“N-no That’s not it!” She protested. “I didn’t choose to! They came at me!”
“What? They came at you Hikarichan?” Takeru said turning seriously, his now icy blue eyes glancing her way and cracking his knuckles in a fist that somehow made Takeru look not only incredibly attractive to her, but also kind of dangerous.
Hikari didn’t know what to do anymore about the situation. She hit her head back against the blue barrier of Imperialdramon wanting to snap herself out of it. She couldn’t lie. Just like she imagined Takeru having once been that Katherine’s ‘Pet’ she couldn’t stop her mind from seeing Takeru beat up a bunch of guys, Takeru shielding her in a seductive manner. It was even worse, or in this case better than Miyako sharing her romantic fan fiction stories with her.
“So, did you get their names?” he asked. “Maybe I’ll have Imperialdramon fly back after everyone else gets off.”
“No, don’t do that,” she said with an exhausted smile. “I can already tell what you’re thinking. But really it was no worse than Daisuke if there was three of him.”
Takeru’s eyes lit up a bit as if having snapped out of it. He also leaned back against the barrier resting his head against it. “I don’t know...if I could win against that,” he sighed with a smile.
“Thankfully I’m gone now though,” Hikari agreed. “I might have had a nervous break down if I had stayed any longer.”
Takeru snickered Hikari returning his back with a sweet smile. She really did miss him. Despite what they thought happened to each other, it was just one big misunderstanding after all. Maybe he even felt jealous too?”
The thought seemed so pleasant, Hikari’s mind drifting back to her imagination about Takeru. She couldn’t get that image out of his mind...in a good way.
“Hikari!” Miyako exclaimed running over to her and sliding down next to her. “Oh, good, your warm. I have the latest chapter on my fan fiction by the way. I wanted to know if you wanted to read it.”
“Maybe later,” she said. “It’s good to see you Miyakochan. “Did you have fun?”
“Of course!” she said. “And I got to meet Yuri, one of the cutest boys I’ve ever met! Man, I’m so lucky! I probably had the best romantic chance meeting yet out of all of us. And there was no weird misunderstandings,” she said both Takeru and Hikari smiling at each other, as if it was there own little secret. “In fact, I’m sure none of us had any-
A shocked gasp escaped from in front of them as everyone looked at Ken.
Both Sora and Mimi stood on either side of him both angry and demanding.
“What do you mean Ken clinged to a little girl?!” they said in unison towering over him.
“Wormmon!” Ken snapped agitated. “Phrasing! Phrasing!”
Hikari couldn’t help but smile just a little more matching Takeru’s smile with her own.
Just then Iori walked over to them a bit wary of them.
“Whatever’s the matter Iorikun?” Hikari asked.
“Come have a seat with us!” Takeru added.
Iori started to slowly back away from them. “You look like your enjoying this,” he said. “Is it that fun to take joy in watching one of your friends suffer?”
“What?” Hikari said turning towards Takeru.
“That’s not what we’re doing,” he said. “Really Iorisan you have such an imagination.”
“I’m not imagining!” he said defensively. “And you’re not answering my question!”
“N-no you’re just misunderstanding,”Takeru said getting up. “Look we’re almost back to Japan!”
Hikari adored him as he continued playing with Iori, dodging his question, Takeru turning back towards her with gladness.
She smiled back, Miyako glancing up at her. “Seriously, would you two just cut it out and stop telepathically communicating while smiling? I haven’t gotten that far even in my fan fictions!”
She could only be amused by her, Hikari knowing this must have been exactly how Takeru felt. She missed that about him; His jokes, his witty sense of humor, his protective eyes that would cut someone to pieces if anything threatened her. Sometimes he even made her feel safer than her own Digimon who could go to the mega level!
She glanced at him a bit differently affectionately retaining the image in his mind of the Takeru she knew so well. Whether being serious or joking and laughing with her, Takeru was Takeru. And no misunderstanding or fantasy could ever change that.
Dreaming To Reality: Oneiromancy Chapter Twenty Nine - 11
“I’ll have to look into my program and see why it didn’t notice Ken this time,” Koshiro said with a shake of his head even as he typed away at his advanced D-Terminal. Once done, he set down his DT2 and sighed. “I thought I had finally gotten all the bugs out, but it seems like I’m still not where I’d like to be.”
“Do not take it to heart, dear boy,” Zeed said with a shake of his head. He offered the boy a smile when their gazes met, flashing his sharp, pearly white teeth in a charming way. “Your programs are wonderous - they will simply never be as wondrous as I. That is certainly no flaw on your part, but more that I am too incredible to be perfectly imitated. Besides, there may be an explanation that you are not aware of - one that is entirely not your fault. After all, it worked before, did it not?”
“That’s true,” Koshiro agreed, with a vapid smile. “Thank you, Lord Zeed. You are just so kind and wise.”
“And don’t forget all-powerful!” Tentomon chirped from his position on his pillow seat.
“But of course,” Zeed replied, cheerfully.
---
It was hard for Ryo to sit still and do nothing. All of the revelations weighing on him felt so big, so heavy on his shoulders.
Zeed was his partner. It couldn’t be true. Even though Higashi admitted as much, it still didn’t feel real to Ryo, no matter how disturbingly neat and tidy the details lined up the more he thought about them.
Ryo stared up at the ceiling as he lay back in his bed, his mind spinning with thoughts.
A sudden beep cut through the silence, and Ryo jolted upright. He quickly checked his D-Terminal to see who was calling him, rather than answering immediately as he did last time. He didn’t want a repeat of last time, when he accidentally revealed to Neemon that he was still alive.
Unfortunately, that was precisely who was calling him.
Ryo gawked as the D-Terminal identified Neemon as the caller. His first reaction was to reject the very idea of answering the call. Knowing now how dangerous the Digimon was, there was no way an incoming conversation from his attempted murderer could be any good.However, as the call continued to ring, a small bell began to sound in the back of Ryo’s head - a warning bell. He suddenly found himself filled with dread, and urgency. His instincts were telling him that he needed to answer the call, right now.
Koushiro Week 2022 - Day 7: Free Day
Days: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] Title: Overcoming Characters: Koushiro Izumi, Jou Kido, Tentomon and Akemi Murakami (OC). Summary: Koushiro is nervous about his first date with Akemi and turns to Jou for support. Koushiro didn’t know how long he had spent sitting on his bed. The clock kept tickling, but he still wasn’t able to move an inch. He knew he would be late and it was the last thing he wanted, but his nervousness and fear were paralyzing him. Somehow he found the strength to pick up his phone and tried to call Sora, but she didn’t pick up. So he kept scrolling down his contact list and pressed the call button as soon as he came across his second choice. “Hello?” “Hey, Jou. It’s me.” “Is everything alright?” “Yes, yes, it is. At least, I think so.” Koushiro took a deep breath. “Actually, no, it’s not.” “What happened, Koushiro?” “I’m freaking out.” “Why? What’s wrong?” “I have a date and don’t know what to do or to say.” “Okay, take a deep breath. It’s not the end of the world. You can do this.” “What am I supposed to do?” He asked desperately. “Is it a rule to kiss a girl on the first date? Should I pay for her?” “The kissing part depends on how the date goes.” “And how do I know that?” “If you two are having fun; if you can talk to each other almost all the time. These are two of the things that indicate the date is going well. Then a kiss can happen at some point.” “I should just cancel it.” Koushiro ruffled his red hair roughly. “It’s better for everyone.” “How much do you like this girl?” “What?” “How much do you like this girl?” Jou repeated. “And does she like you too?” “I suppose so. We kind of asked each other out together, so that must mean something. Right?” “Usually, yes. How would you feel if she canceled it with you?” “I would be upset, probably.” “So you have your answer.” “How do you know so much about this?” “Actually, I’ve recently started dating.” “What?” Koushiro asked surprised. “You’re dating? Is it someone from the hospital?” “Yes, she’s a pediatrician. We met when we were doing rounds during med school. But I’ll tell you about her another time. What about you?” “We met in college. She’s a friend of one of my classmates. We got along right away and walk home together everyday.” “Interesting. And tell me… do you miss it when you don’t go home together?” “Yes…” He confessed. “I do. Does that mean I’m in love with her?” “That’s something you’ll figure out on your own. But you do have feelings for her, though you’ve realized it by now.” “Yeah… what do I do, Jou?” “You go out with her and see what happens. The best thing it can happen is you end up with a girlfriend.” “And the worst one?” “You realize you two are better of as friends, which is totally fine by the way.” “I guess so.” “I guarantee you’ll enjoy it. It’s almost like going out with a friend, like how you and Mimi did a few years ago.” “Okay, I can do that.” Koushiro looked at his watch. “I have to go, or I’ll be late.” “Alright. Good luck.” “Thank you.”
