Interview: Rosemary Loup
Dossier:
Name: Rosemary “Rosie” Loup
Age: 23
Species: Werewolf
Circle: Night
Known Relationships: Member of the Talbot Pack
Interview:
What's your name?
“Oh.” Rosemary swallows and looks around a moment, her hands twitching as she fidgets. “Rosemary Loup, but uh, my friends all call me Rosie. Or they used to, I guess.”
How do you know Tabitha Spencer?
“Tabitha? I mean we’re both turned wolves, not bitten. That sort of makes you stick out around here in the wolf packs. We were from different ones but she was always nice to me. One of the few people that night who seemed to care that I was there.”
How do you know Jose Alves Cruz?
For this, she can’t look up, taking a deep breath. What is there to say. “Jose is...I don’t know. He’s fine. He’s the mayor. And he bossed me around that night like I was some kind of servant. He asked me to grab him something from under the bar and bring it to him so I did. It was in this kind of tin box I guess. My hands itched for a minute, while I was carrying it, like I thought maybe it was silver, but I gave it to him anyway. But it wasn’t, right? It wasn’t because it shot Hollis so it had to be iron.”
How do you know Hollis Fiala?
“I don’t!” Rosemary answers quickly. “I don’t. I don’t know them. I just know they’re running for Orator but we’re not supposed to vote for them because that’s what your parents said. Because they won’t help us out or whatever. I don’t know them. I wouldn’t shoot them.”
Did you see the shot happened/What happened that night from your perspective?
She swallows, unable to meet Connor’s eyes. Her voice gets quiet. “I was on the floor when it happened, when there was that shot. I heard the chamber click first, but it only clicked one time. I heard the gunshot before I heard the click. There should have been two. And then everything was chaos and I was so scared. I saw your parents try to run for me, make sure I wouldn’t shift, but I did anyway and it just...I made such a mess, just like I always do. And now they have to figure out how to pay for it without getting Thaddeus blacklisted from the Strat all because I couldn’t keep it together.”
When did you get the invitation for the party/know you were going to work it?
“We’re one of the only catering companies that exclusively does Underground parties so we get a lot of traffic. Not even Aware are allowed to work for us to avoid anything scary happening. Your grandma set me up with the job after I had to drop out of school. They pay enough and they’re really nice people. God, and it’s all my fault, isn’t it? They’re probably going to fire me after I shifted like that. I’ve kept my head down and just followed the rules for so long.”
Did you go with someone?
“Just everyone in the catering company.” Rosie pushes her hair back from her face and the tears start to prickle at the corners of her eyes. “They’re good people. They are. I’m good people.”
Do you own a gun/have you ever owned a gun?
She shakes her head. “No. No I never owned a gun, not ever. I don’t even touch them. My ex-boyfriend, he used to have them, but I never liked it so I kept away even when they were at our apartment. We broke up when he turned me and that was three years ago, so I haven’t been around one since.
Rosemary reaches for Connor’s arm, pulling on his sleeve gently. “Can I talk to you about something? Off the record.”

Do you have scents picked out for Lyra/A station/any other companions? I feel like it would be fun to think about
OHHH you just blended my two beloved topics into one..... this is a fun one!! these ended up mostly being indie scent picks bc that's where i've found the most interesting, out-of-the-box note combinations.
lyra: since she's very much into herbalism and also a druid, my in-canon scent description of her would be that she smells of weavemoss, musk creeper petals, and a faint scent of animal fur. irl, this would translate into oakmoss, dead leaves, lavender, tonka, and musk. something like sleepy by lush, bacchante by alkemia, or loup garou by hexennacht.
astarion: he makes it easy because he describes his own perfume blend as 'bergamot, rosemary, and brandy'. people have made perfumes following this already, but on a less literal sense, i think he'd also wear caveau des innocents by alkemia, wilde by bpal, or vicomte de balmont by bpal. the former is a perfect den of debauchery in perfume form, and the other two are attractive dandyish colognes.
