April, 2024 | Shetland lace shawl
Tumblr media
Hi there! It’s been a while. I’ve been kept busy by all my university work…and this shawl.
The shawl is knitted to celebrate the wedding of my friend (now friends, I should say). A wedding is really the perfect excuse for all the heritage crafts and heirloom projects that might seem too serious to gift in other occasions. I did ask the recipient beforehand if she would like it, though, and I was so, so honoured that I got an enthusiastic ‘yes’. I’m sure this sentiment is shared by many makers, whatever gift they are making.
Shetland fine openwork, a knitted lace, seems to have emerged with the beginning of the reign of Queen Victoria, who championed and popularised the craft. It was probably spread from the Isle of Unst to other parts of Shetland. What surprised me the most when I first read about it was that Shetland shawls and other lace pieces were largely exported as luxury items and rarely worn by islanders themselves. Women bought yarn from spinners and knitted mostly in their homes. They then took them to local merchants and exchange the finished objects for goods or (commonly after the 1880s) money to supplement the household income. The ‘supplement’ nature of this work probably means it was not compensated as much as a job outside the home would be for the same hours and skills. Besides, it was not always easy to spin an even 1-ply yarn at 1600 metres per 100 grams. For a piece of knitting with a large ‘plain’ area (i.e. only knit stitches), the unevenness was impossible to hide but could only be discovered after the area was worked. Then the maker had to either frog (unravel) the area or continue with the risk of the whole piece not being able to sell.
Whilst it is very reasonable to point out that Shetland ladies did not usually wear this type of lace (I’ve been to the Scottish Highlands once, in summer, and it was not fine lace weather), I imagine that at least for some, it wasn’t just about making money. Some sort of fulfilment must have been from the satisfaction of having a piece ‘properly done’ by continuing and adapting a traditional pattern, technique or material. I think this sort of satisfaction is also why many modern knitters are willing to spend hundreds of hours on lacework.
Intricate handknitted lace items can still be bought today (a quick search on Etsy would show many are form eastern European countries with a long and prominent craft tradition), but many are knitted for friends or family members. It always makes me so happy to see people share the gifts they have made, whether big or small, simple or complex. I joke with my online craft friends that no handmade fibre project can claim to be so unless they have a hair or two woven into it. It is the proof of existence for the maker, who tries to go against the irregular nature of handicrafts and, at the same time, accepts it. It is about wrapping up hours, weeks or months in one’s life, along with the songs they have listened to and the perfume they have worn and the memories they have made, and putting it squarely in someone else’s hands and saying: ‘All this, for you.’
Tumblr media
A Wedding Shawl
I have not read anything about there being a standard form of ‘wedding shawl’ in the Shetland tradition. However, there is definitely a category of square shawls with similar sizes and a few construction methods. The samples I’ve seen mostly measure 1.5-2m on one side and have three parts: a central panel, four borders and a strip of edging. It is worked flat in garter lace from centre out.
Neither is there a standardised yarn weight. A widely available yarn is the Shetland Supreme Lace Weight 1-ply by Jamieson and Smith, which weighs at 400m/25g. The Queen Ring Shawl examined by Sharon Miller used a yarn at 700m/25g. From my experience, if you want the shawl to be a true ring shawl (i.e. you want to be able to pull the shawl through a ring) at the size of the Queen Ring Shawl (210cm on the side), go for 700m/25g or finer.
I chose a rectangular shawl because I had very limited time, but I did enlarge it because for me, an abundance of fabric does mean an abundance of cozy happiness.
Pattern
Shell Grid and Spider Webs Puzzle, pattern No.19 in the book Shetland Knitting Lace by Toshiyuki Shimada.
The names of the motifs are confusing. One motif (or two highly similar motifs) might just have two different names if they are produced in two different regions. Names do not mean everything, but I’ve had fun trying to match the motifs with names according to this article by Carol Christiansen at the Shetland Museum.
The double yarnovers (YO's) in the diamonds were called Cat's Eye, but perhaps the 'Spider Web' in the pattern name is referring to the three rows of double YO's in the centre panel. It has a really simple but effective edging.
Tumblr media
Yarn
Mermaid Lace, in colourway #naturel, sold by Great British Wool in the Netherlands. This yarn is 75% merino and 25% sea algae silk. ‘Sea algae silk’ seems to be a semi-synthetic plant fibre like viscose, with algae involved as part of the raw material. (At this price point I don’t think it has anything to do with sea silk, which is fibre produced by actual shells.) The brand name for the most popular product of its type is probably Seacell.
I bought the yarn, because I had never worked with this fibre before and was curious. What I like: it was a little cheaper than a wool/silk blend and has blocked very well. The whole skein was continuous so I didn’t have to deal with a single yarn joint. What I do not like: it lacks the sheen and smoothness of real silk and doesn’t feel as strong, although it doesn’t shed. In conclusion, I’d rather use a traditional Shetland 1-ply or another natural fibre yarn.
It's also worth mentioning that whilst I prefer to support small businesses, it was disappointing to have received a 93-gram skein when I had ordered 100 grams. It was one of those days between Christmas and the New Year and I somehow did not contact the customer service, but I really should have.

Needle
2.5mm 80cm circular needles. See modification below.
Modification
This Japanese knitting book follows Japanese sizing for knitting needles. The suggested size was no. 1=2.4mm. I figured that I could use a 2.5mm since I knitted on the tighter side, and in any case it was probably okay to make the lacework a little more open by going up a needle size.
I am not going to give out the pattern, but it is probably necessary to explain the structure of this shawl. The centre is knitted first, and then an edging is knitted onto it by picking up either live stitches or the vertical edge of the centre as you go (see schematic below). The four ‘corners’ of the edging have short-row shaping to help it lay flat. I know that traditionally people can achieve this by other methods, but I haven’t tried any of those yet.
