People and referendums currently up for voting right now on November 7, 2023 are state and local elections and have nothing to do with our foreign policies and is 100% domestic policy focused.
If you’re too busy trying to come off faux morally superior to realize that fact, then you’re going to come off as an annoying condescending privileged white person who uses excuses to justify not voting because deep down you know that most of the harmful policies we’re trying to avoid won’t actually hurt you.

moving in to a new place is scary, especially when that new place is your new college dorm. at least y/n didn’t need to worry about messy roommates or just terrible roommates in general, deciding to opt in for a single room instead. luckily, her room was adjacent to the communal bathroom and… no one else. the only neighbors y/n had to be worried about were whoever was going to be across the hall from her and all those people adjacent to that room.
she had already moved in the day prior, said her farewells to her parents, and was currently spending the day at her desk setting up her google calendar. school wouldn’t start for another week or so, the first initial week being full of multiple move-in days for students to get settled as well as an orientation day where students got put into groups to take a tour of the campus.
y/n kept her door wide open, utilizing the magnet attachment to keep it open so she didn’t need to prop up anything against it. the sounds of people moving in down the hall were used as background noise and, honestly, although y/n wasn’t one for actually putting herself out there, she liked hearing the noises of people talking: it made her feel as if she were part of the community.
a knock on the wall caught her attention, and y/n turned to greet whoever was at her door. that was another perk to having her door open when she wanted it too: if people wanted to say hi to her and befriend her, she happily would!
“hello there, couldn’t help but introduce myself once i saw your door was open. i’m ted, i live right across the hall from you. mind if i join you in here? my roommate is about to move in and i don’t want to be in the way but don’t really have anywhere else to go.” the boy at her door sheepishly asked.
he looked nice enough, definitely not serial killer vibes, and if he was going to be living across from her, why not?
she smiled warmly, nodding her head. “nice to meet you ted, i’m y/n! uh, i don’t really have a place for you to sit right now-”
“oh! i’m, just across, let me go get my chair and i’ll roll it on over.” ted cut her off, already turning around to head back to his room.
y/n peered out the door, noting how tidy ted’s side of the room seemed to be: his door also being held wide open. she also noted that there was only one other desk from what she could see from her area, noting that ted seemed to only have one other roommate. she only hoped that his roommate would be just as kind as ted.
she laughed as she watched him roll his chair over to her room, sitting on it and using his legs to walk it over. he had his macbook in his lap, and joined y/n at the table.
“so, are you always going to be keeping your door open?” he questioned, setting his macbook down on the part of the table that y/n had cleared for him.
“yeah, probably. i’d love to make friends, you know. with me being in this single room, as you can see, i’m already very solitary. i also am far too busy to always constantly be out, so i figured that if i kept my door open that someone might just stop by and finally say hi and: look! it already worked out!” y/n mused, looking over at ted and smiling, which the boy reflected.
ted shook his head in amusement, finding it hard to believe that he had already fallen for y/n’s “friend trap” as he dubbed in his head. “well then, y/n, i don’t mind being friends with you if it means i get to come over here and chill out. my roommate’s a random and we’ve only emailed each other and exchanged instagrams so i don’t know too much about him. some party hungry guy so i’m just hoping he doesn’t bring over too many girls.” he said, glancing over at y/n’s screen and staring at her jam-packed schedule. “holy shit, are you trying to kill yourself? why is your schedule so packed?” he questioned.
y/n groaned at the mention of her schedule, switching her attention from ted’s face to her screen. she sighed, “yeah, let’s not mention it. another reason why i can’t go out and socialize as much as i probably should. my major’s absolutely killer but the money is worth it.”
“what’s your major?” ted asked, pulling up his own google calendar that he had already finished setting up for the quarter.
“materials science and engineering, you?” she replied, fighting back a laugh at ted’s bewildered expression.
“holy shit, yeah ok i see what you mean. and i’m majoring in managerial economics. here, let’s compare schedules. we should go get dinner together.” ted pushed his macbook closer to hers, as the two scanned for when their free times lined up.
“looks like dinner at 7 everyday would be reasonable. ok, next question. pineapple on pizza?” y/n questioned, turning her attention back to ted, and letting out an exasperated gasp at ted’s disgusted expression.
