dylan taught naomi how to draw when they were younger, and now she’s a better artist than he is. he takes her to a lot of shows, mostly ones that are in somebody’s basement. the alternative music scene in their shitty hometown is surprisingly good. she helps him practice his comedy routines and lets him know what jokes work and which ones are “fucking terrible.” she can be harsh sometimes, but he’s glad she’s not afraid to voice her (brutal) opinions when it comes to that or anything else he does. she never hesitates to call him out.

their favorite thing to do has always been going to the beach though. naomi hates swimming in the ocean, but she thinks it’s pretty. says it’s a good place to reflect on things. that’s how she transitioned the conversation into confronting him about his drug habit that he hadn’t been hiding as well as he thought he was. he didn’t know what to say, but he also didn’t want to lie to her. he could tell she was already trying to not cry. she told him she’s known for a while now, but there was a small part of her hoping she was wrong. but she knew him better than anyone. she could tell something had been different about him. he was still dylan, but he wasn’t always “there.” anymore. sometimes he’s so strung out he just nods off mid conversation. she noticed the track marks. at first he’d only shoot up around his legs, but he was running out of veins. he started poking his upper arms. those ones were the most noticeable.

she told him she didn’t think any less of him, she knows he’s hurting. but he needs to get help. at first he got defensive, said he’s tried to stop using a few times but it was too hard. he got really sick without it. he said he was really gonna try to quit for good soon because he was tired and wanted to get clean. naomi immediately shut him down. told him he couldn’t do it on his own and he needs to toughen up and get his shit together. she said she’d be there for him in anyway he needed her to be, but she really needed him to get help. she didn’t wanna lose him and she’d never forgive him if something were to happen to him.

neither one of them said much after that. they both sat there for in silence for a while staring at the waves, until dylan let out a quiet “i’m sorry.”
