I love love loved puppet Zelda in tork, one of my fav parts of the game!!! I’ve been thinking about that part a lot for the AU,,, some stuff:

-Puppet Link doesn’t struggle with talking like for example here! He talks smoothly and without cracks

-Zelda realizes extremely early that it isn’t Link (bc bad vibe yk)

-I was thinking it’d be cool if when Puppet link transforms the castle room, Zelda like gets her old princess dress on (but I’m not sure, because then her weapons would be gone and she kinda needs them amiright)

-I think the scene where that transparent Ganondorf appears above puppet Zelda is goofy af so I’m changing it to puppet Link talking, his voice changing to Ganondorfs and then him transforming into phantom Ganon (the voice lines should be roughly the same though)

I might add more as I come up with cool stuff (or if you think of anything cool!)

Okay no, this needs to be it's own post and I hate it for that. But I'm taking a mental heatlh break from horror film judging for the moment as it is.

“Fuck…” Bill murmured, sour-mooded as his yarn-made hands tried to close his eye in vain. Said eye wasn’t even real, just a copy of the original made of the fur of farm animals which worsened his already downtrodden attitude.

Who could blame him, though? Several hours of staring at the ceiling in a glaring contest that was rigged in his favor from the start should be banned in every dimension for how boring and thought-provoking it was. By thought-provoking, however, he was referring to the insufferable but still useful mental link he shared with Shooting Star.

Dreams of sugar, synthesized music blasting everywhere, and stereotypically aesthetic boys should be the norm every night in her head. Welp, the high levels of glucose had diminished quite a lot; he could feel it. The neon colors had subdued, the noise toned down to a tolerable scale if someone else had entered her dreams, and the erratic energy flowing through her subconscious had slowed down to a generic children’s play time.

In other words, Shooting Star had been peeling off those unpredictable layers that made her who she was. When did it start? He had no idea, and no, it’s not because he didn’t know but because he couldn’t give a shit about it. The girl was just another step in his plans to get out of the dimension and plan Weirdmaggedon somewhere else.

Still, he’d rather have her reliving her cliche romance with that mermaid whose name wasn’t worthy to remember than to feel all these… These… Ugh! These counterproductive, hormone-induced, overdramatic emotions and the myriad of fragmented memories that her subconscious decided to glue to HIS own memories as if that’d be an amazing idea!!

Wait…

Glued to his own memories?

Oh. Oh no.

Oh, shit! His memories! If she ever gave a peek at one of them, she’d never let it go! Shooting Star would weaponize them or tell her family behind his back!

Shit, shit, shit!! Why didn’t he see this coming? Using a mental link? Such a wonderful idea that now had him between the sword and a hard place!!

Unless…

Ok, then. He wasn’t a master manipulator for nothing. Just derail her from the classified information and ta da! Problem solved!

A sudden burst of luck surprised him as he heard Mabel move, her face facing the triangular plushie vessel, her legs hugged tightly, and a few sniffs escaping softly from her. Was she crying or starting to? Is it because of the dreams? It’d better be her own dreams and not his, but if it’s the second option then there was no choice but to edit her memories again.

“Ehem,” he fake-coughed. Her face turned around at a half; despite the darkness, Bill could notice the marks of tear tracks and some puffiness on the girl’s eyelids and around the eyes. His suspicions were confirmed. “Problems with nightmares, Shooting Star? Before you ask, though, that wasn’t me.”

“Mmmm…” She turned around, fixed on the window at the right side of her bed. Some of the moonlight trespassed the curtains, barely illuminating the floor and the borders of the window. “For once, yeah.”

“What gotcha in your mind, kid? Wanna tell your old pal Bill?”

“We’re not friends.”

He blew a raspberry, walking to sit at her side. “Hey, you help me, I help you. Isn’t that part of our deal?”

“How would you help me? I thought nightmares and misery were your favorites.”

“Not if my partner-in-crime isn’t on the same vibe as me. Is this because of Stanford? Relax. The force field in Gravity Falls won’t be a problem. I have my ways.”

