Destiel Trope Collection 2024 | Day 5: Touch-Starved
A Gentleman and A Scholar | @Taymarpigeon Rating: Explicit Word Count: 1,963 Main Tags/Warnings: Human Castiel (Supernatural), Human Dean Winchester, Alternate Universe, Soft Castiel/Dean Winchester, Needy Dean Winchester, Dom/sub Undertones, Silver Fox Castiel, References to childhood trauma, References to past abuse, Praise Kink, Established Castiel/Dean Winchester, Fluff and Smut, Comfort Sex, Comfort No Hurt, Touch-Starved Dean Winchester, Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot, Age Difference, bottom Dean Winchester/top Castiel Summary: As you approach your fifties you expect life to slow down, worries and concerns ebbing as you set out on the next stage of your life. Not for Castiel though. Oh he's settled down for sure, married to a hot twenty-seven-year-old that certainly keeps him young at heart, financially stable and well-respected amongst his peers. However, his husband led a turbulent life before Castiel rescued him, the scars of it showing through in private moments and snowy days. When it comes to Dean Winchester there is nothing Castiel won't do, no thought of flight when it's Dean he's being called to fight for. Not that violence is on the cards today, no. Today Dean doesn't need Castiel to be his knight in shining armour, he needs him to be his lover, his attentive, affectionate, softly dommy husband that enjoys nothing better than having Dean curled up in his lap. Castiel would argue this is how anyone should hope to spend their life, regardless of age.
The Liminal Moment | @blessyourhondahurley Rating: Teen & Up Word Count: 2,552 Main Tags/Warnings: alternate universe, massage, meet-cute Summary: After he throws out his back, Dean gets sent to a mysterious location...
An Angel Is Passing By | @melancholictearz Rating: General Word Count: 3,412 Main Tags/Warnings: AU - Castiel Meets Faith!Dean, Selectively Mute Dean, Deaf Castiel, Guardian Angel Castiel, Comfort, No Angst, Sign Language, Holding Hands, Cuddle for Warmth, Fluff Summary: SILENCE WAS HIS WORLD. THEN CASTIEL REVEALED A NEW ONE. In French, "an angel is passing by" is the literal translation of a saying used as silence sets in after a conversation. The kind of awkward seconds hanging in the air whenever someone speaks to Dean and the words won’t come out of his throat despite how much he wants to be heard. Meeting the angel Castiel doesn’t give him much more faith nor resolve the curse of his mutism either. But for an entire night, locked in a church and on the edge of death, Castiel’s tender eyes make Dean feel like he is listened to. Between them, the world goes quiet in a way Dean never experienced.
The First Language We Speak | @blessyourhondahurley Rating: General Word Count: 4,955 Main Tags/Warnings: alternate universe, autistic castiel, massage, touch-starved castiel, fluff, cheeseburgers Summary: A news article about the importance of touch leads Castiel to realize some uncomfortable things about himself and his life. These realizations lead him to Dean, a masseur, who becomes his friend and then more.
One Light In One Room | @notastupidbird Rating: Explicit Word Count: 6,926 Main Tags/Warnings: Canon Universe, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Post-Season/Series 05, Post-Episode: s05e22 Swan Song (Supernatural), Fallen Angel Castiel (Supernatural), Touch-Starved Castiel (Supernatural), Touch-Starved Dean Winchester, First Kiss, First Time, Anal Sex, Coming Untouched, Top Castiel/Bottom Dean Winchester, Porn with Feelings, Angst with a Happy Ending, Sleep Deprivation, Insomnia, Pining, POV Castiel (Supernatural) Summary: After losing his brother in the showdown at Stull Cemetery, Dean has gone into self-imposed exile. He's plagued by insomnia, and the only way he seems to get any sleep at all is when Castiel puts him out with a single touch. When this still doesn't prove enough to bring Dean any real relief from his grief and sleeplessness, Castiel wonders if what Dean really needs is another type of comfort altogether.
Asterism of an F-Series Ford Pick Up | @disabled-dean Rating: Mature Word Count: 17,408 Main Tags/Warnings: Road trip, case fic, ambiguously set in season 12, ptsd, recovery, hell trauma, unresolved sexual tension, unresolved romantic tension, touch starved Dean Winchester, touch adverse Dean Winchester, Cas drives his truck for a case and Dean is incredibly horny about it, only one truck bed, stargazing, sex dreams, nightmares, mild body horror, implied top!castiel, implied bottom!dean winchester, the truck is a metaphor, Dear God Is The Truck A Metaphor Summary: When you've been to hell, desire is isolating and ugly. Or: Cas drives his truck for a case and Dean is exceptionally horny about it. “Once on a hunt when he was a teenager, Dean had been caught too close to an explosive when it had gone off. There had been the moment when the projectile hit, and the moment when it had detonated. And just before it had, there had also been a moment when he had believed that maybe it wouldn’t. He had thought about that moment for years, over and over again, until something else had taken its place. And the way that that moment was quiet, the way it was still- that is how this feels. To lie beside Cas in the bed of his truck, their shoulders barely touching.”
