One reason the “I love you” “But do you like me?” scene in Ladybird always made me emotional is because I’ve had a similar conversation with my mom. I’ve always been a really anxious person, you know? I’ve always doubted and second guessed myself and tried to make myself smaller. And, for as long as Incan remember, whenever my mom would see me feeling nervous or sad, she would always turn to me and say “You know, I actually like you.” And it always sort of…bugged me, I guess? Because I never understood why she used the word like instead of love. Did she not love me? Was this her way of trying to tell me she was upset with me? This August, my mom was dropping me off at college for the first time, and I was so scared I thought I was going to throw up. And, right as I was getting ready to leave for my first day of orientation, she stopped me and she said, once again, “I like you.” And, after all these years, I finally figured I’d ask her what she meant. And she looked at and she said “Because I really do like you. And that’s more important than love. Every mother loves her daughter because she’s her daughter. But, even if you weren’t my daughter, even if you were a complete stranger, I’d still want you in my life.” And I think that’s what Greta Gerwig meant when she had Christine ask her mother “Do you like me?” Because Christine knows her mom loves her. Of course her mother loves her. But is that love out of obligation or out of fondness? Does her mother like the person Christine has become? Is Christine’s mother glad to have her in her life? And when the mother avoids answering the question implying that, no, she does not like her daughter, your heart sort of breaks. Because you know that nothing Christine does will ever make her mother truly understand her, despite how clearly and desperately Christine wants her mom’s approval.

it’s not the exact same but it’s a similar enough vibe to like, this is immediately what I thought of seeing images of Saorise Ronan in this movie and definitely similar enough that would probably make Marisa pause and maybe even be surprised at how much Lyra has seemed to aesthetically mimic her
an adult Lyra subconsciously mimicking her, half out of a saddened nostalgia for what once was, half out of her loneliness and remembering that for all her faults, her mother seemed to love her. this has me crying

This is by far my favorite scene of the film. The number one reason being that Charlotte is wearing Mary's sweater. 💜