I enlarged the pattern by increasing both the width and the length. I casted on 133 stitches instead of 101 for the centre panel and knitted Part B 8.5 times instead of 5.5. The spider web pattern in Part B requires the stitch count to be (something dividable by four) plus two, so I made one central increase before the spider web to get 134 and a central decrease after it to get it back to 133. Due to the openness of the lace, the change of one stitch is not visible.
The enlargement meant I had to recalculate the edging as well, because the number of stitches available for pick-up changed. Originally, at each corner you do two repeats with four short-row shaping each. I did 1.5 repeats following the original placement of short-row shaping in order to make the total number of repeats fit the number of edge stitches on the centre panel.
The pattern says to Kitchener-stitch the last row of the edging to the provisional cast-on. It just didn’t make sense because that would be two rows too much (the Kitchener stitch row plus the provisional cast-on row). To make the number perfectly fit, I knitted only ten rows of the last repeat (there were usually twelve in each repeat). Then I Kitchener-stitched the end to the provisional cast-on, following the lace pattern. I am quite proud of this solution because it is completely invisible.
Somewhere in the pattern it said to purl (looking from the right side). It seemed strange because the rest of the lace was entirely garter. I knitted those stitches and so far I haven’t sensed a ‘mistake’.
The pattern originally calls for 45 grams of yarn. I estimated (based on the increase of stitches in the centre panel) to need about 80 grams. I ended up using 86 grams. Besides the inaccuracies in my estimation, it was probably also because I knitted much more loosely than expected as it was difficult to tension the yarn tightly at such a weight. Like I've point out in the Yarn section above, I was lucky not to have needed more than 93 grams.
The original finished size is 53*118cm. I ended up with approximately 70*170cm.

Conclusion
This shawl took about three months of my craft time i.e. one full day every week for three months and many mornings before I had to leave for university. Knitting outside my room just didn’t work because I was a) engaged in some other activities that made it difficult to steady my hands, and b) worried about putting a white shawl on any public surface.
The pattern itself is relatively straightforward. The first difficulty was, of course, to understand the instruction written in Japanese. Google translate was horrible so I had to rely on my knitting experience. Fortunately, much of the text description was also found in graphs and charts. Then I had to get my hands used to the tiny yarn. After that, it was only fiddly when I did the edging, because I had to turn about every twelve stitches, and by that time I was handling a giant cloud of stitches on my lap. It did give me a lot of time to go over my favourite documentaries and films, and the last bit of edging was surprisingly quick!
Traditionally, Shetland shawls could be sent back to the maker for maintenance. I think it only fair for me to offer that too because I don’t want a gift to become a trouble (same as how you do not use non-machine-washable yarn for baby knits).
In general, I am very pleased with this shawl. It does pass the ring test, despite not being a traditional wedding shawl size or thickness. I do have a whole lot of actual Shetland 1-ply in my stash, so I am really looking forward to taking my Queen Ring Shawl project out of hibernation in the near future.

They’ve built a “Great Wheel” on the Seattle waterfront [...].
The small timber village became a military outpost in the Puget Sound War [...], [and] soon evolved into a trade gateway, with timber tailings and other industrial trash from Henry Yesler’s mill used to fill in the marshlands [...], atop which migrant laborers raised tents and shanties [...] now working to feed raw materials into the furnaces of the Second Industrial Revolution burning in the East. [...] The first nationwide strike ripped across the country’s railways in 1877, but in Seattle the unrest took on a grim character, as thousands of unemployed white workers rioted against their Chinese counterparts [...]. Meanwhile, [...] local elites rebuilt [...] downtown [...] from scratch, hosting the tallest building on the West Coast alongside other new constructs [fueled] with money gleaned from the supply chains linking eastern capital to Alaskan gold. [...] Today the city - again rebuilt [...] - is seen as one of the primary beneficiaries of the “Fifth” Industrial Revolution in information technology, outshone only by California’s Silicon Valley. [...] The digital was increasingly thought of as somehow "immaterial," sustained by intellectual labor more than physical toil [...].
Silicon Valley myths of [...] "immaterial" labor disguise a more gruesome dynamic in which growing segments of the global labor force are being deprived even of the basic brutality of the wage, instead forced out into growing rings of slums, prisons, and global wastelands. [...]
---
Perched alongside a downtown business corridor [...], Seattle's Great Wheel seems to peer out over [...] [the] prophesied “cooperative commons,” an infotech metropolis abutting the beauty of an evergreen arcadia. But travel below Seattle’s cluster of infotech industries and the image appears much the same as that of a hundred years prior - a trade gateway, squeezing value from supply chains by selling transport and logistical support. The southern stretch of the metropolis bears little resemblance to the revitalized urban core of the city proper. Instead of the “cognitive labor” of Microsoft, it is defined instead by the cold calculation of companies like UPS, founded in Seattle when the city was one link in a colonial supply chain built first for timber, then Alaskan gold, then World War. [...]
In south Seattle, this logistics empire takes the form of faceless warehouses, food processing facilities, container trucks, rail yards, and industrial parks concentrated between two seaports, an international airport, three major interstates, and railroads traveling in all directions. Meanwhile, the poor have been priced out of the old inner city, moving southward [...]. [T]hey can be found staffing the airport and the rail yards, hauling cargo in and out of two the major seaports, loading boxes in warehouses [...]. And, beyond them, the shadow stretches out to Washington’s rural hinterlands where migrant laborers staff a new boom in agriculture and raw materials [...] - and further still into America’s long-depressed interior, where the Great Wheel meets its opposite: Memphis, the FedEx logistics city, watched over by a great black pyramid [the infamous Bass Pro Shop pyramid]. [...]
Every Seattle is capable of creating an eco-friendly, “cooperative commonwealth” tended by apps and algorithms only insofar as there is a Memphis that can provide human workers to sort the packages, a Shanghai to build the containers that carry them, and a Shenzhen to solder together the circuits of the machines that govern it all.

