Kibbe Body Types and Celebrities: a Beginner's Guide
Tumblr media
(Credit to: Aly Art)
David Kibbe, author of Metamorphosis, drew upon previous fashion systems to create his own Kibbe Body System, homing in on the yin-yang balance of the body and boiling his method down to the bare bones-- literally-- of the overall frame: length, width, height, and softness. Then, he divided each feature into two main categories:  the yin softness or the yang structure. The more “structure” a frame had, the more “visual weight” it presented; and the more “softness” it had, the less “visual weight” it presented.
At first, Kibbe sorted each frame into five main types with two additional subtypes. However, his system recently caught on fire with popularity, leading to vast misinterpretations or reinterpretations through over analysis and hyper fixation. Because of this, David updated his system (and is reworking on an updated version of his book), resifting his old designs into a simpler order.
This analysis will be working from the information I've gleaned mostly from Aly Art's channel here. She is incredible at stripping down each concept to its basics-- highly recommend. I also used Merriam Style’s channel for her body type test (here), which is an even more stripped version of Kibbe’s original body type quiz. (Aly's version of the quiz is here.)
**Note**: Kibbe Body Types are separate from the actual weight of an individual; and do not change with bodily fluctuations, changes, or even age. Example: Romantics will always appear softer compared to other body types their height or weight because of the “flesh” (natural padding of fat) over their muscles and bones, whereas Naturals will always appear more “mature” compared to older Gamines because of the visual weight of the bones (cheekbone, jawbone, etc.) in their face.
KIBBE BODY TYPES
Tumblr media
(Credit to: Aly Art)
**Note**: The Kibbe Body System is a complete overview of the entire frame, not just the face: two different people can share strikingly similar facial features yet have completely different bodies. It’s important to assess more than one facet.
If we were to place the Kibbe Body Types on a left to right scale, Dramatics have the most yang-- sharpness, length, elongation, structure-- and Romantics have the most yin-- shortness, roundness, softness. In the middle would sit the Classics-- a balanced mixture of yang structure and yin softness; mid-left would be Naturals (yang elongation with blunted width); and mid-right would be Gamines (an uneven mixture of yin and yang.)
DRAMATIC TYPES
Dramatics
Tumblr media
Dramatic Types have longer, angular, more narrow bones-- a vertical column, if you will-- that curve into points instead of “blunt” edges. They are moderate to tall (5’9"/173cm and up), and have prominent, straight, sleek features. If plus sized, they accumulate weight in their hips and upper thighs.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sean Connery, Charlton Heston, Ricardo Montalban, Errol Flyn, Daniel Craig
Katherine Hepburn, Cate Blanchett, Angelica Huston,  Diane Carol, Faye Dunaway, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristen Wig, Maggie Smith, Taylor Swift
Soft Dramatics
Tumblr media
Soft Dramatic Types have more softness in their bust and hips, giving them a powerful voluptuousness (as opposed to the Romantic Types delicate pure yin.) They are moderate to tall (5’7”/170cm and up), with a moderate waist and fleshier facial features, arms, and hips. If plus sized, they get heavier on the fleshiest parts of the body: bust, hips, waist, thighs, upper arms, and the face.
Dean Martin, Christian Bale, Matthew McConoughy, John Travolta, Nicholas Cage, Clark Gable
Adele, Ann Bancroft, Ava Gardiner, Barbara Streisand, Kim Novak, Maria Callas, Mae West, Rachel Weiz, Rita Heyworth, Sofia Vergara, Sofia Loren
NATURAL TYPES
Naturals have longer, blunted, wider bones-- a T-shape, if you will-- that curve into blunts instead of angular or softened edges.
David Kibbe no longer believes in the pure Natural Type, placing clients or celebrities into either Flamboyant or Soft Natural.
Flamboyant Naturals
Tumblr media
Flamboyant Natural Types have a touch more structure: blunt, long, wide bones; wide, T-shaped shoulders; and a figure that narrows in a flat, straight line down their waist, hips, and legs. They are moderate to tall (5’11”/180cm and up), with features that are broad and angular, but not sharp. If plus sized, the body tends to become squarer.
