The Devin Townsend Project: Sky Blue
Tumblr media
Hello guys! Thank you for the response on my latest reviews. It tempts me to continue putting the newer ones out but today i am going to tackle a curiosity album that is also due for an anniversary review. I just started listening to this musician a few months ago and have taken quite a strong liking to his overall work. This album is by one of his full band projects and is technically part of a double release. The first being this disc and the second one being the follow up solo album to Ziltoid the Omniscient. I reviewed that one a month ago and found it to be a surprisingly solid release so here’s to hoping this is another solid review. It’s reached five years old so let’s see how its aged.
Rejoice: We begin with some metallica futuristic effects to set up an interesting ambiance. Muffled female vocals in the background begin over a rough rhythm section before Devin arrives with a nice sense of grit in his voice. The aggressive instrumentals will do well for fans of standard metal that focuses on rhythm. It does lack in terms of melodic catchiness since it lacks a full chorus. As an opener it doesn’t ease listeners in casually and takes them on very bluntly; risking losing a casual listener. I could see decent live potential due to its experimentation with backing vocal choirs and a rhythm focus that could keep an audience entertained. Aside from that it feels like its missing something to really latch onto the listener this early on in the album. 6/10
Fallout: The guitars begin with a more melodic tone over computerized female vocals. It takes its time in warming up before the female singer arrives to deliver some rather engaging vocals. She brings a sense of melodic catchiness that the previous track lacked. Devin does a solid job of delivering complex high notes that never seem to wear down. Its a nice dual role between him and the female vocalist that seems to be a common staple on his work with the Devin Townsend Project. It does a good job of avoiding the risk of smothering the listener with overproduction and really brings a sense of climatic ambition to the album; which will surely stand a strong chance of convincing the listener to continue on with their listen. 8/10
Midnight Sun: Acoustic riffs begin this track with an interesting surprise because based on his prior work i was expected some much heavier work; but this album seems to be showcasing a more classically melodic focus. Devin experiments with heavily layered harmonies that mesh with the full feeling instrumental melodies to create a strong sense of atmospheric depth. It certainly shifts a bit more towards the ballad side of music but does offer the listener a risky experiment that does well and showcases Devin’s consistent level of complexity; even if he goes overboard at times. The thing that i do appreciate about him is that he is fully indie with owning his own label and writes pretty much everything that he has released. It showcases a true sense of honesty and what his true vision in his music is; with all its positives and shortcomings attached. It makes it easier to connect with these tracks when looked at it as such. 8/10
A New Reign: Devin begins with a slightly darker but equally holistic set of vocal harmonies. The instrumentals bring forth a decent showing of melody while Devin and his female vocalist work together to create an emotionally powerful vocal duo. Their layered atmosphere is very beautiful and will do a great job of providing a therapeutic outlet to the listener during a time of frustration. They do bring in some tense moments in here with gloomy keys and guitar work and some spaced out growl vocals for added emphasis. I do wish that the drums had a little more complexity in the album so far since past albums have really showcased that guy’s talent; but these kind of songs are simplistic enough instrumentally to be understandable in that regard. It helps keep some smothering out of the mix and doesn’t throw off the tempo in it as well. 8/10
Universal Flame: This is a highlight track and as close to a single as there is on here. It begins with an immediate shout of powerful bliss and energetic instrumentals to proper it even higher. The backing female vocals give it a nice sense of beauty while avoiding smothering things. Devin takes on a slightly different style vocally and uses softer harmonies to create a nice texture for the listener to soak into. The lyrics will stick out a little bit more this time and should be nice to sing along during the chorus; which actually sticks out this time firmly. This would make for a decent live track and is a nice one to get slowly energized to; after waking up in the morning. Devin really showcases some power during the mid section with growl vocals that actually add emotional urgency to the vocals as opposed to direct aggression. The guitar solo is a great focal point that will further enhance it’s live appeal as well. Definitely recommend this track if you are just browsing; though his albums typically seem best enjoyed in sequence verses shuffle; due to their very complex structure. 9/10
