would you say you're very familiar with 80s idols/music ie akina seiko etc? I've been trying to get into music of that era but I realized it's way more vast than I thought and was wondering if there are any essential albums from different corners of the time period you'd recommend? I really enjoyed akina's fushigi album but I also like a lot of the lighter stuff I've heard too ^-^

秘めた想い (Himeta Omoi) / Hidden Feelings [Kanji/Romaji Lyrics + ENG Translation]

Hello! I’d like to preface this by saying that I am by no means proficient in Japanese; I’ve only taken beginner’s Japanese at my uni and used a lot of help from Japanese dictionaries and Google Translate to get through this LOL but I’ve adored this song ever since episode 17 aired and was hype when the mini-album came out with the full version. I thought it was simple enough for my skills, so I decided to try translating it ( ´ ▽ ` )

That said, if you see any errors, please feel free to correct me! And if you’d like to use this translation for anything, just credit me (though letting me know would be nice too!). I just wanted to share this because I wasn’t really sure what to do with it lmao

¹ This line is 微笑む 度に 春の but I wasn’t sure if “の” was meant to make the sentence more feminine, invoke a question, or if it was connected to the next line. In the end, I went with the last one based on how the lyrics are sung

² 木漏れ日 (komorebi) means “sunlight filtering through the trees.” It’s kinda awkward trying to make a metaphor out of this, so I adjusted as necessary

³ I wasn’t sure whose perspective this and the previous line’s is from, so I left it vague haha

⁴ I wasn’t sure how this line connected with the previous one, so I used em dashes lol

⁵ This line is 私は 行くの but much like “春の”, I wasn’t sure what role “の” played here. This time around, I felt like it was to make the sentence more feminine

⁶ Then again, I wasn’t quite sure how to connect this line to the previous so I made it one sentence. That said, I’m also not sure whose perspective this particular line is from. Considering “貴方の肩” (your shoulder), I’m assuming it’s the singer’s

as promised, here is the special thing for 1k followers! I made a playlist of some of the idols that appear often on this blog. for the most part, I try to keep this tumblr to contextless images so it can appeal to both 80s jpop fans and general lovers of the 80s aesthetic. but I figure some of you might like this.

The Todoroki Connection

This is a post I’ve been meaning to make for awhile. To clear up some mix-ups about Detective Todoroki in the Cutie Honey manga canon. 

In Cutie Honey 90′s, a sequel to the original manga, Honey teams up with Detective Wataru Todoroki against Panther Claw. I guess you could consider him a fill-in for Seiji (who is in his 50′s at this point of the story). Though unlike Seiji, Honey seems to have some romantic feelings for Todoroki. Nothing that goes anywhere, but there is an implication they go on dates. This is the only time Go Nagai writes Honey as having any sort of interest in a man.

Fast forward to 2002, Go Nagai releases another sequel, Cutie Honey Tennyo Densetsu, which takes place 13 years after 90′s (the manga is set in 2005 for some reason). This time around Honey teams up with Seiji’s daughter Seiko, as well as another Detective Todoroki. This detective’s name is Heita Todoroki, so he’s not the same character, despite how he looks and acts. Heita doesn’t know much about Panther Claw or Cutie Honey. This confused a lot of the readers, who assume this is some sort of continuity mishap. Even the Japanese Wikipedia page for Cutie Honey mistakes them for the same character.

It isn’t until the volume 7 of Tennyo Densetsu that Go Nagai clears up the confusion for us. Heita mentions his uncle was also a police detective. After his stunt with Honey, Wataru Todoroki moved up quite a bit, receiving lots of promotions, but eventually kept screwing up and got demoted. 

Honey herself is shocked she never made the connection before and apparently lost contact with him 20 years ago after her last victory against Panther Claw. She also mentions Wataru was fairly incompetent, and probably only made it far with her help. Ouch! 

I find this interesting, because there’s a little bit of destiny and coincidence that the Todoroki Family gets involved with Honey again. In the case of the Hayami Family, Honey always remained close with them. So much in fact, she created the Honey Cooperation with them.