I was watching SCP videos, along with Pokespe stuff, and an idea came to me
SCP- 6517
Gotta Catch ‘Em All Part 2
6517 is an unassigned number as of the time of this post
Object Class: Euclid
What if the effects of SCP-5254 didn’t just apply to the Pokémon creatures? What if it was extended to the human characters featured in various Pokemon-related media as well?
SCP- 6517 refers to a series of cosplay costumes produced and sold from a particular website.
This website is called PokeTrainer Depot, which features a wide array of character costumes specifically themed to media released by the Pokemon Company and its affiliates.
Analysis of these costumes by themselves, even as separate pieces, reveals nothing inherently anomalous about them. They appear to be constructed of normal clothing materials such as cotton, denim and some plastic. Even chemical analysis revealed nothing out of the ordinary.
However, tags with the acronym AWCY? have been found inside the clothing articles, suggesting a connection to the avant garde art association Are We Cool Yet?.
Access to the website has been restricted to the public and can now only be accessed by the SCP Foundation given the necessary clearance.
Efforts are ongoing to keep the website from popping back up, as Ser_Viper seems determined to sell them all.
No pop-up or brick and mortar locations have been reported to date.
There is also no factory name on the labels found within the costumes. Just the logo of the website and washing instructions alongside the AWCY? logo.
Navigation of the site is relatively simple, with the costumes divided into sections based off of which ‘Generation’ they originated in.
For example, Generation 1 refers to the characters introduced in the 1996 releases of Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, and Pokemon Green as well as Pokemon Yellow in 1998. It also includes the remakes, namely Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen released in 2004.
SCP- 6517 was first discovered in 2022, post pandemic when a female cosplayer decided to go as one of her favorite Pokemon characters to a local convention, but didn’t have the time, talent or resources to make the costume herself.
So, she ordered it online.
After browsing several sites, ranging from Party City to Spirit Halloween, she found PokeTrainer Depot. It seemed to be of the quality she wanted and for a decent price (converted from yen to USD).
The costume was based on Rosa, the female Player Character from Pokemon Black and White 2.
She received the costume in the mail after about two weeks, and she immediately tried it on for size.
It fit her fairly well, though the wig was a bit cumbersome. She took it off after twenty minutes. She figured that was long enough to break it in.
A few weeks later, she attended the convention with a few friends, who were also going as Pokémon characters, and had a fun time.
They attended a few panels and ogled over other people’s art and crafts for sale.
After the cosplayer had worn the Rosa costume for over three hours, she started to feel an itchiness in her eyes that refused to go away.
She regretfully had to leave the convention due to the prolonged discomfort.
Once at home, the cosplayer removed her Rosa costume and slipped into something more comfortable. She took some painkillers and laid on the couch in her living room, eyes closed and waiting for the pain to stop.
Once it subsided, she felt the call of nature. As she finished up, she looked at herself in the mirror and gasped.
She noticed that her eyes had changed color to match that of the character.
She was confused and a little bit scared. She didn’t wear contacts, so how did this happen?
Freaked out, she contacted her doctor about the sudden eye color change.
She made an appointment for one week from then.
In that time, the young woman still had to go to work, but she noticed other changes as well.
Her hair grew longer and started to change color, though she was already a brunette so the color change was subtle.
Her skin tone changed as well, though again it was subtle as she was already caucasian. She felt a stinging sensation along her skin as it changed, though, preventing her from sleeping and thus arriving to work the next morning sleep deprived.
When the day of her doctor’s appointment came, she still looked like herself, save for the eyes, hair and skin tone.
She decided to wear her suddenly-longer-hair in a ponytail.
The doctor looked her over, tested her blood pressure and all the usual checkup procedures. When it came to blood and urine tests, the results were… unusual.
So unusual in fact, that her physician contacted their peers, which eventually reached the ears of the SCP Foundation.
The cosplayer lived alone in a rented apartment while working retail at a large name brand store. Her coworkers noticed the changes in her eyes and hair and complimented the cosplayer on it.
Though the pins and needles-like pain she felt in her body made her worried.
Over the course of the next two weeks, the cosplayer experienced further physical changes, including height and a visible de-aging. She looked like she was twelve again.
She also started blacking out without explanation, appearing someplace else some time later.
It was around then that the SCP Foundation went to the cosplayer’s home to investigate.
She let them in with no fuss and complied with answering their questions.
The entire conversation was recorded for future analysis.
She admitted she had to call in to work the past few days because she felt there was something seriously wrong with her.
The blackouts frightened her, and the pain and discomfort she felt in her body didn’t help. She knew it wasn’t time for her menstrual cycle yet.
It was like she was an alien in her own body.
As she was trying to explain her situation to the SCP Agent, she seemingly blacked out again, going silent and still for a moment. But she didn’t pass out.
When she looked back up, she wasn’t as shaken or anxiety-ridden as she was before.
It was as if she was experiencing a personality disorder, and another personality had taken over.
The Agent continued with their questioning, asking the new entity to identify itself.
It identifying itself as Rosa, a saddened look on her face.
She also complied to answering questions, while asking several of her own.
She admitted to being very confused as to where she was most of the time, and that she felt guilty about inconveniencing her host once she realized what was happening.
‘Inconveniencing’ was an understatement.
She knew she was no longer in Unova. She was in someplace called New York, where Pokémon existed only in fiction. As did she.
But Rosa wasn’t worried by this. Quite the contrary.
Rosa told the Agent that the last thing she remembered before waking up in the cosplayer’s apartment was darkness.
Her memories in fragments, recounting events extremely similar to that of Pokémon Black and White 2 from her perspective, with realistic details that the game and its adaptations never mentioned.
The Agent was able to help clarify the situation for the displaced Pokémon trainer, and asked her if there was any way to reverse the process.
