-Mitigating Bycatch- Shark populations are under threat due to commercial fishing. Longline fishing is a fishing technique where a line is baited and hooked for hundreds of miles usually targeting a few specific species of fish. Even though certain species are targeted, shark bycatch usually tops any targeted species caught (Molina and Cook, 2012). Bycatch is usually thrown over from the boat whether live, dead, or injured. Finding the true impacts of longline fishing are hard due to poor reports in fishery records (Baker and Schluessel, 2005). Sharks can also go through trauma due to the stress of the capture, and this contributes to their (generally) low survival rate after release (Gallagher et al., 2014). The good news is conservationists and scientists are working with fishermen to try to reduce the amount of bycatch by implementing new longline fishing techniques. These include circle hooks, which reducing internal injury and should cut down on the mortality rate post-release. As a someone who surfs in Florida I’ve watched large sharks swim past my board. I’ve seen them explode out of the water and catch a fish where I was just wading. I’ve literally looked in the face of a wave and a small black tip was within arms length of kids wading in the water and they never even knew it. I’ve had what I consider a “healthy fear” borderline fascination of sharks my whole life but as I’ve grown up I’ve realized it’s completely irrational. I’ve been waiting to watch this for months. As sad and just absolutely depressing as it is to watch humans exploit a species that has survived 5 major extinctions, it is more important to understand something like this before we decimate our oceans. Contrary to popular belief most of our oxygen comes from the ocean. The more unhealthy the ocean, the more unhealthy the planet. You’d be a fool not to see that we are at a tipping point. As the human population increases, we lose hundreds of thousands of species around the globe. This was the most evident to me a few years back when @craigsuede and I tried to free dive with sharks in #Bali and #gillitrawangan it’s impossible to find them but you’re guaranteed to find one thing trash. Beer bottles, cups, styrofoam, plastic bags... in every beautiful place we explored. I’m posting about this as someone who intends to be a father within the next couple of years and a contributor to not just humanity but this planet. Our generations will decide the fate of many species on this planet including our own. I think like life on this earth it starts with the oceans and saving our apex predators. Rob says in the documentary that he started with anger towards humans for doing this to the oceans but it turned into optimism after seeing what people can do. I agree.
