I got tagged for WIP Whenever by @the-lastcall so here's a bit that I wrote up for Rescuing Willow. An excuse to do the Big Team Movie Rescue thing with Fallout 76 friends XD

Beckett look around at them all. “So that’s the situation,” he said. “That… thing, has him. I know you’ve all worked with Willow before, and you’re his friends. I know it could be dangerous to do this. Can I ask you to get him out of there?”

Because Beckett couldn’t. Certainly not by himself, but there was a reason he was asking them to do it. Will Dane, Ricky G, that new guy Cal, Max, Captain Eberhardt - they did this kind of thing regularly, fighting the monsters of Appalachia, both human and inhuman. They’d gone to the Pitt, some of them. Others took on the big nasties down at the Bog.

Eberhardt shifted from leaning against the wall. “If what you say is true,” she said, “that place’ll be crawling with all kinds of robots. Maybe radiation, too.”

Beckett nodded. “Yeah. I figure that.”

“And he went in there willingly, didn’t he?”

This was the tough part. “I think so,” Beckett said. “But I don’t know that he understood what he was doing.”

Max’s expression said what he thought of that.

Talks in the Dark

"What'd you want to be when you grew up?"

The question comes out of the blue, a complete non sequitur to the last words they'd spoken (which had been more breathless pants than an actual conversation), but Kate just laughs, reaching back for his hand and bringing it around her body to bring his chest flush with her back.

"When you were really little, I mean," he continues, dusting a kiss to the skin at the back of her neck. "I know you told me once that when you were in college you were pre-law, and then you became the greatest detective in the world, but when you were your little, tiny, feisty baby Beckett self, what'd you want to be?"

Kate strokes her fingertips over the back of his hand, using the gentle rhythm to help herself think. She knows she'd wanted to be something different back then, all kids did even if it was something absolutely absurd, but she can't for the life of her remember what it was.

"I really don't know," she says. "I guess maybe I always kind of wanted to be like my mom."

She feels him smile against her skin, shivering when he brushes his stubble along her shoulder.

"I could see that," he agrees. "You do stick to your guns when you know what you want."

Kate exhales, clutching his hand a little tighter. She's trying not to be so rigid, but she knows he's seen that side of her too often.

"My dad used to joke that 'stubborn' should have been my middle name."

Castle chuckles. "Katherine Stubborn Beckett; it does have a ring to it."

She smiles. "Not the worst name in the world, anyway."

He hums.

"Come to think of it, though, I feel like I did once tell my parents I wanted to be a groundskeeper in a cemetery after we went to a funeral."

Castle's head tilts on the pillow. "I need to know. Tell me everything. How did you go from lawyer to groundskeeper in a cemetery, and back to lawyer?"

"I remember seeing the care they took in making sure the graves looked nice, and it was quiet and peaceful there."

"And you didn't think, even for a second that it might be haunted?"

She snorts. "Not even a little bit."

"Party pooper."

Kate hums. "What about you? What'd you want to be before little Ricky Castle decided the life of a writer was for him?"

Castle's fingers twitch in hers. "Oh, I definitely wanted to be a ghostbuster who patrolled a cemetery. Zap a few poltergeists with my proton pack before they can terrorize people? The best."

She doesn't believe it for a second, but she laughs anyway, giving him that.

"And then I'd fall in love with an unbelievably, unrealistically sexy cemetery groundskeeper and we'd be together forever, making sure the army of the undead never rose to terrorize the city."

Kate snorts. "No really, Castle. What'd you want to be?"

He exhales. "A journalist, I think. Television, print, either. I wanted to report facts to people and keep them up to date about what was going on in the world. I used to sit Mother down and force her to watch my nightly news reports. Which I wrote myself about events I almost completely made up."

His lips pucker against her skin. "It turns out fiction is much more fun."

Kate laughs. "Now that I believe."

Behind her, Castle hums.

"I am glad to know that about you, though," she adds. Pulling her hand out of his grip, her fingers trail down his arm, making soothing strokes. "Thanks for telling me."

His foot brushes hers. "Thanks for telling me about yours, too. You would make a pretty hot groundskeeper, you know."

Laughter bubbles in her chest. "Thanks, Castle," she drawls. "I'll keep that in mind if I ever decide to change jobs."

He grins against her skin. "Good."

Quiet settles, blanketing them in warmth. Kate sinks deeper into the mattress, allowing herself to drift. She's on the cusp of sleep when she hears her name again.

"Mmm?"

"I love you."

A smile works its way over her lips. "I know."

He chuckles, pulling her closer, rearranging the tangle of limbs they've created until they're both comfortable.

"Hey Cas'le?" she says a second later, peeking an eye open and twisting her head as far as she can. She can't see him, but it's the thought that counts.

"Yeah?"

"I love you, too."

