Hi! Are you in the Blackice fandom too? Sorry, I know I’m probably being so random to a bunch of you in the fandom, but I just joined and I’m obsessed! This seems like a rather small fandom at this point, not too many people are in it, are they? Anyways, happy to know at least some people are in the fandom!

Any tips you could give me about black ice art/fics/blogs/content/etc would be greatly appreciated!

The fandom is quite small, but I think that makes for a better experience honestly. :) More cozy, more personal, easier to get to know and support each other! IN FACT. I know @miss-evening has a huge archive of blackice arts/writings/headcanons on their blog. We found a lot of content from the fandom in its hay day there. :) 

@department-of-fagriculture‘s and @livori ‘s art of the past are some of my personal favorites if you scroll through the blackice tag. Also @madam--mark actively makes lovely blackice art in such an expressive style! And @froggyfeetsies has some really sweet and hilarious blackice! For fics, both of us tend to like the more fluffy/fun variety with Pitch and Jack being a badass power couple (who are also disasters) getting into all kinds of shenanigans. 😂To rec just a few: 

PLS check out Five Veils and a Heartbeat by BurrrdBrainedInsomnia. Royal AU that has a bit of a dark premise but totally flips some common tropes around. It’s so refreshing and the dynamic between the boys is just fun and cozy and I JUST WANT THEM TO KISS ALREADY. 🤣 Also check out their other fics. They write blackice in all kinds of flavors. :) AND THEY DO ART SOMETIMES! THE WHOLE PACKAGE RIGHT HERE! @stuffdone 👈

A Dragon and His Prince by Frostre. PITCH IS A DRAGON. AND HE’S ACE. AND IT’S A WILD RIDE. Top ten easily. ;D 

To Dream of Respite by shipwreck. Modern AU with ace!Jack and it’s SO good. Just. Totally compelling, emotional story. Highly recommend. 

The Device has Been Modified by Lindzzz. Their evil boyfriend series was great but this AU is so cute! Jack is an AI accidentally made by Pitch! Chaos ensues! 

Also PLS check out fics by penning the stars! They have so many cute blackice one shots!

Have decided to compile my favorites in one place! I’ll use Ao3 links whenever possible (bc I think the layout is cleaner) but I’ll also link some from ff.net

Learning to See by emeralddawn- this one is sooo good. The long and short of it is Jamie and Sophie’s mom believing in the Guardians. So much good family energy in this one.

There’s Something Special about that Boy... by jeleania- This one is of Jack as a young kid with his mom and sister. It’s got fae elements which I adore, and Jack being the Bestest Brother Ever.

Running For Life by sapphire316- the It fic for me, it was posted earlier on ff.net and is part of the reason I originally stuck around the fandom. It’s a fantasy au that mirrors the plot of the movie and contains some book elements for world building and I love it love it love it

The Big Four and the Wizarding School by florana- completed RotBTD hogwarts au series and it’s my favorite one to ever exist.  It takes place before all movies and centuries before hp books; and it can be canon to all of them. It has lore and an absolutely gorgeous storyline that spans all books while still being singular stories. If ever you want a damn good hogwarts au, this is the best.

Interviews with the Highest and Lowest Degrees by BlackIce_K1lls- this one focuses on Nightlight interviewing several original characters which really open the Guardians’ world. I love the narrative style in this one.

A Problem with Flying by Starffledust- an exploration of Sandy through Dreamsand. Look, my words can’t do it justice, it’s so poetic.

Knights and Pages by Sylphidine_Gallimaufry- Christmas themed bookstore au! It has neat little character explorations and it means a lot to me, okay

Ice Bags, Fairy Tales, and Labels by Candaru- focuses on Jamie in therapy trying to learn to believe again.

Tales of Yore by M4rmalade- oh I used to obsess over this one so hard. It’s a Once Upon a Time type au with Jamie as the main character. It fascinates me so much, man you don’t even know. I love memory loss type situations

Touch of Magic by Earth Star- Once again I love modern magic aus. The story is so clean and good here, I’m always satisfied by the end of a reread.

Touched by a Snowflake by Melancholy’s Sunshine- Jack builds his own little family before the Guardians, starting with Baby Tooth.

Beyond the Fence by agent000- imagine if Jack’s sister resorted to witchcraft to see him again and it brought her to the future. Yeah. It’s fantastic.

These are a bunch of my most adored and reread fics from over the years. I’m not big on romantic stuff in RotG, so you’ll notice there isn’t a ton of that. Please please please read these, and give the authors a comment for their beautiful work. Seriously.

Actual Cat Adrien Agreste AU!

An AU where Adrien’s identity was eventually revealed to either HM or his victim which lead to a time traveling Akuma who cursed Adrien into a cat to prevent him from ever becoming Chat Noir (my bet is on Nathalie). He was thusly kicked out of his house and eventually ran into Marinette and became her pet. The akuma evidently didn’t know Marinette was Ladybug so she was able to slip by unnoticed until the events of Stoneheart. The story is just the first 5 chapters which is mostly story set up but I like it, and in kind of the same way as Chat Blanc and The Devastation it gives me story ideas :)

Whenever Adrien imagined sharing a hotel room with Ladybug...it wasn't like this. It was supposed to be on a desert island somewhere, they were supposed to be happy, and he always figured he'd actually know Ladybug's real name by then.

