But it’s totally okay to pass on it.” She insisted, with a soft smile. “I just like doin’ things for people. Someone told me that means my love language is a weird mix of like acts of service and gift giving. I’m rambling. Sorry.” She blushed when she was nervous.

Hazel posts a TikTok filmed in Steve and Eddie’s bedroom that starts as she says, “So, Pop has basically been moping–”

“I’m not moping,” Steve interrupts from somewhere off camera.

“He’s been moping all day,” Hazel continues, “Because Dad isn’t wearing his ring.”

She flips the camera and zooms in on a ceramic dish on one bedside table to show that it’s currently housing a small pile of rings, including the silver band matching the one Steve is wearing on the ring finger of his left hand.

She pans over to Steve, who’s sitting in bed with his iPad.

“Your dad is a grown man,” he says, not looking at the camera, “If he wants to pretend to be single for a day, that’s totally fine.”

From even further off camera, Eddie can be heard saying, “Alright,” and he appears in the doorway a moment later.

“Enough with the slander. I took my ring off because someone,” he pauses to look pointedly at Steve, “conned me into doing yard work with him this weekend and there was so much dirt under there it could’ve grown its own weeds.”

The TikTok cuts to Steve saying, “Hey, no judgment from me. If you want the world to think you're available to see what happens, more power to you. I personally don't get it, but–”

“Oh my god.”

The video cuts again to Eddie putting the ring back on.

“Happy now, princess?” he asks.

Hazel pans the camera back over to Steve in time to catch a smug nod.

Later, when both the camera and Hazel are gone, Eddie says, “I really don’t know what you’re worried about, man.”

“Uh, do you really not have any idea how good-looking you are?” Steve replies, “I’m not worried about you. I’m worried about everyone else.”

“Steve, when I see someone as old as us who is both hot and not wearing a ring, my first thought is to wonder what’s wrong with them.”

oof all this talk about hazel and the great depression is really making me wonder what her relationship with money ends up being later in life. i remember the phrase "...settled the tab with a ruby" VERBATIM from the books in the hazel chapter explaining her curse and like... when diamonds pop up like daisies but you have to spend them like common coin. when you see how twisted up people can get about money when you see how life chews them up and spits them out when they run out. i can see her not wanting anything to do with her finances bc maladaptive avoidance is kinda up her alley, but is she a penny pincher with half a dozen cash stashes squirreled away? or is she a big spender because inflation is so dizzyingly different and spending five dollars was always just as much stress as spending fifty anyway so she just refuses to think about it. does she cringe away from bank statements and hoard old bills even though they stress her out just in case they need to be referenced or contested? (...not to project or anything). from depression era new orleans to alaska to a footsoldier of the fifth cohort to the highest earner in the army- all in 21st century california. OVER THE COURSE OF THREE YEARS. or do you think all this and also her pluto powers kick in and she really does NOT gaf about money in the slightest. doesnt look at it doesnt think about it and doesnt need to bc she's got that sweet sweet praetor pension now in addition to her heritage just giving her a good sense of true worth relative to price?

ooooooh i love this question. them having to significantly undercharge for what those gems were worth was fascinating to me. and the economy was fucked so it makes sense! i've seen headcanons that hazel would naturally be good at finances because of her powers, and i actually agree, but i also agree with you that maladaptive avoidance is her thing. i think she's going to have trouble spending or being ambitious with her money/career, partly because of the way she was raised in the depression - she probably has trouble wasting anything and has disaster plans in the back of her mind - but also i think that because of her relationship with her mother, she's afraid to really want things. which doesn't just extend to money, you can see her holding back in her interpersonal relationships as well even as she learns to take initiative what she wants. in her adult life that wouldn't necessarily manifest in actively running away like nico or leo, but i think the worst version of herself, the one we see in her past, is the one that lets inertia carry her. but then, on the other hand, all the bravery and resilience she's capable of isn't going to change the fundamental realities of either her old or new life. so to answer your question, i think its a combination of what you said at the end - she'll try not to think about it but also will still always be thinking about it in the back of her mind.

also your question is now making me wonder if new rome pays them for doing all that lmfao. now i'm overthinking that too.

Amazing how one can so blindly miss one of the main points of the tsats and then write their own version of the book thinking it’s better. Sure, fuck Bianca and not letting Jason rest peacefully, and fuck the whole meaning of the book because you don’t like Will and your dislike for him clouded your judgement. Lol

Lol, mark oshiro wrote 99% of this book (so it’s pretty much a fanfic anyway 😭😂) so me writing an alternate version isn’t hurting anything, especially since so many people liked my take.

And the thing is: i was a Solangelo shipper before this book was out. Like hardcore.

Even if Will had been an oblivious jerk to Nico in BOO and gaslighted him into thinking no one at camp treated him the way he was treated and that ‘everything was in his head’ and that all he needed to do to be happy was ‘get out of his brooding cloud’.

Yes even after that I still thought they would make Will a better character lol. (I’m not being sarcastic either).

So the thing is, I went into this book with a very open mind. I went into this book with hope about Will solaces character development and whatnot.

If you happened to read my tsats book review since you looked over my alternate au post, then you will definitely see the things that either did not make any sense according to canon or characterization. And I’m not talking about the version of the characters ‘in my head’ I’m talking about ACTUAL CANON DEPICTIONS AND CANON EVENTS.

I’m not saying fuck Bianca, or fuck Jason lol 😂

I’m saying there were so many inconsistencies with previous canon and even within this own book that frankly it is just…. Not good. And I was so disappointed bc I believe they could have done much better and also it was very obviously rushed that I simply thought of an alternative story that a lot of people thought was cool.

And as a queer teen myself, I definitely understand that rep is important no doubt, but there was a lot of like… forced rep? You know what I mean? Like in a way that felt almost cheap in a way. And very lecture-like. The amount of noncanon, twitter meme talk, preachy morals and bad writing shoved down my throat was insane.

It exhausted me in a way that had never before happened in a riordan book. So yeah, it’s not all that amazing that one would miss the ‘main points’ of a story when it is so poorly executed.

Anyway, if you wanna talk more on our different views I’m open. I won’t change my mind that this book was just a complete mess but I also understand that people are okay with that lol.

Your mama ain't teaching you manners." he laughs with Lucy before his greeting turns to Hazel, still smiling widely although he knows this little routine. They're passing on their way to the Cross cabins, and with that usually comes a dim of Hazel's light. "Your dad got something fun planned for you?" he doesn't let his bitterness show for Lu's sake, but Everett can't often let things go as he looks back at Hazel. "Maybe she'll come back to us with a scar or two, huh?"

hi anon & 🪴 anon! i am so down to share my linguistics paper! the paper is here and the meme i wrote it about is here.

i wrote it for a senior & masters level linguistics special topics seminar on world & internet englishes in late 2018! that wasn't my major, i had to get the prerequisites waived to be in the class, and i also had to explain the subject of the paper in depth to my professor to get it approved as my final project in the first place.

which: good god i wish i could bottle the confidence i had then. bizzarest conversation of my academic career and i had one of the youth in the support group i ran for my pracricum accidentally guess my deadname once which was also a deeply bizzare experience. it did not top selling that professor on the viability of my paper tho