“don’t fucking tell me you like that horrid combination.” ted groaned out, which earned him a loud “what the fuck are you talking about? it’s the most amazing pizza topping ever!” in response.
the two continued to converse in those: “let’s get to know each other!” icebreaker type questions. eventually, the two were doubled over in laughter, their laughs traveling out the rooms and down the halls for others to hear. they were sharing stories of their high schools back at home, and embarrassing stories about themselves in those high school years.
y/n was glad that ted lived across from her, the two hitting it off almost instantly. eventually, a knock was heard on the wall followed by someone clearing their throat. ted and y/n looked towards the doorway, ted standing up with a smile and walking over to the man while y/n stared at him as if she was seeing a ghost.
the man looked familiar, but y/n couldn’t put her finger on it. it was right on the tip of her tongue too, and it bothered her.
“hey! you’re cody right? oh, i see you’re already moved in. sorry i wasn’t there to greet you, i was hanging out with our neighbor across the hall, this is y/n! y/n, this is my roommate cody.” ted introduced the two after shaking cody’s hand. he stepped out of the way so cody and y/n could look at each other.
“hey, did we go to high school together?” cody and y/n’s rang out in sync, catching the two of them by surprise. this caused y/n to laugh, her mood already brightened from her recent conversation with ted.
“wrestling star, right?” y/n questioned, which earned a cocky smile from cody as he raised his arm up to flex his bicep.
“you already know it, sweetheart.” cody mused, laughing at the way y/n’s nose scrunched up in disgust - although he hoped she was simply faking it. he didn’t want to ruin his, well official, first impression on his and ted’s neighbors, especially since it seemed ted and y/n were already well on their way to become good friends. he brought his arm back down to his side, “and you’re that one smart girl that can sing really well, right?” cody shot back.
y/n nodded her head, a blush rising to her cheeks in embarrassment. “nice to actually get to meet you… cody?” she greeted, worrying that she got his name wrong. she smiled triumphantly when he nodded his head, confirming that she got his name right.
“same to you, y/n.” he smiled back. “now, i’d love to sit and talk but is it cool if i steal ted for a bit? we need to talk about some rules for our room.” cody asked, to which y/n nodded at. ted walked over to y/n’s desk, grabbing his macbook and sitting down on his chair. the two men grinned, waving farewell to y/n before walking off to their own room, or well cody walked back and ted rolled his way over to the room.
y/n watched as they closed the door behind them, cody waving once more before the door was shut. she smiled and leaned back in her chair, satisfied that she managed to meet not one, but two people on her first official day at college without counting the full day she had spent moving in and exploring the town with her parents.
just as she was about to turn her attention back to her macbook to continue preparing for her classes, she heard ted and cody’s door open. “let’s grab dinner tonight at 6! downtown or the dining commons, you decide!” she heard ted’s voice.
y/n yelled out a response, “dining commons!”
“see you then, sweetheart!” was yelled out in response before the door shut close once more.
cody. she thought ,as she rolled her eyes in amusement.
she wondered how the two men would get along. she could tell ted was outgoing, and knowing cody’s high school reputation, he mirrored that same eagerness to put himself out there. the two were different from her in that sense, considering y/n wouldn’t exactgly call herself introverted, but she was most definitely more reserved than others.
while speaking with ted, she knew that he would be joining many clubs for his major to branch out. his schedule was already full of a multitude of club meetings, interviews, socials, you name it. although she hoped that he’d swing by her room often.
as for cody, y/n could only imagine that the man would probably be out partying and breaking hearts on most nights, much like he did in high school if she remembers it correctly. she knew of cody because of the rumors being passed around campus, but never really knew him like that. now that she’s met him, she can confirm that cody is just as flirty as the rumors call it.
if those two boys were going to be her main friends during her years in college, then y/n was certain she’d have quite the interesting college life.

Unprompted Obsession ‘verse
I have two prompts in my inbox, but I am too tired to write today, so instead have this Obsession 'verse ficlet that I wrote over the past couple of days. :D
This follows pretty closely on the last ficlet (the one with Rhodey).
Most of the Obsession 'verse is here.
And the most recent one (which I haven't uploaded to the series yet) is here.
-
Pepper is alone in her office when a portal opens and Doctor Strange steps through.
His expression is neutral, perhaps even slightly pleasant, but despite that Pepper can’t help wondering if this is the fallout from James’ evening with Tony two days ago. Her heart rate picks up, but she puts on her best board meeting smile and turns away from her computer. “Doctor Strange. Has my assistant missed an appointment? You aren’t on my calendar.”
“I checked your calendar, you’re not busy,” he says, seating himself across the desk from her. His Cloak twitches out of the way to allow him to sit smoothly without his hands ever approaching it.
Pepper’s smile never falters. “I’m not Tony,” she says. “I don’t find the invasion of privacy charming, and I’d prefer it if you didn’t portal into my space without asking.”
Strange is silent for a moment. “Of course,” he says eventually. “My apologies. Would you prefer I return later? With an appointment, of course.”
