Built in the 1940’s by Levengood Dairy, these amazing cup shaped structures originally severed ice cream and other dairy products out the front window cut directly into the cup. Later after the Dairy sold the properties they were built upon and expanded into larger eateries, such as this on in Reading Pennsylvania that became Speedies Dinette. An impressive structure in of itself with amazing vintage stonework, this building has aged beautifully. Sadly today the Dinette sits abandoned awaiting its fate. With this being one of only four Levengood Dairy cups left in Pennsylvanian, hopefully someone will come along and restore this amazing piece of local programmatic architecture history. The Colonial Theatre (originally The Colonial Opera House) opened in 1903, and was a popular venue for vaudeville acts and movies for the early 20th century. In 1917 Harry Houdini preformed his famous safe escape act on stage, but unarguably the most famous milestone for the theater was in 1958 when featured as a filming location for SciFi classic The Blob staring Steve McQueen. Since 1999 every July The Colonial hots Blobfest. A three day celebration of the 1958 film, including a recreation of the “runout” scene, a street fair, screenings of The Blob, and more. To this day the theatre still shows movies, and in 2017 unveiled a major expansion adding two new theaters. Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to mark a couple of other things off my bucket list, one of them being the Monroe Homestead, the Birthplace of Bluegrass Music. Ironically, it wasn't until I left Kentucky that I developed an appreciation for the unique sound. The sign in front of the house reads, "The Monroe Homeplace has been called the most musical home in America. It is not only the birthplace of three famous musicians, it is also the birthplace of the American musical form known today as Bluegrass. After farm shores were done, the home was a magnet that drew local traditional musicians including Bill’s legendary Uncle Pen. In the summer the music and dancing took place on the porch or in the yard. In the cooler months furniture was moved outside and square dances were held in the home. There has been so much music played in the home that the fibers of the wood actually changed in response to the vibrations. The end result is that the home has become a musical instrument itself. It is believed that this is the original home site of the first Monroes who arrived here from Virginia in 1832. Bill was born in a log cabin on this site in 1911. The log cabin was destroyed by fire when he was five years old. This framed house was built on the same spot around the original sandstone chimney. The Monroe homeplace was restored by the Bill Monroe Foundation in 2001."
