oh dear angst 😭 i think ex!bakugo might be the angstiest one i've come up with so far!! (which is currently being developed!! it's the next long fic i plan to finish) i like me a good hurt/comfort but when it's just hurt no comfort 😖 i'm weak !! my heart can never take it !!!

Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?

i can only really read a major character death if it's canon, and even then it's really hard for me to!! my heart really can't take it!! like i know the writing's gonna be good but i just... i'd be a complETE MESS. like. unable to recover 😭 i've written mentions of character deaths but not during... the process... of it... i cannot tolerate... anyone's death i think... 😭 my loves must stay alive with me... 😭

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

yes so many fanfic writers i adore!! for col especially, i mentioned @seravphs and @augustinewrites as being main influences for the way i chose to write gojo!! i think i base it more on their versions of characters (bc characterisation is big for me!) than other things like writing style etc. other influences i have are: for gojo --- @/saetoru (bc of rb!gojo), @/hawnks; for bakugo --- @/willowser, @/ofmermaidstories, @/bakughosts

those are just off the top of my head!! and writers i am silently admiring from afar :') i'm sure the influences will change for every version of each character i plan to write though !

i associate my mutuals w their very distinct ways of writing our faves too!! (lowkey appreciation post ahead!!)

@stellamancer - for expert dialogue n banter between reader and gojo (unnamed fic verse) i go thru niku's stuff so quick bc the conversations flow so well!!!

(if u dont like hello kitty then pretend its someone else like Melody or Cinnominroll or Kuromi or whatever) i looked into the mirror and i saw..a whole different version of me..dark hair, red eyes, and horns (like tords but longer aka eddsworld character i simp for but ANYWAY-) … what happened to me..? and there was blood on the side of my face then…i felt a sharp pain in my back..and blood came out my mouth and everything darkened….no..i cant..die..Mario.. Peach..Rose…Daisy.. Luigi…? am i.. dying….? then everything went black..

I'm really curious about what Roma has going on with Osybus, how much he knows, how much you know... I am very eye emoji about it in general. Especially the significance of the increasingly? invisible limbs? A rad looking effect to be sure, but also hmmmmmm. (Also I saw it was your birthday recently! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!)

WAH HELLO!!!!!!!! THANK U YES IT WAS (SPINNING HEARTS EMOJI) ROMA’S THING WITH OSYBUS IS A REALLY DEEP VEIN (I personally like it a lot because it naturally interacts really closely with many of Roma’s deepest fears, desires, coping mechanisms, and personal beliefs, and as a narrative device and mechanical plaything I couldn’t have asked for anything better) 

As a general ask “what’s roma’s thing with osybus?” is one of the most pandora’s box-y things you could’ve asked, so I hope you don’t mind if this is a bit wordy and like, ALL over the place.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

Fast answer first: We (OOC party and IC pcs) believe that Osybus originally was part of I think Sessinek, or at least a larger being, and that he’s connected to the amber temple in some way. We also think that we released Osybus when Roma shattered one of the artifacts at the death house, but that’s a theory. Roma also has no idea how Deep he is in with Osybus and enters any transactional interaction with the idea that it may be his last, but I know he’s a little over halfway to being so far gone my DM takes him as an NPC. 

GENERAL BACKSTORY, Osybus is the headfriend (I don’t know the term for it but we just call them headfriends) Roma contracted with during the Feast in Vallaki. We were literally fighting for our lives in front of the church of St. Andral and things were looking pretty grim; a lot of the party was either fully missing or really badly injured, and Strahd was about to land a coup de grace by luring Ireena outside of the safety of the church via killing the party member she was in love with, our druid healer. In a last ditch effort, Roma used his turn to beg Strahd to make a deal with them to spare them, but Strahd very coldly refused because “there is nothing you could give me I would want,” and Roma was devastated. 

It was after that second Osybus contacted Roma in his mind, that he was Osybus the Immortal and that he could save them. Roma initially asked if he could save the whole party but Osybus said that was beyond his power, and that Roma could only choose one person for this gift. Roma was torn, so he decided to ask Osybus what Strahd wanted the most. 

“The girl.” Osybus answered. 

“Then he can’t have her.” Roma replied. “I pick Ireena.” And then Osybus killed Ireena!!! (Ireena was fine tho, and then not, and then worse, etc etc you know how Barovia is) 

Roma’s relationship with Osybus has morphed over time, starting from gratefully deferential due to Osybus “helping” Roma out so often and also due to Roma not having anyone he could turn to for assistance or companionship for a stint of time, to eventually pettily and one-sidedly antagonistic on Roma’s end due to VR’s warnings and some subsequent bad deals. 

