I know I don't give enough attention to Juelz in Omari's origin story and getting artwork drawn of him, but I was just randomly in the mood to drop off some facts about Juelz. 😊

He grew up in Addison, Dallas, Texas.

Juelz had a little brother named Antonio who always looked up to him. With their parents constantly busy with work, the two boys were often left alone, making Juelz the default caretaker. When Juelz's mutant powers fully manifested, his parents were terrified, except for Antonio. His father wanted nothing to do with him and was even willing to hand him over to the Purifiers. However, his mother secretly took him to New York and left him at the Graymalkin Academy for Higher Education. Juelz doesn’t remember much about that day. One moment he was on a plane, then in a taxi, meeting strangers trying to comfort him while his mother spoke to the dean. That very night, his mother and brother left.

He no longer remembers his family’s faces—except for Antonio’s. On their final day together, Antonio clung to him, crying and refusing to leave. Juelz’s last memory of his brother is of him being dragged back into a taxi, tears streaming down his face as they drove away.

Scott Summers became a big brother and father figure to him, helping him adjust and make friends at the academy.

His bond with Cyclops is similar to Jubilee’s relationship with Wolverine.

Before Omari came into his life, the person he was closest to was Jubilee. When he was 16 and she was 15, he often tried to keep her out of trouble. (A bad case of oldest sibling syndrome.)

He began going on missions with the X-Men at age 16, serving as a combat medic. He regularly healed not just his teammates, but civilians as well.

In-universe, he was part of the Generation X class alongside Chamber, Gaia, Buff, Refrax, Husk, Jubilee, Monet (solo), Monet (twins), Maggott, Mondo, Penance, Skin, and Synch. He was taught by Emma Frost and Banshee.

He is one of the few survivors of the Genosha Massacre. He spent several hours trapped beneath rubble before being rescued by Dream-Eater.

Because of that experience, he developed a phobia of giant robots and is uncomfortable in confined spaces.

He's a skilled inventor and engineer, capable of designing gadgets and gear for himself or others.

Of all the heroes and mutants, there are a few he doesn’t vibe with:

Spider-Man – Thinks his jokes are corny and unbearable.

Wolverine – Dislikes his hygiene.

Johnny Storm – Can’t stand his ego.

Mr. Immortal – Owes Juelz $50 and still hasn’t paid him back.

Herschel Kelley / Krimson – Doesn't like his attitude and how secretive he is.

Basics

Cis boy he/him

At the start of the series, Robbie is 14, though there are a considerable amount of flashbacks where he's younger, especially to the previous year

Robbie has thick black hair that's short with bangs parted to the right with equally dark eyes. He has fair skin with some very light freckles and is about 5'6 with a thin but fit frame.

Robbie will find out he's bisexual soon.

Robbie is an ergokinetic, or energy manipulant, though this power in Alii mainly consists of energy absorption, expulsion, and conversion.

For all intents and purposes, Robbie is human, from the dimension Alium filled with superpowered humans, though he grew up in the suburban Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Character/Personality

Robbie is very energetic, friendly, and deeply protective of those he cares about. He's a master of getting more introverted people talking and connecting with them. He's highly intelligent though gets distracted extremely easily, and is impulsive enough on top of that to be considered a bit of a dumbass.

Robbie's interests are whatever he's focusing on for the week, though there are general things that run pretty deep. He likes playing video games and watching TV and reading books. Manga and anime make up a decent portion of his room and he has been known to stay up until 1 am as he binge reads a webcomic.

In school, Robbie is in a robotics class and in theater class. The former he loves anthropomorphizing the bots and making them cute little things, and making stuff from science fiction real is super cool. The latter, despite seemingly being an attention seeker, is more fun for him if he gets the part of a memorable side character. Sure, the spotlight is great, but he doesn't want to be the only person in it.

Robbie is a bit of a disaster when it comes to his internal monologue. He'll go on random tangent after tangent until he finally says something out loud. Acting on impulse can be dangerous, as those impulses are usually not practical and are deeply motivated by his emotions, which he isn't afraid to express. Despite his efforts to not do so, Robbie sometimes forces himself into a hero role that he doesn't truly want.

Other Notable Things

Robbie wears glasses with bifocals that he's had since he was in preschool. Usually, he'll wear a plain T-shirt and either a denim jacket or his red sweater he bought from the women's section because he liked the style. He'll also usually go with ripped jeans and also has some leather bracelets on his wrist.

Robbie has diagnosed ADHD and is on Adderall.

Robbie has a close relationship with his younger sister, Sammy, though the person he's closest to is actually Akash, whom he has known for the vast majority of his life, and their relationship is best described as either a QPR or platonic soulmates.

Avrò guardato questo video centinaia di volte, di continuo, e ogni volta penso QUESTO, insegnare è questa cosa qui e non riesco a trattenere le lacrime, perché chissà se un giorno Rayan riuscirà a costruire il robot che ha in testa e ad aprire un negozio di elettronica, se Mirko diventerà papa Michele I, come tanto sogna, o Jacopo farà il calciatore, e incontrandoli, ormai anziano, si fermeranno a salutarmi, mi vedranno, ricorderanno tutto e allora saprò d’avergli lasciato qualcosa, una briciola di vita nel taschino, saprò d’esser stato un buon insegnante e non solo un freddo businessman, pronto a lucrare su asineria e ignoranza per vile tornaconto, ogni bambino una fattura. Non so se sarei in grado di fare ciò che ha fatto Mr. Pigden con Ian Wright, in un mondo, il mio mondo, in cui le mele marce si sostituiscono al primo morso, perché troppo dispendiose. Chissà se sono ancora capace d’insegnargli qualcosa di buono. Chissà cosa ricorderanno un giorno del loro folle tonto maestro.

