I can't believe I got to hear Al Stewart's "Roads to Moscow" with my own ears during the season finale of Our Flag Means Death season 2. When they first started playing it I was like no fucking way and said to my partner, "This is an Al Stewart song" in disbelief, and then when his iconic voice started singing my partner was like, "Well, shit. Good for him." He is such a great, underrated musician. I think "Roads to Moscow" is one of his best songs, and definitely neglected. I hope this makes a whole generation of young fans discover him. He is still touring (he was famous in the 60s/70s) and still an amazing performer. More people need to know his work beyond "Year of the Cat."
It was a sort of weird song-choice if you know the topic of the song (it's about Russians during WWII, not pirates in the 1700s) so that was kind of distracting to me, but I also don't care. It's such a great song and deserves more love. Happy to see it given to him.
And that's all I've got to say about that.

I've been listening to Al Stewart's "Roads to Moscow," the soundtrack to the fuckery in uniform that Stede orchestrates near the end of s2e8.
I wasn't at all familiar with Stewart's work before watching this episode, but I am chuckling that Stewart read approximately 40 books of history while writing this single song, which is now lovingly showcased in the season finale of a series that uses historical moments as jumping off points for fiction.
I spent enough time attempting to be an academic to love the impulse to read All The Books About The Event before trying to write about the event. But damn if I don't also appreciate DJenks' irreverence toward the historical record, given the massive numbers of important stories that have fallen through its crevices.

I have a lot of Thoughts on the OFMD finale that I am still processing and sorting through (and some of them are rather in conflict with one another), but one non-spoilery comment I will make now is that I was super thrilled that they used an Al Stewart song. (And one that wasn't Year of the Fucking Cat!)

Happy trans visibility day!!!
Art by @vranart
For a long time we wanted to draw one of our lead characters Chanel (he/him) together with CHNT's Sydney because, like we've mentioned in one of our posts, we take a lot of inspiration from this podcast. Also because both of them are:
Fat, trans & fabulous!
A digital sketch of Chanel Boijko and Sydney Sargent, showing them from the hips up. The piece uses minimal colors: shades of blue for the background and the lineart, and pink for the lighting. Both Chanel and Sydney are looking at the viewer, Chanel making peace signs with both his hands and smiling cheerfully, and Sydney leaning on his crutches with a more relaxed smile. Chanel is a short, fat boy with freckles and shoulder-length wavy hair with bangs. He's wearing a dress with puffy sleeves and a flared skirt, heart earrings, and a simple ribbon choker. Sydney is a short, fat man with long wavy hair, with some plants and mushrooms sticking out of it. He's wearing a baggy sweater and a skirt, and several layered necklaces.
