Rhoam had called him a knight. Then he called him Your Highness. But what was Link a prince of? (Assuming he even was, assuming Rhoam wasn’t screwing with his head for Link’s disrespect). He wasn’t Prince of Hyrule, surely. Was he…not from Hyrule?

It all made his head ache.

“Zelda?” he asked aloud. “Was he serious?”

There was no answer. Just the wind.

Link grabbed the paraglider. He wouldn’t get any answers in these ruins. He needed to get off this plateau at last.

He’d follow the slate. He’d find Impa.

And then he’d find whoever gave him his locket.

100 years ago, the Great Calamity ravaged Hyrule. In the chaos, Princess Mipha and her husband, Prince Link, lost their lives. Until Link rose from the Shrine of Resurrection that is. Needless to say, the Zora aren't too happy about their amnesiac prince wandering the country alone. It looks like he'll need a guard...

OR: Link and Mipha were married. He's joined by some over-protective friends on his quest to save Hyrule.

Little Tadpole - Rivan/Dunma Headcanon

i definitely got carried away and wrote something about Rivan and Dunma’s father/daughter relationship. but i needed to write it, so i will not apologize :’)

Rivan absolutely LOVES his daughter

we all know that

he found her as an egg just as he was starting out as a guard while doing one of his first surveys

‘Is that— oh my…’

he was SO nervous to bring her home

but he couldn’t just leave the egg abandoned

so he brought it back

and he notified Gaddison and Bazz IMMEDIATELY

“Ummm… guys? I found this when doing a survey… What do I do?”

they just look at him with shocked expressions

“Do you really think we can raise a baby ourselves? I mean, we’re barely grown, and we don’t know ANYTHING about childcare.”

Gaddison shrugs

“I mean… we have a whole community to help, Bazz. Lighten up.”

Trello (Rivan’s father) isn’t too sure

but Rivan seems excited

and that’s all that matters

“You have a heart of gold, you know? I’m so proud to have you as my son.”

Rivan gets LOADS of advice from Seggin

and from Trello, of course

Sidon is always up for babysitting when Rivan needs to work or take a break for a bit

because let’s be real here… those princely duties don’t seem THAT difficult

but Rivan ends up bringing Dunma with him to work a lot of the time

and the elders in the guard are 100% okay with it

Dunma learns so much from everyone

and she sees the whole guard as family

when Dunma’s excited, Rivan’s excited

she teaches him patience

lots and lots of patience

and he grows to be one of the best father figures a Zora can have

and he’s oh so silly

he loves telling stories of when she was little

and you bet he has a nickname for her

“You’re my little tadpole, and you always will be.”

when she joins the Zora Guard, no one’s surprised

but Rivan is BEYOND thrilled

Bazz is sure to place her with him until she seems ready to take on a survey/mission herself

and until that time comes, Rivan is always happy to have her by his side

The reunion of Big Bad Bazz Brigade (and Sidon) I wrote a few words about how each of them works in the group in this particular story. From Bazz's perspective though, so who's to say how truthful those observations are. Typed transcript of my scribbles under the cut:

Captain Bazz's very annoying friend group, as explained by Bazz. So no objectivity at all. Bazz: One sane man (or so he'd like to bielieve) Full of sufferig.

Rivan: Too pretty for his own good. Firmly holds the record of "most bad decisions taken in a lifetime". Direct cause of roughly 80% of Bazz's problems. No concept of personal space. The only truly good person at this table.

Gaddison: Firm believer in "violence is always the answer". Annoyingly observant but refusing to use this power for good. Stupidly strong. Stupidly gay. Sadly, -not- stupid.

Link: Chaos incarnate, no perception of long time consequences of his actions. Weirdly, the best person to turn to for some hones heart-to-heart. Both a teenager and a 120yo at the same time, with all the emotional pitfalls of it.

Sidon: Bazz's boss, Prince, adopted ypunger sibling (in a way) and old friend all at once. Maybe even more. It's complicated. Annoyingly confilict avoidant, desperate to keep everyone happy. Smitten.

Other people Bazz considers his friends, but aren't part of the gang: Kodah, Kayden, Jiahto ---

Of course I have so much more to say about every one of them, and the descriptions vary wildly, based on whose pov we choose to assume. They are all in some ways terrible and problematic, full of various traumas, but also friends who try to do their best. Such is life. There also is a story behind all of it, obviously. I don't know if I'll ever end up publishing the pages upon pages of comics I have about those guys, since it'd require loads of editing and rewrites, and i don't have this kind of time. But on the off chance I will, I want the personalities to be revealed in this way instead of big headcanon dumps. It's more fun this way.