“It’s not about that,” ‘I’d be relieved if it weren’t that you’re so close to other people’s business.’

“Welp, you aren’t in the mood for sleep time anymore, and I don’t need to sleep. Not that I can either with this vessel, so… Wanna share some stuff to pass the time or are you going to stare at the window hoping to get blind?”

“…You wouldn’t understand.”

‘Not that I care.’ “Try me. I’m the all-seeing, all-knowing eye. Those titles aren’t empty.”

“…”

“What? Nothing at all?” She nodded. Marvelous! She’s closing herself off! “Come on, kid. Look, if we’re going to be a team we need to be honest with each other. Didn’t you want me to be honest about the deal and my feelings?” The last word tasted like rotten eggs but he quelled the disdainful tone.

“I told you. You wouldn’t understand.”

“You’re underestimating me, Shooting Star,” he said with a slightly offended tone. Fake, of course. “I have more knowledge than those flimsy libraries of your world. Heck, even your entire dimension!”

“…”

She wasn’t budging. Fucking amazing, this was just like Stanford after he found out the Nightmare Realm was behind the portal! Now what? Psychological torture was out of the question, it would attract too much attention. Telling her a funny story? She might ignore him.

It was so frustrating! He knew what bothered her but saying so would reveal the holes in the mental link he’d planned to keep secret!

“…Ok, fine, you win. Wanna know why all the questions? I’m bored! I don’t sleep, I don’t need to, and I even can’t in this body. The eye doesn’t even have an eyelid, by the way. So either I keep staring at the ceiling, watch you stare at the window, walk in circles in your room, OR talk with you, and of all the four, the last one is the most entertaining. Happy now?”

“I’m not.” The urge to strangle her increased tenfold. Sure, kid, sure. He wasn’t either!! Much worse, she made this so difficult!

“Yeeesh, Shooting Star, you’re acting like the Void. You know how it is when you’re stuck there, right? Empty, dark, silent, eternal. At least your room has decent stuff to entertain yourself with, why don’t you try?”

“I’m not in the mood, Bill,”

He couldn’t believe he was going to do this; however, the consequences of this dream of her behavior and the possibility of her remembering HIS memories would devastate all the progress he had made.

“Listen, you don’t trust me, we don’t like each other, but what else is there to do? Bottling it up? At least if you don’t want to be reminded about it, you can pour it onto me, then we make a new deal. I will play dumb about this conversation and you can do the same. This way whatever happens here will never get out.”

Mabel glanced at him in disbelief mixed with anger. He’d be preoccupied if it wasn’t dulled by exhaustion.

“Are you playing therapist? Because I don’t buy it.”

“Then try to sleep again. By your face, though, I bet you don’t want to.”

“…And I bet you would fall asleep if I told you about my dreams.” Aha! Some progress!

“You won’t know if you don’t try. Besides, this is so not you, ya know? So unmabel-ish.”

Her eyebrows shot upwards as she regarded him like someone would a person who accidentally solved the most brain-cracking riddle in the history of riddles.

“What? Why that face?”

“You… You said my name.”

“Uh, no? I said unmabel-ish. Unless you have been hiding from everyone that that’s your real name.”

“You said it. I heard it. You just added some stuff into my name like when I said sugar-ish sometimes or make up some words because I don’t know how to describe something.”

“Ok, fine, Mr. Technicality. So?”

“You’ve never called me by my name. Grunkle Stan and Ford are the only ones you refer to by their name. Why?”

“What’s so wrong about nicknames? Shooting Star fits you so well. Chaotic, energetic, unpredictable, whimsy, ethereal, radiant, out-of-control, creative, weird.”

Mabel’s face contorted in a mix of displeasure and confusion. “Now I’m 50/50 between you being fake flattery and Pyronica being right about your opinions about me.”

Damn it, Pyronica! Those things were private!! What part of the memo didn’t she get?!!

“Don’t get too cocky, kid. Just because I’m stating facts about your potential and personality, it doesn’t mean I’m gonna applaud you every time you get a golden star in school.”

“…Will this be the only time you will call me by my name?”

“What? Is a nickname not good enough for the princess?”

