8. Sunbathing (Aron/Sosiel, 493 words)

A spring breeze blew through the vineyard, rustling the grape vines. It would be several months before they were ready to harvest, but Aron liked to think he could already smell their rich bouquets as he closed his eyes and soaked in the moment.

If you’d told him just a few years ago that one day he’d be here, sunbathing in the grass of his very own vineyard, he wouldn't have believed you. He used to believe people like him didn't deserve such things, homes and jobs and people who loved him unconditionally. Time, faith, and a pair of gentle hands had taught him that was very much not the case.

Speaking of gentle hands…Aron opened his eyes at the sound of a door closing nearby. Sure enough, the only person who could've made this moment even more perfect was walking out of it, a soft smile lighting up his face.

“How’d it go with Yumillian?” Aron asked, sliding over so his husband could sit beside him.

“About the same as usual,” Sosiel said, giving a wry look to the bottle in his hands as he sat. “This one was supposedly made with the help of a transmutation spell. I am…very afraid of what the effects might be.”

Aron gave the bottle a considering glance, then said, “The Arendaes’ anniversary is coming up. How about we pawn it off on them?”

Sosiel laughed. “I do believe Ariadne is catching onto my tricks! But still, she does seem to like these abominations.” He gave one more glance to the label then set it aside.

They were silent for a moment before Aron asked, in a much quieter voice, “And Trever?”

“He’s doing better, but…” Sosiel wouldn’t meet his eyes, looking instead out at the rows and rows of vines that made up their property. “I think maybe we should see about bringing him here. I don’t think being alone is good for him.”

“Ah, so we’ll put him to work for us instead? I’m kidding!” Aron threw his hands up in mock surrender, though Sosiel’s annoyance was mild at best. Instead he chuckled.

“You really wouldn’t mind, then?”

“He’s your brother. Why would I mind?” He moved closer, so their foreheads were touching lightly. “It would hardly be becoming of me to deny you the chance to help someone else like you’ve helped me.”

“Well, it wouldn’t be quite the same way I helped you.”

“You know what I meant,” Aron said with a huff. His earlier train of thought returned, and he said in a small voice, “I’m still not quite sure I was worthy of your attention, to be honest.”

“Of course you were,” Sosiel said just as quietly. Aron met his gaze, first caught by the warmth, then by the sly smile. “Though…perhaps I should make that clear again. In a way reserved especially for you.”

Aron answered with a grin, laughing as his lips were captured by Sosiel’s.

Aron Beauregard: Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this the tale of the playground of death Beauregard: so a rich lady invites these kids to test out a new playground Beauregard: with all sorts of dangerous equipment Beauregard: and i don't mean ziplines

King: finally! getting back to our origins! King: see, that's the problem with playgrounds nowadays King: they're way too safe King: and yeah they need to bring back ziplines! King: those were awesome! Poe: they were pretty cool Barker: they fuckin ruled

King: so when you talk about a dangerous playground King: you mean she's bringing back woodchips right? King: getting rid of that dumb weird foam rubber Poe: oh i HATE that stuff King: see? that's exactly what i'm talking about

King: kids hate these new overly safe playgrounds! King: right, joe? Joe Hill: dad i really have no opinion on playground safety King: c'mon joe back me up King: it's boring right? Hill: dad i'm not a baby anymore! King: joe thinks they're boring Hill: daaaad!!

King: see, in my day, a couple skinned knees were the price of entry to a playground Beauregard: no i'm not talking about woodchips steve Beauregard: i mean a playground that can kill you King: King: so you mean like King: it DOES have a zipline???

Beauregard: no i mean- King: see, our local playground used to have this super cool zipline King: but they thought it was too dangerous, so they lowered it King: now your feet drag! King: they totally ruined it!

