What is GMMCast, Anyway?

So if you're new to our podcast, you may have some questions. What kind of podcast is it? What's it about? Who's involved? Is it affiliated with Good Mythical Morning and therefore Rhett and Link? ...To tackle the last question first: no, we are not affiliated with them, our acronyms just overlap. Onto the rest! Green Mountain Mysteries is an actual play podcast, hosted by The Pocket Podcast Network! We play a roleplaying game together, edit it down, and then release it as a serialized narrative. Our game master and editor, Michael Freitag, even writes an entirely original score for the show!

We play The Dresden Files Roleplaying Game by Evil Hat Games, based on the series of urban fantasy novels by Jim Butcher. For those unfamiliar; the books are about Harry Dresden, the only 'Professional Wizard' in Chicago's phonebook and the various mysteries he's hired or pressganged into solving.

Our show takes place in that same world, with all the Fae politics, magical conflicts, and monstrous entities that come with it. However, our story takes place in Burlington, Vermont and begins on January 1st, 2020.

Mere hours into the new year, a ghost ship rises from the depths of Lake Champlain and dredges up a small army of undead with it. This proves to be but the beginning of a cascade of magical events and crises that engulf the city.

Cue the theme music and the poster!

Standing in the way of these magical cataclysms is four individuals. A psychic, a doctor, a thief, and a hunter.

First is Desdemona Brown (Played by Christine Tardif): Desdemona is a medium psychic with everything that entails, communing with the spirits of the dead for a reasonable fee.

What most people don't know is that she's the genuine article.

What even fewer people know is that she's haunted by a strange entity that only calls itself 'Mister Jack', a mysterious devil on her shoulder that grants her power, but continues to add it to an unspecified 'debt' she will one day be forced to pay. Second is Doctor Sylvester Coopersmith (Played by Darius Southland): Once a promising athlete headed for the professional soccer leagues, Sly Coopersmith suffered a strange, supernatural attack that nearly crippled him and derailed his big league ambitions.

In the wake of this, he's relocated from New York City to Burlington. Here, he's become an MD, a proctologist, a college professor, and a bitterly sarcastic prick. Despite his attempts at the contrary, his life is once again drawn into the magical and supernatural, neither of which he has the time or patience for.

If magical bullshit is going to come to him, he's going to kick it in the goddamn teeth.

Third is Rosetta 'Ro' Kamen (Played by Gwen Vetter): The prodigal, estranged daughter of a Rhode Island mob boss, Ro Kamen is a professional criminal, a thief-for-hire. She can break into anywhere; get in quick, out quietly, and make a tidy profit doing so.

She also is half-fae, the daughter of a Sidhe. A Changeling. A fact she didn't discover until this past year.

Her hunt for her missing fiancé, Valencia, has brought her to Burlington, Vermont. It's here where she finds herself drawn deeper into the supernatural world she's always been a part of and never known, learning more about what she is... and what she might be capable of.

Finally, there's Albion Graves (Played by Thom Freitag): When Albion was a teenager, a chance encounter with a renegade vampire ended in death and violence. It also lead to Albion's introduction to a secret society of monster hunters, the Noctis Vigilia.

Rather than run from the horrors he was forced to witness, Albion followed the Noctis deeper into them. He's become a wandering monster hunter, armed with a small arsenal of weapons and tools of the trade as much as his unshakeable faith in the patron of his hunt, Odin All-Father.

His wandering draws him to Burlington, where he quickly finds himself in the middle of a much larger supernatural crisis. One that's going to require a lot more than mere firepower to survive.

- amada: water type imo her main partner is a luvdisc. you understand my beeautiful vision. probably second ttypes into fairy tho

- sofia: electric!!! electric. bud loves to spam paralysis effects anf then just pummeling yku. buds partner is a voltorb ok?

- diego: itd be kidn of fuckrd up not to give it ghost type. jsut for the bit. i think it also second types into grass its partner is a pumpkaboo

- rhett: shockingly it is not dark type nor ghost typw i think hed mostly be a steel type actually. you dont fuckng understand but you dont have to. his partner is a magnemite and its a siblinf to sofias magnemite

- reed: normal type which soudns borinf cuz it is. ey are pretty straifhtforward tou know.... ey probably have a cute pokemon like a teddiursa or smth though

- aldrich: DRAGON TYPE its thw closest to the awesome fantasy world they live in in their hwad. um i think they have a goodra probably but they dont havw many pokemon in their party period

- julio: fuvkkkk its kind of hard to pick btwn fire and rock but i think he also has a hard time committing. taht said jf you asjed him hed call himself a fire trainer. hes very classic and has a charizard

