Mama Thames
Inktober day 19. Plump
She sat enthroned on the finest of the executive armchairs. Her hair was braided and threaded with black cotton and tipped with gold, so that it stood above her brow like a crown.

'Some days it seems so long ago, and some days…'
I'm deeply fond of Thomas Nightingale and also he frequently makes me very sad, so I wanted to draw something about that. Also, I figured if anyone would suit Leyendecker illustration vibes, which I'm really into right now, he would.
(Drawn in alcohol markers and coloured fineliners, and image described in alt text.)
Edit: I have a few A5 prints of this image available in my online shop! Check out my blog page or pinned post for a link to my Storenvy.

Keeping Lines Blurry
Masterlist
Taskforce 141 was assigned to help with security at a high profile political meeting in a joint effort with other world players. When things go wrong and militant operatives infiltrate the gala the taskforce is forced to step into the driver's seat to get the British government officials safe. Many lives were lost but the 141 managed to save those that they were assigned to protect, including a woman from Gaz's past.
Now that the initial terror is over the real work begins to figure out exactly what happened. Who attacked the gala and what do they want? And, most importantly, are there more targets?
Gaz will need to put all of his training to the test to be able to get the job done and walk away in one piece physically and mentally. But can he leave the past in the past?
Tumblr media
Whole work can be found on AO3 - IndigoSunset This story is complete.
Chapter 1 - It's Been A Long Time A gala is bombed and Gaz runs into a familiar face from the past. Chapter 2 - All For Show Everything isn't as it seems with Olivia. Chapter 3 - London Bound Gaz has been assigned to escort Olivia and Henry back to their home in London. Chapter 4 - Safehouse Henry and Olivia's house is compromised so Gaz has to take them to a safehouse instead. (Also, a fanart/animation by @ahopelesspedantic for Chapter 4 can be found here.) Chapter 5 - Security Protocols Gaz brings Henry and Olivia home and learns of the new security detail. While preparing for his new assignment he gets a message from a mysterious number. Chapter 6 - Kitchen Conversations Gaz has a dinner and dessert with Abby while Olivia tries her best to not fall apart. Chapter 7 - Digging for Information Gaz continues to dig for information about Henry with help from the mysterious texter. Olivia reaches out one night begging for help. Chapter 8 - Down By the River Gaz and Olivia have a heated conversation and some revelations are made; ones Gaz suspected and some he wish he didn't know. Chapter 9 - Under the Overpass Henry makes Olivia and Gaz pay for their perceived indiscretions against him. Chapter 10 - Water Retrieval After being dumped in the Thames Gaz struggles to survive. Chapter 11 - Missing Gaz has officially been reported missing and Olivia has to decide what she will do with the information she knows. Chapter 12 - Summit All the world's leaders have gathered for a summit to avoid another potential war. Little do they know the threat is already there. Chapter 13 - Deadly Secret Despite precautions Henry's plan is put into motion and not everyone is saved. Chapter 14 - Revive Gaz saves Olivia and they go into hiding. Olivia struggles with everything that has happened, including her injury, but Gaz helps her through it. Chapter 15 - Cover of Darkness Gaz and Olivia find comfort in the dark. When daylight breaks and reality creeps in however, they both struggle to figure out what comes next. Chapter 16 - Bait The team has a plan to lure Henry out of wherever he's hiding. Gaz is not a fan of the plan but he's not given much choice. Chapter 17 - Burden of Proof Gaz and Olivia find the evidence they need to take down Henry, but not without some resistance. Chapter 18 - Steadfast The 141 finally got Henry right where they wanted him, coming out one step ahead instead of two behind. In the aftermath of Henry's takedown, Gaz and Olivia navigate their second chance at life together. And to wrap up KLB another super cute a fanart/animation by @ahopelesspedantic here. I think it portrays Kyle and Olivia perfectly 💙

Controversial Character Tournament Round 2: Lesley May from Rivers Of London vs Lime from Witch's Heart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(remember that these characters are fictional and your fellow tumblr users are real. i will block you if you harass others in the notes, please consider sending your unhinged harassment to my inbox instead)
Propaganda under the cut, may contain spoilers:
Lesley May:
LOVE: - "I just think that if you get possessed by an ancient spirit who literally crunches up all the bones in your face, and your mentor who was supposed to protect you says "yeah, we probably COULD fix it, but we won't because of Magic Rules" then you should be allowed to betray them and go dark side to Get Revenge. As a treat."
Lime:
BOTH: - "one of the most traumatized characters i have seen in media that notably stuck with me. obsessed with her character work but god is she awful. her entire motive for doing what she does in the story is to make others suffer as much as she did and also she literally doesn't know what love is bc she never experienced it or even saw what it was supposed to be like (heads up that the wh artist doesn't like their art edited so if you want to use her get some fanart with permission 👍)"

