Hey everyone! It's, uh, it's certainly been a minute.

If my brief return a few months ago and then radio silence yet again is any indicator, I'm sure most of y'all probably know where this is going.

HOMECOMING, as of now (and for the indefinite future) is going to be on hiatus, and maybe discontinued.

This project initially started out as a silly idea, a culmination of my love for the yandere vn community and the wonderful games it has created, and my original plot and cast of characters. In the beginning, I was trucking along, working on scripts, planning out routes, spending hours of research on coding and how to get this thing up and running. Not to mention, the attention my silly lil project garnered was a lot. At least to me. I've had a semi popular writing blog before, and was no stranger to inbox asks, and how they pile up, or the notes that popular posts can get.

I was far too ambitious in all honesty, and once the glitz and glamor of a new project wore off, I hit a massive wall. Hard. It seemed that to actually work on HOCO was much like pulling teeth - whether it was writing, drawing, or even *thinking* about it, I found myself sinking further and further into a imposter syndrome of sorts.

And well, I guess making this announcement is sort of proving it right.

Even so, I've always known when to take a step back, when to settle down -- and now, I'm just making it official. I owe you all at least that much.

The blog will be staying up - I have no plans to delete it in the slightest. I'll just log out of it most likely - I'll still be around on my personal tumblr, where I'll hopefully start being more active there again.

Nothing could have prepared me for just how much care, how much love you guys have shown HOCO - so much so, it's still hard to believe. All the fanart, the fanfic, the memes - they're all saved to my phone, in their own album. Thank you to all who have made amazing creations for my silly characters, as well as the countless asks y'all have sent - maybe one day I'll be able to answer all of them.

I really hope one day I can return to this project with fresh eyes -- I'm hoping real, substantial time away from it will help that process. There are other, personal projects that I've been doing that have helped that creative spark again, as well as indulging in traditional fandom activities, mostly fanart. Unfortunately, I think it's safe to say that my time in the Yan VN community is over for the time being, at least until/if I start working on HOCO again. (Or whenever I play the latest updates of 14DWY - I am the Leon Fan Club President after all ^^).

I've been rambling too long, and I think it's time to close this chapter for now. Thank you all again - and one last Henry for the road. They were there since the beginning of HOCO in 2019, so it feels right for them to be here at the end.

Jaskier is fucking appalled by the animal-naming habits of every single witcher within three (3) days of arriving at Kaer Morhen

This is a man who named each individual mouse in his prison cell. And now he finds that it's not just Geralt, who keeps buying chestnut mares and naming them all Roach like some kind of imagination-deficient walking time loop.

It's Lambert, the absolute cretin, who always names his poor animal Horse, as though it needs a fucking reminder, because "it's a fucking horse, songbird, it doesn't need a fucking name".

It's Vesemir, who's spent at least Geralt's entire lifetime leaving his horses with whatever name they had when he bought them, even when it's entirely inappropriate for a witcher's mount. Geralt remembers learning to ride on Vesemir's big black gelding Samson, which is not terrible as horse names go, he supposes. But Samson was succeeded by Dame Bubbles III, who was named by her previous owner's eight-year-old daughter, and even Vesemir himself can't keep a straight face at the memory.

It's Coën, who's always named his horses after food, which seems terribly mean. Rump-Steak is actually very sweet, nipping habit aside.

And then Eskel comes home, right as Jaskier is comforting poor Rump-Steak ("Never mind, dear boy, my parents named me Julian and I turned out alright") and finally, here is a man with some sense. Lil Bleater is not the most creative of names, but Eskel picked it himself, and his horse has a suitably witchery intimidating name even if he's a sweet soft boy who gets bullied by Miss Roachie. Someone around here has a brain cell - thank heavens!

(This is a very wrong-footing introduction for Eskel. He's not used to having strange men drowning in Geralt's fluffiest fur-lined cloak stalk up to him before he's even got in the door, addressing him by name and demanding to know what he calls his horse. But he's delighted to be pronounced "the only one around here with some bloody sense", asks Geralt, "Is this your bard?" and promptly explodes laughing at the thought of Geralt getting henpecked every time he names a new Roach for twenty fucking years)

hey Des, is there any backstory given to Roach’s name in any canon? just curious cause I made my heart hurt thinking that roaches in our world are hard to kill and so maybe geralt was projecting that protection? xoxo love what you do!

That is such a sweet, heartbreaking idea. I really like that, and I think it makes an excellent headcanon.

Canonically though, Geralt's mare is actually named after a fish. (this factoid taught me something I didn't know about my own language, but more on that later)

To answer your question more accurately, I asked @cherrypoison1889 to join me on this. Cherry is a Polish Witcher fan who very generously helps me with posts involving the original Polish, (everybody say Thank You Cherry! Go follow them!) and this is what she said:

Cherrypoison1889: Roach is Płotka (Płoć to be exact, the Common Roach) which is a type of small fish. Płotka is a diminutive, so the closest English equivalent would be "Roachie", but I guess the translator was a coward and decided not to go with it >:c (I kid, ofc). Płotka is a very cute sounding name in Polish, and idiomatically it can also mean something not worth the effort, or small potatoes.

So, not only, is Geralt's horse named after a fish, but he calls her the sweet, diminutive version. I think that is a huge change to the vibe of Geralt's character to the English translation!!

I mean, Geralt's horse is very important to his characterization! In some ways, she reflects his character. So, the way he interacts with her has a big impact on the way his character reads!

Imagine Geralt saying fishie every time instead of Roach. That's a hugely different vibe from Geralt using the name of a much maligned insect that inspires revulsion in many people. Cherry says the same:

Cherrypoison1889: I'm afraid the translator also shot himself in the foot with this, bc while Roach is literally the name of the fish, it also means Cockroach and I think it is the association most ppl make when they hear it, so it makes it sound almost harsh and ugly, comparing with the adorable-sounding Płotka

Can I tell you a secret though? When I learned this, I was like, WHY? why would the translator change a fish to an insect? And that, my friends, is the story of how I learned that in English, there is a fish named a roach.

I find it hilarious that I, a native English speaker, and someone who fished a lot as a kiddo, had no IDEA that we have FISH named Roaches. I learned about this fish on witcher fandom twitter. At the time I learned this, I made a meme.

So what do you guys think? Should they have changed the fish name for the English translation? Or it is what it is?