That being said, despite it all Osybus is usually the one Roma turns to whenever he feels trapped and cornered, because Osybus’ power to grant wishes is often Roma’s only ripcord in situations where the options left to him are usually death or worse. Osybus has also been nothing but obliging and polite to Roma (though he has shades of sounding like, possessive), which makes interactions all the more sticky since Osybus has such a strong hold over him. 

The ghost limbs are one of the penalties from wishes from Osybus! Roma usually takes some sort of penalty whenever he makes a wish, and since I had some troubles with the original way Osybus’ penalties manifested (rot and decay) my DM kindly changed it to make his limbs translucent, with increasing transparency the more wishes Roma makes. He also has trouble leveraging their strength now that they're translucent and doesn’t have a shadow anymore! 

One of the last things to know about Roma is for a long time, he didn’t consider himself to have many strengths, but one he Did have was a VERY solid sense of self. He understood what he himself wanted, innately and always, and was really decisive about wholeheartedly pursuing whatever he believed was right (even if he was Really Not.) 

More recently, Roma also has begun to realize he has a lot more to gain in the world now that VR is back in the picture, and wants to spend whatever time VR has left to just, hang out with VR. When the adventure in Barovia ends, the first (and honestly, only) thing Roma wants to do is visit Van Richten’s greenhouse. He wants it more than anything in the whole wide world!! 

However, both of these things are now in jeopardy, since Roma is now So deep in Osybus’ penalty shootout with already so little to forfeit, that Osybus has started to change parts of Roma’s desires and personality as payment. And Roma is KEENLY aware of the changes and dissonance and the payments happening, but because they feel “natural” to his personality he struggles to disobey. 

Roma’s current dilemma is now--in extremely high stress, high danger situations-- having to choose between dying having never experience The Thing He Wants More Than Anything, or dealing with Osybus to survive to the end but risk being altered so much that the original reasons he made the deals for no longer matter. Real die a hero or live to be the villain type nonsense.

When I use the word raid. I think some people get the idea of operations at the dead of night of surprise and shock. It was like that. But we knew.

There was one road. They blocked it, well "set up checks"

We were nervous. I can't remember who was the unlucky first. He got a breathalyzer check. He got taken. Then a few others. Then this guy. He got breathalyzed. He got taken. Someone has snuck through the woods, heard them tell him he failed and needed to be taken. They were rigging the tests. He had been sober for years.

Fear.

The camp logs got burned. We sat around as the records of our people got burned.

People snuck out. some made it. Some didn't. Either way the fear increased.

The roma went to the corner. I don't blame them. They knew the violence even more intimately.

Tense wold be an understatement. People were tallying up their crimes. What they thought the cops would pin them with. I knew my father had a record

Years later I would find out his record was assault of a police officer age 18. When I put the pieces together I laughed.

I was only a child though

Then the dark came. Normally our salvation. Some people still went to the stage, determined to dance before they were caught.

They would be trapped by the cops, drunk and blind and a herd of stampeding animals. Trapped in canvas and then cuffs

They came. The pigs.

I had a knife pressed into my hand

He told me go keep hold of it. That he loved me. To run into the woods. Hide and seek. But run if they find you. The knife went unspoken.

I watched my father walk towards the sirens and megaphones

I grabbed my grandfathers axe. And the flowerpot I had painted.

I ran. I climbed a tree I had claimed the day before, happy and free. This time tense and scared.

People don't look up.

I held the pot and axe. The knife in my pocket.

Torchlight pierced the trees.

The monsters. The guillotine blade that had hovered over us for years, over me since I was born.

I had always known the monsters were real. I knew about the raids. The violence. I knew the people damaged by the monsters. I now realised I might become one of those people.

At best they wanted to "rescue" me. At worse? I wish I could say I was to young to know of the wandering hands of the law.

Humans are creatures of violence. And a cornered animal is a dangerous thing.

I thought of what would happen to me. I remembered the rabbit. A noose of wire. A dog. Either way, the knife. The blood. The fur was soft, once cleaned of the blood. I was good with a knife, but a child. The food was good. Flesh and blood. It was few, but it filled my small stomach.

That was my crime. The death of rabbits. And some snails, crushed as they lay, the leaves they had eaten beside them.

Kills to survive.

I wondered if it was karma, I imagined the big boot of the law coming to crush me.

Would my mother get on her horse to challenge the lord for my life?

Would the drag up old laws, old crimes, to trap me. Jealous that their children can never be free?

I survived. But I added more blood to my hands. A crime. Not to my record- just like the monsters did not have a crime on their record. The title of "police" said enough.