Warrior: This middle track begins with more cheery guitar melodies and powerful vocal harmonies. The female vocallist arrive for slightly rougher instrumentals in the background. They create an interestingly chaotic rhythm that is nice to focus on for a bit before they shift into softer atmospheric melodies. As with the majority of the other tracks; the vocals are too layered to really make out what she is saying so unfortunately lyrics rarely seem to get the chance to ponder over and appreciate. It’s not a bad piece but definitely is a bit bumpier with just the female vocalist featured as opposed to her and Devin working together to strengthen each other up evenly. 7/10
Sky Blue: Devin arrives over a soft bass line to deliver low harmonies that will be easy to appreciate as the instrumentals slowly wake up in an effective manner. It’s a more electronically subtle track that gives the minimal instrumentation a nice sense of interest that outweighs the risk effectively. The female vocals continue to do a good job when focused on but this relaxing piece focuses pretty strongly on a sense of melodic bliss instrumentally. I could see it being an interesting piece to see played live since it would be a good piece to wind things down after more his heavily ambitious work. Not bad at all for a title track! 8.5/10
Silent Militia: A solo vocal call to arms begins over heavily muffled samples before the drums arrive with the guitars to slowly begin to energize the listener. It contains a more aggressive yet cautious rhythm that will showcase interestingly live. It uses softer transition segments to showcase the subtle electronic effects; bass lines; and female harmonies. Devin delivers a pretty powerful chorus that makes effective use of his growl vocals and could make this one of the heavier tracks on the album. It still isn’t heavy by the standards of his older solo work; but provides a gradual change of pace that still manages to fit neatly with the tone and focus of the previous tracks. 8/10
Rain City: This nearly 8 minute song begins with a shift towards calming key work that provides a soothing support for Devin’s gradual entry. He focuses on soft harmonies that gradually grow in emotional urgency as the electronic drums grow. The female vocals combine for a layered effect that will develop a strong level of complexity that is beautiful and extremely relaxing. This song brings forth a strong sense of melody that shaping it up to be one of the most interestingly effect tracks on the album; which will make its longer runtime eagerly worth the sit through. I’d be interested to see this live but considering it’s heavily dominance on electronica in the background and atmospheric flair; it’d be a challenge to reach this level of strength. 9/10
Forever: Devin begins with a layered vocal style that works over a soothing yet spaced key presence. It provides a holistic feeling that will continue to provide a sense of relaxation that helps to make this album different form most of his previous ones. It feels very heavily like a suitable pick for an album closer so considering there are two more tracks and one is 8 and a half minutes long; i’m curious how this is going to effect the flow of the album. 8/10
Before We Die: Drums begin this track with a nice sense of powerful ambition that makes the previous track understandable. It has a nice sense of emotional beauty and motivational energy to get the listener compelled to resolve whatever issue is troubling their mind. The drums deliver a slightly more energetic presence in the mix but remain in the background firmly still. choir vocals are used to a very pleasing effect that delivers a strong sense of emotional complexity to the track. They are a smart trait to add more interest to the listener this late into an hour long album. It also shapes it up to be another of the album’s highlight tracks. I could see it being a very solid live track that would deliver an ambitious performance while using the choir segment to garner a sing along moment with the audience. It would actually be a very beautiful sight to see live so i’ll have to look for live videos  when i get a chance. 10/10
The Ones Who Love: This finale track is only a minute and a half long and is basically a choir closing that feels like a continuation of the previous song. 0/0
Overall album rating: 8.1/10
Not a bad score for this album and it’s a good pick for when you want something that is softer while energetic verses his more aggressive material. It does a good job of avoiding the risk of being overdone; so i could see this being one of his more mainstream friendly albums that is a decent length listen but a smooth one at that. Other than that i hope you guys enjoyed the review; now i have to head out and get ready for a wine festival today.

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and Raindrop Prelude for Dabi???
Hey Logan.
