I have never met a game whose story is fighting its open world concept as hard as Red Dead Redemption 2 does.
I've reached Chapter 6, and so far the main story of the game is the gang drawing too much attention to their crimes, getting into an epic shootout, and then having to shift camps, towns, even states, because they're wanted men.
It's 1899. The Wild West is dying, the strength of federal and state governments and their collaboration with Pinkertons is growing, an outlaw can't simply shift to the next town over with a different name. We're losing people, the law is closing in on us, everyone is feeling desperate. It is literally the story of our protagonist losing his old way of life and his world getting smaller and smaller.
But like. His world isn't actually any smaller.
How am I supposed to take Arthur saying "I'm a wanted man in two states :(" seriously when I have the whole map at my disposal, with any of the bounties I get (including ones from main story missions!) easily paid off at the local post office.
This is way worse than when open worlds make it seem like the protagonist is fucking around while the world is on fire! At least then it is merely that the open world is orthogonal to the main story, and some games even throw in a token reason to go running around (see: closing portals in Dragon Age: Inquisition). But here the open world actively fights against the deliberate claustrophobia and panic that the main story is trying to induce in us, which is the worst interplay of open world and main plot I've seen.

[image description - 4 by 4 risk assessment matrix. Across the top is severity - catastrophic (4), critical (3), marginal (2), and negligible (1). Down the right is probability - frequent (4), probable (3), remote (2), and improbable (1).
Each cell has a numerical score that is the row and column multiplied together. High is Red and between 12 and 16, Serious is Orange and between 6 and 9, Medium is Yellow and between 3 and 4, and Low is Green and between 1 and 2.
/end ID]
I came up with this three-way table to help me (and now you, if you want) to rate things out of 5 stars. I was thinking of books and films when I made it, but you can probably use it for other stuff.
Tumblr media
The idea is that you rate the thing on how much stuff you loved and how much stuff you hated, and those things weight against each other. There's only one way to get 5 stars or 1 star, so those should end up as the rarest ratings, wtih 3 stars being the most common.
'Spicy' means that the thing inspires emotion, whether positive or negative, while 'bland' means it doesn't affect you much either way.
An example of a 3-star (spicy) - for me personally - would be the Twilight series, because there's plenty of garbage in there but also some things that are like crack to me. I can't think of an example of a 3 star (bland) because by nature they don't stick in the mind.
(This also assumes giving 0 stars isn't allowed. That'd throw it out of whack...)

Gagged. The Devil’s Advocate (1997) is a banger film. It felt like going to church. The guilt, shame, and tension stayed with me throughout the whole thing. Would I rewatch it? Highly unlikely but it’s a movie that’s gonna stay in my brain for a long while.

Simplifying the previous adjoint matrix results.
[Click here for a PDF version of this (and the previous) post] We previously found determinant expressions for the matrix elements of the adjoint for 2D and 3D matrices \( M \). However, we can extract additional structure from each of those results. 2D case. Given a matrix expressed in block matrix form in terms of it’s columns \begin{equation}\label{eqn:adjoint:500} M = \begin{bmatrix} \Bm_1 &…

Gender:
Sexuality:
Nationality:
Ethnicity:
General health:
Physical description (e.g., face, hair, body):
Clothing preferences:
Job/s:

Backstory Template
Where were they born?
Where do they live?
As a child, what did they want to be when they grew up?
What do they actually do?
What gets them out of bed in the morning?
Are their parents still alive?
What is their social class?
Where do they like to socialise?
What is the defining moment of their life so far?
What is their greatest fear?
What’s the biggest lie they’ve told?
Are they religious?
Cat person or dog person?
Behaviour Matrix
Instead of creating detailed character profiles, you may consider making behaviour matrices instead.
Example
Selfish — Altruistic
Aggressive — Passive
Dishonourable — Honourable
Disordered — Ordered
Believer — Sceptic
Fervent — Restrained
Apathetic — Inquisitive
How to use this matrix:
For each row, pick from one of the columns.
This defines your character based on attitude and response, and avoids injecting any kind of ethical commentary.
These attributes are not inherently good or bad and, when combined, form a surprisingly nuanced sense of who the person is and how they might react to any given situation.
Even better, this behaviour matrix also allows for and actively encourages contradictions, which are the foundation of any interesting character.

