#retro Voltron fandom feelings

Omg reading that long-ass list of voltron moments yoy rebloged gave me a cringe-worthy throwback of the beginings of the fandom. But the most awkward one was the 'dirty laundry' phase, like idk why but everybody spoke of that fic; and even tho i've read a lot of popular ones i've never read that one in particular. Did you read it? why was there so much discourse about it? Some loved it and some hated it with passion, idk it was confusing

OH GOD.

Do I dare…. after all these years do I dare… express…. my Dirty Laundry feelings?

Do I touch this long forgotten cornerstone of the Klance fandom?

The answer of course is YES.

So to answer your first question: YES I ABSOLUTELY READ IT AND ABSOLUTELY WAITED IN EXCITEMENT FOR UPDATES.

The thing about Dirty Laundry is…. it’s really a basic fic. Not bad! Not fantastic. There’s nothing new about it at all. It’s your classic fake dating fic where someone has to bring a date home to their family but UH OH, some of the family is homophobic! It has all the plot beats you would expect. It’s fine. It’s fun! It’s nice. Like most multi-chaptered fics, I think it goes for too long and could cut out some unnecessary stuff, but it’s perfectly nice.

HOWEVER, the reason it got so HUGE was just… well timing really. 

THE RISE

We were a brand new fandom. A brand new ship. We needed content, but these characters were still so new to us. We had no idea where the show was going or even much of how the characters were characterised (go back to season 1. Keith does and says fuck all). So when people were looking for some content to enjoy: lo and behold a fake dating fic! Oh thank god that’s pretty safe! We know what to expect from that, right? Everyone loves fake dating fics!

The author writes well enough! It updates pretty regularly! It was really just a perfect storm of “This will do.”

So people read it. And because there was very little to recommend, people suggested it to others. People talked about it, blogged about it, held it up as the BE ALL END ALL klance fic, which of course drew others in. There were memes, fan art like crazy! People would just post on here “IT UPDATED!” and you knew what they were talking about. Some of the first BIG FANDOM blogs also talked about it a lot, so in turn all of their followers wanted to know what this THING was! I’ll be really up front about this, I followed klanced REALLY EARLY and she talked about it a decent amount. I ended up reading it because I just wanted to know what this crazy 16 year old was yelling about all the time.

 However after everyone was raving about it, new readers inevitably picked it up and ended up being a bit disappointed. Then some of the later chapters were posted.

THE FALL

As I said, Dirty Laundry is very basic. I don’t mean that in a degrading way, I just mean that in an “It is what it is” way. It’s a fake dating fic. You know the plot now. The author’s writing style is fine. Nothing fancy. Good grammar. Direct and to the point. Perfectly apt to tell the story. So with so many people raving about it, I think there was a surge of negativity from people going “It’s not even that good. Why does this have the highest rating?” and that’s not really fair. Like could you say it’s overrated? Yeah. But it never claimed to be anything grander than what it is. The fandom put these expectations on the fic, it’s not the writer’s fault. She’s just a kid writing a fake dating fic. She’s not trying to write Schindler’s list or anything.

Though what probably started the wave of discourse was the introduction of an Autistic character and some of the stereotypical portrayals of Lance’s family.

I’m gonna start with the character with ASD because that’s the thing I can actually talk about with some knowledge and experience. Bear with me… I haven’t touched this fic in a VERY long time, but I vividly recall the OUTRAGE when this character was introduced. People called her an offensive stereotype and incorrect portrayal. A token character tossed in without any care for the sake of extra kudos. I heard all this BEFORE I read the chapter, so I expected the worst… when I went to read it… it was really not any of those things. It wasn’t great! Hardly nuanced or anything, but the character seemed very textbook. Like the author had opened a journal on “What is Autism?” and was reciting it through this character. ASD is really difficult I think to write for because it actually presents itself in different ways. So when there were people claiming “I’m autistic and I don’t do that!” that’s not really fair, because your experience is not the same as others. It felt like people had a problem with how the character spoke? And I think that’s actually more from a young author not knowing how to write kid dialogue than not knowing how to write an autistic character. Writing kids is… fucking hard.

It was especially saddening to hear that the author introduced this character in honour of a very good friend of hers, who’s sibling(?) has ASD and she wanted to represent them. This representation was not the most poetic, but it came from good intentions and I felt was not hurtful. I don’t have ASD, so I don’t want to speak for others, and I realise this was not the case for everyone. 

But the other big issue was the portrayal of Lance’s Mexican family. People felt that his Mexican family being homophobic was a stereotype. There’s a reference to throwing a chancla, Lance knows how to salsa, he and his siblings blast Gasolina in the car. A lot of people felt that these were stereotypes bordering on racist, though you also had hispanic people coming forward and saying “This feels like my family”. It was a very aggressive conversation, with people labelling the author as racist and problematic. Do I think the author was problematic? Yeah, but I don’t think that makes her a terrible person. I think that just means she was ignorant and still learning about these things. Probably a few comments and a bit of guidance would have been all that was necessary in educating her about these issues. 

But that’s not how things went. 

FINAL RESULT AND WORDS

I want to make it clear, that out of all the horrible, bat-shit crazy things this fandom has done, NOTHING has disgusted me more than how Gibslythe (the author) was treated. I have never witnessed this fandom so voraciously and aggressively turn on a single individual. The whiplash from PRAISE to ABHORENT CONDEMNATION of Dirty Laundry was reeling. The introduction of the autistic character and singing Gasolina were very close (same chapter?) And that was the breaking point for a lot of people. The author was threatened, yelled at, called terrible names, and this thing that she had created, which had been so beloved and praised, was now being spat on by the very people who had lifted it up just days prior. I can’t imagine what she went through. I don’t want to. 

