Congratulations on your turn as Iris! I'm so happy to hear you're treading the boards again!
I might get the chance to visit San Francisco early in next year, and I was wondering if you might have any suggestions of fun things to do, off the beaten path a bit, in the colder months in that fair city?
I greatly apologize for taking so long to answer this! While many of my favorite things are gone (I still weep for steampunk stores and revival movie houses,) there are still cool, unique things to do on a trip. Here are some of them which were open as of a year ago.
Japantown Mall: The best place to be, hands down. The mall itself has amazing authentic Japanese food, a giant half-Japanese and half-English bookstore with a whole level devoted to manga and light novels, and lots of small stalls of crepes and boba tea. Across the street you'll find the Crown and Crumpet, a cute tea room with an upper floor that sells EGL brands. Even if you don't buy anything, just walking around is a great day!
Golden Gate Park: Take a walk and see the beauty of nature! Have a snack at the Japanese Tea Garden while admiring the koi pond! If the tickets aren't too expensive, go to the Academy of Sciences aquarium and say hi to the albino alligator for me! Admire the Shakespeare garden if it's in season! Another fun place to be for a whole afternoon.
Lupa Trattoria: The best Italian food I've ever had in the United States.
Haight-Ashbury: While not the goth and hippie paradise it used to be, this is still a cool couple streets. There's a science fiction bookstore called Borderlands, another cool indie bookstore called Booksmith, a huge vintage clothing store called Relic Vintage, and some pretty good thrift stores as well.
City Lights: Not done book shopping? Go to the place that published beat generation writings back in the day, which now sells an eclectic collection of intellectual, classic and offbeat titles. When I would get a book and go read it at the nearbye Cafe Zoetrope, I felt like the coolest person in the world.
Pier 39 Sea Lions: Sea lions!!! An earthquake sent them here, and they've stayed here ever since. They sit on a bunch of large rafts wrestling, showing off, or sleeping in the sun. They always cheered me up.
Exploratorium: A totally unique science museum that encourages you to touch and interact with the exhibits. They have special presentations as well, so check the website to see what's going on
Musée Mécanique: Do you want to take a headlong plunge into the uncanny valley? Of course you do! This free mini-museum has animations and carnival games from yesteryear, and the huge and terrifying Laughing Sally. It's in walking distance of Pier 39, too.
Lovejoy's Tea Room: They catered my wedding!!! Great tea and pastries, and a super cozy atmosphere, plus you sometimes get to see egl friends have meetups in gorgeous attire.
The Castro: As gentrified as it's gotten, there's still something wonderful about a neighborhood with rainbow crosswalks and pride flags waving everywhere. Sob outside of the late lamented Castro Theater (now a concert venue,) go to a souvenir store, walk down to Bi-Rite Creamery for ice cream if the line isn't too long.
Bourbon and Branch, Smuggler's Cove: If you like vintage cocktails, have a night out at Bourbon and Branch, a retro speakeasy, or Smuggler's Cove, an amazing tiki bar. Call ahead for B&B, since you need reservations and the password.
Folsom Street Fair: If you ever go again in summer and are not squicked by kink, check out this fetish festival! (And no, scaremongers, children can not actually get in and be traumatized by this, as they check your ID.) Buy a corset, have experts tie you up, get sex ed from guys who've been teaching it for fifty years, see everybody in their awesome outfits. (It is somehow always on the hottest day of the year, though, so stay hydrated, especially if you're in head to toe leather.)
The Alamo Drafthouse: While not unique to San Francisco, I'm always happy to be in a city that has one of these. This movie theater shows new films, classics and cult favorites, and you can order food while you watch (try the milkshakes!) One of my best moviegoing experiences was when they showed The Lost Boys, and all the goths in the lobby looked at each other and nodded, like yeah, we all know why we're here.

Which 5 fics you've written are your favorites or most proud of?