shadowheart: 100% deadly nightshade by alkemia. this is what a night orchid smells like to me - violets and leather. selûnite shadowheart would also wear amyris femme, i think. it has a citric, clean vibe, and iirc there's in-game text mentioning 'lime soap' for her. and dark justiciar shadowheart would be a dior hypnotic poison kinda girl imo.
lae'zel: nevertheless, she persisted by bpal has a funky metallic edge to it that's an acquired taste, much like our favourite githyanki. somehow i also think she'd suit bastet by bpal (myrrh, cardamom, almond, lotus) - it shows her softer side. bpal fighter might be on the nose, but it's another perfect choice.
karlach: if you wanna go literal - smokestack by bpal will have that industrial, smoky edge to it. however i'm not a fan of it, and i like karlach too much to give her a scent i dislike. she could also rock by the fireplace by maison margiela; it's smoky, but comforting, like her whole vibe.
wyll: incantation vanille by alkemia! it takes simple vanilla and dips it into layers of intense smokiness and it emerges transformed, much like the blade of frontiers. incantation by bpal would also work (peppery, slightly smoky cologne).
gale: whispers in the library by maison margiela is a no-brainer; it smells like books. i think impossibility, like wine by alkemia would also work for him. anathema by bpal (opium, vetiver, honeysuckle) makes me think of the netherese orb so i'm adding it to the list.
halsin: robin goodfellow by bpal (mossy woods, musk & herbs) or miel de sauvage et tabac by alkemia. actually the latter is just perfect for him since he does smoke pipe tobacco + the linden honey note suits his sweet tooth for honeycomb.
jaheira: elf by bpal... it smells like a sunlit pine forest + berries! or eden, also by bpal, which is fig (fruit and leaf), honeyed almond milk, toasted coconut and sandalwood. she'd be a sandalwood girlie, i know it.
minsc: another cop-out but it's gotta be bpal's ranger... pine + buckskin + patchouli, it just works for him
no minthara as of yet bc i didn't really interact much with her in this playthrough! :') maybe next one i'll revise this

Plot Drop 003: The Trial of Tabitha Spencer Part 1
Tumblr media
THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER...
Two shots rang out on the night as the sun finished it’s rotation around the sun. To say 2023 started off with a bang to anyone outside the Midnight Underground would earn a laugh, but for the people within it they knew just how true of a statement it was. Hollis Fiala, one of their candidates, had been shot at Thaddeus James’ new year celebration event. Word spreads like wildfire and by the time the Unaware police have finished scoping the scene and been properly frightened or bribed away by those with money to burn, rumors have already been in wide speculation.
A young wolf named Tabitha Spencer, the sister to Damian Harker’s nephew, has been detained for suspicion of attempted murder. The only people near the gun were her and Mayor Jose Alves Cruz. It comes out quickly that Jose was injured in the attack, a thrall to Hollis themself, and the tide turns just as soon. Before there has even been a trial many of those in the Underground have decided her guilty. What other sense would there be in it?
Our inhabitants, as those trained to be ever vigilant and paranoid are swift to do, construct elaborate theories about the crime and its motivations. Perhaps Karlha had orchestrated the entire event in hopes of making competition less steep. Or maybe Damian had promised his pseudo-niece something for the same. Sympathy turns to the injured heir with their iron bullet wound and you can hear whispers and praise of the elegance with which they handled the night. Even those outside the wild circle are want to give them credit lest they seem suspicious in a conspiracy themselves.
The people do not know of what you know, my dears, for they are never the wiser of The Oracle’s visions of a doomed world consumed by darkness after Karlha’s death. To them it is an isolated incident. At least, for now.
You are charged with determining, and perhaps proving, Tabitha’s innocence during the night. The charges for these crimes are heavy and it would likely be off with her head.
THE FATES ARE CRUEL AND KIND...
When asked to roll for something, the DM:
They rolled....a 19 (critical success): The people of the Midnight Underground take Hollis’ side and believe Tabitha is the shooter.
When asked to roll for choice:
Kellan, Connor, Nora, and Esme rolled highest: They were chosen as the emissaries for their respective circles.
