The team's spacecraft descended through the thick, swirling mist that enveloped the planet. As they broke through the clouds, the team could see the surface below—an expanse of rugged terrain marked by jagged peaks and uneven plains. The sky above them was perpetually bathed in ribbons of vibrant colors that danced across the horizon, illuminating the mist in hues of green, blue, and purple. The landing was smooth, with the spacecraft's landing gear absorbing the impact as it touched down on a relatively flat area between two rocky outcrops. The ship's engines powered down, leaving only the hum of onboard systems and the distant, ambient sounds of the planet. As they emerged from the spacecraft, the constant aurora above provided a surreal, ambient light that guided their way. The ground beneath their feet was rough and uneven, forcing them to move carefully as they began their exploration. Zerath led the way, his helmet's sensors scanning the environment and feeding data back to his display. Velana, Zyri, and Jorlan moved methodically, occasionally stopping to collect samples of the glowing flora or to take atmospheric readings. As they moved deeper into the mist-covered terrain, Zerath's sensor beeped, drawing his attention to an unexpected reading. He stopped abruptly, raising a hand to signal the others. The team halted, turning to face him. Zerath examined the readings on his tactical pad, his brow furrowing in concentration. "There's something fifty meters to the north," he continued. "It's large." Jorlan immediately adjusted his own sensors to focus on the direction indicated. "It's...moving. I don't think--," A sudden, intense vibration resonated around them, causing a few loose rocks nestled within the wall to fall and shatter around them. A shadow fell over them, cast by a massive, descending figure. They looked up just in time to see a majestic yet terrifying creature descending from the heavens. It had the body of a dragon, covered in shimmering, iridescent feathers that glowed with a deep purple hue. Its wings were enormous, each feather catching the light of the aurora above, creating a dazzling display of colors. Long, curved horns extended from its head, adding to its intimidating appearance. The creature let out a deafening roar, a sound that reverberated through the mist and echoed off the rocky cliffs before it lunged towards the team with astonishing speed. "Run!" Zerath shouted as he raised his weapon and began firing shots at the creature, aiming for its wings. The energy bolts struck the creature, but instead of wounding it, they only seemed to infuriate it. The creature pushed forward and swiped at the eldest Sixonian with one of its clawed forelimbs. The swipe nearly tore Zerath's arm from his body, forcing him to stagger back. His suit's artificial intelligence immediately began warning him of significant blood loss, but the seasoned lieutenant gritted his teeth and kept firing, trying to buy time for the others. "Fall back to the ship!" Zerath commanded, his voice steady despite the pain. The others fired a few meager shots from their pistols before turning and sprinting back towards their spacecraft, the creature's roars echoing behind them. Velana and Zyri ran side by side, their breaths coming in sharp gasps as they navigated the treacherous terrain. Jorlan was close behind, his mind racing with thoughts of what the creature could be and how they might defend against it. The creature roared again, its wings beating furiously as it gave chase. As they reached the ship, the airlock doors hissed open, and they rushed inside, the safety of the spacecraft mere steps away. Zerath was the last to enter, clutching his injured arm but still ready to defend his team. Inside the ship, the doors sealed shut and the team took a moment to catch their breath. It was then that they realized something was horribly wrong. Jorlan wasn't there.

It’s one things when some tween with green hair parrots TRA talking points to show what a good ally they are but for a Professor of Anthropology of all things to say that their are no differences in the skeletons of men and women is extremely disturbing. So glad the students laughed.
An interaction at a TPUSA event between female collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines and University of Pittsburg professor Gabby Yearwood went viral earlier this week when Gaines made the simple claim that there are anatomical differences between men and women.
“If you were to dig up two humans a hundred years from now, both man and woman, could you tell the difference strictly off of bones?”
“No!” University of Pittsburg anthropology professor immediately responded.
The audience erupted into laughter.
Tumblr media
Once the audience erupted into laughter, the professor quickly defended his esteemed credentials, assuring everyone that he was the “expert in the room.”
“I’m just saying, I’ve got over 150 years of data, I’m just curious as to why I’m being laughed at,” Professor Yearwood said.
The TPUSA event, which took place at the University of Pittsburg, faced heavy backlash from students on campus. The event title was, “Saving Women’s Sports” and centered around the danger of allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports.
Since being blindsided by her university’s unilateral decision to allow a transgender “woman,” Lia Thomas, into the female locker room (though he possessed all of the anatomical features of a male) and onto the woman’s team, Gaines has spoken out regarding the threat transgenderism poses to women’s sports. Gaines is now a fierce advocate for equality in female sports after finishing her final season having tied with Thomas at the NCAA Championships.
If any interaction perfectly displays the blatant propaganda that has infected college campuses, it is this one between a female athlete, Gaines, and a blindly obedient follower of progressive doctrine, Yearwood. Radical transgender ideology has corrupted academia so much that college professors are now denying basic scientific truths to justify the whims of gender theory.
After being mocked for this absurdity, Yearwood tries to use his experience and education as a rationalization for his claims. But students in the audience do not need a Ph.D. to know how factually incorrect his outlandish statement was.
The skeletal differences between men and women have been easily observed by medical professionals for quite some time. The main difference is in the pelvic bones. Women will have a broader sciatic notch and a raised auricular surface, while men have a narrower sciatic notch and a flat auricular surface. This is because women’s skeletal structures have different features for child-rearing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, this is just one anatomical difference between men and women. Any honest anthropologist will tell you that there are several physical differences among the two sexes. If archaeologists were to dig up a body that was hundreds of years old, they would be able to tell with essentially 100 percent certainty whether that person was a man or woman based on their bone structure and DNA sampling.
No matter what cosmetic surgeries are performed to make a person appear to be the opposite gender, they will always be the sex that their biological features indicate. Whims cannot dictate scientific reality.

Regarding those Edwin doodles, why was he beaten up? Who was talking to him? 👀 Also, moomoo Edwin is so cute >:3c 💕💕💕
context
Oh, it was no one in particular (Maybe a rival gang member if I were to specify…? Probably not his former creative partner Thea though. She’s not that violent haha..) (I haven’t thought of details of Thea and Edwin’s backstory in a long time now, and surface personality traits are hard to pin down without a backstory.)
The joke was that in the first scenario he was painting and in the second he was in pain because of the meme (?) that there’s “pain” in “painting” haha (I don’t believe painting/drawing has to inherently be a painful process though, or that only painful emotions make good art)
Also I wanted to draw him beaten up (either it was just for fun or I was maybe frustrated? Probably just for fun though.) I like drawing characters looking up defiantly even as they’re beaten up✨
moo moo Edwin hahaha— Thank you! I’ve heard that cows can be fluffy…
Come to think of it, I dunno what animal motif he’d have if he were to have one.
A cheerful artist… with some sort of identity confusion due to winter depression (old 2019 concept. Looking back, the severity doesn’t seem to match my knowledge of winter depression)(if he’s ashamed, does he feel it so deeply that he voluntarily uses a slightly different name, uses a mask to cover his face, AND grows out his hair & dyes it, all for the sake of… having his orange look be the happy/cheerful/friendly one?) (If he hides himself in plain sight, if he can’t accept this as part of himself, this can lead to some troublesome identity issues…)(unrelated to gender)
-
“I’m Edwin! Nice to meet you too!” —Edwin, usually in spring/summer
“Hey, just call me Devin for now. No, it’s not because I want to change my name or anything. It’s, uhh… an… alias…? Haha…” — Devin, on the outside probably, in winter
“What is this ‘Devin’ name to me? Am I even allowed to feel this way as myself? God, but what am I supposed to do? I can’t just tell people that it comes every winter and gets better in spring.” —Edwin, on the inside probably
-
(…I almost want to compare him to “Childe” Tartaglia Ajax simply for his multiple names/identity thing but uhh, that guy’s on a whole different level. Venti/Barbatos? Hmm but to my knowledge nothing particularly bad happened to Edwin.)