Rosa shook her head sadly.
There wasn’t one she was aware of, as it wasn’t meant to be reversible.
Before the darkness, she remembered the end of her adventure.
While she was in the darkness, she heard a voice telling her that her story wasn’t finished yet. That she would be given a chance at a new life in another world.
Soon after that, Rosa switched out with the cosplayer, who panicked upon waking.
The Agent informed her of what Rosa had explained, as she had not been conscious for the duration.
The cosplayer directed him to the website she ordered the costume from.
The cosplayer was taken to Site 19 for containment and further questioning.
All the while, the Foundation contacted their Site in Japan, wanting to know if the Nintendo Company knew anything about the PokeTrainer Depot website.
It turned out they didn’t, and any instances of SCP- 6517 were already being kept secret from the mega million dollar company by an unknown third party.
Understandably.
If they found out there were cosplay costumes that successfully turned humans into their characters, albeit not the Pokemon themselves, it would be like SCP-5254 all over again.
After some digging into the website, analysts found an address attached to the sender of the anomalous costumes.
Members of special task force MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox"), the same task force responsible for neutralizing SCP-5254 instances that manifest in public spaces, were dispatched to the address to investigate and secure any instances of suspected SCP-5254 and/or SCP- 6517 that may be on the premises.
The location was a house in the Kansai region, surrounded by fields and sparse trees. The house was of traditional Japanese design with a second floor and some modern amenities.
When the MTFs arrived, one operative observed that there was someone waiting for them outside, sitting on the front porch.
They appeared to be a Japanese woman with long dark hair kept in a high ponytail wearing a simple loose shirt and long skirt. She appeared to be in her late 20s.
When the MTFs approached, she showed no resistance or hostility. She even showed them inside upon being asked.
She had seen the trucks coming and knew what it meant.
They soon found a group of children and teenagers, ranging in age from 10 to 14 years, huddled in the living room.
The woman urged the children not to resist and to go with the MTFs willingly.
She asked if where they were going was safe. One agent responded that yes, they would be kept safe and secure until they could better determine what to do with all the transformed persons.
But that wasn’t up to the MTF.
The woman was identified as Keiko Nakamura, daughter of the mysterious Ser_Viper connected to SCP- 5254
She informed them that her father’s real name was Eiji Nakamura, but suspected that he would’ve changed his name to stay hidden by now.
That much information was better than nothing.
Keiko requested to come along with the SCP- 6517 instances so they may feel less afraid.
The request was approved.
Keiko was immediately brought to an interview with a SCP researcher assigned to SCP- 6517, Dr. Ruka Onata.
Keiko confessed that she knew this day would come, and had made rudimentary plans for such an occasion.
She confessed that she was the one who suggested to her father about bringing the human characters to life too.
It gave the man the idea to create the costumes sold on the PokeTrainer Depot website, working with AWCY? to produce them. He continued to create and add to the collection with every new Generation and characters created by the Pokemon Company.
She had no idea where he was doing it from, as they’d cut ties after she found out about his involvement with SCP-5254
It had been about five years prior when Keiko encountered the first instance of SCP- 6517.
She had been driving home from work in the city, and had just parked her car in the driveway when she saw someone on the porch.
It had been raining, and the rain obscured the person’s shape, though they didn’t seem to be moving.
Upon closer inspection, Keiko saw it was a girl around 9-10 years old, who had fallen asleep on her porch, seemingly waiting for her return.
Concerned, she picked the girl up and brought her inside without thinking twice. It wasn’t until after she’d laid the girl down on some tatami mats that she noticed the blonde coloration of her hair and odd clothing.
The next thing she noticed was that she was running a fever.
Keiko nursed the mysterious girl back to health, during which time she learned her name was Yellow and where she came from.
She confessed that her host’s name was Himawari, fittingly enough. It meant sunflower in Japanese.
When Keiko looked into the website herself, she was angry at Ser_Viper that he’d put her address on the site, seemingly using her as his scapegoat.
Attempts to change it were futile, and she couldn’t move away due to financial restrictions.
Without much of a choice, Keiko let Yellow stay in her house but she had to earn her keep and so the Pokemon Special character became her adopted daughter and housekeeper.
Over the next five years, characters from Generations 1 to 4 had shown up at her house, following the same logic as Yellow had only to be disappointed.
Keiko let them all stay with her… until the SCP Foundation arrived.
She found that any Pokémon character costumes after Gen 4 were not available in Japan, and the same could be said in other countries.
Gens 5 and 7 were only available in America, Gen 6 was only available in France, Gen 8 was only available in the UK and Gen 9 was only available in Spain.
Notices were given out to SCP Sites in these countries in case instances of SCP- 6517 were ever reported.
As previously mentioned, the MTF squad had recovered several children from Keiko’s home, all possessing physical and personality traits matching that of various Player and Rival characters from before Generation 5.
These include:
Kiiro (SCP- 6517-A), also known as Yellow
Age: 15
Akai (SCP- 6517-B), also known as Red
Age: 20
Midori (SCP- 6517-C), also known as Blue Oak or Green
Age: 16
Aoi (SCP- 6517-D), also known as Green, Leaf or Blue
Age: 20
Hibiki (SCP- 6517-E), also known as Ethan, Kin or Gold
Age: 17
Gin (SCP- 6517-F), also known as Silver
Age: 17
Kris (SCP- 6517-G), she is not known by other names, though she sometimes answers to Kotone or Lyra.
Age: 17
Yuuki (SCP- 6517-H), also known as Brendan or Ruby
Age: 15
Haruka Birch (SCP- 6517-I), also known as May or Sapphire
Age: 15
Wally (SCP- 6517-J), also known as Mitsuru.
