I've gotten like 4 The Trap questions yesterday, but basically my "official" stance is this: I now think The Trap was a much more covert comms than I initially thought, which I've discussed chaotically at turns but summed up here. And that is an aspect I really like!

Note: If Cas and Dean didn't have such a long history of covert communication, I wouldn't probably break it down quite so charitably.

A good example of the covertness imho is Theeee Bel line: Given the amount of time Dean knew Belphegor, it's distinctly odd for Dean to give Belphegor a cutesy nickname in this specific context/conversation. (Unless, of course, it's an dig. Which it is.)

The Bel of it all

I see a few layers in his mentioning Bel in this way. Make no mistake, Dean's making a not-subtle, purposeful dig. This is what specifically triggers the conversation to take a more negative turn. Cas gets growly and bites back in large part because Dean responded to Cas's condolences and initial vulnerability with a weird dig that included "Bel" in place of Jack. (Cas doesn't respond perfectly to grief either, but this? Cas is responding to Dean being weird about "Belphegor.")

But I don't think it's as simple as Dean wanting to respond to Cas's vulnerability with cruelty: so that leaves... right. Jack. (And Rowena.)

Mostly" Jack's death is still too painful for Dean to mention his name, so you get this smokescreen/stand-in in the form of "Bel." I talk about why I think Bel is such a sticking point here. Basically? I personally think it's about the ruination of Jack's body. I think Dean, in part, was open to Bel being in there to preserve Jack's body, both to delay the process of "decay" and hold out hope they could get Jack back somehow.

Covert comms are fun tho

But anyway, like I said, one thing I do like about the structure of this little run of eps is the coded messaging. Ex: These great lines in 15x08...

[Castiel sitting at the table as Dean enters and grabs beer from the fridge] DEAN: Maybe you went too far. CASTIEL: Maybe. DEAN: I mean, he's been in lockdown for quite a while, you know? Maybe you just, uh, went too fast. What's he doing now? CASTIEL: No idea. He was very distraught. DEAN: Yeah, but what exactly did he say? CASTIEL: "Leave. Get out. I want you dead". We didn't bond.

Maybe I went to far. Maybe I was in lockdown because I was in shock. Maybe you upped and left me too quickly. Etc etc.

In theory, I love the big ball of weird covertness that hovers around the season, but I do fall a bit on the Jackles opinion of things: it's a bit too much at times. With the amount of time they had left (ONE SEASON), it often comes off too strong and too opaque.

They opened so many cans of worms that nothing really landed, and then, when they tried to soliloquize it together and shoehorn in some follow-through themes in the last two episodes for each character, it felt... speech-ey and unnatural (imho). And at times, bad in the way that felt... like we were watching shapeshifters HELLO I'LL BE IN EVERY DROP OF RAIN.

The relationship negotiation is actually ok for me

At heart, I think it's a mostly successful negotiation of a relationship. But negotiations aren't as bad as they sound. It's not an apology per se; it's a needs-based conversation, and they're both aware of that fact as they participate in it. Dean is not obligated to forgive Cas, but if he wants Cas to stay, and his passive-aggressive barbs sort of imply he does want Cas to stay, I think it's reasonable for Cas to voice his grievances...

The conversation happens in part because Dean is signaling he wants Cas to stay. (Even with the: "Where are you going?" in 15x03) He further verbalizes his bitterness about Cas "up and leaving them." And Cas verbalizes where his own discomfort lies: in being disproportionately blamed (for a relatively small detail in the grand scheme of a situation they all had sufficient info to make better decisions about).

There's also the grief-anger that's preventing even the most basic of conversations ("I tried to talk to you over and over again"), and the grief-denial sidestepping Jack's and Rowena's death in favor of overly focusing on some evil ambitious demon Belphegor they met two seconds ago. Which is, again, both a coping mechanism and cruelty.