Oh boy this is hard. And a great time for me to ignore the writing I'm supposed to be doing 😂
Good Intentions John Cena/Cody Rhodes set in 2008-2010. 100k words of it. Longest fic I've ever written and a real labour of love because wow what a Retro Pairing lmao. They're fun, and infuriating at times. I like to imagine them happily together in 2024 now after all the angst they went through!
The Hurt & Heal Series Cody Rhodes/Randy Orton in my very own little extended Universe. I'm kind of cheating because there's like 5 fics in here so far, but it's a series, they're all related okay!? I can't even pick one I "like" the best, because they're all intertwined with each other now. Weird to think Told You So was my first ever wrestling fic though! Thanks to the Rock for getting me into writing the wrestle fic rather than just reading it 😂
Something About Us Cody Rhodes/Kenny Omega. It was so much fun delving into indies chaotic bisexual heel Cody who's terrifyingly obsessed with Kenny, because he's a little brat and just needs to be put in his place by some gentle domming 😂
Ginger & Lime Cody Rhodes/LA Knight (look they're all Cody, idk what to tell you lmao). It wasn't meant to be, but this fic got some traction and I had fun watching the reaction to it. Plus Cody/Knight is a hot fucking couple.
Good Deeds John Cena/Randy Orton. Does it count to put an in progress fic? Well I'm putting one. They're messy and complicated and their relationship isn't going to work, but they're fascinating to write and I can't wait to feel all my feelings during the process.

Coord Breakdown: July 1st, 2023
Now that I've got a dedicated lolita blog, I'll be posting and discussing some of my coords, starting with a few from the past. This one's one of my personal favorites, and very meaningful to me.
JSK: Handmade
Blouse: Offbrand
Waist cincher: Handmade
Headbow: Handmade
Veil: Fanplusfriend
Choker: Handmade (sort of)
Necklace: Offbrand indie
Bracelets: Offbrand
Socks: Offbrand
Boots: Offbrand
Full breakdown under the cut.
This coord is a big milestone for me. It's my first handmade JSK (not counting a failed attempt from years earlier), and my first time using my own custom fabric!
I designed the fabric in the summer of 2022, and had it printed via Spoonflower. It's themed around Castlevania, a favorite game series of mine (and one that has quite the interesting history with lolita! Did you know Mana composed a ringtone to promote Harmony of Dissonance that is now lost media?). Each of the stained glass windows depicts one of the subweapons used throughout the games (plus wall chicken), which are also repeated as a motif inside the stripes. If you look closely, you can also see the modern and retro Castlevania logo incorporated into the surrounding glass. Beneath the windows are gravestone-like blocks, each with the name of a game's protagonists and the year the game takes place. At the hem is a quote that has been attributed to a number of people, including Winston Churchill, but is notably said by Alucard and Richter at the end of Symphony of the Night. Finally, above the border print is a pair of wall-mounted candles, which can be found throughout Castlevania and destroyed to gain ammo or other upgrades. According to IGA, these candles contain the restless spirits of Dracula's victims, who drop upgrades as thanks for freeing them from the castle.
Here are some closeups, one of which is in the black colorway! I've got four different colorways available on Spoonflower, each inspired by a different character (Richter, Alucard, Juste, and Maria). You can find them here. The fabric I chose for my JSK is poly crepe de chine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But enough fabric talk. Have at you!
The cut of the JSK is based on Bodyline's Skull in Wonderland JSK, which I've owned for years now; It's simple and fits me well, so I figured using it as a template would be the most effective way to make a good JSK for myself without too much hassle. Making clothes based on existing garments you own is a tried-and-true method in fashion design and home sewing.
I actually debuted the JSK about a month earlier while on vacation, with a different coord:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I couldn't help feeling that it was a bit lackluster. After much thought and advice from friends, I decided to spruce things up and give it another try at the then-upcoming renfaire.
