What's ur love hate relationship with Whitney like broski

hey anon thats a rlly interesting question u got there.... i'm gonna use he/him pronouns bc he's male in both runs

hate because.... hes a scoundrel, a brat, a menace, and a monster. he "loves" pc in his own twisted way (that is if you keep him at high dom). love because... his soft moments got me hooked. his fleeting moments of vulnerability, which he hides behind a tough shell. the fact that vrel says he would be a good parent, and how he knows the town is fucked....i've been trying to understand whitney's character lately. like why is an asshole like him a love interest?

i think most would observe that he likes being in control all the time, thats why he asserts dominance over others (in school, to his gang, and pc). it makes me wonder about his background. did something happen to him? but also, it's possible that nothing happened too, he could've just been perceptive. i think it's understandable to put up a rough front when you live in a town like that. he seems to have a fear of vulnerability (him being hesitant to show softness in public, but is a bit more soft in private).

iirc vrel confirmed that pc makes him feel things he never felt before (i saw this in a screenshot and i don't have the source, sorry 😔). i think that may explain why he treats pc like property. he has never felt about anyone like that before, and it makes him vulnerable. since he has a need to be in control, he asserts dominance over pc. hence why he calls them toy, property, etc etc. for awhile it confused me because he would share pc with others.... and act jealous when someone looks at them? but now i understand (of course, i don't think it's right. he treats pc like an object, which is toxic. hope i didn't give this impression 😭). he doesn't wanna be taken advantage of, and is also emotionally constipated.

i had to study him like a lil creatur so i could properly incorporate these traits in my pc's dynamic with him! they got a similar baggage, except whitney swings into the extreme, and my pc reminds him of what he said about the town. something about.... becoming what you hate and hurting your loved ones in the process. :3 that being said, i never keep him high dom for long. my pc wouldn't anyway, so hes low dom/high love for her (hes got his own variation of scenes, but he doesnt have much events.... sad)

tldr: i love and hate whitney because hes an asshole but is also very intriguing.

Chapter Eight: Pain in the Head

I hung out with Tim's friends and worked on character sheets. I spent three hours there before I told Tim I had to go. I had a great time. Don't get me wrong. But I was nauseous and didn't want to be sick at his house. Ives planned on sleeping over at Tim's place, so I didn't have to feel bad about leaving him home alone. I got a ride to the manor, and Bruce sat on the porch waiting for me as soon as I arrived. "Where have you been?" Bruce asked.

"I could ask you the same thing, Bruce... Can I go inside now?" I asked.

"You're pale," Bruce replied.

I wanted to lie down and nap, but I could tell Bruce didn't plan on letting things go. I didn't have the time or energy to explain myself, so I did what any reasonable teenager would do. I made myself throw up and burst into tears. "Jason," Bruce sighed before helping me to the family room. He couldn't accuse me of anything while I was sick. That and throwing up stopped the onset of a migraine.

"I'm so sorry, Bruce-."

"It's fine... When is the last time you took-. I swore I wouldn't ask you that," Bruce replied.

"I didn't think I needed them anymore... I thought I'd been feeling better lately," I replied. Bruce felt my forehead.

"I've been home for two days, and you-. Jason, I'm sorry for walking out on you. I wasn't trying to hurt you... I'm-. Our bond is different from the bond I have with anyone else. I'm holding on for dear life with you... And I know I'm losing you. I feel like you're slipping away when I look at you.

"I can't take the thought of knowing you suffered because I chose to leave you alone that day. Jason, you're so precious to me... And I'm terrified that if I let you talk about what happened, you'll say what I've been most afraid to hear," Bruce confessed. I wasn't in the mood for a serious conversation, but he was finally willing to speak about what happened to me.

"I don't hate you... And I don't blame you for what happened. I've been trying to tell you all this time," I paused, "I'm sure Dick told you I wanna die sometimes... But you don't realize what I have to experience every day."

Bruce exhaled through his nose. "Go ahead..."

