All knowledge pursued merely for the enrichment of personal learning and the accumulation of personal treasure leads you away from the path; All knowledge pursued for growth to ripeness within the process of human ennoblement and cosmic development brings you a step forward.
Every idea which does not become your ideal slays a force in your soul; Every idea which becomes your ideal creates within you life-forces.
— Rudolf Steiner, from How To Know Higher Worlds

i think one of the funniest thigs about having gone to a waldorf/steiner school is that they dont actually teach any of Steiners really wacky philosophies and ideas so when u talk w people who have actually read his stuff youre just left like.... that doesent sound right but i dont know enough about Rudolf Steiner to dispute it

When we raise ourselves through meditation to what unites us with the spirit, we quicken something within us that is eternal and unlimited by birth and death. Once we have experienced this eternal part in us, we can no longer doubt its existence.

...although no perfect triangle (or circle, or square) exists in nature, the idea of a triangle has as much existence as any physical thing of a triangular shape. What is more, when you or I think of a triangle, it’s not as if we each had our own, subjective triangle lodged in our minds. We both observe mentally the same triangle. And in doing so we each encounter a real, spiritual world. Because for Steiner, the outskirts of the spiritual world, so to speak, begin in our own minds... Steiner recognized that while physical things exist in a physical space outside of us, there is another kind of space, an interior space that we metaphorically say exists “in our heads.” ...it isn’t a physical but a mental, or, as Steiner calls it, a spiritual space... For Steiner, ideas were the “shadows” of spiritual realities; meaning that ideas were realities in themselves... And that, in a nutshell, is the core of Steiner’s philosophy. It is through our own minds and our power of thought that we gain access to the spiritual world.

If Steiner is right--that there is an objective spiritual world that can be accessed, observed, and engaged in collectively--what are the implications for artistic communication? A melody (the symbol) can convey the spiritual truth or concept the performer wishes to express. An audience perceiving the same song can hold and observe the real and true spirit of the message in the "inner space". But then how do you explain different interpretations of art based on a listeners lived experience, opinions, tastes, etc? Perhaps intuitive thinking is required to tap into the metaphysical in order to download the meaning in its true and right form. I think it's possible to sonically implant the object of your creation into a listener. It's like a spiritual bluetooth. I'm sure it's real even if I don't understand the mechanics and parameters yet.
In a way, I feel that all artistic creation is downloaded from the spiritual realm. Or maybe there is also works produced by the ego. Maybe that explains why some art feels powerful and inspired and others feel unimportant. Is that subjective?

Love is higher than opinion. If people love one another the most varied opinions can be reconciled - thus one of the most important tasks for humankind today and in the future is that we should learn to live together and understand one another. If this human fellowship is not achieved, all talk of development is empty.

"For the spiritual scientist, anger is also the harbinger of something quite different. Life shows us that a person who is unable to flare up with anger at injustice or folly will never develop true kindness and love. Equally, a person who educates himself through noble anger will have a heart abounding in love, and through love he will do good. Love and kindness are the obverse of noble anger. Anger that is overcome and purified will be transformed into the love that is its counterpart. A loving hand is seldom one that has never been clenched in response to injustice or folly. Anger and love are complementary.
Transmuted anger is love in action. That is what we learn from reality. Anger in moderation has the mission of leading human beings to love; we can call it the teacher of love."
Rudolf Steiner