About fifteen minutes later, Koushiro was standing in front of the bathroom mirror taking a final look at himself after he fixed his tie. Then he returned to his bedroom and grabbed his two favorite colognes. “Tentomon, can you help me with something?” “Sure.” The Digimon landed beside him. “What do you need?” “Which one do you think it’s better?” He sprayed the perfumes on his partner and he immediately started sneezing. “Oh my God, I’m sorry! I didn’t know you were allergic to perfume.” “The smell is very strong.” “I think so too. I’m very sorry about this.” “Don’t worry about it.” Tentomon said tearful. “I get so emotional seeing you getting ready to go out on a date. I’ve been waiting for this moment so long.” “Oh no, don’t cry, Tentomon. It’s not a big deal, really.” “To me, it is. I’m so happy!” “Silly.” Koushiro couldn’t help but laugh. “So which one?” “The second one, for sure. Where did you get it?” “That’s my favorite one too. Takeru gave me for my birthday last year. I didn’t enjoy the scent back then, but now I think it’s not so bad.” He sprayed some of the cologne on himself and turned to Tentomon. “So, how do I look?” “You look great, Koushiro!” “Do you think it’s too formal? Maybe I should take my tie off.” “Maybe a little, but if you’re comfortable about it, that’s what matters.” “I am, but I want to try something more casual.” “Like leave the top button open like Taichi does sometimes?” “That’s a little too much for me.” The man laughed and removed his tie. “What do you think?” “Definitely without tie.” “I think so too. It’s settled then.” Koushiro put it back on a hanger and put it away. “Are you ready?” “Can’t I really go with you? I promise I’ll stay outside and won’t bother you.” “It’s safer if you stay with Jou while I’m out. I promise I will pick you up when the date is over.” “Okay.” “Come on, it will be fun with him and Gomamon.” “I know, I just really wanted to meet your girlfriend.” “She’s not my girlfriend, Tentomon.” “But she will be.” “You’ll get to meet her soon, I promise. Let’s go, I’m already late to meet her.” “Alright.” Tentomon followed his partner closely out of their apartment and then to the garage.
 “Koushirou-han?”
 Tentomon apprehensively eyed his partner while he was slowly getting ready for bed, putting on his night clothing. Upon having enjoyed the delicious food during their dinner out, Motimon had managed to evolve again and overall, it had been an enjoyable evening with a gentle atmosphere.
 Koushirou had needed the loving embrace of spending time with his family. Focusing on their own Christmas tradition, it had been cheerful enough to keep himself distracted from overthinking everything that had happened this day.
 That was until they had gotten home again and a text message from Sora had pulled him right back into reality.
 “I hope everything went well on your way home. 😊“
 “You know I have to bring this up now, but I really think you startled Taichi-han a little too much out there.”
 Hearing that, Koushirou couldn’t help but to sigh out loud.
 “I did, didn’t I?”, he murmured in a defeated tone before laying down on his bed, facing the ceiling. His tablet was lying next to him – he had contemplated booting up his main computer, as he assumed there wouldn’t be any use in even trying to get any sleep tonight, but he had promised his mother to take care of himself. So the tablet had to do to keep him occupied.
 Kae had obviously seen the news – and knew how his Digimon partner looked in his evolved state, so both her and Masami were aware that their son had once again contributed to saving the city.
 Or at least saving something.
 “I still don’t fully understand why this is such a big deal”, Tentomon made an exasperated noise, curling himself together on the bed as well, attracting his partner’s attention. “Why couldn’t ya have made him open the present right there and then?”
 Thinking back on it, replaying the scene over and over again, Koushirou definitely would have described Taichi’s reaction to his sudden present exchange as ‘startled’. No matter how often he repeated the scenario in his head, he was certain that Taichi must have taken it the wrong way – as much as he was certain that Taichi had thrown his entire heart at him, expecting him to catch it. And since he didn’t do it immediately, he couldn’t even blame him for the hasty departure. He himself had basically triggered that by acting as if a bee had stung him…
 “It didn’t seem to be the appropriate moment”, he simply replied, ignoring the slightly painful throbbing in his chest while returning Tentomon’s gaze. He wasn’t exactly the most superstitious person – in fact, he wasn’t superstitious at all –, but there was indeed something inside him that had insisted for it to actually be Christmas Day before they’d all open their presents.
 “Appropriate moment?”, Tentomon repeated, head tilted. “Ah, because you still don’t feel prepared…?”
 Looking back at the ceiling, Koushirou wondered when Sora had gotten home herself – and whether it had been her initial plan to spend more time with Yamato previously, so she had deliberately stayed behind to leave him and Taichi alone.
 He meant to ask her as soon as the opportunity would come up. But first, he needed to safely pick up Taichi’s – probably – wounded heart.
 “No, I’d say I was prepared.”
 The second he had noticed Taichi’s hand approaching him, he had almost intuitively wanted to lean in. Never ever in his life had he longed, craved for physical touch as much as he had done in this very moment.
 “Maybe it were my feelings for you causing it all. You know… My feelings of love.”
 Almost as if someone had punched him in the face, his head had stepped up before his heart could have taken over completely though.
  “But… I believe that’s exactly why I had to stop myself”, he eventually whispered, before switching off his room lamp, the only light source now being the display of his tablet.
 “Eh?”
 Koushirou’s glance shifted to his desk, knowing that a bag of cookies would be waiting for him in the morning. Even if he couldn’t see it in the dark, its presence was positively overwhelming.
 His own heart was overflowing with affection, adoration, thankfulness and an icky glimpse of guilt.
 He knew what he wanted. He knew he had to take this chance. Even if that meant waiting an – agonizingly long – bit longer.
 “To see if I’ll still feel prepared tomorrow.”
Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 20: The Seventh One Awakens (Review)
Thoughts on the twentieth episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.
I quite liked this episode. Probably because of my immense love for the Takaishida brothers. Can you tell from the screenshots? :P
I really liked how desperate Yamato was to save Takeru. It brought more realism to a show that otherwise dodges it. XD;
Velgrmon is a cool-looking digimon and a worthy opponent.
Megadramon totally didn’t appear just to get Leomon out of the way so that our heroes could shine, right? No way. :P
Someone should count how many times Yamato and Takeru said each other’s names this episode. It might be more times than Yuuko Yagami thought about her son the entire series! :P
MetalGreymon’s small, weak, damaged-looking wings allow him to fly? Who knew! Not me.