IMPLICATIONS FOR THE GAME...
We have our Emissaries who are to be conducting interviews and collecting evidence to the best of their abilities. Should you be conducting interviews with NPCs, we will be posting the information for you on the NPC blog in interview format for you to look. Should you be conducting interviews with a PC, please decide with that person how you’re going to conduct the interview so we can compile what was said by them somewhere for eyes to look upon. For physical evidence, such as the gun, we will be opening up a channel in the discord for our four emissaries to interact with it. Below is an indication of who each Emissary will have to interview. Those bolded are NPCs.
Connor: Connor Talbot I, Catherine Talbot, Rina Mochizuki, Rosemary Loup, Matthew Coleman-Reyes, Karlha Whitlock, Tabitha Spencer, and Lilith Gaumond
Kellan: Dr. Henry Jones, Cameron Kiskadden, Elias Hart, Jose Alvez Cruz, and Damian Harker
Esmeray: Hollis Fiala and Carmen Blakely
Nora: Chloe Li, Yasaminia Ahmadi, Thaddeus James, and Sebastian Harker
Good luck my darling dears. Try not to look too closely or you’ll spin yourselves into a tizzy.
Sincerely,
Tumblr media

*slides in* hello! if you’re still doing drabbles... can i request some sabriel? i’d love to see something along the lines of gabe as a restaurant critic with sam as his cute chef boyfriend? whatever you could come up with in that area would be amazing!
You can request anything from me, Dear, and you know it. It was fun to write, and I apologize for making Gabriel a Drama Queen, but you know I love torturing our boys.
DRABBLE #4
Pairing: Sam Winchester/Gabriel (Sabriel, SPN)
Genre: Fluff, Domestic, RestaurantCritic!Gabriel, Chef!Sam
Warnings: Um.. dramatic Gabriel?
Thedoor to Sam’s kitchend flew open with a dramatic bang.
„Samshine…!“Gabriel whined.
Samgrinned and serenely kept stirring milk into his pot, turning a clumpof butter, herbs and flour into creamy sauce Bechamel.
„Hello,Gabriel. Did you have a nice day?“
„Samshine, they tried to poison me! AGAIN! Ugh.“
Samrolled his eyes at the bubbling contents of his pot and sighed. Gabepulled out a chair and draped himself over it, all dramatic andattention seeking.
„Wheredid they try to poison you this time, honey?“ Sam asked, still notlooking up from his task of lovingly spooning the white sauce over abig pan of Lasagna.
„ThatFrench restaurant downtown, Le Frommage or something. I can’t evenremember, the food was so bad.“
Samsighed. „You mean ‘Les Formidables’. I heard its supposed to bequite good though. What did you order?“
Gabrielrubbed his palm over his face to emphasize his distress.
„Ihad a mixed cheese platter as entrée. It was terrible. The portionstoo big, lethal disgusting wooden toothpicks all over the cheese andI nearly speared my gums with them. Also, I think I might have asplinter in my thumb now. Atrocious. The only edible thing about thecheese platter was the side bread. And i LIKE cheese, you know that.“
Samnodded and hummed while carefully grating the perfect amount ofexpensive parmesan cheese over the top of his Lasagna.
„NextI ordered Loup de Mer with potato gratin. I found a fishbone. AFISHBONE, SAM! In MY FISH! Can you imagine. I almost ate it.“ hemade a hacking noise at the memory and actually managed to makehimself look a bit green. Fascinating.
„Wasthe gratin any good at least?“ Sam asked while pinching a few freshbasil leaves off of the plant he lovingly kept and groomed on hiswindowsill. He rubbed the leaves to bring out the aroma and thenshredded them and sprinkled them over the top of the Lasagna.
„No!Of course not! Pay attention, Sam. It was too salty and it had awhole rosemary tree inside. I swear I bit on a piece of tree bark.“
Samrolled his eyes, again, and put on his mittens to put the dish intothe pre heated oven.
„Rosemarydoes not grow on trees, Gabe. They’re bushes. You know that.“ Sampointed at the nice, silvery green plant sitting next to the basil atthe herb window.