I don't get upset when cornered, I get angry, I am my father's son, I have his father's axe, and the knife is mine now. The sin mine too. I am a beast. And even a cub can bite.

Sometimes I remember it. The smoke, the violence, and cry. It then solidifies, I to anger, and I will hold my head high, steel in my eyes, a challenge, I am the child of the wild, challenge me, see my wrath, you may try to blunt my teeth but let me show you how much you failed.

Chapter 1

O n e 

J a n u a r y 1 9 2 7

Before we begin, I want to say that there are freaking 47 chapters and an epilogue, and 421 pages total (including the contents and backmatter, etc). I would normally triple up on chapters, but it hasn’t left my mind how much of a slog that the first book was. The reviews warn that Gong “has not learned her lesson” and that the book was in dire need of an editor to help her trim this down into something readable. (One reviewer challenged those who left 5 star reviews to “name one plot point that happened before the last 100 pages”. I think that that says a lot about what we can expect from this.)

So yeah. 100% not looking forward to this. But hey! At least this is only a duology, and not anything longer. 

“What you’re about to watch came directly from its premiere in Manhattan. Quality entertainment.” 

The picture started. Screen One was the largest viewing room in the whole Grand Theatre, its orchestral sound booming from all sides. Each seat was equipped with its own translation system, reading out the text that appeared alongside the silent film. The couple to Juliette’s left were wearing their earpieces, murmuring excitedly to each other as the lines filtered through in Chinese. 

Maybe things are different in China, but… 

IT’S LITERALLY A SILENT FILM. HOW HARD COULD IT HAVE BEEN TO CHANGE THE DIALOGUE CARDS?!

“Why do you pause?” Juliette mimicked bitterly. Softly, she set him down, brushing his mussed hair out of his face. “Because even if you hate me, Roma Montagov, I still love you.”

Chapter 1 summary: Despite the fact that the first book closed on Paul’s death and him saying that it would bring about an even bigger plague… 

We’re now three months past that, and the only deaths are because the Scarlets and White Flowers need to be forced into the “this is our get along shirt”. 

Anyway, Juliette and Kathleen go to the theatre, where they’re annoyed that Roma has also shown up. They see him talking with a merchant, which is annoying because Juliette’s family also wants to make a deal with this British merchant who brought technology from the UK. 

The movie starts, but Juliette sees a figure standing with a gun. She shoots him, but nobody in the audience notices because the orchestra is enacting a wild west gunfight on screen. But Roma notices, and he starts shooting at Juliette, and that’s what people notice. They start fleeing, but there are only two doors, so it creates a bottleneck situation. 

Anyway, Roma is angry that Juliette “killed” Marshall. She points out that she loves him anyway, which is the stupidest fucking thing that I’ve ever seen in at least a month. 

Also, exactly as I had predicted from my experience with the first book and the reviews warning about this, but this book drowned in purple prose. I probably skimmed half of this chapter, and somehow missed completely and utterly nothing. You know, BECAUSE NOTHING IS HAPPENING. 

Chapter 2

There were twenty-two vases scattered around the Cai mansion, all of them filled with red roses.

Do you see what I’m dealing with here? Now picture the ENTIRE FUCKING SERIES BEING LIKE THIS.

“That was Shu Yang. General Shu. Do you know who he is? Have you been following the papers and the advancement of the Northern Expedition at all?” 

Juliette winced. “Bàba,” she started. She dropped into a seat opposite her father’s desk. Kathleen silently followed suit. “The Northern Expedition is so terribly boring—” 

“It will determine the fate of our country—” 

“Okay, fine, fine—the reports are so boring. General so-and-so took this segment of land. Army division so-and-so moved this far up. I practically cry in excitement when you send me to strangle someone instead.” Juliette clasped her hands together. “Please, just let me do the strangling.”

Here’s some food for thought for everybody (especially the author): If the politics of this series are such a huge plot point, but the main character doesn’t give a fucking shit about any of it… WHY THE HELL SHOULD THE READERS CARE ABOUT THIS?!

He was still her brother. He wasn’t gone entirely.

Chapter 2 summary: Roma slinks home with his proverbial tail between his legs. There, he’s approached by the replacement goldfish for Marshall, Demetri. He tells Roma that if he had an encounter with Juliette, he should consider himself to be lucky. 

Meanwhile, Juliette mopes around her house, and complains about the constant stream of politicians her dad meets with. Her dad chides her that these are important people, but as mentioned, Juliette couldn't care less about any of them, or politics. 

Anyway, she and Kathleen tell Juliette’s father about striking the deal with the merchant, then about the would-be assassin, and Roma at the theater. 

