look, Venus has waited a quarter of a century, she earned this

i think... what tickles me most about Venus after coming back to TMNT fandom via Rise, is that from what I can see (on tumblr), the kids love her. they love her and make versions of her in the series that came after the 90s. i look at their bios, some weren’t even born when Next Mutation was airing. (and as far as I can tell, Next Mutation didn’t really get much syndicated airtime if any) ...and they still love her. hurt me in my old little heartguts. it’s mostly my generation of tmnt fans who express distaste for her... but the new fans, they love her, they include her in their aus, they make a place for her in their childhood series. hoo h oo giv give me a moment..

if I could pop back into 1998 and tell little 13 year old snackugaki that Venus would be back, I would. all I had were Trini Kwan and Venus de Milo (not ONLY them, just for the purpose of this post) as a fighty, angry little girl. 

all my childhood idols who could fight were calm, level-headed characters who could just happen to throw a villain through a wall if they really needed to. if it wasn’t for them who knows where baby snacku fite meh! gaki would be today. going up against Rhonda Rousey for the championship belt idk, who can accurately estimate the magnitude of childhood influences, not this bitch

“If Big Mama's guard is ever revealed to be the turtles' sister, I seriously hope it's Jennika or an entirely different character, not Venus, because from what the Next Mutation series portrayed her, she was considered the guy's sister because she was "separated from the pack", but she was also passed as a love interest too (mostly to Raph and Leo), which is VERY strange and incest coded. If it HAS to be Venus, then I think they should even make her their sister ALL THE WAY, or rewrite her entire backstory to the point where she’s not considered their sister at all anymore. My Rise! Venus and Jennika

The girlies<333 @roninreverie is the origin of the big brain idea of Venus getting adopted by Grandpa Sho and Jennika Big Mama's Assistant and the mystic abilities

I chose Kemp Ridley turtle for Venus because I liked how similar its color scheme was to idw Venus, I didn't realize until looking at roninreverie's Venus that she was the same turtle species so I tried making Jennika a different one by making a list of semi-aquatic turtles (to reference how the fandom like to make BM's assistant a slider like Leo) then narrowing that list down to 7(because I had 7 sea turtles to choose from for Venus) then using a random name picker to narrow it down to 3 and chose from there

And then

I ended up choosing a painted turtle.

THE SAME SPECIES AS RONINREVERIE'S

I DIDN'T RELAIZE TILL I WAS TRYING TO DECIDE COLOR PALLETTE FOR HER AND LOOKING AT RONINREVERIE'S FOR INSPO AND READ HER REF SHEET AGAIN AUGH

I was in too deep to change it tho, it was just written in the stars Rise! Jennika is to be a painted turtle I guess (this reminds of when I shipped Mikey with my spider guy oc and discovered MilesxMikey a few days later)

Anyways

Kimie Plautilla Hamato

The eldest of the turtles

Same age as April

Uses her classic weapon of tessen

Shorty but built like a brick shithouse

Girly girl (affectionate)

I didn't mean to give her gyaru like makeup but now that I think about it I think I think she'd love that kind of subculture

Her cloaking brooch form looks like a mix of Yoshi and Atsuko, which if Sho had been alive to see would really fuck him up me thinks

Her mystic ability is water bending!

She's also a really strong martial artist, had a pilgrimage to China to learn Kung Fu (also tie in to prev incarnations being raised Chinese)

While she grew up knowing Hamato traditions and Hamato ninpō, she stopped practicing when Grandpa Sho passed away out of fear she wouldn't/would contact his spirit and that's when she went on a warrior's pilgrimage to China

Hence why she was unaware of her brother's and Splinter's existence and Shredder's defeat

Can lift Raph in one hand

Wears her ninja mask occasionally, because she sometimes wacks herself in the face with the braid but refuses to get rid of it