Toshiko Takenouchi in a blurred cameo! Her head looks ginormous, hahaha. It’s nice that she “chewed out” Sora for being missing for three days, but . . . that’s it? She just let her 11-year-old daughter go out again the very next day - after disappearing for three? I don’t know, reboot, that's . . . lame.
The whole “three days missing” thing is something the writers should have really thought more about. It’s just not realistic that their parents wouldn’t be calling the police and panicking like crazy over their disappearance - especially during a power outage/utter chaos. I give a lot of passes for kids’ shows, but the more it’s brought up, the more it just seems really silly.
Sora: “Koushirou-kun, were you OK?” Koushirou: “What? Well . . . My house is, um . . .” Well, I’m intrigued in his backstory! (Also, Sora’s face when she waits for Koushirou’s answer is SO CUTE. The warmth of this girl is amazing.)
I’m not sure why Koushirou felt the need for them to move when other people were around? Tentomon could easily be someone’s Avatar on the internet. Did Toei forget this is 2020? lol
So Tentomon and the others are in the Network, along with some other evil digimon. Interesting.
WereGarurumon riding - and then surfing - on MetalGreymon’s missile was both cool and silly at the same time, haha.
The highlight of the episode for me: Everything Takaishida. Yamato reaching out for Takeru and, just, every single shot of these brothers. Yes, I barely know Takeru, but I could feel Yamato’s desperation for him and it worked for me. LOOK AT TAKERU’S TINY HAND REACHING FOR YAMATO’S LARGER ONE. <3
Although, when Yamato finally pulled Takeru out, I did think he might’ve flung him too far, LOL. (Yamato benches, bro.) But then Takeru fell into his big brother’s loving arms and OMFG THIS MOMENT WAS SO PRECIOUS, IF YOU FELT NOTHING YOU ARE COMPLETELY DEAD INSIDE BELLA. Possibly my favourite moment of the entire reboot so far. <3
When they were falling from the sky they were basically playing catch with each other and I lol’ed.
In this episode we learned that Takeru’s vocabulary only consists of “onii-chan” and “stop it!”.
OH MY, TAKERU WISHED FOR A WHOLE ANGEL. :D A good-looking one, too. But Angemon’s voice does not suit him, lol. Looks like a prince, croaks like a frog. Dude went from a 10 to a 4 real fast. XD;
Angemon gave his power to WereGarurumon and MetalGreymon to defeat Velgrmon - and then died? This angel is super weak, Takeru, get a refund. :P
YOU HAD ONE JOB, TAKERU, ONE JOB - CATCH THE DAMN DIGI-EGG! orz
The fact that Takeru just met Angemon makes his “death” less impactful than in the OG. But that’s OK, it’s not like kids watching the show know that. So it worked fine . . . for now. I guess Takeru won’t have this trauma hanging over him like in 02 where they suddenly pulled it out in an attempt to give his character depth. :P
Overall, I liked this episode.
I think the Angemon plot could’ve been done better (it seems like in an effort to subvert OG expectations, they neutered themselves), but we’ll see where they end up taking it. I thought for sure Devimon vs. Angemon would go down . . . but now that Angemon is in the process of being “reborn”, I doubt he’d be reborn a second time after defeating Devimon.
Then again, the reboot has definitely repeated things before *cough* Omegamon *cough* so I guess Angemon could die again! :P
Could you do Taishiro hcs please?
I certainly can! And I’m so sorry I made you wait in favor of the Adventure/Reboot crossover >.< SO I SHALL MAKE IT UP TO YOU WITH THE FLIRTING HEADCANONS LATER
I realized while looking for some of my other ship-related posts that I hadn’t formatted the Takari headcanons like my others ;-; what a shame--BUT I SHALL CONTINUE IT THUSLY
Taishiro Headcanons (Tai/Izzy)
Friendsy Friends
Okay, if there’s ANYTHING I love about the Reboot it’s that it’s shown the BFF potential of these two
Tai never has ANY idea what Izzy is talking about, but he nods along anyway because that’s the nice thing to do
Until Izzy says “Would you like me to repeat that” and Tai says “Oh yes in Japanese this time please”
As they get older, they start to have a bantering streak that’s actually really fantastic and it amazes the others like nothing else
Sleepovers all the time, you can bet
LET. THEM. PAINT. EACH OTHER’S. NAILS.
More Than Friends
Listen I love Tai and will scream forever about how much I love him... but he’s a dumbass
So obviously it was Izzy who realized OwO “I like this mans” first
It was probably sometime in junior high, especially since Adventure 01 was the time when Izzy was fully realizing how emotions worked (thanks again, Tentomon, you’re the best)
But of course, what the hell does one do when you’re in love with a veritable idiot?
Why, you ask his sister, of course
But Kari didn’t know what to do either
So, Plan B: never tell him
Now, Tai was going through the motions of being rivals-slash-best-buds with Matt, and Tai was saying something about how rad Izzy is, and Matt went “so ask him out”
“wut”
“you like him, don’t you?”
Cue Tai’s hair frizzing more than it already does
“OH MY GOD I LIKE HIM”
He tries so many times to ask Izzy out
But it always ends with a pie in the face... for... some reason
Izzy is not picking up what Tai is putting down
Finally, Tai has to resort to... the Tennessee line
“Hey Izzy, are you from Tennessee?”
“Uh, no, you already knew that--”
“Cuz you’re the only 10 I see!”
Silence
Tentomon appears out of nowhere to say “HE’S ASKING YOU OUT”
And then they’re both blushing and it’s really really funny and cute but mostly funny
The rest of the DigiDestined crash their first date and Izzy’s a blushing mess while Tai is just proud of himself for asking him out
Until Matt points out that technically Tentomon did the work
Shut up, Matt
They don’t hold hands in public or anything, and on the outside it’s almost like they’re not together
But sometimes you can see Izzy falling asleep on Tai’s shoulder, and you just KNOW that they’re happy uwu
-------
I’m not crying or anything, I swear.
Digimon Adventure tri. ~ Character Songs + Analysis
I think too much. This is just the danger of being a Creative Writing major and a great lover of anime/fiction in general.
But I feel it is my duty to get purposely in too deep and get into the nitty-gritty of the character songs produced during the Tri era.
Because, when you think about it? There’s A LOT in them.
I ended up writing a lot, so all analyses are under the cut.
Like all of these songs, Tai’s song is incredibly in-character for him. His song speaks of the adventure he’s found himself on ever since that fateful encounter years ago. His song doesn’t necessarily mention Agumon explicitly, except for one key line:
“I can go anywhere with you.”
Tai has always been constantly moving forward, even when reflecting on the past. Sometimes he doesn’t even think about where he’s going (”You don’t have to know where you’re going”), due to his impulsive nature, but in his eyes, going forward is the key to making it to tomorrow. (I know it’s cheesy. This is Digimon.) I’d like to think that despite his internal struggle throughout Tri, this song represents everything he learns by the end of it all.
I give Tai a lot of tough love about his impulsivity, but this song showcases the positive side to Tai’s almost consistent “let’s go and think about it later.” There’s nothing wrong with going into something without a plan, or without a lick of common sense, so long as the adventure turns out good in the end. (Didja catch that reference to “Butter-fly”?) Although the DigiDestined have gone through a lot, and being impulsive has sometimes turned out bad, the real adventure is spending time with those you care about. In Tai’s case, this means going and “adventuring” with Agumon. He’ll probably get lost along the way, but that’s the fun of it all! After all, the DigiDestined were lost the first time they went to the Digital World, but look at all they accomplished!