Profound Kisses | @verobatto Rating: Explicit Word Count: 20,729 Main Tags/Warnings: Pining, slow burn, top!Dean/bottom!Castiel, firsts, Destiel kisses, canonverse Summary: Dean knows he's screwed. He discovers he is in love with Castiel in Purgatory, and now he can't even have the angel in front of him, because he knows it's a one sided love. It’s Valentine's day and Dean tries very hard to hook up as always, but he can't get Cas out of his mind. So he drives back to the motel, drunk, and he finds Castiel trying to help him. Then, when Dean asks Castiel for some experimental kisses and the angel accepts, Dean starts a very dangerous game… finding in Castiel's kisses the most delicious experiences, but also, his own perdition. Will Castiel fall in love with him? Or will he stay emotionless as always?

How do you go from Wanting to Having? I think this transition would be hard on my man Castiel.
I was going to do a cute little nice Cas Returns fic - so convinced, was I, that this would be teeny tiny that I only wrote it out here in a tumblr draft and not on my notes app! Anyway I have no idea how long this is and it is...uh...there's elements of cuteness I'd say, but it's more significantly emotional comfort of mostly Cas, ft selective mutism Dean. (Implied offscreen alcoholism.)
Cas is spat back out at 2am on a Tuesday, staggering hard onto the cold dungeon floor. It's pitch black in there, but with Cas’s angelhood restored (though still patchy) he can see well enough to find the stairs. When he tries the door, it's locked from the outside. As dungeons tend to be.
On pushing it open regardless, he finds that a cabinet had been pushed in front of it too. He's certain a human would have a hard time with it, but he shifts it aside with ease. He maneuvers it softly, aware of the time. Angels are always aware of the time. He felt the 40 years of battle through Hell for Dean's soul, he'd known the year-and-change of fight-and-flight through Purgatory, he'd counted every precious second of Jack's beloved company. The only place time didn't exist was the Empty. Or it didn't, until Cas broke it further.
He hopes, briefly, that those he woke up for aid had made it out as smoothly as him. Meg had, as ever, proved invaluable, and it had been a (tempered) joy to find Anna again. He sends silent thanks to Billie, for Their part in his return; They had been as angry as the role of Death allows that They'd been forced into Chuck's narrative once again, furious enough to value sabotaging his ending over Their objections to letting people back. Castiel had sworn that this would be the last time and Billie had said "Yes. It will." though he's sure they both know it's unlikely to be.
It's been 3 weeks and 5 days since he'd sacrificed himself to save Dean. It's strange; he'd thought since making the deal that if he was stolen away at his moment of happiness, he would fall into despair himself. To be ripped away at the time he found what he so deeply wanted, that would surely have broken him, and left him ready to be subsumed. Instead it had galvanised him. The Empty had made a fatal error; it had forgotten that stored within happiness there is always, always hope. Hope is intrinsic to happiness.
He follows that hope to the cracked open door of Jack's room: he's in there, sleeping, curled around his pillow affectionately. Castiel knows there's a knife under his pillow, but he still sleeps with his back to the door. Cas lets him be. He isn't quite ready to explain his absence in a way that would be kind to his son. He has someone else to talk to first.
Cas stops outside of Dean's bedroom. Light shines out from the cracks around the door, but he can tell through reaching out through the ether that Dean is sleeping. With a touch to the handle the door opens silently, and Cas closes it behind him, equally quiet. Every light in the room is on.
There are significantly more lights than there had been when Cas had last seen it. A cluster of floorlamps clutter the footspace, and every flat surface bares as many of the Men-of-Letters flat-roofed table lamps as it can fit. Even some of Dean's guns had been excised in favor of wiring to attach extra overheads that hang somewhat precariously above Dean's supine body.
Though Dean sleeps, a deep frown mars his brow. He's on his side too, facing the centre of the bed, though his arms cradle a bottle of scotch - opened and hours since spilled on the bedspread. To see him again in such bright light is a privilege. He finds, as he does every time that he has been reuinted with Dean, that he is indeed just as beautiful and vulnerable as he had remembered. Sometimes, near the beginning, he had made himself almost convinced that his feeling was exaggerated, his devotion practical and their connection shallow. Every time he found himself in the same room as Dean, he found himself proven wrong.
Privilege though it might be to see him like this, Castiel also wants to see his frown alliviated. Without regret, he turns his hand in the air, dimming every light to a soft glow. He spreads his hand on the mattress and wills away the wet spot that's crawled under Dean's face. Balancing one knee on the mattress Cas maneuvers the bottle out of Dean's hands, gentle and smooth, then stretches back to put it on the floor since the lights crowd the bedside.
Turning his gaze back to Dean, he finds his efforts were for naught. Without the bottle, Dean's hand has balled into a tight fist, squeezing so strongly that it shakes, and his frown has, if anything, deepened. He must be having a nightmare, though its the quietest Cas has ever seen him in one. Typically he thrashes, shouts, fights against fear even in his sleep. Now he's so still with it he seems almost dead, rigor mortised in his own bed.
Castiel remembers a time, less than a decade ago, when he would watch Dean's nightmares run their course. It wasn't impassivity that stayed his hand, but inertia. It had been an as yet uncured habit to stay out of the affairs of the Earthly, to restrict himself to speech-when-spoken-to. In short; he didn't know he could. Now, he has no such reluctance.
He curls his hand over Dean's left shoulder, a mimic of his print on his right, and slides a tender calmness into him, which finally relaxes Dean's posture. His brow smooths over, his jaw goes slack, and his breathing deepens. He's beautiful.