STARSCREAM ( Voyager ) Generations LEGACY UNITED Cybertron

C'era un volta la miniserie a fumetti War Within della DreamWave, dove tramite le magiche matite di Don Figueroa i classici personaggi dei Transformers G1 venivano ritratti per la prima volta con fighissime forme Cybertroniane, e tutti bramavamo di vedere prima o poi quei meravigliosi design tramutati in modellini. E venne presto il giorno, dato che per la versione di Galaxy Force / Cybertron di STARSCREAM, Hasbro e Takara si ispirarono platealmente al seeker grigio e rosso visto nel fumetto succitato!

Tutto bene quindi? Circa, poiché ai tempi Hasbro decise di farne una versione gigante Supreme di questo Astrum, snobbando il Voyager uscito normalmente in Giappone, da qui la difficoltà ai tempi di trovare la versione più economica tramite mercato estero piuttosto che non comodamente nei negozi di giocattoli e ipermercati vari come ancora si usava ai tempi.

Già personalmente adoravo l'originale, figurarsi ora dopo quasi 20 anni, ritrovarselo in una versione Generations per Legacy United, una versione che è pure il paradigma di come dovrebbero essere questi aggiornamenti moderni di classici del passato, senza magari scadere in errori o pigrizie tecniche varie ( Hot Shot, sto parlando con te!! )

Il ROBOT esteticamente infatti è semplicemente splendido, dato che che potrebbe passare tranquillamente per una Action Figure non trasformabile da quanto è armonioso nelle forme e misure. E la cosa risalta ulteriormente appena tirato fuori dalla scatola, dato che i moduli alati che finiranno sulle spalle e gli alettoni sono appunto staccati, e si assemblano sulla figura grazie ai soliti fori per armi standard appositi.

I moduli alati sulle braccia davano al robot originale un che di maestoso, quasi avesse un mantello che gli scendeva sulle spalle, mentre il Legacy odierno è più agile e longilineo, con spalle meno imponenti ma di riflesso con avambracci normali e non tozzi come il GF.

Ma il tocco di classe che da alla figura quel qualcosa in più è certamente la parte centrale del jet che non scende con la punta fino alle ginocchia ma si ferma al pube, e la cabina in plastica trasparente ora non più ad altezza "pacco" ma sullo stomaco come i più classici dei Seeker.

Magari qualche dettaglio colorato latita come il giallo sulle spalle o un po' di rosso su gambe ed avambracci, ma la scultura è eccellente, ed è davvero alto come Voyager, ben una testa più del suo precedente omonimo Armada di Legacy, e vale quindi lo stesso discorso fatto per Hot Shot sull'evoluzione dei personaggi nelle varie fasi della trilogia.

Notevole come il bacino possa ruotare nonostante la parte centrale del jet copre tutto il torso fino al pube, ed abbia pure i pugni che ruotano, e nonostante l'ampio uso di massa per accessori ed altezza, non abbia vuoti come nei soliti posti fastidiosi come interno dei polsi, cosce e polpacci vari.

E parlando di accessori, ribadiamo che i moduli sulle braccia non solo hanno le ali che si piegano, ma come per la gimmick dell'originale, vi sono ripiegate all'interno ciascuno una lama in plastica viola trasparente, così come dello stesso materiale è la CYBER PLANET KEY ed il fucile che cita quello sparante del Voyager G.F.: quello originale era un rettangolone nero un po' anonimo col missile viola trasparente, questo invece ha un design più ricercato con un paio di alette qua e là, ed è esso stesso tutto viola trasparente!

Ma di bello il fucile ha che tramite un apposita fessura posteriore vi si può sistemare la C.P.K., oltre che nella fessura apposita sotto la nuca. Ah, infine, a proposito della schiena del nostro Astrum Cybertron, i due alettoni posteriori possono ripiegarsi al massimo verso il basso, dando così meno fastidio possibile rispetto invece a come un po' rimanevano più larghi del giocattolo Voyager del 2005.

La TRASFORMAZIONE è, come ovvio, molto simile all'originale ma con qualche tocco in più, ovvero le braccia che si ribaltano all'indietro ma non prima qui di aver ruotato di 180° ed aver fatto rientrare i pugni, un pannello poi che dietro la schiena si apre per nascondervi la testa, e le gambe che ruotano verso l'esterno e si ripiegano mentre si solleva il torso, ma con i pannelli dei polpacci che si aprono. Ed infine gli alettoni posteriori che si uniscono nella pinna

IL JET SPAZIALE è sputato all'originale come aspetto, a parte magari la zona della cabina di pilotaggio meno in rilievo, o le strisce rosse ai lati di queste ( cioè quindi sulle gambe ), così come le ali sarebbero un po' piccole ma non ci si fa caso se non con un confronto diretto col G.F. di un tempo, dato che per la fisionomia ed aerodinamicità del velivolo sono della giusta misura.

Anzi, ironico come senza i moduli alati e gli alettoni, e con la punta ripiegata, questo jet ricordi parecchio l'hovercraft spaziale di Scourge G1! :D

Comunque, tutti i dettagli dall'originale sono al loro posto, pure un modulo nero dietro la cabina a mimare la testa del robot che era nascosta alla buona! XD

Visto da sotto non è male, anche se ha i due pannelli dei polpacci uniti come fossero un modulo di entrata d'aria per il reattori, ma forse era meglio se lo rendevano comunque più aerodinamico. Di contro, il fucile può sistemarsi lì sotto semi nascosto come nel Cybertron o anche nell'alettone verticale, ed il jet ha ( a parte quelli per i moduli alati ) solo un paio di fori sotto per eventuali armi aggiuntive.

