الأعز فرانسيس كوبولا،

حاولت الأسبوع الماضي أن أفعل مثلما كتبت، استيقظت مبكرا كما ذكرت، قبل استيقاظ أبي وأمي كي أتجنب جرح مشاعري وأكتب، لكن ما إن تحركت قليلا في البيت حتى أستيقظ الاثنان، كأنني طفلة ذات شهرين تستيقظ أمها معها فور استيقاظها، وبمجرد استيقاظهم كانت عملية جرح مشاعري في الصباح أمرا مفروغا منه، شيئا متوقعا وسيحدث بمجرد مرور الوقت.

في القاهرة وبعيدا عن البيت، حاولت مرة أخرى الاستيقاظ مبكرا قبل أي شخص للكتابة، لكن تولت القاهرة نفسها مسؤولية جرح مشاعري بمجرد استيقاظي، لم تحتاج القاهرة وجود أبي وأمي لتفعل ذلك، وفشلت مرة أخرى.

حاولت ثالث مرة، بعدما اكتشفت أنه بعد تمرين السباحة أكون أكثر نشاطا، استيقظ وابدأ التمرين وانتهي منه مبكرا قبل الجميع، قررت أنني سأشرع في الكتابة فورا بعد الانتهاء من التمرين.

مر التمرين على ما يرام مع الكابتن وهو لطيف جدا ويتفهم خوفي ويدفعني ببطء، لكن في نهاية التمرين قرر الكابتن أنه عليَ أن أحاول شيئا جديدا وأن تساعدني في ذلك زميلة أخرى تسبح بجانبي.

لم أحب صوتها وطريقة إسداءها النصح لي ومساعدتها، حاولتُ الحفاظ على نفسي ودفعها بعيدا ببطء لكنها كانت تريد مساعدتي بشدة وظنت أني محرجة من تعبها معي، وتمت عملية إيذاء مشاعري بنجاح في نهاية التمرين.

كانت متحمسة جدا، بينما نقوم بتغيير ملابسنا أخبرتني أنه بإمكاننا أن نرتب معا مرات قدومنا لتكون في نفس الوقت كي تتمكن من مساعدتي كل مرة، شكرتها وفي مخيلتي أن أبحث على يوتيوب How to swim for beginners فور هروبي.

صدقني لم أستسلم، وحاولت مرة أخرى.

بعد تمرين السباحة التالي في يوم آخر لم تكن الزميلة ��لسابقة موجودة فيه، ذهبت فور تغيير ملابسي لمقهى هادئ بجوار المنزل ومعي اللابتوب للكتابة، مرت ربع ساعة ثم أتى بالصدفة صديق تذكرت أنه أيضا يحب الجلوس في ذلك المقهى. بالطبع جلسنا معا، أخبرته أنه علي الكتابة لشيء ما، ظللنا نتحدث حتى فقدت كل طاقتي، تحدثنا عما مر به كل منا منذ آخر لقاء معا، بالطبع كان لزاما علينا التحدث عن كل المشاكل التي نمر بها في عيشتنا هذه الأيام وعن خططنا، بداية من انقطاع الكهرباء بالمنزل حتى ارتفاع أسعار رسوم دخول امتحانات المعادلات الأجنبية لكي نتمكن من السفر، ومرورا بميعاد تعويم الجنيه القادم المحتمل، بعد رحيله كنت قد أصبحت منهكة تماما عن كتابة أي شيء، فكرت في العودة للبيت لكني تذكرت أنه ميعاد قطع الكهرباء في بيتنا الآن فظللت في المقهى وأغلقت اللابتوب وقد دُمَِر يوم آخر بنجاح.

في اليوم التالي عقدت العزم واستيقظت مبكرا مرة أخرى وتوجهت مباشرة لمقهى آخر، تناولت كميات كافية من السكر والكافيين جعلتني متحمسة وسريعة، زاد اقتراب الديدلاين من سرعتي في الكتابة، كنت أسير بخطوات صغيرة لكن مستمرة. خلاص، أعرف أنني سأنتهي من كتابة صفحات ليست بالقليلة اليوم.