Dean is retroactively altering the narrative in his head, that he was "okay" letting Bel take over the world if everyone in his fam could stay safe/alive, that they could find a solution "with Rowena." But crucially, his actions towards Rowena and Cas during the actual episode were not safety-oriented. He was cutting and cruel towards both of them, to the point where Sam had to step in to protect Rowena, so it comes off a bit hypocritical in this case...

In a nutshell, Dean's gut has been wrong multiple times now, and he's pretending he's in control and knows what's best when everything's actually spinning out on everyone. There is no amount of "sticking to the plan" that will lend Dean the sense of control he so desperately needs.

I think it was okay for Cas to remove himself to process his own grief, especially on the heels of being blamed for Rowena's death and told to his face that he's what "always" goes wrong. (Always-and-never statements usually signal that Dean... isn't doing well.) You can't say shit like that and expect people to stay. The same way it's okay for Dean to process in his own way, Cas has to process in his, but if they're going to process together... well. You get the picture.

But anyway. The bookend! Is missing! Because Cas can't bear to give Dean empty promises and what will be more lies, he cuts off Dean's "I need to say something." Instead, Cas gives Dean all he can... by taking the Mark.

So, Cas throws his weight and strength around as a stand-in for the emotional support/intimacy/promises he cannot give without triggering his deal.

I think the anger directed at Dean in season 15 is mostly fan-based, not family-based

I don't actually think Cas or Sam or even Jack hold onto a lot of resentment for Dean's "mistakes" in this season, not even his falling in line with Chuck and proudly pretending he "always knew Chuck was squirrelly." (I don't even think Cas's words in The Trap are that weird on the heels of the "Bel" barb Dean made.)

All in all, I get the impression that the frustration with Dean is largely fandom-based and tends to overlook:

Dean has weathered being a friggin' archangel vessel

He's lost his mom, his son, and Rowena one after the other

Because of these Gatling-gun style traumas, he has soooo much going on that contextualizes all these bad things for Dean:

Trusting in Chuck's "destiny," and "fate-" style decision-making (actually uttering the unholy sentence: "'Cause you just heard it from God Himself…") was attenuated by both Dean's despair and active suicidality.

Thinking the Equalizer gun is the Only Way (TM) was a manifestation of his guilt; he feels like HE should stop Jack because Jack is HIS

Dean's existential crisis was brought on by Chuck's betrayal, but it was a lot rooted in Dean's need to escape that ghoulish voyeurism.

Dean's hardening into a field marshal-style commander was painful, but even in his anger, he relies on Cas as a partner. It's a dark echo of how they function together in Peace of Mind, as a unit protecting the well-being of the family unit.

(Aside: But it is also true that Dean drives over Cas's objections and seems almost entitled to "pressure Cas as the muscle" to go to Hell; it's true that Cas could've died down there and Dean didn't express care. Dean even moved into hard-marshaling Rowena, but Sam shielded her. I think it probably bothers Dean too that in his last moments with Rowena... he wasn't being at all kind to her or a good teammate.)

Dean is acting like this because he has no hope. Jack Kline, his "future," has just died. And just as he's actively suicidal, his extensions of "self," his "intimate family unit," his husband and son, are no longer valuable in the healthy sense, a bit of a off-key to how family annihilation functions

And so, Dean spills words of grief-anger, words meant to wound— to air his grievances

Then he suffers even more existential crises "my life's work is a hoax," "there's no point" etc etc

Then, there's his out-of-character focus on pure, bloodlust and revenge; it blinds him in a way we rarely see from Dean.

He loses sight of what he cares about; the Jack's "not family: line is a psychological balm specifically used to make it easier for Dean to sacrifice Jack for the Revenge/Cause

But Dean initially goes over the line when he resolves to lie to Amara in order to sacrifice her

Dean had resolved to be Jack's "second" in a suicide plot and brutally encouraged him/thanked him for shouldering the burdens so he and Sam can reap the benefits/“be free”

And Jack IS vulnerable to this; Dean knows how much pain Jack has been shouldering since getting his soul back. It's complicated, but Dean's almost... subconsciously using that worthlessness here... Jack's guilt makes Jack ripe for sacrifice. In some ways being a hero almost necessitates a lack of self-worth. This is also something Dark Kaia keyed into, begging Jack for help as she pressed on his wounds.