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
I think I’m the more cautious one, and Gabe is more likely to dive head-first into adventure. Not that Gabe isn’t cautious, they just weight the consequences faster than I do.
Raindrop Prelude: Are you and your f/o the type to stay indoors on rainy days or go out and play in the rain? What do you do if you stay in?
Neither of us like being wet longer than we have to. Being wet with a fire Quirk tends to make me a little useless, and being cold tends to leave Gabe in a lot of pain, so we stay in and cozy up to each other.

For anyone who would like to answer! From the Classical Music meme: Hungarian Rhapshody No.2, Blue Danube, Summer (Four Seasons), and Winter (Four Seasons)? (@toogayforthistoday)
Let’s answer this for Midoriya! ^^
Tumblr media
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
I think this would depend on the scenario. Like say someone was captured by a villain or something. Midoriya would end up thinking about the best case scenario but still wind up rushing into danger because he wants his friends safe as soon as possible. I on the other hand would be like the one who stays at base and interacts via ear-com.
Blue Danube: What kind of dancers are you and your f/o? Full movements with extra flourishes or 1 am in the kitchen slow dancers? Is there a silly in between?
I wouldn’t say we’re anything to extreme but definitely the other two. Sometimes when I have a bad dream (because I have them often and therefore lose a good bit of sleep) he’ll notice something’s up and so he’ll play something soft and we’ll simply sway until I’m drowsy once more. As for any silly in between, of course there is. We may be heroes in training but we’re nerds to and will bop to anything to make each other laugh. Bonus points when we get others to join in.
Summer (Four Seasons): What are your favorite summer activities to do with your f/o? Any plans for this summer?
Swimming is something I like to do! Midoriya has taken me to Takoba Municipal Beach Park a few times and helped me get over my fear of drowning anywhere I cant touch. He’s a good teach and has helped me learn to swim better and doge any sneaky water attacks he may try to pull.
As in do we have things planned for the coming summer? No but I’d be more than happy to do so. He’s one happy ball of sunshine and any time with him is good fun time.
Winter (Four Seasons): What sort of traditions do you introduce to each other when the holidays roll around? Or do you experiment and try out new things?
Winter is my favorite season out of them all but I can’t say I really have any traditions that I usually take part in yearly minus the general festivities of Christmas. That was before getting closer to Midoriya that is.
Midoriya and Inko have celebrated many years together obviously but they’re the family to have something planned for the entire season and it’s so exciting to me! From just casually taking walks together and making snowmen of our favorite heroes to attending winter festivals and playing every single game there is to try and win each other as many gifts as possible is just so wonderful to me and I will forever be even more excited than before when winter rolls around once more.

classical music self ship asks
the credit for this ask meme goes to @firebird-inkheart thanks a lot for making this ! i loved these questions, they really stood out and i loved coming up with the answers :3
Arabesque: Morning, midday, or sunset walks? Where do you and your f/o like taking walks to?
> either midday or sunset ! it’s amazing to watch the sunset on a flourishing meadow and see the stars come alive. we do love middays, too, especially during the winter when it’s all cold and bright outside. we’ll take walks basically anywhere, and we love exploring unknown pathways and little roads in the forests near home. we’d definitely love go on a longer hike someday on a mountain range or somewhere equally exciting.
A Little Night Music: You and your f/o arrive at a ball, what is the first thing you guys do?
> ...head for the free drinks and food. after we got our glasses we’ll go “mingle” with the people aka walk around arms linked bragging each other (read: me telling how lovely clyde is while he blushes) to everyone else while getting tipsier as the time passes.
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
> we’re both more on the cautious side, but i can be eager to go all in and drag clyde with me. he’s loyal and enjoys doing whatever makes me happy, so he’ll definitely follow me no matter what sort of shenanigans i come up with. at the end of the day we do like routine and pre-planned things and find comfort in them, so it’s definitely not a daily occurrence that we get spontaneous. i think it’s important to maintain a balance of sorts, haha.