A/N: There's a mild spoiler for the Nikki Heat books in this story; it's something that is established pretty early on, and I don't think it's a big deal in terms of what it "spoils," but I am bananas about avoiding spoilers, so I warn because I love.

There’s an imaginary boyfriend problem in town. Well. It’s even more local than that. There’s an imaginary boyfriend problem in his head, and it’s not a lascivious teenage boy, or even a bevy of lascivious teenage boys, if in fact bevy is a collective noun one can apply to lascivious teenage boys. He should know whether or not it is—words and their various uses are his stock in trade—but he does not at the moment. The imaginary boyfriend infestation has driven this and other vital knowledge right out of his head. 

He wishes the imaginary boyfriend were a teenager, driven mad with lascivious thoughts by the sight of his daughter in her borrowed—and let’s face it, fairly modest, despite his paternal freakout—cheerleading outfit. Okay, he almost wishes it were a lascivious teenager, but reasonably high neckline and unremarkable hemline aside, he is not quite there. Even with an imaginary boyfriend living in his head, rent free, he is not quite texting all the lascivious teenage boys he knows to invite them over to appreciate his daughter’s skill with pom pons. 

The imaginary boyfriend is also not the hypothetical boyfriend—the all-but-certainly- hypothetical boyfriend whom she would bring nowhere near the precinct if he existed. That is not the imaginary boyfriend in question. The hypothetical boyfriend is no concern of his, because come on: if he existed, she would totally bring him around the precinct. For the distinct pleasure of torturing him? She would absolutely risk any amount of teasing, any number of wolf whistles, anything at all the boys and the rest of the precinct could dream up for that. 

So he’s not worried about the hypothetical boyfriend suddenly materializing. He is worried about the imaginary boyfriend—the one whose existence is completely and totally his fault. He is, not to put too fine a point on it, worried about Don, Nikki Heat’s trainer-with-benefits. He is worried about a man who is entirely the product of his own imagination. A rather unimpressive imagination, in this case. 

He remembers creating Don in an adolescent moment when he felt he had to make good on his spur-of-the-moment insistence that Nikki was kinda slutty. Or maybe it was in a fit of pique after she went on and on about Nikki Heat being a stripper name. It could have been in a prolonged bout of frustration, because he couldn’t figure her out at all after that first blinding insight about loss and an unsolved murder. Even with a front-row seat to her kiss with Sorenson and the post-Sorenson date she may or may not have really had, he could not at all get a handle on her personal life.

Truthfully, he can’t really remember exactly how Don came to be, and now he’s stuck with him. He’s stuck with this embarrassment of a character who illuminates almost exactly nothing about Nikki Heat: She’s an adult woman who has occasional casual sex and that is supposed to be . . . what? Edgy? Complicated? 

The adolescent moment explanation is not especially compelling, particularly in light of the recently revealed, titillating insights Nikki’s real-world counterpart seems to have into the ins and outs, as it were, of Dungeon Alley, and he does not believe for a second that she acquired those insights working Vice. He has more faith in the non-hypothetical existence of the hypothetical boyfriend than he has in that hastily assembled explanation. 

He’d very much like to have that problem in town. He would enthusiastically make up the guest-room bed in his head for the problem of how Kate Beckett has come by her ability to recognize custom cuffs and her casual familiarity with the layout of the average sex dungeon. But there’s no room at the inn. 

He is stuck with Don, living the rent-free life in his head, and what is with that guy anyway? He’s content to occasionally jump in to Nikki’s bed and leave it at that. Of all the unbelievable things he’s asked his readers to believe over two decades and upwards of twenty novels, that just takes the cake.  The man is a cardboard cut-out who aspires to two-dimensionality. He exists solely to  . . . what? Assure the audience that Nikki isn’t some ice queen? To convince them that she is an ice queen until Rook comes along and ignites her innermost fires?

That last rhetorical question lands with a bitterly non-rhetorical thunk. Don’s origins were somewhere in that particular neighborhood. He needed an obstacle. He needed Nikki to have some non-Rook outlet so that she wasn’t, from the very beginning of the first book, tossing Rook roughly on to the hood of her undercover and ravishing him openly on the streets of New York. 

But Don the imaginary  boyfriend is an embarrassing oversimplification, even on that clunky, superficial level. He is a cringe-worthy mess. He wouldn’t know a double cross lap stitch from . . . some other kind of second-rate, mass-produced stitch. He couldn’t MapQuest his way to Dungeon Alley, and he has no idea whether or not Nikki prefers slippery to sticky. 

Don the imaginary boyfriend is wholly unworthy of such esoteric knowledge. The trouble is, the more he gets to know Nikki—the more he gets to know her—he’s not sure who is worthy, let alone ready for her. 

He’s not sure there’s a man alive—or imagined—who is, but he’d like to find out. 