Then he snaps awake. A hand clamps hard over Cas’s wrist, holding him firmly and frightened eyes catch his in the dimness.
"Cas?" Dean's voice is hushed and croaked, as if he'd been sleeping for a long time.
A gentle irony strikes Cas, that Dean was resting while he was fighting his way home. It makes him smile, and that seems answer enough to Dean. He's grabbed fiercely and pulled into a thick hug, one that would render him breathless if he were a human. He holds Dean right back, deliberately softer. It feels important to be careful with him right now.
"I'm here, Dean. I'm sorry that I-"
Dean shoves Cas back and claps a hand over his mouth. Cas is caught in his serious, troubled gaze, and it takes a moment to interpret the slow shake of Dean's head.
Cas nods, and Dean draws his hand back. "I understand. I won't apologise."
Contrary, Dean huffs and rolls his eyes, as if to say, when do you ever? He doesn't speak. It's more than a little worrying. Not one to go unheard, though, Dean takes one of Cas’s hands in his and laces their fingers together, giving Cas a defiant expression. Cas’s heart catches.
"You don't have to," he makes himself say, "It's alright, Dean. What I said doesn't have to change anything between us. I love you, and that's..."
He was going to say, that's all you need to know, but Dean had rolled his eyes again and pressed a kiss to the back of Cas’s hand. At Cas's trailing off, he smirks, which slides away quickly into indecision. Dean tilts their joined hands back and forth together for a while, clearly thinking something through, and Cas lets him, trying not to squeeze too hard from his mounting, perilous hope. His hope in the Empty had been merely to live. To exist in a world where Dean knew the truth; that he is both lovable and loved. Now he is hurtling towards - something else.
It's funny (in the human, unfunny sense): he'd spent so long tamping down his possible happiness in fear of the Empty that now that it can be accessed freely, the idea of great happiness is a little frightening. What does a world look like where he gets what he wants? It's unimaginable.
He tries to untangle their fingers, at that thought, but Dean holds him fast, both with his grip and with a raised, unimpressed, eyebrow. It seems his attempt at absconding has made Dean's mind up. He reaches past Cas and opens the top drawer of his bedside cabinet, and drops a notebook into Cas’s lap.
The notebook is spiral bound and cheap-looking, its cover merely denoting the word 'Notebook' and its A5 size. The plastic of the cover is rough under Cas’s thumb. It's a far cry from Dean's leather bound hunting journals.
Correctly interpreting Cas’s tactile investigation as cowardliness, Dean impatiently flips it open with one hand to a random page.
You can have it.
That's what it says, all the way across the double page spread. Written over and over again in ball point pen, uncaring for or deliberately defeat of the evenly spaced blue lines meant to corral the written word.
You can have it, and variations thereupon: You can have it, damn it; could have fucking taken me, asshole; what do you think is supposed to make me happy now, you arrogant, stupid son of a bitch?
The me of the last is underlined so harshly that the paper is ripped. This outpouring is repeated on every page but the first, which instead says only, Come back. Those two words have been traced over enough that the message is engraved over the next three pages.
"Dean, I..." Cas begins, then has to stop, overwhelmed.
The magnitude of Dean sharing this work of grief is not lost on him. Perpetually making themselves vulnerable; is that not the story of their relationship? He follows the lines of Come back with his finger until Dean taps his chin up. He's leaned in close, the ends of his hair tickling Castiel's forehead.
He opens his mouth, but this time only manages a click in his throat that Cas thinks is supposed to be the start of his name.
"I understand," Cas says again, because he does. He brings a faintly trembling hand to the back of Dean's neck to keep him from pulling away - and, more, to keep himself from doing the same. "Dean, I never anticipated this. This is frightening to me. My heart is-"
Cas presses Dean's hand, still linked with his, to his chest, showing him the dizzying speed of its beating. Then he laughs, faintly, at having dropped another sentence:
"I think I left all my words in the dungeon."
Dean answers with a swift smile, his gaze radiating pure affection. He brings their hands to his own chest, where his heart beats just as fast. Dean kisses him, then, on his left eyebrow, then the cheek when Cas looks back at him.
"Dean," Cas says, half-warning, half-encouragement when Dean ducks around to kiss the ridge of his ear, and then "Dean..." in a half-moan when his teeth catch his throat.
Undeterred, Dean kisses whatever point of Cas’s face that strikes his fancy, rendering Cas a trembling mess before their lips even connect (which they do only when Cas holds Dean still and kisses him himself. The noise Dean makes is almost a laugh, and Cas will remember it for the rest of his life).
It's only a few minutes, though, before Cas has to stop. He's progressed from trembling to shaking, and the pleasant tingling across his limbs had turned sharply into pins-and-needles.
"I'm sorry," Cas says on an inhale, pulling away from Dean, and clarifies quickly, "I don't think I'm ready for this. It makes me too happy. I'm afraid. I can't lose you again."
Dean is tender with him, brushing Cas’s cheek soothingly with his thumb. His mouth and jaw work, and this time he gets out a "Ss", and then a "Shh".
He keeps on shushing as he wraps Cas back up in a hug, tight enough that all the rattling parts of Cas feel like they're slowly compressed back into his body. Dean breathes deeply and deliberately, and Cas copies him, noticing for the first time the room's stale-sweat-stink, and the familiar scent of second-hand gasoline in Dean's hair. It takes time, but eventually Cas is able to clutch at Dean too, which earns him an extra squeeze around his ribs.
