Al-Qadim this week! As the name implies, Golden Voyages (1992) is as inspired by the Sinbad stories as it is Hollywood’s adaptations of them (particularly Ray Harryhausen’s). This slim box set details the Crowded Sea, its islands, rules for nautical adventuring and a lengthy campaign. There’s a screen jammed in there too. Its a lot of stuff!
The ship rules are interesting. Most TSR-era ship rules (none of which are compatible) consist of ship attributes and rules for knocking them into each other until one sinks. Here, the ship is characterized less like a weapon and more as a combination of NPC and base of operations and even a tool. It’s an interesting, adventure- and roleplaying-focused approach and I like it quite a bit. There’s no combat rules at all — the campaign doesn’t need them, but I still would have liked them.
The campaign structure is interesting. It is very modular, defined by a loose framework of departure/journey/return. Where the players decide to journey determines their adventures. The plot centers on the retrieval of a great treasure for…reasons. Both the treasure and the reason, though, are customizable, with suggestions keyed for a variety of play styles. Thus, the treasures for power gamers clearly increase the power of their characters, and thus the lure of the adventure, and puzzle-focused players will get puzzle-focused prizes. This is one of the earliest examples of an adventure explicitly catering to play style that I am aware of!
There are some cool monsters, too — coral people and giant crab people. As with just about every Al-Qadim product, Karl Waller provides gorgeous interior art that suits the setting well. I’m less sold on the Easley cover, though.

Basically, finding confirmation you don’t have to use the Weave to cast, that’s just the most popular and best understood method, has been groundbreaking for me

Fell in love with Al-Qadim setting wile I was dm-ing one-shots for my friends, so when we all decided to play again Curse of Strahd - I coldn’t resist urge to make character from Zakhara  She call herself Isra, but in reality they are another person, Rana, who kinda possesed this dead body of their master, beloved and friend. It’s all complicated. But Rana still in this picture in person too - look at this weapon in hand and say hi :^)

Hunter Black Page 82 - Boldo's Teeth
It’s been too long since we introduced a new locale, and it might be a little while before we introduce the next one. Will and I love finding new personalities for new places. Boldo’s Teeth is named for the pair of mountains that curve over the town, and that name comes from a D&D campaign that I played in from the bygone 1990s. The reference to “Al’Dahani” slavers is taken from the name of one of the PCs in that campaign, who was an al-Qadim character, if anyone remembers that 2nd Edition setting, the rules of which we folded into our own.

Suara Pembaca Al-Qur’an Tidaklah Qadim
Suara Pembaca Al-Qur’an Tidaklah Qadim

Old UK RPG Dragonroar of Standard Games... any info about that... ? Thank You
Tumblr media
The single biggest point of divergence between the tabletop game culture of the UK and the US is that, in the US, tabletop gaming and military wargaming split apart from each other in the 1980s into two completely different animals, and in the UK, the two remained attached together much more closely. Games are still made that appeal to that audience of nerdy ex-military dads (as opposed to college age youth, the default assumption of a game audience). The ultimate example of this is Warhammer, put out by Games Workshop, but GW also made Dragonroar, the first British fantasy game ever made, which was essentially a box, map, and miniatures.
To modern eyes, Dragonroar is a strange animal, and not just because of the (alright, we all see it, so let’s just say it) giant “War Hedgehogs.” It’s because it’s not clear if it’s a miniatures game with rpg elements, or an rpg that leans hard on the miniatures.
Tumblr media
Dragonroar was Games Workshop’s first game (in fact, the first British RPG of any kind, a unique historical status), and it’s interesting to consider an alternate timeline where the thing with the War Hedgehogs was the huge hit that GW is known for, maybe the same timeline where Sega's mascot is Alex Kidd instead of Sonic, and Matt Groening is an underground cartoonist mainly known for Life in Hell. Because “overshadowed” doesn’t begin to cover it, does it?
Tumblr media
Remember, Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons and Dragons, started off as an avid military wargamer and ex-military guy, as were members of his original Lake Geneva group, including all those who’s PC names are immortalized forever (Mordekainen, Bigby, etc). The place of “original contagion” where D&D started to be popular wasn’t college campuses (that came later) but military bases, where it was seen as an extension of war gaming.
Tumblr media
It’s interesting: I’ve long suspected that Birthright, the AD&D massive wargame and miniature setting, was created so there would be an AD&D setting just for the UK audience, since my friends who are UK gamers seem to love Birthright and view it as foundational, whereas Americans barely remember it, even when they have crystal clear memories of Spelljammer and Al-Qadim.