"I wake up under debris almost every day... And then I lie about my nerve pain, which I know everyone can see. By the time I get to the mirror, I'm already so disheartened by the countless efforts I've made to appear normal that I barely notice my scars anymore. When I shower, my skin still hurts like the burns are fresh, and I want to cry, but if I do, I'd never get anything done. Then, I come down for breakfast... And sometimes the medications I'm on make me so sick I don't want to eat, but I know I'd be worse off if I didn't.

"Then I go to school, and you wouldn't believe what they say about me," I swallowed hard.

"Jason-."

"But I endure it because I know I have to... What I can't stomach is the isolation. Don't ice me out, Bruce," I begged. Bruce sighed.

"I don't know how-. I can't pretend that almost losing you didn't change the entire way I had to look at our life. You can't be Robin anymore, Jason, and I feel awful for having to take that away from you," Bruce whispered.

"You're saying our, but you mean mine. How can you expect me to step down from being Robin when you can't even walk away from being Batman?" I asked.

"Jason, it's been over a year, and you're still healing. I can't risk putting you out in the field again. Gotham needs Batman-."

"Bullshit," I snapped.

"Language-." "Oh! Go to hell! I told you about all my issues, thinking you would finally see me, and I realized you're no better than the rest of them!" I yelled. I couldn't help but get mad. I should've seen it coming. He'd never had the guts to say it, but I knew this was his way of shutting me out for good. It pissed me off. I threw my crutches and hobbled upstairs.

"Jason! Jason, you can't-!"

"Screw you!" I yelled as I went to my room. I slammed the door and packed my bag. I almost forgot I felt sick. He saw me as weak. That was the worst thing he could've ever opened his mouth to admit. He was no better than everyone that gaped and gawked at me. I was his walking tragedy, and I'd be damned if I let him treat me like a ghost.

I started packing with tears in my eyes. I wanted to get out of there before I said something vile. "Jason, don't be like this! Please come out and talk to me-."

"Bruce, I need to get the hell away from you before I say something I regret!" I hollered. "And I guarantee that if you follow me, I will never come home! Leave my crutches and get away from me!" I sat down and texted Tim. He was the only person I could trust at that moment. I asked him to come to get me, and he texted me immediately. I waited in my room until Tim texted me, and I left my bedroom. Bruce left my crutches in front of the door and retreated like always. I slung my duffel across my body like a messenger bag, hoping it wouldn't throw me off balance.

I swung the door open and left it like that. Tim took my bag and opened his mouth to ask if I was okay, but he kept quiet. It was for the best because I was in a particularly heinous mood. I fell asleep in the car and woke up in Tim's guest room. He was on the floor with Ives, eating pizza. My head throbbed, and I felt sicker than I did earlier. Ives glanced at me and got up to turn the lights down. "Sorry, were we too loud?" Ives questioned.

"No, I-. How long have I been out?" I asked.

"Thirty minutes... Maybe an hour," Tim answered, "Do you need an aspirin?"

I pressed my palms against my eyelids. "No thanks... Tim, do you-? Who carried me in?" I asked.

"We both did. Tim got you out of the car but wasn't strong enough to get you up the stairs. It was a team effort," Ives answered, "You're heavier than you look." I let out a soft chuckle despite the pounding in my head.

"Know how I asked you to move in with me?" I questioned. "Could it still work if it were the other way around?"

"You wanna live here?" Tim asked. I nodded. "Alright." I was shocked. I thought he'd say no, but he looked thrilled.

General Info:

• Unsocial Moth.

• Generally makes people uneasy. She’s visibly disturbed & clearly unstable which makes people uncomfortable.

• It doesn’t help that she’s an avid thief & people don’t like having their things stolen.

• Has poor hygiene due to her mental state, which is only made worse considering the places she hangs out (She… reeks. </3)

• Her teachers aren’t too fond of her. She’s not a delinquent by any means, but she spends more time daydreaming than anything.

• She also… stares. at them. Has a thing for older men / authority figures and it’s. obvious.