What would be an animal that emphases this duality I wonder… An animal that looks friendly and colourful but isn’t what it seems…
…poison dart frog???

Devin. he/him, 20. black triangle frame piercing (left ear). left-handed (still). Edwin winter an Alia’s & disguise. wears mask not for physical health (in his opinion). seasonal affective disorder: winter depression. tried to hide his symptoms but isn’t good at it. ashamed of his winter depression. wants to separate his depressed self from his usual self. arrow points to him, saying autumn/winter.

Garden Report & Frugal Living 24.04.12
Today we managed to get a bucket of sand from the beach before the weekend rains appear. Also planted in pots some old seeds, really crammed them in thickly because I am so late and not sure if they will even germ . Note to self: harvest dates are important especially if you have a tendency like me to over purchase/horde seeds/trade seeds. And make sure they are sealed well! I spilled a great deal of Peshawar poppies because inner glaceing bag was haphazard and another bag of some sort of bean was in open plastic (is that mold or inoculation?). I planted out the beans thickly in a glow box not wanting to take up space for about 75 bean plants. If they come up it will indeed be a pleasant surprise! and even more if the voracious creatures stay off! So here is what is planted:
Peshawar poppies
calendula
early cabbages (hope they won't bolt)
purple broccoli (hoping for cooler grow season so no bolt)
yellow mangels/beets
pole beans
spring onions
guava seed (saved seeds, idk but I am guessing they may be pineapple guava from fruit we receive every year)
giant prague celeriac (giant celery root)
white pickle cucumber
tiger toms (red paste toms with green stripes)
flat leaf parsely
basil (genovese/sweet style)
I have some black polish radish that is suppose to be sweeter than the spainish variety but those I need to direct sow.
The ants are still in grow box #2. I thought I had gotten them out last year but no such luck. I will need to find some terro boxlettes.
The purple asparagus has quickly sent up a spear. No sign of any others. I collected seeds off of it last year and I really should plant but I'm not sure I can commit to the slowness of it (about 8 weeks to germinate!).
There is so much I want to plant this year but I need a major clean and if I get settlement, there may be enough for roof but the tear off will generate a huge amount of waste and even with tarps down, many things will probably die due to impact and workers' boots so definitely can not do guerrilla gardening along the flower beds and shrubbery.
Currently foraging lilac blossoms. I dry them and place in jars for tea.
The quince is just loaded with blossoms! I have never seen this many flowers! We love quince so hoping for good pollination and much fruit. The red fleshed apple is starting to bloom as is the pears -- yes, the little asian pear may pull through! The raspberries are also starting to bloom. The pots I propagated last year need to find homes or be planted. I need to pull weeds from the white currant transplants. This is the year I need to transplant my little persimmons I grew from seed if they survived. They make a long tap root first so its essential to find a good spot -- no moving them around!!
Once again, too slow on the pruning! The birds are setting up housekeeping. The collared doves once again are trying to nest in the garden. I'm hoping that the neighbors will mellow out. They are becoming more aware of the songbirds that frequent my thicket (there really is a method to my madness... for some things).
Frugal tip: do you knit or crochet? do you want to learn but don't want to commit to a large project? got an old t-shirt? with a pair of cloth scissors, cut your t-shirt into a continuations ribbon about the width of your little finger or half that width. Roll your t-shirt 'ribbon in a ball. From the thrift store or if you have a crafters borrowering library get like maybe number 6-8mm knit needles/ crochet hook. Most craft stores also have economy priced needles/hooks if you want to invest and learn. You can knit/crochet a 'sample' sqare and use it as a wash cloth for your dishes. You can do this trying out new stitches as well with cotton yarns (look in thrift stores, rummage sales and craft discount sales). This way you are learning a new skill, recycling a spent object and hopefully being enthused and having fun. It might even become a hobby!
So my friends, get outside! Grow a garden, get a hobby and grow yourself in the process!

Suptober 21 Oct.: Haunted
After taking the tiniest possible nibble of his own cookie, Cas asked, under his breath, "Have you checked with the…you know?"
Dean's expression dimmed. "Oh. Right. Well, no time like the present."
deancas first kiss
"You could eat a cookie, right?" Dean asked, and didn't wait for an answer before turning back to the woman behind the candy counter and saying, "We'll take two of the monster ones."
Cas kept perusing the other shelves in the shop. He was not overly well informed about candy – he'd never had much reason to be, even in the last few years  – and was astonished at how many types came in bizarre packaging, like test tubes or miniature treasure chests or tins the shape of horror movie villain's heads. (Dean had already decided to buy one shaped like a demented clown doll to torment Sam with.) Jack loved nougats and anything else chewy; Cas wondered if he'd like something called salt water taffy. It apparently came in many "unique and seasonal flavors," including candy corn and vampire fang.
Cas had tried candy corn before. Vampire fang would have to be an improvement.
"Would you like to pick out the cookies you want?" the woman asked Dean.
He shook his head. "Nope, whichever ones you give us are fine."
"I'll get you two with lips then," the woman said, which struck Cas as a credibly psychotic thing to say.
He was still unprepared for the cookie Dean handed him with glee: it was round and frog green, with a face made from buggy candy eyes and a neon pink puckered candy mouth.
Cas struggled to find an appropriate response. "Thank you?"
"You are welcome." Dean put his whole cookie into his mouth and ate it in one bite.
After taking the tiniest possible nibble of his own cookie, Cas asked, under his breath, "Have you checked with the…you know?"
Dean's expression dimmed. "Oh. Right. Well, no time like the present."
He pulled Cas into a tight corner by a case displaying a large selection of squishy and colorful brains, worms, and spiders, and took one of his smaller EMF meters out of his inner jacket pocket. Cas looked back at the counter. Neither of the shop employees were paying attention to them. Dean waved the meter around, somewhat desultorily. It remained silent.
Dean looked only somewhat disappointed, to Cas's surprise. "Ah well."
Cas raised an eyebrow. "In the news article, the owner said she usually saw the ghost in the kitchen." Dean nodded. "We're not in the kitchen," Cas prompted.
"Okay," Dean said, like he'd been talked into something.
Cas went over to the cash register to pay for the cookies, tin, and an apple decorated with chocolate that looked like a mummy's wrappings. Dean edged up beside him and gave the counter woman a wide smile. It struck Cas as a particularly unconvincing smile; Dean's eyes seemed flat. But Dean was, of course, still handsome, and Cas had witnessed plenty of women be completely besotted by one of his smiles under almost any circumstance.
This woman was no exception. "Yes?"
"The signs say you make thirty-five flavors of taffy, but I only see a dozen out here," Dean said.
She lit up. "The others are in the back. Would you like to sample something specific?"
"You make everything in-house back there?" Dean deflected, pointing over her shoulder to the large open kitchen that took up the rest of the store.
"We do. Come back and see." She walked away and Dean followed.
Cas occupied himself with the offerings near the cash register, biting down against something itchy at the back of his throat. The woman and Dean returned quickly.
"You know me, I love banana," Dean said in a rushed way, to nobody in particular. He added a handful of taffies to Cas's pile and the cashier counted them before putting them in a white paper sack.
Dean swept past Cas again, eyes averted.
The cashier said, "That'll be $10.28." When Cas handed her a twenty dollar bill, she counted out his change and handed it across the counter. "You guys live here long?"
It was the sort of friendly, small town question Cas was used to being asked, even if he wasn't sure why it was a thing people asked. "A few years," he said.