For ao3 wrapped, 10, 11, 28 and 29? also what's your most used additional tag...
Thanks for playing, let's see!
10. What work was the quickest to write? Well, A Private Room only took a couple of days to write, though I flopped around like a dead fish for a few weeks choosing between a prompt for The Goblin Emperor and another prompt for a Rivers of London fic, given that I'd never written for either fandom. In the end I went with The Goblin Emperor, and it really flowed easy, though damn if conjugating verbs for thee and thou wasn't trickier than I thought it would be.
Although, if I count the tiny ficlet I wrote to accompany Multicorps and Murderbots, my Stellar Firma/Murderbot Diaries crossover fanart... I mean I literally banged that out inside the A03 text box just to be flavour text to the picture. So maybe that?
11. What work took the longest to write? And It Is Now, And It Is Here, my canon divergence AU for The Terror Reverse Big Bang, took me three months all up, which actually isn't that bad - it's like 10,000 words per month? (The fact that this is a speedy pace for me is why I could never make it through NaNoWriMo.) Honestly, the hardest part was getting all the sections of canon dialogue right, and telling myself that it wasn't going to be unbearably boring to read repeated canon dialogue.
28. Favourite work you wrote this year? ... That being said, I am pretty happy with how And It Is Now, And It Is Here turned out. Also I got lovely art for it, which always makes me happy. ^_^
29. Favourite line/passage you wrote this year? I really enjoyed writing dialogue for Crozier and Fitzjames in And It Is Now, And It Is Here, because they are such huuuuuuuge bitches with each other at the start of the series and then so penetratingly honest at the end, but like, different flavours, you know? And because the fic hews close to canon events until it doesn't, I had to kind of match tone as best I could all the way through, so it was really fun coming up with the cattiest, most Victorian, and most precision-strike way they could possibly phrase something. I think my favourite "Oh no, that's awful, he would totally say that in his current headspace" line was Francis, after being ethered by Franklin, seeing the ghost of Fitzjames Future bleeding from the hairline and the wound in his side, and making fun of the spirit for showing up with stigmata. 0/10 response, totally uncalled for.
Aaaaand my most frequently used additional tag was somebody lives/not everyone dies. Ah, the old Terror standby.

This is the story I wrote for Yuletide this year. I was SO sure that I was going to get Ted Lasso that when I got my assignment and saw I’d been matched on Rivers of London I didn’t have any idea what to write at first. But when I looked at my recipient keerawa’s prompts, the idea of a case fic touching on real events jumped out at me - if I could think of the right real event. Luckily, @firesign23 suggested Big Ben’s renovations, and something clicked in my brain and said: gargoyles!
And almost 11,000 words later, here we are. 😂

This is my story for the JB Fic Exchange, which I wrote for the lovely @writergirl2011
It’s been eight months since I last wrote anything, so it was really nice to sit down and let the words flow again.
A big thanks to @firesign23 and her team for all their hard work running the exchange this year! (And also thanks to @firesign23 for reading this baby through when she had so much else going on yesterday.)