On the other hand, Dean is trying to remain neutral in some ways: if he's going to sacrifice Amara, then it's only natural he should be okay with losing his own loved ones, including pulling a gun on Sam (And I think Dean was serious in that moment btw, until Sam talked him down)

Cas is the opposite: he is absolutely willing to sacrifice Amara but NOT willing to sacrifice Sam, "I won't allow you to sacrifice your own life!" OR Jack "I won't watch you die, not again!"

I think Cas's line: "Where's Amara?" shows that, like how Dean comes to his senses about Sam and Jack, Cas is also coming to his senses about how wrong it is for Amara to be the martyr here...

ANYWAY, though. My point is...

Unlike the fandom, Dean's family has a lot of grace for him, largely in part because they've weathered their own existential crises and fucked up so much in the past.

I mean. With respect to Heaven-related existential crises, Cas is Theee Poster Child for it. If anyone gets it, it's him. And sure, Dean didn't always have grace for Sam, but mostly he did! I think it's a lot modeled by OG Bobby, too. This set the tone for where the family is with respect to empathizing with what Dean is going through.

And The Empty of it all

As I said in the long convo, The Trap is missing its natural bookend, Dean's terms, because Dean's terms about Cas would probably include (a) not lying, (b) staying, and ofc the unsaid I love you, and these points are all too tied up with The Empty deal to address. And in this case, that's a cruel, structural, engineered torture actively preventing Cas from being available.

Personally, while I don't agree with Cas initially withholding details about his Empty deal, Dean's fragility after the Michael-possession and his now-current wound of losing Mary, Jack, and Rowena do create extenuating circumstances. I can see where Cas might want to keep it under wraps, the same way Dean wanted to keep the Ma'lak box under wraps. And later in season 14, Cas and Dean had enough on their plates trying to wrangle Michael, soulless Jack, and workaholic Sam.

So, I'm of the mind that The Empty deal itself casts a long shadow over the natural bookend, actively preventing progress and disincentivizing Cas’s availability. (And it is quite surprising to me how often this point gets overlooked. It's not that Cas doesn't have patterns; it's that there are cruel, structural elements inflaming them and punishing openness.)

With too many character/narrative setbacks on the table, the story runs out of time and stalls

And a few throwaway lines and verbose speeches do NOT fix this. (Cas throwing in a halfsie about Jack being more than a destiny + Dean sparing Chuck with a lil "not who I am" speech come too late in the game, and imho don’t feel as big as they should.)

The actors could feel it, and the writers gaslit them about it, continuing to waste valuable run time in a season where the main plot simply needed to hog the spotlight. All the spotlight.

Dean and Cas get fouled up by the lure of the Almost Victory and virtually fail to recover. Jack's subsequent resurrection casts a long shadow over their progress, and they both take a hard turn into the very things they've spent a lot of time fighting against: Revenge and Destiny.

And even though they sink to unimaginable lows at the very end of season 15, they're allllmost triumphant in the end. Thanks to a combined TFW family support system, Dean comes to his senses and thaws to loving Jack again, and he wounds Death. Cas throws off the expectations for the Grand Story and tells Jack that Destiny doesn't matter. But they're both too late. For each other and Jack. Jack's black hole-destiny is already set into motion, and the story never really recovers.

crowley isnt dead he cant be. yes he is still alive. old dean is back. i love him he might be tough but he is sweet carina and kind and funny… sam is sick. baby has the mark!!and the darkness which makes sense.

s11 ep2(form and void)

A demon(king of hell) came for exorcism, perfect. poor jenna i liked her. im glad sam find the cure. cas will be better, hopefully.

s11 ep3(the bad seed)

Rowena is very short compared to Sam. Actually, everyone is much shorter than Sam, but I don't know, the height difference between the two is too much. Next to Sam, I would be like Rowena. he is too tall. Cas survived, finally.