Fantaisie-Impromptu: What is your go to fairy tale au? Do you and your f/o’s reverse roles or stay traditional?
> i think it’d be rather traditional but with a small twist… clyde would be a horse handler/trainer in a grand manor owned by a lord. i would be a cousin of the lord who’s coming to visit the family for the season. after a shy but rather adorable meeting by the stable we’d both be extremely smitten by one another. we’d spend as much time together as possible, talking about all sorts of things, and there’d definitely be some intimate riding lessons… on a horse, i mean :P our parting would be emotional but we’d write each other letters until i’d call off an engagement with some rich man and i run off to elope with clyde.
i just now realised fairy tale isnt exactly the same as medieval/period drama au but this will do
Clair de Lune: Do you and your f/o write love letters or poetry for each other? How often?
> he writes love letters, i write poetry. when i’m away or not in the best mood he sits down to write letters about various things, but always something about me. he’ll tell me what he likes about me the most, what sort of things he wants to do with me, his thoughts and ideas and gushing. it’s so adorable and makes my heart humbled and soft - i’ve saved all the letters, obviously. meanwhile i write poetry, trying to put my feelings for him into words in a way that hasn’t been done before. i love finding new ways to express my love, new phrases and words for what he does to me.
Blue Danube: What kind of dancers are you and your f/o? Full movements with extra flourishes or 1 am in the kitchen slow dancers? Is there a silly in between?
> we’re the kind to dance at any moment, to any music — usually prompted by me. i’m the one to pull him in to a dance while silly, memey songs such as out of touch or africa play in the background. we have “our songs” as well, obviously, and we’re a bit more serious then, dancing slowly and being all romantic about it. my favourites are the dances in the bright mornings, though, when i’m doing chores and jamming to music and clyde wakes up to dance with me. it’s the sweetest thing to see him dance so freely, just barely awake.
Wedding March: What is/was your wedding song(s)?
> we’re 99.99999% sure it’s gonna be harvest moon by neil young! it’s been our song for a long time now. clyde said he’d also love coldplay’s green eyes, which i’m also totally on board with. maybe we’ll do both? we’ll do both :’)
Raindrop Prelude: Are you and your f/o the type to stay indoors on rainy days or go out and play in the rain? What do you do if you stay in?
> we stay inside, no doubt. rainy days are perfect for long mornings in the bed, big plates of our favourite comfort foods and movie marathons or holding our book club. we’ll also bake, do jigsaw puzzles, play all sorts of boardgames and just talk about anything we come up with. spending time just cuddling in the silence is definitely something we’ll do as well. sometimes it’s all we need.
Liebestraum: What dreams do you and your f/o have for the future?
> we’re pretty simple folk. we want to get married, buy a cosy house with a big garden away from the city. a child somewhere down the line. i’m hoping to find a few new peeps for the antique shop to take it on when we want to retire. travelling a good bunch is also in our plans.
Spring (Four Seasons): Do you or your f/o like gardening? Is there something you two enjoy planting or see growing?
> we both love gardening! clyde’s been growing herbs on the windowsills for a few years now, as he doesn’t have a proper garden yet nearby his trailer. but once we decide to move, we’ll make sure that our new house will have a big garden! i’d love a garden where i’d be able to grow some vegetables as well as a section for beautiful flowers. clyde’s definitely a big fan of that, too, and we both have big ideas for our future garden.
Summer (Four Seasons): What are your favorite summer activities to do with your f/o? Any plans for this summer?
> summer is the best time for travelling and exploring new things! we love jumping on clyde’s truck and going for a little (or not so little) road trip; see new places and just go wherever we feel like going. sometimes we’ll fly across the water and go visit old cities and pretty countrysides in a few countries. but we’ve got bunch of things to do at home as well! we often go on a picnic or go to the nearby lake for a beach day. i also spend a lot of time in duck tape to keep clyde company when i’m not working (also it has good drinks and air conditioning so it’s a win-win haha)
we’ve thought about returning again to the beach we went to in may! it was only for a few days to test out the place, but we ended up loving it so much we knew right away we had to go again. that might be happening in august ! other than that we just want to relax and enjoy ourselves.
