Have you ever notice that there's this screenscrap from Nesting Dolls where Grissom is playing a card game(solitaire I think) ? It always bugged me that this card game on the table when Sara is telling Grissom about her parents. I now there is a time frame we don't see, cause the lighting indicates is later one the afternoon when they sit down to talk then it was when Grissom arrived. I don't know, I always felt that something was missing from that scene, like part of the dialogue was edited out or something.

so because there is a definite time jump in-between the scene where grissom first shows up at sara’s apartment and pushes her to talk about why she’s so angry and the scene where sara is sitting on the chair and grissom on the couch as she is telling him about her past, we know for sure that something had to happen in the interim.

there is certainly some lost dialogue there, in terms of sara agreeing to tell grissom the truth, prefacing her story, and telling the actual story itself (which, after all, we don’t even really get to hear, as by the time we come in again, she’s already talking about the fallout from her father’s murder as opposed to the main event).

exactly how much time passes—as you mention, when grissom first arrives at sara’s apartment, it appears to be sometime in the afternoon, and by the time she’s reached the end of her story, it’s nightfall, indicating that probably at least a few hours have gone by—and what all they talk about during that time is unknown to us.

does sara tell him her whole life story or just the more salient details? to what extent does he actively respond to her and ask questions? to what extent does he just listen? for how much of the conversation is she in tears? do they remain seated in the same positions that we find them in after the time jump takes place for the whole time that they are talking or do they at any points move around?

only fanfiction can say, really.

we honestly don’t know what happens during that “lost time.”

—and, frankly, the image in question does little to answer our questions to that end.

my thoughts on this scene/image are twofold:

we don't have enough context to really understand what's going on here.

since this scene didn't make it into the actual episode and wasn't even released as filmed bonus material, it's not technically canonical, so even though the card game is present in the scenes that are in the episode, its presence there doesn’t really tell us anything definitive.

not having access to any scripts for episode 05x13 "nesting dolls" and particularly not older working drafts, we lack context for what is happening in this scene.

if indeed it is even a “scene” at all, as opposed to a bts image of billy and jorja hanging out on set.

i’ve been around the csi fandom for a long time, and while there have been persistent rumors of a deleted scene from episode 05x13 “nesting dolls” wherein grissom hugs sara after she tells him her story, i’ve never yet seen any information about the nature of this card scene, let alone any actual dialogue from it or even descriptions of the dialogue.

based on the visual cues we can see in the full version of the image (that has sara in it), we can infer that it likely takes place in-between the time when, in the canonical episode, grissom tells sara he wants to know why she's so angry, and the next scene, after the time jump, where she is already in the process of revealing the story of her childhood to him.

but that's about where our ability to contextualize this image stops.

as we can see from the image, grissom appears to be speaking, so there is likely some missing dialogue taking place here.

however, what the subject and nature of that dialogue is, we can't say.

it's possible that at this point, sara has not yet begun to divulge her story, either because she is still resistant to unveiling her secrets or because she's working up to doing so or for some other reason unknown to us, and so grissom is trying to coax her into speaking.

it's also possible that she's already said some things and grissom is somehow responding to her.

maybe grissom is explaining himself and his motivations in coming to talk to her.

maybe he’s offering her reassurance that she’s not going to lose her job.

maybe he’s trying to put her at ease by doing a card trick.

maybe he’s making one of his weird grissom life’s metaphors.

honestly, we have no way to know.

we likewise have no way to know what to make of the card game itself.

while it could maybe be the case that if sara is refusing to talk, she and grissom have been sitting there long enough in uncomfortable silence that he has decided to entertain himself in the meanwhile and so snatched a pack of cards off of the shelf and started up a game of solitaire all on his own*, it could also be that sara already had a game of solitaire in progress when grissom showed up to her apartment, which he, having now sat down on the couch beside the game, has just noticed, and, much like he does with her chess pieces in episode 01x17 "face lift," has started to “help along.” 