Calvin Klein, Dick Van Dyke, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Tom Sellack (maybe), Michael Landon (maybe), Joe Biden
Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway (had work done to disguise), Bea Arthur, Brooke Shields, Cameron Diaz, Carly Simon, Cindy Crawford (quintessential, imo), Emma Stone, Farah Faucett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ingrid Bergma, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Lucille Ball, Linda Carter, Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman, Katie Homes (probably), Princess Diana Spencer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tracey Ellis Ross, Uma Therman, LOTS of supermodels (broad shoulders, long and straight waist)
Soft Naturals
Tumblr media
Soft Natural have a softness to their long, blunt, wide bones, narrow hips. They are moderate to tall (5’5”/165cm and up), with smaller, rounder softness to their blunt facial features and frame. Their T-shape is less pronounced because of their more proportionate shoulders (in comparison to Flamboyant Naturals, at least.) If plus sized, SNs thicken in their upper arms, thighs, and hips.
Alan Alda, OJ Simpson, John Wayne, Robert Redford, Robert Conrad, Bing Crosby, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Gene Kelly, Brad Pit, Gene Hackman
Bette Grable, Carol Lombard, Chloe Sevigny, Doris Day (icon), Goldie Hahn, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Lopez, Julie Andrews, Kamala Harris, Kat Dennings, Katy Perry, Kim Bassinger, Marisa Tomay, Renee Zellweger, Sandra Bullock, Scarlet Johanson (had work done), Sissy Spacek
CLASSIC TYPES
Classics are an even mixture of both skeletal structures: their frames are mid-height or tallish-- symmetrical angles or edges-- with a “balanced” appearance: their arms, waists, and legs are proportionate in length and width to their overall frame (not too angular, curved, or blunt); and can handle more visual weight than Romantics but less so than Dramatics or Naturals. They appear naturally polished; and often are dragged down by elements in their wardrobes that skew too much in any direction (appearing overwhelmed or overdone.)
Kibbe no longer promotes pure Classic Types, insisting that no person can be a perfect mixture and discouraging his clients or followers from trying to fit themselves into an impossible mold.
Dramatic Classics
Tumblr media
Dramatic Classic Types are an even mixture of yin and yang with just a touch more of yang’s structure, giving them either slightly sharper features, slightly longer limbs, or a bit less softness overall. Their height is moderate (5’5”-5’8”/166-172cm or thereabouts); and their figure and features are symmetrically squarish (more rectangular compared to Dramatics’ long and narrow vertical column and Naturals’ long and wide T-shape.) If plus sized, they gain weight in the hips and thighs (rarely around the bustline), becoming more pear-shaped overall.
Carey Grant, John Ham
Diana Rig, Gina Rollins, Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, Jill Biden, Lana Turner, Olivia Munn, Phylicia Rashad
Soft Classics
Tumblr media
Soft Classic Types are a symmetrical mixture with just a touch more of yin’s softness, giving them either slightly softened features, slightly shorter and wider limbs, or slightly more “fleshiness” overall. Their height is moderate (5’5"-5'6”/164-169cm); and their features are slightly small and wide. If plus sized, SCs lose their waist definition and become fuller in the face.
John Slattery, John Glenn, Gregory Peck, Bryant Gumbel
Barbara Walters, Carolina Herrera, Donna Reed, Emma Thompson, Grace Kelly, Joan Fontaine, Kirsten Dunst (maybe), Marion Cotillard
GAMINE TYPES
Gamines are an uneven mixture of both skeletal structures: their frames are usually short or rarely tall-- unsymmetrical angles or edges-- with a “youthful” appearance; and the mismatch of their skeletons give them an appearance of eternal youth instead of “womanly” or “mature” beauty. The endless combinations of their features-- long arms, short arms, long legs, short legs, long torso, short torsos, visual weight in the face, no visual weight in the face, etc. etc.-- thrive in the chaos of mismatching, color blocking, differing clothing silhouettes; and are often dragged down by too much polish or restriction.
David Kibbe no longer stands by the pure Gamine type, filtering people into either Theatrical or Soft Gamine.
Theatrical Gamines
Tumblr media
Theatrical Gamine Types tip the scales in a more yang than yin direction, giving them a broadly angular frame composed of shorter lines (compared to the Dramatics’ and Naturals’ long, angular, and broad lines.) They are moderate to short height (5’6”/168cm) with square, slightly wide features. Structure gives them very defined musculature-- ala Dramatics and Naturals-- and a longer, “leggier” look. If plus sized, TGs collect weight from the waist down, turning squarer or “stocky.”