Fav canon largos character? (Would've said NPC rather than canon but a solid chunk of them are enemies technically so ehh you get the idea)
Okay so hands down my favs are Kenut and Nikare! While Sayeh Al Rajihd is like Zafira's great x10 grand niece, I haven't yet written their interactions yet and thus i cnat say that shes my fav but shes up there.
With Kenut and Nikare however, [context for non raiders they are the second boss's in wing 6 called "The Twin Largos" and their fight music slaps and you should listen to it here] me and a friend made up so much fucking lore for Kenut and Nikare like a year or two ago. Made up how they got captured by Qadim, what they did to pass the time in their pool/arena place, alternative endings to if they lived, alternative endings as to how they go on if the other's killed before they kill the raid group etc. We even had/have look a likes of then them that we'd take to World Bosses, and without fail we'd get recognized on Fire Ele and Fire Ele alone.
i wish i did more PoF raids so i could see them more bcs they're what sparked my love for largos
here's some old ass art i drew of them aeons [2years] ago:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used to have this old HC that some Largos had non human kinda bat nose and that female largos had gnarly huge teeth that sometimes resulted in lacerations to the lips. You'll see that I carried that last HC into Zafira's story/design xd kinda miss the bat noses but I enjoy her large arched nose too much to change it, tho maybe if i make another largos I'll add that

The more D&D stuff I read, the more I feel relief and maybe a little enthusiasm when I see Rick Swan’s name in the credits. He’s a reliable writer who almost always delivers solid material that lands squarely on the premise. Such is the case with Caravans (1994), the final box in the Al-Qadim line. The last handful of products strayed from the central theme of Arabian Nights-inspired adventure, but Caravans returns there for the curtain call.
There are multiple djinn, for instance — I might be forgetting some, but I think the last three boxes has one djinn appearance between them. One TOTAL. That’s not enough djinn! Further evidence that Caravans returns to the unusual source material: the first scenario is called “The Talking Tent” and another scenario involves a giant skeleton flying on the back of a giant skeletal roc. There is a fortune-telling carpet. It’s pretty great, even if it is still fairly events-based. It doesn’t really have an adventure frame, either, other than these all take place in caravan-friendly regions of the high desert. Which is a relief! Most of the latter box frames felt perfunctory anyway.
Karl Waller is on point as ever. His giant skeleton riding giant roc is one of the most ridiculous illustrations in the entire line but he somehow manages to give it the same weight as all his other work. Not feeling the Fred Fields cover though. Not entirely Fred’s fault — the banner and the djinn’s eye are just…I hate that overlap. It isn’t entirely NOT Fred’s fault either. That camel’s proportions seem…strange.

❛ how is it you always know what i need, huh? ❜
𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐬: no longer accepting.
“Nothing pairs half as well as a wizard and observation—well, if you forego a Waterdhavian guild hall and thrilling debate, of course.”
He smiles. He always looks like that when he does, doesn't he?, as though he's swallowed down a meadow with its afternoon bees. It affords an ease in their silence, a mercy tinged golden to the doe of his eyes, and with Gale sat beside her, his book pried open, something, a sensation, tugs close to home.
And—merciful gods above—what an incredible word: home. It's the mother to comfort, the cousin to safety, and the well-loved sister to refuge and warmth. Yet, as far as the wizard's aware, their darling tiefling wouldn't know of them. In fact, with her half-wrought memory so thoroughly worn, she might dream it in flashes of haunt and terror. Or technicolor nightmare. And curdling yowls. Home to Morgana has been a rot-damp tourney, a paltry dwelling to rest her bones; however, Gale, patient, endeavors to change that. He snaps his fingers. Igni warms their camp.
How pleasant. "I'd be a rather poor friend had the idea of joining you never impressed itself upon me, and an even poorer one to ignore it," he explains, brow wrinkling. "Besides, I'm well acquainted with that look you've been wearing all evening. It's crowding, believe you me, to be alone with one's thoughts." Incredibly so. Absently, Gale tucks a lock of hair behind his ear and returns to fingering a word. "In their place, I thought you'd enjoy a riveting narration of The Prince of Al-Qadim. A sound choice, to be frank. Happy endings suit you. "

I have a sneaking suspicion that, when they wrote the Al-Qadim setting, they got barber confused with b*rber, and that is genuinely hilarious to me