Autumn (Four Seasons): Fashion time. What are your wardrobes like? Who is more likely to choose style over comfort? Who prefers cozy clothes instead?
> i’m a very heavy mix of style and comfort. i wear a lot of earthy colours, yellow, green and brown, but blue and red as well. i love wide pants and funky jeans and sweaters and shirts of all sorts — especially during the winter. for the summer i’m about the shorts, skirts and t-shirts. i also wear overalls and my cherished jean jacket.
clyde is more about comfort. he wears rather simple clothes, jeans and button-ups or tshirts most of the time, and when it’s cold he’ll wear a black turtleneck beneath. i’ve bought him a few more ”wild” items of clothing, as he calls them, since they have some sort of pattern that he wouldn’t normally use.
Winter (Four Seasons): What sort of traditions do you introduce to each other when the holidays roll around? Or do you experiment and try out new things?
> being a finn, i’d totally introduce clyde to different sort of christmas traditions when the festivities roll around! we’d cook and bake stuff i’ve made around christmas before, celebrate independence day and so on (while i cry about not being able to go to the sauna). i think we’d combine some of our own traditions to form a christmas that’s just our own, like for example we’d open half the gifts on christmas eve and half on christmas morning :P of course we’re experimental and open in that sense that if we stumble upon a cool idea, we’d totally try that out and if it works, we’d make it a tradition.

Hungarian Rhapshody No.2, Fantaisie-Impromptu, Wedding March for you and loki!
Thank you for the ask @yumejin! I haven’t had much canon Loki content to inspire me lately but I really loved returning to some of my ideas for these questions.
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
Loki is definitely the one with the schemes and plans. If he wasn’t so enthralling I think I’d be a lot more cautious but I think he brings out a more daring, risk taking side to me. He’s the dazzling mastermind of the adventures and mischief and I, starry eyed, am along for the ride.
Fantaisie-Impromptu: What is your go to fairy tale au? Do you and your f/o’s reverse roles or stay traditional?
I’ve not really thought about a fairy tale au. Maybe a kind of alternate mythology au like Hades and Persephone might work though. I haven’t discussed this on this blog yet but my Thor s/i is rather fantasy based- a sort of lich-wraith girl accidentally created as a result of a botched necromancy attempt on a dead raven. I can’t think of any fairy tales off the top of my head that involve undead bird girls at the moment though ahahah. As far as the roles go they’re much the same. I like the imagined dynamic I have with Loki, where he is the older more dominant one that I adore almost to a fault -and I'm you know...smol. I’m big on the devotional aspect here.
Wedding March: What is/was your wedding song(s)?
Loki and I would probably get secretly married in universe in some wild circumstances, so I don’t know if we’d have the big ceremony and lots of people there to watch us have a first dance or anything. I definitely have my own Loki playlist though! I think Linger by The Cranberries has been one of my most constant personally iconic “Loki” songs for about 7 years now, so I’m going to go with that!

Please give us some details on these 😘 A Little Night Music Hungarian Rhapsody #2
A Little Night Music: You and Phil arrive at a ball, what is the first thing you guys do?
Oh we’ve never been to a ball, but we have been to a couple galas and fundraisers and award shows, and typically the first thing we do when we’re there is seek out where we’re supposed to sit, and where our friends are lol. Phil hates shit like that, but he hates not being with me more, so he accompanies me to the events and sticks right by my side the whole night. He likes when we have friends to go hang out with, but even if we don’t, we’re best friends so we just hang out with each other at our table lmao
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
So,,,,,,historically,,,,,,,,,,,,I’m the one who is much more likely to get involved in some kinda nonsense. You’d think it’s Phil because of his job, but he’s actually INCREDIBLY cautious and hesitant about stuff like that. He tends to not want to get involved with things if he can avoid it, whereas I’m literally always winding up in some sort of shenanigans lol

A Little Night Music, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, and Raindrop Prelude for any f/o :)
(i know these asks are primarily for romantic f/os but i wanna talk about Hellboy and the specific prompts you gave arent explicitly romantic so im gunna)
A Little Night Music: You and your f/o arrive at a ball, what is the first thing you guys do?