Age: 15
Hikari Berlitz (SCP- 6517-K), also known as Dawn, Shirogane or Platinum
Age: 12
Kouki (SCP- 6517- L) also known as Lucas, Dia or Diamond
Age: 12
Jun (SCP- 6517-M), also known as Barry, Shinju or Pearl
Age: 12
While under initial containment in Research Site-79 in Tokushima, the victims of SCP- 6517 were kept in separate humanoid containment cells decorated to resemble relatively normal bedrooms.
They were later transferred to Site 19 in the USA for their own safety and because they had the additional housing necessary.
Luckily, the subjects were discovered to be multilingual, adapting to the many languages the Pokémon games are translated into.
Through testing, as with instances of SCP-5254, the effects of SCP- 6517 were irreversible, try as the researchers might.
Several trials were conducted to see if the subjects of SCP- 6517 could recall the memories of their hosts.
Some of these trials were successful, but it left the subjects with symptoms of a looming existential crisis.
To mitigate this, an on-site counselor was assigned to SCP- 6517 to help the subjects through this difficult time.
Other attempts to reverse the transformation with the twelve previous instances were proven ineffective, whether it be through hypnosis, wearing the Host’s old clothes or surrounding them with things that would hopefully trigger something from the Host’s memories.
The instances did divulge that while they could access some of their Host’s memories, their souls were gone.
For all intents and purposes, the original hosts were dead.
The Department of Misinformation made sure that the hosts’ deaths were made official despite having no bodies to show for it, the disappearances covered up and their families notified.
To test the effects of SCP- 6517 for themselves, Site 79 researchers ordered a cosplay of Lance, also known as Wataru in Japan, from PokeTrainer Depot.
Using Rosa’s testimony as a guideline, the researchers made the D Class keep the Lance costume on for three hours. When he began to complain of itchiness in his eyes, he was instructed to remove the costume.
The D Class was kept under surveillance for the next two weeks, during which time several notable physical changes occurred.
The D Class was originally a middle aged man with balding hair, a beard, and a portly body.
His eyes and hair changed color and shape. He also got taller, thinner with more angular features, and de-aged until he appeared to be in his late 20s.
He looked like Lance wearing the orange jumpsuit of a D Class.
They extracted samples of the D Class’ DNA every day, which allowed them to track how fast the effects of SCP- 6517 took to completely override the host’s DNA.
They also kept track of his brain waves, for when the other personality manifested.
It was after those two weeks that the D Class’ brain waves were replaced by another’s, though briefly.
Through interviews with the other personality, identifying itself as Lance, the SCP researchers learned that these instances borrowed several traits from the host in order to fill in gaps in their own personalities.
After the third week, the D-Class was gone, fully replaced by a walking and living version of a human Pokemon character.
The Cosplayer who became Rosa was given the designation of SCP- 6517-N.
After the transfer to Site 19, several other D-Class personnel were used to test the effects of SCP- 6517.
Lance was given the designation of SCP- 6517-O.
Three other characters were brought to life in this process, including N (aka Natural Harmonia Gropius), Cynthia (aka Shirona), and Hilda.
They are 20, 27 and 16 years old respectively
They were given the designations of SCP- 6517-P, Q and R.
Given that there were so many of them, the 0-5 Council allowed them to be moved to a separate location where they could be monitored but otherwise allowed to lead relatively normal lives.
The location was a campground located in Nevada.
The campground encompasses five acres of land, bordered by a concrete wall that only SCP personnel have clearance to enter and exit at any time.
The instances of SCP- 6517 have been given access to one acre of fruit trees and garden vegetables they tend to themselves.
The other four are woodlands that surround the campground.
Other food items and necessities are provided by the Nintendo Company as compensation for their involvement in the SCP-5254 fiasco that led to SCP- 6517.
The boys and girls sleep in separate cabins, as do the adults.
Personnel are assigned to act as Camp Directors, helping the instances adapt to how our world works and the animal species.
It is noted that they all own plushie versions of their individual Pokémon teams.
Addendum:
Having found the essay Eiji Nakamura had to prepare for the AWCY? Exhibition in 2014, SCP agents found exactly what they were looking for in terms of how SCP- 6517, and by extension SCP-5254 really worked.
The costumes were manufactured using a thread coated in an anomalous substance, one that once soaked through became indistinguishable from the thread itself. If used to stitch together clothing, the effects of the substance would spread to it as well.
The effect was listed as ‘transformation into the subject of the costume itself, believing themselves to be a certain character over a period of time.’
Other ways SCPs can bring Pokemon to life:
SCP-387 Living Lego
Lego Pokemon exist now
SCP- 507 Reluctant Dimension Hopper
If he somehow landed in the world of Pokemon and brought some back with him

So I never technically beat tears of the kingdom
It started as me wanting to get prepared for it, make sure I do it in one go. Max my hearts, max my inventory slots, upgrade my favorite armor sets in case I wanna swap em around during the fight, commit war crimes against the Lynel population to get a bunch of multishot bows, yanno the usual stuff.
And then THAT turned into “ah shit upgrading armor costs MONEY” and “how do I easily make money? Selling gems to that nice lady in Goron City!” And “easy way to get gems? Fighting Taluses!”
And THEN I remembered that you get medals for defeating all instances of a boss type and, well, since I’m already going to be mass-murdering taluses for money I might as well just blitz through all of them in one go and get the medal since fighting them is so easy.
(And while I was doing this I started mapping and mass-solving korok puzzles cause it turns out the full inventory upgrades took more than I expected and I actually wasn’t very good at finding koroks on my own…)
And then I finished the Taluses. And I went to collect my reward.
And it said I have one left.
So I did it again. I went online to one of those interactive map pages, filtered for Taluses, and marked each one before doing a circuit of the entire map. Not only did I CHECK every talus for the “defeated” notification, I re-fought every single one just in case it was some kind of glitch.
And it still says I have one left.