This time I used one of my summer blouses, an offbrand peasant top I got at Rainbow forever ago- I think the brand is Ambiance? I also bought a set of bracelets (also from Rainbow, and they've now become a staple of my wardrobe), and a pair of black lace-topped OTKs in place of the plain black tights I'd worn before. For the rest of the jewelry, I wore a glittery purple bat necklace I'd bought from a renfaire vendor years ago (I wish I knew the name!! If anyone recognizes it please let me know!), and a scrap of black lace with a small safety pin through the back as a choker.
Finally, the remaining accessories. I made a wired headbow out of leftover fabric from the dress, with a beaded chain in front. I wore this over a veil from Fanplusfriend. As for the waist cincher, I made it out of stretch pleather and lace, along with black fabric to tie in the back. I used gold acrylic paint to add a nice patina to the leather, and hand-painted our pal Simon Belmont in a coordinating color scheme. My parents said it looks like a wrestling belt, lol.
Tumblr media
Regarding the boots, I know damn well that the renfaire grounds are muddy and uneven, so I wore a pair of riding boots I originally bought for a Joseph Joestar cosplay way back in the day. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice a little bit for practicality's sake.
All in all, I'm very proud of how this coord came out. It was really amazing seeing something I designed come to life, and working hard to make it truly beautiful. I hope this inspires other folks to try their hand at designing and making lolita!

Summer Vibes: Iris Blue Drops “Evergreen” "Evergreen," by the Windy City's own Iris Blue, is a track that sizzles with summertime fervor while artfully weaving in strands of introspection amidst its sunny disposition. From the first catchy riff, it feels like you've been scooped up and plopped down at an offbeat beach party where everyone is just too cool for school. https://open.spotify.com/track/1yEpsTQ1p7Bbw43pZ5z9D5 Vocally, our enigmatic lead singer serves up spoonfuls of charm with a dash of gritty vulnerability that seem to embody the essence of hipster-chic meets indie-rock nonchalance – think vibrant shades on an overcast day. As his voice dances upon waves of upbeat instrumentation, there’s this sense of holding back; each line delivered comes across as cautiously optimistic, though undeniably infectious. Instrumentally speaking, "Evergreen" has all the makings of your next earworm; those guitar licks hit every emotional string like they're trying to win something at a county fair game booth—and sometimes they do. Meanwhile, drums? Tasty doesn't even begin to cover it! They pop and sizzle beneath fingers and sticks as if each beat intends to start its very own summer fling. [caption id="attachment_52780" align="alignnone" width="960"] Summer Vibes: Iris Blue Drops “Evergreen”[/caption] Speaking purely from production value—it’s crispier than freshly fried bacon at Sunday brunch. The balance found here strikes between raw energy and polished soundscaping. While wrapped in modernity, there's also this retro vibe that conjures nostalgia without outright copying past eras' homework—an auditory magic trick only few can pull off so deftly. Yet within these bursts of sun-kissed choruses lies murky lyrical depth—a pool reflecting images both familiar and strange—of hesitant conversations under vivid skies casting shadows on half-heartedly nursing drinks brushing against bold hues warning signs dressed in disguise as festive garb. Amidst those charged riffs lie complexities that invite listeners not just onto the dance floor but into contemplation's quiet corner where feeling becomes thinking—where emotion wrestles cognition into submission or maybe alliance—who knows? That ambiguity makes "Evergreen" relishable repeat button fodder leaving us suspended somewhere between 'just one more time' and existential musings about what we say when we're saying nothing at all. Follow Iris Blue on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. Supported by Musosoup #SustainableCurator

Audio
We recorded this episode on Halloween Eve last year in AMITYVILLE and it was the best old school Disney film to pod about that time of year.
Dan is a pro wrestler and a comic. He also goes to Disney World all the time so it was great to hear about his park adventures. Lots of weird funny things in this movie and we had a blast pointing it out.

FIVE ALBUMS YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW!!!
aka, My Top 5 of 2020, but I didn’t want to seem too retro!
Yep, I have a classic rock blog. Yep, I think that the best rock and roll in history is being made RIGHT NOW. And yep, ALL of it is being made by women.