"I love you," Cas says, and it feels too loud for the room, so he whispers it instead, "I love you, Dean."
Dean buries his face into Cas’s shoulder, in what could be charitably imagined as a nod. Neither of them says another word for the whole night.
They're both terrified of what they want to give - terrified of happiness. But in that awful, devestating, harrowing joy is the glimmer of what is going to get them through it: always, always hope.

When Dean finally rescued Cas from the empty, he expected a happy reunion. He envisioned a strong hug like the first time he had escaped. He expected a long-awaited kiss and repeated confessions that weren’t said with sorrow or heartache. He expected to find the same Cas that was taken, but that would have been too easy.
Cas was left awake, alone, and in complete darkness for months on end.
So when Dean went into the empty, ready to wake up the love of his life, he found Cas curled in on himself—staring blankly out into the void of nothingness. He whispered something so softly and quickly that Dean couldn’t pick up on the actual words, but it sounded familiar. Almost like he was humming a song.
Dean tried to get him to stand up on his own, but he quickly realized that Cas wasn’t even looking at him. His gaze was distant, seeing something Dean can’t even imagine. He then noticed the white film over his eyes dimmed the once bright blue.
His fingertips gently traced over the skin he had only dreamt of touching for months before he took a deep, shaky breath to steady himself. With that slight pause, Dean used whatever desperate strength he had and dragged Cas back to the portal.
Back home.
As they got closer, the light of the portal seemed to startle Cas, and he started to shove Dean away. Dean had to put Cas down so he could take his green jacket off and place it over Cas’s head to calm him before he slowly continued to walk through the portal and into the bunker’s library where Jack, Rowena, Eileen, and Sam were waiting for them.
When they walked through, Dean quickly shushed them as he fell to his knees with Cas still in his arms, hidden under the jacket, and covering his ears at the sudden loud voices surrounding them.
Dean looked around at his family, all sharing the same worried glances knowing they were on the same page. Cas’s welcome home party would be pushed back until further notice.
Cas didn’t cry. His expression didn’t change much at all. All Cas did was sit or lay on Dean’s bed with the lights off. All but the desk light. It was an old lightbulb, so the light wasn’t a bright white like the rest of the place. Instead, it illuminated a soft golden glow against the wall.
Cas squinted at it at first, blinking so inhumanly at it, until all Cas did was stare at it. Whenever Dean made any move to turn it off or even just get near the lamp, Cas made a little whine at the back of his throat.
Little noises were the most Dean can get out of Cas. At least it brought him a little relief. It meant Cas could see him at that moment.
Cas still did that rapid talking or singing whenever it was a little bit too quiet. It made Dean wonder if Cas knew he was out of the Empty. Especially during those times when he would stare right past him, unblinking with cold eyes.
It was only the end of the second week when Dean broke down.
[continue under the cut or on AO3]
He didn’t mean to. He was trying so damn hard to keep it together, especially in front of Cas, but one night he just lost it. He can blame the lack of booze in his system, or as he wants, he can blame Sam, who came up to him about a stupid case. It pissed him off more than it should have. The fact that Sam even believed for a second that he would leave the bunker while Cas was like-well the way he was, just gave him enough of an excuse to raise his voice at someone.
Eileen had to step in and tell him to cool off.
Dean stormed off without a glance back and went to his room. He changed into his pajamas and climbed into bed beside Cas. He laid on his stomach as he wrapped one arm over the top of Cas’s waist, scooting close enough so that he could rest his head on Cas’s shoulder. He then opened his mouth to wish him goodnight just like every night, but something in Dean just broke.
He felt the pressure rise up his throat as he tried to hide his face into the familiar body beside him, but the sob still came.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry it took me so long to go get you. Fuck, Cas, please.” Dean took a shaky breath, sniffling as he reached to hold Cas’s hand closer to him. “We missed- I...I missed you. I missed you so much, Cas.” Dean brought Cas’s hand up to his lips and kissed the knuckles before letting the hand rest by his head. His eyes closed as he sighs, “I love you. So come back to me, okay?"
The only response Dean got was a squeeze of the hand, which was enough hope for the future, and more than Dean could have ever asked for at that moment.
As the days went on, Cas didn’t change. Literally and figuratively. He was still an angel, so there was no need for him to shower or brush his teeth, but Dean swore that Cas’s facial hair was growing, so he liked shaving him at least once a week. Cas seemed to like it by the humming noise he made.
They did learn a couple of things as the days went on.
One, peace and quiet are not what they strive for.
It only brought Cas anxiety, and his humming or singing became much louder and more desperate. They fixed that problem with a Bluetooth speaker constantly playing music in the background, a playlist Jack made mixed in with a playlist Jack helped Dean make. It made the humming stop, and Cas started to roll over in bed. He even sat back against the headboard with his eyes closed a few times.
A month after Cas got back, Dean's phone died in the middle of the night, and the silence must have gotten to him. He covered his ears while he started muttering to himself again. Dean woke up and pulled Cas to his chest while softly sing to him in his still half-asleep phase. He didn’t know why that was his first instinct, but he went along with it cause it started to calm Cas down. Then, Cas held him back for the first time—tucking his head right under Dean's jaw and relaxing.