A/N: This is a stinky one; I really wish my schedule allowed for me to write one every night, rather than so sporadically, but I am trying to get back to at least a few per week. There's just more shaking the rust off involved.

After Party (Time-Honored Tradition verse)

 He hadn't been sure at first about skipping prom, but he's a believer now.

 Sure, they'd gotten dressed up – and oh, does Kate look amazing in her strapless dress and half-tied converses – and they'd gone to dinner with their friends, but when the time came to go to the dance, he and Kate had made their exit, slipping back into Gerry's car (thank goodness the man and his mother had parted on good terms) and grinning at each other as the others jumped into their limo and drove away.

 "Well, Ms. Beckett," he had asked, reaching over to take her hand and lift her knuckles to his lips. "Where would you like to go for the rest of our evening?"

 She'd had a plan for the whole night but she hadn't wanted to share it until then.

 "So," Kate drawls from her spot atop his grandmother's radio, "how was your prom night, Ricky?"

 Rick Rodgers grins, crossing the living room with their drinks in his hands. Kate leans back, lifting her chin.

 "Is it everything you'd hoped it would be?" she adds, taking the glass from him.

 He dips his head before she can take a sip, brushing his lips over hers. "A poetry slam where you got up and performed? It was awesome."

 "Yeah?" she asks, sounding almost bashful.

 "Oh yeah," he says, pressing another kiss to her mouth. "And this might be the best after party ever. All we need is to get settled and enjoy our time alone here at Chez Rodgers."

 "You picked a movie?" She pecks back, grinning at his nod. "I'll get changed."

 "I left my sweatshirt on the bed."

 Kate laughs, jumping down from the radio and ducking under his arm toward his bedroom.

 Rick runs into the kitchen, grabbing the popcorn he'd started before going to change and returning to the living room. He flops down on the couch, propping his feet on the coffee table as he waits for his girlfriend to return from getting comfortable.

 Yeah, it's been a good night.

🌹 How easy is it for them to connect with others and make friends? On the flip side how easy is it for them to make an enemy of someone? Are they the kind of person who hangs around the food table at a party and never talks to anyone or are they the type who can talk to anyone?

Seth remained reclusive after his embrace, he doesn't go out of his way to make friends with other kindred but he can carry a conversation when there's an opportunity. Most of the time he is simply disregarded by kindred, seen as Beckett's student he is being left out of the conversation until Beckett invites him into it. (One time even being addressed as Beckett's ghoul, even though the kindred clearly knew better.) However, despite that, Seth is the type that can talk for hours on end with people he trusts.

📙 What kind of subjects (of conversation, of discussion, in school or whatever) does your OC find interesting or engaging or that they can talk for hours about? What kind of stuff do they just find fun?

Seth is fascinated by medicine, when he was attending the university he was especially interested in illnesses and their effects on human bodies. Now with the knowledge of the whole supernatural underworld, this curiosity extended to curses and all sorts of ill-wishes that come to fruition with any form of magic. As well as, due to his main form of 'work' being archeology while accompanying Beckett practically everywhere he goes, he also picked up that, he likes learning about the Kindred culture (and seeing that proud look on Beckett's face when Seth manages to notice something faster than he does). He still enjoys walking around at night, taking walks through cities they stay in, and feeling just normal like he did when he was alive once in a while.

⭐ What is your OC afraid of? Any crippling phobias or some such? How do they act when scared and what helps them calm down? Does anyone ever find your OC scary? Why?

Just like he was in life, after being embraced he is afraid of loneliness, he tried to fit in with the Camarilla, then Anarchs, then the Pyramid with other Tremere but something was always off and that feeling was always stuck in the back of his head that he didn't belong, didn't fit in, always an outcast. He recognizes himself as a weaker vampire, constantly being in presence of such a powerful kindred as Beckett. He is wary of other kindred, especially if he knows they have a certain reputation, i.e. a strong dislike for his clan. Seth gets jumpy when he's scared. He gets very irritable and almost paranoid. What helps him the most is either finding a small space for himself to calm down or, most effectively, having Beckett by his side, you can hardly feel afraid when you have a man with the experience of your lifetime multiplied by 10 watching your back.

🌸 What does your OC’s voice sound like? Their laugh? Are they good at singing? Do they have an accent?

Some time ago I was looking for a song for an animation I wanted to make, and felt like this voice matches Seth quite well. It's from Ricky Rosen's yt but I found out the video has been deleted so I'll link his channel.

I imagine his voice to still sound pretty young, matching his appearance. He's in the middle-higher range, depending on how much emotion he expresses when talking (and he tends to get hysterical often). His laugh is the type that just rips out of his chest, it's bubbly loud and infectious. The one you turn your head to to see what you're missing out on. Despite the example being a song lol I don't imagine Seth can sing really, his voice is sweet but he can't control it to carry a tune for anything else other than some soft/slow songs