Go for the food! If they aren’t here on work, Hellboy wants to scope out the drinks and August wants to find some sweets
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
Hellboy’s slightly more cautious, not for any self preservation but because August’s human and Hellboy doesn’t want to risk him getting hurt. Hellboy’s big and fireproof, August talks to ghosts; if they run into a monster HB’s definitely got the edge and he stays on guard same as he always does. He might not think before he shoots but Hellboy’d rather die than let a member of the BPRD go down on his watch.
Raindrop Prelude: Are you and your f/o the type to stay indoors on rainy days or go out and play in the rain? What do you do if you stay in?
Hellboy’s usually gotta stay out of sight of the public but rainy days people don’t usually pay as much attention and they can get away with it. Besides, August wants to see who can make the biggest puddle jump. If nothing else, the two of them like to sit out on August’s apartment balcony and just…watch the sky. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes just sitting together helps the two of them clear their minds and calm down.

Hungarian Rhapsody Number 2 and Raindrop Prelude for Kite? @goldenworldsabound
YOO YESS!! always down to talk about that wonderful lad! @goldenworldsabound
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
- surprisenly, and also may not-so to the surprise lol, my insert would probably be the one to head on into adventure. with her bubblier personality, it would seem that way, so that inat to say that she isnt blind/unaware of her suuroundings.
- Although, when it comes to being the even More Cautious type, that would definetly be Kite, he would be one to put thought into a situation, and taking the correct precautions.
Raindrop Prelude: Are you and your f/o the type to stay indoors on rainy days or go out and play in the rain? What do you do if you stay in?
- If Niether of us are out in the field, doing work, then we’d probably stay indoors on a rainy day. Kite doesnt seem like a home-body, so he might end up having some tea, watching the rain from the window, he likes the sound. My insert would either join him, or get him to cuddle with her, if its their day off lol

Hungarian Rhapshody No.2, Liebestraum, Raindrop Prelude, Fantaisie-Impromptu with Dazai or Leon :3c
Leon time!
Hungarian Rhapshody No.2: Who is more likely to dive headfirst into adventure and mischief? Who is more cautious?
Leon’s the more adventurous one, even though it means him getting lost, Kat has to be the more sensible one and make sure he’s not getting lost.
Liebestraum: What dreams do you and your f/o have for the future?
Just having a happy and fulfilling life together is enough for us. With Leon no longer being the Champion, they just want to enjoy life and raise a family.
Raindrop Prelude: Are you and your f/o the type to stay indoors on rainy days or go out and play in the rain? What do you do if you stay in?
Inside, definitely. Kat’s not a fan of rain and Charizard can’t go out in it. They just chill out and play video games or watch movies.
Fantaisie-Impromptu: What is your go to fairy tale au? Do you and your f/o’s reverse roles or stay traditional?
Tangled! Definitely Tangled! Or Rapunzel I guess if we’re being technical. We keep our roles. Kat being the magical-haired princess who wants to see the Kingdom, and Leon being the handsome thief who is stuck with trying to guide her there.

Hungarian Rhapshody No.2 and Clair de Lune with Priam? :3c
Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2- Who’s more likely to dive into adventure and mischief? Who’s more cautious?
People think Priam’s about rushing into battle but he’s smart about his battles. Comes from experience, after all. Anne on the other hand has anxiety so of course she needs to plan things out. She has gotten better at making quick adjustments, though
Claire de Lune- Do we write love poetry for one another? How often?
Both are more about vocal assurances but there was moment in Priam’s S support that said he could be quite poetic. I think Anne would respond to the poetry but rarely initiate writing it