Theblonde man whined „But I swear it was gross!“
Samnodded. „Sure. What did you have as main course?“
„Roastedrack of lamb with, what they called a 'fresh thyme crust’. Soundsdelicious, right? WRONG! The crust wasnt crusty, it was soggy and themeat was still raw inside and there was still bones in the rack. Ididn’t like that, Sam.“
„Iknow you dont, love. But isn’t lamb supposed to be medium? It wouldbe tough if it was well done.“
„Saaaaaaaaaaaam!“,he whined, „you’re not supposed to argue against me! Am i therestaurant critic or are you?“
Sammumbled „No, by all means, I only have one michelin star, no bigdeal, go on, i bet you know better…“
Gabrielkept complaining about the terrible food for the whole 40 minutes ittook for the Lasagna to come out of the oven, its crust beautifullygolden and the smell of cheesy, meaty goodness was  mouth watering.Sam served two big plates full of it with a side of simple greensalad with vinegar dressing and a nice red wine.
Gabrielate until he couldn’t eat anymore. He sighed happily and moaned witheach bite, not dreaming of complaining even once. They had emptiedthe whole bottle of red by the time they were finally finished, andwhen Sam took his plate to put it in the dish washer Gabriel grabbedhis wrist and pulled him down for a quick kiss.
„Youknow, the food at the restaurant was maybe not as bad as I told you.I might have exaggerated a bit.“
Samfinally allowed himself to grin. „You think?“
„Hm.Maybe. Maybe you just spoiled me forever with your fucking perfectcooking. Man, I could happily live off of your homemade Lasagna forall eternity, you know.“
Samchuckled. „I know, Baby. You tell me every time I make it. So, areyou going to write a horrible review for 'Les Formidables’?“
Gabrielsighed. „I guess not.“
Samchuckled again as Gabe booted up his laptop to start writing. He knewall he had to do was feed his little Drama Queen to turn a shittycritique into a perfect one.  After all, 'Les Formidables’ was Joeand Ellens brand new restaurant, and he could not ever look them inthe eyes again if Gabriel didn’t give them five stars.

Dungeons, Dragons, & Dives: Goblin Thanksgiving
Tumblr media
We talk about these recipes in DD 22: Happy Goblin Thanksgiving!
Hot Horse Meat
Hot Horse Meat is a Top Sirloin steak, scored poorly across both sides to represent the poor butcher work of the goblins. I chose Top Sirloin steak as it is a good cut of beef, but on the leaner side, as real horse meat would be. Not quite as tough or lean, but very delicous!
Preheat your skillet on medium-high heat, rub your steak down with coarse salt and black pepper, and sear on both sides for about 1 1/2 minutes each. Enjoy the rare bloody goodness!
Roasted Bloodberries
In a bowl, mix 2 cups of fresh cranberries, a tablespoon of maple syrup, a tablespoon of water, and salt and rosemary to taste. Spread on a baking sheet covered in foil, preferably sprayed with a non-stick spray. Roast in the oven at 425 for about 30 minutes, or until the cranberries have softened and cooked through.
Baked Dirt-Rocks
Simply a delicious baked potato. Wash your big Russet potatoes, poke multiple little holes all over with a fork, lightly coat in olive oil, and roll around in coarse salt. Bake for an hour on 450, cut open, and add a bit of butter and black pepper. Enjoy!
Treebooze
Follow the instructions on Le Loup Garou Alchemy’s site to make your own absinthe, or just buy some. Enjoy!

How to dye your hair the natural way!
Henna is an ancient and holy material that has touched almost every culture but saw particularly heavy use in Asia and Africa. It is a natural dye made from the Lawsonia Inermis plant that stains clothing, hair, and skin a rich, orange-brown.
If you want shiny, strong, naturally colorful and healthy hair- henna is your best option!
Recipe, tips, tricks, pics, and FAQ below the cut!