Pairing: Prince Sidon x F!Human!Reader (no y/n) (takes place before BOTW when most Zora still dislike humans/Hylians lol)

Notes: Being with the Prince of the Zora isn’t easy. Especially as a human. Luckily Sidon knows what just to say to make you feel better.

You should have known better than to try and hide from Sidon. 

Despite having a somewhat “airheaded” demeanor to the average person, anyone who truly knew him knew that the Prince was actually quite sharp and observant. Especially when it came to you.

It was… difficult adjusting to life in Zora’s Domain. Being a human, not even a Hylian, rendered you “less-than” in most of the residents’ eyes, despite your best efforts. You’d relocated some months ago to be closer to Sidon and fully lean into the idea of one day being wed to him, and ever since it had been nothing but a minefield. 

Some Zora welcomed you with open arms, mostly the prince’s personal guard, Bazz, and those who knew him especially well. King Dorephan’s reaction seemed… mixed, to say the least. While he was elated that his son had found someone he cared for so deeply, there was still the issue of one day needing an heir to take over the throne after Sidon passed. And considering humans and Zora had incompatible DNA, biological children with you was impossible. But, to the king’s credit, he had largely put aside such worries for a later date. He was in good health, and Sidon himself still likely had a couple hundred years of life left in him. 

However, the rest of the Domain at large was… less than pleased with your presence. At first, you’d thought it was simply the council of elders, as Sidon had warned you long before you’d made your courtship public that they would not be pleased with the idea of him being with anyone but a fellow Zora. 

But over time, you began to hear whispers from far more than just the council.

The children thought you strange. You supposed you couldn’t blame them, Zora’s Domain seldom had human or Hylian visitors. A few other Zora scattered about tended to give you angry glares or ugly looks, something Sidon had reassured you was due to them being part of a particular “fan club” of his and likely simply jealous of you as a result. 

These, you could handle. But over time, you began to hear whispers from others too.

“I’m sure it’s simply a phase.”

“He wants to be like his sister so much he just went out and found a random human to be involved with. The novelty will wear off eventually.”

“How could she possibly know enough about the Zora to rule over us one day? She’s a fool, and Prince Sidon would do well to move on sooner rather than later.”

“She tries far too hard to fit in here. If she thinks it’ll ever happen, she’s even more oblivious than I thought.”

“She’s holding him back.”

All of these comments you took in stride. You tried your hardest to shrug them off, to not allow them to affect you. And for the most part, you succeeded, with some aid every so often from Sidon. He would reassure you that you were not simply a novelty, that he loved you dearly and that he would one day wed you properly, despite whatever objections he faced.

But one day, you overheard a certain conversation that simply… broke you.

You’d decided to go for a walk up to one of the waterfalls close to the Domain. Along the way, you came across a small group of guards talking amongst themselves.

“Looks like you lost the betting pool, Tottika. The eight month mark passed last night.”

“I know. Who’s still left in the running?”

“Bazz for sure. He’s put his earnings on them actually getting married.”

Your attention piqued, and you stopped in your tracks to try and keep quiet enough to not draw their own gazes.

“He’s a damn fool. There’s no way. Who else is still in?”

Your heart began to fall.

“Rivan’s still in. She’s betting on another year or so. I think Torfeau might still be in too, but I can’t remember how long she’s bet on.”

Your heart sank, the topic of conversation beginning to dawn on you.

“Quite honestly, I can’t believe they’ve lasted this long. She has to be doing something to trick him. There’s no way Prince Sidon would’ve stayed with a human for this long of his own volition. Not when he’s got so many better options.”

Your chest ached, and you turned back to make your way back to the palace. 

You’d gotten used to snide comments from other residents. Gotten used to harassment from the council and other older Zoras. But the guards… you’d thought that at least they were alright with your presence. You’d even gone so far as to consider some of them your friends. 

Apparently not, considering they’d all been taking bets on how soon you and Sidon would split up. At least Bazz had some faith in the two of you, but apparently the rest did not.

The other voices through the domain fell flat as you made your way back to the quarters you shared with Sidon. As expected, he was still sitting at his desk when you entered quietly, a quill softly scratching against the parchment that he wrote upon.

You had every intention of simply tiptoeing past him and curling up in the waterbed that he’d had built for you since sleeping with him in his usual pool wasn’t always feasible. But, much to your chagrin, he seemed to have noticed your presence anyway.

“You’re back early,” he commented lightly. “You just left, darling. Is everything alright?”

