It's weird, because there really is a lot that isn't said about the Main Cast - a lot of which is really interesting - but... People would rather die than put serious, grounded thoughts into these characters, it feels. Especially if the topic is even vaguely uncomfortable. So, you get some nonsense on how there should have been menstruation in Homestuck, or that Eridan was never intended to die, instead of putting any serious analytical thought on Dave's abuse, or Jake's relationship with gender.

In some places, they're even worse. Not because anything has changed, but because some issues have been made more visible by the change of landscape on Tumblr.

Like, people have way more points of entry to be Transmisogynistic, for example. The Homestuck fandom has always been Transmisogynistic, of course - March Eridan... Certainly exists - but now we've got more people talking about Roxy, about Dave, about Jake, about Calliope, about June... And while the level of Transmisogyny hasn't really changed, per se, it's hard to deny that it isn't more commonplace, in a way, purely because the amount of discussions surrounding Transfemininity has increased.

CroTuna fans need to pick a fucking struggle that isn't that lame ass hill they've chosen to die on. Can you do something else, instead? Can you think liking Bluey is praxis or something? Literally anything is better, because literally anything else is funnier.

No one's normal about Personality Disorders. Cluster B Disorders especially get the shit end of the stick. It's unsurprising that the Homestuck fandom isn't normal about Personality Disorders when literally no one else is, for some reason.

It's just crazy watching people try to have you take them seriously and not look at them like they're fucking insane when they talk about their analysis that Cronus has NPD because he's terrible and abuses people. Like, what are you saying? Do you hear the words coming out of your mouth?

Dave generally keeps all of his most intimate relationships pretty private, it's why it's kinda hard to keep up with his love life in canon. He grew up under the lens of countless cameras for the pleasure of prying adult eyes. Voyeurism is a huge part of his story, as it is a strong aspect of the abuse he faced growing up. Particularly, said Voyeurism was a key part of the sexual abuse he was subject to.

The fandom's handling of DaveKat feels like Voyeurism because so much of the fandom is dedicated to showing them in intimate scenarios that just feel... Wrong to see. Like, you just know for a fact if this was happening in the comic, we wouldn't be seeing it. Some even have whole blogs dedicated to those kinds of private moments they'd have behind closed doors. The fandom eats it up and calls for seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths - with a nigh fetishistic fervor. Sometimes, it's really hard to not feel like they're in Bro's sleazy live chats, asking to see more of the cute young one.

Even PostCanon frames the rabid consumption of DaveKat content as Voyeuristic. It's not a difficult or out of pocket read, I don't think.

I think the secrecy of it all is fitting, personally. The hints we did get of the dynamic certainly don't sound very pleasant, though, much to the fandom's chagrin. On screen Kurloz & Mituna interaction would likely just be more Mituna Abuse Simulator.

And, no, I don't think she would be able to do that.

The issue is that Cannibalism is largely something used not as an expression of Control Issues, but as an expression of Consumption.

Consumption is a really interesting theme to me in fiction. It can mean a lot of things and be shown in a lot of different ways - possessive love, caves, abuse, codependency, capitalism, so on and so forth - but... It's just... Honestly completely nonexistent in Dirk and Jake's relationship. That's why it feels forced to me. I just genuinely don't know where people are picking up the theme of Consumption, especially hard enough to start talking about Cannibalism as a natural extension of it.

i guess what i mean by deserving better is just that, like... terezi deserves someone who thinks she's fucking hilarious, and is willing to play along with her little games. as much as she likes karkat's overblown reactions, he's not exactly a good sport, and that's not even getting into his mixed signals. Meanwhile, on Karkat's end, he fucking loves romance. Cheesy, corny, sappy romance. Soul mates and destiny. If you want to understand Karkat, watch Serendipity, one of his favorite movies. My god. If he showed that to terezi she would never let him live it down.