Life is a bit of an Eternal Puzzle, but going forward will get you to tomorrow. I don’t know about you all, but I’d follow Tai on his adventures!
Yamato/Matt ; Boku ni Totte
A good number of these songs directly match up with their human/Digimon partner’s, so naturally Matt’s would be the first to do so.
We may not always see it through Matt’s tough exterior (that he rarely lets down even as the years go by), but he has a great capacity for love in his heart. Gabumon is one of two characters we see him express this affection for (the other being T.K.) directly, and this song is entirely dedicated to his Digimon partner.
Multiple times throughout the various installments of Adventure, Matt finds himself separated from Gabumon. Hence the repeated “Don’t say goodbye” with the very clearly pained tone.
I think my favorite line would be this one: “You laughed a little when I said I wanted to become stronger and to protect you / But I thought it was still okay”. The beautiful thing about the human/Digimon bond is that one will always want to protect the other, even though one may be more capable of doing so. Matt’s desire to protect Gabumon most certainly stems from his protectiveness over T.K., but that doesn’t make it any less real.
Matt has a very intense love for Gabumon; his Digimon partner will always be close to his heart and soul. The “I need you” at the end of the song says it all. And it probably explains why this is the song I listen to most out of all of these.
Sora ; Yume no Kanau Basho
Sora’s had her moments of doubt and fear. Of course she has. But let’s not forget that for the most part, she remains optimistic and supportive with everyone in the group.
This song is about missing her Digimon, but it’s so optimistic about seeing her again, it’s hard to remember the pain involved.
The verses of the song seem to linger on good memories with Biyomon (”You stayed by my side when I felt hurt”) while the chorus discusses Sora’s desire to find the Digital World and meet up with Biyomon again (”No matter how far the future is / You and I are connected now”).
One of the most beautiful parts of the song is the verse before the second chorus.
“‘I’m sorry’ for how I’ve changed I wish you would always stay the same ‘Thank you’ with all of my heart I want to send you all of these feelings”
Sora changes a lot over the series, and lots of things change around her. The one constant, however, has been her love for Biyomon. These two are close in a way that the other partners aren’t, and that’s what I love about the series. No human/Digimon relationship is the same, although the forms of love are. The great thing about Sora and Biyomon is that we get to see in action what the others have emotionally/mentally. And that’s pretty much summed up in these two lines (which are my favorite in this song):
“If I could make only one wish It would be to stay with you from now on”
Koshiro/Izzy ; Kioku no Kakera -Koshiro Side-
We all know it; Izzy has never been the most in touch with his emotions. Hell, he can barely handle his crush on Mimi during Tri without turning into a mess. When he does get his emotions together, though, it’s usually because of Tentomon in some way, shape, or form.
Although Izzy’s song is not expressly about the Adventure as a whole or Tentomon entirely, we do see a bit of insight into how Izzy truly saw his connection with Digimon affairs. He reflects on the first time he met Tentomon (”Your body was small / When I met you”) and even ponders the future (”The future we spoke of making has disappeared”). What remains is him struggling to put to words how he feels about all of this.
“I don’t know why I am crying”
This line is pretty self-explanatory. Izzy will probably always struggle to completely connect reality with his emotions, but because he learned to love Tentomon, he’s also learned to love others and he’s slowly getting there. I love our boy genius to death. Even if emotions don’t make sense, what he does understand are connections, hence, “Always, With you, I always want to stay connected with you”
I must also point out this line:  “When walls are closing in, you encourage me/ ‘That’s right’ ‘tell me more’ ‘try again’, over and over again”. In a world that didn’t understand how Izzy could be so embroiled in technology, Tentomon was always the one to encourage him, and for that, Izzy will always be grateful.
God, I love these two.
Mimi ; Go My Way
The very tone of this song is so Mimi, it’s almost painful.
It’s hard to tell who exactly Mimi is addressing in this song: the gang? Palmon? Meiko? Who can really say? Perhaps it’s all of them at once. Although it’s hard to tell, this song has very much the same feeling as Tai’s. There’s a very upbeat feeling to it, one about moving forward even when times are tough.
Mimi’s always struggled to handle the heavier parts of Digital affairs; she’s not a “heavy” person by nature. She kinda reveals this in-song (”I don’t know and I want to give up” ; “Don’t tell me that I don’t understand”), though. Her Crest, Sincerity (or Purity, but Sincerity’s always made more sense to me ANYWAY-), has helped her overcome this struggle bit by bit. You can see that in these lines:
“I want someone to live for” “I want to live by moving forward one step at a time without fear”
What I love about Mimi is that even though, on the surface, she keeps the superficiality, we know that she has always been in the process of becoming more genuine with others. She is the star of her own life, sure, but she knows she can’t do things alone. Now, she’s capable of apologizing for her own actions (”I’m so sorry for hurting you”), expressing love for those important to her (”I’m so glad to have met you”), and even accepting her own shortcomings (”Whether or not I realize how much of a miracle it is”). She’s grown a lot, and thanks to the reboot, we get to see her grow even more.
Jou/Joe ; I can’t
How much can I scream at one character?
Joe will always be the pessimist. There’s really no way he can’t be. He’ll always be the one to put other things before Digital World affairs, and that’s okay. He has priorities, just like we all do. Sometimes, I prioritize anime over sleep, and THAT’S OKAY TOO (unhealthy as it is).
We don’t necessarily see it in the series (even in Tri, it’s not expanded upon too heavily), but Joe does feel an incredible amount of guilt for not being there with the others on a constant basis. “Why can’t I just make up my mind?” ; “I wish I could make an excuse and pass like always / I feel like you will leave if I do…” ; “I’m not confident enough to do anything” are just a few lines that express his guilt/struggle with himself over this “abandonment” of his friends.
However, Joe does want to change. We see that clear as day in Tri and even in this song: “I sincerely want the strength to protect you too”. Gomamon is hella different from Joe, but that doesn’t stop them from loving each other. Gomamon will always be the one to bring him back, whether he wants him to or not. That is the power of the Joe/Gomamon team. Joe may not have faith in himself, but he’ll always have faith in Gomamon, and Gomamon will always feel the same about Joe.
“I don’t look back on the past I want us to keep living together like before I’m so glad to have met you I think I can be someone who speaks his heart I can’t help thinking of you all the time…”
Maybe Joe can fail the others, but he can never truly fail Gomamon.
Takeru/T.K. ; Kibou no Tsubasa
When did T.K. become this cutie pie with the fedora? WHEN. (I know when, don’t mind me.)
Similar to Sora, T.K. has always tried to be optimistic about things. But similar to Mimi, his comes out in this very idol-ish way.
This song is most definitely for Patamon, who has always been the cutest Digimon (to me, at least). T.K. and Patamon have always been close, and Patamon will always be incredibly important to him (”What is important to me is right here / Your smiling face here with me; I love you”). Ever since Devimon, T.K.’s protective streak with Patamon has been intense. We see that in 02, and we see it in Tri when Patamon gets Infected.
“I want to protect you forever and ever I wish I could capture your innocence I want to evolve from when I was a crybaby”
Even when T.K. grows up and knows that Patamon is technically the one to protect him, he wants to protect him. The T.K./Patamon dynamic is incredible in ways I can’t talk about without crying. They’re so fantastic, and the love they have for each other is beautiful to behold. No wonder T.K. says,
“I won’t lose you ever again”
Hikari/Kari ; Ring
Everything about Kari has always been hard for me to understand, and this song is no exception. (She has such a complex role, like damn.)