(Shown at top, Nova Twins by Ant Adams [x] and The Tissues by Michael Espleta [x]. I was planning to make a collage of all my faves in concert, but  not all of them were able to play in 2020. Both of these photos are pre-pandemic.)
There’s been quite a bit of movement on this list, and all five of these have spent some time at Number 1 as the year has done (gestures broadly) All This™. Anyone looking for rock and roll is going to dig any of these.
Rocking out is just the start of it, though. Wrestling with my bipolarity and schizophrenia is tough on a good day, and there haven’t been too many of those lately. The plague has also taken its toll around me, with two family members dead and a third who’s doing better, but will likely never be all the way back. (Mask up, kids!)
I’ve written plenty about how deeply Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers have moved me this year (and will do so again), but in those rare stretches where I’ve had enough spare energy to listen to music at all these days, I’ve mostly been looking for more than beautiful music. Heavy times need heavy lifting, and I find that in heavy music.
The five albums here have all helped carry me, pointing the way toward light.
1) BULLY, SUGAREGG
Alicia Bognanno is a force of nature as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and producer/engineer. (While working on her degree in audio engineering at MTSU, she interned with Steve Albini, who remains both a fan and an admirer). A Nashville transplant from Minnesota, she’s still a natural fit in her home on Sub Pop: as heavy as Soundgarden, as hooky as Sleater-Kinney.
I was blown away hearing her searing honesty while working through her discoveries of her bisexuality and bipolarity (double bi!), and her triumphant roar lifts me out of my seat every time I listen.
Tumblr media
“She sings the hell out of [these songs], her voice fraying to the point of combustion every time she launches to the top of her range. This is phenomenal music for converting anger and anxiety into unbound joy.” ~Stereogum, Album of the Week
Also, check this fantastic interview with Alicia in the New York Times talking about what she’s gone through to get here.
TURN IT UP!
youtube
2) GANSER, LOOK AT THAT SKY
Ganser syndrome is a rare dissociative disorder characterized by nonsensical or wrong answers to questions and other dissociative symptoms such as fugue, amnesia or conversion disorder, often with visual pseudohallucinations and a decreased state of consciousness. ~Wikipedia #it me
‘Just Look At That Sky’ doesn’t presume to offer solutions; it’s an honest document of what it feels like to wade through anxiety, day by day, not a survival guide or handbook of answers none of us actually have. Whether or not you pay attention to this, Ganser are simply one of the most invigorating, exciting new bands. ~Clashmusic
I saw one very positive review compare Ganser to a cross between Fugazi and Sonic Youth, but I think they hit much, much harder than either of those. And as you can surely guess, I also deeply relate to their themes of mental illness and dissociation while trying to make it through All This™. But my god, are they TIGHT. This is a BAND.
Ganser has two fantastic lead vocalists, and on “Bad Form”, bassist/vocalist Alicia Gaines wrote the song for the voice of keyboardist/vocalist Nadia Garofolo. Alicia also wrote a FANTASTIC essay on the strains that making an album during a pandemic puts on the mental health of the entire band at talkhouse: “Writing, recording, reaching out, balancing relationships outside and within the band, I found (and still find) myself under-rested and agitated to no particular end. More than not doing enough, I was not enough.”
(If you can’t relate to that, I can’t relate to you, tbh.)
This video also does a fantastic job of showing dissociation. TURN IT UP!
youtube
3) THE TISSUES, BLUE FILM
“Blue Film” is a ten-song shot of dagger-twisting electro-(s)punk. It’s completely addictive from the very first listen. The tour de force is “Rear Window”, an art-punk masterpiece of slashing guitars and mad caterwauling. Copious doses of jaunty poetics and social commentary reward the earlooker patient enough to untangle Kristine Nevrose’s hysterical meowing about intergalactic salt shakers and hysterectomies, but I’m too emotionally invested to look under the hood.” ~ Sputnik Music
“Rear Window” is in fact my most-played 2020 track. TURN IT UP!
youtube
4) GUM COUNTRY, SOMEWHERE
It’s not all heavy! But even when I’m looking for something light and hooky, I need a bite, and Gum Country has done it with the kind of swirly, feeedback-laden wall of sound that Lush or Yo La Tengo would make if they lived in LA. (Recent transplants to SoCal from Vancouver, I do think that the sunshine has gone straight to their heads, in the very best way.)