Its not often I participate in online arguments... or ever... but just this once, I'll throw my hat in the ring. You right, DaveKat is not a good ship at all. I'm a new Homestuck reader (currently at page 4488). I'll never ever get into the sequel stuff of Homestuck bc of the horror stories I've heard of it but even then, when I heard DaveKat as a ship I was like, "Huh??? That's a ship??? and its popular??????" because I don't see the vision. Dave and Karkat have no chemistry like what is their relationship like?? Karkat going on his millionth rant that day and Dave pissing on him for it like??? AND there isn't any build up to it to which I heard it was forced upon. Like for what? For what purpose?? But you know what I do like? DaveJade. I'm a big DaveJade fan. Not only do they have a lot of chemistry but like their dynamic, the contrast between the silliness of Jade and the cool guy Dave is SO fun and SO SO cute. Also Also, Dave and Jade's relationship just feels so real to me. Like I think Jade is like the only person Dave really enjoys talking with other than y'know, Rose and John. iirc (bc its been a while since I continued reading HS) the only time Dave smirked while talking to someone was with Jade on page 382 (which I only found out ta'day :0) and no doubt in my mind Dave was excited to meet Jade when she finally got into the medium and helped her out finding the frogs on her planet. I also think that Jade would be a very supportive figure for Dave givin his insecurities about himself, that at least she thinks Dave is very cool even when he thinks otherwise. Another thing, Jade did not have to go out there dressed all fancy n crap like for who you so fancy for? DAVE OBVIOUSLY!!! Also I ship Karkat and Terezi bc they have a very funny dynamic lol (I think what sold me on DaveJade was this album art from Vol 8 LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE!!!!)

Dave and Jade could really help and support each other. Jade wants to see the outside world and gain connections with people as Dave learns to open himself more and know he can be vulnerable at times with those he care for so that he can have confidence to still be strong and cool in his own way. Both of them can be out to do whatever they want together. If not just them, then with friends too. See the world they have never saw before when they were stuck at home (get it? Cuz Homestuck lmao). I think some of the Homestuck pairings was suppose to be this. Couples that not only have great chemistry, but also ones that can help grow and mature as people for the new universe they would eventually live in. And it's that support that would soon lead to be with their friends to rise and stand up whatever is facing them. It's why DaveJade works. I don't see it working with Davekat. Most fanon I see has them kind of stationary. Never changing to be something else. Even now, they are just depicted as people that stay the same and too nervous to grow out from their comfort zone.

mostly it's just thinking about what their dynamic would be like if they Were to meet. both of them love to talk. like, if you were to put them in a room together and they got talking i don't think they'd stop for hours. their personalities clash would in a lot of ways, but at the same time i think they would understand each other more than almost anyone else. both of them put up fronts that the other is able to see through. also they're both called insufferable by their friends in the comic LMAO

some ppl think its just another davekat and i mean, kind of but not really? the way dirk and kankri would interact and develop a relationship would be somewhat similar - complicated and riddled with insecurities from both parties - but i think it manifests differently in both couples.

a lot of my thoughts on dirkkri rely on stuff that happens in alphaswitch which i cannot talk about right now so... apologies if this is a bare bones answer

lmao lemme tell you the whole story since i don't think i'm gonna write the actual chapter, there's too many other stories ppl are waiting for updates to. so i'll spell this out.

(lol this wound up being long enough to almost be a chapter so for context: this is a summary that functions as the epilogue to out here the good girls die. that fic is explicit, DaveKat but also very strong nonsexual KarkatRose vibes. content includes a trans man getting pregnant, no in depth discussion of the physical aspects of that but he does so willingly.)

for context: this takes place maybe a year after the end of the fic. by now, Karkat is a councilor for Vineyard because of course he got into local politics. Rose works as his secretary and basically works on her own political agenda from her desk. Rose has ambitions to make Karkat governor someday. Karkat is loudly adverse to this, but Rose is building quite a coalition of her sex workers' union, small business owners, hospitality workers, etc. so, give her five or ten years.

in Vineyard, Karkat and the Twins are a common topic of the proverbial grapevine. a handsome former Ranger who brought twins back from Vegas? my god.

No one quite knows what is going on there. Is Karkat fucking his secretary? or wait is he cheating on his secretary with her brother? or wait is he sleeping with both of them? also sometimes its hard to tell them apart.... they come from back east, are they manipulating Karkat? what the fuck is going on there? this is all encouraged by Rose, who says its a benign way to keep Karkat in the local news and that helps come election time.

dave is mostly relaxing, decompressing from a long life in a high stress job, and hanging out with karkat's dad and learning to cook and tend to crops. he tries out hobbies. it's nice. unlike rose, he doesn't really have an ambitious bone in his body.