• Meek & submissive as fuck </3

• Works at the office building as a temp, but occasionally does housekeeping jobs around town

• Spends her free time in the forest, moor, smuggler’s cave, the sewers. When it comes to the orphanage, it’s all or nothing. She’s either locked herself in her room or avoids it like the plague.

• Has substance abuse issues. Cigarettes, alcohol, stimulants, aphrodisiacs…… <- Big fan. You can find her stealing stimulants & aphrodisiacs all over town, (even if the punishment she gets for doing so isn’t often worth the high).

• Very Much a Recluse. Doesn’t go out of her way to interact with people. Still, heres how she feels about certain NPCS:

• MORGAN — Met Morgan while artifact hunting for Winter, and it. fucked her up. She originally went along with him out of fear, but took to him quickly. He’s the father figure she’s never had. The only one who “understands her”.

Her name rhymes with Charlene, and she bares a resemblance to him (gingers. that’s it.), but it’s enough for her to delude herself into thinking that she hypothetically could be Charlene. (She’s not. & In a more lucid state she would accept that, but. Alas.)

• HARPER — Used to avoid their therapy appts at any cost. Morgan got in her head about him, so she was resilient & slow to warm up. But, deep into treatment at her first asylum visit, she became enthusiastic.

**Looked forward to bathing every day** (because it meant he would touch her and get her off). Liked the way his medicine made her feel, and loved his attention even more.

• KYLAR — A genuine friend. One of the only people she likes being around. Prefers when he’s silent and not overbearing. Keeps him at an arms distance because he’s a little… too into her.

He’s made it very clear that he wants to be more than friends/friends with benefits, but she ignores his feelings. She doesn’t want to date him. She doesn’t want him to “fix her” or “keep her safe”.

• WHITNEY — Evangeline is easy to throw around & take advantage of. She does what Whitney asks of her, little to no resistance.

Not close enough to him to drink at the pub with him & his buddies, but would if he allowed her to. Same with smoking with him. Hypothetically, they could get along. But they don’t.

• MICKEY — Fond of from a distance (They help cover up her tracks and are mysterious. It’s..: appealing :))

• ROBIN & SYDNEY — Not close. Doesn’t interact with them other than what’s necessary.

• WINTER — She helps out with the museum & also wants him carnally. Who cares if he’s a “fossil” or “as old as those antiques he collects”? Not her.

• SIRRIS — Another object of her lust. A seemingly perfect father to Sydney, not to mention hot. She’d do anything to be a demonstration on his home videos, if you catch my drift!

• LEIGHTON — To be determined

Back to me. - a Billy Hargrove's series (Prologue).

Pairing : Billy Hargrove x f! Reader.

Genres : heavy smut, heavy angst, major character death (?).

A/N : I love Billy very much, and I had this one in mind for a few days, hence the series. I'll add the chapters' titles soon, and I'll try to update at least once a week! For the sake of the plot, Nancy, Steve, Robin & Jonathan are 19 and in their last year of high-school; even if I know that they should graduate around 18. Also, Billy is 20, just like the reader, and they both had to repeat a year. It's all to make it easier for me.

+ It won't follow the Stranger Things 's main plot, so you'll get Brenner here even if my story takes place ~ 1984. I will mix some things up purposely, and I will also not make some stuff happen (ex : Billy's situation in s3. It is gonna be slightly different.) So don't be surprised if things seem different from the main plot, I arranged everything so that it could work out for me!

What is the Stranger Things Rare Pair Big Bang?

A big bang is a writing and art challenge pairing authors and artists to complete a long work of fiction. The ST Rare Pair Big Bang is centered around stories which take place in the Strange Things universe, focusing on less-popular pairings, with a minimum word count requirement of 10,000. 

How do I sign up?

To participate as a writer, sign up at the Author Sign Up Page (TBA). Sign ups begin Saturday, July 1st, 2023 and run through Monday, July 31st, 2023.

To participate as an artist, sign up at the Artist Sign Up Page (TBA). Artist sign ups begin Saturday, July 1st, 2023 and run through Wednesday, September 20th, 2023.