"It's a great town to raise a family in," the woman said, sincere like she knew something about him.
Well, maybe she did; she wasn't wrong, anyway.
"It is," Cas agreed, thinking of Jack and Sam and Eileen back at the bunker playing a tabletop game involving trolls from planet Zoobubble. He also thought of Dean.
He made himself smile goodbye at the cashier. He took his sack of sugar and joined Dean by the door. Dean had an odd look in his eyes – warm, but maybe unsure.
They left and began the half mile walk back to the bunker.
"So," Cas said after a few minutes. They came to a rest beneath a large oak that was going gold at the tips of its leaves, with a thousand glossy brown acorns scattered around its roots. "No ghosts in there after all."
"Nah." Dean kicked around a few especially crunchy leaves.
"If it makes the current owner happy to believe the old owner is still overseeing taffy production, I don't believe it hurts anyone." Cas took in Dean's nervous posture. "Dean."
"Yeah." Dean looked up and saw Cas looking back; his expression softened.
"You didn't really think the store was haunted, did you." Cas tipped his head. "You just wanted some candy?"
"Yep," Dean said, and Cas was immediately struck by one thought: Dean was not telling the whole truth. A small, harmless lie.
Something warm tickled its way into Cas's hands. He put the sack on the ground at his feet.
"Dean," Cas said, looking up at him. "Are you ever going to kiss me?"
Dean's pupils dilated instantly, leaving much less green in his eyes. "I…" He swallowed. "Would you like me to?"
Cas nodded, leaning toward him.
It was good, he thought, that he didn't technically need to breathe, because Dean was suddenly kissing him like they were both drowning. He pushed Cas against the tree trunk and Cas held onto him for dear life, Dean's mouth as hot and sweet as a whole store's worth of confections.
When Dean finally eased back, Cas chased his mouth to give him a softer kiss.
"I like going on walks with you," he said. "But you don't have to have a whole pretense to be alone with me. Or to kiss me. If that helps anything."
Dean closed his eyes for a short laugh and put his forehead against Cas's shoulder. He raised his head again and gave Cas an equally soft kiss. "Good to know," he said, a beautiful flush rising across the tops of his cheeks.
He pressed nearer, shivering when Cas's fingertips grazed the small of his back beneath his flannel shirt. A brisk little breeze whipped around the sheltering tree and the two people holding each other beneath it. They finished walking back to the bunker hand in hand. Eventually.

Professional exterior house paint service near you
Exterior House Paint: How to Choose the Right Color and Finish
Your home's exterior is one of the most important aspects of its curb appeal. A fresh coat of paint can make your home look its best, but with so many different colors and finishes to choose from, it can be tough to know where to start.
In this post, we'll discuss the factors you need to consider when choosing exterior house paint, as well as some tips for finding the perfect color and finish for your home.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Exterior House Paint
There are a few key factors you need to consider when choosing exterior house paint service near you:
The climate in your area. If you live in an area with hot, sunny weather, you'll need a paint that can withstand the elements. Look for a paint that is labeled as "weather-resistant" or "sun-resistant."
The type of siding on your home. Different types of siding require different types of paint. For example, if you have vinyl siding, you'll need a paint that is specifically designed for vinyl.
The amount of sunlight your home gets. If your home gets a lot of sunlight, you'll need a paint that can resist fading. Look for a paint that is labeled as "UV-resistant."
Your personal style. Of course, you also want to choose a paint color that you love. Consider the overall style of your home and choose a color that complements the other elements.
Tips for Finding the Perfect Color
Once you've considered the factors above, you can start to narrow down your choices for exterior house paint color. Here are a few tips for finding the perfect color:
Look at the surrounding homes. What colors are popular in your neighborhood? If you want your home to blend in, choose a color that is similar to the other homes in your area.
Consider the time of year. If you live in a climate with distinct seasons, you'll want to choose a color that will look good all year round. For example, a light blue color might look great in the summer, but it might be too bright in the winter.
Think about the style of your home. If you have a traditional home, you'll want to choose a classic color like white, black, or navy blue. If you have a more modern home, you might want to choose a bolder color like red, yellow, or green.
Get samples. The best way to see how a color will look on your home is to get samples. Most paint stores will give you free samples so you can try out different colors before you make a decision.
Finishes
In addition to color, you also need to choose a finish for your exterior house paint. There are three main types of finishes:
Flat. Flat paint has a matte finish that is very low-luster. It is the most affordable type of finish, but it is also the least durable.
Satin. Satin paint has a slight sheen that is more reflective than flat paint. It is a good compromise between durability and affordability.
Gloss. Gloss paint has a high sheen that is very reflective. It is the most durable type of finish, but it is also the most expensive.
Choosing a Paint Contractor
If you're not comfortable painting your home yourself, you can hire a professional paint contractor. When choosing a contractor, be sure to get quotes from several different companies. You should also ask about the contractor's experience painting exteriors and the type of paint they use.
Exterior House Print Services near Me
If you're looking for an exterior house print service near you, there are a few things you can do to find one. First, you can ask your friends, family, or neighbors for recommendations. You can also search online for "exterior house print services near me." Once you've found a few companies, be sure to read their reviews before you make a decision.
Conclusion
Choosing the right exterior house paint can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. By considering the factors above and following our tips, you can find the perfect color and finish for your home.

Paging Healer Malfoy // Chapter Three - How To Save A Life (D.M.)
A/N: CHAPTER THREE! This is a loaded chapter. We see a lot of Draco’s centre as a Healer through this; we see just how his job affects him. So there’s a lot in this. This, so far, is my favourite chapter and I know I say that about everything I write, but I am so ridiculously happy with how this has turned out. So please, if you read, like/reblog/comment - let me know what you think whether it’s just a keyboard smash or a whole essay, I eat that stuff for breakfast, dinner, tea.
Summary: A promise Draco made to himself when he first became a Healer is broken - smashed to pieces in front of him, and he doesn't think he can fix it.
Warnings: angst, death, grief, a large time skip - looking at months, arguments, feelings, crying.
Word count: 4.3k
Prologue// Chapter One// Chapter Two
Tumblr media
January gets off to an interesting start. It always does when Draco works the New Year’s shift; drunk witches and wizards entering the emergency room with alcohol poisoning or injuries they have no recollection of getting. (Y/N) had covered Christmas Day so he could spend it with his family, as per demanded by Narcissa, but he had covered Boxing Day and New Year’s to repay for that favour. He doesn’t mind it either; he would rather be working than sitting in his empty flat with nothing but his insomnia to keep him company.
Draco has always liked January; the idea of new beginnings sits with him, offering him the opportunity to start again from scratch and build himself up.
His New Year’s Resolution for this year is for him to finally be honest with (Y/N) about his feelings.
-------
January always brings with it the coldest weather despite the knowledge that spring is just around the corner. It brings with it red noses, warm scarves, and dragon’s breath.
He stands with Vera at the admit desk; going through their latest stock intake and what they would need to order more of if the flu season should continue well into February.
“Is that my favourite Healer?” A feminine voice sings out from behind them.
Draco spins around; a smile already crossing his face, “Violet! What are you doing here? Is isn’t a dialysis day?”
She shakes her head; holding up the pager she has carried with her since she was nineteen years of age, “I was sitting down to breakfast and this went off.”
Draco’s eyes grow wide, “It went off?”
Violet nods rapidly, “It went off, so I pushed my breakfast away, grabbed my suitcase and rang Jonathan from the tube.”
Draco claps his hands together in delight, “That’s great news. Did they say you were to get prepped down here?”
She nods, “A Dean Thomas rang me as I was on my way here. Told me to get the initial tests done here and then he’ll come fetch me when the kidney has arrived.”