So now here I am on my THIRD attempt of finding the last Talus I need to kill to get my medal because goddamnit I CANNOT DEAL WITH THIS
And of course between fighting the Taluses and Uber-ing koroks around I was EMPTY HANDED. No bomb flowers, no zonaite, no bitches
So I had to do a depths tour. And re-did all the depths talus fights seperate from my other runs. Just because I can. Ended up buying like 45 bomb flowers with all the poes I got and have over 1000 crystalline charges so I’ve bought out every construct shop like three times.
Anyway I’m at like. 400 something Koroks cause if I’m doing several world tours I figured I’d get those while I’m at it (and it helps when I get sick of chasing these dumb rocks) and I’m fairly certain I’m going to get all the other boss medals before I find this last fucking talus just from me needing to kill them to restock on materials.
On the bright side Ganondorf is gonna get his shit absolutely WRECKED when I eventually get there. Master sword who? All I need is my collection of 5 shot savage lynel bows and an inventory full of rocket shields. Eat bullet time you raggedy old bitch!

On February 21 and 22, 2023, the United States Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in cases involving the content moderation practices of social media platforms. The Court has also indicated that it could later address the First Amendment issues involved in conflicting Court of Appeals decisions regarding content moderation laws passed by Texas and Florida. The February oral arguments will, no doubt, be revealing. At this point, however, the fact that the Court has bifurcated the content moderation issue into questions of platform behavior and state authority could be telling as to the intentions of at least some of its justices.
About two percent of appeals to the Supreme Court are granted certiorari and heard by the justices. That the February cases have made it over that hurdle suggests at least some members of the Court might have something to say on an issue that has become a fixture in the culture wars (and the trigger for the Texas and Florida laws).
Although only one of the February cases explicitly mentions it, at the heart of the content moderation issue is Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. For almost 30 years, Section 230 has been the foundation governing expression on digital platforms. The provision was enacted in 1996 at a time when the online experience was dominated by America Online (AOL), Prodigy, Compuserve, and similar services that ran commentary bulletin boards. The goal of Section 230 was to protect online platforms like these from liability for the third-party content that they distribute. In the intervening decades, technology has changed online experiences dramatically, and the U.S. Congress has failed to re-address existing and emerging policy issues considering those changes. It now falls to the Supreme Court to grapple with the statute based on the practices of 21st century social media.
Famously labeled “The Twenty-Six Words That Created the Internet,” Section 230 did not “create the internet” but rather allowed for the creation of the economic model of social media platforms. What the statute “created” was the protected monetization of users’ personal information through the application of software algorithms to target both advertisements and information and to sell access to those targets. This is a legitimate online activity. The question is whether technology and marketplace changes, since 1996, have also changed what society has a right to expect from the online platforms engaged in that activity.
The Section 230 Life cycle
The societal effects of Section 230 have gone through three stages. The original intent of Section 230, according to its authors, was to clarify the liability of online services for material published by others on their platforms. As online services evolved from bulletin boards to social media, however, the new social media companies took advantage of strict construction judicial interpretations to turn Section 230 from the protection of speech to the protection of a business model that profited from unfettered controversy. In its third phase, Section 230 has become a fixture in the culture wars.
Particularly when it comes to the culture wars incarnation, federal elected officials have used Section 230 as a tool for performance politics, but have done very little substantively. Concurrent with the lack of congressional action, the rigidity of Section 230’s black letter law has been interpreted by courts to short circuit the judicial capability to assess the application of common law principles, such as liability in light of new developments.
The Supreme Court appears primed to go where Congress and lower courts have feared to tread – and to do it in a bifurcated manner.
The February Cases
Scheduled for February arguments are two cases in which private citizens are challenging the behavior of social media companies. Both February cases involve social media’s relationship to terrorist activity.
In Gonzalez v. Google, the family of Nohemi Gonzalez alleges Google was complicit in the November 2015 ISIS attack in Paris that killed 130 people – among them Ms. Gonzalez. The plaintiffs submit the Google-owned service YouTube was used by ISIS to recruit and radicalize combatants in violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA). In addition, they allege that, because YouTube sold advertising on the ISIS videos and shared the revenue with ISIS, the platform provided material support to terrorists. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the suit, finding that Section 230 protected YouTube from liability for videos produced by someone else, and that the sharing of revenue was simply the normal course of business and not in support of a specific group or ideology.
In Twitter v Taamneh, relatives of Nawras Alassaf, who was killed in a 2017 ISIS attack in Istanbul, take a related, but different approach to assigning culpability. They allege that by allowing the distribution of ISIS material without editorial supervision, companies such as Twitter, Google, and Facebook (now Meta Platforms) aided and abetted ISIS’ activity in violation of the ATA and JASTA. Interestingly, the issue of Section 230 is not a part of the Taamneh appeal. Although it was raised by the companies, the lower court never reached a conclusion and thus assessment of Section 230’s applicability was not part of the Ninth Circuit’s decision. The Taamneh plaintiffs did raise the shared revenue issue, however. The appeals court reversed the district court’s dismissal, finding that Twitter (along with Google and Facebook) could face claims that by failing to identify and remove the ISIS video, their actions played an assistive role.
The decision of the Supreme Court to hold the state action cases in abeyance while moving forward with the cases dealing with online behavior perhaps suggests a judicial strategy. Specifically, will the Court seek to deal with the topic of online content in a manner that is orthogonal to the absolutist debate that habitually surrounds Section 230?
Do Algorithms Change the Nature of Liability?
It is asserted by the Gonzalez and Taamneh plaintiffs, and the United States Department of Justice in its brief, that the Section 230 assumption that the “provider or user of an interactive computer service” is simply transporting the work of a third-party does not reflect how the companies have utilized advances in digital technology.