You can get a range of colors and shades from the dye depending on your natural hair color and texture and the blending of indigo (for darker shades) or cassia (for lighter shades). Always sift your henna before use and try to purchase in bulk from reputable and local sources. Not sifting your henna can mean you might find little twigs and rocks in your shower… so it’s worth doing.
To obtain a natural brunette color, use an equal mixture of indigo and henna. Pure indigo gives you a nice blue-black color and pure henna is firey orange. Pull some hair out of your hairbrush and do some test samples of mixes to get the perfect color for you! Cassia powder does not dye the hair but will give you some amazing benefits.
Tumblr media
DO THE THING
Alright! Now for the fun part… ready for my top secret specialty never-fail Henna Brew recipe?
Wing it. Yeah, that’s right- just stare into your spice cabinet and have fun… as long as you have…
-Something acidic. This can be tea, lemon juice, wine, or beer- just make sure it’s strong and it makes up the majority of your liquid. This is what gets the dye to release.
-Henna (and/or indigo and/or cassia) powder
And that’s it for the requirements! Now, here’s a list of my favorite additions
-Brew your tea with dried rosemary- it’s so good for your hair!
-Tea tree oil helps break up clumps in the mixture and acts as a preservative
-Clove oil smells great but please only use 2-3 drops, it’s strong!
-Hibiscus can give you a boost of red but it only lasts for about a week.
-I like to boil my tea with an anise star because I’m a STAR. It’s witchcraft.
-You could put honey or sugar in it to make it gloopier… might stay on your hair better
-Lavender in the tea!
-The bones of your enemies make perfect stir sticks
-Olive oil, coconut oil, or shea butter can all be added into the mix to soften your hair but it will definitely not give you quite as much dye release. If you just want a tint then go for it! Lush’s henna bars contain a lot of shea butter and therefore don’t give you an intense color but they do make your hair feel amazing. Personally, I’m cheap so I just make it from scratch.
Now, slowly add in your liquids and mix until it’s the consistency of yogurt. Once it’s nice and gloopy (there’s that damn word again), cover it tightly (plastic wrap will do but if you can get your hands on it use bees wrap!), set it in front of a window and let it stew for 12 hours while the dye releases. This is the hardest part… remembering to make your dye the night before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dye day!
Okay, get some gloves on to protect your precious fingers from Orangeness and dig in! You might want to save a little Brew to add in at this point- you want it fairly liquidy so you can easily spread it through your hair. Start at the roots and work your way out, covering your whole head with henna! Once you look like a swamp monster, wrap some plastic wrap and a towel around your head and binge watch The Handmaids Tale on Hulu for 2-4 hours (If you’re really into the show you can leave it in your hair for up to 8 hours before you GET SOME SUNLIGHT). The longer you leave it, the darker brown it will get. Sweet spot for me is usually 3 hours. Wash it all out with water and conditioner only DON’T SHAMPOO. Listen, I know you like to be clean, I do too, but please don’t shampoo this time. Just enjoy your hair being silky soft and healthy. You can shampoo tomorrow.
The color will be quite a few shades brighter for the first 3-4 days and then it will settle into the color it will be FOREVER. Yes, folks that’s right. Henna doesn’t fade. Not even a bit. The sun might lighten it like it will anything but under normal conditions your hair will never ever change color again until it grows out. Bless.
FAQ
Why does henna make hair healthier?
Unlike commercial chemical dyes, henna binds to each strand of hair and strengthens it naturally. You may even notice the difference in individual strand thickness! Henna (as well a indigo and cassia) can eliminate split ends, enhance shine, and add volume.
Can I use any henna?
Use the best quality, finest henna you can get your hands on. Never buy pre-mixed henna as it can contain dangerous terps and is often meant for body art only. Henna will naturally range from bright green to beigish-green and smells like freshly cut grass. The greener and more fragrant the henna, the fresher it will be!
Can you be allergic to henna?
Most people aren’t, but always do a patch test and make sure you don’t have a reaction. The biggest cause for concern is what you put into the henna to release the dyes. Be careful when using essential oils- they’re stronger than you’d think! and be smart with your other ingredients. There is no shortage of henna brew recipes on the internet to choose from! Some even involve hard candies, wine, and cayenne pepper! And… do me a favor. If you plan to use your henna to dye your Special Hairs… do not put cayenne pepper in it. Learn from my horrible, horrible mistakes.