Instead, Adrien's injured and Ladybug's insistent on hiding him away from Hawk Moth. Plus, as if finding out he's been fighting his father for years isn't enough, Adrien's pretty sure Ladybug's been acting differently since she found out who he is. What he is.

And Ladybug...has no idea what to say to make things better.

Sentiadrien AU!

Started as a Ladrien June fic that got out of the author’s hands (as fics tend to do). Fic exploring the fallout of a HM reveal and Marinette’s subsequent spiral when faced with identity reveals that she can’t tell others about as well as Paris’s response when presented with limited information. Also touches on issues caused by Adrien’s unaddressed insecurities about control and abandonment.

In the Company of Others by Uniasus ( @uniasus )

No spirit is completely isolated, they cross from time to time. Jack spent his first three hundred years crossing paths with some heavy hitters, and now has to learn how to live with others on a regular basis

A set of stories that covers Jack’s time before and after the events of the movie and his interactions with Mother Nature, Old Man Winter, Peter Pan, and the Guardians as well as how Jacks status as a seasonal spirit and a guardian effects those relationships. Some exploration of magic in general and Jack’s magic outside of his ability to make frost, the effects of his power now being tied to number of believers, and how people might approach facing their own death as well as immortality.

It’s an interesting series of stories! You should give them a try!

fic rec! Gen ROTG featuring Jack & Jaime. 6K

Summary: Jack mostly made the speech up off the top of his head, but it wasn't untrue - believers were guardians in their own way. As he got older, however, Jamie sometimes proved he wasn't the most uh… effective guardian.

Comments: Look. Jaime tries so hard in this fic, okay? So, so hard to spread the belief of Jack Frost. But it's very slow going and has resulted in more frowns than smiles.

RotG and HiJack Recs

Alright, I'm building this list because some of these fics are just a tad dusty, and they could use more love. (A lot more love, I am literally dying from how much I adored these.) But note that a good few are incomplete.

Let's start with:

INCOMPLETE FICS

The Long Road:

Presently Gen, but Hiccup very much falls for Jack. He does however retain his feelings for Astrid, so bear that in mind. There's the classic Viking mindset when it comes to homosexual relationships that's pretty much giving Hiccup like a lot of anxiety.

But beyond that! I cannot shower this fic with enough praises! It gives me the same sort of excitement that the RotG movie does. Jack's characterization is Spot On. He's friendly and outgoing and also incredibly secretive and flighty. It balances out Jack's blunt mannerisms with a joyous charm and just that hint of vulnerability (which he keeps so well hidden lol).

The plots take place after HttyD, during the Riders of Berk TV series. Jack is folded into the Dragon Rider group who considers him some kind of Elf. Yes, this is Jack Frost in all his frosty glory. The way the story builds on a solid foundation of camaraderie and friendship, giving plenty of scenes to show how Hiccup and Jack became great friends, lends well to the Hiccup's realization of: "Oh I'm into him". Without giving too many spoilers, that "oh" moment is forever ingrained into my memory because of how PERFECTLY timed it is.

This blends Guardians of Childhood book verse with HttyD book verse, mostly via cameos over lore. Overall, a beautiful, fun, and simply enchanting read. I cannot recommend this enough.

A Story about Ice, Dragon Fire, and Belief:

Another gen fic. Mostly, it's about North looking at Jack and going, "he's my son now", and Jack having absolutely none of it. When placed together with Stoik and Hiccup's relationship, it becomes an almost interesting study of contrasts. North is the guy who's trying to prove something to a boy that he disappointed. Hiccup is the guy who's trying to prove something to a man that he disappointed. But ultimately, it ends up the same with a schism forming between the two pairs the harder one of them tries to breach it.

Also, it talks about how Jack is a force of fucking nature? And his blizzards can kill and have killed in the past? There's a little bit of trying to reconcile that with his new ID as a guardian. North is not doing a great job helping here.

But really the Crown Jewel of this fic is North and Berk's reactions to North (and by proxy his relationship to Jack). We go a little into the historical Viking side of things (like the pillaging et al), and apply that lens to this jolly old man. Let's just say some troubling (hilarious) assumptions are drawn. Also...

Everyone loves the sleigh.

I think this is one of the few RotG and HttyD crossovers that really do a good job of merging the two movies. Primarily because it's not just Jack in Berk. And this just made me hungry for more fics where more of the RotG cast arrive as Berk, and be just 100% fantastical and strange as the bedtime stories they are. Put some respect on the Guardians name, if you know what I'm saying.

In the Shadows of My Mind:

This one is an RotG only fic. No pairings except for whatever's going on between Pitch and Nightlight (and by proxy Jack). It's not a for real pairing. That said, it's such a complex and intricate relationship that doesn't resemble a romance but remains markedly intimate. Basically, this fic takes advantage of Pitch and Nightlight's ridiculously long history then throws Jack into the mix. Alive, human Jack in an early 18th century colonial town wherein he very recently did not drown (and boy, isn't that suspicious?)

