(especially since this au is kiiiiinda connected to another fanfic concept wip that I've been partially hyperfixating on lately alongside Arcane stuff ahdjlkahdlkas)

This is going to be pretty long since there's so much lore I packed into this fanfic au concept, so buckle up for one heck of an infodump.

Okay, so the Birdcage Cycle is actually one of many stories that were part of this larger fic-universe named Shattered Mirages, heavily focused on the SCP Foundation as a whole. (It was a massive project, and one of its storylines was going to connect to another fic-universe I thought up, but that's a whole story).

So, the Birdcage Cycle's main storyline focuses on these two:

So the two of them are both working in the SCP Foundation: specifically, in one of its facilities in Italy. Caterina 'Trina' is a researcher (specifically a Level 3 researcher), and Ottavia 'Tavi' is a field agent. They're also really close friends (or are they? what if perhaps they became,,, something more? *cough*repressedwlwfeelings*cough*)

It should also be noted that Ottavia 'Tavi' is hard of hearing, relying a lot on hearing aids and sign language. She also suffers from amnesia, having little to no recollection of her childhood and past -- all that she knows was that she ended up being raised by her aunt (who shares the last name as her), and that her childhood wasn't exactly the best. (one of the things she and Caterina bond over, aside from a shared interest in both the sciences and the arts.)

Now, back to the story:

So one day, both Caterina and Ottavia are assigned to two different cases. Caterina is assigned to a case involving anomalous incidents where deceased bodies that have been partially-calcified and altered have started to pop up more in certain locations. Ottavia is assigned to a case involving an anomalous piece of sheet music that, when performed by musicians, ends up leading to disastrous consequences.

However, the more these two try to investigate into these cases, the more they find themselves delving deeper and deeper into a tangled web of mysteries and connections -- one that might involve several other SCPS, a cycle of tragedy that goes back centuries, and most of all, one that might involve their pasts catching up to them.

So, I don't want to spoil a lot about this au concept wip, but here are some notable parts of it that I think are important to know:

Later on, Ottavia finds out that a cult might be involved in the cases involving the anomalous music piece -- a cult that might be tied to a childhood she can barely remember

Some of the SCPs involved in this au do end up being changed a bit, due to circumstances in this concept's past that end up changing their paths and all

So this girl here, is Katia Bertrand. She started out as my version of the POV character from the SCP Containment Breach game (which introduced me to the SCP universe), but as time went on and I got into newer SCP Foundation phases, her story changed a lot as I updated the lore, began to change bits of the au she was part of, and over time she became less of a main pov character and more of a character whose story began to connect to the plot's backstory, if that makes sense.

Yes, this is a hint to the SCPS involved in this specific au.

favourite eidolon from award winning podcast eidolon playtest and/or favourite creative use of powers on the show? and/or any fun eidolon concepts you've written? been getting into it on your recommendation and loving it : )

god thats a hard one. i'm not sure i can list just one: on powers alone, some of them would have to be three small words (i love the influence it had on charlie's character development, making her kind of neurotic about the things she said), mr. brightside (some scp type shit, so creepy and silly in a way that just makes it creepier), whenever you breathe out i breathe in (just a really neat and creative concept), and are you sure this is cool? (i love lethal joke powers as a trope)

of course, there's some eidolons i like for other reasons, but it feels unfair to pit, like, jake and balor, who are fully fledged interesting characters, against poprock eidolons who aren't portrayed that way.

in my home games i had a time travel plot center around a living mcguffin, a hapleses guy whose eidolon [The 1975] was just a physical portal to the year 1975. i find that one funny just because of how Stupid it was -- the most fun eidolon i've run a fight for is probably [Money Machine], an eidolon wielded by a billionaire miniboss that could turn any amount of liquid assets into something equivalent in price (particularly proud of the crash where she used it to hunt down the pcs with the military of montenegro) -- the party defeated her by trapping her in an endless forest in the Undertow where there was no concept of capitalism and her net worth was worthless. fun stuff

ya that's right!! Community game played my game ain't that crazy! Okay so here is all you need to know:

This is an AU where Whitty (now who's referred as Whitmore as his last name only) and Updike (Gabriel in this AU, he doesn't know his last name or anything since he was abandoned) switch places. ONLY they do in this AU, all others stay the same. Conrad Whitmore was raised by The Greater Good (similar concept to SCP) after being found in abandoned and crashed down lab as a doomsday experiment. TGG saw him as an useful tool Being fed well and trained since childhood, he's naturally taller and bigger than average Whitty. Also more tired. Just because Conrad had a good childhood doesn't mean he was free of trauma btw ☝ He had many experiments done on him such as vivisectomy, endoscopy and multiple blood tests and even organ removals, however he was often manipulated by TGG into doing this of free will, ever since as a kid.

For those who ask "well what about Carol? Does she still date the Whitty from this universe?" yes she did! Hex and Carol are/were still Conrad's closest people he has had in his life But Carol eventually broke up with Conrad once she learnt the true nature of his job. A big rift developes between them, with her trying to desperately convince him TGG is not the better solution it claims to be, while Conrad defends it with his life for is the only thing he knows. Their fights escalate a lot, until she visits him in his office. Needless to say it didn't go well.

I have an animatic as well! In a resume, their (verbal) fights gets him so agitated, he enters his ballistic stage where he hasn't felt that in years besides while a kid. And during his rage he pulls the trigger while Carol calls him names (monster being one). TGG covers the crime, the lyrics are important btw!