In 1996, at the time of Section 230’s enactment, online platforms such as Prodigy or AOL operated bulletin boards that hosted information posted by third parties. Today, the major online platforms have built their business around algorithms that utilize data collected from each user to select which postings to share with which users. This algorithmic recommendation, it is argued, transforms the platforms from a Section 230-protected “interactive computer service” to an unprotected “information content provider.” The platform companies argue that “recommending” is actually “organizing” and there is no other way to present information to users. The co-authors of Section 230, Senator (then-Rep.) Ron Wyden (D-OR) and former Rep. Chris Cox (R-CA), filed an amicus curiae brief with the Court in which they, among other things, assert that Section 230 anticipated recommendation algorithms and the ability to “filter, screen, allow, or disallow content” as well as “pick, choose, analyze, or digest content.” The authors explain, “[r]ecommending systems that rely on such algorithms are the direct descendants of the early content curation efforts that Congress had in mind when enacting Section 230.”[1]
The brief of the United States Department of Justice argued that the recommendation constitutes the site’s own conduct and is thus outside the protections developed for third-party content. “If YouTube had placed a selected ISIS video on a user’s homepage alongside a message stating, ‘You should watch this,’ that message would fall outside Section 230 (c)(1),” the brief argues. “Encouraging a user to watch a selected video [e.g., by placing it on the “Up Next” sidebar] is conduct distinct from the video’s publication (i.e., hosting).”
Whether or not algorithmic promotion changes the nature of an online platform, and thus its liability protection, will no doubt be one of the major issues addressed by the Court in the Gonzalez case. While there are credible arguments on all sides, one thing is certain, that such recommendation within a closed and controlled platform moves today’s online activities away from the metaphorical open public square.
Such algorithmic promotion also differs from the idealized public square in that it is a compensated service. The internet per se is a public square in which anyone can set up their soapbox and in which all the world’s information and opinions are readily available. In contrast, social media, although constructed on an open platform, is a closed business in which algorithms are programmed to maximize revenue by selecting points of view and targeting their audience. How such construction affects the liability protections of Section 230 will, no doubt, be a major question before the Court.

2022 in review
in an effort to blog about art on my art blog more i will be writing a post covering my work in 2022 and maybe some aspirations going forward into 2023
2022 was the year of learning to paint! at the beginning i was really frustrated, a lot of my pieces were very hit or miss and i couldnt tell why some sucked and some fuckd. i nibbled at some online courses for fundamentals, James Gurney’s Color & Light book and Marco Bucci’s painting videos, and was looking for a mentor at one point but i think i stopped cuz i broke my thumb briefly lol
Tumblr media
a piece from december 2021 that is just a bit random and i think representative of my stabbing in the dark
Tumblr media
studying...
in June i split a schoolism sub with emma and it was an amazing decision. i think if you have limited time to practice drawing or dont know where to go the best thing is to take a course, and ive taken cheap or free courses online but the tutors on schoolism are top of the industry and the quality of their teaching is stellar imo. literally felt my brain explode with knowledge they are the best of the best. i finished the painting workout course with wouter tulp and ive dipped in and out of numerous others since then. its cool bcus u can study at your own pace.
July was artfight, i did talk about it here so not gonna repeat myself heh
then i was really busy with my MA, its been so fun and so exhausting. a year is so short and i want to try all the printing techniques and ceramics and everything cry. but hey now i know indesign and can make my own zines and stuff which is amazing. i also tabled at my first market :) i did really like it and would love to do more, dont want to put pressure on myself to do that this year but at least wanna visit them and scope out the audiences and stuff.
school really is making me appreciate traditional art again, tbh it is nothing like digital. you just cant get that chaos or physical resistance from your materials in digital, everything is very deliberate and constructed and almost predictable. ive started to incorporate more traditional work into my pieces where i can, especially photobashing. i can use photos i offhandedly took years ago and it feels really nice to get to repurpose them.
Tumblr media
a spread from my school project, a book about one of my passions (i chose the story of how i got into elden ring!!!) i made it from paper cutting, photobashing, and digital. (im going to sell pdf and physical copies in the new year)
so circling back to the start of the year, i think you can see marked progress in my illustrations that ive posted here. i think i learned a lot about techniques within a painting but i want to learn more about pictorial composition bcus my default tends to be 3:4, portrait, charas centre, and i want to break that habit and tell more effective stories :)
over the past 2 years ive been incorporating more realism into the characters i draw and trying to be really deliberate with what features, proportions etc they have.
Tumblr media
a 2021 isa and a 2022 isa
i think i want to maintain this level of detail because its descriptive enough for my needs but i want to push it to be more dynamic and stylised. i really admire the way disney animators like jin kim do it. its because im not confident enough with structure and anatomy to really play with it.
on the other hand with life drawing i really want to do more realism and capture exactly whats in front of me because i think i rely on style as a crutch too much hahaha.
Tumblr media
from december. proud of these!!!
thats whats on my mind really. again really dont want to put any undue pressure on myself and i am going to be really busy until october at least. i am seriously proud of my progress in 2022. and im really looking forward to playing bloodborne x

Ideas for Approaching Sharing Fanfics
I've been trying to think of my ongoing issues with sharing my work online in a more constructive way, instead of being Big Sad about it! Ideas beneath the cut.
This is 100% spitballing, I have made 0 decisions. Heck, the most likely outcome is that I take a long break and then return to what I was doing with sharing my fics. Don't take these ideas as a threat or a promise, lol!
I do think these are interesting ideas, though, and I'm so curious what people might make of them, especially writers and fic enthusiasts!
-The simplest idea is to continue writing as I am now and share my work with mutuals/friends. I suppose this way, at least I know my writing IS being read and enjoyed, and there will be no AI scraping/misuse shenanigans.
-Practice Editing Completed Works
I've made great progress developing my writing as ahiddenpath. That's even more valuable than my stories themselves, which is a reassurance; there's no way I wasted my time. However, something I haven't done is edit an entire, completed work as a single unit. Fanfics are released on a chapter basis, and while I've learned to edit chapters, I haven't gone back over a completed work.