- dina: poison. it is abotu the slow death and the just waiting you out. all its pokemon havw been maxxed in super traininf and are all equipped w shit like leftovers to keep them alive an infuriatingly lonf time. it s main partner is a croagunk

- isa: grass type of course theres not really any other option. they have all the flower shaped bitches in thsoe pokeballs you know it ... they have a cherrim thwy cherish more than life itsefl

- jesse: psychic type is just so up thwir alley i know fairy type was probsbly expected but osychic is reallt the right answer. they do habw a galarian rapidash though

- yua: bug type. all of hers have two types thohgh none have the samesecond type. her partner is a shedninja

Resolution (angst version)

“Always wanting you, but never having you

Makes it hard to face tomorrow

'Cause I know I'll wake up wanting you again

Always loving you, but never touching you

Sometimes hurts me almost more than I can stand.”

Rhett’s voice cracks, and his hand drops away from the strings, drawing out a discordant screech as it falls. Rhett cringes at the sound and reaches for the black-labeled bottle on the table in front of him. He leans over his guitar to screw the cap open. It drops from his trembling hands and rolls under the couch. Rhett barely notices—he’s busy chugging the burning liquid down his throat. The sting is good. Makes him feel more centered. Makes the hurt in his heart dull a bit.

Someone shrieks of laughter outside, and there’s a loud boom followed by a few small whizzes. The music has stopped. It must be close to midnight.

The room sways around Rhett. He closes his eyes and hums the lyrics under his breath.

“Always loving you...”

He smiles and swings the bottle in rhythm with his tilting world. The liquor sloshes inside, spilling on his jeans. Rhett opens his eyes and stares at the wet spot expanding on the fabric—it looks like a map of a fantasy continent.

The ache in his chest swells again, and he takes another swig.

“Having a private party?”

Rhett lifts his head, and Link’s face swims into focus. He’s leaning against the door frame, smirking with his arms crossed over his chest.

“The company’s good,” Rhett slurs and lifts the bottle towards Link before tipping his head back and taking an overflowing mouthful. He wipes away the dribble, sloshing more whiskey on himself.

“Your company’s drunk,” Link claims, making Rhett shake his head. Rhett closes one eye and lifts his index finger while still holding onto the neck of the bottle with the rest. His hand swings as he tries to point to Link.

“Lies,” he says, turning the finger towards himself. He lifts his chin and says as clear as he can: “Tipsy. Not drunk.”

Link’s shaking his head. His sigh is half-amused, half-annoyed. He walks up to Rhett and grabs the bottle. Rhett grumbles and curses, trying to get it back. Link’s faster, and the bottle disappears into a cabinet. Rhett moans and looks at Link with pleading eyes.

“Your tipsy ass has had enough. Let’s go splash some cold water on your face, and then we gotta find the girls. It’s almost midnight,” Link says, pulling Rhett up. There’s not enough space between the table and the couch, and they end up chest to chest.

“Midnight,” Rhett says, gears slowly turning in his head. “Are we doing a countdown? Three-Two-One? Time for a kiss.”

And before he can stop himself he’s ducking down and pressing his lips on Link’s.

Time stops.

Link’s lips part ever so slightly, and Rhett feels him sigh, feels him press closer, feels a ghost of a touch on his lower back.

But then Link pulls away. He’s apologizing, minimizing, blaming Rhett’s drunkenness. And Rhett’s nodding along, agreeing and smiling a lopsided grin that cuts deep into his core and leaves a festering wound there.

“Go clean up,” Link orders, looking past Rhett with wide eyes as he escapes the room. Rhett’s left alone. Now it’s him swaying—not the room. The sob starts somewhere deep in his belly and takes a while to rip its way out. Rhett’s back on the couch, curling around the gaping hole in his chest.

A mistake.

A grievous mistake. He’d already decided. He’d already come to terms with the fact that what he wanted from Link would never happen. He’d already moved on. Hadn’t he?

There are more sounds from outside, cheers, and fireworks going off with increasing intervals. It must be almost time.

Rhett gets up, wipes his face, and takes a deep breath. He stalks into the kitchen. The house has turned into a ghost town—the space that was only moments ago filled with laughter and bodies pressed together is now empty. The party has moved outside and left behind a trail of red solo cups, trodden-on chips, and pieces of colorful streamer littering the floors. It’s fitting—Rhett muses as he’s looking for a clean glass—that the void inside him has manifested outside of him as well.

He drinks a big glass of water, straightens his back, plasters a smile onto his face, and steps out of the patio door. In the sea of faces, only one matters. Link’s on the far end of the yard, arms wrapped around a tiny waist, face buried in the crook of a slender neck. Rhett watches them. He lets the image burn into his mind. Tries to tape it over what just happened.

A small hand takes his and tugs.

“Hey, babe. You almost missed it.”