While I agree worst things have happened (oh god the Josh Keaton nonsense guys, that was a low point), this has always really stuck out to me as the most disgusting, because Gibslythe was just some kid who started writing a klance fic. She was just some kid. And I’ve never quite gotten over what she must have felt when the tides suddenly shifted. Some 17 year old should not be held to such high standards. Dirty Laundry should not be held to such high expectations. 

So the fic actually went on a hiatus. And the author was pretty candid with her feelings and how she wanted to either delete the whole thing, or never update again. But… amazingly…she finished it. To my absolute shock. And I believe it’s still largely unedited, because as previously stated, people did come out and say “No, I’m hispanic and I fucking love Gasolina and sing it with my family all the time.”. And I feel like it takes some serious balls to finish something that has probably become so tainted for you. 

Do I Recommend It?

Dirty Laundry’s history is vastly more interesting than the fic itself. It’s completion is almost a miracle and everyone has an opinion on it. So what do I think??

Transformers Tracks: Some of the Objectively Best Transformers Theme Songs

TRANSFORMER (トランスフォーマー) Scramble City Intro by Satoko Shimonari for G1 is extremely and wonderfully 80s, and would absolutely make an amazing Future Funk remix. Reminds me somewhat of Sailor Moon theme tracks! Pro Tip, this one is also great for karaoke.

1986 Movie Theme by Lion - We all know this one’s obligatory.

Transformer V: Victory Opening Theme ( Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Victory (戦え!超ロボット生命体 トランスフォーマーVビクトリー) by Koji Kaya is so completely slept on by the entire fandom, but it has the perfect mix of 80s vocals and 70s big band flavour which makes it a definite all-time great. Has a very 80s Voltron feel to it, almost. 

TRANSFORMERS EVO. by JAM Project for Transformers Animated isn’t particularly my style, but I know it’s extremely popular amongst the wider fanbase so I’m including it here. It’s very high energy! 

The Headmasters (トランスフォーマー ザ★ヘッドマスターズ ) by Hironobu Kageyama is another delightfully 80s track, with a touch of 70s big band but with the addition of power guitar which gives it an extra dramatic, powerful flair. This also has an 80s Voltron vibe.

Tamashii no Evolution (魂のエヴォリューション, "Evolution of the Soul") from Beast Wars Metals is interestingly also by Hironobu Kageyama and evokes early 2000s rock, which reminds me of early Fullmetal Alchemist theme songs. That’s a good thing. (It was released as one of the several Beast Wars albums; Please check the track lists, as the above album cover may not be 100% correct.)

Transformers Prime Theme by Brian Tyler does a lot to establish the mood of the series right out the gate, and matches the tone of the series. Love a good orchestral opening in a Western series.

Arrival to Earth by Steve Jablonsky for the first live action Transformers film is probably the best thing to come out of the Bayverse live action Transformers films. (If you like the movies, I’m not hating on them or you, I’m just saying the soundtrack is great and I’m still personally mad about the rest of it.) 

Q-Transformers: Mystery of Convoy Returns (キュートランスフォーマー 帰ってきたコンボイの謎  Theme - Physical by OLDCODEX is so wildly funny, mostly because it is a heavy metal track for a series that is essentially about little chibi versions of the characters. It rocks though, so if you’re into metal, here’s the track for you. I have no idea if this ever got released as a single anywhere, because I can’t seem to find it if it was, but above is the series logo.

TRANSFORMER -Dream Again- by Psychic Lover for Transformers Armada is another metal track that manages to also feel like early 2000s rock music, and it’s pretty solid. If the Q-Transformers track is too much for you, this one is the perfect medium. The album this track is on includes a bunch of the other Japanese theme songs across all shows, which is also pretty cool and is probably why they went with the G1 Autobot/logo design here.

Back to Life (80s Remix) · Hailee Steinfeld for the Bumblebee live action movie is an interesting combo of current 2020s pop music with a replica-retro vibe, which makes it fit in nicely with a lot of the classic Transformers tracks.

Honō no Overdrive ~Car Robot Cybertron~ (炎のオーバードライブ ～カーロボットサイバトロン～, "Blazing Overdrive ~Car Robot Autobots~) by Koji Wada is the opening for RID. It’s another high energy rock theme, very late 90s/early 2000s as was the trend. It’s a good track though, and I feel like it should be included primarily because the vocal performance is great. 

CALL YOU... 君と僕の未来, "CALL YOU... The Future of You and Me" by Shinji Kakijima for Galaxy Force is yet another rock/metal track, but a little softer than some of the other Transformers metal tracks and very much an early 2000s metal revival type rock song. (Lots of these in modern Transformers.)

Taiyō no transform!! 太陽のtransform!!, "Solar transform!!" by Hiroshi Kitadani for Super Link is great because it evokes the 80s power guitar and keyboard with very 90s (and almost cheesy feeling) vocals and beats. It’s refreshing after all the metal and rock music to get a little bit of a throwback theme. 

The above is not a fully comprehensive list, but they are the tracks that first come to mind when I think of pretty solid Transformers jams!

BONUS: Album Recommendation! 

Transformers History of Music 1984-1990 produced by Colombia Music Entertainment contains what is as far as I can tell every single piece of Japanese Transformers music created between those dates. It is an absolutely fantastic album, and if you can find it, I would recommend you get it, because every track is a banger. 10/10

Nightmares

SUMMARY: Ten-year-old Acxa and nine-year old Keith both suffer recurring nightmares in their respective orphanages…about each other.

Acxa

The nightmare is back, for the third night in a row.

Acxa has somehow managed to fly her ship into the belly of a gigantic space beast. How she got there, and how long she has been there, she has no clue.