Jimmy Kimmel, Frank Sinatra, Neil Patrick Harris
Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Debbie Allen, Gloria Vanderbilt, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Kelly Osborne, Liza Minelli, Lucy Liu, Penelope Cruz, Tina Turner, Twiggy, Zoey Deschenel
Soft Gamines
Tumblr media
Soft Gamine Types tip the scales in a more yin than yang direction. They are the short Gamines (5’2”/157cm or thereabouts): delicately broad-- a combination of delicate and small, broad and angular-- with width dominated by an overall “fleshy” softness in their arms, hips, and thighs. SGs often have “doll" like features: rounded face shape, fleshy cheeks and big eyes. If plus sized, their figure becomes more rounded, mainly in the bust, hips, arms, and face area. (Soft Gamines often think they are overweight-- when more often they’re not-- because of their natural roundness and lack of pronounced hips and waist.)
Fred Astaire, Robert Downy Jr.
Bette Davis, Susan Hayward, Claudette Colbert, Debbie Reynolds, Eartha Kitt, Halle Berry, Judy Garland, Leslie Caron, Mary Kate and Ashley Olson, Octavia Spencer, Natalie Wood, Reese Witherspoon, Sally Field, Winona Ryder
ROMANTIC TYPES
Romantics
Tumblr media
Romantics are dominated by yin softness; and, therefore, have the least visual “weight” to them. Their frames are mid-height or shorter (5’5"/166cm and under) with “rounded” and curved angles or edges-- sloped or petite shoulders, rounded facial features, and “fleshy”, shorter arms, waists, and legs. If plus sized, Romantics keep their waist definition while their body and face become more rounded and “full.”
Colin Firth, Leonardo DiCaprio, Elijah Wood, Simon Baker, Richard Gere, Michael Jackson, Omar Shereef, Billy Dee Williams, Elvis Presely
Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci, Arlene Dahl, Bernadette Peters, Beyonce, Dolly Parton, Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lollobrigida, Helena Bonham Carter, H. E. R. Gabbie Wilson, Gene Simmons, Madonna, Maryln Monroe, Susan Sarandon
Theatrical Romantics
Tumblr media
Theatrical Romantic Types differ from pure Romantic Types in their width: while both are delicate, the touch of yang to a TR’s frame gives it a narrower waist, slightly sharper features, and a bit less flesh over their arms, hips, or even hands. Their moderate to petite height (5’2”/157cm or thereabouts) is voluptuous, but small and narrow as opposed to wide and “bulky.” If plus sized, their figure retains its defined waist while the arms, thighs, and face become quite “fleshy.”
David and Susan Kibbe, Orlando Bloom, Prince, Johnny Depp
Ann Margret, Heidi Lamar, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jane Seymor, Jean Harlowe, Mila Kunis, Morgan Fairchild, Salma Hayek, Selena Gomez, Vivian Leigh

Today is #TransDayofRemembrance,
started in 1999 by trans activist Gwen Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester. Now, it's held every year - because when we look at our trans history, it's just as important to remember the wins at it is to honor the losses.
HRC reports that at least 32 trans people were killed in the U.S. alone this past year. Take a moment to honor their memory, and commit to helping us teach LGBTQ+ youth (especially trans kids) that despite an increase in anti-trans rhetoric and legislation, they are worthy, they are valid, they deserve to live safely and fearlessly, and they belong here. 🏳️‍⚧️
Honor those we lost here.

Promise Edwards, a single mother of three living in Laurens, South Carolina, spends her spare time passing QR codes out to schools, churches and members of her local community. Scan one, and you'll be led to an online document full of LGBTQ+ resources across the state — which Edwards hopes to expand to a nationwide list by 2024.
The heart-shaped codes — on stickers, embedded in keychains, printed on T-shirts and more — are sometimes adorned with sparkles or owls because, according to Edwards, they were "Jacob's favorite thing."
Edwards, known as Aunt Lulu to 18-year-old Jacob Williamson, welcomed the newly out teen into her home after he was kicked out of his own.
"The day after he moved in with me, he said, 'I'm trans, and I go by he/him and I want to be called Jacob,'" said Edwards, whose mother had been Edwards' childhood best friend. "I said, 'OK. I love you,'"
"He was only allowed to be himself for 28 days."