“Yeah,” you mumbled, choosing to forego lying in bed and instead moving towards a nearby window that overlooked your home. “It’s fine. Just didn’t feel well, that’s all. So I decided to come back.”

“Now dear one,” Sidon gently scolded, “there’s no need to lie.”

You exhaled a long breath and turned towards the view below. He was right, there was no use in trying to lie to him. He could read you like the documents he pored over every day.

“I… overheard a conversation between some of the guards.”

“Something tells me overhearing a simple conversation would not normally be enough to upset you so, my love.”

“They,” you began, then paused. You knew getting them into trouble with Sidon would only make the situation worse, but you also knew that Sidon wouldn’t want to be left in the dark about such things. “Turns out they made a betting pool. Of how long it would be before we… before we split. And apparently there aren’t many people still left in the running. In fact, only Bazz is confident that we’ll last long enough to get married.”

“They what?” you could hear the anger rising in Sidon’s voice despite keeping your eyes averted from him. “This is unacceptable. I’ll have to bring them all in for a proper meeting right away and let them know they are to disband this immediately and treat you properly. In fact, perhaps I should call a Domain-wide meeting instead, considering how others’ treatment of you has been equally appalling.”

“Sidon, it’s not that big of a deal-”

“Nonsense!” Sidon began. “I will one day be their king, and you will one day be their queen. They must learn to treat you with the respect you deserve, and I’m sure in time they will learn to love you as I do-”

“Sidon.”

He stopped in his pacing, and you could tell he had turned to where you sat against the windowsill overlooking the domain.

“Please,” you said, then heaved a sigh as you continued, “don’t say anything to them.”

“Why ever not?” he asked, a slight undercurrent of anger that was not directed at you lacing his tone.

“Because,” you sighed again, “the only thing I can think of that’s worse than people thinking poorly of me is people still thinking poorly of me but being forced to treat me otherwise.”

Sidon fell quiet.

“I… I’m not sure I understand.”

“I can tell when someone is being untruthful in their words, Sidon,” you said, still not turning your gaze from the domain below. “I can tell when someone is only kind to me out of obligation, and it only makes me feel worse knowing that as soon as I turn my back, they’ll whisper among themselves. I’d much rather them simply be openly honest than be forced to lie. I can think of few things worse than people being kind to me just because you ordered them to.”

Your voice progressively got quieter, melting into a whisper by the end of your explanation. You curled in on yourself, willing yourself to keep your emotions and tears in check. Crying would solve nothing, and would likely only serve to make Sidon feel that much more determined to try and make his fellow Zora like you more.

The room was silent for some time, the only sound being the muffled waterfalls outside. Then, you softly heard Sidon pad his way towards you, not stopping until you heard him next to you.

“My love,” he murmured in an attempt to properly catch your attention. You turned to face him, finding that he’d knelt down to be nearly eye level with you as he reached a hand out to you. You took it, and he gently brought it up to his lips in a kiss before lowering it again.

“I know I have said it many times before,” Sidon said, “but I think it bears repeating all the same.”

He paused for a moment, as if collecting his thoughts.

“I adore you. There is no one I’d rather be with than you, my darling. The… incorrect opinions of others do not change that. They will never change that. You have done so much in your short time living here, whether any of them realize that or not. And one day they will, I believe in that. One day they will look upon you and recognize you as their queen, as the person I have chosen to rule by my side in the coming years. I am sorry that they seem to be blind to that right now. But mark my words, my love, I will do everything I can to open their eyes.”

Your vision blurred as he spoke, so sure in himself and his ability to make the rest of his people love you. In a way, you felt yourself almost able to believe it as well.

Before you could stop yourself, you surged forward, wrapping your arms around Sidon’s neck and burying your face there. Your breathing hitched and hiccupped, and you felt his arms wrap around you as he let you release the emotions that had been building up. He softly soothed you, running a large hand up and down your back and gently murmuring professions of love to you until you had no more tears to give.

As you felt your eyes dry, you pulled back, bringing your hands up to either side of Sidon’s jaw before leaning in for a kiss. And another. And another.

“Would you like to change into some swimwear and have a nap with me in my pool?” he asked softly when you finally parted from him. “Or would you perhaps prefer to have me share your bed instead?”

You thought for a moment before you spoke.

“I’ll go get changed.”

It only took you a few moments before you walked back in and took Sidon’s hand as he walked into the water. Shortly after joining him, he pulled you to him and leaned back against the wall, allowing himself to float in a sitting position as you sat across his lap. Within several moments, you could hear soft snores coming from your prince, and yet his hold on you never faltered.