Her right arm and right leg are injured, and she is bleeding from a cut on her forehead. Outside, strange amoeba-like creatures attack her ship, slowly dissolving it. Vine-like fibers are wrapped around the vessel, slowly crushing it.

A chill runs down her spine. She sees no way out. Is this how she is supposed to die? Alone inside the belly of a beast?

She awakens in a cold sweat, sitting up in bed, thrashing about and looking around frantically to get her bearings.

“Hey…Acxa…it’s me. Did you have that nightmare again?”

Hearing a familiar voice, ten-year-old Acxa Combari begins to settle down. She is in the sleeping quarters of the orphanage on Corillia, where she has been since the death of her mother. The comforting voice belongs to her best friend, Ezor Corderian

“Breathe slowly. You’re turning purple. Trust me girl, purple is not your color. Here…drink this.”

The warm milk has the desired effect, and she begins to calm down.

Awakened by Acxa’s thrashing and Ezor’s efforts to calm her down, one of the orphans closest to the pair begins to complain about the noise. Ezor, cranky herself from being awakened from a sound sleep, nevertheless sticks up for her best friend.

“Keep it up hotshot and I’ll give you something to really complain about. Now be quiet and go back to sleep.”

Ezor turns back to her friend, rubbing her back to calm her down. “You want to tell me about it?

Keith

Keith finds himself alone in a strange environment, being attacked by amoeba-like creatures. Nearby, a lake of what appears to be acid sits just below the escarpment on which he stands. Realizing the creatures are trying to kill him, he does the only thing he can think of – he dives headfirst into the acid.

Protected for the moment by his suit, Keith manages to work his way down what appears to be a tunnel.

Breaking through the barrier at the end of the tunnel, he finds himself dropping into an abyss. His fall is broken when he lands on a solid object covered in what appear to be vines.

Gathering his wits, he studies his landing perch carefully and realizes he is standing on the nose of what appears to be a fighter. Gazing into the cockpit, he sees movement and realizes someone is in there. Someone very much alive.

On the left shoulder of their uniform they bear an insignia he has never seen before.

Nine-year-old Keith Kogane sits up with a start. Sweating profusely, he looks around and realizes he is in the orphanage just outside Platte City.

That nightmare again. The one that keeps repeating itself. For four nights in a row now.

What does it all mean?

Acxa

After a night of peaceful sleep, mostly due to exhaustion, the dream comes back with a vengeance the following night.

This time there is a twist.

Stuck in her crashed fighter, she hears a thud coming from the front of her craft, as if someone…or something…just landed on the front it. Outside she hears and feels moment as whatever is on the nose of her fighter approaches the cockpit.

Looking up, she sees a stranger staring back at her. He is of a race she has never seen before. Wearing white armor with red and black trim, she can tell he is tall, and of a muscular build. Through the cockpit glass of her fighter and the face shield of his helmet, she gets a good look at his face

His eyes are a deep indigo, and his hair is black. A big lock of his hair hangs down in front of his face. This stranger is handsome, in a roguish sort of way.

He says something to her, but she is not able to make it out. Without warning, he shatters the cockpit glass and reaches a hand in to help her out. As she takes his hand, she awakens from her dream

This time she does not cry out. She does not hyperventilate. This time, she is remarkably calm

She settles down to sleep, and the dream never returns.

Ten Decaphoebs Later

Squeezing his way through the mucous plug at the end of the passageway, Keith finds himself in what he believes is the second stomach of the Weblum. Using his jetpack to break his fall, he notices a strange shape over to his right.

“No way!”

He jetpacks over and lands with a thud on the nose of what turns out to be a fighter. He cannot make out who it belongs to because of the stomach fibers covering it. Gazing inside the cockpit he spots the pilot…and realizes to his great surprise that they are still alive.

Acxa cannot believe her eyes. Standing on the nose cone of her fighter is a male of a race she has never seen before. She thinks about lifting the shield covering her face so that she can communicate with him but thinks better of it. Best to be safe and figure out who he is first. For the moment she will remain anonymous and silent.

Through the cockpit glass of her fighter she clearly hears a firm masculine voice calling out to her. “Don’t move. I’m here to help.”

From a device she has never seen before appears a Galra broadsword. She exhales in disappointment. If he thinks he is going to cut through diamond-hard cockpit glass with that…

With a mighty effort, the stranger slices open the cockpit glass as if it were paper. She sits there in shock at how effortlessly he destroyed the diamond-hard canopy. She snaps out of her daze when he silently extends a hand to help her out of the cockpit.

She has no idea who he is, but it is a hand she is more than willing to take.

Sometime later, after a brief misunderstanding that involved her running over him and taking her weapon back, Acxa and the stranger find themselves in the third stomach of the Weblum. Despite acknowledging that he is an enemy combatant fighting against the Galra, he nevertheless protected Acxa when they were attacked by stomach creatures. Realizing he is someone who shares her belief that all life is precious, she gladly returned the favor and protected him when the opportunity called for it.

Acxa now stands just in front of him and looks around. The third stomach was her objective, but she sees no evidence of the scaultrite she is there to collect.

While wondering what she is to do, they are joined by a third person. They are obviously a companion of her rescuer, but unlike her roguish companion the newcomer’s uniform is accented in yellow and black.

“Keith! Keith! You made it! We both made it!” Seeing the Galra pilot standing in front of them, Hunk turns to him with a quizzical look. “Who is this?”

“I don’t know. Someone I found. He doesn’t talk much. Also, he’s Galra.”

“What, do you guys all know each other?” Hunk whispers to Keith so as not to be overheard. “Do you really think we should be rescuing a Galra soldier right now?”

“We’re Paladins of Voltron. We can’t just leave people to die, even if they are Galra. Now come on. Let’s get what we came for and get out.”