Dean tried not to stiffen at the touch; if he were honest with himself, he would admit he was trying not to cry because he was busy singing. Busy, not wanting to disrupt this moment.
That night Dean sang all night long until Jack checked on them in the early hours and connected his phone.
Two, always have a light source on.
The lamp was the first one they had. Cas constantly wanted it on, but it bothered Dean all the time when he wanted to sleep. So they bought a cool starlight projector, Sam’s idea, that kept the light on the cement ceiling and not on Dean’s face. Cas seemed to enjoy it as he laid on his back, watching it all night, letting Dean curl up on his side as he slept through the night.
Three, never leave Cas alone.
Nobody wanted to leave Cas alone for more than a minute if they could help it. So they made plans to keep him company at all hours of the day. Of course, they weren’t crowding him. They all came in one by one, except for Dean, who would say, “This is my room. I get to come and go as I damn well please.”
Sam liked to sit by Cas's side and talk nerd like they usually would while cleaning his guns or doing research to help another hunter. He would even pause during the one-way conversation to give Cas some time to answer or try to imagine what Cas would say in that situation. Sam was always calm, wanting to keep it as normal as possible while Cas just stared at him, sometimes his eyebrows knitted together, and Dean had to excuse himself as he felt his chest tighten up.
Eileen sat by his side and watched shows she liked while she talked to Cas out loud and signed so he could hear her voice. Even then, she didn’t talk much. Instead, she let the laptop do the talking as she pets Cas’s hair while sitting on the chair by the bed.
Jack came in the most next to Dean. He liked reading to him or talking about how his skills as the new God have improved thanks to Amara.
"Dad, I hope you'll be proud of me." Jack once whispered to Cas, who was having a bad day, checking out more than usual as he stared off into the distance. Eyes wide and almost screaming.
It was almost the end of the second month when another big mile-stone happened.
Jack was lying in bed with Cas while Dean was at his desk, cleaning his guns obsessively again. Jack was reading him a book he bought during his recent trip to the bookstore with Eileen, it was a Star Wars story.
Jack was getting into the book as he read slower but louder during a big fight scene. He got so excited that he even jumped up and looked back at Cas, "Did you hear that, Dad? He won!"
Cas smiled back at him- a genuine smile- and Dean almost dropped the piece of metal in his hand while Jack froze, his shoulders tightening up while he scrunched up his lips as if trying to hold back his cry.
Instead, he quietly composed himself as he asked in a shaky voice, "You want me to read the rest?"
Cas only blinked at him, keeping the slight smile, and Jack took it as a yes. Jack sat beside him again with a big smile plastered on his face, wiping his eyes every other word, as he rested his head on Cas's shoulder to continue reading. Dean didn’t miss when Cas tilted his head down to rest his cheek on Jack’s hair.
He had to excuse himself again.
After that day, Cas slowly started to open up a little more.
Once Dean woke up with Cas out of bed. Dean was already in full panic mode, his shoes on the wrong feet and jacket inside out as he called out for Sam.
Then just as quick as the panic came, relief flooded him when he found Cas in the kitchen trying to make coffee. He turned towards Dean and gave him the smallest of smiles, but it filled Dean with such solace that he just dragged himself to Cas’s space. Dean held his arms open to press Cas into him, and without a second thought, Cas fell right into him as if it was an everyday normal occurrence.
That was the start of Cas now being up and around the bunker. It was like when a baby starts crawling, everyone keeping tabs on the baby’s first steps, except this baby was an eon old celestial being.
The library, Dean’s room, the Dean-cave, and the kitchen were Cas’s favorite places just to sit. He always had Dean’s headphones on, softly playing music, just in case it went quiet, and it took a while for him to be able to walk around without those.
It was the sixth month when Cas wished Dean a goodnight first and then added, “I love you, Dean.”
Dean fought the lump in his throat, but Cas instantly pulled him in, his arms wrapped securely around him. He had so much he wanted to say to Cas just to hear his voice again, anything to listen to his voice again, but instead, he kisses Cas’s chest before saying, “I love you, too.”
Days came and went. Sometimes it seemed like Cas was getting better as he talked a little more, but then those days would come when he would just stare off into the stars on their ceiling. Not moving an inch or bothering to fake breath like he liked. Those days the music was a little louder, and Cas held on to Dean a little tighter.
“I don’t want to go back. Please,” Cas pleaded as he stared wide-eyed at the darkness in the corner of their room. As if he was having a nightmare with his eyes wide open. “Please don’t make me…I-I don’t want to be in the dark again!”
Dean took Cas’s face in between his hands to hold his gaze. Only talking when he knew Cas was seeing him. “It’s okay, Cas. I got you. Nobody’s taking you away from me ever again.”
“Promise?” Dean felt Cas’s grip at his shoulder, holding him with desperation.
“Promise.”
That’s how Cas became human.
The nightmares have him waking up screaming some days, but at least Cas knew he was safe from the Empty’s clutches.
He was going to live his human life being loved and taken care of, and Dean was happy to say he felt Cas was doing the same for him.

Just something for the road:
When Cas disappears, Dean stops speaking.
It’s not all at once but gradual. A sort of regression into himself.
Sam does the best he can. He asked Dean if he wanted to talk in the beginning, but Dean would just tilt the bottle back farther and utter those famous words.