Four weeks after Williamson went to live with Edwards in June, he went missing after going to meet up with online friends for the first time.
Edwards had begged him not to go, even asking her boss to change his shift at the Waffle House where they both worked to make scheduling harder — but Jacob was unconvinced. He shared his location with Edwards through an app, got in the car and left.
It was the last time Edwards would see him alive.
After she could neither get in touch with him nor see his updated location, Edwards reported him missing and spent the next four days talking to law enforcement, hanging posters, and frantically searching for Williamson. She knocked on doors, passed out flyers and posted online — but to no avail.
His body was discovered by police on the side of a South Carolina road — just three days before Edwards' 37th birthday.
Williamson was at least the 14th trans person murdered in the U.S. in 2023, against a worrying backdrop of statistics that show trans people are more at risk than ever, despite only making up an estimated 0.5% of the U.S. population.
Data compiled shows 320 trans and gender-diverse people were reported murdered between October 2022 and September 2023, according to nonprofit Transgender Europe, though actual numbers could be even higher.
Ninety-four percent of the victims were trans feminine people or transgender women — meaning they were not assigned female at birth — and three-quarters were younger adults, between the ages of 19 and 40.
"Most victims were Black and trans women of colour, and trans sex workers," stated the report, its Nov. 13 publication intentionally coinciding with the start of Trans Awareness Week.
The week culminates each year in Trans Day of Remembrance, which was founded on Nov. 20, 1999, by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman who had been killed the year before. The vigil honored Hester and the deaths of all the other trans people who had been lost to violence that year, according to GLAAD.
"It's a day to honor and remember the folks that have died, but it's also a chance for us to reckon with, where do we go from here?" said Arielle Rebekah, communications consultant at the Transgender Law Center.
"Every day is the day to think of a way forward," they said.
Mariah Moore, the co-director of policy and programs at the Transgender Law Center, agreed and reflected on how imperative it is for allies to show up for trans people.
"A lot of folks are very vulnerable and feel alone and isolated," she says. "You could change the trajectory of someone's life by simply saying something — letting them know that they have someone ... that is also standing beside them, willing to fight for them."
In addition to her work at the Transgender Law Center, Moore is also one of the co-founders of an organization called House of Tulip, which was born during the COVID-19 pandemic and works to find long-term housing solutions for trans and gender non-conforming people in Louisiana, where she is based.
"The goal is to help folks build a stable foundation so that they can have access to the futures that come so easily to others," she says, adding that the organization is a shining reflection of successful "coalition work;" identifying a cycle and working to fill a need by collaborating with others and sharing knowledge and resources.
In the U.S., 586 anti-trans bills have been introduced in state legislatures this year alone, and aim to restrict or completely ban access to gender-affirming care, rid trans youth of the ability to participate in sports, arts and clubs — and in more extreme cases, even threaten parents with child abuse charges for affirming their kids' gender identities.
In the current tenuous political climate, the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth is worsening, according to the results of a national survey by The Trevor Project, which found that 41% of LGBTQ+ young people had seriously considered suicide in the past year. Additionally, youth who are transgender, nonbinary and/or people of color reported higher rates of suicidal ideation than their cisgender and White peers.
"I feel that Jacob was not targeted because he was trans, but yet, he was targeted because he was trans," says Edwards. "These people preyed on the fact that Jacob was partially out; that Jacob was ostracized from his family; that he had nobody but me and my family."
Since Williamson's murder, Edwards says that while many in her life — including close friends and family — have turned their backs on her, the trans community has embraced her with open arms as she continues to fight for justice for Jacob.
"I really just wish we could have had this support when Jacob was alive," she said. "And we probably wouldn't even be talking right now."
But further data from The Trevor Project provides a glimmer of hope for others within the trans and gender non-conforming community: youth who reported gender-affirming school and home environments reported significantly decreased rates of suicidal ideation — with actions as small as being addressed by their correct pronouns, having access to gender-neutral bathrooms or being able to wear gender-affirming clothing making a noticeable difference.
As Rebekah puts it, "Even in the face of this violence, we are thriving."
"Yes, we might be under attack," adds Moore. "But guess what? We've also fought back. And we're winning."