Draco makes his way around the desk; holding out a hand for her to shake, “I’m so happy for you, Violet.”
“Thank you, Draco.”
He leads Violet into an empty exam room; making sure that there would be no-one to bother her as she waits for the green light to be taken upstairs.
“How are you feeling?” Draco asks quietly; calculating Violet’s blood pressure.
Violet releases a long sigh of relief, “Happy. Scared. Relieved. Nervous.”
Draco laughs, “That’s a lot for one person to be feeling.”
She smiles; eyes shining with unshed tears, “We’ve just been waiting for so long.”
And she has. Draco had treated her all those years ago when she was rushed in by her then-boyfriend Jonathan. Violet had been feeling ill for over a month; it had started with shortness of breath, and then she started losing weight but retaining water in her ankles and feet leaving them swollen as well as complaining about blood in her urine.
Having had enough, Jonathan rushed her to St. Mungo’s where Draco saw her and diagnosed her with kidney failure. She hadn’t even known she had kidney disease; feeling well enough to continue her active lifestyle and her work as a teacher.
From there, Draco had placed her on the transplant list – desperate for a match for a nineteen year old who still had her whole life to live. She hadn’t been out of Hogwarts a year; still very much a Ravenclaw through and through. After that, Draco had her assigned to dialysis which was where he saw her so often that a friendship struck up between him, her and Jonathan.
Draco finishes his examination of Violet; sending off samples of her blood to the lab to be checked for anything he hadn’t picked up. He smiles down at her, “I think you’re getting a new kidney today.”
The smile that breaks out across Violet’s face is blinding; pure happiness personified as if the very sun was sitting in this very exam room.
“Have you told Jonathan?”
Violet nods; her curls bouncing with the movement of her head, “He’s on his way. I think he’s more excited than I am.”
Draco laughs, “I can believe it. Alright, I’ll let you get settled whilst I go ring surgery and see how long it’s going to take.”
Violet smiles, and Draco briefly wonders whether her cheeks already hurt from the happiness shown on her face. “I’ll be back to see you soon,” He says as goodbye; heading straight for the nearest phone to pester Dean Thomas.
(Y/N) joins him at the admit desk a short while after Draco has left Violet.
“Will Dean be coming down to get her himself?,” A pause, “Thank you, Shirley,” Draco answers, putting down the phone.
“I see Violet is finally getting her transplant.”
Draco smiles; eyes flashing towards Violet in exam room four, “She’s been on the waiting list for over three years.”
“You’re happy for her?”
“I was the one to diagnose the kidney failure. She has been through numerous false alarms; the false hope of getting a kidney to find out its been donated elsewhere. I have sat with her through her dialysis when her fiancée couldn’t make it because of work. Yes, you could say I am happy for her.”
“You seem to have struck up quite a friendship,” She comments lightly; reading over an old chart.
Draco rolls his eyes, “It’s hard not when I see her so often and I’m her primary physician.”
(Y/N) sighs; not missing the undercurrent of warning in Draco’s tone, “Well I wish her all the best.”
---------
Dean Thomas had trained with Draco, but rather than continuing in the emergency room, Dean had chosen to go into surgery. He had done well for himself; he had quickly risen through the ranks on the surgical floor, having a knack for putting people back together again.
Arriving in the emergency room, Dean greets Draco with a large smile and a handshake, “It’s been too long, Malfoy. When are you next coming out with the lads?”
Draco laughs, “When Weasley can admit he can’t handle his firewhisky.”
“So never then?”
Both men laugh. Thinking back to the same night where Ron had gotten so drunk on the stuff that he performed his and Hermione’s song outside their window at nearing three in the morning. Other than disturbing the nightlife of urban London, Ron had woken up a very sleep-deprived Hermione.
Dean shakes his head; still chuckling, “How’s our patient?”
Draco smiles, “Brilliant. The perfect candidate; all her tests came back with no signs of trouble.”
Dean rubs his hands together, “That’s what I like to hear. Where is she?”
“Exam room four. I’ll take you there now.”
In the time that Draco has made his phone calls and seen other patients, Violet’s fiancée, Jonathan has arrived with a bouquet of pale pink roses, it seems. He stands upon the entrance of Dean and Draco but does not let his hand leave Violet’s. He smiles at both of them, “Draco, Healer Thomas – this is it, huh?”
Dean nods; smiling, “This is it,” He looks towards Violet, “How are we feeling? Are you ready?”
Violet nods once; firm, decided, “I’m ready.”
-----
Dean helps the porters move Violet to the surgical floor; Jonathan following with his bouquet of pale pink roses, whispering words of luck quietly. It’s a touching sight to see; the love they feel for each other written so clearly over their faces.
Draco knows (Y/N) joins him to watch them take Violet up; it’s hard to ignore her presence, the usual scent of lilies and citrus wafting over him, sending his heart racing.
“She’ll be okay, Draco,” (Y/N) murmurs; her eyes on the couple waiting to get into the lift.
Draco nods; turning to face (Y/N), “I know she will.”
(Y/N) reaches out to poke his cheek, “Then look like you believe it.”
Draco catches her finger with his hand; holding onto it for a minute, “I do believe it.”
Something passes over (Y/N)’s face that Draco can’t define; he drops her finger, clearing his throat at the strange atmosphere that has settled over them. “How busy are you today?” He asks, in the hopes of dispelling the awkward fog between them.
(Y/N) shakes her head as if coming out of a trance, “Not overly. Four patients so far and a capable trainee not demanding my attention every minute. Why do you ask?”
Draco shrugs, “Wanted to see if you would be free for lunch in an hour or two.”
(Y/N) smiles, “I’ll make time for you, Draco.”
Draco places a hand on his heart, “Then I should be so grateful as to buy the lunch.”
(Y/N) grins wickedly, “If you’re paying then I’m definitely making time.”
Draco gasps and (Y/N) starts to laugh in earnest; covering her mouth as she snorts. She shakes her head, laughing fit subsiding, “Let me know when you’re free and we’ll grab some food.”
He smiles at her, “Sounds like a plan.”
(Y/N) touches his shoulder, her fingers lingering, before leaving; needing to see patients and catch up on charts as well as keeping an eye on her trainee. A simple touch and it sends Draco’s heart rate through the roof; such a gentle touch but one that felt like it held so much promise. It had lingered slightly, and Draco wondered whether that was how lovers touched each other when saying goodbye. Either way, he so desperately wanted to know. He thinks back to his New Year’s Resolution; beginning to think that just maybe it’s time to tell the truth.
Draco shakes his head at the plan starting to form in his head; of questions and answers, of dimly lit restaurants and kisses against front doors. With a yearning filled sigh, he goes in search of a trainee, needing a distraction from his wandering mind.
Jude Prewett had proved herself highly independent within her first week of working in the emergency room; having hailed from a long line of Healers, she understood the role she played, but also lived with a huge weight on her shoulders in trying to fill shoes that had been worn so many times before.
Draco finds her with a patient; gathering their history before asking any further questions for their visiting St. Mungo’s today.
She startles slightly at his presence in the room, but soon settles quickly. “What do we have, Healer Prewett?”
“Jonah Ashford, 67 years old. He complains of shortness of breath upon initial examination.”
Draco nods; happy so far, “What have you gathered from his history?”
Jude raises an eyebrow, but nevertheless, continues, “Mr. Ashford has a history of asthma along with brief spells of dizziness that come on suddenly. These spells tend to last fifteen minutes each time and come and go when they please.”
Draco leans against the wall; happy to let Jude continue, “What are you thinking first?”
“He isn’t having an asthma attack though he does need a refill of his medication which I will give him a prescription for. I am concerned about the dizziness and how often it comes on.”
Draco looks towards the patient, “When was your last dizzy spell, Mr. Ashford?”
