Rogue/Gambit Week 2024

Hey y’all!

It’s time for what y’all have been waiting for—Rogue/Gambit Week 2024. We’re looking forward to a great week celebrating our favorite Southern couple. Here’s the information you’ll need to participate.

Yes, fic, art, and edits are the most common, but I’ve seen amazing fanworks accomplished in other ways. In our fist year a short video was shared concerning what Gambit keeps in his pockets. In another fandom, I’ve seen someone share why a particular musical score reminded them of the couple. I’ve seen people make text conversations between characters focused around that day’s prompt. Handcrafts, music, photography, cosplay, and countless other creative ventures can also be part of a fanworks week. Have fun creating. Please feel free to share your talents and Romy-love with us.

Notes: Each chapter is a different ‘genre.’ Chapter 5 focuses on our Hallmark Movie theme, though the whole story is a fun read. While the chapter begins (and ends) with a framing device which is part of the greater story plot, the chapter does work as a standalone.

Notes: If I could choose the way Rogue and Gambit the live action universe, it would be in a Leverage-esque series where Rogue and Gambit pull off heists and cons in order to help those who get taken advantage of by the rich and powerful. From time to time, they are joined by the Thieves Guild and their closest friends—Storm, Nightcrawler, Wolverine (Laura and Logan). When I read this fic, I felt like it would be a perfect episode of this show.

Notes: Like “Fourteen Ways to Fall for You,” each chapter is a different universe. This was also another fic I read early in my Romy journey. It introduced me to many different worlds where we might find Romy (some worlds are comics adjacent while others are created out of whole cloth for this fic).

Quick content warning for the Matrix chapter - there’s some Rogneto and cheating. The OTP is definitely Romy, but Rogue is ‘technically’ in a relationship with Magneto, so your mileage may vary.

Sci-Fi - Pacific Rim

Summary: “Routine missions” are a joke to anyone remotely connected to a Skywalker, but if really shouldn’t include Anakin and Ahsoka getting caught by pirates and escaping with the master bounty hunter that caught them in the first place.

Or: Remy Lebeau, better known as Gambit, had never been one for subtlety; when he wants something, he rarely lets petty things like laws and common sense get in his way. If common sense said kidnapping Jedi and selling them out to pirates after siad pirates tried to kill him for cheating at gambling was a bad idea, he had no intention of listening to it.

Or: The only people with worse luck than the Skywalker lineage are X-Men. Rogue planned on spending her week freeing prisoners, test subjects, and slaves from a bunch of lame space pirates. The plan did not work.

Or: Post X-Men: Evolution Gambit and Rogue in Clone Wars.

Notes: This fic appears to end at Chapter 17, but the fic is marked as a WIP. Take that as you will.

War Film/Period Piece

Summary: X-Men AU. Emma Frost runs Division X, a classified squad within the secretive Special Operations Executive based in London. It isn’t their job to win the war, only to save those they can. But when the mission takes a turn for the worse, Emma and the team must decide if they cut their losses, or fight twice as hard to bring everyone home.

Notes: Romy is a secondary couple in this fic, but I do enjoy and highly recommend it. I read this early on in my Romy journey and this fic has always stuck with me.

Day 4 - Fantasy AU

Remy (Tiefling Thief/Warlock) grew up an orphan in the streets before being recruited into the local thieves’ guild. After a job gone wrong causes him to be exiled, he was approached by his patron and granted magical power in exchange for specific artifacts he was tasked to steal. Anna-Marie (human monk/spell thief) ran away from home and trained as a monk before being taken in by a seer and a changeling, who had foretold her potential abilities to steal other people’s magic to use as her own. Circumstances managed to bring them together, and now they’re on the run from both sides of the law, hoping to find refuge with a mysterious guild who call themselves the Knights of X.

Their outfits are loosely based on the ones they wear in the Otherworld in the Excalibur storyline of the comics. Spellthief is a homebrew DnD class which is pretty self-explanatory, you can copy spells other people have performed and use them yourself. I picture Rogue’s monk subclass as the Way of the Long Death to give her the vitality absorbing powers. That’s all I have for now. Happy Romy Week!

Day 5 - Noir

It didn't take long for the hard-boiled southern detective, the best in mississippi and in town, Anna Marie to clue in what has happened. The crime scene was never a clear cut road at times. Friends and foes are never staying, always changing.

"Remy."

The figure turned around, his long coat danced to the wind's whim. "Mon petit chou-fluer. What brings you to New Orleans?"

"Shut it, Remy Lebeau." The country girl is in no mood for games. "Ah only need to hear some things from you."

"First you tell Remy to shut up, then it's time to talk? Mon Cheri, you drive a confusin bargain dere, no?"

"Y-Ya'll know what ah mean!" Anna spoke. "Ah just need answers. About the pile of bodies in the bayou."

Remy scratched his head, sighing. "A skirmish between the Theives and the Assasins. No spoilers on how that turned out, cher."

"Aaand, ya'll not in it? You are one of them Theives, are you not? A man of your word and honor?"