Then finally, FINALLY, 27 pages and 2 chapters into this, we get a random flashback to where we left off at the end of the first book. Right after it was revealed that Paul had other contacts who were going to release the plague upon news of Paul’s death. Except that literally nothing of importance happened. Now, the Cai family is being blackmailed by the plague-owner, and they feel like they have no choice but to cough up the money. 

And then because the author has no idea how to write a decent story, we switch over to Alisa, who confirms for us that her family is also being blackmailed by the plague-owner, too. I don’t give a shit. The leader doesn’t think that it’s real, and thinks that it’s largely a joke. Apparently, Roma never bothered to tell them about the secondary plague being held off by said blackmailer. I guess cause we need an actual plot…

Then there’s this really dumb scene that goes on for too long where Alisa walks up to Ben, her cousin, but he’s angry over Marshall’s “death”, and takes his anger out on her. It serves no purpose that hasn’t already been established except to waste nearly three pages.

to... offer a perspective without seeming like im trying to speak over anyone. like. as a mixed roma (like tommy is), what tommy is having to go through in this issue is... trauma as well.... saying "its not about him" when he just found his /mother's corpse/ is a little weird to me. a roma having to witness his families murder/the aftermath is still racialized trauma and shouldnt be brushed under the rug

(same mixed roma anon as before) i'm not saying that it needs to take priority over talking about the david situation or the actual murder itself, but i think dismissing people talking about tommy isn't really a fair take. i hope i'm not coming off as confrontational, i just wanted to offer my opinion.

hey so i wasn't trying to dismiss tommy's trauma or his feelings when it came to finding wanda's body, obviously that's fucked up and he's going to feel the ramifications of that for a long time. my insistent on not talking about tommy right now is because there's just a lot of people who are weird about tommy and i just think it's more important, esp on my blog, to talk about david and wanda first. it's not to say that tommy isn't important or his trauma isn't either but idk it's just weird to me to prioritize tommy right now. like if more people are talking about tommy's reaction rather than wanda's actual death, it starts to get weird. or if people make what happened to david how tommy would feel about it, etc. like im not saying thats what u are doing but there is a weird branch of tommy stans out there and thats who i was addressing

that dreamers often lie by pretentiousashell. rated G. idek how to describe this fic all i remember are the emotions i had while reading it, which were a lot i’ll have u know. basically it’s an everybody lives au where everyone is still in the mafia, but narancia gets to go to school!!(that’s not a huge plot point tho) i love the way mista is written in this fic it’s so endearing and their relationship.... hoo wee 🥺 just so sweet and fun!

AAAAGGGHH THIS FIC!!! ok ok ok so essentially it’s kind of a pre-part 5? i guess? mista encounters narancia being beat up and saves him, and they become quick friends, but narancia decides to cut ties like almost immediately :( they meet again when narancia joins the gang but nara pretends he doesn’t know who mista is and. well you’ll jus have to see what happens next 😈😳

Buff Orange- would you consider yourself athletic?

probably more than average- I play basketball for my university (second team I'm not that good) and I've been working out a fair bit this summer. but I'm small, so I'm not as strong as I may look

Burnt sienna- favourite smell?

I like cinnamon and coconut quite a lot. And citrus-y stuff

Copper- what's your favourite kind of day?

One where I have stuff to do that I want to do. get up around 8 or 9am, get on with whatever I'm doing, workout or play sports at some point, spend some time relaxing too, and spend some time with my close friends ideally. I need to be busy and have stuff to do to enjoy myself, but I don't love days where I have an endless list of stuff to do.

Orangeade- when do you feel alive?

When I'm playing basketball, when I workout, when I'm with my closest friends, when I'm doing the parts of physics and maths that I love. Watching sports. Spending time with animals. Basically when I'm involved with any of the things I love in life.

If we're going less deep, I went on a water slide recently where you go down in a two person raft and it's a like a big steep skate ramp. And that was pretty fucking fun

Vermillion- how brave are you?

Depends on the stakes. I have a very strong fear of death and also heights, but very little fear of injury or pain so there's that. I've had to be brave in a more personal way when I was coming out, and after all of that I'm very good at not giving a shit what other ppl think, but I get very nervous and intimidated when I'm attracted to someone.

Bittersweet Shimmer- what's your favourite memory?

So technically it's probably making the finals of the U17 RDT, but I kept this one in because I want to show my appreciation for @roma-ntics -when they were (I think) tipsy, they found a Tumblr post with a punchline along the lines of "my gender is punk", and very excitedly was like "it's you! This post is you" and it was honestly a very validating and wholesome experience and made me really, really happy