Mr. Ashford frowns; thinking back, “Last night.”
Draco nods, “Are you getting enough to eat and drink?”
Mr. Ashford looks down, “I try, but I find it hard to remember. My wife, Lacey, used to cook and clean. I lost her last year, and it’s been hard to find a routine when everything reminds me of her.”
Both Draco and Jude nod understandingly; both sad at Mr. Ashford’s story though it’s something they see often. Widows who simply desire company; who can no longer sit in their empty houses and watch time tick by.
“Have you got this?” Draco asks Jude. She nods; eyebrows furrowed as if to say she had this before he interrupted.
“Excuse me, Mr. Ashford,” Draco hears Jude say, “I won’t be a moment.”
Draco pauses outside the exam room; letting Jude catch-up to him. “Healer Malfoy?” She asks.
“Yes, Jude?”
“Is it just me you’re checking in on?” Jude asks; concern lacing her voice.
Draco shakes his head with a smile, “I check in on everyone. I’m checking on Healer Shannon after this. Don’t worry, Jude. You’re doing well.”
Jude relaxes and smiles; relief now evident in her tone, “Alright. Thanks, Healer Malfoy.”
Draco laughs, “It’s fine, Jude. Go,” He nods towards Mr. Ashford, “Continue with your patient.”
Making his rounds of the floor, Draco is relieved to see that the trainees are more than content to work with supervision from their assigned attendings. No complaints from either parties which makes Draco’s life a little easier when it comes to the reviews in just a couple of weeks.
He starts to collect patients to keep his mind off ringing the surgical floor immediately. He rings once, and they update him – Violet has just gone in, it looks to be going to fine, and then he makes himself wait to ring again.
“Draco,” Her voice sings; pulling him from his daydreaming as he sits at the admit desk.
He checks his watch, then checks the clock hung on the wall, “Is it that time already?”
(Y/N) nods; a large smile on her face, “And I do believe you said you would pay.”
He pats his pocket, checking for his wallet, “I do believe I said that. Come on then, let’s go eat.”
She hooks her arm through his. Draco has to resist the urge to pull her in further; to kiss her senseless. “I’m fancying chips, what about you?” She asks; ripping him from his yearning.
He shrugs, “I’ll have to have a look when we get there.”
She frowns, “Are you still worried?”
Draco shakes his head, “No. I’m not,” Then he smiles, “But I am hungry, so hurry your butt up, will you?”
(Y/N) snorts but fastens her pace, nonetheless.
--------
After the third time, Draco rang the surgical floor, they refused to accept any calls from him. Instead, ghosting his calls in order to annoy him further. Draco hadn’t worried; not through lunch with (Y/N) and not as he continues to see patients.
Draco can’t help but continue to glance at the clock; it has been well over the allotted time to complete a kidney transplant. Worry now settles deep within Draco’s gut, but he tries to remain positive as he flits about the emergency room; taking on as many cases as possible in order to keep the worry at bay.
It’s when he sees Dean get off the lift that Draco has any idea what’s happened. Dean looks tired and beaten down; as if all the fight has left him through the last few hours. With a nod of his head, Dean gestures to an empty exam room for Draco to join him in.
Taking a deep breath, Draco steels himself for what he’s about to hear. He knew Dean’s tactics from training and from seeing him work on the surgical floor; he would never let anyone else deliver the news of a patient to friends and family.
From the expression on Dean’s face, it doesn’t look to be good news, “Draco, I’m sorry.”
Draco nods; sadness settling like a boulder in his gut, “What happened?”
Dean looks reluctant to say, but he sighs and replies, “Cardiac arrest two hours in. We tried for half an hour to bring her back.”
All his life, Draco had seen signs that witches and wizards were not immortal – he had survived a devastating war; he worked in a profession where death stalked the halls like a hunter finding its prey. And yet, he had hope for Violet. He had hope that the transplant would be a success and she would go on to live a long and healthier life with her fiancée.
In the span of a single surgery; the hope had been crushed by the skeletal hands of the reaper that wanders the halls of the hospital, collecting souls.
Dean claps Draco on the shoulder in what is supposed to be an offer of comfort, but it does little to quash the growing sense of loss Draco feels.
“If you need anything,” Dean starts in kindness before giving up and saying, “I knew you two had a friendship.”
Draco nods silently; watching Dean had for the stairs. Throughout his career, Draco had never let himself get close to a patient. Sure, there were those who he saw regularly. The frequent flyers, the pain potion seekers, Mrs Larkin – a widow who needed company more than she needed medical treatment. However, Violet came in so frequently for dialysis that it felt almost inevitable they would end up on friendly terms.
Draco rubs a hand down his face; feeling almost devastated at this loss of such a young life.
Needing to be alone – if only for a moment – Draco enters the break room, taking calming breaths. He feels ridiculous; letting a patient’s death affect him this much when he had been at the deathbed for so many – young, old, infant.
He’s so caught up in his emotions, he doesn’t hear the door open. Draco startles slightly at the sound of her voice calling his name.
“I heard what happened,” She murmurs comfortingly – her hand outstretched as if to offer support.
Draco clears his throat; dislodging the lump that has taken root there, “Yes. It’s a sad loss.”
“Are you okay though? I know that you two were close.”
Draco looks down to the chart in his hands; a patient still needing to be seen. He smiles humourlessly, “It’s always sad to lose a patient, no matter how long you’ve been doing this.”
(Y/N) frowns, “That isn’t what I meant, and you know it.”
Draco throws his arms wide; emotions bubbling to the surface, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
She throws her hands up in surrender. Her voice is laced with frustration as she answers, “Fine. Keep it bottled up.”
(Y/N) slams the door as she leaves the break room; making her anger known. Draco, for a brief moment, loses his temper, sending his fist into the door of his locker. It does a little to curb the wave of grief submerging him, but the wave doesn’t ebb. Draco rests his head against the cool, gunmetal grey door of his locker, taking in deep breaths.
He gives himself a minute.
One minute. That’s all he gets to feel it all; to let the loss consume him. To feel the guilt and the sadness.
The minute passes and Draco stands straight. He pushes his hair back from his face and straightens his lab coat.
Clearing his throat, Draco leaves the break room, needing to continue working.
-------
It’s hard to miss the pitying look from the nurses as Draco continues to work; as if the entire floor has decided to walk on eggshells around him.
He continues to work because he needs to; he has no grounds to leave work – it wasn’t a family member he had lost; it was a patient. That was how he was rationalising it in his head. It was just that Violet had been his patient for three years; seeing her so frequently.
Draco shakes his head; ridding himself of the dark thoughts that threaten to break through.
He continues to work because that’s who he is. Through Draco’s adolescence, he found himself being defined by what others thought of him and his family. He was bending to a self-fulfilling prophecy that he didn’t want thrust upon him.
Through his first week as a trainee Healer, Draco found himself redefining every aspect of himself. He did not have to present the hard, touch exterior that his family and fellow students expected of him at Hogwarts. Rather, Draco found himself to be someone who could be soft; who could laugh and joke with the best of them. He found himself to be someone who wanted to help people in their time of need; in their most vulnerable state when all they need is someone to trust and someone to listen.
As he takes on more and more patients, it’s because he needs to work. He has to work through this; he doesn’t often show how death affects him so, but on some level, he had known Violet. He just didn’t expect her death so soon.
Focusing intently on the charts in his hand, Draco blinks away the tears threatening to fall. With a deep breath and a fake smile, he enters exam room two, ready to meet another patient.
--------
Violet’s fiancée, Jonathan, approaches him a few hours after her death. His face is tear stained and puffy as he clears his throat to gain Draco’s attention from a conversation with Nurse Janice.