Hearing the name of her mysterious rescuer, Acxa freezes in place as her eyes fly wide open. She flashes back to the nightmares she had in the orphanage ten years earlier.

That name. Those eyes. That hair!

She closes her eyes and thinks to herself, “It…it can’t be him.”

She slowly looks over her left shoulder, pretending to be looking about the stomach, but really turning to get a good look at her rescuer. A wry smile crosses her face as she continues the mental dialog with herself.

“So, you’re Keith. The Red Paladin of Voltron. Hmm…you’re cuter than the Galra Information Ministry makes you out to be. And it seems you are here for the same thing I am.”

Acxa faces forward and, pushing all other thoughts out of her mind, focuses on the mission at hand.

She needs to find some Scaultrite, or Lotor will not be happy.

Leaving the Weblum behind, Acxa makes for the rendezvous point where she is picked up by a Galra cruiser.

“Are you ok, General?”

“I’m fine. Get word to Prince Lotor that the mission was a success.”

“Vrepit Sa!”

The scaultrite loaded on board the Yellow Lion, Keith makes his way to the cockpit.

“So…where’s your buddy?”

Keith crosses his arms and looks down at the floor as he leans against the wall of the cockpit. “Long gone by now. He drew his pistol on me and stole a bag of scaultrite.”

Hunk decides it is time he clues his friend in on something that he is obviously missing.

“Keith, buddy, I hate to break it to you. But that Galra who was with us…is a she, not a he.”

“What? What do you mean?”

“Well, I think I means that you’re blind if you can’t tell the difference between a man and a woman.”

Keith sighs and looks up at the ceiling of the cockpit in frustration. “That’s just…great. So, I’m blind and stupid.”

“No, not stupid. Blind maybe. I mean, have you ever been on a date with a woman? Maybe that’s why you can’t tell the diff…”

Keith gives Hunk what can best be described as a death glare.

“Ok, I’ll take that as a no. Moving on…”

Acxa looks out into space and sees a faint contrail moving away from the Weblum. She knows it is one of the Voltron Lions, carrying Keith back to his home base.

She sits there, wracked by a pang of guilt she never expected to feel. She built trust with him. They protected each other and had each other’s back. And in the end, she figurative stabbed him in the back, drawing her pistol on him and stealing a large bag of the scaultrite.

That act of betrayal now haunts her.

She speaks softly as she watches the Yellow Lion fade into the darkness of space. “I don’t know anything about you, Red Paladin of Voltron. I don’t expect you to understand why I betrayed you. I hope you know I never intended to pull the trigger. Not after the way you protected me. I owe you that much.”

“Someday…maybe…I’ll have a chance to explain my actions and tell you I’m sorry. For now, be safe Keith.”

“Until we meet again.”

END NOTE: This story is set within the AU of The Galra Chronicles. It builds on a brief scene in Chapter 3 of the Marmoran Generals in which Acxa relates to Zethrid the dream her ten-year-old self had about meeting Keith.

I Am Looking For More OP Blogs On Tumblr

I have been noticing that whenever I follow a Tumblr user (most of them are rebloggers), they disappear from my Following count (either they deactivated their account, or blocked me; but mostly their account gets deactivated).  Most Tumblr users want more followers; I want more blogs to follow, especially OP (original post) blogs.

I am not saying there should be no rebloggers (in fact, I encourage reblogging); it is that there are so many users that only/mostly reblog other users’ posts; I want to follow more OP users because I have a big thing for originality, creativity, and individuality.  Rebloggers tend to agree on what the OP (or other reblogger) says, and whenever I go to the tagged or search section/s, only the OP posts are apparent, and no rebloggers with their own creative tags (unless I go to their blog and search whatever keyword/tag they designate some of their posts with).

Yes, I reblog other users’ posts, myself, but I tend to add my own thoughts and tags whenever I do so; and since my reblogs are not in the tagged or search sections, these posts are not mine, since I am not the OP.  Even some OP users have reblogged posts of their own, as well (but they usually do not go overboard with them, and they usually have an equal amount of reblogs as well as original posts).  Because I promote creativity, talent and individuality, I do not reblog as much as most OP users.

I was the solo mod for the Fairy Tail Nakama, and I am currently planning a Allurance fanzine to launch in 2019. I was an artist on 4 other fanzines within the following fandoms; Miraculous Ladybug, Naruto, and Fairy Tail.

The reason I like Catra and Adora, as friends, enemies and as a romantic pair is because they as stand alone characters are not just defined by one another, but they both at the same time have had a huge impact on one another throughout season 1, especially Catra.

I love Catra and Adora’s relationship because it’s so complex. Hello! My name is Noah or Fricz, I’m currently in a lot of fandoms being some of them YoI, VLD, Banana Fish and of course SPOP! I deeply enjoy Adora and Catra’s relationship because it feels real for me, it’s a friendship you can easily find in real life, making it easy to understand their personalities, I like how it portraits how it feels to grow up and how unavoidably friendship will change with it and how said friendship can overcome the change or how it’ll break. 1.       One thing to point out about these “leaks” as opposed to the two real leaks in the past, the new leaks are on purpose and posted with the intent to cause drama and hype. And as for DW not making a statement, why would they? They are getting free marketing and with such a huge gap between the last press event and the last season why not let it fester and create that hype, they know people will still watch. People are gonna want to tune in to find out the truth, DW knows that.

You know the saying about “No news is good news” well in regard to management in a lot of cases to draw in hype, and also to pretty much not have to deal with the legal nightmare of finding all the images and getting the fakes taken down they go with the idea of “Any publicity is good” because that means that they’re getting hype as you pointed out. As you said Anon, the point of these leaks is to cause drama and create issues between fans and then sit back and laugh at all the shocked kids that are freaking out. They probably are already planning round two or three of this.