Like the others, this song is a message to her Digimon, but it’s a little less sentimental than we would normally expect from Kari. I think, for the most part, she reflects on her role as a DigiDestined and her dreams for peace between Digimon and humans. However, there is also her expressing how much she loves Gatomon: “My heart fears losing you as I wait for tomorrow.”
Kari’s always had a bit of an old soul. Even when she’s made of pure innocence, a part of her has always accepted the hard facts of life with grace. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t dwell too much on her fear of losing Gatomon. Obviously, she was completely shattered when it happened in Tri (indirectly), but that was probably because of the method by which it happened and her role in it.
I think the most powerful part of the song lies near the end, mostly because of its direct reference to Tri itself:
“Even if you have forgotten everything A sense of nostalgia will find you”
Kari will not be the last to reference the Digimon losing their memories, but the fact that she so casually brings up the hopefulness she felt in having Gatomon remember her again is so powerful. It speaks to the bond every pair of Digimon and humans have. And that is exactly what Kari’s always around for: demonstrating that bond.
Meiko ; Mebaeta Tsuyosa
Meiko’s song gives us the Meicoomon narrative in music format, and I actually really like it. This song speaks of the bond these two felt and how difficult Meiko finds it that her beloved partner has such an antagonistic role. It’s not the most positive of songs, but it does speak to the “I’d do anything for you” type of bond we see in just about every pair in this series.
“I felt like I knew everything about you, But the reality I knew has collapsed now”
Meiko had no way of knowing things would turn out the way they did, but she still felt an incredible guilt for something she did not cause at all. Though Meicoomon causes her plenty of pain (”You’ve given me courage, but also darkness”), Meiko cannot simply let go of the bond they have (”It will always be you and me / No matter what fate we are given”). In a way, it’s like a reverse Ken/Wormmon type of relationship.
It’s really too bad Meiko gets the flack she does for her role in this series. I found something rather relatable in her, and I liked her dynamic with Mimi especially. Her bond with Meicoomon is one that the rest of the DigiDestined related to, and that was why they wanted to help her. The bond between the two Mei’s isn’t something to sneeze at; it’s quite beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. This song puts that bond into more perspective.
“I’m sure the bond between us will never change Only I can quietly tell you that now forever”
Digimon Compilation
Agumon ; Agumon SUNba
There is absolutely nothing sentimental about this song and it remains perfect in every way.
Agumon! The ever hungry dinosaur! What better song for him to have than one where he talks about how hungry he is!
I love this song for how purely Agumon it is. We see how Tai has to deal with how hungry his partner is, while also seeing a sillier side to the little dinosaur that I, for one, love to joke about.
Not everything in Digimon needs to have a heavier undertone, and Agumon here just proves it.
Gabumon ; Kimi ni Totte
We see a lot of Matt’s perspective on things, but sometimes, we don’t hear enough of Gabumon. Personally, I think this song gives us all the perspective we need on the Gabu/Matt front. Like damn.
Gabumon has seen a lot of sides to Matt. He is witness to a lot of Matt’s softer and gentler moments, which is always fantastic to see. Although Matt without his harder outer shell wouldn’t be Matt, there’s a part of Gabumon that hopes he continues being gentle and kind in his own little way (”I want your gentle sound to continue, always”).
What I like about this song is that’s it’s a direct response to Matt’s “Don’t say goodbye” - he directly says “This is not goodbye,” which I’m sure Gabumon knows is the exact phrase Matt is looking for. Matt wants to know that Gabumon won’t leave him, and Gabumon makes sure to tell him that that will never happen.
Matt will always try to keep to himself, even though he trusts Gabumon (”Though you wouldn’t tell me how lonely you were”). Gabumon sees this, and while he accepts it, he wants Matt to know that they’re still a team (”I want to be able to run anywhere you will let me”).
Like Kari, Gabumon makes a very blatant reference to the memory loss that still makes me cry a bit:
“If you ever happen to forget everything about me I promise I will meet you again”
OKAY, GABUMON. MAKE ME CRY. IT’S FINE.
Gabumon has always been a calming force, but it’s nice to see him exhibit such strong emotions in regards to his partner. We know he has them, but it’s nice nonetheless. And of course he says “I need you” at the end of the song, which is the same thing Matt said. Even though they express their emotions differently, Matt and Gabumon have such an intense connection to each other, and they acknowledge without pause how much they need each other in their lives. They are a powerful force, even in music.
Piyomon/Biyomon ; Heart wo Sagase
Am I surprised that both Sora and Biyomon make reference to the sky and rainbows in their songs? Of course not. That’s just their way.
Both songs relay a search for “something,” whether it’s the “land of dreams” or “the heart”. Biyomon has a lot less sentimentality, but then, Biyomon has never been one to dwell on the sad side of their relationship. She’s always been a little more positive than even Sora, and we see that here.
Still, Biyomon does mention their connection (”Let’s hold hands to stick together”), and, in general, it’s a sweet song that embodies Biyomon’s heart. Which explains a lot, since the song is called “Search for the Heart.”
I don’t have much to say about this song, but I will admit, at first hear, I thought it was Sora singing and not Biyomon. Very interesting.
Tentomon ; Kioku no Kakera -Tentomon Side-
What I love about this song is that Tentomon isn’t really singing in the traditional sense. But then, he doesn’t need to.
This entire song is dedicated to Izzy. It tells us just how concerned Tentomon is for Izzy and his hardworking ways. He spends an entire verse telling Izzy to take care of himself, ending it with, “You’re my important partner / It’s natural that I’m worried about you.”
Tentomon has always been more in touch with emotions than Izzy, but he doesn’t fault his partner for it. In fact, it’s what makes them so compatible. He has such faith in Izzy (”Koushiro-han will succeed”), and he doesn’t want Izzy to ever lose faith in himself (”Don’t you see what a great person you are?” ; “It’s no good for you to give up hope”). Their connection truly is special; no wonder I started a side-blog dedicated to Tentomon.
Tentomon is the THIRD character to reference lost memories, which is interesting in an of itself:
“Even if I forget everything I can start over again from the beginning”
I’ve noticed when the Digimon discuss this, they’re very optimistic about their connection with their partner. Kari, meanwhile, was a bit neutral on the topic but still somewhat positive. Very interesting.
Palmon ; Blooming your Heart
Palmon does not directly address Mimi like Tentomon addresses Izzy, but the message remains the same.
Palmon and Mimi’s relationship has always been tinged with more sweetness than the others’, in my eyes. They exist to make each other smile and grow stronger in heart. (”I’ll make you smile more and more, whoa~”) I especially love how Palmon mentions Mimi’s famous hat: “And that ten-gallon hat forever, my heart with you”
Still, there is the presence of comfort between these two. Palmon will always be there for Mimi (”If your pain won’t wither and pain blooms, I’ll be by your side“) and will always treasure her, no matter what. It’s the same for the other Digimon, for sure, but Palmon’s love for Mimi is, somehow, more pure than the others, and that’s what’s lovely about it.
“Because you are my world, my best garden”
Gomamon ; You can
Like Gabumon’s, Gomamon’s song is a direct response to Joe.
