I'm going to a reptile expo and I'm soooooooooooo stoked!!!! My husband is opposed to owning a reptile but he's happy to support my hyperfixation from outlets like this!

I went to Repticon with a friend and she said "I love squishy snakes" while we were looking at some chonky fancy morph breeding age snakes. This lady at a nearby booth sized up my funky haired, animal rescuing, kindergarten teacher friend in 0.2 seconds and asked "well would you like a squishy snake?" And so my friend went home with a rescue ball python who at full size was 2.5' long if that, and had such bad mouth rot as a juvenile he didn't have a tongue, but was still an absolutely gorgeous, chill, cuddly puppy enchi who apparently still eats better than most balls

I love the herptile community so much

Okay I've calmed down but someone was being kindof a dumbass and wasn't listening to me at all

Just please 😭 remember to do your research before buying an exotic animal to take care of, I don't mind exotic pet owning but I have a problem with it when there's big chain companies or people who treat the animal more like an accessory than a living animal that has emotions and needs

There's YouTube videos that give so much great information and sites that give more detailed info and everything else, there's online shops you can buy from that actually want you to take care of an animal instead of just your money because they're mostly sending that money to conservation

Please never buy an exotic animal on impulse if you do not have the needed things always be prepared before you get it

I recommend getting them from morphmarket or repticon/reptile expos because they have reptiles, amphibians, porcupines, etc etc

Exotic just means non domesticated so even rats are exotic and they are hugely mistaken to be easy to take care of or just straight up treated wrong

So please do the right research and make sure you know your stuff before getting a big responsibility on ur hands <3

Sometimes I'm thinking I'm getting agoraphobic cuz I find it incredibly hard to leave the house for anything other than work. Even for things I need to do or even want to do. Like groceries. I know I need to go get groceries but I literally wait until I have nothing. Or I love going to the book store or plant store. I can barely bring myself to go and when I do I just have horrible dread until I get back home. Is that just being an introvert or is it actually agoraphobic.

But since we’re all going to die… I feel there’s one more secret I need to share with you.

I do not care for accounts like Insecthaus, Kevin Wiley, and the like.

The bullshit that these accounts pull off these strange “educational” and “appreciative” videos where they let arthropods (usually ones that can bite or sting) climb all over their faces, into their hair, AND INSIDE OF THEIR MOUTHS are so fucking corny. They are not appreciating or respecting the animals they work with - the reason their content works so well is because they are exploiting something stereotypically perceived as disgusting and performing something of a circus act; I.e. “look at me! I have something you don’t like on my face or on my body! It could probably sting or bite me right now! isn’t this incredible! make sure to hit that follow button!!!” I fucking hate these “animal influencers” oh my god.

Recently I saw a video on tiktok of someone who was allowing their centipedes (Scolopendramorphs) climb all over their face and near their lips, following this exact circus act formula and they claimed in the comments that these videos “show that these animals aren’t as dangerous and violent as people think they are”. You know that at any moment, your centipede which already has substantially poor vision could lose its balance, use its forcipules to dig into your skin, and inject venom?

“ok but centipede bites usually aren’t fatal and they don’t hurt that much!” Pain is subjective, venom is not. You are at risk of developing a complication from a centipede bite if you are:

- young

- elderly

- disabled

- immunocompromised

- suffering from heart conditions

- suffering from neurological conditions

- allergic to centipede venom (which you probably won’t know if you are until you’re bitten!)

- already sick with an infection

- have weakness of the heart

- suffer from respiratory issues

When I was bitten on the back of the neck by a Scolopendra metuenda, my legs entirely shut down and I went into cardiac shock due to my underlying heart problems that at the time were undiagnosed. I almost died. Filming this daredevil stunt behavior and then uploading it online not only puts you at risk, but I guarantee that someone is going to assume they can handle these animals without an ounce of respect and expect no consequences.

You can appreciate and respect an animal’s beauty and power without the need to touch or become intimate with it. You are not a more professional or interesting keeper for putting these animals on your face (where they have a risk for slipping, falling, and becoming injured!). Please respect their boundaries and their sentience - they are living, conscious things just like you and I - not toys or stunt props or whatever the hell you people think they are.

I don’t care how much you paid a man vaping in front of a folding table for your terribly kept arthropod at Repticon - stop treating it like utter shit.

I impulse bought an isopod culture of Shiro Utsuri at repticon yesterday. They are so cute and pretty and I am so fascinated by these little lives, just chugging along happy in this little leafy world

Hello! I know you said you wouldn't be attending Repticon anymore a while ago, would you advise to not attend for a potential pet? I'm setting up a home for a leopard gecko and I want to make sure I'm being responsible.

Hey there! So I'm not vending with repticon for a variety of reasons (the way it's "organized", allowing really shady people to vend, consistent sick animals at shows, theft, etc) however- I do still think it's possible to purchase a nice pet at repticon. I would really recommend taking a look at their website and researching the breeders / venders thoroughly beforehand! It's also a good idea to reach out to breeders individually to see if they have anything you are interested in, I've had people arrange for show pickups and pre-pay before as well!
