J2 Fic Rec: all-time faves

These are my favorite of my favorites, as of today, in no particular order. All on AO3. Enjoy!

Yours by Any Other Name by Nyxocity: 3491 words, the first J2 fic I read that made me a fan for life. Non-AU, character bleed. Jensen gets jealous after watching Jared make out with an actress on set most of the day. Jensen then proceeds to show Jared he belongs to Jensen no matter who he is--especially if he's Dean Winchester.

What You Should Know by sonofabiscuit77: 16412 words, amazing AU with so many gorgeous feels. Jared is a mechanic in a small Texan town with a big secret. Jensen, a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps, is that secret.

Full Service Firm by rivkat: 11881 words, maybe my actual favorite J2 fic of all time. AU and extremely hot but with the most satisfying ending. Jared thinks Jensen’s a sex worker and Jensen just goes with it, for...reasons.

I Kind of Liked It Your Way by Chash: 10027 words, I love a good virgin story, and it’s a college setting, to boot. Chad gets Jared a hooker for his birthday, assuming (probably rightly) that Jared will never manage to get laid on his own.

we're still more in love than you think we are by forallthewords: 24824 words, one of the best high school J2 stories there is, and I’ve read A LOT of them. Jensen Ackles is not perfect. The thing about Jared is he never wanted him to be.

Screw You, We're From Texas by makeit_takeit: 74894 words. Angsty but amazing J2 roommates-to-friends-to-lovers with lots of Texas culture. This is what could have happened if fate twisted differently, if they never got those big Hollywood breaks and instead ended up living the lives they grew up expecting to lead. More or less.

Jared doesn't flirt with married customers, and Jensen is very married. Until he isn't.

Best Kissing Scene Ever

Jensen removes his glasses and rubs the bridge of his nose. As if magnetic, Jensen’s incredible green eyes draw him in.   Jared doesn’t remember moving closer or raising his hand until he feels the prickly roughness of Jensen’s stubbled cheek under his fingertips. He gazes at indecently plump lips. “Please,” he begs as he starts to tilt his head down.   Jensen nods and lets his eyes close. Jared absorbs the way Jensen’s lashes fan out against his cheek, a dark feathery whisper. Their lips meet and that heat soaks into Jared again. From his mouth, down his throat, firing his lungs, expanding his heart. A breath later the soft wet tip of Jensen’s tongue runs along the seam of Jared’s lips. It retreats quickly but Jared still feels the touch like a burn. He does the same thing. Licks just a little at the fullness of Jensen’s lower lip, tasting him with a kitten nip.   Jared feels desire spark deep in his belly. Jensen reaches out again with his tongue, running it slowly along Jared’s slightly open lips, first the bottom, then the top, then a thin stripe back along the bottom before bringing his teeth together to gather the soft flesh in the gentlest of bites. Jared’s been sexually active since he was sixteen years old. And this is the most sensuous experience of his life so far. Jared’s erection is straining now, nearly painful in his jeans. Mouths melding and dissolving together and tongues probing firm and sure. Exploring like every millimeter is precious. Jensen’s hands are clutched around Jared’s back now and Jared’s fingers have moved lower, drawing Jensen closer until their hips are undulating in a persistent wave. He has only one direction. Closer.   It’s so hot. So good. Scorching and probing and explosive. Friction clawing at him like the scratch to a mad itch. Like a balm pouring over his soul. He’s inhaling and devouring and he still can’t get close enough. Jensen’s lips are ghosting over Jared’s face now, tender baby kisses that leave small explosions behind, skin tingling as if every atom is charged. Hot air on his ear, tongue dipping inside and the molten jolt leaves him breathless. He hisses Jensen’s name as his hips jerk up and pound against the hard curve of Jensen’s cock. Jensen whispers ”Jared” once before reclaiming his mouth, sucking him in, tangling possessively. It’s gentle and punishing at once. Jared doesn’t know how long they sway into each other, kissing languidly like children eating ice cream cones on the hottest summer day. Air is slowly reaching his brain. Shooting silly things like thoughts and awareness of bodily sensations. The stickiness in his jeans registers first.   Pulling back, Jared looks down as if he really needs to see evidence of the wet spot to make sense of the oddness. He fastens wide eyes back on Jensen’s face, twists his mouth in a wry smile.   “So. That happened.”   Jensen drops his head, but not before Jared makes out the deep red blush. He tilts Jensen’s head back up with a finger to his chin. A slightly hysterical laugh escapes. “Holy shit, Jen. You just made me come with a kiss.”   This has never happened to him before. Not like that. Full on sex hasn’t felt so fucking good. He knows he’s staring like a loon but he can’t help himself. Jensen is looking at him questioningly. He’s still flustered and clearly embarrassed and probably still partially turned on like Jared is himself. Jensen narrows his eyes slightly and tilts his head as if making a decision. “I like kissing.”