This all happened when Conrad was 21, Carol's death is tragic enough he enter a depressive episode + is taken back to his 'original bunker house' (where he was raised) by TGG for 5 years for reevaluation. Hex is the only one who knows what happened because Conrad told him. That's pretty much the lore? I think? UH anywasy tldr I became so attached to Conrad I've scrapped the 'swap' alternate reality of it and turned him into Whitty's twin brother (and Carol isn't dead there).

Also out of respect for Sock.Clip, Gabriel, or TGG no longer exists, I'm just dumping this here to be registered in my tumblr since it was the only social media I never uploaded the lore of my AU completely. But yes, swap whitty is fully dead, ofc ppl can make art for it duh, I just mean I won't be making content of it ever again, Conrad instead is being brought to the 'original' fnf world, and will be currently Whitty's twin, but his lore or story has been completely rebooted.

Comparing Control (the game) to TMAGP

So I finally got around to playing the video game Control after Alex mentioned having been inspired by it in the season 1 QnA. (I started the game years ago but my old computer refused to run it.) And I can definitely see some of the inspiration.

The Federal Bureau of Control is what the OIAR wishes it could be. Their job is to basically track down Altered Objects, Altered World Events and Objects of Power, research them, contain them and then put out an "official" story for the public to avoid any further panic. It's reminiscent of the SCP Foundation, and functionally it combines the purposes of both the Magnus Institute and the OIAR. The player is also given loads of lore on the paranormal events through a variety of media, including letters from concerned citizens, official reports, internal correspondence, recorded interviews, radio/TV programs and so on, which reminds me of the way TMAGP is formatted. I recommend you play it if you're interested in this kind of stuff and some action-oriented gameplay. It's actually super interesting, and I understand how it could fill up the creative tank, so to speak.

What really caught my interest was that I noticed a striking similarity between the explicit metaphysics of Control and the theories I've had for TMAGP. Like to the point where I'm doubting myself because surely the inspiration couldn't be that direct. Let me explain, and then you can be the judge (also some surface-level spoilers for Control).

Control metaphysics and how they relate

In Control, the AWEs seem to be largely caused by people's thoughts and beliefs. People's perceptions morph reality by creating archetypes in the collective unconscious, which then manifest into paranatural objects and events. The FBC uses fancy (pseudo-)scientific language like parapsychology and parakinesis, they talk about rituals and the collective unconscious and resonance and frequencies. They are concerned with Thresholds, which are places in the world where different dimensions leak into each other. The Bureau itself is an altered location (or a Place of Power), in which the architecture keeps shifting unexpectedly and which seems to work like a nexus that creates links to other altered locations, objects or phenomena. For example, you can find a light switch that doesn't connect to anything, but by pulling it three times (ie. performing a small ritual), you get transported to a motel that's kind of like every motel you've ever been at and also none of them. Just the amalgamation of the concepts people connect to motels.

If you've read any of my TMAGP theories, all of these ideas should at least vaguely ring a bell. Everything from the collective unconscious to people's thoughts being manifested in reality, the liminal spaces created by the amalgamation of those thoughts, and the mercurial locations where the dimensions bleed into each other. The difference being that I use archaic alchemy concepts for my points, while the game uses modernised language that at least tries to pass as scientific. Which, mind you, is not incompatible with alchemy either. For example, modern Rosicrucians still rely on alchemical language, but they often apply it more metaphorically to the modern (though equally pseudoscientific) concept of resonance and manifestation. I guess I'll very briefly break those ideas down too.

Resonance and alchemy

The metaphysics in Control revolve around vibrations and resonating frequencies. This is based on the real world belief that everything in the universe is vibrating at a certain frequency, and similar frequencies attract each other (known as the Law of Attraction by those who buy into it). The idea is that you can manifest things and outcomes into reality by aligning the frequency of your thoughts with whatever you want to manifest. Think of something real hard and it will come to you, be it good or bad.

This idea is not necessarily new, even if the language for it is (at least relatively speaking). Pythagoreans thought that there's a universal harmony created by the movements of celestial bodies, and it's reflected on our lives on Earth ("as above, so below"). This concept was equated with anima mundi or the world soul, and it's the same idea that alchemists later associated with either Aether or Mercury or both (depending on who you asked). Mercury is the shared life force on our earthly plane and it reflects the Aether that makes up the heavenly plane. Changes in one must be seen in the other ("as above, so below"). And we've come a full circle.

My take-away from this

I don't think Alex has directly stolen any ideas from the game, and while I can definitely see some inspiration, the feel of the two pieces of media are totally different. So I'm not drawing these comparisons to prove a point, I just thought it would be interesting to talk about them. But we're definitely dealing with classical alchemy concepts in TMAGP, and we've even been explicitly told that Fr3-d1's code utilises alchemy. I'd also be more worried about the conclusions I've been making if episode 40 didn't make this whole manifestation aspect abundantly clear and difficult to doubt.

But on the other hand, we do have some instances where music (ie. vibrations) is contributing to the paranormal. We've got the violin that produced aetherial, soul-healing music when fed with blood and drove the audience mad when not. We've got Bonzo's theme song, which seems to either summon Mr Bonzo or just follows him around. And most recently, we've got the nursery rhyme that is directly linked to Heinrich Unheimlich and possibly helped in his creation. So I'm not entirely discounting the possibility that we're dealing with vibrations/resonance in some capacity.

Conclusion

This became a pretty incoherent and rambly post, and I doubt many are interested to read about this topic in the first place. So if you made it this far, here's a bonus reason for playing Control: the altered objects are contained in a panopticon that's physically linked to an archive. (The archive is underwhelming but this set-up still tickled me.) Also there's a creepy janitor with a thick Finnish accent who sings Finnish iskelmä songs and loves using directly (and intentionally badly) translated Finnish idioms such as "blow up into pussy splinters" and I love him.