s11 ep4(baby)

baby. baby is their home. baby is their happy place. i love seeing them happy. i needed seeing them happy, it was nice. john! werepire, i love dean so much. i would want to ride baby. if dean knew what she did he couldve killed her. this ep made me feel like i was with them in the baby. He shot the sheriff's deputy. ghoulpire:). The baby suffered as much as Dean and Sam. i thought we would see Chuck.

s11 ep5(thin lizzie)

finn wolfhard. I've never seen anything with him in it before but I know he's in Stanger Things and Ghostbusters. I didn't know we'd see him here. Len is a good guy. what happened to crowley?

s11 ep6(our little world)

cowley became an uncle but he acts like a father. dean and crowley they were bff's(in crowleys eyes). i hope they could still be friends. why didnt sam kill demons?

s11 ep7(plush)

i love donna. Sam is right to be afraid of clowns, by the way. is Charlie really dead? i still cant believe she is dead.

s11 ep8(just my imagination)

i knew about sully (because i saw spoilers,again). i thought this ep was going to be funny. and dean blames himself, again. dean is the best big brother. i kmow sam is dealing with something but all i can think about is dean. lucifer is coming, god isnt. The boys never found complete peace. They probably won't be able to access it until they die. I really want them to be happy but it seems impossible. Sometimes they have small happiness but it is not enough.

s11 ep9(o brother where art thou?)

amara finally became the darkness. if lucifer is in the cage where is michael/adam. hi luci. lucifer might be the most terrifying thing in this Show(especially in this episode). Dean should go to Sam as soon as possible. Did Rowena cast the spell wrong on purpose? Dean has to be there if Sam is going to say yes to Lucifer. If God comes, he will deserve every bad thing that happens to him. How many times was the world destroyed? He did not interfere with anything. he still doesn't interfere. Amara may be a little right, her brother betrayed her after all. Of course, there are parts where Lucifer is right. It's better if he doesn't come from now on. Where and what was he doing all this time?

s11 ep10(the devil in the details)

voicemail was funny. well, lucifer is not that terrifying now. but in cage he was. im not sure the darkness is the bad guy. i knew cas would be the vessel to lucifer someday but i didnt know it was today. wow. cas will be back(hopefully). rowena is dead im not upset. she really hates crowley. i hope lucifer can beat the darkness.

s11 ep11(into te mystic)

They had an deal but never followed it. But once Sam complied. Why? I still can't understand this. Dean was in purgatory. If he was in heaven, I would understand, sam would say Dean is in a good place and leave it, but Dean was in purgatory and suffered a lot. Why didn't Sam save him? dean is the vulnerable one. the darkness threw him off balance. and cas(lucifer) misha is so good. and jensen and dean he is georgeous. I can't take my eyes off him, most of the time I just look at Dean in every scene he is in. There are 4 seasons left and I want to see as much of him as possible.

s11 ep12(don't you forget about me)

jody and alex they deserved to be happy and they found eachother and now they are happy. and claire. dean and his love for food. claire is like a sister to winchesters, they are hilarious together. I miss the old plate, I still can't get used to the new one. I can't even say it's new anymore, but KAZ 2Y5 was different, idk. It was used for about 2 seasons, but I liked it more.

s11 ep13(love hurts)

dean has a death wish. what is he doing. why is he risking his life for others? well thats because this is who he is. still i want him safe. i didnt think dean would tell the truth to sam.

s11 ep14(the vessel)

i still cant believe Charlie is dead. misha is amazing. im scared. lucifer makes me anxious. well, at leat they kearned about lucifer. boys went through so much they still suffer, when can we just see them happy? i want cas back.

s11 ep15(beyond the mat)

dean was deppesed at the home but when he is on case, he is in a completely different mode. he sure knows how to hide his feelings. he does this perfect. Still, it makes me happy to see him happy. i love dean so much. sometimes he acts like a little boy(These scenes are one of my favorite scenes). i dont trust the demon who helped crowley. im glad he is out but i think lucifer wanted him out. did crowley really believed her? he looks disappointed. well, in the end he got away. dean:). The good characters on this show have all done something bad at least at some point in their lives. but they always tried to fix it. And that's what I love about this show.