بعد ربع ساعة من الكتابة المتواصلة، فكرت أن السيناريو يحتمل كذلك أن يحتوي على خط سياسي كبير وهام، كويس، يمكنني كتابة ذلك في فقرة خطاب النوايا في ملف الفيلم. ريحت قليلا، ثم تذكرت مقطع فيديو شاهدته قريبا لعاطف الطيب -الذي لا أحبه للدرجة أساسا- يتحدث في لقاء له مع سلمى الشماع في كواليس تصوير فيلمه الحب فوق هضبة الهرم، تهاجم سلمى فيلمه الأول "الغيرة القاتلة"، فيحاول الدفاع عن الفيلم ويخبرها "أنا كنت قاصد أعمل فيلم بسيط مفهوش فلسفة زيادة عن اللزوم، أو أني أكشف نفسي من أول فيلم" -باعتباره كشف نفسه لاحقا في "سواق الأتوبيس"-، تسأله سلمى: "أن تعمل فيلم كويس ده يعتبر كشف ليك؟"، فيرد: "مش مسألة كشف.. أي حد جديد ممكن يعمل فيلم ينبئ أن ممكن يبقى له اتجاهات معينة.. تؤول تأويل مهوااش.. -يتلجلج- زي اللي بيحصل مع مخرجين كتير قبل كده.. زي الله يرحمه ممدوح شكري مثلا"، سرحت قليلا وفكرت في فيلم ممدوح شكري "زائر الفجر"، وأشياء أخرى عديدة مشابهة تداخلت معا واختنقت فجأة وبدأت أبكي.

where do you find these shooting script notes 👀

i reference them from myths.com, though i think they might have also been made available in one of those companions books at one point? but i just find these easiest. bear in mind that i think the host site i think was probably made around the time the show was airing, so it might look a bit shady, but i've never had any issues with pop-ups or viruses or anything.

but yeah, i love the shooting scripts. a lot of them are not that dissimilar from the episodes themselves - some dialogue alterations and some cuts here and there. i think the most significant changes are the flashback sequences in safe. i especially like them for the stage direction or insights into characters' thoughts that they provide.

no hte fandom is always right about otacon all of the time i do not have a gun to my head right now i am not reading a scritp

anyways yes absolutely. i think a lot of the fanbase genuinely dont understand the point of his character, ie breaking the cycle and Doing It Scared. of course, everyone gets their own thing from every character, but it seems they just focus on his characterization from the first game and really zone in on the anime fan aspect of it. show him as some kind of scared asocial teenage weeb. his inability to be outgoing and connect with people is an important part of him, it also happens to be the main thing he works on in the first game, and has made a huge step of progress by the end.

combine that with the general headcanoning of him as a trans man (nothing inherently wrong with that, just a group of people that are treated like actual babies) and pairing him with the characterization of snake being a genuinely sooo cool action hero who takes what he wants (damsel in distress) and youve got a cesspool of bad takes and horrible writing on ao3.

POTO adaptations analysis — Part 3 — The Phantom of the Paradise (1974), directed by Brian de Palma, starring Paul Willians, William Finley and Jessica Harper

this movie is a mix of Faust, The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture as a gothic/horror/comedy glamrock so you already know what to expect (and it was directed by Brian de Palma, the same dude who directed 1976's "Carrie")

Positive aspects (trying to not put the whole movie here):

– WHAT A FUCKING PHOTOGRAPHY, it barely looks like a 1970s movie fr

– WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK, no matter what genre plays during the movie it's so fucking iconic i love it 🥹

– Winslow Leach my beloved, aside from Erik Destler (Robert Englund) he's the best remade of original Erik we have, a little unhinged yet still pathetic and lovable