Indie music nerds will know guitarist/composer/singer/front woman Courtney Garvin from The Courtneys, and she really does throw up a glorious wall of sound. I adore this video too! Sweet, swinging, fun -- and yes, the drummer is playing keyboard with one hand while slapping the skins with the other!
I mentioned earlier that all five of these albums have spent part of the year at #1 on my list -- I think that this one might have spent the longest stretch there. Like all shoegaze, even as hooky as this, the truth of these songs is revealed in VOLUME. TURN IT UP!
youtube
5) NOVA TWINS, WHO ARE THE GIRLS?
Now, THIS is heavy! Amy Lee (vocals, guitar) and Georgia South (bass) are fucking LOUD, and insanely intense. A mix of grime, hip-hop, metal, punk, and good old rock and roll, they’re a harder-hitting, more theatrical Prodigy, with a pyre of intensity that recalls the heaviest howls of Rage Against The Machine. Indeed, Nova Twins spent a good bit of 2019 playing heavy metal festivals and toured as openers for Prophets of Rage. (Tom Morello has been a fan and supporter from the beginning.)
As you may have noted in the photo at the top of this post, their musical audacity extends to visuals too: they design their own clothes, hair, and makeup, they art direct their own videos, and more. They impress the hell out of me, and I’ve been a huge fan since hearing their first singles in 2018. I’ll plant a flag and say that Georgia South in particular is the most innovative musician on any instrument in any genre right now, but they’re both absolutely monsters.
I’m honestly not at all sure that #5 is high enough for this, but I’m absolutely certain that after this video, you’re gonna need to rest for a little. LOL
“Taxi” is the story of two gleefully and creatively violent women shaking up the local crime syndicate as they use a vintage cab for their moving murder scene. This is the movie that Robert Rodriguez wishes he was making with Sin City, if it were combined with Blade Runner and The Matrix. And gangsters. And a snake.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna take your crown I’m gonna, I’m gonna bleed you out We demand it by the hour We devour, control, power
I’m gonna burn it down Even the, even the royals bow
So not the same kind of therapeutic work being explored on this rekkid, but you know what? Fucking shit up is therapeutic too!
Definitely take this full screen, and for the love of fuck, TURN IT UP!
youtube
SO. Not done with the best of 2020 yet? I’m sure not! A lot of my favorite songs aren’t on albums (at least not yet), so for an unedited list of everything I’m finding, check out my Spotify list, 2020: Shuffle This List! 268 songs and counting, over 15 hours, and not finished yet. I’m still checking out everyone else’s Best of lists (including yours! Message me links to yours!!!), so will probably be adding to this for most of 2021, too.
And for more banging tracks by women from 2020, plus a few 2019 gems that I’m still grooving to, check out my more thoroughly curated Spotify playlist Women Bangers: A Tumblr New Classics Jam. (You’ll see a couple of these tracks there!) I’m working on a YouTube playlist and an essay to properly roll that one out. I’m also still tweaking the ending, but the three dozen or so tunes there are definitely bangin’.
Tell me if you hear anything you dig here, and tell me what YOU’VE found! We’re gonna get through this together.
Yr pal, Timmy

Sniping Lee: Alternate Shot
A comic by me and Sha-Y. Part of our NMH#: Alternate Struggles series.
This comic is pure action and rather on-the-nose with what it's commenting on.
I just thought it would be good to really utilize the potential of Call of Battle’s setting to have NMH address the latest trend in gunplay action games.