2.       Voltron is set in the super fancy future why would anything ever be sepia tone? Especially something that’s happening in a flash forward.

So the basics here is that it’s supposed to feel “Nostalgic”. Like “Oh look at that memory we shared together of a wonderful time.”

Again typically sepia is used to make things look or feel aged. Old photos, memories, etc. Sepia is not a color you use willy nilly because it doesn’t always look good on screen in large dosages in filter. The color brown in general is typically used, or at least that color, for sunset like moments to make the viewer feel melancholy that time is ending. You never use that color when you’re showing something triumphant. Also if you do use it for a happy occasion you tend to use it for a photo in a memory book.

Look at Coco, and the photos on the alter, you have several that are black and white and a few that are a brown color because they’re supposed to invoke a certain feeling in you. You want to feel warm and welcome and like everything is in the past and nostalgic. And the leakers got people to feel that way with the colors. And Flash forwards tend to be brighter and blurred in some cases with frosted edges. Or something to depict that it’s not in the present. And if it is just a time skip, there would be no need for the color change.

3.       I think it’s weird that in the second wedding photo Shiro is leaning away from Roy as he leans in. Odd???

It’s something that normally happens in some anime. The less, shall we say dominating person leans back embarrassed by the attention and more aggressive actions by the more dominate person who is initiating the kiss. By the body language this means that Roy here is the more aggressive figure in their relationship going in for a kiss though still acting a bit shy about it, while Shiro is less aggressive and is being more shy and then decides to go with it. This sort of action usually happens with a girl in Shiro’s place, as in Japan the girl is seen as less aggressive a figure and why certain female characters over the years have been seen as very different than most of their counter parts.

4.       Don’t know if it’s been pointed out yet but in the kiss pic Roy’s arm just randomly disappears through Shiros chest. That’s not how it works.

Correct Anon. The arm should be either around his waist or on his shoulder or chest. As per the kiss with Hikaru (Rick Hunter) and Misa (Lisa) from Macross. Roy’s arm is blending into Shiro’s side and that’s not a good thing. I know Mir makes some small mistakes here and there, but man this would have the art being sent right back to the studio if it was blurring that badly. Unlike Hasbro in the 1980s this sort of thing isn’t tolerated as much anymore because digital means it’s a quick fix rather than hours of reanimating the scene.

5.       so, since you're the go to person regarding the legitimacy of the Voltron leaks, I just saw the [SPOILER] photo of the paladins grown up projected on a screen with people in front smiling [/SPOILER] the person that shared this with me said this is a photo of the french VA team finishing dubbing. Thoughts? Comments? Tumblr doesn't let me link the image, but if you're interested I can share it with you some other way.

So as I said before I think the photo of the cast is real, and more than likely taken on another date. The thing that jumps out to me about the photo after examining it more is where they are looking. Everyone is staring off to the center of the screen, but the camera that took the photo is off to the right. This means that this was probably a photo being taken because of the man in the center, who I’m betting is a famous and well known voice actor.

These sorts of pictures happen from time to time, even here in the states, when a cast gets someone that is famous and they want to take a photo with them. Remember actors are fan boys and girl’s too.

When I went to Anime Midwest a few years ago Sonny Straight (Lupin the 3rd, Krillen, a number of characters in anime) mentioned how he was sitting next to the late VA of Speed Racer, Peter Fernandez, who was signing small cars of the Mach 5. He was talking to him, while geeking out in his mind, and Mr. Fernandez gave him a car with his autograph on it. Sonny basically was playing with the car when Mr. Fernandez wasn’t looking making the noise of the Mach 5.

Nolan North just recently confessed to chasing down Sir. Anthony Hopkins on to an elevator and talking to him for a while, because he didn’t want to miss a shot to meet the famous actor who was recording lines on Retro Replay. (Also watch the show it’s funny.) 

So more than likely the picture was being taken with a well-known French VA and that it was for posterity sake for the studio and the actors. Studios will sometimes do this if they have a named actor in the cast doing a voice.

6.       I've gone back through Bexs likes and I don't see any of the leaks. What's the source on that claim?

I’ve only been told about this, I haven’t seen anything of it either. I do not have an Instagram so I can’t tell you about that stuff.  

Either Bex liked something that was similar, or someone thought that they liked it, or something. I really can’t say for sure. But regardless, unless it’s in their contracts and the NDA states they can’t like fan art, actors typically do like art.

7.       Watching your post about the whole studio thing I thought about something, I didn’t know about Ezor’s va leak but maybe when she did it she simply didn’t think the fandom would immediately jump on it and spread it, then is it possible that the french studio ‘leak’ is real too and that the same thing happened?

Most actor’s don’t think that what they say is important. I think in Kimiko’s case she really wanted to just give the fans the okay that Shiro was going to show up again because of all the freaking out on Social Media about it and trying to be a good person. Lionel (I think that’s how you spell his name) the French VA seems like he was thinking of just showing that they were recording the show again. Maybe getting people excited, since, most people that follow Voltron aren’t following the dub actors save for those that are following in France right now. And I don’t know how many know of the actor due to the fact that he’s more a live action actor like Steve is so this is his first dubbing job for a cartoon.

The thing is that the second picture was a personal one that was taken at some other point in time, because of the change that Lionel’s hair has gone through it seems. Also, as I said before this was taken from the side meaning that they’re looking at another camera, so it’s not a case of them taking a “Last hurray” photo, and more likely that they were taking a picture with a well-known actor that had visited the studio to do a voice.

The “leak” is real in that it is a legit photo of the cast, what’s fake is the stuff behind them.

8.       I reported the violations to the French company but they haven’t got back to me :/ surely over something this serious they would?