Gomamon has always known how different he and Joe are (”We may fight, but we laugh a lot too”), and in some ways, their relationship is rougher than the others - when they argue, it lasts longer than the others’ arguments with their partners. Yet despite all this, Gomamon understands Joe in a way I don’t think even Joe does. (”But I understand you / You have to go your own way”) Gomamon accepts Joe for who he is; a prime example is this verse here:
“I think that’s just the way you are You have a gentle presence But you only show it to me I don’t mind it being that way”
Even though he understands and loves Joe, Gomamon still expresses frustration at Joe’s hesitance when it comes to involving himself in the various Adventures (”You can, so when are you going to stand up?”). Gomamon knows for a fact Joe can do anything he sets his mind to, but anxiety always holds him back. And therein lies the most important line of the song:
“But I don’t want you to forget that you are not alone”
Gomamon knows he can; Joe says he can’t. In some ways, both are right. But I think Gomamon will always be right to push Joe to step outside and face those fears of his.
Patamon ; Daisuki-ism
This is the absolute cutest song ever. This one and Agumon’s have my heart wrapped around their notes.
I don’t have much to say about this song either, as it’s pretty direct. Patamon loves T.K. a whole damn lot, and this song is such a sweet song dedicated to their relationship.
T.K.’s lucky to have Patamon. He so genuinely loves his partner that he’s not afraid to say it, and he’s not afraid to protect him, no matter the cost.
“When you’re happy you show it with your cheeks You always make me smile Every time you hold me I won’t forget that wonderful feeling”
Tailmon/Gatomon ; Together as one
Gatomon has always been more quietly sentimental about her relationship with Kari, and this song is no different.
Because of the nature of their meeting, Gatomon loves Kari in a very gentle way. They met under trying circumstances, and Kari gave her a love she wasn’t used to. Yet together, they lost someone important (Wizardmon), and from then on, they seemed almost closer than a lot of the other partner pairs.
In fact, unless I’m mistaken, Gatomon makes a reference to Wizardmon in the song: “I miss holding hands with my beloved friend”. This could, of course, be a reference to Kari, but I’d like to think that Gatomon never has Wizardmon far from her mind.
In any case, Gatomon’s song is sentimental in a way Kari’s isn’t, and it’s a nice balance between the two. There’s direct reference to a “light,” which surely means Kari’s Crest (”I can believe in the light” ; “I believe the light will guide us towards a bright future”). Gatomon also mentions a “warmth,” which she feels when she’s around Kari, which makes sense, since Myotismon never gave her any such warmth.
Kari’s song mentions nostalgia; I think, in some ways, she was referring to Gatomon. This song has a very nostalgic feel to it, especially in the last line:
“Let’s go back to the time where we can smile together again”
I think sometimes even Gatomon forgets that she is capable of very strong sentimentality and nostalgia. It’s very nice to see in a show like Digimon.
Meicoomon ; Ura-omote Crossroad
I think what we often forget is how much pain Meicoomon was in throughout Tri. She didn’t want to cause all the trouble and pain that she did; she was not in control. This song gives us insight into her hopelessness and how Meiko was the only thing that could really lead her back to a Digimon version of sanity.
Meiko deeply loved Meicoomon, and Meicoomon felt exactly the same way. They’re a very sweet duo, and while their existence in general is a topic of debate in the Digimon fandom, I think it was very interesting to see. Considering all the original eight were wholly good, and so were their partners (you know, despite past hiccups), it was nice to see one of them purposely being an antagonist in spite of their partner’s alignment.
Anyway. In this song, we see Meicoomon’s struggle to stay true to herself and her relationship with Meiko (”I can’t escape them, but I don’t want to lose you / I can’t separate the light from shadow”) as well as her own inner turmoil with everything happening to her (”What should I do if I’m left here all alone?”).
The true point of this song is that Meicoomon was lost and looking for Meiko during the entirety of Tri. She wanted nothing more than to find her way back to her, but of course, that wasn’t up to her. Meicoomon desires nothing more than to be with Meiko, but those of us who have seen Tri know that she doesn’t get to see that through. Still, she can’t help but say:
“Let’s keep smiling forever”
Tri always gave me a lot of feels, but somehow, Meicoomon gives me more of them than I ever think at first glance. So kudos to Meicoomon for being one of those characters that frustrates me as well as makes me cry.
-------
So this turned out longer than expected, but there it is. Some of these are more tangent-y than I meant, but that’s the way I analyze, I guess. At least I’ve got my thinking cap on, right...?
I highly recommend both “compilations”! I personally listen to “Boku ni Totte”, “Kimi ni Totte”, and “Kibou no Tsubasa” a lot, but I’ve been listening to “Yume no Kanau Basho” a lot lately. “Agumon SUNba” and “Daisuki-ism” are, of course, classics, but the rest are gems in their own right as well!
While Koushiro swam his way through the zero gravity air-space, Vadermon chased after {Koushiro} with the zigzag motions of a UFO, shooting at {Koushiro} at every chance.
The rings of light were more powerful than they looked. The stars that took on a direct hit from them burst into smithereens. "Just how do we beat Vadermon?" {Koushiro}'s inquisitive heart back where it belonged, it did not take long getting down to work within Koushiro. Calming himself, {Koushiro} analyzed the situation. {Koushiro}'s Digimon partner Tentomon was currently in the form of Babumon, who didn't have much fighting power. {Tentomon} would have to evolve. But how? What was evolution anyway? What are Digimon? What are the Chosen Children? "I want to know! I want to know! I want to know!" Koushiro shouted. A single star above {Koushiro}'s head glittered. The star changed into a shape Koushiro had once seen before, flying like a comet into Koushiro's hand. It was a Crest.
Reboot Koushiro vs Original Koushiro
Little thought about Kou-chan below the cut, Reboot ep 5 spoiler.
So...  2020 Koushiro can already say emotional things like, “Maybe I was sent here to meet you,” to Kabuterimon.  He can’t repeat it when (teasingly?) asked, but he can say it, freely, of his own will.
Adventure Koushiro bowed and formally thanked Tentomon for taking care of him after a 50+ ep adventure- that was as emotional as he was comfortable being, and Tentomon accepted that.
I can’t help but be curious about how Reboot Koushiro will grow!  He already seems... potentially “ahead” of original Koushiro from the final episode of Digimon Adventure, at least in terms of one of his major character/development areas.
I’m so curious about what they’re going to do with character arcs...!
This fic takes place in the universe of Digimon Adventure Psi (or Digimon Adventure 2020) and shows how Koushiro met Tentomon. I'm using my hc that Koushiro was a bit old when his biological parents died.
Alone in the world
Koushiro recognized that landscape immediately. He had seen those colorful forms and sparks when he first had contact with the network space, back when Taichi had gone there for the first time. However, the older boy was nowhere nearby. Koushiro found himself alone in that world.
“Taichi-san!” Koushiro called, wandering through that strange place. A cold wind sent chills down his neck. “Taichi-san, where are you?” he insisted, getting increasingly desperate. “Please, answer me! Taichi-san!”
Was he really alone there?
A sensation he had tried to bury for years was reemerging. Once again he could hear, in the back of his mind, the whispers from those people, who were too sure a grieving child couldn't listen to them during his parents' ceremony.
“That poor helpless kid!”
“It's so sad!”
“He has no family anymore.”
“He's all alone now.”
“Alone in the world.”
Koushiro was surprised when he saw the teardrops falling on his tablet. He was clutching the object against his chest, as if afraid of losing it. The boy knew he had done that many times before. Maybe that was a silly fear, but it was still overwhelming. It probably lingered from that great loss he once suffered.
He wiped his tears with the back of a hand and faced forward. Koushiro wasn't a helpless child. Taichi had told him that he had been helpful, that he had been useful. He had to believe in his friend's words. Koushiro just needed to keep his calm and think. There had to be something he could do.