Somehow both the most clumsy and graceful of the turtles

Has confused/complicated feelings about Splinter, he's technically her dad but also the grandson that shirked his duties for "Hollywood Land" and causd great pain to her beloved Grandpa Sho

But also was kidnapped and then mutated and had to raise 4 baby mutants on his own so who's to say if he would have stayed away forever or tried to reach out

She grew up with an image of Yoshi that would have been like a wayward big brother or cousin to her

And then it turns out that that's her dad which is a big Hm. moment for her

Míng Huì "Artemisia" Hamato

Older than Raph but younger than the elder sisters of the Hamato Clan

Assassin and Big Mama's Assistant

She teaches Elisabetta poisons

Uses tekkō-kagi and senbon

Not a fan of the ninja masks and only wore it because of a x5 puppy dog eyes from her siblings

Her human form looks like a mix of Karai and Atsuko, and I have her 12 Karai's hair style because it is a Look

Similar to a dad not wanting a pet and then becoming obsessed with it, she wasn't super into being a family with the turtles at first but is now ride or die for them that she hides under her bad girl attitude

Mikey knows

Donnie looks up to her the most, for he too holds the bad boy image (lies)

Her existence was a big driving force for Big Mama's redemption arc like how Mikey was for Draxum and Kimie for Sho(although I don't think he really needed one)

She thinks of Splinter more as her mom's ex(?) Boyfriend than her dad. And the less said about Draxum the better, her and Leo have roast sessions about him

Golden web mystic ( think spiderman)

Like a cat in how she bonds with her family, very private and not very social but she enjoys simply spending time in their presence with no interaction

While Kimie makes Plautilla her middle name like how the boys have their colors/Japanese names as middle names Míng Huì views Artemisia as her nickname rather than a new name hence the quotations

Speaking of their artist's names; they picked them out as a sort of bonding activity with the boys+April, to get them closer as siblings.

Plautilla's favorite nephew is Eijirou as they both rock tessen and are heavy hitters, tanks and gentle souls; while Artemisia doesn't actually really have a favorite and likes her nieces and nephews equally, although she spends the most time with Sandro and Elise because they spend the most time with Big Mama out of the next gen kids and she has the most things in common with those two.

Part 12 Un-redeems your Draxum

Lol I thought it would be funny if Draxum began to make one or two, slow tentative steps to redemption because of Donnie, and he would’ve continued on if not for *spoiler* (the empyrean).

Three’s thoughts kinda bounce around here, so I just wanted to clarify—that’s Venus in the tank at the end. She was originally mutated with the brothers but was so sickly that Draxum spent years keeping her suspended in a coma. Her design is inspired by the IDW Venus. As he got older, Three was forced into replacing the diseased parts of her with his tech. She’s almost more machine than turtle.

i know the tags are hateful and I would never have fit this next bit in them so:

the painful Wade-Giles translation (pinyin gang sends its regards) aside, the “měi” (with a caron) character was written with the hanzi for beautiful but (despite the different tones and most regular people don’t include accent marks when transcribing) “mei” could also be with an acute,”méi” 梅 plum.

Plum as in part of the 3 Friends of Winter (plum, pine, bamboo); plum as in a symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity, a common lunar new year motif also.

tl;dr she may not have many iterations but it’s starting and my baby deserves after a 25 year winter.

On Ashe Jacobson’s Twitter there’s a Rise animatic that uses audio from Park and Rec as a slight joke about how Ben Schwartz worked on both shows

Leo: I’m going to tell you something that I once heard from a very, very smart woman named Kim

Donnie: The lady who waxes you?

And something fun that was in the replies is that there was actually a reference to Venus

I found the reference to Venus kind of funny because if you take the theory that the Rise version of Venus is Big Mama’s Assistant then Leo talking about Venus then same way Jean Ralphio talks about his sister (calling them ‘the worst’) then that paints a picture of Leo holding a grudge against Venus for working with Big Mama similar to how he holds a grudge against Draxum for throwing him off a roof