Insomma, un ottimo modello con una bella trasformazione, un robot strepitoso ed un gran bel jet col solo inestetismo della "presa d'aria" sotto il muso, ma per il resto finalmente un Generations praticamente perfetto, fedele e che migliora il già bello e carismatico giocattolo originale!

In questi giorni è finalmente arrivato un po' di caldo e quale miglior modo per evitare le ondate di calore? Ma stando in casa, davanti al ventilatore, sparandosi qualche nuovo anime estivo, no? Ecco quelli che potremo seguire in simulcast su Crunchyroll, già a partire dalla prossima settimana! 

Di mio, per ora, ho adocchiato ovviamente Monogatari Series (incrociando le dita che l'adattamento sia fatto con la dovuta cura, visto quanto è sfaccettato di solito); Shoshimin che per un fan si Hyouka penso sia d'obbligo; Narenare e Mayonaka Punch per vedere se riusciranno a sostituire Girls Band Cry e La medusa non sa nuotare nella notte (non credo, ma i chad di P.A. Works si meritano una chance); Alya e Pseudo Harem per le doppiatrici e per una sana dose di romcom.

Runner up: Bye Bye Earth e Quality Assurance, visto che sembrano dei fantasy un po' diversi dal solito, VTuber Legend per vivere il paradosso delle anime girl che fanno finta di essere anime girl e Delico's Nursery, giusto per lo stile artistico, ma vedremo. Voi? Fatemelo sapere nei commenti!

in transit: excerpts from a notebook

Kansai Airport: Blind, free-floating within the warm gel of some exotic amnion, a sudden, gritty reflux obstructs a breath and I surface, choking. I claw the bedside table for an open bottle of mineral water. My lungs rasp as I try to suck in air.

I sit up on the edge of the bed and get my bearings by looking out through a sealed, double-glazed window. I never draw the curtains in hotel rooms; the view outside is often the only clue I have of where I am and, more and more these days, I wake in panic, not knowing. It is still well before dawn but darkness has given way to a grey luminescence that distorts the mile-long island of orange lights that is Kansai International Airport. Renzo Piano’s angular steel and glass terminal resembles a huge alien shipwreck in the middle of the bay. Small trains shuttle to and from it like parasitic robots, and the surrounding water  is black and unnaturally still, as if quelled by an oily spillage.

I arrived last night on a Northwest flight from Detroit, too late to catch the last train to Shin-Osaka and the bullet-train connection to Hiroshima. I tell myself I am on a business trip to give it a bit more specificity of purpose, but really it has more to do with compulsive nomadism than with commerce. I wrangle data, distilling from it information to barter with major corporations. What I do has no real job description, no locus, no regular hours and, I have to admit, no discernible outcomes other than it pays well. I could do it from anywhere.

The girl beside me doesn’t stir. Naked, lying on her stomach on top of the covers, her arms by her sides and her legs straight, her round face obscured by a tangle of long black hair, she could be a corpse awaiting autopsy. Her pale skin is as cool and smooth as antique jade. The slight epicanthic folds of her eyelids twitch but the eyes remain closed.

She is 23 years old, less than half my age, and in between flights we live together in hotel rooms and serviced apartments and the first-class lounges of major airports. Sometimes she returns to visit her mother and sister in the small house they share in Asakusa, in Tokyo, but maybe because she is so young, or she is sick of the lack of space or the burden of obligations at home, she prefers the fugitive life with me. She acts as my translator, not just of the language but of the oblique protocols that are intrinsic to every interaction with the Japanese. There is so much that I miss, or just don’t get. And not just  in Japan.

There is a slight surge in the pale blue-grey glow of my laptop’s screen as the open mail program downloads a dozen new messages. I check the list of senders. Only one of them is personal and it’s from a half-forgotten girlfriend, a film director from New Zealand: “There is something about you that has always intrigued me and also made me wary,” she writes. “I always wondered why someone who is so intelligent and sensitive to things could equally be so ruthless and without compassion. It was always a mystery to me and didn’t make sense, then I suddenly understood that you didn’t have the whole gamut of human emotion that one is usually endowed with, that you are cauterised in certain ways, that your chemistry means you bond differently.”

I decide to read the rest later. I use the hotel’s over-priced broadband to check my next flight, three days away, from Hiroshima to Tokyo, and reconfirm a flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles that will, in turn, connect with a flight to Dallas. My son’s 10th birthday is a week away and I have promised to be there to celebrate it with him, although I know already it will be another promise that I cannot keep. I sometimes have to remind myself that I have a family and that this hyper-mediated existence, in which my life is like flotsam drifting on the surface currents of interconnecting networks — multi-band cell phones, the internet, ATMs, credit cards, mail drops, courier pick-ups and deliveries, teleconferences, airport lounges and airline hubs, client LANs and extranets, regional offices, rent-a-car pick-ups, hotel chains, cable TV and pay-per-view movies that hardly change from country to country — is supposed to be a means to an end rather than an end in itself.

