James was an abused child, growing up in squalor in poor parts of Ireland. His family moved a lot due to his father Cadán, inability to pay a mortgage or rent. His father was a heavy drinker, which meant he couldn’t keep a job or support his family. His mother Síomha was much the same though her choice of escape was something she could shoot up or snort. His twin brother was treated differently cared for because they knew he was different even being so young while he was not. Even now, middle aged, he doesn’t know why Richard got the better treatment but he was so thankful for that little blessing in his life. Though his relationship with Richard had broken a long time ago he knew his twin was much better off without him. The emotional abuse started first, their father then their mother would take turns especially while high or drunk. Even being so young Jim knew right off that he wasn’t loved by either of them. Their foul mocking words and utter distaste towards him was all the proof he needed. And it only got worse. Jim’s mother passed suddenly, drug deal gone horribly wrong. His mother wasn’t supposed to be there but a stray bullet killed her. Both twins being distraught and unsure of the future while their father Cadán went mad afterwards, abusing Jim and Richard constantly. He was only eight when it all happened, the complete dismantle of the Moriarty family.

Their father sent them away to live with relatives deep in the countryside while he drank himself to death. Those relatives weren’t any better then their father they treated him much the same and when his tenth birthday rolled around Jim was forced into hard labor during the summer months while off of school. Jim actually loved school, he was very good at nearly all his subjects. Richard prevailed as well but the twins grew apart, mostly because of the abuse and being separated during the summers. The abuse they suffered started taking a toll on their relationship as brothers. Jim was envious that Richard never had to hide his bruises like he had to. It was never fair for him.

Years passed before their father came to take them away. Only to force them to live back in the city. Drugs started to become an issue and that’s when Jim started to use the left over needles, just to escape the pain. Daily beatings and belittlements, cigarettes put out on his skin, bruises that took months of healing, cuts deep enough for stitches just ignored. Cadán refused to let the twins leave his sight, afraid of what the public might say. They weren’t old enough to go on their own, just barely 15. Jim snapped at 17 his mind and body passed the breaking point. He had become manic, depressed and overwhelmed, emotions jumbled in his mind so much that he didn’t know what he was feeling. He had to protect Richard though, he couldn’t let his twin be hurt anymore. He bought a gun and killed his father that same night. He didn’t flinch as the trigger was pulled, feeling relief as his father died. After he took so many drugs it nearly put him in the hospital from an overdose. Their life further crumbled, more then he expected it to. Richard was taken away, put into the care of an unknown family and he was locked away, in a juvenile home. The brothers never got to say goodbye.

His downfall into madness started there, it’s a hole he has never climbed out of. The dark sucks him back into the insanity, churning with psychotic tendencies and emotions.