Can I sign up as both an author and an artist?

You may sign up in both categories, but please be aware of your ability to balance your workload. Signing up as an artist is a commitment to the writer you claim that you will produce artwork for their story. Signing up as a writer is a commitment to the artist that claims you that you will produce a finished story to accompany that artwork.

The Artist Claim Post will go up on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023. In order to submit your story for an artist claim, you must be at least halfway finished with your draft (5000 words). Authors will submit their story summaries during Author Check-in Number 2, summaries will be anonymized and posted, and artists will fill out a form to claim the story. All artist claims are first come, first served.

Where will the stories and artwork be posted?

All stories and their accompanying art should be posted in their entirety to Archive of Our Own, with a header linking to your story submitted to this tumblr. During the final check-in, when you have finished your works, you will claim a date and time to post your works to AO3 and the linked header to tumblr. You will be responsible for posting your own story/header at least 2, but no more than 24, hours before your assigned time. Please do not cross-promote your works until the bang is completed.

Authors

What is the minimum word count? Is there a maximum word count?

The minimum word count required for this festival is 10,000 words. There is no maximum word count.

Can I use a story I’m already writing?

No. The goal of a big bang is to create a new work of long fiction within a specific time frame. As such, stories you have begun prior to the start of the bang cannot be used. Planning, preparing, and outlining prior to the bang is allowed; beginning your story before the bang starts defeats the purpose of the challenge.

Can I write more than one story?

Signing up for more than one story is allowed, but discouraged due to the high word count requirement. You are the best judge of your writing pace, so please only sign up for what you feel is realistically achievable. Remember that submitting a summary to the Artist Claim Post is a commitment to your artist to complete your story or stories.

Where can I sign up as an author?

Please sign up using the Author Sign Up Page (TBA), beginning on Saturday, July 1st, 2023. Sign ups end on Monday, July 31st, 2023.

Is cowriting permissible?

You may sign up with one coauthor for any given story. You may also sign up for an additional story with a different cowriter, or as a solo writer, if you desire.

Which pairings are permissible?

For this big bang, the main pairing of the story should not be Steve/Eddie (Steddie), Billy/Steve (Harringrove), Will/Mike (Byler), Eleven/Mike (Mileven), or Robin/Nancy (Ronance). Collectively, these five pairings are tagged on more than two thirds of the Stranger Things completed works on AO3. You may include these big five ships as background ships, but you must tag for their presence. Any other pairings are permissible, including poly ships (OT3+) which contain the big five ships, as well as general (Gen) fics focusing on any platonic relationships. Crossovers with other fandoms are allowed for this bang. Real person fic (RPF) is not allowed. Reader-insert (/reader, /you) ships are not allowed.

Will my story definitely have art?

Due to the higher ratio of authors to artists in most big bangs, we cannot guarantee that all stories will have accompanying art. This is why we require that stories be halfway completed for submission to the Artist Claim Post. Completing half the minimum word count by Wednesday, September 20th, 2023 and writing an interesting summary will increase your chances of being claimed by an artist. 

When are the check-ins, and how many words are required for each one?

The full ST Rare Pair Big Bang schedule, including check-in dates, can be found here. Check-ins are an opportunity to touch base with your artist, the other authors, and the mods, but no specific word count is required. In order to submit your story for an artist claim, however, you must have a word count of at least 5,000 words by the end of second check in on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023.

What if I don’t finish my story?

You may drop from the ST Rare Pair Big Bang at any time prior to receiving an artist claim without penalty. Dropping after art claims is unfair to your artist. If you drop after receiving your artist claim without prior contact with the mods, you may not be allowed to participate in next year’s ST Rare Pair Big Bang.

Is a beta required for my story?

Your story must be beta-read at least once before submission. If you do not already have a beta reader, you can visit our beta page (TBA) or our discord to request one.

Can I submit my story early?