s11 ep16(safe house)

i missed the old guys(They'd definitely be mad at me if they heard me call them old). i loved them so much. Why did the woman hide the scar on her daughter's leg and didn't tell the Winchesters? its really nice to see bobby and rufus again. dean is bobby, and sam is rufus it fits. sam and dean, of course they are bobby's boys. Dean was very confident that he would win rock paper scissors. but he still lost. Both of their facial expressions were perfect. dean is soft with kids. I love this side of him so much. i know winchesters will be safe, they'll beat the monsters but what if they cant this time. I assume bobby and dean saw each other since they were out of time in the nest. I'm glad bobby and dean were able to see each other again.

s11 ep17(red meat)

When we jumped to 48 hours ago, I thought we would only continue with that time. This time they chose a different narrative style. and i liked it. im gonna kill corbin. he killed sam. he cant be dead i know but still he killed him, well mabe he is dead, but he will come back. they always do. sheriff shot dean. sam how are you alive? i knew he wouldnt die that easy but dean checked he thought he was dead. how is he alive? i thought dean would try to contact crowley or even lucifer. wow sam was amazing. He killed 3 werewolves despite being seriously injured. and ran. dean didnt talked about billie because he knew sam would kill him for that. winchesters really do anything for the other one(exvcept one time sam didnt and i really cant undertstand why).

s11 ep18(hell's angel)

Why did Crowley kill that man? ruth conell! i knew we would see rowena again. but she is with the darkness. misha is amazing. lucifer is funny. Jimmy carries a demon, an angel and the devil inside him. he is really strong. of course you'll bring cas home. he'll come back. he has to.

s11 ep19(the chitters)

i thought jessie saved his brother in 19.. . at first i thought they were dean and sam. i think dean thought about john. when he was talking about revenge. I have many things to say about John, but I'm lazy right now. I can only say that I still don't hate John right now, I see that people in the fandom hate him a lot. revenge broke him. But he still tried to do good things for Dean and Sam. Most of the time he couldn't make it happen, but he tried and wanted it to happen. And I think that's enough not to hate him for now at least.

hi Chuck:) . i knew he would be god someday. but i don't know if he was God from the beginning or if God took his body in later times. i thought he would come in later seasons. i didnt think he would come this season. He spills beer on his shirt and irons it. perfect dean, perfect. metatron was good then power corrupted him. now whe is trying to convince god to save people. he is right. i think i like him more than chuck(god). Was Chuck just an act from the beginning? This is what I can understand from here. Metatron defends humanity. I guess he always loved humanity. especially their work. Was Sam having the amulet from the beginning?!! i dont know what to think about chuck. He could have done so much, he could have prevented so many bad things, but he didn't. only now intervened When there is no hope left. and again dean and sam was suffering. they almost died again. i think metatron saved the earth.

s11 ep21(all in the family)

kevin!!!!! the pain in deans eyes… donnt cofuse me with your dad … at least john winchester tried to protect his kids. Chuck did nothing and He still wouldn't have done anything if it wasn't for Metatron. He would let everything disappear. Did Chuck's hand shake when Sam was talking about Amara fog, or was it just me? yes, the mutant Ninja turtle:). i love dean so much. i know i say this a lot but these scenes make me so happy. I wish Dean treated Chuck the way Percy Jackson treated Zeus. There is Poseidon to protect Percy, but no one can save Dean from Chuck (except Amara, but Dean prefers Chuck to Amara), so he tries to show respect. rip metatron. he sacrificed himself for the universe. i knew Chuck would save them. Because who else could save them? father son Reunion.