“You also used my last name but on a first-name-name basis never.”

Bill wished he could roll his real eye. They were wasting time with the name-calling non-existent issue when the most relevant matter relied on her dreams that for some reason got stuck to his memories!!!

“Oh, and I bet you’re going to say ‘Not fair, Bill! Why can’t you have the decency to call me by my name!’”

The brunette merely shrugged. What the fuck would it take for her to react the way he wanted to?! Aaarrrghh!! Alright, alright. Time to be more, ugh, emotional.

“Do you know that the name Mabel means ‘lovable’ and ‘dear’?

Her face questioned him as if he was trying to prank her. Gotcha!

“It’s not a joke, kid. Those are the meanings of your name. Pretty lucky, uh? Shooting Star and Mabel fit with you like a ring to the finger.”

“…Mom told me once that Dad liked her idea of a name for me: Mabel… One of the few things they agreed on… Not anymore, though… Not since…”

“…Since…what?” This might be it. Slow, tiny pushes, nothing too intrusive and she will spill the beans so he can figure out how to derail her mind from his memories.

“…The divorce…” The softness of her voice made it almost impossible to hear; however, that single word confirmed what he had seen in Pine Tree’s mind about the constant fights between their parents. Not that he cared; Shooting Star’s mind must stay away from that melodrama because it was glued to pivotal information.

“What about it though?” He inquired. His yarn-made legs swung like a pendulum and his gaze absorbed every reaction of her. “They don’t stop being your parents.”

“I told you you wouldn’t understand.” She raised her voice a few levels. Thankfully, it wasn’t a shout. Her mood served as a dampener to the anger etched on her words. “Do you even have parents?”

She knew. She knew, she knew, she knew! She fucking knew!

Hold on, if she did the question would be unnecessary. Ok, damage control, now!

“Pffft! Family! Who needs them anyway? Either they betray you or you get tired of their crap. Piece of advice, Star, don’t rely on idiots who will never throw themselves into the fire for you. Your family isn’t the first nor the last example. Stan and Fordsy are too stubborn to talk like real adults. Your brother follows an adult he barely meets like an attention-starved puppy. Your parents grew bored of each other. Same old, same old.”

Sniffles erupted from her lips; Mabel hid her face behind her knees. “It’s not fair… It shouldn’t have been this way…” she shook due to the sobs, quelling her cries as best as she could which Bill considered wise because her father banging on the door due to an unknown voice -AKA him- was the last thing he wanted to happen.

Cool, problem solved he guessed. Leaving the conversation like that meant hearing Shooting Star bawl as a baby for emotional nonsense and even if she fell asleep later, her dreams would be muddled by those pesky emotions which would turn into nightmares of her dumb family which were still glued to the classified information. Oh, let’s not forget that being so depressed also interfered with her performance in his plan.

Ugh, of-fucking-course, of all times, now he had to be the babysitter!!

“Come on, kid. I think you are being too doom-ish,” he started, patting her back softly. Perhaps too softly but he preferred that to accidentally scaring her. “Pine Tree is in Gravity Falls, so what? It’s not that he hates you. You still talk to each other, right? That’s thousands of leagues better than Stan and Ford’s case.”

Mabel glared at him, pushing him roughly. “You don’t get it!” She managed to exclaim this time. “My whole family is falling apart! Grunkle Stan and Grunkle Ford hate each other, Grunkle Stan is homeless and alone, Dipper left me, my parents pretend the other doesn’t exist anymore, and I’m completely on my own!!”

“Shhh, shhh! Don’t wake your old man!” In hindsight, telling an emotionally overwhelmed teenager to shut up wasn’t the best move for Mabel grabbed and threw him to the window.

Both, but especially him, were lucky there was no mess as a consequence; Mabel turning her back on him made a few pieces of broken glass look like a walk in the park.

“Kid, come on. Your brother doesn’t hate you. And you can still visit him.” A pillow was thrown at him. For fuck’s sake, she’s being so dramatic for nothing!!