Sniping Lee’s “rescue” of plane passengers was put in as I was disappointed that after Vanishing Point, we didn’t get to see FU’s cohorts rampage across the Earth in major ways. I wanted to create a sequence that showed just how dangerous and skilled a “Galactic Sniping Champion” would be with an unhealthy dose of absurd ultraviolence. This would also facilitate obstacles that would organically impede Travis from just leaping down onto the beach rather than a typical invisible barrier (as seen in the Call of Battle's orange burning airplane icons). Ideally, it's an intriguing spin on the usual "evil/incompetent superhero destroys an airplane and kills its passengers" cliche.
The mechanics of his “boss fight” are a mishmash of Speed Buster’s and Margaret Moonlight’s combined with the typical “Battle Royale” shrinking arena gimmick; a boss is constantly trying to shoot you albeit with a tri-barrel sniper rifle. In Travis’ way are a mixture of the usual alien enemies, armed civilian NPCs, and copies of the character models used for Damon’s board meeting wielding weapons. The human enemies would have very simple move sets, low health, and are always aggressive.
Avoiding them is an option, but they can be used to distract Lee by attacking them to pass on his target reticule or running by them so that the his laser dot beam stops on them instead. Some cutscenes would play that would differentiate his “red” attacks (which can be blocked by buildings and other obstacles) and his “green” attacks (which can shoot through the above), necessitating confrontations with Travis’ fellow contestants. Getting a Full Green on a Slash Reel also gives Travis a secret “cheat” akin to the one in Sonic Juice’s RPG sequence to skip most of the lead-up as he can use the Tiger Attack on Lee’s location to charge right at the blockhouse he is camping at.
The contestant count starts from 51 (of course), and is gradually whittled down regardless of whether Travis has killed any enemies until is stops at 4 (Travis, Sniping Lee, Notorious, and Destroyman True Face) when confronting Lee; although you can end the chase earlier by whittling that number down faster yourself. Then a mostly identical version to his countdown screeching from NMH3 will play out before he’s taken out by Notorious and Travis is forced to fight the Destroymen instead, making for a more unique bait-and-switch than those of previous boss fights.
However, I still think this scenario could still work while keeping everything else in the story intact. While Travis has a similarly contentious argument about video game genres/types with Sonic Juice, he’s marginally more nice when fighting the #3 ranked alien, and it’s pertaining to a semi-old style of play rather than the hot fad thing that Lee is trying to latch himself and his opponent on. Also, Travis getting to fight Destroyman again is rendered ironic given his acerbic reaction to the new style of play forced upon him; in a perversion of his desire not to do that, he has to fight a decidedly old enemy in place of Lee.
To be honest, I’m not sure if Travis would show disdain towards the likes of PUBG and Fornite. His video game tastes are hard to gauge. We know he likes AVNs, wrestling games, Mario titles, Zelda entires, Hotline Miami, Deathman, vector graphic retro installments, arcade classics, Unreal Tournament, and top-down shoot ‘em ups. Other than that, it’s hard to say. I thought that his indie game shirts in Travis Strikes Again would offer some clues, but stuff like Children of Zodiarcs and YIIK are in that catalogue; and Travis expresses disdain for turn-based RPGs in NMH3. So, I can’t say. It might transpire that he likes them. What I am certain of, is that he’d probably be just the little bit appalled that Fortnite has Ryu carry around a gun ala those GI Joe toys from the 90s.
Not to mention other OOC affronts to a guest star’s dignity.
If Suda somehow sees this and is appalled because in his notes, Travis does like these kinds of Battle Royale games, I deeply and sincerely and preemptively apologize.
But I must confess, I just really wanted Travis to say "aim-assist shitlick".
Special thanks to the artist, Sha-Y for a particularly genius creative decision. While it was my idea to create the Let it Snipe survival board and the use an edited Call of Battle map for a Fortnite spoof, it was their idea to link Lee and Travis’ word balloons to their location/placement icons.
Travis’ shirt is the logo from West of Dead. 2020’s OTHER red-hued action-adventure roguelike set in the underworld. Ron Perlman voices the flaming skull cowboy!