ANYWAY: but like. the reality of being sex workers, rose and dave have gotten pregnant before, but by now they know the signs and they probably keep an exact cocktail of medicine to either Plan B themselves or medically abort as needed. like that just.... seems logical for the setting? not a huge deal.

in Vineyard-by-Navarro though, I think it eventually happens to Dave again and Rose is first to notice and is like "mmkay lemme run to the pharmacy" and dave's like "hm." and keeps going "hm" for a while and thinking a lot. like, a lot.

rose gets kind of impatient with him and they have a minor fight in the living room. karkat comes home and is like "do you guys need a mediator or should i just wait outside until you're done" and dave is like "actually. i think we could use a third opinion here." and rose is just like "kldsjalksdjf SHHH"

but dave and karkat talk and are game to give it (baby) a shot. so rose changes on a dime and shifts into a mindset not unlike a bomb defusal expert. she makes plans and shit and sets up for an expansion to be put on the house, all that.

the only thing that adds a wrinkle; dave is pretty okay with the whole "dude having a baby" thing but he doesn't want it to get out around town, he just doesn't want to deal with Other People's opinions on the matter, right? so. obviously. rose and dave need to swap places. that's just logic.

that's how Karkat learns that Rose and Dave purposefully keep their hair approximately the same length, and with a little work, they can mimick each other. when Dave drops his drawl and puts on Rose's posture, Karkat is lowkey freaked out, but Dave always is quick to drop it when no one is around, discard it with the casualness of tossing out a balled up paper.

still, the fact they can fucking just swap gives Karkat a reminder of his first impression of them, that a pair of New Vegas twins were dangerous.

anyway, Dave goes to the office with Karkat and answers to "Rose" and-- okay he's not as good at Rose's actual job but when word gets out that "Rose" is pregnant, everyone goes easier on him anyway, it's fine. and it makes lunch breaks a lot more interesting; dave gets bored, finds a gap in the schedule, and has a locked-door meeting with Karkat. the rumor mill is having a ball with it.

Rose, on the other hand, is SO FUCKING BORED. she's so bored. every night she grills Dave on what he DOES all day. Dave's answer does not impress her. so Rose eventually gets so bored, she goes out as Dave and looks for a job, and settles on an open afternoon position at the Vineyard radio station.

which in turn leads to another hysterical fight that goes a bit like

ROSE: Perhaps I became concerned about my dear brother, sitting around at home with nothing to enrich his life, wilting like a cactus bloom. DAVE: aw no fuck that and fuck you, I entrusted you with my identity and you go and get me EMPLOYED? you got me a JOB? ROSE: You know there are many who would be extremely blessed to have such a service. In fact, you may find that you are already very popular at Radio Wine. DAVE: you are playin with some fire, sis, given who is wearing your stupid fucking heels and sitting at your stupid fucking desk for the next few months. ROSE: That threat is more than a little uncalled for. Did you not notice I went out of my way to select a job I thought you would be amenable to? KARKAT: [silently eats dinner, shaking his head to himself. how the fuck is this his life. how.]

so that's life for a while until Dave is far enough along it's reasonable for him to prep for having a baby. "Dave" conveniently informs her new employer at the radio station that she's gonna be the midwife and needs to be on-call to run home. everything is set.

Karkat is like "Are you two both addicted to, like... complexity? I feel like you made this whole situation much more complicated." Rose is like, "Well, yes. We are still con artists, and one of the techniques for controlling a mark is to make things just complicated enough that they are spending too much time trying to understand the situation." Dave nods. "Yeah, they're too busy keeping the dominoes lined up, so they have less time to catch you." Karkat points out, "Yeah but who are you conning here." And the twins change the subject because they don't want to admit they might've done all this out of habit.

anyway, the twins decide the baby should definitely be named Vantas so if in the future there is legal trouble and the NCR tries to deport them back to Nevada, either of them can claim to be the parent for legal protection. Rose says she'll use her connections to get them each a fake ID to back up the story. Karkat feels a headache coming on.

but baby is born! everyone takes some some time off, and dave and rose swap back. rose also notes aloud that being a family man looks good to karkat's future constituents. karkat tells her no.

the rumor mill spins up again when Karkat and Dave and Rose and new baby Vantas go on an outing to the broadwalk. eventually, Rose will start winding up karkat's mayoral campaign behind his back, and they'll all be happy. 8)

I love alt!Calliope and Ult!Dirk conflict, because they're similar in ways but so different in another.