You may not submit your completed story until at least 2, but no more than 24, hours before your assigned posting date and time. However, if you finish before November 15th, 2023, you will be poised to claim your posting time slot as soon as the final check-in opens. Please do not post your story to AO3 more than 24 hours before your assigned posting date/time.

Do I have a Tumblr/AO3 account to participate as an author?

All authors must have a frequently-checked email account and an AO3 account (or access to one) in order to post your finished works. AO3 accounts are free to set up and easy to use. Let the mods know if you need an invite; we have several available for use. We apologize if this is inconvenient, but previous bangs have had difficulty with posting format and consistency and this seems like the best solution to allow authors to maintain control over their own work and keep the bang running smoothly. Please provide us with an email account you check at least daily. Only the mods and your artist/author collaborator will have access to the email address you provide.

May I post my story as a series of installments over time?

No. Your entire story must be posted on AO3 before you fill out the form we will use to author its post on our tumblr. You may start posting to AO3 up to 24 hours before your time slot, in order to get all chapters posted and any formatting issues resolved. Please choose your posting slot accordingly. If you need more than 24 hours to format your story, please use AO3’s draft and preview system.

Artists

What are the art requirements for the ST Rare Pair Big Bang?

The ST Rare Pair Big Bang allows a wide array of art, with requirements based on the media. Minimums are described below.

Traditional/digital art:

One piece of cover art

A banner/header (which can be modified from the cover art if you choose)

Fanmix:

A linkable playlist with at least 5 songs (hosted on spotify, youtube, or the like)

Front and back cover art

Fanvid:

A video at least one minute long

Photoset or gifset:

At least six frames/gifs

Podfic:

A recording that covers the entire text of the story.

The summaries posted to the Artist Claim Post will include a note on any types of artwork an author prefers to receive/not to receive. Some authors may be uncomfortable with certain content (eg. nudity) or formats. Please do your best to make an artist claim that will best suit both you and your writer.

Artists are required to host their artwork on a site of their choosing (imgur, tumblr, discord, or the like), and then provide embedding links to their authors. Simply emailing your finished art files to the author is not acceptable. See below for more information.

How do I claim a story?

The Artist Claims will occur on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023. Only stories with drafts of at least 5,000 words will be posted in the claim post. The Artist Claim listings will be anonymous (no author(s) names) and will include any pairings or warnings which appear in the story. All authors will have 24 hours to submit their preferences for which story they want to claim via google form, and then stories will be assigned according to a lottery system.

How does the lottery system work?

Story summaries will be randomized into a list. We will start at the top of the list and count how many artists chose that story as their top choice. If only one artist chose that story as their top choice, they will be assigned to that story. If more than one artist has listed that story as their top choice, we will randomly pick who gets assigned to that story. For artists who are not picked for their top choice, their second choice becomes their top choice for the next round of random picks.

This is different from our previous first come, first served method of art claims in order to make the big bang more equally accessible to everyone.

Can I claim more than one story?

Please claim only one story in the first Artist Claim Round. If we still have unclaimed stories, we will make a second round claim post later that same week.

What do I do when I’m finished?

When you have completed your art, please contact your author to determine the best method for sharing your artwork. Any graphics or traditional/digital art should be embedded within the story, which requires the artwork be uploaded somewhere. There is no requirement for exactly where the artwork be uploaded (imgur.com was a popular service before recent changes, discord and tumblr can work as well), though it must be uploaded by the artist. Graphic/traditional/digital artists may also make an art masterpost on AO3; please do not post your art to AO3 until 24 hours prior to your author’s posting date/time. Artists creating a fanmix for their stories should post the link to the youtube/spotify/etc. fanmix, along with the accompanying cover art, to tumblr or AO3; your writer will include a link to the fanmix in the header of their work.  Artists creating a fanvid should post their video to YouTube, preferably with a link to the author’s story in the notes.

Do I have to have an AO3 account to participate as an artist?

No, an AO3 account is not required to participate as an artist. Your works can be hosted in any location mutually desirable to you and your author, and embedded/linked within the work in the most appropriate fashion. We do need a way of contacting you, so you must provide a frequently-checked email address. We cannot allow sign-ups with only tumblr urls. Email addresses will be kept private to the mods and your author partner(s), only.