– Beef is ✨ICONIC✨ he SLAYS in gay 💅

– the figurine 🥹 omg what a fucking amazing techno-goth figurine

– the clips are so well made, the scene where Winslow rewrites his song for Phoenix while the red candle melts is probably my favorite

– Phoenix (our Christine/Marguerite) is so perfect and babygirl and girlboss iconic wonderful diva 💞

– AND, she and Winslow share the best platonic chemestry. I love them

– the mixt of tension, glamrock, comedy and tragedy are simpley perfect

– idk what's the meaning of this, but the characters are strangely related to birds: Swan, Phoenix and Winslow's mask

– speaking of mask, his design is PERFECT and it inspired Darth Vader's design (yes, Brian de Palma and George Lucas were friends and the POTP came out 2 years before Star Wars)

– as I said before, the movie mixes POTO, Faust and The Picture of Dorian Gray, in a perfect way ✨💅

– the movie also criticizes the music industry, with both Phoenix and other objectified women and the injustice that happens with Winslow Leach

– Swan is a hateful villain, but in a good way, he's also iconic and very well written (and acted)

– how the plot explores the paralels with Faust is so fantastic

– the scene where Winslow brings Phoenix to the rooftop looks like a reference to the 1925s POTO, where Erik as Red Death spies on Raoul and Christine

– Winslow's deformity is AWESOME

– the ending, tho tragic, gives Phoenix and Winslow the scene i wanted to see with Christine and Erik

Negative aspects:

– the scene where Winslow discovers the supernatural true about Swan and the deal he signed is kinda... convenient? Like, a hidden recording that explains the plot-twist? That's kinda of a scritp cheat

– i wish Phoenix had more scenes tho (she still slays)

This past year 2024 was fucking hell for my mental health but I'm feeling better right now and full of energy and little dreams I want to accomplish. But before starting to plan 2025, let me celebrate the stuff I did in 2024:

I started my webcomic DEMON HUNTER HAGAN! Hagan is everything to me rn so go and read it.

I went to three cons and sold my comics! First con was a disaster but I sold more than I normally do in the last two cons! And I could print two new comics with the money I earned from Kofi, one of them was Ellis, a very special comic to me.

I entered an art residency program that was awful but I met pretty cool people and did this cool comic about mental health. I'll be printing it pretty soon in Valencian but you can download it for free in English rn. There will be an exhibition of my works in a few months, I'll post photos.

I've been secretly (?) sketching a new comic, Belladonna Woods, a sweet queer fantasy story about mental health, and writing two scritps, the third arc of DEMON HUNTER HAGAN and a story that I have had on my mind for ten year already, WARRIORS OF THE STARS, a fantasy drama about psychological abuse.

I participated in three comic anthologies [x] [x] [x] and got commisioned a couple of illustrations for LOOP, the coolest videogame mag in my country. That was hella cool.

AND I LEARNT HOW TO SKATE! Now I cruise through the city non-stop rolling around at the speed of sound. Still a lot to learn and super excited about it!

And I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff but hey, I did lots of comics this year and that's always a good thing. Wait for more DEMON HUNTER HAGAN in 2025!

if active wants to make point & click games like (Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, Kings Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Thimbleweed Park, etc) theres Adventure Game Studio (AGS), some coding is reauired, but it comes with several dummy games to build off of and see how they click, but it is a bit harder than (non-scritping) RPG Maker or Ren'py.

The engine has a forum with a helpful userbase, so its easy to ask for help/look at others posts with similar questions, which helped me a lot

Yeah I getcha. I was once like you. Pure and naive. Great news. I AM STILL PURE AND NAIVE, GAME DEV IS FUN! But where to start?

