Robe à l'anglaise (between 1720 and 1780)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robe l'anglaise
There are two main characteristics that distinguish the robe l'anglaise or "tight-back" gown from the robe à la Française. First, while both have a silhouette focused on expansion at the hips, it was achieved with the use of delicate gathers, not panniers. As a result, the English gown has a less extreme silhouette.
The second attribute that differentiates the robe à la Française from its English counterpart is that the robe l'anglaise had a fitted bodice and back, rather than the 'sack back' of the robe à la Française with its box pleats, sometimes referred to as "Watteau pleats" .
Both styles featured skirts that opened in front to reveal a petticoat. Both also featured a funnel-shaped bodice. The English gown sometimes showed variations of the bodice as shown in the yellow and green gown below.
And speaking of "Watteau pleats", below is a painting detail from a work by the Rococo master himself, featuring a pink robe à la française. See my post on the robe à la française here.

1700s WOMEN - PART 2
Lace as a luxury was carried over from the 17th century, used as a status simple for the wealthy to flaunt. From the mid-century on it migrated to the neck in the form of delicate chokers, which were a fashionable alternative to traditional jewelled necklaces. As hairstyles became larger hat styles became smaller until they were discarded altogether for a time, followed by extremely large hats that accommodated the curls, plaits and frizzed hair beneath. Right in the middle of the 18th century, we have this absolutely frothy pink gown that screams springtime. Yellow bows? Sign me up!
If there is a timeless shape, I'm willing to bet it's this one. Though this doesn't have quite the volume of some of the dresses in this period, it still endures again in the 1830s and 1840s, the 1870s and 1880s, and then again in the 1950s. A fitted bodice, a 3/4 sleeve, and a flared skirt. Plus that gorgeous scoop neck.
This robe à la française was owned by Mrs. Maria Altenburg of Denmark. It then had some adventures of its own, showing up later in Victorian Era costume parties! So it's likely it's had alterations. Most dresses of this era have.
I love the floral spill and the ribbon details! Really marvelous on every level. I am obsessed.

Hatsune Miku trend but make it 18th century Europe, lead foundation included! I love all the cultural Mikus so I wanted to draw some historical outfits for her :>
This is a weird amalgamation of the robe a la polonaise and robe a l’anglaise. I hope it’s not too inaccurate.
Also pls excuse the sketchiness of the whole drawing 🥲

Okay, so this is interesting. I’ve found a court suit dated to 1770 at the Mint Museum that looks a lot like the outfit worn by Carlo Buonaparte, Napoleon’s father, in this painting.
I don’t think it’s the same, though. But it is fascinating to see the similarities. The painting of Carlo Buonaparte is dated sometime between 1766-1779.

Robe à la Française, Part II
Tumblr media
Fig. 1: Robe à la française • 1730-1740 • © Stanislas Wolff / Paris Musées, Palais Galliera
When I was researching the Rococo fashion era, I collected so many images and I have to share some of my favorites. It's not so much the style of the Robe à la Française that I like (though I do very much like the box pleats and drape of the back) but the fabrics, colors, and patterns. Fig. 1 shows a gorgeous print in a beautiful color combination. Such a print for a dress today wouldn't work very well, as contemporary dresses don't have the volume of the 18th century styles, nor the lovely draping in the back of the Robe à la Française.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Robe à la Française was derived from the loose negligee sacque dress of the earlier part of the century, which was pleated from the shoulders at the front at the back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Metropolitan Museum of Art • 1760-70 • Silk, cotton
The silhouette was achieved with a funnel-shaped bust joining wide rectangular skirts. The wide skirts were supported by panniers and hoops constructed from cane, metal, and baleen. Fig. 2 shows a portrait sitter wearing a Robe à la Française with a contrasting underskirt.

In the early century wigs for men were long and flowing, but come the mid century hair tied back, often with curls covering the ears, became the trend. Styles became shorter and tighter as time progressed, until long hair completely went out of style by the end of the century. CC links and reference images under the cut.
