Moodboard for theme thursday!!
Crabeater seal facts! -
1. They dont actually eat crabs, they mainly eat krill and have weirdly shaped teeth to help them filter krill from the water. (Warning they are very strange and might freak you out a bit :3 )
2. They grow to an average length of 7.5ft and weigh around 200kg (although females are slightly heavier and longer)
3. They are considered the most sociable of the seals in the antarctic, with examples of groups of up to 1000 although they become much more solitary as they age, hunting alone or in small groups of 3 or 4
4. They are the most common seal in the world (with some estimates as high as there being 75 million seals)
5. Their main natural predators are leopard seals and orcas - although orcas tend to go for other seals (paticulary weddell seals) as crabeaters are difficult to hunt