Climbing the bed proved to be such a hassle that made him wish for his levitation powers. The girl had turned herself into a quivering, sob-wrecked ball, covered by half of the bed sheets. Fantastic! First the classified information issue and now this drama!

“Shooting Star, you’re much better than all this crying,” he approached at the pace of a snail, careful to elicit another violent attack. The bet sheets moved, wrinkling around her. “Look, you think Pine Tree will have a blast forever cooped up with Mr. Know It All? News flash, he won’t. Remember, Specs? McGucket? He was your uncle’s assistant and now he lives in a dumpster and his wife is a freaking raccoon. A raccoon, Star! I bet you all my power that in the end, the kid will regret his choice and want nothing to do with mysteries. That is if he doesn’t end up crazy like that hillbilly first, am I right?”

Mabel buried her head deeper into her legs. Aarrrgghh!! What would it take for her to be in a more useful mode?! Seriously, he’s all for nightmares and other’s misery as long as it doesn’t mess up with his plans!!

“Ok, fine, you got me, Shooting Star,” he began, forcing himself to spit the next words. “Maybe… I… I don’t… understand…” A tiny gasp escaped her, she peeked at him, distrusting his tone. What? Did she expect her to—? Ugh, whatever. “I don’t… understand… And before you ask,” he added the last part quickly, “what I don’t get is why wasting your time lamenting that the others have forgotten about family and…feelings?” Yuck, feelings! “You care a lot. Too much for your own good. They can’t see it or don’t care anymore. If they don’t, why would you keep waiting for them to change their minds? Trust me. My home had nothing to offer me, it was stifling and boring, so I left everyone behind.”

Second time. Those two words echoed in his head as he gave his speech. The second time that topic had to be shared with a stranger, to a Pines! But it would be worth it this time, it’d better be.

Mabel seemed to let out a whine but from the tone of it, it resembled the sound of “uh?” than anything else. Her eyes, almost hidden behind her knees, sent him a silent message: what do you mean?

“What? Do I have something in my face now?”

“…I-I thought… You said the Nightmare Realm was where you lived…”

Oh. Clever observation. Ha! Well, that was easy to fix.

“Kid, I’m older than your universe. I’ve seen places that could rival your wildest dreams. I’ve met people so complex not even your boundless imagination could replicate. The Nightmare Realm is just the place where me and my friends felt at home. Unruly, chaotic, savage. No rules to tear us down. It’s normal. I mean, do you expect to stay in the same place until you die?”

This time, her face exited the hideout of her legs. He sensed the curiosity beneath the pain from her family drama. Juicy, exploitable curiosity.

“…So… You were never born there?”

Bill cackled. “Nah, though that sounds amazing, and wish it had happened.”

“Where were you born?” Ok, no, he took it back. This curiosity wasn’t useful anymore.

“Trust me, Shooting Star, the place is nothing special. It’s as convoluted as that game Sixer and Pine Tree love to play. In fact, it was so square-minded that it was called Math, Math & Way More Math by the governor. Pffft, what a joke. Thankfully, I found a way out.”

“That’s why you’re a triangle? Everything there is geometry or science?”

“Yep!”

“…Don’t you miss it?”

Bill cackled loudly, slapping his yarn-made knees and mimicking Mabel asking such a question. “Oh, kid. I didn’t know you were a comedian.”

“I’m serious.”

“Nope. Not at all.”

Her facial expression went from solemnity to shock and—wait, was it him or did he see pity? The brunette leaned over as if inspecting Bill, searching for an answer that would be satisfactory.

Not a chance, Shooting Star.

“What do ya wanna hear? A touching monologue about the intricacies of a place that is more shallow than a pond? The only good thing about it is that it spawned ME.”

There was no response from her, just the same melancholic eyes and sorrowful frown whose source of sadness came from him. Annoyance bubbled up at such an expression. He didn’t need pity, compassion, or any of that sentimental shit!!

The topic should be where it was supposed to be: a trunk buried in a desolate place where no one could find it. Hell, if he had no self-respect, he would call Stanley and tell him to sail or drive to the other extreme of the world to hide this nonsense!