My favorite thing about this fic is how spot on the dialogue feels? The lexicon, the syntax feels true to the time its set in. Although, I can't say that it is accurate as I'm not an expert of this time period in this region. Regardless, it certainly appears that a good stack of research went into this.

All that said, this fic has captured Bill Joyce's writing style the best, but with a deeper, more complex, more mature layer underpining that bedtime like vibe. There's a good host of OCs but genuinely, I didn't notice them as OCs. I could really believe they were characters of Joyce's books. Not to mention, they feel like fully fleshed out individuals even if they have like maybe two paragraphs of screentime.

The entire premise hinges on the idea of "what if Jack survived the skating accident" and everyone's reactions to that, as well as... the hidden secret thing that involves Nightlight. GoC spoilers are hinted so beware. But the little interplay between Nightlight and Jack is such a delicious little mystery, and also makes me so sad. These two boys deserved better.

Then we throw in Pitch for fun, because Pitch is always fun, and he just makes the whole thing even more complicated or as Jack calls it, "unnatural". But he's not even the main villain. It's Christianity. JK. That said, the fic does explore the idea of well, how would a fairly backwater colony be able to explain how Jack survived or... the powers that's slowly revealing itself from within him. There's a particularly nasty boy (around Jack's age), who is an OC and I believe an exceptionally well placed one. The OC understood his role to play and he plays it fantastically. Everytime he shows up, I too feel scared and indignant and excited all at once.

Speaking of great OCs, shoutout to Jack's Da. His appearances are brief but the impact is maximized with each appearance. He has that sense of realism and whimsy baked into him that I could gush endlessly about.

Overall, just a pure delight to read. Will re-read again and again.

Zastruga:

Total Gen fic. And a classic in my opinion.

I started reading this when I was in college - note the publish date. Nevermind the update date. Because even after all these years, this story? Still good. Still very very good.

This takes the original RotG plot and makes it more epic, and also more sad. RotG was very joyful at its core, which this fic somehow manages to retain. But it's just under a layer of sad. It's not overwhelming angst though, just enough to really pinch your heart.

Also whereas the movie has a few epic battles before things go really wrong, this fic stretches that out into a proper war against Pitch (and Jack). That's right. Jack is with Pitch ala Mother Gothel/Judge Frollo style. Jack isn't locked up entirely. He's given just enough rope to hang himself with. Mind the Jack whump is what I'm saying. But also do note that Jack's character remains as steadfast and loyal as he ever was in RotG, so the whump just hits nicer since this Jack isn't so irrevocably changed.

I have re-read this before. I will re-read this again. Nevermind the incomplete status. There's plenty of chapters that simply give me great joy.

COMPLETE FICS

It's the Great Spirit Sleigh, Hiccup Haddock:

Gen fic, in that there's no pairing actively getting together. But remains faithful to the original canon's hinted love interests. So Hiccup has a big crush on Astrid and Jack leans towards Tooth. That said, the relationship between Hiccup and Jack is just plain adorable and also heart-wrenching. They care about each other. So Much.

Now this is just a good holiday cheer. It literally has the Hallmark movie template, which is the point really. You know, the whole "oh no, a holiday is ruined" followed by "clever and charming ways to fix the holiday". With Hiccup and Jack taking the starring roles.

If you know your Hallmark movies, then you know that the leads get together in the end. And they don't in this fic. But the amount of "Gosh do I care about you" is so good. It's a lot of hurt and a lot of comfort. And I am here for it.

Also, this fic was completed way before the HttyD 3 movie so it doesn't have a canon compliant ending. That may be a bonus for some of you.

Scary Monsters and Super Creeps:

Pre JackRabbit (Bunny/Jack). But honestly the pairing isn't the main focus, mostly that Jack and Bunny admit to liking each other (but not to each other). So their dynamic remains in the best bros category. The pairing mostly shows through the plot machinations.

So long story short, Pitch opens the Guardian-Verse and recruits the other versions of the Guardians - the corrupt versions. And it's good, action/adventure fun. There's some gore, so mind that. Because the corrupt versions are nasty little things that fight dirty. Which makes the action feel like there's legit stakes. Also makes for a quick read because you must know what happens next? Did they get out of this sticky situation? Are they going to be okay? That sort of thing.

Things never are quite the same after that.

Every time I get into a Rise of the Guardians mood I wind up back at this fic.

If Jack and Bunnymund had started a friendship in 1818 when Jack was a young spirit, meeting up each year around Easter all the way up until Jack gets chosen as a guardian.

Summary: Things between Jack and Tooth are complicated - or at least some people are making it feel complicated. Jack tries to work out why and how and that stupid bird didn't help at all…

Comments: This is a delightful fic. I'm slowly going through everything this author has written in my fandoms, and they're all filled with messy, complicated character motivations and feelings and I love it. In this case, Jack is trying to understand his feelings toward Tooth. Does he like her or like like her? Is it affection or attraction? Being ace, it's a situation I can highly relate to and so it's nice to see it explored in a character I like. But I have never gone to The Stork for advice.