Each year, though violence against the community soars, young people are increasingly identifying as trans and seeing themselves reflected in culture, including in film, television and literature. Transgender Day of Visibility is even now recognized by the White House.
"My life is great," says YouTube star Eden Estrada, also known by her online alias, Eden the Doll. "I had a hiccup, but my life is good."
In August 2020, video depicting a violent attack on Estrada and two of her friends was posted online, where it quickly went viral and became national news overnight.
While waiting for an Uber in Los Angeles, Estrada alleges that the trio was beaten and robbed, with one of Estrada's friends knocked unconscious in the fray. The LAPD later investigated the incident as a hate crime.
"I'm grateful to be alive," says Estrada. "I've been through something traumatic, but I came out of it really, really, strongly."
Estrada is now happily engaged, has a flourishing career and in her own words, is "over" what happened to her. But reflecting on Trans Day of Remembrance, she recognizes this could have been a different story.
"This day, it could be about me," says Estrada. "Something worse could have happened to me that day."
Estrada said that she uses this day not only to reflect on loss, but to reflect on the LGBTQ+ figures who paved the way for trans people today — people like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Erica Andrews, she said, adding that she also uses this day to reflect on past versions of herself as well.
"I think it's remembering where you started, where you're at and where you're going," she said.
Rebekah feels similarly about Trans Day of Remembrance, which they say is an opportunity to elevate stories of trans joy and triumph.
"People need to see that trans folks are also changemakers; are also leaders; are also successful across all fields, across all industries, across all areas of life."
When asked how she will be spending Trans Day of Remembrance, Moore says, "I need to take time to really mourn some of the folks that I've lost recently, and just take time for myself as a Black trans woman... honor myself and the work that I'm doing."
"I think this year, I need some time for me."
It has been nearly five months since Williamson's body was recovered.
The two people he went to meet that day were both arrested and charged in his death, but that's not enough for Edwards. "These people still get to talk to their families on Christmas," she said.
"And we don't."
She says she will be keeping Williamson's memory alive on Trans Day of Remembrance by hanging Christmas decorations at the site where his body was found and attending an event in honor of the day at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she has been invited to speak.
While Williamson and at least 319 others who have been lost to violence this year will be in hearts and minds on Trans Day of Remembrance, Moore points out that countless trans people have also been lost to lack of basic resources like housing, healthcare and food.
"It's important that we uplift those stories and use Trans Day of Remembrance...to let folks know that trans people are loved and have people fighting for them," she adds. "Don't be silent when you see injustice is happening."
Edwards believes Trans Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to provide support in death for trans loved ones that they may not have had in life, and bring attention to the fact that nobody is above experiencing loss.
"It means awareness that this actually happens to people that we know and we love," she says.
But more than anything, Edwards hopes wherever Williamson is now, on this day and all days, that he is at peace.
"He had a life full of conditions," she says. "I hope that where he is, he feels love. Unconditional love."

Almost/Could have been Contestant List
Who would you like to have seen become a companion?
Rules for further suggestions:
Must have met the Doctor
I know Jago and Litefoot are popular but I am not including anyone from Talons as a matter of principle
Not someone you could already call a companion (some exceptions may be made on a case by case basis)
Not necessary, but ideally someone who would have said yes in the right circumstances
There's no other restrictions on the kinds of characters to include, just anyone you wanted to come on further adventures in the TARDIS
Current List under the cut (there will be a group stage if necessary to bring this down to an appropriate number ie a power of 2, so do not worry about suggesting more)