* i personally consider this option or any options like it incredibly unlikely, for reasons i’ll discuss below.

alternately, maybe she started the card game after grissom’s arrival because she felt nervous and wanted to have some task to do with her hands in order to distract herself while she was telling grissom her story; however, once she actually got to talking, she walked away from it, and now grissom has taken her place and is finishing it, perhaps as part of some point that he’s making in response to something she’s already said.

we have no way to know. 

unfortunately, sara’s coffee table isn’t visible to us before grissom shows up to her apartment or at any point in their conversation prior to the time jump, so we can’t say if the cards were out before grissom arrived or not.

lacking any understanding of what’s going on in this scene, we can’t really draw conclusions on grissom’s behavior here.

while it’s certainly possible that he is being rude by focusing on solitaire while sara is unburdening her deepest secrets to him, i kind of doubt that that’s what’s actually going on, as, i think if that were the case, sara would refuse to talk.

after all, in the canonical parts of the episode, the only reason why she feels comfortable enough to tell him her story is because he’s proven to her that he’s interested in it and that he’s going to be careful with her when she’s vulnerable. 

if she had any sense that he was being inattentive to or blasé about his interactions with her, she never would feel safe enough to disclose to him; she’d just clam up.

that so, i’ve gotta believe that whatever is going on here isn’t that.

there must be more to the story.

if grissom is touching those cards, then either sara hasn’t really started to tell him about her past yet or he’s got some damn good reason for doing so—like he’s making some illustrative point with them or is doing something to put her at ease somehow.

there has to be some significance to what he’s doing, and the ultimate outcome of his actions has to be that sara ends up trusting him more, not less; she has to feel motivated to keep on divulging to him, or else we’d never end up at the place where we come in after the time jump, you know?

nevertheless.

whether it’s the case that in this scene grissom is being an ass distracting himself with solitaire while sara is sharing her deeply personal, deeply emotional, deeply traumatic story or else is doing something to prove a point to her or comfort her or disarm her or whatever, ultimately, it doesn’t matter.

—because, the thing is, the scene itself isn’t canon, both in the sense that it doesn’t appear in the actual episode and in the sense that, unlike, say, the deleted grillows scene from episode 08x12 “grissom’s divine comedy,” it doesn’t appear in an audio/video version in any published show materials otherwise, either, and there isn’t even a transcription of the dialogue available anywhere (as with the scripted version of grissom’s monologue from episode 04x12 “butterflied”).

though obviously it was filmed or at least photographed, this scene got excised from the mix long before episode 05x13 “nesting dolls” was finalized, and the production team never decided to release it in moving form as part of the season’s bonus materials subsequently.

all we have is this one still image, devoid of any context.

that so, for all intents and purposes, within the universe of the show, the events of this scene never happened or at least didn’t happen for certain.

so, yes, within the canonical episode, there are the remnants of a half-finished card game visible on sara’s coffee table as she is telling grissom her story, but because the events depicted in this image aren’t canonical, that means that said events are not necessarily (within the universe of the story) the explanation for how the card game came to be where it is.

in canon, grissom may have never even touched those cards.

they could be something sara was doing on her own before grissom showed up to her place.

maybe they’ve been there for a week already by the time he’s even on the couch. 

after all, lonely girl on suspension playing a card game built for one to soothe her nerves? it tracks.

anyway, all of this rambling is to say that while some kind of point b must have happened between point a (i.e., grissom showing up to sara’s place) and point c (i.e., sara breaking down in tears as she finishes telling grissom her story), that point b may or may not have anything to do with the events we see depicted in this image, at least from an inside-the-universe-of-the-show perspective.

like, it could be some kind of explanation, but it isn’t necessarily one and certainly isn’t a good one, you know?

there is a blank in the canon, and this image offers one potential option for what might fill that blank, but it isn’t really definitive, both because it’s noncanonical and because it is without any kind of context.

unfortunately, there is no “word of god” on those missing minutes or even hours between when grissom first confronts sara and when she finally completes her sad story.

the sequence of events could involve a card game.

however, it also might not, considering that this scene was essentially deleted out of existence before the episode ever made it to screen.

again, at this point, only fanfiction can really say now.

anyway, sorry i can’t give a more definitive answer.
