You are almost certainly just going to be leaving a voicemail -- I haven't gotten a live person in a while -- but if someone does answer the phone you can honestly just say the exact same message and they'll be like "okay thanks I'll let the the senator know" or something.

You can also say more, it's okay to keep it short! Just calling and leaving a message with the first two sentences is huge - the people staffing the phones tally all the messages they get, and elected officials KNOW people hate making phone calls, and that it means something when people bother to call them. Do it now, get your friends to do it, and then call again tomorrow!
* This gives the phone # for their DC offices. Most (all?) senators have a local office, which often get less calls. Google them to find that number and leave a message their for extra credit! Definitely do this if their DC office voicemail box is full!