the interestesting thing about the matrix, as presented in the famous 1999 film "the matrix", is that is actually not that bad for one specific reason. the people there are real.
its telling that in the movie neo is not given close friends or family or a partner or any meaningful kind of human conection, it helps to sell the world as distant and fake and inhuman.
but the thing is that any relation you form inside the matrix... is actually a real human conection. like say you are in the matrix and you start dating this really cute, cool person who likes to play boardgames and s a fan of romantic comedies and is studying to become and architect. that is a real human who is somewhere in the rows of human cultivated fields connected to a bunch of tubes floating in goo. but when they are talking to you in the matrix they are actually talking to you. the things they say actually mean something, the love you feel for each other is real.
like, thanks morpheus, your fight for Zion is cool and all but i have a daughter, i have my best friend with whom i went to college. and morpheus might say something about how the college was fake and it never existed but the moments i had with my friend were real!
the real problem with the simulation machine is solipsism. in a premise where you ARE actually the only mind that exists and everything else was a simulation then, well, that is a lot more scary (would it? if all your friends were AIs would that mean they were not real? food for thought), but my point is that is not the premise of that movie.
i would really like a story where someone is woken up from the matrix and they are resolute to find their partner somewhere on the fields of bodies maybe to wake them up too. or maybe the partner convinces them to go back into the matrix, i dont know. there is a lot of place for drama there.
the last matrix movie sort of touches on that but i feel it doesnt really count because it does it with neo and trinity who both got to know each other outside the matrix and also they were both forcibly put back and whatever

My shout-out to queer youtubers
Hbombs list was great but obviously not comprehensive. I watch a lot of video essayists and wanted to give a little love to the smaller channels that fall under the radar. Please feel free to add to this list!
let's talk about stuff/Sarah Zedig
If you've seen Jesse Gender's videos on the Matrix movies you may already be familiar with Sarah. She does excellent film and culture analysis with a lot of great conversations on paratext and outside influence in engaging with text. Her video on Tunic is one of my favorites.
youtube
Pamphleteer
No one makes videos like hers, which has the side effect making them a bit hard to describe. I will link one of my favorites which describes the disconnected temporality of being older when you discover you're queer.
youtube
Turbo Queer
Really really under watched channel. Skylar covers a lot of topics from video games, to anarchist history and modern events, to autistic life, to current politics. For a fun one check out her video on the SpongeBob strike episode.
youtube
Kaz Rowe
Kaz does a fantastic job examining modern myths and manufactured history primarily pertaining to western Europe, Victorian & Edwardian England, and 1800-1900s US. And of course, talking about historical queerness in all its ambiguities and evolutions. I highly recommend their video on Weimar Germany.
youtube
drapetomania
drapetomania interrogates the politics of low class and high class art and entertainment from a queer and Black perspective. Their art history videos alone cover many angles of white supremacist history I haven't seen anyone else discuss and I'm very excited to see more from them. They are also a very under viewed channel that more people should see!
youtube
I am error
Evelynn's channel primarily discusses video games in a presentation style and voice most similar to Action Button reviews. There's something just a bit more personal here though. I hesitate to say cozy since that word has a bit of an infantilizing connotation, maybe comforting is closer. She puts an immense amount of thought and empathy into the experience of playing video games and the personal narratives we build with them.
youtube
Swolesome
For more transmasc perspectives there's Swolesome. He has a lot of interesting insights into the more traditionally masculine and "broish" communities like fitness as well as commentary on recent trans issues.
youtube
Shonalika
Music, disability, and aggressively non-binary. Their video on gender presentation in heavy metal was really insightful. I would also check out the video "Why I Wear Gloves" for more insight on invisible disabilities.
youtube
Vivian Strange
Vivian delights in being a bit of a contrarian- something I really appreciate. She's probably going to challenge you and you're probably going to disagree at times, which is what makes her channel so important. Her video on Marquis De Sade is powerful and a must watch (if you can stomach the subject material, although I would encourage you to try). I haven't seen her most recent video on Saw yet but I am extremely excited to.

ask from over on cohost that i wanted to crosspost over here!!
Tumblr media
hi!!! i'm assuuuuming you're talking about the effect in this one?
Tumblr media
i'm using something called parallax mapping!! i know most people know what parallax is and how it works in the realworld but im just gonna demonstrate it real quick just so i dont have to keep going "ok now imagine how parallax works"
so imagine you have two windows. in the middle of the window on the left, there is an Orb. it is directly in the middle of the window. the window on the right also has an Orb, but this one is pushed backwards outside the window quite a bit. now if you look at the two windows, and turn them, you get this:
Tumblr media
for the first window, the Orb stays basically in the center of the window. but in the second window, if you turn the window right, the Orb "looks like" it's moving left
parallax mapping is essentially taking this assumption, that if you change the angle you are looking at an object, the further away an object is, the more it will move in the opposite direction. i will spare you on the matrix math involved but you can get the exact relation you need by getting the Tangent Space View Direction. you dont need to understand the math behind this to use it
so, lets go back to the window example, how would you make the same effect, but with just this 2d texture of the Orb?
Tumblr media
what if, whenever the object it was attached to turned right, you just moved the texture to the left, by X amount, where X is how far into the window the orb is. you would essentially be cheating god and "faking" the parallax. it would look like it's moving like it's far out of the window, but really, it's still a 2d texture. it would look like this:
Tumblr media
i was too lazy to make the shader and record another gif but i dont need to because functionally it would look almost identical because when you turn it right the Orb moves left
again, you can just Know the right direction to push the texture in based on the current angle by getting the Tangent Space View Direction. ok another example. what if you had a black and white noise texture, like this
Tumblr media
now what would happen if, instead of moving the whole texture X amount. you moved each pixel a proportional amount based on how bright it is. a 100% black pixel would not get moved at all, and a 100% white pixel would get moved the furthest along the Tangent Space View Direction. a pixel thats right down the middle would move half that distance etc etc. well it would look something like this!!!
Tumblr media
thaaat's the basics behind it!!! it's also used for effects like faking room interiors through windows with just a 2d texture in biig cityskapes and the like
Tumblr media
you can see how the cube example looks kind of like an ice cube with the distortion, that's Not intentional and how parallax mapping artifacts. i do not care about it, because i make crystals. but some people do care about it, so you can use parallax occlusion mapping, which is like parallax mapping but a step up
here's some more reads on it if you are interested!!! https://simonschreibt.de/gat/windows-ac-row-ininite/ https://www.patreon.com/posts/playing-with-29753575 https://catlikecoding.com/unity/tutorials/rendering/part-20/ https://halisavakis.com/my-take-on-shaders-parallax-effect-part-i/