It’s been a while since I’ve read J2 fic, so my recs won’t be particularly recent. (As you’ll see with all the LJ links!) Hopefully these are close to your preferences. Here we go!

Dawnbringer Verse by Lexicale. A true classic in fandom. 300k. “The story follows Jensen and Jared, both werecats and both dealing with loss but coming from two very different situations. The fic explore their relationship as well as the world of the ‘ailure,’ a race of creatures capable of changing their shape from cat to human. The series is now complete.”

Beholder by Sandymg. All my favorite tropes in 80k. “Jared was passionate about the work he did with the animal shelter. Between that and living with Sandy, life was satisfactory. Until the cold night that the filthy, homeless man hidden in an oversized hoodie was dumped at the shelter and Jared couldn’t just turn him out. Even if the man roared and called himself 'Beast.’ Because under the hood, Jared was sure he caught a glimpse of a prince in those green eyes.”

In the Small of My Heart by Cherie_Morte. This fic made me cry so much. It’s not very long, but omg. 16k. If you wanna cry, this is a great way to do it. “Jared is a borrower. At just under four and a half inches, it’s his job to venture out into the world of bigger men in order to find and borrow (not steal) the items he needs to support his family. His whole life, Jared has lived by one rule: a borrower can never be seen. But then Jensen moves into the big house, catches Jared red-handed in the middle of a borrowing, and lets him go instead of trapping him. Jensen isn’t greedy or dangerous like the giants Jared has always been warned about; he’s sad and sick and, more than anything, he’s lonely.”

Who Watches Over Me? by Nyxocity. I mean, just read all of Nyx’s work, because it’s that good lol. 97k. “Jensen Ackles is an ex-Navy SEAL turned civilian bodyguard with a mysterious past. Jared Padalecki is a flamboyant Hollywood star known for his action movies who’s been receiving death threats. The case sounds like Jensen’s idea of a nightmare, and he takes it on against his better judgment. Jared drags him to clubs and parties and award ceremonies without any care for how difficult he’s making Jensen’s job, and to his complete lack of surprise, they hate each other. But when hate changes into passion, it begins to reveal something deeper between them, and Jensen realizes he’s in over his head. Can he still do his job and keep Jared safe? Or will he fall prey to his greatest fear and fail someone… again?” 

I’m currently (slowly) making my way through “Redemption” by JCRGirl. It’s more emotional hurt/comfort, and I’m only on chapter 8, so I can’t tell you how things work out sex-wise between J2. But it’s one of the more recent things I’ve read that’s stuck with me. :) “Running from an abuive relatonship, Jared and his twin sons arrive in the small town of Wowakan, CO. Picking up the pieces, a complication comes in the form of Jared’s ex-boyfriend, Jensen.”

Without Recourse by Sylsdarkplace (they have a whole tag for dark fic AU’s) 39k. “In a world where corporations set the rules and being unable to pay one’s debts makes a person a criminal, Jared has little choice but to indenture himself to a stranger.”

Sharp Teeth by meus_venator. (I don’t remember if this is bottom!Jared, but I do remember loving this fic when I read it. It had a big influence on me.) 135k. “After being kidnapped from Earth by galactic slavers, mechanic Jensen Ackles is taken to a foreign world where he is put into service as a sex slave. While serving at a royal ball, he catches the interest of the prince’s chief strategist. Now it is a question of dominance as he and his master struggle to find out who is the slave and who is the master.” 

Christmas Tree Verse by anniespinkhouse. 55k. “A strange lone werewolf finds its way to the home of the Wolf-Pass Pack but how can Alpha!Jensen save a starving and dangerous Were who wants nothing to do with his own kind? Jared finds salvation by the light of a Christmas Tree.“

Mine Verse by anniespinkhouse. 53k. This verse always tears me up inside. I come back to it and re-read every year. “In a world where humans are kept as slaves by their genetically superior Masters, slave!Jared awaits his fate in the gloom of a shop cage. Please heed warnings, this fic is not sunshine and flowers.”