Carnal Knowledge (Mike Nichols, 1971) Cast: Jack Nicholson, Ann-Margret, Art Garfunkel, Candice Bergen, Rita Moreno, Cynthia O'Neal, Carol Kane. Screenplay: Jules Feiffer. Cinematography: Giuseppe Rotunno. Production design: Richard Sylbert. Film editing: Sam O'Steen. Carnal Knowledge begins as a light comedy of manners set in the late 1940s, when college students were supposedly less casual and more poorly informed about sex. Jonathan (Jack Nicholson), who claims to be more sexually experienced than his Amherst roommate, Sandy (Art Garfunkel), gives Sandy some advice on how to approach Smith College student Susan (Candice Bergen) at a mixer. The scene has some of the keen ear for awkward attempts at communication found in screenwriter Jules Feiffer's cartoons and in director Mike Nichols's comedy routines with Elaine May. Eventually, Sandy and Susan get together, with Jonathan still coaching Sandy on sex, until Jonathan himself makes his own moves -- unknown to Sandy -- on Susan. He succeeds, in an excruciating scene in which Susan's confusion about the loss of her virginity plays across her face, partly obscured by the grunting Jonathan on top of her. And from then the film becomes increasingly sour, as the years pass and the misogynistic Jonathan continues to meddle in Sandy's life but also makes a mess of his own relationships with women. He takes up with Bobbie, a model played by Ann-Margret, for what begins as a passionate fling and ends in misery. By the end of the film he is being serviced by Louise (Rita Moreno), a sex worker whom he hires to perform a routine designed to give him an erection, and he abuses her when she doesn't follow his plan. It's a sad, rather hopeless film that despite fine performances from all the actors never quite convinces us that its characters are anything but puppets of the writer and director. Jonathan and Sandy seem incapable of change and growth. Something makes me think that Carnal Knowledge would have been a better film if it had been told from the women's point of view, that it would have made a more telling point about the male ego and about the great gulf between the sexes if we had seen Jonathan and Sandy through Susan and Bobbie's eyes. We get glimpses of that, but Susan disappears from the film after she marries Sandy and he, egged on by Jonathan, drifts into mid-life affairs. Bobbie's entrapment into Jonathan's world leads to a failed suicide attempt, after which she, too, vanishes from the story. Feiffer and Nichols never make it clear whether their film is a satire on sex in modern society or just a particularly bleak story about unhappy people.

Jumu'ah Sohbet: 30 December 2023
In the brink of a gross genocide, where the Zionists are destroying not only Palestinians but with it, their own sense of humanity, and even the ever-prevailing injustice of Sudan... was Shaykha Rita's delivery of a Saturday Sohbet (spiritual address) that compassionately redirected us as God-conscious humans. It was not only a source of spiritual healing with her unwitting poetry, but it inspired us with her sense of humbleness!
Bismillah (With the name of Allah) to reflecting on her shared learnings and Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude) for all these inspired supporters. They reinforce our spiritual school that is being aptly steered by our primary Anne (spiritual mother), Shaykha Muzeyyen Ansari, who chooses each of them to deepen our spiritual insights.
#1. Shaykha Rita, the "humble-smith," began her Sohbet by professing that all power and knowledge belong to Allah and not us. She described how each of us is an intersection between ourselves as nafs (egos) and what Allah has placed within us. Therefore, we each have the capacity within us to be of service, to help one another, and to do good in the world.
She described my exact post-accident quandary of whether we choose to love or, conversely, hold onto our resentment, difficulties, and complaints over how things have turned out. For us, this alternative chosen way is turning towards Allah; connecting, and looking to be of service. We are connected as human beings but more so as a Tariqa (spiritual community) who are striving to become more sincere and capable of being of service for Allah’s sake:
Ya Muqtadir Ya Qadir Ya Nafi (Yearning Allah's ability to enact goodness)
For your Ammu, that is a surrender to this mysteriously satisfying "job" that your Abbu has boldly entrusted upon her, to spiritually reflect upon our Tariqa's weekly snippet-out of-the-ocean of learning where in we wade and swim in 🌊
Shukran Ya Allah! (Divine gratitude)
#2. However, Shaykha Rita immediately clarified that this does not mean grandiose service. Just as I am trying to professionally redefine myself, she echoed that we should not be after specific jobs. We should only be after doing what we can for Allah’s sake. She proceeded to describe my comforting reality that it doesn't mean that we can't strive to be of incremental help, as I have been enabled to offer our Tariqa. The help depends on how much we surrender and are prepared to take on.
She mystically added that each of us, whether knowingly or unknowingly, has a task. We strive to be Khalifatullah as Allah's representatives, and we already have tasks that we are already unknowingly doing. We have a place and purpose in our bodies, homes, and communities. For every person that we have a relationship with, we and they are representing Allah's names and qualities in ourselves.
We may look around us and think that certain things can't be a part of Allah in a person or war, calamity, or disaster. And we go around secretly having all these judgments, which creates distance. Our grievances, bereavement, and suffering in other's hands, suffering in other people's nafs and our own nafs especially, keep us separate and we keep away from who we are and what Allah wants us to be!