What a truly progressive government looks like
Tumblr media
The man in this photo is Gough (pronounced Goff) Whitlam, the 21st prime minister of Australia. Fifty years ago, on 2 December 1972, Gough Whitlam’s Australian Labor Party won the federal election, and ushered in easily the most progressive government Australia has ever had. It was a government that truly changed Australia, and set it on the path towards being the country it is today.
Gough (he was one of those rare politicians who was widely known simply by his first name. There was truly only one Gough) was tall and imposing, with silver hair and dark eyebrows, and a booming voice that delivered his razor sharp wit. When he led the ALP to victory in 1972, the party had been out of government for 23 long years, and were determined to make a difference when at last they were back in power. As you’ve probably worked out from the glorious 1970s t-shirts in the picture, the election campaign slogan was It’s Time. It featured in a famous election ad jingle, performed by Alison McCallum and accompanied by many famous faces of the time.
After winning the 1972 election, Gough wasted no time in implementing his election promises. Not willing to wait until the final results of the election were confirmed and the full ministry could be appointed, he and his deputy, Lance Barnard, were sworn in as prime minister and deputy prime minister on 5 December. Between the two of them, they held all 27 government portfolios for two weeks until the rest of the ministry was sworn in. The duumvirate, as it was known:
ordered negotiations to establish full relations with China
ended conscription in the Vietnam War
freed the conscientious objectors who had been jailed for refusing conscription
ordered home all remaining Australian troops in Vietnam
re-opened the equal pay case (for women, who were at that time by law paid less than men for doing the same job) and appointed a woman, Elizabeth Evatt, to the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission, the body that made the decision
abolished sales tax on the contraceptive pill
announced major grants for the arts
appointed an interim schools commission
barred racially discriminatory sport teams from Australia, and instructed the Australian delegation at the United Nations to vote in favour of sanctions on apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia
And that was just the first two weeks.
In the three years that followed, the Whitlam government:
introduced a national universal health scheme
abolished university fees
abolished the death penalty for federal crimes
established Legal Aid
replaced God Save the Queen with Advance Australia Fair as the national anthem
replaced the British honours system with the Order of Australia
created the family court and introduced no fault divorce, the first country in the world to do so
ended the White Australia policy
introduced the racial discrimination act
advocated for Indigenous rights, including creating the Aboriginal Land Fund and the Aboriginal Loans Commission, and returned some of their traditional lands to the Gurunji people in the Northern Territory. This was the first time that any Australian government had returned land to its original custodians. Here’s a famous photograph by Mervyn Bishop of Gough pouring a handful of red earth into the hands of Gurunji leader Vincent Lingiari, ‘as a sign that this land will be in the possession of you and your children forever‘:

My #1 post of 2022
You...watched it??? The Netflix-so-called-Persuasion???? I mean. I don't think I have an actual question. Was it just that human urge to stare at a car crash/doom scroll?
@firesign23 and I watched it together. It was good to have someone to scream at as we somehow made our way through it.
I have to say: NOTHING could have prepared me for how bad it is. It is WAY worse than the trailer. And it's not just a dreadful, dreadful DREADFUL adaptation that understands NOTHING about the novel it's allegedly based on. It's not just that it neither knows nor cares about the social rules, styles and fashions of the Regency period.
It's quite simply one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Just so, SO bad. The makers of it clearly have utter contempt for their audience. The way it veers wildly between slapstick comedy and angst, the complete lack of chemistry between (allegedly) Anne and the block of wood playing Wentworth, the random decisions that the characters make which make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. (Eg. After a conversation with Wentworth on a beach, Anne walks into the water, fully-clothed, and then swims around for a bit. Presumably she then walks back to where she's staying in a soaking wet dress. And yeah, that's a spoiler, but honestly it should serve as a warning, if anyone needs one.)
Henry Golding, who plays Mr Elliot, is the one member of the cast who seems to have realised just what sort of movie he's in, and his performance is COMPLETELY over the top. Perhaps the scene where he explains his Sekrit Plan to Anne with no prompting (because clearly the audience would not have picked up on it without it being spelled out to them) gave him a clue. The bit right near the end where he's kissing Mrs Clay in the street was so extreme that @firesign23 and I both completely lost it. I guess it's better to laugh derisively than to scream in horror?
So, I bet you're sorry you (didn't) ask that question, hey? 😂

I've been getting increasingly obsessed with the Rivers of London books over the past few months, and since I'm always a sucker for sad immortals and mentor types I've also developed some pretty serious Blorbo Emotions about one Thomas Nightingale.
I filled a sketchbook page in the process of figuring out how I want to draw him, and I'm pretty happy with the face I've come up with. The smaller expression sketches were a bit more quick and experimental, but they're a decent place to start from. I need to figure out Peter and the rest of the gang as well, I want to do So Much art of these guys...

Since on Tumblr there’s no point in pandering to the algorithm, and I might as well do exactly what I like, I give you: a scene from a five-year-old oneshot in a tiny fandom. Well. The fic - “The Next Best Thing” - is one of my favorites, as is all Sixthlight’s Rivers of London fic really, and @sixth-light , I hope you don’t mind me using it for kissing practice.

Blorbo diversification! So they don't all look like brothers, lol. Turns out noses and ears are incredibly fun to play around with.
Anyway, from left to right:
James Bond, DCI Thomas Nightingale, Commander Sam Vimes