Rhett smiles at her. She’s gorgeous. She’s smart and caring, and funny. She’s amazing in every way possible.

But she’s not him.

“Are you gonna make any resolutions?” she asks, head tilted to the side, smiling teasingly.

“One.”

“Oh?”

Never again. His lips will never again touch mine.

“Exercise more. Gotta get fit before the wedding,” he says, winking. Her laughter is a salve he never knew existed. He can do this. He can forget. He can be happy. With her.

There’s a countdown. There’s a kiss. There are more cheers and fireworks.

There are conversations and music and more alcohol, and hours later, Rhett finds himself in a dark utility room, pressing a lithe body against the wall, whispering his want into reality, kissing heated skin, and plumped lips.

Has anyone ever broken their resolution this fast? Must be a record.

A rough night leads to a better morning in Mobliz.

A thud woke Cabanela. He stared into the darkness for several seconds trying to catch his breath and coming to the slow realization the sound came from him. Hard wood lay beneath him. He was on the floor. He kicked away the rope, wire, no, blanket entangled around his legs. Shapes were dark blobs in the darkness that gradually made more sense as his eyes adjusted. Bed beside him—had he really fallen off?—gramophone, pale shape hanging on the wall—his coat.

The nightmare faded into mingled shreds. This was his room in Mobliz, away from towers and labs and ships. No pain. Full control. He rose, rubbing his arm absently and leaned against the window to stare out. Stars dotted the sky. The moon was only a sliver tonight and growing low.

The decision was immediate. He wrapped his coat around himself, started to reach within himself—just a small flame—and stopped. It was gone. This was better. He briefly considered the lantern by his door and left it. He knew his way and he passed into the front room. Another consideration was given the counter and that too set aside. He needed air.

The garden, his personal project lay on one side of the relic shop-turned his home. Even by starlight it was too dark to make out much, but he knew the flowers were starting to bud and should start blooming any day now.

He lay back next to the garden to watch the sky overhead and let his thoughts wander through Mobliz, the current set of plans, his garden and steadily away from the past, from Vector and from… Figaro. A mental stumble. Maybe one day… a simple tour around a newly rebuilt Mobliz. He could show them the garden and… nothing more. Simplicity. Their path was for them to decide. His place was here.

He waited there until a rosy glow tinged the horizon and the village started to stir into the life as workers rose to prepare for the day. Another day of work. One step closer to seeing Mobliz reborn and another scar removed from the land.

Now was as good a time as any to see to the garden for the morning and he rose, shaking away the unwelcome stiffness that settled into his limbs. His scowl faded at the sight of the flower buds waiting for his care.

“Mr. Cabanela!” The call came as he finished watering. Rhett stood by, a burly man with a good natured smile and in Cabanela’s limited experience, impressive skill in carpentry.

“Mooornin’ baby.”

“Margot’s got a real big breakfast goin’ right now. Told me to go,” he raised his voice to a higher pitch, “fetch that skinny rake of a man before I’m forced to have words.” He shrugged helplessly. “Her words. Gotta warn you she wasn’t too happy about you skipping supper last night.”

“Assure her I’ll be theeere in a jiffy.” Who was he to risk her wrath a second time? He hadn’t meant to miss dinner, but there was a delay in a shipment of materials that would affect the week’s scheduling. A change of plans was in order and one thing led to another until before he knew it time had slipped past him in the old busy way he’d almost forgotten.

Once Rhett left and he tidied himself up he strolled down the worn path. It would be cleaned up in time as well, but for now it was serviceable and there were several higher priority matters to attend to. A small tune came to mind and he whistled as he made his way to the others. All in all it was shaping up to be a good start to a better day.

i can never take these type of questions seriously, if you’ve seen my answer to my top five favorite tv shows [ x ] i broke that shit down into different categories just to give a wide variety of answers

i’ve had a goodreads account for a couple years, so these 31 books i’ve marked as favorites there, just to cover all bases. i’ve also tried to not answer with the sorta typical ones so you won’t see hp or stuff... soz not soz.

my flat out favorites:

the millennium trilogy by stieg larsson - adult, thriller, mystery

this includes the girl with the dragon tattoo, played with fire and kicked the hornet’s nest. just the first three, the two that have been ghost written don’t exist to me. the first book can be read as a standalone, the 2nd and 3rd books are much more entertwined. they do delve into some trigerry material, namely sexual assault, so heads up there.

reality boy by a.s. king - young adult, contemporary

i love a.s. king, this was the first book by her that i read. it deals with a boy that was on a supernany type show and the aftermath of that now that he’s a teenager. it sounds stupid, but holy shit is it some quality writing.

