So you try not to be a dick, even if her son is a gold-standard pain in the ass. He’s good for three things: smells, noise, and reminding you how big Eddie must be by now.

The first It fic I read that made me go "holy shit, this is fantastic" and remains one of my all-timers (hence why its first in this list). Really fun and unique outsider POV from Eddie's estranged gay dad, and tells a very sweet story mostly through dialogue. Young adult Eddie and Richie are very cute.

There was Richie’s soppy campaign of making cow eyes at the back of Eddie’s head as he passed, gently pressing Betty for details about his personal life (“I don’t think he has one. He had this awful fiancé a few years ago, but we’re all glad that’s over”), and chasing the incomparable high of a quiet, muttered “Thanks, Rich” whenever Richie picks something up for him from the copier.

Richie is a wannabe stand-up comic daylighting as the receptionist at Eddie's office. Eddie is a tightly-wound corporate asshole. They are both disasters. Or: five times Richie watched Eddie and one that Eddie watched him back.

I really enjoy workplace dramas and this one satisfied the itch so well. So many good scenes and dialogue, this author characterizes them in a way that really works for me. The perfect read-in-an-afternoon fic.

Stan fixes him with one of those looks of his, the one where he can see his every thought as if it were written on his face. “That’s not true, Trashmouth.”

Alternatively: We all know Richie gets caught in the Deadlights, but do we really know what happens after?

This one is fucking weird in a way that I absolutely adore. Kind of like a sci-fi novel in that it requires you to pay attention to figure out what the fuck is going on but its so good and worth it. The MCD is Stan, not Eddie, and the last couple chapters are actually a very normal domestic Eddie lives AU. One of the first reddie artworks I made was fanart for a scene from this fic that I really enjoy.

What mood were you looking for?” A nervous lump grew in Eddie's throat. He threw back his drink to get rid of it.

Hand wrapped around the glass he’d just slammed back onto the bar, he said, “The mood that gets me leaving with a schlubby forty-something.”

Pre-chapter two, Eddie and Richie meet and don't remember each other, but have an instant connection anyway...

This one is just... so fucking good. Decently long without ever feeling like it's dragging. Part 1 is them developing their totally-casual-I-swear relationship, which blows up right when Mike calls them back to Derry. Part 2 is them navigating both killing a nightmare clown demon and the awkwardness between them. Also everybody lives! So that's nice.

I LOVE THIS ONE SOOO FUCKING MUCH. I urge you to consider this as a rec for this author as well, as they have a bunch of other reddie fics I think are fantastic. I have a weakness for any reddie fic that lets them be just a little mean to each other. As a treat. (Also the podfic is very well done, you should check that out too.)

In honor of it being pride month and me being gay here are losers head canons that align with either mine or my friends identities/experiences :P

Starting off strong with genderqueer Stan. Stan was like I’m not a man or a woman but I do not have the decisiveness to know anything other than that (cause same)

Bill, Beverly, and Richie are all bisexual and they fight over the title of bi disaster of the friend group

Mike is ace but constantly questions himself because he knows that a asexuality is a spectrum so he’ll at anytime be like nope sex still doesn’t seem right thanks

Did Eddie buy a pride flag? Yes. Did he also hide said pride flag under his bed an entire year so his mom didn’t find out about his closeted ass? Yes again

Bev rates clothing stores pride collections and takes minimum one loser with her to model clothes for her review posts. (+when Richie tags along he without fail buys the tackiest clothing item in the collection)

Ben didn’t realize he liked individuals other than women until he was out of college so he thought it would be impossible to find any guy who would like him since he’d only ever been with girls. (+this proves to be untrue seeing as he’s hot, romantic, and successful, he pulls)

Richie was Stan’s gay awakening (I head canon they’re pan but yk) and they will forever be ashamed of this

Thank you for asking! 😘 It took me a while to answer bc I needed to be in the right headspace, but here we go!

Eddie:

Since we are strictly talking about miniseries Eddie, I could happily leave the 'done dirty by the fans' unmarked, because I've seen the miniseries fans treat my boy well and not twist his character into unrecognizable mess. However, I do feel like he was done dirty by the creators and has a lot of wasted potential. If it weren't for Dennis Christopher who chose to depict Eddie the way he did, we wouldn't have even that amount of gay representation when it comes to him (and his relationship with Richie). There are also other aspects of him I wish were addressed more... but I do understand that when it's only a two part miniseries we're talking about and there are several other main characters involved, a very deep analysis of his character was simply not possible.

That being said, I have thought about Eddie, his traumas, his characterization, what made him act the way he did and his motivations a lot... Probably way more than is even healthy. 😅 (Also as someone who grew up with an overprotective and overbearing mother who never let me do anything or go anywhere when I was a child/teen... where are those adoption papers?! I know my mom's nowhere near what Eddie's mom is like, but that shit leaves a mark and I know it and I want him protected!)

Also, I wanna point out that I usually never go looking for songs about my fictional faves because I am simply not the kind of person who makes or even listens to character playlists, but with Eddie I have discovered songs that I think fit him (and/or Reddie) without even trying so... that's why I marked that one here as well.

Richie:

Ah, miniseries Richie. My disaster son. 💖 So much is wrong with him, both in good and bad (Like what's with all the failed marriages? How many times you've been married again, Richie? 4? 5? Please go to therapy!) , and he also gets to share the best character title with Eddie because I love them both SO MUCH but in very different ways and it is impossible to choose which one of them I like more.