Sidon held you close as he floated in his sleeping pool. You nestled your face against his neck, one of his side fins resting over your head as you did so. It was as if he was subconsciously shielding you from the outside world, lulling you into drowsiness as you joined him in sleep. 

You knew he loved you. Never once did your belief in that falter. You could only hope that one day, with perhaps some encouragement from Sidon, the rest of the domain would come to enjoy your presence too.

Tears of the Kingdom confirms that 100 years old is about middle age for Zora which is perfectly in line with what information we had been given in BotW regarding Zora age and growth.

Rivan was the only Zora to give a concrete age being "over 130" and claimed that he and Link swam together as childhood friends when Link stayed at the Domain along with the rest of the "Big Bad Bazz Brigade".

"Well, it has been 100 years since then. And now I'm over 130 years old..." / "We used to swim together when I was but a child... Remember?" –Rivan

Furthermore, Rivan has a daughter named Dunma who was very adamant about being not yet 100 years old. She claims that she doesn't speak like those over 100, and now in TotK, another Zora mentions that Zora over middle age of 100 speak differently, more "eloquently".

"We Zora tend to speak more eloquently after reaching middle age." / "I hope that when I reach 100 years, I will also speak as beautifully as our elders. Unless that is too...OLD-fashioned, heh." –Fronk (TotK)

It's hard for me to tell in English, so I can't tell whether Dunma has changed her manner of speech which could suggest she is now 100 years old—she didn't seem that far from the milestone in BotW.

"*sigh* Let's just say I'm less than 100 years old. Can't you tell?" –Dunma

So we can get a good picture of Zora age to maturity with Rivan: he was over 130 in BotW, his daughter was under 100 meaning that he conceived her in his 30s to 40s which suggests that full Zora adulthood is about that age like adult humans hitting about 20 years old. For simplicity, I assume Hylian 20 is about Zora 40.

We can use Rivan to determine how old he was when he called himself a child using Link's age. I assumed that Link was younger than Zelda at first because he is so short, but it turns out he is older since Paya's age was actually influenced by Link so that there be a character around his age:

"Initially, Paya was to be a very young girl, but due to a lack of girls around Link's age in the world, she was changed to be a young woman between 18 and 20 years old." –Creating a Champion

So I will assume Link is about 19 for simplicity.

If Link was 19 during the Calamity and was 4 when he first arrived at the Domain, then 15 years ago, Rivan who was (approximately) 35 during the Calamity would have been 20 years old. Considering that he was approaching 40 when he had Dunma, 20 years old for Zora may align with Hylians at 10 years old.

Since Rivan belonged to a group of friends along with Link, they were probably around a similar age. That includes Gaddison and Bazz in the "Big Bad Bazz Brigade"

"I must ask something of you, traveler. If you know it, speak it now. What is the Big Bad Bazz Brigade password? Fluffy white clouds! Clear blue..." [Zora] "Yes! There is no mistaking it! You are, indeed, the real Master Link!" / "[It's true.] I knew it! The only people who know that password are members of the Big Bad Bazz Brigade!" –Bazz

I will also include that Mipha died very young for a Zora since her spear is meant to accentuate her youth being taller than she is. Her short hight is a large part of it, but did you know that initially the adult Zora were meant to lose their tailfin? In the Creating a Champion book, the standard adult Zora design doesn't have a tailfin and their is a comment on the child Zora concept art states that all child Zora have the tailfin "like Mipha". This tailfin detail was not kept since all the Zora have tailfins in the game probably because their bare butts look pretty funny, haha.

Since Rivan had a child in his 30s-40s quite soon after Calamity while Mipha was still so short, it seems that she was younger than Rivan.

It's hard to put a number on Mipha's age since we don't know when Zora hit that "growth spurt", but it is safe to say that she is in the middle of that growth. She did say that Link always seemed to grow a lot faster than she did, so this growth that she is going through isn't very fast compared to Hylians.

I would like to mention the elder Zora especially Dorephan who was incorrectly depicted in Age of Calamity. Age of Calamity simply reuses his model from BotW, but it is wildly inaccurate to how he is described 100 years ago in BotW.

The elder Zora seen in BotW were in their prime during the Calamity 100 years ago. Their generation was the one defending the Domain at the time, and Dorephan was described fighting a Guardian some time after the Calamity which resulted in his forehead scar seen in BotW. This event is stated to have happened 100 years after he became king and since Sidon appears to be taking on that title in TotK (I haven't finished the Domain, so this was gleamed from his appearance in the last trailer), then it may be safe to assume that Dorephan was about a similar age to Sidon when he became king being over 100 years old (middle aged).