“No, I’ll make an exception today, since we hadn’t established boundaries yet,” Pepper says. Her heart is still racing. “But I expect them to be respected in the future. What can I do for you?”
“Actually, I’m here to reassure you,” Strange says seriously.
“Me?” Pepper can’t help the small laugh that escapes her. “About what?”
“That I have no intention of interfering in your friendship with Tony. Or that of James’ Rhodes.”
Pepper’s professional smile cools a little. “And what makes you think I need reassurance on that front?”
“The other night, Colonel Rhodes told Tony he was worried I wouldn’t want Tony to see him,” Strange explains. “It seems likely that you share that worry, and while Tony has somewhat allayed Colonel Rhodes’ concern, I thought that you might prefer to hear it from the horses’ mouth. So to speak.”
He’s not wrong, but he’s also making Pepper wonder if Tony told him about that conversation or if he just listened in. Pepper considers Strange for a long moment. “I need more than that,” she says. “Tony is too important to me and you’re too much of an unknown quantity to just take your word for it.”
Strange nods like he expected that. “May I take it as a given that you accept that my devotion to Tony is genuine?” When Pepper hesitates, Strange’s mouth takes on a wry tilt. “Whether or not you consider it healthy.” Pepper waves for him to go on. Strange spreads his hands. “Let me put it this way: Tony’s friendships with you and Colonel Rhodes are fundamental to who he is as a person. I am very fond of who Tony is as a person, and therefore I am very protective of his friendships with you.”
Pepper studies Strange for a long moment. He meets her gaze steadily. Pepper’s always been a good judge of people, and she has to admit he seems sincere. That said, his explanation raises a whole host of other concerns. What would he do if he felt Tony’s fundamental friendships were being threatened? What would constitute a threat? What about relationships that he doesn’t consider fundamental? What about other things that could affect who Tony is as a person?
Unfortunately, those things are too broad or too speculative to address to any helpful degree. Pepper chooses the one that has kept her up a few nights instead: “You don’t find his past relationship with me threatening?”
Strange chuckles and folds his hands together. “Quite the contrary. The nature of your romance with Tony and the manner of its dissolution contributed significantly to his interest in my style of relationship.”
Pepper can’t help but wonder, uneasily, if she should feel guilty about that. She knows that she’s not responsible for Tony, that he’s a grown man capable of making his own choices, but she’s also spent a long time taking care of him, professional and personally, and the idea that she left him vulnerable to Strange’s obsession… “And what happens,” she asks aloud, “if Tony decides that he’s not interested in your style of relationship anymore?”
“I don’t think that’s likely.” There’s something oddly certain about the way Strange says that. The feeling is only heightened by the way he smiles. “And he’ll have you and Colonel Rhodes regardless, won’t he?” Strange pushes back his chair and stands.
“Of course,” Pepper says, automatically rising to her feet as well. She needs to follow up with some type of parting comment, but nothing seems appropriate. Strange’s professed purpose aside, she isn’t feeling particularly reassured. This wasn’t their first meeting, and even if it had been, it wasn’t exactly nice. Ultimately, Pepper settles for a generic, “Thank you for coming by.”
“I’ll be sure to make an appointment next time,” Strange says.
Pepper doesn’t feel at all as if she won anything there.
From the set of Strange’s shoulders and the look in his eye as he steps through another portal, he knows it.

It took just a few days for United Methodist delegates to remove a half-century’s worth of denominational bans on gay clergy and same-sex marriages. But when asked at a news conference about the lightning speed of the changes, the Rev. Effie McAvoy took a longer view. “Oh, it didn’t take days, honey,” she said. It took decades of activism for a change that was “so very healing,” said McAvoy, pastor of Shepherd of the Valley United Methodist Church in Hope, Rhode Island. A member of the Queer Delegate Caucus at last week’s UMC General Conference in Charlotte, she was grateful to be part of the historic moment. The reversals can be seen as marking the end of a half-century of epic battles and schisms over LGBTQ involvement — not only in the United Methodist Church but in U.S. mainline Protestant denominations overall. Those are the tall-steeple churches in myriad town squares and rural crossroads, traditionally “big-tent” and culturally mainstream congregations — some predating America’s independence. The nation’s largest Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Lutheran denominations have all now removed barriers to LGBTQ participation in the pulpit and at the altar. But this comes amid long-term declines in membership and influence. Surely there will be skirmishes to come. Individual congregations, and entire regions across the world, will sort out the implications. Controversies have grown among some conservative evangelical churches and colleges, which largely avoided past battles. But for mainline Protestants, last week’s General Conference looks like a landmark. It was a relatively quiet coda to what had been an almost annual scene on America’s religious calendar — impassioned showdowns at legislative assemblies of Protestant denominations, marked by protests, political maneuverings and earnest prayers.