It is probably brought on by jet lag, but the cold tentacles of depression are constricting my brain, making it wearisome to process any thought more complex than getting out of bed. I keep telling myself that whatever it is I’m feeling is temporary, not to be trusted, just part of the rapid-cycling of the particular type of bipolar disorder I suffer. Within days, sometime hours, the fluctuating sine-wave of my labile mood will incline upwards again; right now, it is low enough to encourage me to be contemplative and not yet oppressive enough to cause me to be confused and withdrawn. I take 25 milligrams of a drug called Lamictil to counter it, on top of 2500mg of Epilim and a milligram of clonazepam a day. I feel like the medications coagulate as a sludgy residue in my system, decelerating my thinking but leaving me unassailed by the aggressive sieges or leaden shutdowns of unmanaged madness.

Even when my moods are stable, a part of my psyche still misfires with odd fixations or phobias or undefined irritations. But now I’m aware of them, I exert some control. I can act ‘normally’ rather than surrender to impulse. It’s as if connectors in my brain have found clean contact points and the jagged, itchy fuzziness of my thought processes have cleared.

The drugs have sharpened my perception of reality. But there’s a down side. Over the past weeks, I’ve begun to recognise that some of what I used to recall very clearly as personal experience is illusory, that my psyche has concocted delusional memories from random input, manic reconstructions of ideations and dreams (including other people’s) and roles I acted or compelled others to act out for me.

Which confronts me with the concept that I am not what I think I am: what I have and haven’t done, when, with whom, and where, all have to be re-examined in forensic detail to determine the true narrative.

Which is to say, reality is alien to me. Accommodating it is like trying to adapt to the atmosphere of a different planet.  Part of the reason I started a diary was to have a daily record, some way of keeping track.

Shin-Osaka: The 23-year-old perches barefoot on the edge of the “green car” seat on the Hiroshima-bound Shinkanzen, her toes curling like tiny, well-manicured, pink talons on the front of the seat cushion. She is gnawing at a rice ball.

All Japanese girls perch. Like fine-boned birds, they squat and balance on their toes while they smoke, drink takeaway coffee or suck up bowls of udon, or chat with their girlfriends who are perched alongside them like sparrows on a telephone wire. Some, alone, stare Zen-like into space or peer for hours at the small screens of their mobile phones, distractedly thumbing the keyboards. With the precise ease of professional acrobats, they teeter on the edge of street kerbs, steps, even metal railings.

There is a persistent frisson of tension between the 23-year-old and me, a cultural and generational dissonance that erupts occasionally in impatient, resentful spats that are only quelled by my silence. It doesn’t help that it’s hot, humid and it hasn’t stopped raining for days.

Japanese women are intricately neurotic, with all kinds of unpredictable fixations and prejudices sieved through the weird subordinate personas they adopt — innocent schoolgirl, servile drone, chirruping hostess, white-pantied sex fantasy — to relate with most men. I keep asking myself what I’m looking for in this young girl. Maybe it’s a form of emotional vampirism, needing young flesh and a relatively unjaded and pliable mind to stay my own self-negation.

Hiroshima: A typhoon is out in the Pacific, several hundred kilometres south of here. Ponderous, gunmetal grey clouds have piled against the steep mountains inland and the air is so dank it is hard to breathe. Cargo ships are sheltering in the lee of steep islands that litter the inland channels of the Seto Inland Sea, and oystermen are securing the timber rafts on which they farm before boarding their boats and navigating the maze of narrow passages back to the relative safety of small mainland harbours. There are still cranes pecking in the shallows of the muddy delta that intersects the city.

It’s so dark that it’s hard to imagine it is just after sunrise. We’re sitting by a window on the sixth floor of an automotive manufacturer’s headquarters, staring out across the rusted rooftops of the engine plant towards a dense cluster of suburban housing clinging to the side of a nearby hillside like a fetid blight. Below me, an empty parking lot, slick black and partly flooded, will begin filling with company cars during the next hour and then the whole building will stutter into a droning half-life of pointless busyness. We’re waiting for a herd of senior managers to turn up for a teleconference with their opposite numbers in the company’s United States subsidiary: a large monitor displays a blurry, out-of-focus image of the clock on the wall above our heads.

The earth tremor hits before they arrive. It is no more than 3.0 on the Richter scale, the television news reports later. Weak but prolonged, it begins as a low, resonating rumble and, within seconds, there is a curious, rubbery flexibility to the walls and floor. Then the furniture becomes animated. I wait for it to intensify but it gradually subsides and solidity is regained. I am a little disappointed that it wasn’t stronger.

Tokyo: The thing that surprises me most about Tokyo is the water. It’s everywhere. You come upon it in unexpected places: on freeways, where the high supporting pylons are driven into black canals that flow between the shadows of high office towers, or at the edges of new suburbs of glass and steel that float like refugees on low, flat rafts of reclaimed land. There are inexplicable, bracken inlets and backwaters enclosed by concrete dykes. And then, in the distance, there is the occasional glint of sunlight that, beneath the umber smog, reveals the infinite horizon of the sea.

The wet season has begun early, although it feels colder and less humid than a year ago. From my hotel window, the city is a ghostly silhouette beneath a pall of monsoonal rain, the grey clouds so low, they’re like shabby awnings strung between the rooftops of the nearby high-rise apartments. Everything is monochromatic, flat, except for the bobbing flow of umbrellas along the sidewalk. The city’s incessant throb is muted.

When I arrived last night, the upper floors of most of the buildings were just an eerie glow within ragged scarves of low grey cloud. The city felt like a futuristic battlefield imagined by sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison and rendered by an otaku game engineer. The 23-year-old and I checked into a suite at The Westin in Ebisu, a longed-for-relief from the shoebox dimensions of Hiroshima’s ‘business hotels’ and closet-sized bathrooms cobbled together with plastic laminate and injection mouldings.