I wouldn’t expect them to be getting back to you regarding this. The photo that was taken wasn’t their property in this case, it’s owned by whoever took it from the side of the editing booth. If it was a professional photo, then yeah they would want to know info.  It could be that too, much like DW here in the state’s the legal department isn’t seeing anything huge to go after and would rather people just ignore it.

After all they have only a month and a few days here states side for it to come out, also in France too, so more than likely they are more worried about the promotional stuff they need to do after She-ra comes out.

You’re right, if it was serious we would see things about it all over the place, not just on Tumblr but on other sites that cover this sort of news. Like with the Mir incident. This is not serious to them and probably isn’t even registering yet for them.

9.       One of the most glaring things for me is that Roy isn't even on the poster. Even the most minor characters are in it and yet you're going to tell me Shiro's future husband isn't? Yeah, no way. Also in your post debunking the leaks you forgot to mention how the background characters are weirdly static (especially Pidge) in the wedding edits, but Shiro and Roy are moving.

Yeah having Roy on the poster would be a legal nightmare waiting to happen, as rsasai said in one of their other posts, since the show is airing in Japan and Japan worships Roy and Macross, you would have to deal with Studio Nue, Tatsunoko and Big West for any rights to be used. Not to mention that fans of Macross would want to know what the hell was going on since Roy is a big deal. As I said above reminds me way to much of a Newtype magazine static illustration that was traced over.

10.   I commend you on your impeccable taste in TV shows, my good comrade. Also, whomst else misses the 80s & 90s where people would just watch and enjoy the shows they watched, and didn’t ruin them or the experience for other fans? Ahhh the good old days!

Well it depened on who you watched the show with, but over all, for the most part, people genuinely weren’t as worked up over shows. Or at least I never noticed save for a Lisa is better, Lynn is better fight I once saw between two girls on the playground about Robotech, but other than that…it was mostly quiet. Not sure about at offices in the day though over shows like Dallas or Dynasty.

11.   To the people who say “The staff having not said anything about the leaks yet means they are true!”. I am almost sure they didn’t say anything about the “Klance voiceline leaks” either, and it was fake.

O.O What? Wait…is that like a dialogue line that was said? OR are we talking about those old telephone call lines where you paid like 9.95 and a dollar or something every minute after a few minutes to talk to your favorite character? Because if it’s the latter, hell yes it would be fake since no one does that anymore. Well save Cdawg who does it for Black butler calls but those are free.

12.   An anon sent to you said "maybe DW just doesn't care anymore since the show is almost over" but it's really not about VLD anymore. Like I said before in a previous ask, this sets a very bad precedent. DW is a business, which means they have to look to the future. By not taking this seriously, they're implying they won't take any of their other licensed shows/IPs seriously either. No company would want to damage their reputation so badly just because a contract is almost over.

But see, the thing is, it’s not that they don’t care it’s a question of how the legal wants them to handle it. If you kick up too much of a fuss, then it’s “Well they are real” if you  don’t then you have people saying you’re not doing enough. Ultimately it’s not up to DW to chase things down since they are not the main license holder, that is WEP, and the other studios are not owned by DW or WEP they are only licensing the series to dub via Netflix. Then throw NBC Universal on this, and you have that factor in play here…you’d have a lot of people involved. Does it look bad, kinda. But most studios have the same response. It’s easier to let things die on their own than interviene as it becomes making a mountain out of a mole hill. Or to put it in a better way. Let’s take a real case that recently happened. There’s a famous artist that likes to take images and do a little change then say they are his own works of art. He’s been doing this for years and artists hate him because he’s taking their copyrighted works and screwing with them only a little and calling them his own. Recently, like a year or so ago, he went on Instagram, found cosplay and other pictures of female celebs and non celebs, commented on it. Took the photo and the comment, put it together as a larger picture and called it his own. This is considered art appropriation and can be seen as a legal way of doing art. Richard Prince, the artist in question, has been getting away with it for years. 13.   in the french va video, who is the guy in the middle? the director?

That guy in the middle may be Patrick Borg. Reason the cast may be taking the picture with him is he’s the voice of Son Goku in Dragon Ball and has been since the start of Dragon ball Z, and is a well-known in VA in France. Or It’s Jerome Wiggins who does a main character on Zagtoonz Zak Storm. My guess though, it’s probably Patrick, and since the crew is pretty much younger actors who grew up around the hype of Dragon ball Z, wouldn’t surprise me if  they were taking a picture with him because he was doing a voice for them.

14.   No, it's the opposite now. All the evidence in the Universe prooves that the leaks are real but you all choose not to believe in it. And I'm okay with it and I'm more than okay If I'm wrong but if the leaks are real almost everyone who believes that the are fake would be greatly dissapointed and will feel betrayed

As I said before Anon, if you want to believe it, fine. That’s up to you. I have no horse in this race, I’m only presenting facts as I find them and having two graphic designers and other people look over the images and such, to them they seem doctored or created. I’d rather people make the call themselves, but as other’s have said well before me, it seems insane that two studios decided to risk their careers to leak this stuff. You do realize that in doing so they will have cost the trust of several other clients they have and it would probably put them out of business with Netflix, and cause BTI Studios to lose the deal with Altor and Shamrock that they recently made this past year, and for Netflix to pull out of it’s vendorship with VSI and probably make other networks, like CN, and Nick, pull out of the deal. No one, in their right mind, would put themselves or their careers in danger over a cartoon show. No one. It would cause them to be blacklisted and not have work in the VA community ever again. The sheer level of WTF that would have to run through someone’s minds to do this if they were a professional in this field would be astonishing. Honestly, no I wouldn’t feel betrayed or disappointed. I would be more worried for the studios and wonder if they would be able to continue to run as they are, or have to close due to the fact that most of their clients would bolt knowing their intellectual property wasn’t safe. Then there would be the lawsuits from WEP, NBC Universal and probably Mir for putting out copyrighted material that they don’t own. Would I be upset about the show, no, honestly I wouldn’t. Allura dying would be a mirror and parallel to Ryou dying and taking Lotor with him from Go lion, something Voltron the original didn’t do. Shiro being married, awesome. Roy Fokker getting his name out there and getting people to watch Macross to know who the hell this hottie is, okay in my book. The crew taking a picture together, nothing wrong there.