Can you use chemical dyes over/under henna?
Ehhhhh I’m going to give this one a big fat “At your own risk”. I’ve personally done it a few times with no adverse effects but oh the horror stories I’ve read. Spot Test! Also, dyes do not work very well over henna because most of your hair strand is already full of henna so often the dye won’t even take.
Will henna stain my skin/tub?
Yes. Yes it will. If you’re really concerned lube up your skin around your hairline with hair conditioner and wash out your tub immediately (or just jump in the ocean to get the henna out- that always works!)
Will henna stain my-
YES
Stainless steel?
Wait no, you’re safe there. That’s the only thing it won’t stain.
How do you know all this? SOURCES??
I’ve been a henna-head since freshman year of highschool which was... oh god it was 8 years ago. I’ve dyed my hair every 2 months since then with this green gloop. You learn things.
Alright, now go forth and be beautiful, Goddesses!
Love and light, Laura Loup <3

It’s unofficially summer!
It’s sunny and warm, everything is green, and... the bugs have come out. Spider mites, mealy bugs, fungus gnats, aphids, and other unwelcome pests are making their way indoors, which means you’re probably searching for solutions and pulling your hair out over products and remedies that do nothing at all.
In a tiny apartment in the middle of the city, my SO and I live with 150+ plants, all indoors, with no outside to speak of, and (mostly) no unwanted critters. Tips like “put the plant outside and hose it down” or “just get this super cheap thing in bulk from the local mom n’ pop farm supply shop and take it home in your car” don’t work here. Also, approaches to garden maintenance are a little different when you have 1-10 plants vs. dozens!
Thus, in this post I’ll be focusing on plant pest control solutions for those of us with a lot of house plants, no yards, no cars, and no patience left for pests.
Note: links to products are included for convenience only; I have no partnerships with nor receive compensation from these sellers.
Note 2: all pest treatments take time (weeks) and multiple applications to work, often in combination with other methods.
PART 1: ANTI-PEST PRODUCTS THAT ACTUALLY WORK
Repti Bark (can also be found at most pet stores) Use for: gnats Use a 2cm+ layer as soil cover/mulch to retain moisture a little longer without attracting gnats. Pebbles work well for plants that like even damper soil, like ferns, but are they’re heavier and more expensive.
Yellow Sticky Traps Use for: gnats, flying pests In *combination with other gnat control products, these work wonders. (*Key word being combination -- if you see poor reviews on any given product, it’s probably because the person is only using that single thing and only hitting one life stage of the pest while others, like eggs or larvae, are left untreated.)
Pyrethrin Concentrate Use for: gnats, aphids, mealy bugs, mites This is a chemical naturally present in chrysanthemums and is relatively safe for indoor use. Read more about it here. For soil pests: mix recommended amount with water and spray directly on soil/mulch before watering, or just add some to your watering can. This will disperse it throughout the soil, targeting larvae. The plant will also take up some of these chemicals through the roots, potentially protecting it from leaf pests as well. For leaf pests: mix recommended amount and spray. As with fertilizers, LESS IS MORE! Don’t use too much; you’ll burn your plants.
AzaMax (Azadirachtin) Use for: spider mites, aphids, mealy bugs, gnats Azadirachtin is the main active ingredient in neem seeds and neem oil. It’s also safe for mammals and birds -- ok to use indoors even if you have pets or children. Read more: Wikipedia: Azadirachtin Wikipedia: Neem Oil NPIC: Neem Oil Fact Sheet GPN Article: Neem and Azadirachtin Why not just use neem oil? Well, I do (I like DynaGro’s neem oil) but I’ve found that extracted Azadirachtin works especially well for spider mites (when used as directed, in multiple applications over a couple of weeks). And maybe it’s a placebo effect, but, with all the various offerings of neem oil out there and little to no labeled info on constituents or active ingredient percentages, it gives me peace of mind to know I have the active, effective extract when using AzaMax. On the other hand, neem oil contains other active ingredients, some insecticidal, which may work synergistically and so may be more effective together than they are separately. Can be used with a spray bottle (one that won’t get clogged by oils, like these, or better yet, this pressure sprayer) or applied directly when watering, just like the pyrethrin above.
Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap - Baby Unscented Use for: any leaf pests like spider mites or aphids This is my favorite hand/body soap, but I’ve recently found it works wonders for plants as well! It’s now my first line of defense against mites and other leaf pests: just wash them off without burning the foliage. (I don’t recommend the following method for your vining Philodendrons and ivies with tons of leaves, unless you’ve got a lot of time and patience). To use: simply get your plant wet in the sink or shower, allowing the water alone to wash off some of the pests. Pour some soap in your hands and get to work lathering up each leaf: back, front, and down the petiole and stem if you can. Then rinse. Between washings, you can follow up with pyrethrin, neem, or AzaMax sprays.
PART 2: STILL TESTING / LESS EFFECTIVE BUT GOOD FOR COMBOS
SM-90 Mostly citrus oil. Smells good. Some people swear by this stuff, especially in combination with AzaMax. I have it and like to use it with AzaMax or Pyrethrin, although I’m not sure of its efficacy alone.
Rosemary Oil A friend introduced me to this for spider mite control. It does contain some insecticidal chemicals and seems to work well in diluted spray applications. Read more: Chemical composition: The main chemical components of rosemary oil are a-pinene, borneol, b-pinene, camphor, bornyl acetate, camphene, 1,8-cineole and limonene. Contains 10-20% camphor, which is sometimes used as an insect repellent. Study: Efficacy and Persistence of Rosemary Oil as an Acaricide Against Twospotted Spider Mite -- “Laboratory bioassay results indicated that pure rosemary oil and EcoTrol (a rosemary oil-based pesticide) caused complete mortality of spider mites at concentrations that are not phytotoxic to the host plant.”
PART 3: DON’T EVEN BOTHER
Various insecticidal soap sprays: (commonly found in garden centers at hardware stores) Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap Miracle-Gro Nature's Care 3-in-1 Insect, Disease and Mite Control Garden Safe 80422 Houseplant and Garden Insect Killer, 24-Ounce Spray Etc. The active ingredients are of questionable efficacy, or extremely low in concentration. I’ve tried these, but results weren’t astounding, and since the list of stuff above yields observable results, I don’t waste time with these.
Diatomaceous Earth It’s messy as hell and I’m not impressed with the (lack of) results. Fine powder that can be harmful if accidentally inhaled.
Mosquito Bits (and Dunks) Commonly recommended for gnats. Also messy; results aren’t obvious.
Hydrogen Peroxide Often recommended for fungus gnats and root rot. But unless you miraculously achieve the perfect dilution of this stuff with water (there’s much contention about proper amounts), it either does nothing at all at best or burns your plants at worst. I do like it for cleaning my humidifier, though!
Gnatrol The effects weren’t noticeable and I don’t use it anymore. Again, mostly because the list of stuff above is enough for my arsenal. Also, as you can see by this bottom list, I just don’t like powders and stuff that easily spills everywhere or is easily inhaled.
Potatoes, “letting the soil dry”, ladybugs, etc.: There are so many remedies out there, it’s a headache sifting through them. They can cost you a lot of money and plant lives before you figure out what works (I know from experience). Others may have found that some of these things work for them, and that’s fine, but they’re not on my list of favorites for lack of consistent, clear, and relatively quick results. Also, (and this goes beyond plants) don’t be fooled by the words “natural” and “chemical”. Not all natural ingredients are safe, and not all chemicals (synthetic or naturally derived) are bad. But don’t take random bloggers’ word for it (including me) -- do your research. Look for studies (Google Scholar is great for this) and reputable, primary sources. Check the chemical composition of oils and other mixtures and find out whether any of those constituents are A. insectidices and B. safe for other animals. Be smart and be safe.