This city is too conducive to the manic mis-wiring of my psyche. It’s too easy to be swept up in its unrelenting momentum, the raw energy of 30 million intense, tightly wrapped souls teeming through its arteries, the hyper-electric jolt of its too bright neon and plasma, office lights always burning, the visceral rumble of its streets — deeper, louder even than New York — and the heightened sensitivity to data swarming like tsetse flies in the ether around you, stirred up by millions of tiny CDMA phones. But there are times when I’m oppressed by the stifled emotions, the compressed sense of space and the contrary social protocols that combine to amplify the ever-present neurotic jitter that infects every minute of life here.

I will never really understand the Japanese, not even with the 23-year-old’s help. They are not unlike the English in some ways: both are confined to small islands and share an insular disregard for the rest of the world that is usually interpreted as xenophobia. They cling to worn-out traditions and protocols and avoid exhibitionism, while at the same time, they forebear eccentricity. They are both suppressed, uptight peoples, undemonstrative, even cold, but with a capacity for sympathy and unselfish kindness. They both have bad teeth.

Los Angeles LAX: The sub-dermal irritation I get from Americans these days flares like an allergy every time I’m in close proximity to large numbers of them: the obese mid-Western women with their bad perms and too colourful clothes, the cookie-cutter Gen-Yers with their skater T-shirts and baggy cargo pants and their dumb faux-ebonic chatter, the too tightly wrapped mid-level business executives and sales reps in Brooks Brothers knock-offs and badly fitting shirts. Between them flow the self-righteous, insular, God-fearing, thoughtless, uninformed, media-referenced monologues that pass for conversation these days: no-one listening to the other, everyone expressing themselves (because they’ve been taught that they should, no matter how dull-witted or ill-informed they might be).

West Hollywood: I’m like a spinning top at that moment before it loses speed and balance and topples on its side. Dizziness has overwhelmed rationality. I am on the net, teleconferencing over Yahoo! Messenger with my psychiatrist, 2500 kilometres away in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When I was in Tokyo, she wrote an email that instructed me to “focus on the things you can enjoy and try to capture a sense of wonderment about this strange land where you don’t always understand the spoken word but you certainly can understand things of beauty”. Now she is telling me to increase my dosages and seek help as soon as possible in Los Angeles.

I am holed up in The Standard Hotel with the 23-year-old who, like an unruly kid, has strewn her clothes among half-spilled files, notebooks, electronic organiser, mobile-phone charger, a tangled nest of computer cables and a laptop tipped on the floor. Her underwear is drying on hangers above the terrace door. Many Japanese girls suspect laundry staff of a fetishistic interest in their bras and knickers, perhaps with reason, and they insist on washing their own.

The nights are long when you don’t sleep. I have lost interest in the 23-year-old’s pseudo-innocence and elastic skin. I channel-surf the TV, clicking the remote several hundred times before my attention is arrested. I develop fleeting fascinations for golf, get-rich-quick real estate schemes, born-gain Christian sermons, rap music (especially if the video features big-assed mocha-skinned women in bikinis) and kitchen gadgets. I immerse myself in re-runs of ’60s and ’70s comedy episodes I know so well I can recite the dialogue. I watch the scrolling headlines on CNN at the top of every hour. Finally, it’s dawn and I’m released from the obligation to rest.

I wonder how long the 23-year-old will be around. Few people – and even fewer memories of them – ‘stick’ in my life. As soon as my relationship with someone or something is over, I erase it from my mind, a kind of emotional reset. I’ve erased so much from my mind that I’m confounded by how often and unexpectedly I come across blank spots, like the black, felt-tipped strokes of the censor on classified documents.

I read somewhere that the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick once argued that if two people dream the same dream, it isn’t a dream anymore — it signifies the existence of an alternative reality … The insane always occupy multiple realities: their internal narratives are always different to their actual or external experiences. For me, that can be complicated by the fact that, when I was unmedicated, which was for most of my 49 years, the character I adopted for one experience was very different to another that I adopted for a different experience somewhere else. The process was so compulsive that I would, for extended periods, devise a complex network of different characters and different lives in different parts of the world, with different relationships, then live intermittently in and between them, while blending them all into a fluid mutability that had the parallel narratives and multi-tiered options of a computer game. And the game engine was an invisible ‘real’ me, solitary, sentient and more than a little crazy.

These days, medication gives me the possibility of sustained reason, of a reliable perception of the present. But the same cannot be said of what I remember, so I am disenfranchised from my past, condemned to roam in search of a future. First published in Griffith Review, Australia, 2004.

maddox and grace teller were basically the romeo and juliet of the business world. their families were each other’s biggest competitions in the oil world, but they eventually fell in love and said fuck it and grace, being the bad ass she is, moved her assets into maddox’s company to surpass her own family by a large margin. their whole relationship was followed by the tabloids simply because it was juicy and because the oil world is kind of very boring, the tabloids were how they got their fame and standing. after they found out grace couldn’t have kids, they adopted goose. thirteen years later though, they ended up going to a party late at night with some other business friends and never came back. their case went cold but ... well ... it’s been ten years. nobody knows that grace and maddox went missing. a lie was fabricated saying that they retired and settled down in a small country and goose will help feed this lie from time to time to feel something and to now blow his cover.

𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 ↝ grace teller

miss grace ... absolute sweetheart. i always imagined that a lot of the traction the teller family had came from how down to earth and lovely grace was. she always really wanted kids and eventually found out she was unable to have them, so she ended up convincing maddox to adopt lil goose. she really was the best parent out of the pair, understanding what it took to raise a kid who was supposed to take over a large company while still wanting to give him a good childhood. and she tried ... she really did, trying to keep goose entertained at every banquet and pr opportunity and event that he was dragged to because a lot of the teller’s fame and business came from how loved they were in the eyes of the tabloids. really if it weren’t for grace’s efforts, goose would have lost his mind a lot earlier on. he loved his mom, he really did. his kindness and big heart comes from her, and the vast majority of his good childhood memories involve her. goose was very sheltered growing up so his mom was basically his best friend. they always got along and never fought, if anything grace was defending goose from his father who had way too high of expectations for the boy. they understood each other well and she never wanted anything besides the best for him and he kinda gets very emo whenever mom stuff is mentioned.

𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 ↝ maddox teller

certified <3 asshole <3 the man who goose got his elites legacy from so like ... it checks out. basically a very rude man. it was cute because grace could break down his walls, but if you were anyone else (and especially goose), good luck. growing up in a big business family, it was his whole life and he took it more serious than anything to the point where he was even reluctant to adopt because he didn’t know what kind of situation they would be getting in by bringing in a son who would be set to take over. worried that goose would be a #flop, maddox treated him more like robot than anything to prepare him for the business world and goose was like 7! being taken out of school early so they could fly to new york and goose could sit and listen to talks about oil for 8 hours a day because that’s what maddox really thought it took to get goose ready! (and shoutout to orion for being his one single friend that he made at these kind of events hehe). even though goose lost his dad when he was thirteen, they really never had a good relationship up until then. it was extremely strained and without grace in the picture, it likely would’ve been nonexistent or goose would’ve gone sicko mode on his dad and ended everything. while goose misses his mom a lot, he really ... doesn’t miss dad. as bad as it may sound, a lot of goose’s liberation came from losing his dad. part of the reason why goose can’t stand to be yelled at is because it always stung with maddox. i wouldn’t be surprised if how his dad treated him is also the reason that goose decides to ultimately turn on everyone and go absolutely buckwild. 

𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗙𝗜𝗚𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗦

𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗟𝗘 ↝ lionel teller

maddox’s brother and slimy ... slimy man. after his parents got yeeted, lionel took custody over goose and became his legal guardian. and when i tell you that lionel didn’t want that shit at all? i mean it. if it wasn’t for goose entering the family, lionel would have been set to fully take over the company (lionel ended up amassing the entirety of the company though by stepping in as interim ceo after maddox went missing and goose just signed the position over to lionel in the long run saying lol gl have fun i don’t want this so you can have it). ANYWAYS. lionel didn’t know that was all going to happen so he basically treated 14 year old goose like dirt, blamed his brother’s disappearance on him, all of that. goose didn’t like the man either and literally fought with him so much that lionel just shipped him off to boarding school and refused to let him come home over summers and school breaks. yes, lionel offered to pay families to take care of him instead and thank goodness he found the jeon’s (but we’ll get to them soon). lionel chewed goose out after he vandalized his school’s statue but still handled it at the expense of the teller name and has not talked to goose since he turned eighteen. there really was no relationship between them. they just didn’t get along and zoomed out of each other’s lives as soon as they could.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗝𝗘𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗬

when i say the jeon family was goose’s saving grace and his one chance to ever feel familial love again in his life? i mean it. goose hit it off with grayson in his first year at his second boarding school and the rest was history. the jeon’s ended up taking goose in, allowing him to stay with them over the summer and some school breaks and they truly were goose’s second family. grayson was his best friend, bestie for the restie yktv, but goose considered him a brother, and violet a sister too. goose’s life was extra messy when he met the jeon’s, but they were always a safety net that made him feel safe even if goose caused more wreckage than he will ever realize. 

going to put miss violet first ... his unofficial sister <3 they were friends growing up, had big “oh you’re my brother’s best friend” energy and goose really cares for miss violet so much. he probably teased her so much, pushed her into the lake too many times to count but he always gave her piggy backs and would save the best homemade popsicles for her. they got off to a rocky start at yale, a little cursed emoji at each other just because they weren’t sure how to act after grayson had ... you know ... zoomed to another country for sus reasons, but eventually got back to where they were this year when blackmails were starting to be exposed and they realized that they were basically each other’s family and that they needed each other. goose would go to any length for violet, he feels so protective over her it’s crazy. he will self destruct if needed to ensure that she’s alright and honestly is prepared to do it at this point. xo.

( tw : drugs, addiction ) okay now grayson ... word. the besties. the chaotic duo that everyone feared who pulled up to english class out of uniform. goose felt so comfortable with grayson, opened up to him about so much. seriously, before goose got twitter, grayson was just getting @twelvebugsinmybrain face to face every day. they would pass hot summer days laying on the floor in grayson’s room, waiting for the breeze to come through the window and being typical gross teen boys with a soft side. they really didn’t start chaotic at first, just sweet. however, things got a little messy when drugs came into the picture. full disclosure, goose was the one that got grayson hooked on drugs. goose truly had no idea he was doing it, just bringing back random baggies he probably paid a little too much for and they tried it all being the curious kids they were. goose was going through his own edgy phase and got grayson into his and ... well things just went south. they slowly started losing touch with each other as drugs were something that was always in the picture and goose was ready to confront grayson and get his best friend back to his normal self until grayson was sent away before goose was able to do anything. and goose truly regrets not talking to him a day sooner more than anything in his life so! yay! now that grayson is back though ... well ... goose is a little jealous of grayson’s new friendship with avery (yes i have to larp with myself) and really just wants his best friend back and he especially willling for it as grayson starts doing his thing. you’ll see ig. grayson is not my character but i will be ominous on his and mads’ behalf. that is all.