Chuck and lucifer I can't stop laughing. Chuck know his son well. boys dont know what to do. I think the Winchesters are reviewing their lives right now. From simple monster hunting, they fell into the middle of the drama between God and Lucifer. lucifer is a teenager. Of course, Crowley is trying to take advantage of the situation. Chuck is acting like a mom. The apology scene is so good, especially the part where Dean and Sam explain the apology is my favorite. lucifer is happy now. he got his apology. Of course Sam is trying to sacrifice himself. It was going to be either Dean or Sam anyway, but since Amara and Dean had a bond, this job was left to Sam. i dont think ucifer s permanently dead. he'll retur probably. did she just kill god?! what happened to crowley? Did he only hit Amara once? i cant think anyone that could save them now.

s11 ep23(alpha and omega)

carry on gains more and more meaning every season. i love it so much. cas is back! cas is their brother and i like it. Did only the Man of Letter members in America die? Are there still other members in other countries? Dean's imitation of Rowena was very good and funny. amara is just confused. her brother betrayed her because of who she is. this really feels like the end. i know its not but still it was never like this. this Show is always about family, especially siblings. there is always dean and sam then Michael and lucifer now god and the darkness. its really beautiful. i like this ending. i knew mary was coming back(i saw spoilers, again) and i know that this isnt good. she should've stayed dead(like dean and sam remebered her). sam isnt dead. he cant be. Charlie didnt come back i still cant believe she is dead. I don't think I will ever believe it. even mary retuned why cant she.

Season 11 ep 11 thoughts since it’s my first time watching:

Loved this episode!! I was really digging the lighting in basically every scene

Obsessed with Misha as Lucifer pretending to be Cas in front of Dean—that was crazy good

Will never not be made uncomfortable by Dean and Amara’s weird connection thing because a) not feeling it at all and b) from the beginning of this season has given me nothing but the ick for being vaguely reminiscent of Twilight (that creepy stuff between Jacob and Renesme, a literal baby)

Eileen is an absolute queen and I love her

Didn’t know how I was going to feel about her and Sam since I’ve had basically the whole show spoiled in advance due to simply existing in fandom spaces on the internet but OMG THEY ARE EVERYTHING TO ME. His eyes sparkled when he spoke to her. Like?? This man was in love at first sight.

One thing I can always count on Supernatural to do is move on from a character’s death way too quickly. What do you mean Rowena is dead?? I genuinely almost forgot about that completely bc it happened so fast

Well, seeing as how Misha never appeared on the show, despite asking, says a lot. They fit in other cameos, like Rowena and the trickster, so why not him?

But okay, if you want to keep your hopes alive for Robbie to give the final word, and then claim it's not the final word because you need to hear it from Jensen, go right ahead. All I'm saying is that if this random EP/writer of a 13 episode show knows about Destiel and believes it should stay in fandom, there's a high likelihood that most of the others feel that way.

a follow up to this post searching instances and usage of the word "bitch" in season one. @stepmommycrowley suggested searching the word "skank" next in the tags of that post so here are the findings!

Every instance of the word "skank" in the show:

It's only been used in 13 episodes total. Of those episodes only 6 of them have come from Dean. And of those 6 times, 4 instances were directed toward an antagonist. Only 2 times were they in reference to a non-demon / witch. And one of those two times, in 10x01 he was literally a demon. The other time (10x23) he was heavily under the MOC.

Here is the breakdown + examples from my spreadsheet (click to view larger)

This time I've also included a column with the writers of each episode. I also listed briefly in the "examples" section who the other people saying things were, just for reference. Quite a few times are actually other women using the word. And in 10x17 Dean used the word to call Rowena an "evil skank" and then Rowena uses the word again, taking it as a compliment, and saying "Here's to evil skanks." Not saying that excuses the writers using it or anything, but it is interesting to note a good portion of the non-Dean instances are coming from other women.

Anyways so, the writer breakdown. Whomst is responsible for making Dean use this word? Well of the 6 times Dean uses it, 3 of those times come from a Carver episode (and one of those eps is co-written with Singer). The other 3 times come from Edlund, Kripke, and Dabb. The two times Dean says it referring to a non-antagonist are in Carver episodes.