Basically, my work is all completed first drafts or in-progress first drafts. And that's fine, but if I'm going to seriously pursue becoming a novelist, then I 100% need the skill of refining completed drafts. The fact that I haven't is a bit alarming.
That's the next thing I want to do. I've referenced a "secret project" a few times, now. That project is a completely edited Growing Up with You, something I've been picking at off and on for a while, now. My initial plan was to edit it and release the new chapters on AO3, while leaving the FFN version alone for anyone who enjoyed that and doesn't want to see it change. As you know, I've also been working on an edited Four Years, although the GUWY project is much more ambitious, with new content. I especially wanted to fill in some spots (like the Chosen first meeting in early Adventure and some parts of 02) and add content about Galemon.
But with my recent feelings about sharing my work online, you can see where sharing an improved product is uhhh... Something I'm reluctant to do. So I guess that begs the question... What would I do with these edited fanfics, other than use them for practice?
-Sell epub files of my edited fics to any interested trusted individuals
I've recently been uploading my fics to Kindle and exploring Scrivener's file export options. It's so convenient to read fics on kindle instead of online! Obviously, while fanart creators can sell their wares, fanfic writers face additional/different challenges, so I'd have to figure that out/do a benefit/risk analysis.
-Start a patreon with epub files as rewards
This one seems kind of overly complicated/overkill to me, but I guess it's an option. It's also a way to share art if I want to continue making it??? Same issues as the previous suggestion, though, and no guarantee of protecting my work, really???
-Book bind complete/edited fics
Tbh, because of material costs and how long it takes to make a book, I'd have to charge so much for book binding that I'm not sure anyone would be interested (as opposed to epub files, which would only be a few dollars). I enjoy doing it, however, so this would be a great personal project.
-Change my fanfics and try to publish them
I'm a big AU gal, so it's possible that I might be able to edit some of my fics with publishing in mind. I have no idea how that would go, but regardless, it might be meaningful practice.
-Write and try to publish an original short story collection
I have a few short stories (many based on dreams) that I haven't shared, mostly because they're just a bit... Hm, they're just different than my fics, so I figured the reception would be pretty meh. These would likely be the most conducive items for publishing
-Work on an original novel
I've been working on a series of novels off and on since I was 14, and man, does the 14 part show, lmao! I'm not sure how viable this novel series would be, especially because some of the ideas I thought were so cool and unique when I was 14... Um. Honey. No, they're not. But you have a big heart and passion, young miss, and that's worth a lot!!!!
If you ask what my dream is, I'd say to be a novelist. But I also 100% assume that my stuff would never get off the ground, and statistically, that's likely. Still, my husband tells me that I'll regret it if I never try. I don't have dreams of grandeur, but I do know how to put the work in on something. Maybe it's time?
Those are my current thoughts! Keep in mind that I still would like to finish my ongoing fics, especially Puits d'Amour. I do think that editing a complete fic would be developmentally meaningful, so I imagine I will put more time into that.
For now, I'm not making any decisions, since I suspect I might just be burnt out and struggling with... You know... Existing in 2023. We'll see how it goes! Take care, and let me know if you think any of these ideas are interesting!

How to Know When Your Artwork is Good Enough to Sell
Have you ever questioned the readiness of your artwork to enter the market? Uncovering the worth of your paintings can be daunting, but this is a crucial step for success in any auction setting, whether homemade or professional-grade art.    This comprehensive guide offers tools for assessing whether you’re ready to put that precious painting up for bid.
Evaluating the Quality of Your Work
Evaluating the quality of your work can help measure progress. Don't rely solely on your personal feelings about the worthiness of your artwork for sale. An outside perspective can provide insight into what others see in your art that you might have overlooked.
Also, examine how people react online. If they're engaging with likes or comments, there's potential interest.    Be open-minded and take this feedback constructively. It reflects the public perception of your style. Consider entering local contests or exhibitions, not just for the possibility of winning but also to gain different viewpoints from fellow artists and judges well-versed in understanding diverse forms of creativity.    However, don't let validation determine whether you should sell paintings at an auction or elsewhere because only through selling will you know their actual value.    Remember: 'Perfection' is elusive in creative processes like painting, where continuous improvement makes every creation a bit better.
Finding the Right Audience for Your Artwork
Understanding your target audience immensely boosts the success of selling your artwork. A key step involves developing a buyer persona, a fictional representation based on known attributes and proficient guesses about potential customers. You might have varied personas, reflecting diverse clientele types.    Dive into specific details: their demographics, job profiles, interests, or favorite pastime activities. Understand what they read or how much they earn yearly.    Recognizing trends in follower insights can be beneficial if you are active on social networks. Doing so will help to refine your understanding of customers. Connecting genuinely with buyer persona is important not only for them to purchase but also for them to become strong advocates who can support you during times when creativity is lacking.    By sharing inspirations behind your art creation process and personal life happenings that align with your interest sphere, we deepen ties beyond transactional levels.
Pricing to Optimize Sales Potential
Consider the value of your artwork. Consider factors like materials used, size of work, and originality. Remember that larger pieces or ones using costly resources often fetch higher prices.    Original works typically command better rates than reproductions. Look at price trends for comparable art forms to understand market expectations regarding cost ranges within your niche. To do this, you should take the time to browse online art sales platforms. This will allow you to compare prices and better understand market values for your work. It can be tricky, but it is worth investing time to get it right.    A reasonable pricing strategy can act as an effective business driver, leading to increased sales conversions from potential customers who may make further purchases.    Ultimately, your artwork's readiness for sale is a mix of personal belief and market demand. Confidence in the value of your work is key. Yet don't forget to validate that confidence by consulting with Blackwell Auctions. Gauge reaction from others: keen interest indicates potential buyers exist! With these insights alongside quality artistry, you're set on a path to success.