Summary:

The world ended, October 28th 1984. Not with a bang, but with the squelching screeching emergence of countless monsters from another world. Steve Harrington’s not sure where he signed up to babysit his girlfriend’s little brother and his annoying friends through the apocalypse, but it doesn’t really feel like he has a choice in the matter at this point. An Apocalypse AU lightly inspired by the movie Love & Monsters.

Title isn’t final, I think I was calling this the ‘Love & Monsters AU’ in my poll. Some side characters will have died in the apocalypse, I am not positive yet who but if you have any questions please feel free to ask as I at least have a list of characters that definitely didn’t. Also gonna have to play around a bit with some timeline stuff, including that the majority of the scifi/supernatural bits of S1 either don’t happen or they get pushed back till they’re more in the s2 timeline. I’ll try to keep things as clear as possible but again if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Dustin always sounds so much older to Steve when he uses the radio, his expression unusually serious as it feels like everyone else in the room holds their breath.

Chapter Fourteen: Needed

Tim settled in on Dick’s couch while I made dinner in the kitchen. “Are you sure he won’t be mad?” Tim asked as he flipped through the channels on Dick’s TV.

“Have you seen the inside of the fridge? Dick hasn’t had a homecooked meal in over a week,” I replied, “He’ll be happy to come home to dinner.”

“Are you sure?” Tim asked.

“Do you want mac and cheese or not, Tim?” I questioned.

“Shutting up,” Tim replied.

I took the mac and cheese out of the oven and removed the tray of wings from the top rack. “He’ll be here any minute. I’ll put his plate in the microwave. Do you wanna eat now or wait for—? He’s here,” I whispered as Dick came through the door. “Hey, Dick. Surprise—.”

“Hell no,” Dick interrupted, “No, you can’t be here. You cannot be here right n—. Do I smell hot wings?” I smiled and nodded.

“But if you can’t spare one afternoon on your brother’s weekend away from school… I guess,” I sighed, “I have no choice but to take our dinner to the crappy motel down the street. Come on, Tim. Let’s see if that motel will let us rent a room for the night without an adult.”

Dick held his hands up, reaching for me before balling his fists and shoving them to his sides. “Fine. Stay,” Dick replied, “Hi, Tim. Sorry, I wasn’t expecting you guys.”

“It’s okay,” Tim replied as he checked his phone. He didn’t look up. Not even to acknowledge Dick. And I thought Tim would be thrilled to see him.

I served dinner, but Tim didn’t move from his spot on the couch. He was glued to his phone, which wasn’t like him during dinner. I set his plate on the coffee table and messed up his hair. “Earth to Tim,” I smiled. Tim looked up at me with big puppy dog eyes and showed me a news clip from an hour before.

“What’s wrong?” Dick questioned.

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t speak. I stepped out into the hall and called Bruce. He answered immediately. I didn’t expect anything less from him. “What’s wrong?” Bruce asked.

“I need your help,” I replied.

Bruce met me on the roof of Dick’s apartment at ten o’clock. “Likely, they’re still alive. Don’t worry, I’ll see what I can do—.”

“They’re his parents. I need you to bring them home safe,” I interrupted. My stomach was in knots. I couldn’t stomach watching Tim go through what Bruce, Dick, and I went through. It was no time for me to be prideful. I was scared and trusted Bruce more than anybody to find Tim’s parents. If he couldn’t bring them home, no one could. Bruce nodded in full Batman cape and costume… Like he was hiding from me.

“I’ll do everything I can. Stay with Tim… I’ll let you know if I find anything out,” Bruce replied. He reached for me but ultimately decided against physically comforting me. He disappeared into the night, leaving me with Dick, Tim, and my feelings. I took the stairs back to Dick’s apartment, quietly resenting Bruce’s lack of outward emotion. I knew he cared, but I wanted him to show it. I wanted him to be human with me for a moment. I wanted a sign that I mattered more than the mask he wore. That felt like an answer.