Again, done dirty by the creators because I wanted more of him, but luckily Harry Anderson played the adult character really well and really gave him soul I think? And young Richie is adorable as well. I really love the whole "loudmouthed little shit who doesn't know when to quit but has so much love and loyalty for his friends" character type. We do get to see this, we get to see Richie's loyalty and goodness luckily... but I would've loved to see it even more, because I love him. Oh yeah, and he got done dirty by the ending as well because what the hell, the fact that he went into movie business with a costar who "looks exactly like Eddie Kaspbrak" like... That is the saddest shit ever and makes me wanna cry! NO!

And again, like with Eddie, I could easily leave the 'done dirty by the fans' unmarked because all the shitty/bad takes I have seen about miniseries Richie have been said by some fans who didn't really even like the miniseries in the first place. Actual miniseries fans however mostly seem to have a great understanding of his character.

But also at the same time... I am a bit protective of him in the sense of being a little like "No, none of you other fans truly understand Richie the way I do. I know him personally. Nobody else does." 😂

i suspect kaye adams and james bye may be disasters but i could be wrong. maybe james will be the out of left field amazing one

richie anderson is gay and he's said he'll dance with a man so i'm going to assume he'll be with johannes but maybe it'll be another guy

i think jayde adams is our best bet currently of having a second same-sex pairing but i'm not sure which dancer it would be with or if the bbc is ready to do that

Useful intro to the history of techno/nostalgia fest for first-gen ravers

A documentary doesn’t always need a mission statement – it can simply be a story well told – but it can help keep things focused. GSGEDM is here to let you know electronic dance music didn’t start with white European dudes like Calvin Harris and David Guetta and consequently to give the ‘true’ pioneers of techno their due.

In this version of the story, it all starts in the early 1980s with three black guys at a largely white high school in Belleville, Michigan, pop. 3,991. Deep in the sticks, it was where their mothers had whisked them to protect them from Detroit’s urban disaster. So here we have the self-assured Juan Atkins, mostly interviewed in ridiculous sunglasses, chatty Derrick May and solid and sensible Kevin Saunderson. 

By the time of a scene-defining photoshoot for the British magazine Record Mirror in 1988, there were three others, although they were never a true collective. It’s soon apparent that Blake Baxter – the only one with pop star/frontman potential – was always the odd man out.

For someone like me who a teenager in the UK at the time, there’s something jarring when the photographer is identified as Norman Anderson, because for us he will always be Normski, the presenter of BBC Two’s Dance Energy back in the early 1990s. 

Talking of which, one of the fascinating things here is the footage of the studio audience dancing to Atkins’ early Cybotron singles on a local Detroit TV black pop show – seemingly nobody deemed this stuff too weird…

As an introduction to this slice of music history, I think this works. As a collection of Proustian triggers – Normski! knowing which magazine was being discussed by the page design! – this also worked for me even though other than Saunderson’s glorious UK hits (songs rather than tracks) as Inner City, this stuff wasn’t really my bag.

But I also found it quite frustrating – so much is brought up and then not explained or explored. That includes incidents within the film – I feel there’s more to the Baxter-May falling-out than I understand, at least. And presumably we’d be past the statute of limitations on stolen drum machines?

Beyond that, though, I wanted to know more about the relationship between the gay and straight club scenes: could straight dudes DJ at gay nights, for instance? And considering how much the Detroit guys talk about what they learned at the Paradise Garage in New York and the Warehouse in Chicago, was techno truly a separate genre or was it just a marketing angle conjured up with the British dude we meet here? 

On the race issue, the film presents the case for and against Richie Hawtin, a big techno star who is white and came from Windsor, just across the border from in Canada. Hawtin is interviewed extensively and argues he paid his dues. Others hint otherwise, but it’s left unresolved.

The appropriation issue is introduced with the oft-used clips of an electrifying Little Richard and a soporific Pat Boone singing their respective versions of Tutti Frutti. But if you’re at a rave or at a superclub, how do you identify the ethnic origin of the maker of the instrumental you are dancing to? I’m not for a second saying that racism isn’t a factor, just that what happened had to work differently than how it had with rock’n’roll, and that mechanism is not uncovered by this film…

One final quibble: very late in proceedings the film mentions that Derrick May – probably the person who gets the most speaking time in GSGEDM – has been accused of sexual assault by four women, which he denies. This should have been brought up earlier - the film feels complicit holding this information back from us.

hc that richie likes to just go into random classes at his college for fun bc he gets bored during his breaks in between his classes

one day he’s in this statistics class and he’s not really vibing with it so he’s planning to leave during the 5 min break but then the really cute guy who is sitting beside him turns to richie and says “hey, i just transferred into this class but since it’s already the second week i’m pretty lost, do you mind explaining this concept to me?”

and because the guy is really fucking cute, instead of making up an excuse, saying that he also just transferred into the class or that he doesn’t really understand the concept either, he goes into gay panic and he agrees and with what he’s learned in the past hour of lectures he attempts to teach this guy statistics

meanwhile eddie is pretty stressed at how lost he is in this class, but hey at least it gave him an excuse to talk to the cute guy sitting beside him