Like, Dirk is always was about action. In homestuck alpha kids enters medium because of him, and even his relationships with Jake impact others (and basically starts trickster arc, lmao), and exactly him tolds about that alpha kids basically needs only waiting and they never was supposed to have some kind of action. (Funny thing: Calliope after her death is basically the same)

and he also can't stand his other versions and himself. (Funny thing that it's basically about ALL Dirk's. Dirk can't stand AR, then Ult!Dirk is very aggressive towards Dirk, and more and more and more).

His meat epilogue filled with actions, with some story. With some kind of actions, his epilogue has a storyline. He knows that reader is there, and reader is waiting something to happen, and he makes it happen. But no one osked what "something" reader is needed, right?

With another side, Alt!Calliope have a "meat" character too. She is cold, strong, confident and he took superiority over her brother. Despite that, when she meets her "weaker" version, and when she ask Alt!Calliope what she needs to do, she answer: "live." (Also, funny thing: when Ult!Dirk meets his "weaker" version he just freaks out and became even more control freak and he is even smile ONLY when Dirk "thinks" like he do.)

And in candy epilogue characters just.. Live. Of course almost every one have depression and etc (half joke ok. Does Earth C have a psychologists at all?), but they're live. No fight with Lord English, no questions and answers, they're just live, even if well.. Bad. But, as rose say, with this whole situation, "they have what to do."

And it's difference between them: when Dirk growed up in survival mode, he now can't just live. He doesn't know how to. He always needs something, and he make it. In meat epilogue everyone in action, or everyone who he choose to be. Trikster mode (that basically make you forget all your troubles and just have fun) doesn't affect him at all: he just can't. Because he is to busy with being himself.

And with another other side, they're both have favoritism and neglect in their epilogues:

I know that candy epilogue writed with usual black text, but when you're imagining that it's writed by alien with red color text it makes some sense. Like, how Jane suddenly got Jake, and Jake even didn't care about Dirk that much (I know he could be just tired of him but... You know he can but alt!Calliope could increase that feeling like Ult!Dirk made Jake's affection towards him obsession with him.), how Roxy live happily even after her failures? And how Dave basically agreed to suicide to became ultimate self and davebot and guess who have a weakness toward Dave and our alien friend with red color text knows it? And how in meat epilogue davekat became canon because Dirk "helps" them too? How Dave basically became a Main Hero of that story? And Jake, who neglected by him.. I don't know at that one. It's could be a nice gesture, like "live how you want", because he isn't included in team that will go after Ult!Dirk to stop him, or it could be a truly neglect gesture. Sorry.

And also that's funny that Ult!Dirk in some moments talks to reader and in some way he "feed" reader (reader is reading thing - he awaits that something will happen.) With that he thinks we want or with that he wants. And alt! calliope is like just don't care about reader she just don't care

In the end I'm just laugh about how they're have similar base, but they're so different in the end, it's just funny. Is Paradox Space have a psychologist? Anyone? Huh. Not so good for them, I guess.

for the ship ask game, davekat and/or dirkjake?