It has a bunch of plugins and UI stuff and assets for you to buy! It can be used even if you have LITERALLY no programming experience! (You'll just need to read the doc a bunch) You can also port your game to a BUNCH of consoles! ✨Cons: None really <3 Some games to look at: Doki Doki Literature Club, Bad End Theater, Butterfly Soup

Twine: Great for text-based games! GREAT FOR WRITERS WHO DONT WANNA DRAW!!!!!!!!! (but you can draw if you want) ✨Pros: It's free! It's simple! It's versatile! It has great documentation! It can be used even if you have LITERALLY no programming experience! (You'll just need to read the doc a bunch) ✨Cons: You can add pictures, but it's a pain. Bitsy: Little topdown games! ✨Pros: It's free! It's simple! It's (somewhat) intuitive! It has great documentation! It can be used even if you have LITERALLY no programming experience! You can make everything in it, from text to sprites to code! Those games sure are small! ✨Cons: Those games sure are small. This is to make THE simplest game. Barely any animation for your sprites, can barely fit a line of text in there. But honestly, the restrictions are refreshing! Some games to look at: honestly I haven't played that many bitsy games because i am a fake gamer. The picture above is from Under A Star Called Sun though and that looks so pretty

RPGMaker: To make RPGs! LIKE ME!!!!! NOTE: I recommend getting the latest version if you can, but all have their pros and cons. You can get a better idea by looking at this post. ✨Pros: Literally everything you need to make an RPG. Has a tutorial inside the software itself that will teach you the basics. Pretty simple to understand, even if you have no coding experience! Also I made a post helping you out with RPGMaker right here! ✨Cons: Some stuff can be hard to figure out. Also, the latest version is expensive. Get it on sale! Some games to look at: Yume Nikki, Hylics, In Stars and Time (hehe. I made it)

engine.lol: collage worlds! it is relatively new so I don't know much about it, but it seems fascinating. picture is from Garden! NOTE: There's a bunch of smaller engines to find out there. Just yesterday I found out there's an Idle Game Maker made by the Cookie Clicker creator. Isn't life wonderful?

ENGINES I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AND THEY SEEM HARD BUT ALSO GIVE IT A TRY I GUESS!!!! :

Unity and Unreal: I don't know anything about those! That looks hard to learn! But indie devs use them! It seems expensive! Follow your dreams though! Don't ask me how!

GameMaker: Wuh I just don't know anything about it either! I just know it's now free if your game is non-commercial (aka, you're not selling it), and Undertale was made on it! It seems good! You probably need some coding experience though!!!

Godot: Man I know even less about this one. Heard good things though!

BUNCHA RANDOM ADVICE!!!!

-Make something small first! Try making simple: a character is in a room, and exits the room. The character can look around, decide to take an item with them, can leave, and maybe the door is locked and you have to find the key. Figuring out how to code something like that, whether it is as a fully text-based game or as an RPGMaker map, should be a good start to figure out how your software of choice works!

-After that, if you have an idea, try first to make the simplest version of that idea. For my timeloop RPG, my simplest version was two rooms: first room you can walk in, second room with the King, where a cutscene automatically plays and the battle starts, you immediately die, and loop back to the first room, with the text from this point on reflecting this change. I think I also added a loop counter. This helped me figure out the most important thing: Can This Game Be Made? After that, the rest is just fun stuff. So if you want to make a dating sim, try and figure out how to add choices, and how to have affection points go up and down depending on your choices! If you want to make a platformer, figure out how to make your character move and jump and how to create a simple level! If you just want to make a kinetic visual novel with no choices, figure out how to add text, and how to add portraits! You'll be surprised at how powerful you'll feel after having figured even those simple things out.

-If you have a programming problem or just get confused, never underestimate the power of asking Google! You most likely won't be the only person asking this question, and you will learn some useful tips! If you are powerful enough, you can even… Ask people??? On forums??? Not me though.

-Yeah I know you probably want to make Your Big Idea RIGHT NOW but please. Make a smaller prototype first. You need to get that experience. Trust me.

-If you are not a womanthing of many skills like me, you might realize you need help. Maybe you need an artist, or a programmer. So! Game jams on itch.io are a great way to get to work and meet other game devs that have different strengths! Or ask around! Maybe your artist friend secretly always wanted to draw for a game. Ask! Collaborate! Have fun!!!