#3. Shaykha Rita then relayed an essential truth of mine where we voluntarily acknowledge that Allah puts us in a specific situation and context - to show us that He wants us to do something in that moment. What would the right thing be to do, the right prayer to make and the right sense of service be...? Remembering that any good that comes through us, is from Allah and anything bad is from our nafs. This is why I call my remembrance of Allah an accidental epiphany, that has raised me out of my proverbial slumber in my past privilege, where Allah allowed me freedom to disconnect from Him, despite my Tariqa that kept me connected to Him!
Shaykha Rita echoed that we must learn from how we look at nafs, from us and others. I was blind to Sufism's emphasis on the nafs, totally blinded by its powers. Our nafs is truly like an enemy to us. Allah has also given us the capacity with the help of our Silsila to battle against our nafs in what wants to pull us away from Allah by creating obstacles. We can overcome these obstacles because our hearts want Allah, and our hearts want to be loving and good. Everyone of us want to be loving and express Allah's attributes in our lives, and if we don't, it's because of our own; incompleteness, suffering, hardships, and our own forgetfulness of remembering Allah! I hope that now everyone understands my reason for deleting Facebook which celebrated my nafs from my past, it takes a life altering accident to see haq (truth) more clearly, and to focus on nurturing the remembrance of Allah instead. Shukran Ya Allah (Divine gratitude) for my accidental epiphany that has brought me back to remembering who I truly am, a Khalifatullah (representative of Allah)!
#4. Further on, she described my post-accidental reality where there are times and spaces where we need to acknowledge where our nafs is acting up, or others' nafs, but where is Allah in this situation - where is the focus until we bring the focus back to Allah! Shaykh Taner used to say that when hearts meet hearts, there is love, and when nafs meets nafs - there is fight! So, if we're engaging in conflict and having problems, Allah is teaching us by giving things and taking things from us, as He does with all of His creation. I maintain that this is why I had my life altering accident at a perceived "best" time of my life, whereas Shaykh Taner and Anne's work to rehabilitate me in this form, is ironically the most spiritually able that I am, as a less-able being.
The humble-smith choked me up when she proclaimed:
It's not only because we are practicing Sufism, that Allah is raising us because Allah is raising all different creations with different means, guidance, and religions. But this is the way He is raising us Alhamdulillah, and with this comes a certain responsibility, to try and act with whatever it is that we have!
#5. One of Shaykha Rita's final spellbinding shares was that beyond sharing our gifts with others, it might be skills that we have been blessed with that we can share with one another. Subhana'Allah, she even proceeded to describe my self-deprecating tendency where we are tempted to hide and think that we are not good enough yet, we haven't grown enough or prayed or performed enough of our wazifa (a regular litany of scripture) or been in the Tariqa long enough, and whatever complaint that we may have about ourselves! We don't have to be anywhere to make the intention to be generous with what Allah has already given us! Yes, there is so much more to learn, much to put into action, and much more of the living of the Qur'an, but we can start right now! We can start in this breath ... Huu, remember, Baba and Ma...?!
We can start with the intention of loving for Allah’s sake, praying for one another, praying for His creation. We can make the intention of developing a sixth sense of gratitude to Allah; where we think, see, hear, feel, and remember Allah. We must get into the habit of appreciation and enjoyment, where we really feel happiness irrespective of the challenges we face; whether bodily, financially, or socially... we can have little holidays being with Allah!
And the appreciation is not just yes Allah, You're beautiful but yes Allah, let's be a part of this beauty by adding to it. Let's help with this beauty. Let's be active in our actions, which don't have to be grandiose. We can hide and still do good. We can witness and observe Allah, but there might be times that it is important to speak and act!
This explains my holiday "chooti" (break) and as to why our Jumu'ah Sohbet is happening now, on a Saturday. There was such deep inner retrospection struck by the natural poetry of Shaykha Rita:
Shukran Ya Allah! (Divine gratitude)

Note
in Martha's family, would you consider adding her cousin Adeola Oshodi (from Canary Wharf)? and if Mickey is included then I think his grandma (Rita-Anne Smith) could be included too because they had a very sweet relationship in both universes
yep, but I tihnk I will separate Mickey and Rita from the Joneses in that case, it already felt a bit of a stretch to include Mickey based off of one scene when we have no idea what his relationship is like with anyone other than Martha