“I’m fine. Sammy really.”
Now he’s lucky if Dean speaks a letter. His sign language is a bit rusty, but he leaves a book on Dean’s desk one night and they slowly start to pick it up. At first it’s difficult. Dean usually has some kind of booze in him and his hands are sloppy. Inconsistent.
They develop different variations of words. Just for them.
Ironically, it’s Dean who comes up with the code for I love you. They never exactly talk (or sign) about it. One night, when Dean is starting to wean off the beer and they’re draped over the couch watching a movie, he stands and looks at Sam. He tugs his ear twice and then with the same hand taps his heart once.
It takes Sam awhile to figure out what it actually means. But once he does the message is tapped out all the time.
Over a crowed restaurant and an inside joke about the pin the waitress is wearing. Dean beats him at cards and they laugh and laugh, Dean tugging his ear during the disaster that is their game. Sam never minds. He savors the constant reminders of Dean’s love. He also pretends not to know why the sudden change to a “chick flick” person occurred. Something happened in that basement between Cas and his brother. And reciprocating emotion has never been Dean’s strong suit.
Sam goes out to the store one day and comes back to the bunker with groceries in his arms. After setting them down on the table he wanders towards his room. The shower is going and a thrill goes through him when he hears a voice drifting through the halls.
Dean is singing.
Dean Winchester is singing in the shower and Sam hears his brothers voice for the first time in nearly a year. He sits and listens for at least twenty minutes. Allowing the tune of “Carry on My Wayward Son” to wash over him in the deep raspiness that he missed so much.
The next night they’re sitting on the couch. Dean is having a beer and on a commercial Sam turns and signs without thinking.
Did you love him?
Dean stares for a minute, and at first Sam is about to repeat himself when Deans lifts his hands.
Would you believe me if I told you it doesn’t hurt anymore?
Come on Dean. I know you better than that.
Guess I never officially came out did I.
I’ve known for a longgg time Dean. (He even adds the extra g’s)
Yeah I guess you would. Still like women you know.
I know.
They barely mention Cas again.
Then exactly a year and three months after Cas gets sucked into hell, they get a visit.
Sam is always up early these days. He walks into the kitchen groggily. Rubbing his eyes and yawning when he feels it. Sam looks up.
—-
Dean pretends not to think about a year and theee months without Cas. It’s not even an important anniversary really. He feels the weight today though than any other day that month.
He hears voices in the kitchen and wonders if Sam is talking to himself again. He wraps the robe around himself and snuggles Miracle for a few seconds before making his way to the kitchen. Sam must have been up for awhile. He can smell the coffee mixed with pancakes. Dean smiles as he imagines the syrup mixed with butter.
Dean walks in the kitchen and automatically starts to sign how good the breakfast smells when the talking stops abruptly.
He looks up.
“Cas.”
His voice is croaky but just as deep. He knows Sam must have his mouth open for flies at the first word he’s heard him say in months but at that moment he doesn’t even care.
“Hello Dean.”
Sam is gone in an instant and it’s just them. Dean standing there in his now ridiculous robe and Cas in his ever perfect trench coat.
Cas speaks first. “Sam told me you don’t like to talk. That’s fine.”
Dean just stares.
Cas swallows. “About what I said-“
Dean holds up his hand. He’s been going over the conversation in his head since the moment Cas disappeared. He knows what to say. It’s only a matter of getting the words out.
Instead, he kisses him.
It’s the first time Deans ever kissed a boy and he loves it. And it’s with Cas. After a second they find a rhythm with their lips. The feeling in his chest only grows the more they move.
When they break apart, Dean rests his forehead against Cas’s. He finds his breath and feels himself grinning like an idiot.
He whispers, “I love you too.”
They don’t stop kissing for a long time.

hi im pushing my autistic dean agenda yet again :) here’s my dean-centric s4 headcanons/loose rewrite!
canonically one of dean’s responses to trauma is to lose speech/selective mutism. we see this after sam dies in the apocalypse world and dean talks about it happening after mary died very early on in the series as well. this is becuz he’s autistic thank u for coming to my ted talk 🥰
anyway when dean comes back he’s just been through what we can pretty definitively call the most traumatic experience of his life. decades of torture PLUS torturing other people which is particularly painful for him as someone who considers himself a hero and protector. in my concept when dean comes back he still heads straight to bobby’s, but he hasn’t been able to say a single word since he got back topside. bobby opens the door and dean wants so badly to say something, to show bobby it’s really him, but the words stick in his throat and all he can do is look at him and hold out his arm and hope that bobby recognises that he’s offering to be tested. bobby’s known the winchesters since sam and dean were kids - he’s seen dean lose speech before. the fact that bobby asks, “what the hell happened?” and dean’s mouth opens soundlessly, his shoulders shrugging when nothing comes out, is actually what fully convinces bobby that this IS dean, instead of some creature wearing his face.
bobby and sam both learned some sign so that when dean loses speech they can still communicate, and it comes in really handy in this period. dean doesn’t manage to talk for several weeks, until one day he finally manages to choke out “sammy?” and gets a thrilled “dean!” in response. he stops using metal cutlery, stops shaving - every time he holds something with a blade, or prongs, or even just made of metal he flashes back to standing over souls on the rack, and retches and retches until he’s crying. sometimes he wakes up screaming, wracked by phantom pains of having his skin peeled off and hooks impaled through his limbs, and it’s the only sound he makes for those long, long weeks. sometimes he goes even more quiet, somehow, like he’s barely breathing, and sam sits with him for hours, hand in hand, just being there so dean knows he’s not alone.
when the angels find them - in bobby’s house, becuz they haven’t sought out whatever saved dean. they’ve just been trying to help him cope - uriel says, scornful, “this is the righteous man? this broken, weak little thing?” and castiel says, self-assured, “i am the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition”, as though it is anywhere near enough, and sam has to clench his fists to stop himself from starting a fight he knows he could never win.

