Cheap Aquarium Build

Money is a huge limiting factor in the aquarium hobby. I have sunken almost $700 into my current 5.5-gallon setup (X). However, this was not a lump purchase. Some of these components I have accumulated over nearly a decade of fish keeping! They are not all essentials. Also, I am a college student, which means my time and money can be rather limited. I am restricted to a 5-gallon tank (measuring 16.25″ x 8.375″ x 10.5″). Heres what that looks like currently: 

My goal in this post is to use online sites to create a cheap shopping list that I would follow if someone asked me to set up another 5-gallon aquarium tomorrow. My choices are based also on my previous experiences, as well as shipping costs. I am ignoring any discounts that may be for a limited time!

*I am not saying that I have used these exact materials and brands before, but this is what I would do.

Of all the products in the Seachem fertilizer line, I find Excel to be the most helpful. It is always the first I recommend!

Plants* Petco: $5.99 each 

I would probably buy these in-store to make sure I get plants up to the quality that I want. I would probably get between 6 and 8, but this is up to the individual. Beginner plants I look for are:

- Java fern

- Anubias

-Sagitaria

-Crpytocorynes

-Swords

Approximate Section Total: $68.45 - $80.43 USD

Also, get creative with the decorations! There are many types of natural rock and wood available. There are also artificial hides. Food-safe materials that have never been washed with soap are usually fair game as well. 

I hope this guide works more as an attractor than a deterrent. It is important to know what you are getting into! A smart shopper could probably set up a really nice tank for about $100.00 USD. I hope you enjoyed the read :)