I sat beside Tim on the couch, nudging him gently. He laid his head on my lap, curling up there with tears in his eyes. “I should’ve begged them to stay home. I should’ve listened to you—.”

“Tim, this isn’t your fault. I called the GCPD, and they will do everything to get your mom and dad home. Okay?” I lied. Not to Tim. To Dick. “You should get some rest. Tim, I’m here with you.”

“There’s nothing to do but wait,” Tim mumbled.

“Mhm, but your parents would never—.”

“They’re your parents too… We’re brothers, remember?” Tim interrupted. Any words I had in my head were lost to me after he said that. I choked on every word I tried to say as he sat up, locking eyes with me. We were never more related than we were at that moment. United in fear of loss. United in helplessness. I was his older brother, so I swallowed it and pulled him into a hug so he couldn’t see how scared I was.

Dick glanced at me while he ate at the kitchen island, and I nodded. His phone rang, and he licked his fingers before answering. “Hey, Donna. It’s not a great time—. My brother and his little brother are here,” Dick answered. He swallowed hard. “A family emergency… His brother’s not mine. Yeah… I’ll let him know you asked.” I nudged Tim, and he stood up while I pulled out the couch. “Yeah… I love you too.” Dick hung up. “Jason, Donna wants to know if she can see you tomorrow morning.”

Donna and Roy were the only ones of Dick’s friends that came to see me in person when I was in the hospital. Donna thanked me once when she visited, but she thought I was unconscious. She thanked me for letting her vent when she wasn’t sure of herself. I never had the heart to accept her gratitude. Working with the Titans felt like it happened an eternity ago. I wasn’t the same person. I didn’t have all this rage back then. I wondered if she saw me—. I wondered if she’d see how quickly my insides rotted. I wondered if she’d see how far I’d fallen. I lost my hope, and all I had left was my anger, frustration, and stubborn desire to claw my way back to the person I used to be. I liked that Jason a lot better… And I think I was that Jason with Tim.

“Jason?” Dick asked.

“Okay,” I replied, “Did she say—? Was she just—?” I couldn’t ask him what I wanted to.

“She’s gonna flip when she sees you. The last time she saw you—...” Dick trailed off. I was half out of my mind. The doctors didn’t think I would make it, so they’d put me on morphine. When I could speak for myself, I had them take me off it. I couldn’t hear a thing she said over the pounding in my chest. I must’ve cried the entire time. I was a mess. I wished I was dead. I couldn’t look away from her, and she wouldn’t have let me. Everything after that was fuzzy.

I turned toward Tim, forcing myself out of that terrible memory and back to the present. Tim lay curled up without a blanket, asleep on the couch bed. “Dick, do you have extra blankets? Tim’s gonna freeze half to death,” I mumbled. Tim. I had to take care of him until Janet and Jack got home. I knew that’s what they’d want me to do.

Dick grabbed a few blankets from the hall closet and gave me two pillows before messing up my hair. “Are you ever gonna go home?” Dick asked.

“I don’t know, Dick. Even if I wanted to—. I don’t want to, but—. I’m never going to leave Tim. I know you don’t get it, but—.”

“You’re his brother, and you wanna look after him… Unlike—.”

“Dick, I don’t resent you. You had your own problems back then. So did Donna and Roy—. Heck, all of your friends were struggling. I get it... You came to the hospital. You joked around with me when that was the last thing I wanted… Because you knew I needed it. You don’t have to keep beating yourself up,” I interrupted, “And you don’t have to worry about me so much.”

“I know. It’s just—. It’s nice to see you smile again,” Dick replied. I half-smiled and nodded. “Get some sleep. I’m not going anywhere tonight.” And he meant it. Even though I couldn’t sleep, it felt nice having Dick there, watching from his chair until he couldn’t keep his eyes open. I got up and draped a blanket over him.

Then, I whispered something to Tim that I wished I hadn’t. “Everything’s gonna be okay.”