The only thing that could disappoint me is no ending or a cliff hanger, since, well I got that with Force from DiC and this would be the first show to have a real ending outside of the original.

I don’t get why people are worried about me or others feeling disappointed when there are four other variants of the show that exist that we can watch. That’s just silly. I’m more surprised that people don’t care about the well-being and lively hood and careers of the VAs internationally being wrecked by all of this. That’s where my concern lies. Shipping and all the other things, I don’t care about. My care was that the characters were happy and got along, and that the robot fights were cool.

As with most other Shiro-Paladin ships, it’s hard for me to get on board with it due to age/maturity differences. Seventeen and twenty-five are pretty far apart from each other in term of life stages and personal growth, and I couldn’t imagine myself being able to enter a romantic relationship with a seventeen-year-old. 

There’s also something to be said about Shiro acting as a older authority to Lance... abruptly shutting Lance off from making siren noises, or telling Lance sternly that Keith will fly the Red Lion to the Blade of Marmora’s base, etc. There are many times we see Shiro keeping Lance in line, and not in the same sort of way Keith and Lance balance one another as equal comrades. Shiro might not be that much older than the other Paladins, and he might have a long-standing bond with eighteen-year-old Keith, but Josh Keaton himself said he channeled his fatherly experiences into Shiro’s voice acting, and the fandom’s nickname “space dad” entered the Paladin’s Handbook itself. Shiro’s relationship to Lance would be that of an older brother or “father” more than anything, so I cannot see it developing into a romance.

I suppose I also have a little challenge imagining what Shance would be like... Lance with his energetic spontaneity and Shiro with his serious professionalism? I don’t know that they’d match well.

So it’s one of the many VLD ships that I’m purely neutral on. ^.^ Nothing wrong with it, chill with it on my dash, just nothing that draws me personally!

Hance

Hance has some interesting potential and it could be cute, though I don’t ship it myself. It’s one of those bonds I like as a friendship! And frankly I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HUNK AND LANCE’S PAST. When Katie first enters the Garrison, it’s obvious Lance and Hunk are already good buds, and in the first episode, Hunk makes a comment that Lance’s actions “always” get him sent into the principal’s office... indicating a long period of shenanigans between them. I love how we see Lance casually lay his arm on Hunk’s shoulder when checking his assignment at the Garrison... I love that they are friends and Hunk gets pulled into Lance’s tomfoolery... and I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS PAST HISTORY.

So I love Hance as friends and I want to see more of it on screen in the present day. Gimme gimme!

Shatt

Okay I’m actually excited for the possibility of Shatt. I’m excited and I admit it. Good potential! 

We know that Shiro got along well with the Holts in his team... Shiro and Matt have got to have a good bond going. Shiro risking his life to save Matt from the gladiator ring already says something special. I could totally see Shatt being a cute endearing little thing. But I think I’d like to actually see them on screen more together (more than the opening two minutes of S1 E1 and that Champion flashback in S1 E3) and see what their real dynamics are before hopping on the Shatt train.

Side note... I facepalm that the fandom decided to name it Shatt. As in, like, the past form of shit with an extra t. I know Mattiro is longer but... it? doesn’t? sound? like? a? verb? for? pooping?

Plance

As much as Pidge says Lance bothers her, and as much as he can bother her with his more energetic antics, it’s fun to see the two of them have fun together. “Space Mall” is the prime example of Pidge and Lance getting excited together over the retro video games. That was great fun and I hope they build Pidge and Lance’s relationship!

But I also feel like Pidge and Lance are going the buddy route. I guess it’s hard for me to see Pidge getting romantic with any of the Paladins and would feel a bit off for her character. Plance is something I don’t think would develop into kisses. Hugs, though, yes. Let’s get platonic Plance hugs!

They really need to give Keith and Pidge some time together, now that you bring it up!!! This hasn’t been developed much yet! There are a few interactions they have together, such as Keith yelling at Pidge about leaving the Voltron team way back in S1. But I think that Keith and Pidge actually becoming friends would be cute, and I want that to develop.

They’d be good at venting to one another... I imagine they probably have similar venting styles and pet peeves. They could probably have that “I KNOW RIGHT?” bounce back-and-forth that would make friends feel better once someone whines about their latest woe. I could imagine them being serious together. Also I can imagine them just chilling. They might not be doing much, Keith idly lounging, Pidge fidgeting around with her latest tech project, but they’d be comfortable in one another’s company, would make a few comments, would have a lazy evening well-spent. They wouldn’t rub into each other’s boundaries but would have good relaxed evenings together. Methinks I’d like that!!!

If Hunk gets together with anyone in Voltron, I completely utterly wholeheartedly vote Shay!!!!! They are both sweet individuals who work for the better of the group, and we can already see them acting loyally to each other. Hunk is sooo doggone set to rescue Shay that he gets legitimately grumpy when the Paladins make another stop before the Balmera. Shay, on her own end, is willing to risk her life and safety for Hunk in turn. How much more they would be with even more time spent together! 

Romantic Hunay would be adorbs. Their relationship works very well as a friendship, and that’s what I’m sure they’re meaning to write it as, but I do think that Hunay could easily transition into something more. Love iiiiiiiiit!