“…It’s sad, though…” she finally answered which felt like a slap to the face. “Even if I were to settle somewhere else, I wouldn’t be able to forget the place where I was born.”

Sad. Her opinion about HIS business was that it saddened her.

Pitiful.

HER OPINION ABOUT HIS BUSINESS WAS SAD!!! That’s what!!! She didn’t know anything!!

Bill sighed, or more like struggled to. His hands fought for freedom to give the brat a lesson but he quelled the violent urge. The plan is to make her feel better so the classified information and his plan are safe, nothing else. Whatever she considered sad about him, it was just her brain looking for excuses to distract itself!!

“Kid, I think what would be sadder if I had stayed there forever. I was born to be wild, not bound. Take it as another piece of advice for the all-seeing, all-knowing eye: if a place is bad for you, leave it. And seeing that your nickname is Shooting Star, of course, you would be happy to be free and not inside four walls.”

“…I guess…”

My winning band recommendations from my 72 hour power metal fixation adventure

Plus other opinions I don’t have near the knowledge to have, various other thoughts and a link to Spicy Metal Takes: the google sheet; or, Girl who has only ever listened to Trans-Siberian Orchestra listens to other metal for the first time: Getting a lot of "Trans-Siberian Orchestra" vibes from this

I've never really listened to metal before. But Kenny got me listening to Versailles, and suddenly I'm considering for the first time in my life that I might like metal, or at least some metal. Then a couple days ago I got introduced to Gloryhammer (by a random suggested reddit post I think?), and then Alestorm. Very amused by the existence of incredibly seriously presented dwarf legend and pirate music, I combed threads of related bands, and someone recommended Rhapsody of Fire.

Here's the other thing you need to know about me: I love Trans-Siberian orchestra. Like, really love. I listen to TSO on repeat from September to January of every year. Few things on earth inspire the joy in me that Wizards in Winter does. So when I hit play on that first Rhapsody of Fire album and got hit with...well, Rhapsody of Fire, my whole world shifted on its axis. You're telling me this whole time there's been more Trans-Siberian Orchestra out there, without the Christmas, and I just didn't know about it because I don't listen to metal?

(this is why I am forever seeking out new music - statistically, the thing you are going to love most in the world is something you've never heard of yet)

Completionism, autism, and an academic fascination with music in general, and hungry for more of this magic, and the next thing I know I'm on Encyclopedia Metallum, Reddit, and Apple Music, scrolling related artist lists and suggestion threads collecting the very best of power metal. It ended up being so many bands I had to make a spreadsheet.

I've spent the last couple of days working my way through the spreadsheet and taste-testing all of the recommended bands. I figure out that the term for what I enjoy is Symphonic Power Metal, so that was my focus. My criteria was fairly simple: do I enjoy listening to this, would I listen to it on purpose, and does it make me start stimming happily the way TSO does.

So here's my fixation-fueled list of recommendations. I'll include a link to my actual google sheet at the bottom so you can all read my spicy metal takes and maybe laugh at me if you like metal and think my taste sucks (which it probably does, and I absolutely do not care if you think so).

RHAPSODY OF FIRE - If you like books with maps in them, can I interest you in a band who put maps in their CD BOOKLETS?

And their approximately 27 related, spinoff, and reboot bands. If you want to get into Rhapsody, check out this illustrated guide to the ROFECU (Rhapsody of Fire Extended Cinematic Universe) that a kind soul made on Reddit here. There is a huge controversy and drama among fans of the band about which is the "real" Rhapsody but I absolutely could not care less. They're all good, don't worry about it.

A film score orchestra handed several electric guitars. TSO on steroids. I don't even know how to do ROF justice in description alone.

Compositionally stunning, complex, gorgeous, orchestral and symphonic masterpieces overlaid with power metal, prog rock, and sometimes medieval music.

Here's the icing on the cake: ROF live for the concept album, and their dozen-plus album discography comprises at the moment 2 complete (and a 3rd still being actively recorded) Lord-Of-The-Rings level fantasy sagas told over 3-5 albums each, complete with MAPS IN THE CD CASES. These guys are NOT FUCKING AROUND. There are multiple long reddit threads and google docs detailing the plot outlines and timelines of each saga, including this 201 page behemoth. I've only scratched the surface here and I genuinely can't remember the last time I was so excited to have so much of something still ahead of me.