“Jonathan,” Draco greets, “I’m sorry for your loss.”
Jonathan nods wordlessly; blinking fast to get ready of the already building tears. He clears his throat again, “I just,” He takes a deep breath, “I just came down to thank you.”
“For what?” Draco asks; confused.
Jonathan lets his tears fall, saying, “For sitting with her when the dialysis was draining her, and for helping her laugh. For keeping her company when I couldn’t be there because of work.”
A lump forms in Draco’s throat, “That isn’t something you have to thank me for.”
Jonathan shrugs, “Regardless, thank you.” He turns to walk away but he pauses at the last minute, “Would you come to the memorial? I know it’s a lot to ask, but I think it would mean to a lot to her family if they met you.”
Draco nods; not even second-guessing his answer, “Of course. Let me know the details and I’ll get it off work.”
Jonathan nods; his face puffier than before from the freshly fallen tears. He holds his hand up in a wave before leaving St. Mungo’s.
-----
How Draco makes his way home is beyond him. He works the rest of his shift in a stupor; the all too familiar heaviness of grief settling over him for which he feels foolish and ridiculous.
He doesn’t feel the rain that soaks him through to the bone. He doesn’t remember entering his flat; doesn’t remember shedding his coat, letting his bag fall to the floor. Sitting on the couch, Draco submits to the grief. He submits to overwhelming sense of loss battering his walls; demanding to be felt.
On the inside, Draco is a storm; raging, raging, raging.
On the outside, he’s as calm as anything, staring at the mantle piece as he lets himself finally feel.
---------
Draco’s building was one of the many converted mills in London; brown bricked and grand, it stood proudly on its street, wearing its history like a badge of honour. His flat is on the fifth floor; one of the largest in the building – a gift from his parents after completing his training with high honours. He had lived there ever since, and (Y/N) had visited often over the years of their friendship.
(Y/N) knocks three times, calling his name with each one before she tries the door.
Entering his flat, (Y/N) always takes a moment to admire the pictures that line the wall. Admiring the beauty of Draco’s mother, and almost flinching at the imposing figure his father presents.
This time, however, she marches straight past them, calling Draco’s name for him not to reply.  She only knew to come over here when he hadn’t met her to catch the tube together like they usually did when their shifts coincided. The words she flung at him earlier, she hadn’t meant. They had settled in her bones with an uncomfortable feeling; leaving a sour taste in her mouth. Truthfully, she had been worried about Draco since the news of Violet’s death had made its way to her ears; the gossip chain of the emergency room never one to falter.
She finds Draco on his couch; still wearing the clothes he left work in. Dropping her bag and shrugging off her coat, (Y/N) takes a seat next to Draco on the couch. He barely registers her presence; barely even blinking at the change of weight. She tries not to let it hurt her, but it does. Seeing him like this… it was something she hadn’t ever seen before.
Draco always presented himself as collected. The most dishevelled he ever got was whenever he worked nights and for most of the week, he would sport stubble. However, that was always gone by the time he came back onto day.
This was something new, though. His grief wasn’t anything she had encountered, and though they spoke often and told each other they cared for one another, they had never truly spoken about the feelings between them.
She coaxes his head onto her shoulder, and it’s there that Draco lets the first of his tears fall and the first of his sobs escape his chest.
He has seen death. He’s courted it for years – through the war, through his job. He has had patients die om him and had mourned each of their deaths, but he had never felt loss this keenly before. He felt scrubbed raw from the inside out.
He doesn’t know how long he cries for; he doesn’t know how long she holds him for but somewhere in between in it all, he manages to choke out his thanks which she hurriedly hushes. Her response being to hold onto him tighter.
Time passes, and his sobs start to slow, but they do not let go of the other, needing their anchors more than anything in this moment. In the pain of it all, Draco finds solace in sleep.

Balsam Fir // Abies Balsamea
Economically and ecologically important, Balsam Fir is a keystone species of the eastern North American boreal zone. -Vermont Center for Ecostudies
Family: Pinaceae (pine)
Abies from the Latin “rising one” and Balsamea producing a fragrant gum or resin [1]
“Fir” comes from a proto-Germanic word referring to fir or pine trees [x]
Other common names include: eastern fir, Canadian balsam, and blister fir. [2]
Description:
“A steeple-shaped evergreen tree with [flat] needles 3/8” - 1 1/2” long and whitened beneath...cones are 1” - 3” long, upright and fleshy, purplish to green [when fresh]. Bark rather smooth with resin blisters. Height 40’-60’; diameter 1’-2’” - Eastern Trees, Peterson Field Guides, George A. Petrides and Jane Wehr
Distinguishing features that I personally use to identify Balsam Fir is its pointy pyramid shape, flat needles that don’t roll between fingers, and the resin blisters that cover the bark.
Habitat:
The soils on which balsam fir grows range from silt loams developed from lake deposits to stony loams derived from glacial till. Fir will grow, but comparatively slowly, on gravelly sands and in peat bogs. It grows on soils of pH ranging from 4.0 to 6.0. It is generally found in areas with a cold moist climate and with 30 inches or more of annual precipitation [3]
Balsam fir is widely distributed in northeastern North America. It occurs from Newfoundland west across northern Quebec, northern Ontario, central Manitoba, and Saskatchewan to northwestern Alberta... southeast to northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and east to New England... scattered populations occur in southern Minnesota, southern Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and northern Virginia. [2]
The only native Fir to the Northern Piedmont and a major component of the landscape both as a key to the Spruce-Fir-Northern Hardwood Forest formations and as major commercial crop in local agriculture (for christmas trees). It’s cone shape helps shed heavy snow load “like Vermont’s steep-pitched roofs” and it’s heavy resin content in its needles prevents cell walls from freezing. [4]
Ecosystem:
Balsam fir is a major food of moose during winter... Spruce and ruffed grouse feed on balsam fir needles, tips, and buds... Red squirrels feed on balsam fir male flower buds. Stands attacked by the spruce budworm attract numerous insect-eating birds, especially warblers and woodpeckers... Balsam fir provides important winter cover for white-tailed deer and moose. During summer, deer, bear, and moose often rest under the shade of balsam fir trees. Young balsam firs provide cover for small mammals and birds. Martens, hares, songbirds, and even deer hide from predators in balsam fir thickets. Grouse and songbirds seek shelter during winter within the evergreen foliage. In Maine, fishers often nest in witches brooms in balsam fir trees [2]
Balsam fir is a mostly early and mid successional, but is late successional or climax species in the mountains. Balsam fir seedlings are shade tolerant and can establish underneath a canopy of hard wood and other conifers and they can grow to be 200 years old [maximum]. Locally they form communities with Red Spruce and are accompanied by other trees in the Northern Hardwood Forest. Common understory plants include bunch berry and mayflower and balsams are often hosts to many lichens. [4]
Harvesting:
Resin, needles, and wood are collected from Balsam Fir
Oleo-resin is harvested (using a tool called a picoué) by cutting into blisters best in Jul-Aug [5] but I also like to do this in the winter and early spring when there is not much else to forage for. Dryer resin drips, found on the outter bark or cones, are best collected when temps are well below freezing and even then handled with care (very sticky). [a good video]
A coniferous forest on a warm summer day smells intensely evergreen, a signal essential oils production is high and would make for a good time to harvest needles as well. I have also heard it is good to harvest evergreen needles in early spring when photosynthesis starts back up and sap is flowing. But they also can be harvested in winter time for a late season tea (though perhaps not as potent)
Wood is usually harvested when trees are dormant.
Chemical constituents:
Vitamin C, beta-pinene, delta-3-carene, alpha-pinene, bornyl acetate, α-terpineol, piperitone, and thymol are found in the needles [x], a similar profile is derived from the resinous bark but also includes limonene, beta-phellandrene, camphene [X], and cis-abienol is a major component of its aromatic resin [5].