Those are it for now, but I do recommend that you visit SPN Storyfinders for more, because there are TONS. Billysgirl does a great job at compiling mpreg fics, which are often quite angsty, so that’s another place to look as well. This is the first art piece I did for the @spnreversebang and I SO WISH  I had more time to do a few more pieces for the story after it was finished, but it just didn’t work out that way.

This story is WONDERFUL and inventive, I’m so happy with where the author took the story based on this mild piece of artwork!  Amazing  :)  

Bonus points to her for putting an easter egg in her fic to my fic Laying Low.  I giggled with delight when I read that!

I’ve been doing a lot of reading in the past couple of weeks. Like, A LOT. I go through times when I basically hide in books and fics. Just bury myself in them. So what the heck- might as well pass the savings along to you all. Heed the warnings on each fic- I’m not going to list them all here. 

Wincest:

Do Roses Know Their Thorns Can Hurt? by homo_pink. An AU loosely based on the Time Is On My Side episode. VERY Tim Burton-esque and beautiful. 

The Time Traveler’s Brother by gretazreta. This is an AU based on the book The Time Traveler’s Wife but it follows canon through season 5. It blew me away. I’m not kidding. 

Pick Myself Up Off The Ground by wetsammywinchester. So Paula just goes ahead and publishes this wonderful wincest big bang story without any warning. Can you believe that? The nerve. A simple “HEY CANDI- I’M ABOUT TO POST A PERFECT WINCEST STORY SO BRACE YOURSELF” would suffice. Seriously though, Paula is a great writer and this story is so good. I mean, two Sams and one Dean? YES PLEASE. 

J2:

Beginner’s Luck by bertee. This is a medieval adventure AU that’s so damn funny. Jared is a wannabe adventurer, Jensen is on the run. There are some tentacles involved, a couple of dragons, the usual. 

Fight the Rising Odds by bertee. More hilarious AU goodness. Jensen is the prettiest guy in Olympia and all the gods want him. Jared is his best friend and constant companion who helps him stave off the entitled douchebags. Seriously. Funny stuff. 

My Love is like to Ice, and I to Fire by _tiana_. Listen, I’m not that big into superhero AUs, but this was amazing. Jensen has the power of ice. Jared is all fire. I need this as a movie. NOW.

have you seen him whom my soul loves by veronamay. Have I recced this before? Possibly. I know I read it before but that didn’t stop me from tearing through the whole thing again. Priest!Jensen comes to town and meets Jared who’s supposed to be marrying Sandy. This is scorching hot. Just wow. I think my kindle melted. 

Time of Your Life by sandymg. Jensen thinks he doesn’t need anyone and he certainly doesn’t need love. Then he gets in an accident and starts seeing his former best friend and lover everywhere he goes. It’s hard to explain but it’s lovely. Just read it. 

Put the Heartbeat Back Inside by non_tiembo_mala. An AU based on The Bourne Identity. Jensen wakes up with no idea who he is. Jared is a university student who gets pulled into Jensen’s world. Have I mentioned I love AUs based on books and movies? Because I love AUs based on books and movies and this is a good one. 

The Dizzy Heights series by whispered_story. Jared is left on the Padalecki’s doorstep as a baby and has no idea he’s fae until Jensen shows up and announces that 1) they’re betrothed, and 2) they’re in danger. 

If you want a shorter, sexy story, try Ana’s non-AU fic based on this past year’s ACL. High for This.

Oh yeah and I don’t care much for mpreg but I devoured every single story by Fatebegins. The writing is so strong that I couldn’t stop reading them. I started with Above Us Only Sky and then just plowed through EVERY. SINGLE. FIC. Damn you, Lullys. You were right again.

I listed a few old J2 fic faves for a community I’m part of and figured I might as well share it here, too. Most of these are terribly well-known, fyi, since it’s a bit of a starter kit. :)

NON-AU:

Summary: Somewhere in the time between a handshake and a hug, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki went from being reel-life brothers to real-life best friends, and complete strangers to cosmic soul mates, no rhyme or reason to it that either of them could ever see.