"Around 100 years after King Dorephan ascended to the throne, a stray Guardian crossed Upland Zorana into our domain." / "You can still see the scar he earned that day on his forehead—a token of his triumph." –History of the Zora, Addendum 1

Rivan is yet again a good example of Zora age and maturity since his father Trello is in BotW and is wrinkled and old like the other elders while he and his daughter look quite similar in age.

This shows that Dorephan who is part of the same generation as Trello would not be so old 100 years ago like he was depicted in AoC—with that forehead scar no less. (I liked AoC but this detail irritates me)

Considering the info available to us in BotW and TotK, Dorephan is likely over 200 and is in his elder years. It is safe to assume that Zora pass away before reaching 300.

So there you have it, an analysis on Zora age and maturity. They are still considered children in their 20s while they reach maturity around 40, they are middle aged at 100 and die of age before 300.

It could be Rivan just being a overprotective dad but being under a hundred years old is thought of as a child. Link's hundred years sleep in botw made it clear that being over a hundred is common for Zora's but I wonder what the upper limits of there lifespan is?

Bolson wouldn’t consider himself the paternal sort, but he wanted to wrap Link up in a blanket and keep him safe. The kid had marched right up to him two weeks ago, all alone and determined to buy a condemned house. Now, it wasn’t too unusual to see a young traveller by themselves- but this young? 

Hylia above, Bolson remembered thinking. You’re a baby. What are you doing out here? Where are your parents?

He hadn’t been sure of Link’s age, beyond that he was plainly a kid. When they met, Link looked exhausted, ill and pale, with dark circles under his eyes. He looked better now, though there were still shadows under his eyes. But he didn’t hunch in on himself and his eyes didn’t dart about as anxiously. 

And now, it turned out this kid was destined to fight Calamity Ganon. You know, the apocalyptic creature from everyone’s worst nightmares. Responsible for the death of millions, total destruction of their country and upheaval of their world. That Ganon.

Bolson brings Karson, Hudson, Link and the Zora on a night out. Purah makes some Zora-proof paragliders and it's time to visit Impa before heading for Eldin. Impa gives Bazz and Rivan some orders of her own.

Just to cheer up your day I have this headcanon that it’s heavily implied that Rivan was a single teen dad. We know he’s a single dad because there is no mention of Dunma’s mother, and the hint that he was a young/teen father is because the rest of the big bad Bazz brigade are young adult Zora’s (130’s as stated by Rivan in the game) they’re not as mature as the other Zora parents, such as Fronk & Mei (she’s not really mature but you know what I mean lol) and Kodah & Kayden so they’re a bit younger, and while Dunma isn’t even 100 (which I’m assuming means full grown adult in Zora by the way she said it when link asks her age and she gets defensive) she is very physically matured. But she’s still put on shift with her father for supervision.

So, Rivan is in his 130’s (middle age/prime of life for Zora is ~150-250ish because they live around 400 years at the most) so he had Dunma when he was less than 100 years old, therefore wasn’t a full adult yet.

SO, imagine teen dad Rivan and his friends Bazz and Gaddison raising little Dunma while they were still becoming adults themselves and figuring things out. Them passing around Dunma for babysitting when Rivan had to work, teaching her how to become a guard, etc. No wonder she wanted to become a guard, her dad and honorary aunt and uncle are all guards!

i simply LOVE this! i did a little research, and the Zora's hit their 'adult age' between 60-80, which makes total sense, because Finley is like 50 something, but hasn't gotten her growth spurt like Tula and Tona, who are only a few years older than her.

Rivan is so so sweet, and i can TOTALLY see the Big Bad Bazz Brigade passing around a toddler zora. i think it would play out like a frat house trying to take care of a baby, honestly, and it's hilarious to me. i want a spin off game of this (nintendo, start taking notes please? thanks.)

A soft redesign of three of the botw Zora. I think Gaddison's perhaps a little TOO lavendar here but since I was using my palette and matching by eye I don't really feel a need to fuss about it.

It's been hard to get CoRA art done digitally bc my laptop fan isn't working but I had this three quarters drawn, so *shrugs* decided to finish it and share it

Fun fact, Gaddison is the only purple Zora in botw. I hunted.

I thought they should have more scars, not just bc they're all soldiers but because they all apparently hung out with Link a lot when he was a kid XD

...Also this version of Bazz is tol, like not as tall as Sidon but taller than average. Because headcanons reasons don't look at me.

what is this project?

i’m redrawing a frame from every (important) scene in the legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom! there are a total of 53 scenes in total that i will be doing :)