it’s kind of a funny story by ned vizzini - young adult

this deals with mental illness, it’s set in the floor of the hospital that deals with those issues. there was also a film adaptation that stars emma roberts that also pretty solid. easily one of my all time faves.

childhood faves:

20,000 leagues under the sea by jules verne - adult, scifi

one of the first classics i read. it took me three tries but you know, i made it through. definitely recommend, though please don’t try and talk to me about this book because it’s been a good decade since i read it last.

evil genius by catherine jinks - middle grade

it’s set in australia i believe, genius teenager, exactly what you think that the title would suggest with a few twists and turns along the way. it’s part of a trilogy and the second book genius squad is just as good. i haven’t ever gotten around to the genius wars, but maybe someday.

the looking glass wars by frank beddor - middle grade/young adult, fantasy

this is an alice in wonderland retelling. i’ve never read the original, but frank’s twist on it is great. i will admit that i like the second book in the series, seeing redd, a lot more but still i’ll recommend the first. the last book, archenemy was a little meh, but still pretty solid.

favorite books to bitch about

a little life by hanya yanagihara - adult, literary fiction, giant fucking book

it chronicles the lives of four friends post college in new york. the book is written to be intentionally “timeless��, there’s a ton of abuse [ sexual, physical, emotional ], there are meant to be two black characters in the book and neither are handled all that great. it’s been heralded as this great gay text of our time, and honestly i couldn’t disagree more. if you want to read it go for it.

gone with the wind by margaret mitchell - adult, literary fiction, gfb

THIS BOOK IS TRASH. i will say that i do love melanie hamilton, the bitch might have supported the kkk but for so much of this book she was the only character i cared about. scarlet is alright. BUT I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS MOMENT TO ANNOUNCE THAT THERE IS NOTHING SEXY OR SWOON WORTHY ABOUT RHETT BUTLER. NUMEROUS TIMES IN THIS NOVEL THE MAN THREATENS TO RAPE HIS WIFE. HE BLAMES HER FOR SHIT THAT SHE LITERALLY HAD NO CONTROL OVER. literally all of her other husbands were just better people, thought the fact that ashley wilke was clearly a gay man and everyone was thristing for him was cute. it’s also just blatanly racist and is reconstructionist propoganda that frames the civil war more as the war of northern agresssion and spouts that all southerns saw slaves as members of their family and stories of slave abuse was just propoganda from the north. it was solidly written and i’ll talk to you about it, but just no. also apparently there are a couple of spin off novels written by other authors and just why?

the devil wears prada by lauren weisberger - adult, contemporary

i read this book in a day and it was just trash. the movie is far superior, the character in the book makes no sense and she complains about miranda despite the fact that book miranda is hardly ever actually around. and for the bulk of the novel miranda isn’t ther and yet andy continues to complain. she then complains when miranda is there but by this point andy just wants to be passive aggressive and she does shit that she knows will annoy miranda. like.. just quit. it won’t bitch about this book as much as the other two i just needed a third honestly.

so there you have it, hopefully this answer was worth the wait.

Review & Wrap-Up:

While reading The Soul Keepers I was telling everyone I came across about it! Even a couple of Sisters from the Church of Christ that have been going door to door in my town for the last few months; they stopped by to talk about the Book of Mormon (I'm a reader, I read everything, including religious texts if they're given to me) and instead I talked to them about The Souls Keepers!

I really loved this book! For a debut novel and even a young adult novel, the concept behind the story is original and encapsulating. From the moment I started reading it I was hooked! Author Devon Taylor created personable characters and put them in a world (the spiritual world of Earth's souls), and made them even more personable by putting them into (essentially) everyday situations, causing a calming effect and suggesting that there really is more life after death; that you're life has a purpose here and in the after world.

And touching on a topic from my last review — The Trouble with Unicorns — Devon knows how to write a battle scene! (YAY! 🤗) The battle scenes in The Soul Keepers are chapters long, but not so long that they get boring. I was a little nervous at one point where I thought "Wait... that was it? That's how that ends? All this led up to that?!" and thought Devon did a copout on me, but it was a trick and the battle continued! Ahh! I loved it!

I really couldn't say enough good things about The Soul Keepers. I could go on and on, but I try to keep my reviews short and simple. So if there's one thing in this review that you read I hope it's this: This is one book that I would highly recommend to everyone!

Science Fiction New Releases: 04 April, 2020

Shanghaied veterans stranded bootleggers, bounty hunters , and the birth of the Legion feature in this week’s newest science fiction releases.

An Axe To Grind (Four Horsemen Universe: The Guild Wars #4) – Jon R. Osborne

The Omega War may have ended, but neither Earth nor the galaxy are at peace. Bjorn Tovesson III, commander of Bjorn’s Berserkers has returned to Earth.