Actions:
The Penobscot applied resin as an analgesic antiseptic for burns, sores, bruises, and wounds. Iroquois used leaf tea for colds, coughs, and asthma. The Chippewa inhed fumes from resin on hot coals to treat headache. [5]
(balsam fir) Kokokha8wk: A tea made from the leaves is used for coughs, colds and fevers. The tea can also be used as a scalp wash for dandruff. The leaves are harvested in the spring and dried. The resin is an antiseptic and healing agent and is used for frostbite. - From Ethno-Botany of the Abenaki and other Northeast Tribes Compiled by Brian Chenevert
Antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, laxative, expectorant, vulnerary
Affinity for the respiratory system, skin, immune system
Energetics:
The presence of delta-3-carene is a good indicator that balsam is drying. Balsam is also stimulating, it helps activate and get things moving.
Safety/Cautions
Generally safe, no found contraindications, resin may cause skin irritation [5] heavy resin content may put stress on kidneys [x], pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid or consult a physician. As always medicinal information is for educational purposes, consult a doctor or clinical herbalist before using plants for treatment of illness.
History:
Because it is only native to North America, Balsam Fir has a well established history with the indigenous peoples some of which is noted above.
Locally I’m interested to learn more about how Balsam Fir has shaped the Northeast Kindom. It is logged for pulp wood and light construction, but more so commercially farmed for Christmas trees so it has a role to play in the local economy and agriculture and I’m sure it played a big role in the reforestation of Vermont after the 1800s.
A historic fun fact that also might come in handy (for doing natural crafts) is the resin was used as a transparent cement and to fix samples and slides for the microscope.

Aromatic Use:
Thoreau wrote that the young shoots of the balsam fir, Abies balsamea, when picked and kept in a pocket for a few days emit the fragrance of strawberries “only it is somewhat more aromatic and spicy” [1]
Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. (Pinaceae). balsam fir. Unspecified parts of this species were burned as incense in Iceland (Bjornnson 1475). In parts of North America, Native Americans threw the needles on hot coals in their sweat baths and inhaled the fumes to relieve coughs and colds (Krochmal and Krochmal 1973). The gum from the tree was used in churches in Paris as frankincense (Lescar- bot 1609). From The Uses and Abuses of Plant Derived Smoke by Kayri Havens, Lara Jefferson, and Marcello Pennacchio
Paine’s products in Maine has been making balsam incense since 1931 and is featured in this article The Best Incense Sticks Are From an 85-Year-Old Company in Maine. Balsam fir pillows are also a common staple in country stores here in Northern New England, and is most popular in the area for trees, wreaths, and kissing balls to bring coniferous aromas inside during the holidays.
Recipes:
Fir needle makes a great tea. Combined with dried orange peel, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, ginger, and peppercorns for a spiced chai. Using folk methods of preparation: the needle and resin can be made into an oxymel or infused in honey, tinctured, or infused into oil for salves and soap. Definitely for incense and aromatic applications, most recently it was included in an incense dedicated to winter’s longest night and I am working on an all fir formula. I also make balsam sachets for clothing drawers and under pillows. It can be used in culinary endeavours, I have a good recipe for balsam fir and cranberry cookies. It can be used as a substitute for (white) pine which is often found in recipes as it is more wide spread.
Virtues:
Fir whose twigs and needles are burned as a protection from lightning during storms. The fresh branches are of especial merit as switches for scouring the ghost-ridden, or beating the evil out of a haunted place. Its resin... serves as a peerless fume for the removal of intruding ghosts... Abies balsamea,... is an Evergreen of northern latitudes, long valued for its fragrant contribution to the magical fume. Its principal magical virtues are purification, healing, and resonating the Genii of the Forest, though its more specialised formulae may render fumes which give rise to trance states... In the Work of the Hedge, the Fir stands as a charm against nightmares and nocturnal intrusion by hanging fresh branches hung over the bed. Similarly, a branch hung over the barn door keeps noxious spirits from stealing grain. -from Viridarium Umbris by Daniel Schulke
[most of this is also reiterated in Myths and Legends of Flowers, Trees, and Plants by Charles M Skinner]
One of the things that bothers me with the entry above is the lack of context, (where who why etc), which is an often occurrence with gathering such info. I’m assuming its use as a preventive against nightmares and thieving spirits is an act of sympathetic magic, (I’m also assuming some of this lore is specifically about Abies Alba balsam fir’s European counterpart. but as for balsamea...) as the resin bisters on its bark act as a trap against predators or perhaps it is a lure, dooming noxious spirits to count its many little leaves. Im unsure of the history or lore of its use to protect agaisnt lightning storms but in my personal practice evergreens are used to help bring rain [x]. It’s use in healing and purification is a little more obvious.
Personally I find balsam most pertinent in working with the genii loci. Balsam fir just embodies so much of the local landscape it’s hard not to encounter. There are the hedge keeping balsams the grow bushy and protect the forest boundary and there are balsams of the inner woods that grow tall resinous trunks. The perfume of its resin is favored by local land spirits. I find it specially tied to the varying hare. Balsam has a wonderful seasonal duality of being a beacon of life and warmth during winter, but one who harbors a cool relief to summer heat. But it is during winter that Fir receives the most adoration.
Botanical astrology is a subject I am still relatively new to (but very intrigued by) so my understanding of this might evolve. Agrippa gives rulership of pine trees to Saturn, and balsam fir (in the same family) has some saturnine traits as tree that grows in harsh conditions, a gymnosperm the oldest kind of seed producing plants, evergreen in immortality. In Culpepper’s Complete Herbal, he gives Fir trees to Jupiter, though is referring to a different species but with similar qualities. Looking to its medicinal application I can see how it may balance a phlemegtic temperament. More specifically when looking to clear the lungs I might consider Gemini, when concocting unguents for the skin: Capricorn, and Pisces when looking to stimulate the immune system. As an incense I am personally drawn to work with balsam in Lunar formulas especially when focusing on local materials. It is not a cooling sedating plant in action, but as an aromatic it I find it to be more aligned with the Moon. According to Agrippa “leaves of all vegetables” are appropriate in Lunar suffumigations, perhaps balsam needle would fall into that category. But I am more interested in its resin. Hiding behind round swolllen blisters, the oleoresin is very “watery” and is clear (to yellow tinged), even the slightly hardened resin is whiteish and moon like. Of the local (mostly conifer) resins it is the most true to the cool camphoraceous conifer scent that evokes the Moon, even when burned. These formulas often seek to enhance the trance iducing qualities of the burning resin and are to accompany dreaming, divination or to welcome Lunar influences. The Moon often rises over a particulary favored patch of balsam which was another draw and personal connection. I’m also interested to experiment and see if the Moon (phase or sign) has any effect on resin production for harvesting.

The Show Must Go On! - A Youtuber AU you didn’t want and didn’t need
Hisoka Morrow, italian Makeup Youtuber, enjoys his life in the comfort and occasional drama of his profession. But nothing brings more drama into his life than the eldest son of the Zoldyck fashion magazine empire.
Meanwhile, aspiring australian Twitch Streamer Gon Freecs forms a special bond to a Speedrunner commonly going by "Kil".
Chapter 1
FF.net link - AO3 link
Beep Beep. beep Beep. Click
8:00 am. Hisoka rolled over in his queen-sized bed, groaning at the interruption of his beauty sleep. Setting an early alarm after editing until 2 am was a horrible idea.