Conner and Sarah fake dating for the holidays for x reason. But it becomes a little too real.
For the advent writing calendar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See, it started like this, Connor needed someone to go to the annual hospital charity event with him to get his father off of his back after the fallout with Robin and because Sarah was the only one single at the moment, Ava offered her up. It was one event, Sarah didn’t mind. In fact, the brunette probably owed him one. For everything he did for Robert. (The fact that he was a psychopath notwithstanding.) Then one event turned into two and two, three. You see where she was going with this. Until Sarah looked up and she was four months deep into fake dating Connor Rhodes.
Sarah didn’t mind though. She wasn’t trying to date right now anyway and Connor kept everyone who hit on her away because the whole hospital, except for a few friends, thought they were together. As evidenced by Dr. Bardovi’s subtle mean-girl act last week when Sarah and Connor had been eating lunch in the cafeteria.
So that brought them to now, where she was leaning against the nurse’s station, as she bickered with everyone’s favorite charge nurse.
“You worked last Christmas, Sarah.” Maggie shook her head as she sorted files and handed them off to various doctors and nurses. “You shouldn’t be on the roster to work this year. It’s a year-on, year-off basis. You know this.”
The brunette sighed and she continued writing her notes on a surgical psych evaluation. “It usually is. But I volunteer to work it every year so someone who actually celebrates it can be with their families.”
“Who actually celebrates it?” Maggie raised an incredulous eyebrow at her friend, “Sarah, you love Christmas! I’ve seen you the day after Thanksgiving practically with bells on and positively floating through the day! Even before Thanksgiving now that I think about it.”
Another holiday she offered to work every year.
But the charge nurse wasn’t wrong. Sarah loved Christmas and celebrated it all season long. Though admittedly with the Robert situation, it was certainly more subdued this year. But wasn’t it ironic that a person who absolutely adored Christmas didn’t have anyone to spend it with?
Sarah shrugged while a smile that looked more like a grimace overtook her lips. “I’m just saying, I don’t have anyone to spend the holiday with because I don’t speak to my mother, I haven’t since I told her I went into psychiatry over two years ago. Not that I ever spent it with her, to begin with. So I volunteer to work because what else am I going to do on that day? Why not give it to someone who has a family to spend it with?”
“But you could’ve had someone to spend it with if you told us. You know that if Will, Ethan, April, Ava, or I had known you were by yourself every Christmas, we would’ve offered for you to come with one of us to our celebrations.” Maggie argued, before the ED phone rang. An incoming trauma, which meant Connor rushed to meet the paramedics to take the case, before Maggie could assign it.
It had been a slow day for him and Connor didn't idle well. Her cheeks warmed when he caught her eye and winked as he ran. Her friend caught the movement and nodded in the direction of the surgeon. “What is he doing for Christmas?”
“Spending it with his dad and sister.” Sarah shrugged her shoulders. Maggie raised an eyebrow, “And you’re not spending it with him because?”
“I didn’t want to intrude. And you know why that’s not exactly an option anyway because he and I aren’t actually together.” Sarah said, because Maggie was one of those few who knew it was all fake.
Just like the charge nurse knew how Connor looked at Sarah when he thought the brunette wasn’t looking. It may have started out fake but Maggie was willing to bet that’s not how he felt now. The brunette continued shaking her head, “Besides, I’m fine. I celebrate during the month and that’s enough.”
It wasn’t fine though and it was sad that her friend thought or pretended like it was. The charge nurse pursed her lips together before she offered, “At least, come with me to my-”
“Maggie, no. Christmas is a family holiday and I don’t want any of your family to feel bad when I don’t have any gifts because you brought an extra person. I’m fine.”
[LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK]
She was in the cafeteria line with a thought of splurging on another peppermint mocha, when strong arms snaked around her waist and drew her in close. Sarah tensed briefly before the warm citrus scent filled her nose. Then she relaxed in his grasp.
“Getting lunch?” he mused quietly in her ear. She squirmed slightly at the fuzzy feeling that ran down her spine and made her shiver at his words.
“No, I was thinking about another peppermint mocha.” She told him and was met with a disapproving look, “What exactly have you eaten today?”
“Pro-”
“And don’t you say just those protein bars you’re so fond of. They aren’t big enough to sustain you all day.” Connor shook his head at her. Before the brunette could say anything, the line was moving and his hand was placed on the small of her back to propel her forwards gently.