MAGMATRON ( Commander ) Generations LEGACY UNITED *Beast Wars Neo*

Inaspettatamente anche MAGMATRON, il leader Predacon di Beast Wars Neo, è stato ammodernato per Generations Legacy, guadagnandosi addirittura la classe Commander proprio per poter esprimere al meglio le tante caratteristiche del giocattolo originale del 1999.

Infatti è davvero peculiare la sua modalità alternativa, anzi, lE suE modalità alternativE, dato che non si accontenta di essere solo UN dinosauro, ma ben TRE separati, ovvero il PTEROSAURO Quetzalcoatlus, il TEROPE Giganotosaurus ed il PLESIOSAURO Elasmosaurus, chiamati rispettivamente SKYSAURUS, LANDSAURUS e SEASAURUS per distinguerli tramite gli elementi dove possono muoversi, altra bella idea pensata per il personaggio i tempi.

Ammetto che appena appresa la notizia dell'uscita di questo modellino, diedi erroneamente per scontato che sarebbe stato un Leader, così come i precedenti Megatron bestiali Generations, dato che nelle linee BW originali questi erano tutti degli Ultra, e sempre per quel mio pensiero che certi Leader e Commander debbano "riempire" adeguatamente le loro classi, ma a vedere i 3 sauri belli pasciuti mi son ricreduto, dato che il solo Landsaurus rivaleggia per stazza con un certo T-Rex viola di Kingdom, mentre lo Skysaurus quasi supera il buon Terrorsaur, laddove giocoforza le 3 bestie originali non erano così imponenti.

Oltre alla stazza, il trio di sauri ne guadagna in articolazioni … o meglio, a dire il vero erano già ben articolati di loro, nella media di quei tempi, e quello che guadagna davvero di più è il pterosauro grazie all'altissima mobilità delle ali, così come il teropode può muovere testa e collo ora, mentre ironicamente il plesiosauro passa dagli 11 balljoint del lungo collo del 1999 ai soli 4 del Commander!! ^^'

Suddetto collo vanta pure dei vuoti antiestetici, ma in generale il disguise nei tre è ben realizzato, soprattutto nel teropode rispetto al suo omologo originale, che era invece afflitto dalla presenza del petto del robot sul torso; le lame sulle ali del pterosauro invece sono un po' in vista, ma su quelle ci torniamo poi.

Sempre sotto l'ala sinistra dello Skysaurus inoltre spunta la spark Predacon, sempre come nel giocattolo originale, così come poi salteranno fuori anche negli altri due sauri sempre nelle stesse posizioni del modellino del 1999: davvero un altro bel tocco questo, non c'è che dire, ma arrivano tardi dato che tecnicamente sono già usciti per Legacy due modellini che avevano questa particolarità nella loro prima versione, ovvero Megatron TM2 e Tigerhawk… magari con quest'ultimo potevano rimediare, dato che è uscito giusto quest'anno, e quindi fa un po' triste, di rovescio, che questa gimmick trovi spazio solo in un giocattolo di classe Commander!! ^^'

Per fortuna c'è pure la modalità MAGMASAURUS, non confermata subito sempre nelle prime news sul Commander, ma ovviamente immancabile dato che appariva anche nel cartone animato: la fusione dei 3 sauri in un'unica creatura chimerica è simile all'originale, con lo Seasaurus che si apre ed ingloba la coda del Landsaurus, non prima di aver fatto uscire le "zampe posteriori" dedicate che altro non saranno che le braccia del robot, mentre lo Skysaurus si attacca sopra: se nel modello originale il pterosauro si apriva preludendo alla trasformazione nella testa di Magmatron, ora invece semplicemente si sdraia e ruota le ali di 180°, ma almeno non si "appoggia" solo ai due ma FRA i due, saldando l'unione del trio.

Da sottolineare inoltre come le braccia / zampe posteriori siano ripiegate e ruotino su un pannello apposito rispetto a come, nell'originale, semplicemente da dritte erano racchiuse nel Plesiosauro, così come questo deve già dividersi in due e poi riattaccarsi, mentre per il primo Magmasauro bastava che si aprisse a libro.

Giustamente fa un po' ridere ed è forzata come bestia anche fantasiosa, sopratutto negli occhi di un adulto, ma il Magmasaurus di sicuro era una bella aggiunta alla giocabilità per i bimbi dell'epoca! Qui il risultato è un po' più scadente a livello estetico rispetto all'originale, dato che la fusione era più omogenea e qui si vedono diversi fori e spazi, ma d'altro canto sempre grazie alle articolazioni gli è superiore, ed anche per via della salda unione fra i tre. Inoltre, è inoppugnabilmente un bel gran bestione, anche se il chimerico collega Commander Sky Lynx lo supera per stazza.

Passiamo ora alla TRASFORMAZIONE in robot, che vede innanzitutto togliere la serie di pannelli sotto il Teropode, che ne aiutavano il disguise, e ripiegarli per diventare l'elsa della spada, circa come nell'originale, solo che lì si toglieva solo il sottogola ( la lama anche qui poi è infilata nella coda )! Le robuste zampone si raddrizzano e dal loro retro saltano fuori le parti meccaniche, mentre i pannelli con le zampine anteriori si aprono ed abbassano, permettendo alla testa di ruotare 90° a destra ed ai due panneli che formeranno il torso di alzarsi e posizionarsi.

Fedelissimo pure come si trasforma ed aggancia il pterosauro, aprendo verso il basso il torso e rivelando la testa robotica, e quindi sistemandosi da dietro con poi zampette e muso della bestia che si appoggiano al petto del Predacon.