“It's going to be alright,” the boy told himself.
“Of course it is! Don't worry!” a voice suddenly said behind him, startling the child.
Koushiro turned around quickly and saw a huge ladybug hovering a couple of meters away from him. The insect was staring at the child.
“Hi, there! I'm Tentomon!” the monster greeted. “I saw you and thought you were lost. So, I'm here to help!”
“Tentomon...?” Koushiro repeated that name in low voice, studying the other. “Are you a digimon...?”
“Yes, of course I am!” Tentomon confirmed. “What are you? You don't look like a digimon.”
“I'm a human being, I came from a different world. My name is Izumi Koushiro, nice to meet you!” Koushiro introduced himself, bowing slightly.
“Izumi Koushiro-han...” Tentomon said, “Izumi-han... Koushiro-han! That's it! Koushiro-han sounds better! I'm going to call you that!”
The boy was about to say that the digimon didn't need to address him with a honorific, but a question made its way to his lips before he could think it through:
“Is that Kansai dialect?”
“What is Kansai, Koushiro-han?”
“Ehr... never mind that...” the boy muttered, trying to come up with a theory for the monster to talk like that without ever being in Japan. Then, another concern rose in his mind, which led him to begin to ask:
“Excuse me, uhm... Tentomon-san...? Have you seen-”
“I don't like the sound of that at all!” Tentomon interrupted. “Don't call me with 'san,' please!”
“S-Sorry!” Koushiro hurried to say. “If you don't like 'san'... should I call you 'Tentomon-kun,' then?”
“That sounds even worse!” Tentomon complained. “Just call me by my name alone.”
Koushiro felt blood rushing to his face. When talking to someone, he always used a honorific. To drop it, especially with someone he had just met, felt too audacious for him. However, he couldn't insist on using honorifics if doing that upset the other.
“If that's what you want, then I'll respect your wishes, Tentomon,” Koushiro said in low voice. Hopefully, he would soon get used to calling him that and stop feeling awkward about the lack of honorific.
“Thank you, Koushiro-han!” Tentomon exclaimed.
“You don't have to use honorifics with me,” Koushiro told him.
“But I really want to call you 'Koushiro-han,' and you said you would respect my wishes!” Tentomon contested.
Koushiro thought that he couldn't argue with that kind of logic. The boy felt it was unfair that he had to drop honorifics while Tentomon wasn't willing to do it, but decided that it was best to let that slide.
“So, Koushiro-han, you were looking for someone, right?” Tentomon asked.
“Yes! I'm looking for another human being!” Koushiro confirmed. “His name is Yagami Taichi-san. He's taller than me and has big brown hair. Have you seen him?”
“I haven't seen anyone around, besides you,” Tentomon told him. “I could help you to look for him. This Taichi-han is older than you, right?”
“Yes, how did you know?” the boy asked.
“It was just wishful thinking, actually,” Tentomon said. “I was worried when I saw a little kid like you all alone, so I hoped that there was someone out there to take care of you.”
“T-That's not...” Koushiro mumbled, shaking with embarrassment. “Taichi-san doesn't take care of me!”
“Does he treat you badly?” Tentomon had a worried voice.
“No, of course not!” Koushiro denied. “He's a wonderful person! Taichi-san is kind and encouraging! The way he smiles at you... and his way of talking that makes you feel...”
the boy lost himself in his memories of his friend and had to be taken back to reality by Tentomon.
“He sounds like a good friend who takes care of you!” the digimon exclaimed.
“I-It's not like that! I mean, Taichi-san has done a lot for me and many other people... he does amazing things... but I helped him too, he told me that I helped him! I got to be useful... I wasn't just...”
Fragments from his past echoed in his mind. He remembered the day he had met Mr. And Mrs. Izumi. Back then, how fiercely was he clutching that tablet against his chest?
“You don't have to be scared, Koushiro. You don't need to worry about anything.”
“We will take care of you now.”
Koushiro felt his eyes getting warm as those memories returned, but refused to cry. Crying had never helped him, it had never returned anything he had lost. It would be just bothersome for other people if he were to cry in front of them.
“Then, you take care of each other! That's how friends should be!” Tentomon said, excitedly.
Koushiro was taken aback by that statement, but wasn't bothered by it. The idea that he was capable of doing something for the sake of others filled his heart with joy.
“Say, Koushiro-han, what's that thing that you're holding?” Tentomon asked, pointing to the tablet that Koushiro had in his arms.
“It's a tablet that I can also use as a computer,” Koushiro explained. “I use it to analyze data and it helps me to communicate...”
Only then the boy realized that he could've contacted Taichi a long time ago and felt like the dumbest person alive.
“I... I can actually talk to Taichi-san and ask where he is...” Koushiro muttered, embarrassed, “I had forgotten about it...”
“You can talk to him? That's great!” Tentomon sounded excited. “After you talk to him, I can take you to where your friend is.”
“You don't have to go through that much trouble because of me,” Koushiro tried to dissuade the digimon. He didn't know how far away Taichi was or how long it would take to find him. It wasn't fair to inconvenience Tentomon that way.
“Don't worry, it's not like I have anything better to do, anyway!” Tentomon assured him. “Besides, I like talking to you. It's going to be a fun trip because I enjoy your company!”
“You... enjoy my company...?” Koushiro asked, in disbelief. The boy tried to remember if anyone had ever said such a thing to him before.
“You sound like a very intelligent person and you're also very polite. You seem to care very much for other people, which I find admirable,” Tentomon told him. “I like you a lot already, Koushiro-han!”
The sensation born from that statement was warmer than what he felt when he was able to be useful to someone. I'm not a bother... I'm not bothering him... Koushiro thought. He couldn't begin to describe the deep happiness that was engulfing him.
Koushiro found a spot to sit and then contacted Taichi. He was surprised to see that Sora from the summer camp was with the other boy, but was glad that his friend wasn't alone.
Then, Koushiro realized that the other kids couldn't be alone because they had digimon with them. He wondered if Tentomon could be to him what Agumon was to Taichi. Koushiro felt that was an audacious thought. Tentomon was probably just a nice digimon willing to help him out of kindness. It wouldn't be the first time he found people like that. However, Koushiro wished that wasn't the case.
Like he had done when he lost his parents, Koushiro wished he didn't have to be alone in that big and strange world.
Dreaming To Reality: Oneiromancy Chapter Twenty Three - 25
“N-nothing?” Taichi repeated, aghast. “Rescuing Hikari isn’t noth-”
Mimi cut off the Chosen of Courage by thrusting a finger in his face before wagging it in a scolding fashion as she clucked her tongue. “Tsk, tsk, Taichi,” she said as she shook her head, still smiling. “It is nothing because Zeed-chama would never hurt Hikari.”
“Zeed-ch-chama?!” Taichi sputtered, his eyes bugging out.
Wallace stared at Mimi in confusion. “What does that mean?”
“[It’s a combination of the cuteness of ‘chan’ and the respect of ‘sama’,]” Mimi explained with a wink and a wag of her finger at Wallace. “Just perfect for someone like Zeed-chama, don’t you think?”
“Brilliant!” Jou said as he snapped his fingers on his right hand. “Just like Lord Zeed!”
Palmon nodded, folding her arms in front of her chest. “Right, right, because Zeed-chama is both cute and should be respected.”
“Can’t argue with that,” Gomamon laughed. “But I think I’ll stick with Lord Zeed anyway. You and Mimi can stick with Zeed-chama.”