After ordering her peppermint mocha, in addition to a coffee for Connor and two wraps, one vegetarian and the other chicken, (that Connor wouldn’t let her pay for and waved away any of her attempts of trying to pay him back)  fake boyfriend led them to a table. While she picked and munched on pieces of tortilla, Connor sipped on his own coffee and watched her.
“What?” Sarah finally asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Why didn’t you tell me you had nowhere to go for Christmas? That you work every year because of it and spend it by yourself?”
“Maggie,” she grumbled more to herself than anything as she shook her head. Then she shrugged and told him quietly, “Because I didn’t want to intrude on anyone. Or anybody’s Christmas.”
“Can you get out of it?” He asked, shaking his head.
“I’m not sure. I’d have to talk to Ms. Goodwin. Why?”
“Because I’m making plans and it would be better if you didn’t work that day.”
“Connor, I’m fine-”
“Sarah, you’re not spending another holiday by yourself. Especially not one you love so much. Not when you have me.”
But she didn’t have him, not really.

More mob boss Steve and stripper Tony!
Natasha has a dossier by the third of January, and she hands it to him after their morning meeting. Steve tries to take it, but she doesn’t let go. He sighs. He should have known better.
“I don’t care that you would rather go to a strip club than to a family party,” she says simply. “I don’t even care that you lied to keep everyone off your back.” Her expression doesn’t change, but her grip on the file tightens just a little. “I care that you put yourself in danger.”
Steve finally tugs the file free of her hand. “I acknowledge this. I won’t be sorry,” he replies, flipping it open to a picture of Tony’s smiling face.
Natasha crosses her arms, scowling at him. “Well,” she says when he pointedly doesn’t acknowledge her, mulish. “As long as you’re aware of how I feel.”
“You know I’m stupid,” Steve replies, eyes tracing over the MIT sweatshirt that Tony is practically swimming in.
“Yeah,” Natasha sighs, shaking her head in defeat, and turns to leave. “I’m going to go complain about you to Sam, and if Bucky finds out, that’s your problem.”
Steve waves at her without looking up. “Yeah, yeah, get out of here.” He gives the picture of Tony one last once-over, then flips open to the first page of Natasha’s research. He immediately pauses over the name.
Anthony Stark.
He remembers Howard Stark, vaguely. Business mogul. They’d shaken hands, once, when Steve had been hopeful and new. His wife had been lovely. They’d passed away in a drunk driving accident, the file says, and the drunk driver hadn’t even gotten a scratch. Anthony had been left orphaned at the tender age of nineteen. He should have had the whole world at his feet, but it had been swept out from under him instead. He’d barely graduated with his PhDs in engineering. He’d tried to take over his father’s company, but he’d been locked out of any controlling positions. “Too young,” he’d been told by his father’s business partner, by his board of directors. Shaken heads, wagged fingers. “Take a smaller role,” they said.
Anthony had tried to go to a different company, but somehow he’d been blackballed. Bullied, Steve thinks, turning more and more pages of the threats Stark Industries had rained down on their competitors. Anthony couldn’t work how he wanted there, but they’d be damned if they’d let him work somewhere else. Cameras in his face. Paparazzi asking him what it was like, being unable to get a job in his field. People after him for his money. A pressure cooker leading up to him packing a bag and disappearing from his home in Manhattan. A brief sighting in Philadelphia leaving his best friend’s family’s home. Then nothing.
Tony Carbonell had appeared in Brooklyn six months ago, working the ladies’ night at the strip club Steve frequented during holidays. He had eventually taken a more regular job at a gay club, but he preferred Steve’s on nights off, where he wouldn’t get pinched and propositioned. He's friendly with the girls there, who are fond of him in return, because he's charismatic, and sweet, and likes to learn new moves, and sometimes when he gets an especially big tip with one he gives part of it to the girl he learned from. They usually sneak the money back into his wallet.
He rents a room in a boarding house. Keeps to himself. Sends letters to a friend named James Rhodes--his college roommate. The only one who had ever cared for him besides his parents, it seems like. He has a relatively new friend, a Virginia Potts, but that seems to be all they are. He goes to coffee shops in his spare time and uses the WiFi for his old laptop. Natasha has never gotten close enough to see what for, and she was too afraid bugging it would cause the ancient thing to just become a brick.
He’s working the ladies night at the local club tonight.
Steve checks his calendar. Nothing he can’t reschedule. He picks up his phone to let May know.
“Did you fall in love at first sight with some twink at the strip club who wasn’t even working?!” Bucky barks as soon as the line picks up.
Steve puts the phone back in its cradle with a wince.
