HELLO ALL! welcome to another year of selfshiptober. i've noticed this is pretty much the 'official' selfship tober event now, which honestly warms my heart! i love seeing what this wonderful community does with my prompts :)

this year, i'm doing things a little differently. EACH DAY HAS TWO PROMPTS ASSIGNED TO IT. the first set is SHIPPY, while the second set is SPOOKY. you may either COMBINE THE TWO PROMPTS TOGETHER or CHOOSE ONE OF THE PROMPTS. the spooky prompts are a bit on the grittier side and probably won't appeal to most, so if you'd like to only use the first set of prompts and completely ignore the second, be my guest! on the other hand, if you prefer the gritter prompts, you can only use the second set of prompts, you can do that too! if you want an extra challenge, you can create a piece that incorporates both of the day's prompts. you can also change your approach depending on how you feel that day!

Frustration was evident on your face as your phone loudly buzzed again. Again with the unknown number flashing across the screen. Ranking your hand through your hair, you picked up the phone with your opposite hand. Sliding a finger over the screen, unlocking the message as the sender “unknown” appeared on the top. A simple text message appeared in the chat bubble: I see you.

You jumped back, dropping the phone on the table before looking around. “See me?” You questioned out loud. Your fists tightened as your knuckles turned white. There was no way he could be in the office…right? Moistening your lips with your tongue, you picked up your phone again and typed a quick message back: fuck you.

Placing the phone face down on the table, you turned to focus on the files in front of you. Each file labeled with what contents laid inside. Evidence, victims, locations, DNA… etc.

A sigh fell from your lips as you thumbed through coroner reports. Each victim was different, but suffered the same ultimate end. Strangulation.

Picking up another report, you pinched the bridge of your nose. “I don’t get it…”

Not a single victim had a similarity that you could gather. Each one looked different, from different parts of the city, different social rankings… there was nothing that would link them together. Each murder was seemingly random at best.

Your phone buzzed again.

And somehow… the bastard had managed to get a hold of your information and was constantly taunting you through messages, letters… whatever he could to send fear rocketing through your body.

Caller ID flashed on the screen.

”…he’s calling?”

Pausing for just a moment in fear, you finger tapped the green icon before holding the phone up to your ear. “Hello?”

A deep chuckle echoed in your ear. “Would you like a hint, little mouse?”

Your lips dipped into a frown. “Don’t call me—”

He tutted, “ah ah, that’s not how we get what we want.”

”Who is this?!”

”Where’s the fun in that!” He replied, playfully. “Now c’mon… do you want a hint?”

”…I wish you’d leave the fuck alone.”

”oooo so angry,” he taunted. “You’re overthinking it. It’s quite simple.”

You spread out the files of each victim across the table while balancing the phone between your shoulder and your ear. “Why are you trying to help me catch you?”

Another low chuckle tickled against your ear. “Because, little mouse, you’re the only one that can stop me.”

Confusion filled your head at his words. “-what?”

“Time’s ticking,” he said, switching subjects. “Hint or not.”

Cursing under your breath, you let out a frustrated sigh. “Fine. Hint.”

”They all frequented one place…”

The line went dead.

”Frequented one place?” You asked out loud. You quickly texted one of the guys in tech about pulling up the victims’ credit card statements to maybe show if there was a location they all shared in common. How you hadn’t thought of that to begin with was beyond you. Idiot, you thought.

Glancing at the clock, you cursed again. It was almost midnight.

Carefully, you gathered all your files and placed them carefully into the file cabinet and locked it. Exhausted, you finally grab your coat, purse and other belongings before leaving the office to finally head home for the night. As you stopped onto the dark street you went to place your phone into your purse as you began walking, but did not hear the phone fall onto the street.

”Excuse me!”

Your eyes widened in surprise before turning around and seeing a man holding up your cell phone, trying to wave you down. Heat crept up the back of your neck, embarassed by how you hadn’t noticed.

“You dropped this,” he said, flashing a toothy smile at you.

You smiled back before taking the phone from him. “Thank you. I’d lose my head if it wasn’t attached.”

He shook his head, before lowering the hood over his head, revealing dark locks of hair that contrasted to the playfulness of his seafoam eyes. “After a long day of work,” he said. “It’s sometimes hard to keep track of everything.

Laughing, you nodded before securely placing your phone in your purse this time. “Thank you again,” you said, offering a polite wave before finally taking your leave back to your apartment.

”Anytime,” he said, pulling the hood over his head once you were out of earshot. “Little mouse.” He slipped back into the darkness before pulling out his phone and texting you one last time for the night: shouldn’t talk to strangers, pretty thing.

A message appeared: leave him out of this, stop watching me!

His tongue ran along his lower lip before twisting into a smirk: sweet dreams, little mouse.