“W… what? What!?” Yamato blurted out, his head whipping about as he stared between Mimi, Jou, Palmon, and Gomamon in shock.
“Mimi’s right, Taichi!” Daisuke said as he pumped a fist into the air. V-mon mimicked his every motion, the small dragon Digimon’s fists similarly clenched as his face positively glowed with adoration. “Hikari’s totally safe with Lord Zeed! Perfectly safe! She’s safer with him than she’d ever be literally anywhere else!”
Koshiro shook his head a bit, his expression somewhat dumbfounded. “I can’t believe we were ever worried in the first place. If Lord Zeed thinks Hikari should stay with him, then that’s obviously the best place for her to be.”
“You’re exactly right, Koshiro,” Tentomon agreed as he folded his digits in front of him and nodded sagely. “Lord Zeed knows best. We can’t possibly know better than him.”
Taichi looked back and forth between his friends, sputtering as he tried to recover his mental footing before he could finally blurt something coherent out of his hanging mouth. “Have you guys gone crazy?!”
“What’s gotten into you?” Sora asked, dread pooling into her stomach by the sudden change in her friends’ behavior.
Brief thoughts on every Digimon Adventure 2020 episode
It’s been a while since I wrote a review for Adventure 2020, for lack of time or enthusiasm, so here I’ll go through every episode saying “I like it”, “I don’t like it” or “I’m ambivalent”, along with other brief thoughts.
Breaking it down in short “arcs”, my opinions are as follows:
Character Introductions (1-8): Liked 6, didn’t like 1, was ambivalent about 1.
Perfect evolutions and Nidhoggmon (9-18): Liked 6, didn’t like 3, was ambivalent about 1.
Takeru and Devimon (19-24): Liked 1, didn’t like 1, was ambivalent about 4.
Hikari and DarkKnightmon (25-33): Liked 1, didn’t like 5, was ambivalent about 3.
MoonMillenniummon arc? (34-36 as of now): Didn’t like 1 and was ambivalent about 2.
Overall: I liked 14 episodes, didn’t like 11 episodes and was ambivalent about 11 episodes. The vast, vast majority of the episodes I liked were before the second Omegamon appearence.
Pretty long list below the cut
Tokyo Digital Crisis: I like it. Established Taichi and Koushiro very well, had great fights and ended on a good cliffhanger.
War Game: I like it. Not as much as the first, but the fights were pretty good.
And to the Digital World: I like it. First half was just a remake of Our War Game, but second half was a great showcase of Taichi and Koushiro.
Birdramon Soars: I don’t like it. Sora’s lack of reaction is ridiculous, and the action is terrible.
Holy Digimon: I’m ambivalent. Backstory dump was okay, bond between Koushiro and Tentomon was good, the offscreen escape was ridiculous.
The Targeted Kingdom: I like it. Excelent introduction for Mimi, her personality, background and conflicts, characterization for the rest was great, the situation with the protection against the siege was handled great.
That Boy is Jou Kido: I like it. Not quite as good as Mimi’s episode, but good for basically the same reasons.
The Children’s Attack on the Fortress: I like it. It’s the start of the whole “barrage of attacks that hits nothing” trope for the show, but it’s fun, Yamato’s epiphany was surprisingly well handled.
The Perfect Attacks: I like it. It’s the start of “non-protagonists stand around and do nothing” for this show, but the whole deal with Ogremon and Greymon was great enough for me to not mind it.
The Super Evolution of Steel: I like it. I interpreted it as the synchronicity between Taichi and Agumon being the catalyst for the evolution, and that’s unique enough for the franchise that I enjoyed it. Still had tons of problems though.
The Wolf Standing atop the Desert: I don’t like it. It had Yamato go through the most annoying tropes usually associated with the lone wolf archetype, and the evolution cathalyst was remembering the far more impactful episode 8.
Lilimon Blooms: I like it. As others pointed out, it’s an episode long reference to Castle in the Sky, but I actually liked it better than that movie.
The Crimson Winged Garudamon: I don’t like it. Sora was upstaged by Yamato on her own episode, and Jou was just there to be humiliated.
The Kings of the Insects Clash: I’m ambivalent. There’s enough good stuff here to love it and enough bad stuff to hate it. Pity the lessons Koushiro learned here basically stayed here too.
Zudomon’s Iron Hammer of Lightning: I like it. Jou’s determination to not go back on his word and protect his friends by himself was great, as were his initial attempts at strategy both working and failing because of his lack of experience.
The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo: I like it. Liked the paranoia this evoked.
The Battle in Tokyo Against Orochimon: I like it. It’s the summation of everything that happened before in terms of every single character.
Countdown to Tokyo’s Annihilation: I don’t like it. It was terrible in terms of plot, character and action.
Roar, Juouken: I’m ambivalent. Tons of good stuff here, and all of it relies on incompetent villains and heroes forgetting their power-ups.
The Seventh One Awakens: I like it. Nay, I love it. Best episode in the series, maybe, the culmination of Yamato’s character up to that moment and the first appearence of the Holy Digimon justifying all the hype for them.
The Tide-turning Update: I’m ambivalent. Agumon and Taichi were good, as was the action, but Yamato doing a 180 on his attitude towards Takeru, and Takeru’s extremely convenient rescue of Eldoradimon, dragged this down.
The Unbeatable Blue Sagittarius: I’m ambivalent. Tons of good stuff, but the emotional core of it was Takeru, and he plain didn’t work here.
Meesenger of Darkness, Devimon: I don’t like it. Lame fight scene extended to full episode length.
The Final Stage, Done Devimon: I’m ambivalent. Flashy, but ultimately meaningless.
Dive to the Next Ocean: I don’t like it. Terrible in almost every regard, with the brief scenes of the B-Team being the highlights.
Break Through the Sea Monster Barricade: I don’t like it. The first scene was good and then it spends the episode reiterating its message.
To the New Continent: I don’t like it. Still repeating the same worldbuilding as the previous episode, though at least now everyone is here (for the last time so far).
The Children’s Fight for Survival: I’m ambivalent. Not a whole lot happens but it’s all directed spectacularly (as in, it’s pure spectacle, and I respect that craft).
Escape the Burning Jungle: I’m ambivalent. Some good moments here, but otherwise still reiterating the same “this is a world where the strong eat the weak” bit from 3 episodes ago.
The Ultimate, WarGreymon: I don’t like it. It’s a worse repeat of episode 10.
The New Darkness, Millenniummon: I don’t like it. Lopmon was cool, but everything else was dull.
Soaring Hope: I like it. It finally made Takeru work as a character, explained what Patamon’s deal was and gave us branching evolution lines.
Hikari of Dawn: I’m ambivalent. There’s some good stuff here, but it’s so underwhelming after so much build-up.
Hikari and Tailmon: I’m ambivalent. Fun set-up, but Hikari’s personality change was immersion breaking and I just couldn’t ignore that once again vastly powerful characters (not just the protagonists, but MarinAngemon and Daipenmon) did nothing just so Tailmon got a moment to shine.
The Glowing Angewomon: I’m ambivalent. It’s pretty terrible that the way they decided to make us care about Tailmon accross is via exposition dump of her emotions and issues, and once again her big conversation with Hikari mid-battle was more than a little ridiculous, but it was a compelling concept for their bond, so I’m willing to overlook it.
Operation Satellite Sniper: I don’t like it. It was going well enough (still with problems, but well enough) until the gratuitious BlitzGreymon evolution and not even Koushiro’s info-dump on his feelings (which will most likely be forgotten after this episode again) could fix it.