StackedNatural Day 50: 2x07, 13x05
StackedNatural Masterpost: [x]
November 9, 2021
2x07: The Usual Suspects
Written by: Cathryn Humphris
Directed by: Mike Rohl
Original air date: November 9, 2006
Plot Synopsis:
Dean has been framed for murder. Sam tries to find the one behind it.
Features:
The past comes back to bite you in the ass, Dean’s arrest, Sam’s escape, death omens, Supernatural says ACAB.
My Thoughts:
This is a fun episode - the “previously on” montage of all the lies they tell in the course of their work is great, as is Dean’s look directly into the camera at the end of the cold open.
I like POV episodes that show how batshit insane the Winchesters look from an outside perspective. I like when they have to tell the truth but do it in a way that seems like an wild lie, even when they’re not trying to. I like how both of them keep trying to solve the case rather than worrying about what’s going to happen to them. I think the prison plotline in First Blood (12x09) should have been more along these lines.
I was expecting this to be an episode for the Deangirls but it’s actually one for the Samgirls, although they both get to be really clever. I like seeing their standard operations for when they get split up, and their codes that they know the other will understand. It’s fun that they both figured out the anagram thing individually. Unfortunately they are both idiots who refuse to wear gloves at active crime scenes when they know that law enforcement has their prints connected to dozens of crimes.
The major drawback to this episode for me is that Linda Blair is just not very good in this role. She has a decent amount of credits on IMDb (including The Exorcist, which I think is what Dean is referencing when he says she looks familiar at the end? She was only 5 when she played Regan but it’s the most well-known thing on her resume that I can see). Unfortunately she’s on screen a lot so it does drag the tension of the episode down quite a bit for me. I’d rather watch Sam and/or Dean banter with other cops than watch her slowly figure out that ghosts are real.
Notable Lines:
“My name is Dean Winchester. I'm an Aquarius. I enjoy sunsets, long walks on the beach, and frisky women. And I did not kill anyone.”
“Nice lady.” “Yeah, for a cop.”
Laura’s (completely subjective) Episode Rating: 7.8
IMdB Rating: 8.7
13x05: Advanced Thanatology
Written by: Steve Yockey
Directed by: John F. Showalter
Original air date: November 9, 2017
Plot Synopsis:
Sam and Dean work on a case involving the ghost of a demented doctor; they get assistance from an unexpected source; Castiel finds his way back to the Winchesters.
Features:
Abandoned asylum, selective mutism due to trauma, Sam’s extremely bad cures for depression, Dean’s suicidal tendencies a.k.a. the bottom of the widower arc, the New Death, the Winchesters have work to do, Cas is welcomed home.
My Thoughts:
The sweet, sweet end of the widower arc is upon us <3.
Even though Cas is barely in this episode, in context it gets up there almost with Goodbye Stranger for classic Destiel episodes.
The extremely overt suicidal ideation (and just straight up suicide) in this episode, followed by Dean’s complete 180 on Jack and cheerful demeanor in the next episode really drives home how much Cas means to Dean. Obviously the loss of Mary and Crowley were also part of the issue, but Dean’s depression vanishes overnight with his reunion with Cas.
Dean’s not a stranger to suicidal ideation and depression (hello, all of season 3), but this episode makes it extremely obvious. He already had the correct dosage of medication to stop his heart prepared and was carrying it around in case he had an excuse to use it.
There’s a lot of parallels to the seminal Deangirl episode, Dead in the Water, in Advanced Thanatology. Dean is attached to a traumatized child with selective mutism who is using artwork to communicate what’s happening to him, only in this episode he wasn’t able to save the kid. There’s also parallels to In My Time of Dying, with reapers and an out-of-body experience where you view your own dead or almost-dead body. Only this time, he wants to pass on and isn’t allowed.
Billie as Death is an amazing turn, and even though I loved the old Death (his entrance… iconic), I might like Billie even more. She has a more direct connection to them which makes her attention personal. Every line she delivers could be listed in my “notable lines” section. In a world where the finale was written in a way that made sense with how it was being built up, I don’t think she would have necessarily ended up as a clear antagonist, which would have been amazing.
At the end of the episode, just before Cas calls while they’re in the car, he lists him and Mary as the primary causes of his depression. He puts the loss of Cas on par with the initial source of trauma that he experienced at four years old and is now reliving. That is some powerful stuff. And then the lighting design of the phone call happens - Dean hears Cas’ voice on the phone and his face lights up as though the sun is rising. The camera cuts away before it can go out again. Sam is not featured in this revelation at all.