Beauregard: this is a playground that kills Beauregard: like its got slides with sawblades Beauregard: and there's spikes in the see saw Beauregard: and the sandbox is full of acid Beauregard: and the tetherball is on fire

Beauregard: and you know those weird spinny tic tac toe panel things? Beauregard: what if it was made of poison King: King: oh wow actually that might be too much of a recorrect there aron King: that does not sound up to code at all

Koontz: b-but the kids are ok right? Beauregard: Beauregard: Poe: aron just say they're ok Poe: for dean Beauregard: they're ok Koontz: oh good! Beauregard: [whispering] i'll tell you all the real story after he goes to bed

Dr. Ratio? It’s me, Stelle. (I think I’m Stelle #3?) I was scrolling and noticed some things fans were talking about regarding Aventurine, and I thought you might like hearing my thoughts.

They were talking about how he had no formal education or schooling, and didn’t seem to think he was very smart. For starters it’s interesting that they knew that he had no schooling, as this was new information to me. It’s weird how much these tumblr blogs know.

I don’t know about how your Aventurine’s intelligence, but my world’s Aventurine is in no way dumb. He’s a professional gambler, and works for the IPC. In order for him to be so rich while also gambling, wouldn’t you need to be really good at statistics and probability? And with multi-player gambling, there’s likely a lot of social intelligence needed. He seems to be really good at reading people and using their personalities to his advantage.

I’m always looking to help, so if you’d like any more information on me or my version of the world, let me know.

First of all, not having a formal education or schooling doesn't mean that you're not smart. That is a very narrow-minded misconception.

Everyone is smart in their own way. Education gives you the means to be smart more efficiently.

The opposite is also very much true: it's not because you got a formal education that you aren't an imbecile who doesn't know anything but open their mouth to spew nonsense and idiocy.

As for people here knowing very much personal information about all of us, I am currently making hypothesis about this. It seems that people from the planet Earth somehow got access to a strange game called 'Star Rail'. This game gave us access to said information, but also allowed them to take a look in our own universe. I also happen to have another theory about that, but I'll come back to it later.

As for... That damn IPC gambler...

Well, you said it just right. He's very smart.

He's very good at reading people and their body language, but also an adept of using your own words against yours. He's a master of manipulation and, somehow, is also very good at making predictions. He is smart enough to plan ahead and foresee multiple outcomes; and when it comes to gambling...

Well, this last point irks me very much.

He is very good at statistics and probability, but also at recklessly gambling his life away. He boasts about 'luck' and how it's always on his side, but it's not exactly what it is. It's rather certainty mixed with desperation. There is no luck involved, but misfortune certainly is.

Trusting others is also not in his nature, and that could mark his downfall. Not trusting even one person who could trust you back is a weakness in and of itself.

All I can say is that he should seriously take better care of himself; lest he one day makes a mistake and loses his life.

Well, at least, that is what our Aventurine is like. You tell me, if it comes close to yours or not.

When Kelas'ra was younger he was actually a "Dancer" in Radz-at-Han for about a year or so, give or take. He found himself alone in a large city (especially daunting as he'd never been in one before! All he'd known was his old home village and the Inn where he'd been run off to) and was quickly taken advantage of by Madame Lilavati's silver tongue and promises of riches beyond his wildest dreams.

She, of course, was drawn to his strange eye and suddenly the very thing he'd been hiding his whole life was now something he was supposed to promote, the silks and golds he was dressed in used to accentuate the reds of it. As expected, he drew sizeable crowds and Madame began to devote more resources to one of her newest cash cows, handing him over to her prized dancer, Aron, to be taught more intricate lessons, both in their line of work and how to survive in the fast paced underbelly of the city.

Despite it all he actually really enjoyed his time as a dancer, even with the more "private" showings he was forced to make, relishing the spotlight and spending time with his Mentor and the others during their downtime. It wasn't until a client went too far and Lilavati would not intervene that he began to contemplate running away, taking everything he had and vanishing into the night before a performance.

Nowadays, over 10 years later, he still remembers many of the dance steps and practices a little in his yard of a morning for stretching, not that he lets anybody see. Very little remains of "Alzadaal's Doll", just a few pieces of gold and gems and a secretive smile hidden behind bicoloured eyes.