He grabbed his phone from his nightstand and rolls onto his back, following his ritual of checking all his notifications in the morning. The video he had uploaded after editing was well received, many comments about how he should try more looks with purple eyeshadow. About 3 years ago he had started his channel “Bubblegumbitch Makeup” as more of a throwaway joke after someone insulted his makeup on Instagram. However, an audience grew quite quickly, and Hisoka had to admit that he enjoyed the attention and luxury of it all. Making money by sitting in front of a camera and applying Makeup while people tell you how good looking you are is a great ego boost.
Half-heartedly he scrolled through his subscription feed, just to see what his competition was up to, though barely anyone had really uploaded during the night. Amateurs and their 'healthy' sleep schedules. A true influencer knows that an audience never sleeps.
He disregarded his phone somewhere into the pile of pillows that make up his bed and made his way into the bathroom. His morning showers are more functional than enjoyable, quickly rinsing on whatever spirits of sleep may linger on him.
After that, the Makeup artist applied his usual morning creams, body lotion, towel dries his hair, and threw on a pair of grey low-waist sweats and a comfortable white razor-back shirt. Need. Coffee.
Hisokas flat was a quaint little thing just outside of Rieti. An open imitation marble kitchen, facing the living room equipped with a black leather couch and wall mounted flat screen TV, opening to a relatively small balcony housing a few plants.
Exiting his bedroom, he grabbed the TV remote and switched unto a random morning news show, just needing background noise while he waits for his coffee to brew.
"And preparations are running wild for the annual Fashion Week in Rome. This year the line-up features many new promising designers from all over the globe. Tune in at 10 for more-"
The fashion week! Hisoka grinned, having nearly forgotten about this important event that he had always followed closely. Though rarely attending himself, he had been requested on multiple occasions as a make-up artist for certain models. But there was something more important connected to that special week. He grabbed his fresh cappuccino and strolled back to his room, fishing his phone from the depths of pillow mountain.
"Hisoka: Gooooood Morning! Roma's Fashion Week is coming up, are you going to stop on by? ~"
It didn’t take long before his phone chimed with the familiar Ping of a private Message.
“Bellissimo <3: I will be going to the Show for 4 days. If it proves convenient, I’d drop by for a short collaboration.”
“Hisoka: I’ll be keeping my bed warm~♥️”
“Bellissimo<3: Gross and unnecessary. I will book a room in my usual hotel in Rome. I’ll drop by for the Collaboration on Monday afternoon, and leave after.”
“Bellissimo<3: I will send you some sample pieces later, please come up with a look for one of them, and don’t just ‘wing it’ like last time.”
Hisoka giggled before disregarding his phone again. Illumi Zoldyck, breakthrough Fashion Designer from England, and eldest son of Zoldyck fashion magazine empire, who often uploaded videos of his artistic process on his channel “I. Zoldyck Fashion”. They had met 2 years ago, at a smaller Paris fashion show, the first one Hisoka ever attended. A model had requested Hisoka as her makeup artist, while Illumi had been working on a dress for her, and the two of them ended up working closely together to properly coordinate colours with each other. And though Illumi expressed great annoyance with Hisoka, they exchanged numbers, and started to make collab videos whenever they fell into the same place. Something about working together with Illumi got Hisokas heart racing. Seeing the camera-shy man get increasingly more frustrated with his antics was a joy that could hardly be topped.
But he didn’t have time to dwell in good memories and spine-tingling anticipation. He had work to do. And so once again he chucked his phone back into the pillow-cave system and made his way into his recording room.
It was a small office space, on one side an office Desk with a Desktop Computer, a couple of small succulent plants framing it, and a comfy black office chair. On the other side a set-up to record videos, with a white-pink gradient wall, a stainless white desk with a small mirror standing on it, and a less-comfy stool to sit on. In a smooth motion, Hisoka downed the rest of his coffee, set the cup aside, and started the camera. The night before he had laid out everything for his next video, a review for a new eyeshadow palette released by another Beauty Youtuber, still trying to get into the game. How Cute.
Hisoka clapped his hands together, putting on his best camera smile. “Hey, Scum! ~ Today I have a very special treat for you all. I got my hands on the new Togari Palette ‘Hunting for Your Dreams’, his first release.” He held up the shimmering silver case and opened it up for the camera to reveal 6 eyeshadows in various shades of orange and red. About half an hour and a couple try hard glamour shots later, Hisoka dropped the Palette with a grin, staring directly into the Camera. In addition to his signature Star and Teardrop under his eyes, he had attempted to imitate a flame-inspired eyeshadow look. “Well, this has been an absolute disaster. I feel like I’m losing clumps of eyeshadow every time I blink, and it feels sandy and irritating on my skin. But you have got to give it to Togari: I have never seen a Palette that features colours that are eye-biting and yet completely bland before. Though the surprise gift of a long, brown hair inside the sealed Palette wasn’t for me. But you know, if you see these Palettes in your local bargain bin, I’d say go for it.” He gave a cheeky wink, before rattling off his usual goodbyes, like and subscribe, yadda yadda.
Click.
Hisoka took the camera and set it by his computer. Before he could even think about editing, he must wipe away whatever the hell was in that shabby palette. Of course it wasn’t the worst make-up he had ever worn; it probably wouldn’t even make it in the bottom 10, he wasn’t here to make friends and spoon-feed his competition compliments. If a creator dares to churn out a subpar product, they have to deal with the consequences.
After practically subjecting himself to water torture via make-up remover towels, the man grabbed another whiteclaw from the fridge, and settled into his office chair. Digging through business emails was a boring, repetitive task, deleting promo-email after promo-email, practically begging him to promote some skin-care vitamins or boring phone app. Clicking the nails of his free hand against his desk, he tapped away at the delete button in a rhythm only known to him.
Finally reaching the bottom of his inbox, he switched to his private Inbox with a satisfied smile, an expected email already waiting for him. “From: I. Zoldyck: Roma Fashion Week Promos”.  To my private Email, dear Illumi? How shockingly Intimate~ Hisoka mocked in his head while opening the mail.
“Hisoka.
Attached are 3 Designs I plan to show off at the show. Chose one for the collaboration and let me know in time.
Sincerely,
Illumi Zoldyck.”
Under his signature, 3 files were lined up, boringly titled “Design Roma 1/2/3”. Hisoka opened the first file and is greeted by a 2-piece suit with a light pink base colour, and blue-green flower highlights that frame the pockets and seams of the jacket, and the belt of the pants. Not bad, not bad.
The second file contained another 2-piece suit, this time with a black base colour, and a repeating roman-vase pattern in eye-catching blues, pinks, and oranges. Lovely pattern, and what a revealing jacket cut~. He was sure he had found his favourite, already planning a matching make-up look. But it wouldn’t hurt looking at the last design for pity, right?
Hisoka audibly gasped in a mixture of shock and flattery and laid a hand over his heart to complete the star performance. Staring back at him was a beautiful white-jeans design, patterned with colourful card-suits dotting the jacket and pants. The pattern was ever so slightly washed out, faking a vintage look. This is it. Mine. His heart was beating through his chest, and for the first time in a while he was truly speechless.
He had 3 more weeks until the show, but his mind was already bursting with inspiration, and when he later laid in bed, he couldn’t contain his grin as he texted.
“Hisoka: You already know which one im choosing~♥️♥️♥️”
 --------------------------------------------
Gon had been streaming for a good hour or so, talking excitedly to his chat about the new Season of Fortnite, admiring new skins that he was definitely going to try and get. Every new pass just meant a new challenge for him to prove himself, and it was undeniable that it was satisfying to work and game hard to get what he wanted. Just as he was about to ask chat if he should go another row, or change games for the night, a discord message drew his attention away.
“Kil: Yo, wanna team up? :p”
Filled with even more excitement, Gon returned his attention back to his stream. “Everyone, today we are going to feature a special guest!”