The alley scene I’ll get into next episode, but it has been confirmed that the blue cross in the background of this scene was added for set dressing (@weedsinavacantlot used to live right by that alley), so the choice was made to metaphorically give Dean back the angel watching over him.
Notable Lines:
“I know what it’s like to see monsters. And I know that even when they’re gone, they never really go away. You see ‘em when you close your eyes. You see ‘em in your dreams.”
“I’ve been down this road before and I fought my way back. I will fight my way back again. [...] Same way I always do – bullets, bacon, and booze. A lotta booze.”
“It’s funny to hear a Winchester talk about the finality of dying.”
“This universe can be so many things, and sometimes, it is poetic.”
“You have changed. And you tell people it’s not a big deal. You tell people you’ll work through it but you know you won’t, you can’t and that scares the hell out of you.”
“ I couldn’t save Mom. I couldn’t save Cas. I can’t even save a scared little kid. Sam keeps trying to fix it, but I just keep dragging him down. So I’m not going to beg. Okay, if it’s my time, it’s my time.”
Laura’s (completely subjective) Episode Rating: 9.8
IMdB Rating: 8.7
In Conclusion: Someone explain why Sam thinks that beer for breakfast and strip clubs are the cure for depression?

fic housekeeping
Current WIPs. I haven’t done this in awhile (7 months) and that’s kind of a gut punch since purgatorio was at 32k the last time. Hrrrrg. but this is 211k total of ducifer now
Only one of these really has an official summary which is why nothing is included lol.
between the daylight and the deep sea [s9, loosely | 5 Acts, multichap] Relationships: Dean/Lucifer, Background Adam/Michael, Background Sam/Amy Pond, Dean & Original Characters, Sam & Eve, God & Death Words: 75,974
Some Tags: Future Fic (undeclared number of a few hundred years), King of Hell Dean, Knight of Hell Lucifer, Viceroy of Heaven Castiel, Duke of Purgatory Sam, High-Powered Dean, High-Powered Sam, mantles of power, Fae Courts, Fae Politics, Avalon, Background Canon Characters
Notes: Hi I love this story but I’m currently in a spot where I have to edit and then do a full read-through (and probably recording so I can listen to more than a very-slow processing text-to-speech reader). So that’s. A lot. And I need more than one day off to do that (so maybe next week). It’s doing nicely! But jeez I have like the entire middle of Act III to write.
purgatorio [s7/s8 | 2 parts, multichap] part I: bury me in the glow Relationships: Dean/Lucifer, Dean/Castiel, Dean/Benny, Benny/Castiel, Benny/Lucifer Words: 89,547
Some tags: Survival, agonizing slowburn for all relationships :|, polyamory, Lucifer trying to be a good brother, archangels really don’t belong in Purgatory, Low-Powered Lucifer, Pacifist Castiel, Medic Castiel, magic, blood magic, unhealthy amounts of blood magic, monsters, beasts
Notes: p1 is 75 chapters for sure. It’s mostly done except for some parts here and there and polishing. p2 got saved by LARPing.
part II: cut the cord Relationships: Dean/Lucifer, Dean/Castiel, Dean/Benny, Benny/Castiel, Benny/Lucifer, Sam & Dean, Sam & Castiel, Castiel & Meg, Dean & Charlie, Sam & the Trans
Some Tags: Still Slowburn I’m Sorry, PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Selective Mutism, Nightmares, Angst with a Happy Ending, LARPing
how to form soulbonds and lose friends [s11/12 | 2 parts, multichap | soulbond | Relationships: Dean/Lucifer, Lucifer & Heaven, Dean & Heaven Words: 29,726
Some tags: developing soulbonds, grace sharing, thought sharing, mental links, horror elements, sentient Heaven, sentient grace, mantles of power, Slowburn
Notes: p1 is mostly done, or at least I know where it’s going. p2 is a bit more up in the air than I would prefer.
once it falls apart my head’s in the clouds (catifer) [s13 | multichap] Relationships: Dean/Lucifer, Lucifer & Jack Words: 14,003
Some tags: Crack Treated Seriously, Secret Relationship, Non-Linear Timeline, Established Relationship, Slowburn, Low-Powered Lucifer, Shapeshifting
Notes: I got the beginning, middle, and end lmfao. I just. Y’know. Would like everything else to exist. Also yes, it’s slowburn smack in the middle of an Established Relationship fic. :)
been asleep for most of my life [s15 | multichap | soulmate AU] Relationships: Dean/Lucifer, Adam/Michael, Castiel/Crowley, Dean & Castiel, Lucifer & Crowley Words: 11,248
Some tags: Post-Canon, Slowburn, Chuck Shurley’s A+ Parenting, emotional world tour, Established Adam/Michael, Heaven-Hell Peace Treaties
Notes: Primarily, more than anything, I have to finish my rewatch of the show (I’m in s14), as Netflix keeps reminding me. I’ve been dragging my heels for really no reason other than time and energy, because I only really got mad with s15 towards the second half of the season iirc.
LOOK I DON’T KNOW WHY I’VE BEEN SO ABOUT MANTLES OF POWER. But every time it’s been different so whatev I do what I want, per usual. I’ve been working on this post for too long I’m going to bed.

An Angel Is Passing By
An Angel Is Passing By https://ift.tt/bC2FeLB by melancholictearz In French, an angel is passing by is the literal translation of a saying used as silence sets in after a conversation.