Infine, dal plesiosauro già diviso in due, la parte con collo e braccia si piega a libro, aggianddosi saldamente come schiena e con la testa del sauro marino che si appoggia fra spalla sinistra e capo del robot, mentre la parte inferiore diventa un enorme scudo da sistemare sull'avambraccio sinistro.

La figura ROBOTICA antropomorfa che ne deriva esprime al meglio quanto visto nel giocattolo originale, con robottone massiccio e solido abbellito dalle decorazioni quasi demoniache delle orecchie pipistrellesche, artigli sul torso e testa di simil T-rex come spallaccio destro, fra le altre cose!

I pochi difetti estetici peggiorativi rispetto all'originale sono la coda che è praticamente parallela alla superficie ( ma può piegarsi fino a 90° per lato ulteriormente alzata per non dar fastidio sulle mensole, almeno! ), l'elsa della spada già accenato sopra un po appesentatita, ed i pannelli sulle anche completamente assenti nel BW Neo del '99.

Ma per il resto abbiamo appunto un robottone grande e solido, e posabilissimo, nella media dei Generations odierni: la testa ruota bene nonostante le orecchione / ali, e queste appunto nel loro essere assai snodate possono sistemarsi in parecche posizioni. Ma sopratutto abbiamo le mani apribili sia nel pollice che nelle altre 4 dita, e pure il palmo si alza, per divenire delle zampe posteriori del Magmasauro convicenti: purtroppo i fori per le armi sulle mani sono bene in vista e non possono "scomparire" come in quelle rivoluzionarie di Jetfire Siege, proprio per il palmo che si solleva.

A proposito di altri colleghi Commander, il nostro come robot è più basso anche di una testa di un Op Armada nel suo super mode, ma ben più alto di un Ultra Magnus SS: ora, non ho presente bene le scale nel cartone di BW Neo, ma visto come "crescono" i vari BW nel cartone americano, il nostro dovrebbe essere come in realtà era giusto che sarebbe stato alto il Megatron TM2 Leader Legacy, e dato che è formato da 3 dinosauri non proprio piccini, direi che ci sta tutta, la sua stazza.

Sempre come altri Commander il nostro ha gli effetti sparo color viola, mentre nello specifico delle armi, abbiamo una signora riduzione rispetto al giocattolo originale: questi aveva l'elsa della spada che, con un'impugnatura dedicata, diventava una sorta di pistola, che sparava a molla non solo la lama della spada, volendo, ma anche i missili rossi sotto le ali dello Skysauro e quelli grigi dello Seasauro.

Qui invece quest'ultimi sono completamente assenti, e sebbene l'impugnatura per esigenze di trasformazione possa piegarsi i 90°, l'elsa non può essere impugnata come pistola, o almeno non da Magmatron per via delle sue mani con pollice, ed anche se fosse, le due lame rosse sulle ali dello Pterosauro manco possono sistemarsi a mo' di missili, quindi sono state pensate come delle spade gemelle in più per questa versione.

Infine, le pinne frontali sullo scudo erano pensate come una sorta di arma a tenaglia, grazie al meccanismo a molla, ma qui senza molle fanno semplicemente scena e basta. ^^'

( Un po' misteriosa la sagoma incavata nello scudo / stomaco del Plesiosauro, a forma di viso, ma forse è solo una rientranza della struttura e amen ^^' )

Ciònondimeno questo Magmatron è davvero riuscitissimo, con ottimi dettagli dipinti sino alle unghiette del Teropode, per non parlare della scultura della faccia digrignante come l'originale, ed è quasi un miracolo che un personaggio potenzialmente così di nicchia sia stato commercializzato normalmente e non sia stato dato in pasto ai vari crowfounding Hasblabbici, cosa di cui ringrazio sentitamente la provvidenza!

Magari non è per tutti, vista la sua natura da "Triocon" ed il predominio delle parti organiche delle bestie su quelle robotiche, ma di sicuro con siffatto aspetto ha un carisma innato considerevole, perdendo davvero poco nel traslaggio dal giocattolo originale alla versione Generations ed anzi guadagnandose assai complessivamente. E semplicemente come robot o nei suoi singoli sauri fa un sicuro figurone nelle mensole di chiunque, senza che se la prenda troppo il bistrattato Magmasauro!^^

Intelligent, shape-morphing, self-healing material for soft robotics

Advances in the fields of soft robotics, wearable technologies, and human/machine interfaces require a new class of stretchable materials that can change shape adaptively while relying only on portable electronics for power. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed such a material that exhibits a unique combination of high electrical and thermal conductivity with actuation capabilities that are unlike any other soft composite.

In findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week, the researchers report on this intelligent new material that can adapt its shape in response to its environment. The paper is titled "A multifunctional shape-morphing elastomer with liquid metal inclusions."

It is not only thermally and electrically conductive, it is also intelligent," said Carmel Majidi, an associate professor of mechanical engineering who directs the Soft Machines Lab at Carnegie Mellon. "Just like a human recoils when touching something hot or sharp, the material senses, processes, and responds to its environment without any external hardware. Because it has neural-like electrical pathways, it is one step closer to artificial nervous tissue."

Majidi is a pioneer in developing new classes of materials for use in soft matter engineering and soft robotics. His research team has previously created advanced material architectures using deformable liquid metal micro- and nano-droplets of gallium indium. This is the first time that his lab has combined this technique with liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), a type of shape-morphing rubber. Majidi and his research team collaborated with LCE expert Taylor Ware, a professor of bioengineering at the University of Texas, Dallas, and his graduate student, Cedric Ambulo.