Perhaps a Prosecutor! Phoenix, Prosecutor! Apollo, and Prosecutor! Athena (If you have a design for her)?
But if that's too much for you, perhaps just Prosecutor! Apollo?
Remember! Take breaks, drink water, and eat and sleep well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had such a fun time coming up with Prosecutor Athena. Her whole thing is that The Incident that occurred when she was a kid also included an explosion, which hurt her pretty badly, but Aura saved her life by turning her into a cyborg. She becomes a prosecutor so she can find the real perpetrator behind the crime, while Blackquill is a defense attorney on death row rather than a prosecutor (he’s basically just the same tho lmao)
I based her off of GLaDOS. Her face is split the way the Mood Matrix moon is split and her design incorporates portal influence as well as Aura (and her ponytail is in the shape of the ponytail for the “My Life as a Teenage Robot” Metis drawn a while back). Widget’s been turned into a core :3

I am SO scared to see what Charles’ reaction to Belle being pregnant is! I don’t know how to explain it, but in my mind, even though he’s gonna lose his MIND about the relationship and engagement, it is NOTHING compared to the pregnancy, because then he has to acknowledge that Max defiled his baby sister.
NO BECAUSE YOU’RE SO RIGHT 😭😭
The proposal? A meltdown. The wedding? A nuclear event. But the pregnancy? That’s when Charles enters full glitch-in-the-matrix, screaming-at-the-Monaco-skyline, calls his therapist twice in a row territory. Because you’re absolutely right—he can maybe just barely wrap his head around Belle being in a relationship. He might even manage to survive her being married.
But the minute he realizes she’s pregnant? That Max has been calling her mama and rubbing her belly and whispering Dutch nicknames to their baby?? That she’s having little Verstappen babies???
He will need a sedative. Immediately. 💀

fuck it. i'm headcanoning toji as a movie buff. he doesn't really bring it up, only shiu knows about it and you find about it super randomly. like you're watching smth and he just knows the movie by just looking at the tv for a second???? and you're like??? hello?? have you seen this??? and he says no??????? he just knows about it?????? and then proceeds to sit and watch it with you (he pulls your feet onto his lap btw this is important information).
toji likes films from the 80's & 90's the most – blade runner, scream, alien, the indiana jones films, evil dead, the matrix, se7en, the big lebowski, etc etc. he likes comedy and he likes action but he isn't afraid to watch the oscar baits either. honorary mentions to death proof and kill bill and ocean's eleven.
and i whole-heartedly believe he would pull some "um actually☝🤓" shit on you out of nowhere too?????? he definitely likes to make fun of your film choices but he isnt't actually picky and i think he's willing to watch just about everything. he laughs very loudly at the stupidest jokes btw. and also infodumps about weapons and fighting and points out every single time somebody holds a gun in a weird way or when an injury is unrealistic. he's scoffing and rolling his eyes but doesn't stop watching it bc it's so entertaining to watch people be stupid.
if you're younger than him, he most certainly pretends to NOT be surprised if you know the older films, he definitely tries to act a little pretentious lmao. but he is happy if you show interest in the films he likes even if they aren't your favourite. oh and i also think that he would LOVE is you asked him questions. bear with me bear with me - he acts like he's annoyed, probably places his hand on your mouth when you're laying down on his lap but then answers anyway. he answers every time.
he likes going to the cinema aswell. he always sits in the last row and he always buys popcorn (obvs). ANDAND AND he takes gumi and tsumiki to the cinema regularly too. buys them all of the sweets and popcorn they want. holds gumi's little hand as they walk up the stairs. gets super into the cartoons, leans toward the screen and everything. anyway he's silly. i luv him. thanks for listening.