I am very normal about davekat (gripping the desk)

it’s definitely been said by a bunch of other people but they pair together perfectly in their wacky ways and can be open to eachother in way that they couldn’t with anyone else

I don’t personally like how hs^2 went through with them (felt too shallow/whumpy if that makes sense), but although the eps were shitty at least meat davekat felt the same way canon hs felt to me (behavior wise but I don’t want to go into detail ab the eps/hs^2 too much on this lmao)

I’m conflicted ab dirkjake cause on one hand they both have feelings for another and would’ve been a possibly good relationship, both of them also had a shitton of stuff to work through (cough cough mainly dirk) in order for them to be healthy

a big chunk of jake was his whole journey of coming to terms with his bisexuality and poorly attempting to balance out his relationships (while failing miserably to pick up the subtext from them)/his own self (and according to what we saw in the eps/hs^2 dude never truly became his own solid self without knowingly being a pushover)

dirks whole thing is being wrapped up in his own head so much that he villianizes himself and only further cracks his identity and self in the process. dude thinks so much that he ends up beating his emotions into a corner and isolating himself in the process. I’m not even going to go into ep/hs^2 dirk cause that whole thing felt like a horrid mischaracterization (which is upsetting to see from LITERAL CREATORS OF THE CONTENT), but if I did want to expand on them I think dirk just needs to accept that he isn’t a villain and needs to love himself, splinters and all and admit that he makes mistakes

dirkjake didn’t work out cause dirk is an emotional man of subtext and jake didn’t pick up on it (the autism loses in this scenario) and they weren’t geniunely open to eachother in a way that’s needed for a relationship. they’re just both fucked up teenagers that never learned to work it out properly

also I've only read up to not far into act 5 part 2 so there is admittedly a lot I don't know :P I definitely don't have the anything close to the most objective opinions on junk

JADE IS MY FAVORITE I LOVE HER!!!!! I threw together a crappy little jade cosplay once I made a little tail it was so cute :3. honestly Jade is the biggest motivator I have for actually reading Homestuck cause I love her sosoososo much and I'm really interested to see how she develops!!!!!! every day I wake up and the first thing I look at is a print of her on my wall I love you jade harley

speaking of characters I like I love nepeta SO MUCH and like 80% of the reason why I haven't read more Homestuck and choose to consume fan content instead is cause I'm scared for her to die :(

jadepeta is horrifically underrated (I know they don't interact really shhhh) and probably my favorite Homestuck ship :3!!!! doggirl catgirl yuri! they can be cringe together! they parallel each other in their loneliness!!!! they can help each other know that they ARE wanted and needed and loved!!!!! what more could you want!!!!!!!!

dunno how to feel about vrisrezi? I haven't gotten to the part in the story where they're more fleshed out and stuff. they seem uh? not great for each other? which is why I'm kinda surprised I see people shipping them so much. maybe they get better idk. THEY ARE SO INTERESTING THOUGH OH MY GOD. I WANT TO PUT THEM IN AN ENCLOSURE AND STUDY THEM I NEED TO LEARN ABOUT THEM MORE

I really really really like rosemary HOWEVER lots of fan content (specifically fanfiction I have found like 2 good rosemary centric fics) doesn't explore them really I feel and this makes me kinda sad :(. they're just the lesbians and are happy and love each other and that's great but their dynamic could be so much more!!!!!!! the competition!!!! them being at different levels of being invested in the relationship!!!!! rose not opening up to kanaya!!!!!!!! the drama!!!!!!

I think the only troll I just flat out hate and don't think is interesting is equius honestly? idk hes creepy :(. and racist :(. with some of the other trolls I go okay you are definitely very very VERY flawed. but I want to see why you are this way (especially eridan). with equius he's kinda just terrible and doesn't seem all that fun to explore. my opinion could change though maybe I haven't given him a fair chance :P

i think a really big reason why I'm so attached to the beta kids is cause they remind me of me and my bestest friends tbh

I have no opinions on the alpha kids honestly. just haven't gotten to where they're introduced and haven't looked into them that much :P. I think roxy's gonna wind up being my favorite of them though she seems so silly!

I think my favorite thing about homestuck so far is how big the theme of loneliness is? especially with the beta kids (in my mind at least). like I don't think any of them mention friends besides each other and Jade literally lives on an island completely alone. I like how all the beta kids deal with this loneliness in slightly different ways too! and then troll society is so hostile that it's almost impossible to make meaningful connections. I'm just a sucker for when a group of characters are outcasts and weirdos but they find community in each other! :) gotta be one of my favorite tropes

another aspect I really like about Homestuck is how it takes things that exist in videogames only and adapts them to its world (captchalouges are the first example I think of)