Below is a summary of my presentation on Servamp. While it is about how nostalgia has powered fan communities for decades, it’s also going to be a kind of depressing psychoanalytic look at the long medical association between nostalgia and melancholia. But it also will be an optimistic discussion how fandom has helped people live through difficult experiences and towards practices of self-care. I hope attendees will find the presentation informative and helpful.

In the ongoing serialized manga Servamp, the lead antagonist, the vampire Tsubaki, refers to himself as the Sin of Melancholia. Unable to move past a traumatic memory—the loss of his creator, a parental figure—Tsubaki fashions himself as a father to his own assembly of vampires, only to again struggle with despair when some of his brood die and he fears that their association with him will get more of them killed. Trapped in that moment of loss and unable to fully move on, Tsubaki is frozen in time—the psychoanalytic definition of melancholia and its closely associated medical condition, nostalgia.

Anime and manga have served as focal points for the development of communities built around shared interests, fostering productive relationships, creativity, artwork—as well as toxic communities. Much of the content watched and read have consistent themes related to melancholia–the bleak wistfulness of despair about past events–and nostalgia–known today as a desire for the past but, in psychoanalysis and even in nineteenth-century medicine, also considered a pathologized form of homesickness. This presentation applies psychoanalytic and historical medical theories about nostalgia and melancholia to consider the following. First, what can explain the ongoing fascination fans have with older, retro, and re-made anime and manga— such as Voltron, Escaflowne, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? Second, how does such interest in the past as shown in Servamp help us, as teachers, students, and fans, understand the emotional and psychological dimensions of our fascination with anime and manga? Finally, what can we gleam from the productive examples shown in anime and manga to better foster self-care in responding to difficult circumstances, inside and outside anime fan communities?

1. What’s your ultimate comfort food? Hm... I am not really sure for that one... I would have to say maybe limb or flank steak? They always taste good... or something sweet or chocolate of some kind. 

2. If you were able to keep any kind of pet and somehow had access to everything that would allow you to properly take care of it, what would you get? The answer is dependent on whether or not the creature is real or fantasy. If real: it would be hella rad to have either a newfoundland or (if I wanna go special) a tiger. Big fluffy animals are my fav. For fantasy: it would be a church grim, cause fiery ghost dogs.

3. If you had the chance to take a trip to any country for a year, where would you go? That’s a tough one, mostly because I have kinda... lost my desire to travel... I guess going to Scotland or Ireland would be cool?

4. What’s your favorite artistic style when it comes to video games? (For example “retro” pixel games like Shovel Knight or realistic graphics like FFIX) I notice I like to lean towards semi realistic. Transistor has a very beautiful style that I really love.

6. What would your dream job be? Actually, I’m currently in school studying to be an animator to achieve my dream job! My end goal is to work at Roosterteeth.

7. Do you wear glasses or contacts? If you don’t, SHOULD you but you just don’t want to? I wear glasses, and I am pretty sure I will never wear contacts cause that means putting something in your eye and I just can’t--

8. Are there any fandoms you’re neck deep in right now? If not, list a few things you like, like video games, movies, shows, etc. Hm... I wouldn’t say I’m “neck deep” in a fandom, but the ones that I think about a lot currently are:

9. Do you take showers in the morning or the evening? I take showers in the morning, unless I have to wash my hair and I have class. Then it’s the evening.

10. Have you or do you have any people in your life that you feel have changed you as a person in a positive way? My mom has always been a powerful force of support and guidance for me in my life. I can always feel comfortable talking to her, and recently I’ve been working to be more open about some of the things that have plagued me. There’s also my brother, and my friends (that includes you peeps in the DnD group), and @thekniftykat who was my first roommate. I consider myself an incredibly lucky person.

11. Do you have a habit of talking to inanimate objects? I do, especially when they aren’t working properly.

This is probably going to be long... 

1: if someone really wanted to understand you, what would they watch/listen/read?

Listen would be the easiest thing as I am a fan of jazz compositions and jazz songs. Sprinkle some Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, Troye Sivan and Lukas Graham, David Bowie, Moana and The Book of Mormon, The Hobbit and TRON: Legacy Soundtrack, Nathan Sharp and Thunderbirds tunes (Side note: I Can’t wait for TAG Sountrack Volume 2, Ben Foster confirmed my favourite piece from Comet Chasers will be in there because it was his favourite too!!) and then you have me. I will take a stab in the dark and say that my music taste means I am a varied genre musician. I do respect other people’s taste and love learning about new lifestyles and stuff.

For reading, I love Rick Riodan’s writing with modern day problems and mythology PLUS pop-culture references and puns because that is my sense of humour (Thor watching Netflix through his hammer and Peaches “Grooting” is hilarious to me). Mystery novels like “Dead in the Park” are also my favourite to sit down and read (even though I usually put the book down halfway through to speculate the ending). 

For watching, I am a late night person most of the time so I have become obsessed with American late night shows such as James Corden, Seth Myers, John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. I cannot go to bed without knowing the latest information on global news big and small otherwise I feel like I’m missing out on some big news. And the different variety in jokes the hosts/writers come up with to be original is interesting. It has helped me out in annoying class and racist family discussions because I walk away the winner. I also love a good mystery tv show or film because speculation is fun, spy films fall under the same category for me (Kingsman and 007).

8: What musical artist have you felt most connected to in your life?

I don’t know, a straight white girl with a passion for music... there are a lot of choices out there (sadly). Probably Lorde because she’s kiwi and grew up in a low quality suburban area just an hour from where I live. We both grew up listening to David Bowie too and are the most-likely-successful musicians in our high schools. That’s the best I can do.