"Not anymore chere. Ah gave my honor to them because at first it be protectin our own, now it's been one killfest after the other. Gave my life and my honor, my years for something i thought was family."

"Ya'll opened your eyes now?" She blinked.

The Cajun smiled. "Hit a dead end in Remy's life. Remy had to change one way or the other, or else Remy gon end up like them."

The detective just grinned. "Ya'll aint as stupid as ya'll act."

"Life never is kind to the weak and to the fools."

"And what are you?"

Remy thinks about it. "A fool who survived, a fool who's learning, a fool who jus had his heart stolen. By a detective, no less. Remy's been a fool all his life, fooling others just go get some grub. But, Remy thinks you saw more than what ah let on, cher."

"Believe me. Ya'll aint slick, yer silver tounged devil."

"Has Remy Lebeau tempted Anna Marie at least?"

"He has. So shut your face and kiss me, Pretty cajun boy. Ah ain't letting you be alone. Not on mah watch."

Rogue and Gambit's first date revisited ❤️

Remy was poling his pirogue down through the bayou when he found himself suddenly snagged. Rising up from the murky waters was the form of a beautiful maiden clutching the end of his pole. 😏 Remy startled, his instincts telling him to stay back! This was no maiden, but one of the bayou’s deadly merfolk who swam these waters luring men from the safety of their boats. To but touch her hand was to be pulled beneath the surface to certain death. As he looked into the maid’s imploring moss-green eyes and caught her wistful smile, her beautiful face framed by locks of auburn and white, he considered that to touch her, however briefly before succumbing to her doomed embrace, may well be worth it. @roguegambitweek Mermaid prompt!

Legacy

A few of our prompts this year make specific reference to the comics. We know that not everyone has read the comics (there are a lot of X-Men comics out there) and we don’t want anyone to feel left out.

So, without further ado… Legacy.

First, as the prompt is written, you can create your fanworks around the concept of legacy—of what a person leaves behind, their long lasting impact on the world. This could be children, inspiration, etc. Or, it could even be a meta exploration about Rogue and Gambit’s impact on comics, the X-Men, or any other medium they’re in. Feel free to play with this concept of legacy.

Now, if you’re interested in the character of Legacy, read on.

In 2011, there was a X-Men Legacy/New Mutants crossover event called ‘Age of X.’ In this bubble, alt-universe, dystopian world, Rogue goes by Legacy.

As Legacy, she’s present whenever another Mutant dies. She absorbs them, preserving their memories and, in a way, memorializing their lives. Because she mostly appears when Mutants die (and there are quite a few deaths since they are being hunted to extinction), other Mutants begin associating her with death. They call her Reaper, a name which she despises and continually asks them to not to call her that. Due to various reasons, Legacy spends most of her time alone, or sequestered in the Fortress.

This is a lonely existence for Legacy. And here enters our hero.

Gambit does go by Gambit, although he uses a long rifle instead of cards. One of the first times Legacy and Gambit meet, he calls her Legacy (her preferred name). When she asks him why he is helping her, he proclaims, “I don’t even know, chère. I saw you fighting, is all. And I knew what side of the fight I wanted to be on.”

Anyways, they go on a quest together to discover the truth behind the contradictions of their dying world, share a few romantic moments, and are willing to lay down their lives for each other. Even though they just met, they work together like they’ve been partners their entire lives. Truly, Romy are the OTP across the Multiverse.

In the end, they save the day and everyone is returns to the regular 616 universe. Most participants in this bubble world choose to forget about it, but Rogue retains Legacy’s memories.

The entirety of Legacy’s appearances occur in the AoX arc and for once, it is relatively achievable to read the entire crossover. Below is the reading with the essential Romy moments bolded.

Rogue/Gambit week day 6, theme: Space Adventure

Blame my followers for this they made me have to do another prompt for this week loooool

 So instead of going out into space for adventure space brought the adventure to gambit in this case it’s a dragon Ball Z and X-Men crossover au! Rogue is a saiyan warrior, a race of alien monkey men enslaved by the Cold empire to destroy planets to resell later. She was sent to earth by lord freiza to destroy it, but like all saiyans who end up on our little blue planet and live to tell the tale, she is immediately smitten with an earthling and the food of earth and switches sides to be one of its protectors instead, as the first person she runs into is Remy, a Cajun man who moved to Japan(as thats the only place saiyans seem capable of ending up) to set up his five star traditional cajun restaurant there. He ends up discovering her crash landing after an evening of stargazing. Upon meeting this warrior sent to end his world, his first instinct as any good southern boy is to give her a warm welcome and offer her food, and her fate was sealed from there. Deciding to change her name from Routa to Rogue to fit in better on earth and hide her past from any visitors, she now lives a mostly quiet life of adapting to human society, trying all the good human food saiyans cannot resist, teaching martial arts to precocious young earthlings, enjoying romantic outings with her husband (aside from nights of the full moon), and occasionally protecting the planet from invaders, and Remy is here for it!

RIP Toriyama. You were awesome.