TWILIGHT FORCE - Can I copy your homework?

We're not Rhapsody of Fire, we promise! (and I mean this as a compliment.)

Twilight Force is a newer band, and therefore have a bit of a newer sound, but it's the closest thing to ROF out there - probably not by accident, since one of the band members was in one of the ROF spinoff bands. I haven't dug into their lore yet, but the music is spectacular, epic and sweeping and gorgeously composed.

VERSAILLES - Immortal vampire neoclassical VKei with a twist of Gender

If you haven’t ever heard of Versallies…now you have.

A really incredible, absolutely delightful visual kei band with a commitment to their very self-aware bit that takes them to the next level, Versallies make incredible, headbanging, neoclassical metal. Lead vocalist Kamijo has one of the most incredible voices you’ll ever hear, and the whole thing is enhanced greatly by their visuals - sumptuous costumes, full on anime hair, an a general Victorian-meets-rococo aesthetic that takes gender performance to a space of high art. There’s lore for the band too, but I don’t speak Japanese at all, so I haven’t gotten to all of it yet.

MALICE MIZER - high art VKei pioneers

90s Visual Kei band Malice Mizer are the foundational text of much which came after. You can really feel the effect of Dead or Alive’s Pete Burns here (who, legendarily, had an influence on the emergence of VKei due to his popularity in Japan) and everything happening is just beautiful. The least “metal” of everything on this list, Malice Mizer have more of a metal-flavored new wave sound. I highly recommend checking out these guys’ filmed concerts - the visual is half of the fun with VKei, and the number & broadness of the influences here is incredible - you can feel the push and pull of classical music, new wave, prog rock, metal, rococo aesthetics, goth, mime - it goes on and on. I haven’t gotten to spend as much time with this band as I want, and I feel like there’s more to understand, appreciate, and analyze than I’ll ever have enough hours for.

ALESTORM - Pirates. Yaar.

What do I even say about the kitsch pirate band other than that they’re a pirate band. And they’re…really, really good. Sea Shanties in metal form, metal music full of accordions, aggressively Scottish, and delightfully committed to theme. It's hard not to smile listening to this.

AVANTASIA - Opera Time

More rock operas than albums.

The other close-to-a-TSO clone on this list, Avantasia make symphonic rock operas. Another band I need more time with, there's some REALLY good stuff here if you like rock operas (which, clearly, I very much do).

KAMELOT - Pure Power Metal

Slightly less symphonic than the other choices (though there's still some violins in here), Kamelot is a more metallic and classic rock/epic rock sound with some killer vocals. There's something a little dated about their sound, but I mean that as a compliment.

POWERWOLF - Dad music

There's something delightfully 80s about this sound. Feels lifted directly from classic rock. This is your dad's music, and I mean that as a compliment.

STRATOVARIUS - Barely not Journey.

These guys go back and forth between being metal and sounding like Journey, but it's good. I approve.

AYREON - The English language is insufficient.

It feels like no matter which song I put here, it's going to be wrong - because no single song you listen to is going to give you a good picture of whatever the hell Ayreon is. The songs have a metal influence, but every song feels like a different genre - I would describe the overarching genre as closer to Prog Rock, but oh man, it is all over the place. The strangeness and all-over-the-place nature of it is fascinating. I was gratified to find that my inability to describe or even decide how I feel about this band is reflected in the band's actual Wikipedia article, which includes this incredible comment from a music reviewer:

"Idk man this shit defies description."

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Epica - Incredible operatic vocals combined with black metal growls over a heavily orchestral metal background.

Opera Magna - these guys really only have the one album but it's heavily classical and really good.

Fairyland, Deridian, Dragony, Dark Moor - All very similar sounding "symphonic power metal but not quite as good as ROF"

Sabaton - some really good power metal around historical war themes. Well made, but I am not super interested in the thematic content so it doesn't hit.
